This is why I say African music is SUPREME. Although we were stripped from our countries on the continent of Africa, stripped from our cultures, stripped from our religious traditions, and stripped from our families, we created an abundance out of nothing but our souls. The chart below stops in 1992. Think of all we have created from 1992 - present.

Our Ukrainian Beyoncé -
Gaitana!
In Ukraine, everyone loves her. She was extremely popular in the 2000s, and she recently promised a comeback. :D
Gaitana or Gaita-Lurdes Essami (translated as "strong and glorious" from Lingála; born March 24, 1979, Kyiv) is a Ukrainian singer and songwriter of Congolese origin, who combines in her work the style of soul performance with the dance style of songs, which include elements of jazz, blues, funk, soul and folk music. She's the author of most of her own songs.
She was born on March 24, 1979 in Kyiv. Until the age of five, she lived in the Republic of Congo, where her father came from, and spoke only French and Lingála. Then, she returned to Ukraine with her mother. Gaitana's father still lives in Brazzaville, is engaged in the transport business, and rarely sees his daughter.
Gaitana graduated from a music school in the saxophone class, later received an economic education. She has been playing table tennis since she was a child, earning the title of candidate for master of sports.
On February 18, 2012, she won the right to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. Gaitana performed the song "Be My Guest." According to the results of the second semi-final, which took place on May 24, the composition made it to the final. In the final, the song scored 65 points and took 15th place.
One of her most popular songs:
"Lonely bossa (boss-lady)"

"Dances"

I don't know who needs to hear this, but Bruce Springsteen is not country music, nor even country rock, but just regular rock.
#music#bruce springsteen#he occasionally dabbles in country styles for individual tracks#just as he sometimes likes to do old soul songs in concert#(with more enthusiasm than proficiency but he's having fun)#he has definite folk-rock influences#with his earliest albums marked by obvious dylan idolatry#but one can't call most of his work folk-rock either#genre is fake but it's good to not get the wrong idea#the distinction between country and r&b and rock is *style* not content#just like the distinction between standards sung as jazz and the same songs sung as orchestra-backed pop vocal#frank sinatra sang many of the same songs as billie holiday and ella fitzgerald#but he did not consider himself a jazz singer

one thing about alt stuff is that the barrier to entry to being "goth" is truely so fucking low and yet people constantly limbo under the bar instead of stepping over it and wonder why they get called posers. like we're not asking you to move mountains here we're just asking you to find even one band under the umbrella that you like and to engage with the community a little bit. The fashion has truely so much overlap between goth punk and emo so very few people will care which one you call yourself based on your look and you just have to find a band you like. Dashboard Confessional screams a bit too much for your taste and Dead Kennedys is too loud? Guess what you're in luck the goths listen to something a little softer and weirder they call it dark wave or ethereal wave depending on the phases of the moon. Try out Clan of Xymox or Switchblade Symphony. Like truly the alt music scene is so fucking diverse there's gotta be something in here that you like. If not and you truly are a pop girlie then don't call yourself punk it's very easy.
#listen don't at me I do think that dark wave ethereal wave and new wave are all basically the same music genre#but I also don't think that emo isn't even a real music genre because it's all either punk pop punk or screamo#I don't like labels when they become entirely too niche to be helpful xoxo#the only music genres to me: Punk Metal Wave Industrial Electronica Pop Punk Screamo Grunge and Goth#and then the other ones which are rock hiphop folk country pop jazz soul blues R&B ska and classical but those r less relevant here#don't make it more complicated than that it doesn't need to be#this is not contradictory with the scene being diverse btw Mitski and Kesha are both considered pop yet their music is distinct#so too two punk bands are allowed to sound different and both be punk without a whole new genre getting made up

Release: October 25, 2010
Lyrics:
I got Aretha in the morning
High on my headphones and walking to school
I got the blues in springtime 'cause I know that I'll never have the right shoes
Momma she'd notice but she's always crying
I got no one to confide in, Aretha nobody but you
Momma she'd notice but she's always fighting
Something in her mind and it sounds like breaking glass
I tell Aretha in the morning
High on my headphones and walking to school
I got the blues in springtime 'causee I know that I'll never have the right shoes
You got the words, baby you got the words
You got the words, baby you got the words
Aretha
Aretha, I don't want to go to school
'Cause they just don't understand me and I think the place is cruel
Child singer, raise your voice
Stand up on your own, go out there and strike out
Songwriter:
I tell Aretha in the morning
High on my headphones and walking to school
I got the blues in springtime 'cause I know that I'll never have the right shoes
But I got the words
