Hugh's Bats roster change for 5/28/2024
BIG NEWS. Yesterday I was able to trade away Jarren Duran and Kirby Yates for Teoscar Hernandez. I'm losing steals and saves and replacing it with Teoscar's five category production. Sure he won't steal that many bases but he isn't going to put up a goose egg in that category (he already as 3) and really this is more in line with my new philosophy of "HOME RUNS ARE A ROTO CURE-ALL". Time will tell if I overpaid in the trade but given both Yates and Duran's injury history I'm not too worried about it.
Michael Busch is gone. Strikes out too much.
Gavin Stone is gone. He walks too many batters.
Assad is goneI'm afraid he gives up too much hard contact.
Logan O'Hoppe is gone. I really like his hitting profile but I like the line up context of Jonah Heim more than O'Hoppe's.
Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove are back. I'm not sold on Pivetta but I believe in Musgrove's talent level.
May was tough for Hugh's Bats. On the bright side I feel like was able to make some trades that could help the team in both the long and short runs. On the darker side of things...Hugh's Bats are currently sitting at 7th place.

Javier Assad Has to Return to Earth Eventually, Right?
Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports The biggest positive of this frustrating Chicago Cubs season has been the emergence of Shota Imanaga as a frontline starter. As you probably remember, Imanaga was introduced to the wider American baseball-watching public when he started the gold medal game of the 2023 World Baseball Classic for Team Japan. Well, heâs not the only Cubs starter who had a breakoutâŠ

as for the rest of the lineup, who knows???? one can only hope one of these days bellinger, swanson, hoerner, and tauchman will start hitting again. that said, tauchman got unlucky the other day so i cannot be too mad at him.
we love christopher morel and ian happ in this house. regardless of anything.

Hugh's Bats line up update 5/6/204
First change is prospect James Wood and starting pitcher Justin Steele are gone. I traded them away for Nick Castellanos who is off to a dreadful start. His track record is long enough I have faith he will turn it around...all this in the pursuit of home runs.
Someone dumped Mike Trout in my league, I think they were running out of Injury Reserve spots. Anyway I snagged him.
Joe Musgrove is gone. He has a forearm strain and has been awful all season. In his stead is Javier Assad who currently has an ERA under 2 at the moment. The knock against Assad is he gives up a ton of hard contact and the popular thinking is that hard contact will turn into home runs as the weather warms up. But what if it doesn't? I know that he won't keep the ERA that low all season but I'm going to see where this goes.
Daniel Hudson is gone. He blew two saves in a row and Andrew Kitteredge was on the waiver wire so I swapped them out.
Home runs were down again this week for Hugh's Bats. The sole bright spot was Christopher Morel who had three. I don't think anyone else hit one at all! Brutal.

[ad_1] Right-hander Javier Assad has done it all for the Chicago Cubs this year. Heâs served a multi-inning relief role, come into the game for leverage moments to give the offense a comeback opportunity, and now heâs back in the rotation getting a look as the Cubs push for the postseason. Assad threw a career-high seven innings in Friday nightâs 6-2 win against the Toronto Blue Jays. The 26-year-old retired the last 10 batters he faced as he held Toronto to just one run and four hits. The offense spotted Assad a three-run lead before he threw a pitch behind home runs from Nico Hoerner (solo) and Cody Bellinger (two-run) off Blue Jays starter JosĂ© BerrĂos. The Cubs (60-56) tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Seiya Suzuki connected for a two-run double and Mike Tauchman delivered an RBI single. âThis isnât just a guy filling in,â Hoerner said after the win. âThis is a guy throwing 94 mph with command of five pitches and itâs a legit mix. Iâm not at all surprised by what he did today, but itâs still impressive for sure.â Itâs the type of performance that earns another start during the playoff hunt. âI donât think much fazes him,â manager David Ross said before the game. âHeâs a quiet competitor for sure and has a lot of belief in himself. He never backs down from a challenge. âHe does a really nice job of going out there and competing with his best stuff. Iâve said that a lot about a lot of these guys, weâre wired the right way, like, just going to go in and give it his best and nothing seems to faze him as far as role shifting or any distractions. He has just been really good at anything you asked him to do.â Playing games for 16 consecutive days challenges even the best big-league teams. Between the daily grind and being nearly 4 1/2 months into the 162-game schedule, the Cubs earned Thursdayâs off day in Toronto, their first since July 24. The exhaustive stretch tested the pitching staff. The Cubs entered Fridayâs series opener at the Blue Jays refreshed following the one-day break, part of three off days in a week span. It allowed the bullpen to get an important reset, especially the back end that has been called on a lot lately. Seven of the Cubsâ last 16 games were decided by two runs or less, creating plenty of high-leverage opportunities. Thatâs representative of what the Cubs have faced over the last two months in their efforts to dig out of the poor stretch from the end of April into May. âI feel like weâre pretty well equipped for whatever the next month and a half, two months of the regular season in front of us just in what weâve experienced with the deadline,â Hoerner said. âI feel like having some games that felt like they were a little turned up as far as urgency and intensity, thatâll be a really good experience in the long run for our group too.â These final seven weeks of the regular season are a stark contrast to the environment Ross and the team faced in the previous two seasons. Trade deadline seller status, and being out of the postseason hunt, meant more of a long-term view of player usage and development after the All-Star breaks in 2021 and 2022. That has not been the case during the second half of this season. âRight now thereâs guys that are going to lack some at-bats and innings in moments,â Ross said Friday. âYouâre going to ride the guys that are doing well. ⊠Myself included, just trying to put the right winning formula out on the field every single day. âThereâs no mandates of this guyâs got to play, that guyâs got to play. Itâs, letâs go win baseball games. Itâs a refreshing time to be in this push and those guys put themselves in that position and earned it.â It requires some adjustment from Rossâ position of handling the people part of his job. Every game matters the rest of the way and playing time isnât guaranteed. The Cubs are optimizing their options. This week it meant moving left-hander Drew Smyly to the bullpen amid his struggles and inconsistencies while moving right-hander Javier Assad into his slot for now. Assad, who got the start Friday night at Rogers Center, earned the opportunity through his performance in a versatile relief role for most of the year. Conversations with players whose playing time or role has been downsized is an ongoing effort by Ross as the Cubs battle to reach the postseason. âSome of the bullpen guys when they feel like theyâre overworked I try to talk to them and tell them, hey, youâre valued and I understand Iâm pushing you hard. Communicating through that and letting everybody know that you see the tough times that come with it. Itâs fun when youâre winning, but somebodyâs not getting the bats and somebodyâs not getting the innings and somebodyâs going through things â I think thatâs throughout the season â but trying to just be open and honest is the best I can do it, communicate, let guys know. âThat is part of the challenges of that, but itâs all a good thing. Everybodyâs here to win. They all know that.â With three catchers on the roster, Tucker Barnhartâs limited playing time has put him among the players on Rossâ radar lately. Since Aug. 1, Barnhart has pitched in more games (two) than starts behind the plate (one). He hasnât even recorded a plate appearance after his last start. Despite the Cubsâ heavy schedule over the last 18 days, Barnhart, who wasnât in the lineup Friday, hasnât started in 10 days. Ross doesnât know when Barnhart will next be in the lineup, but part of his message to the veteran catcher: Be ready because we donât know whatâs going to happen. âHaving success can be really tough when he gets back in there and having those conversations with him and him coming in games that weâre down eight-plus runs and pitching and being able to pick us up and be a great teammate, he works his butt off,â Ross said. âHeâs here early hitting when nobodyâs here early on. Like, I want to talk to him and let him know that I understand.â Ross told the team during spring training that great teams rely on everybody to have success. There will be a balancing act down the stretch of maintaining playersâ health and not grinding their top hitters or pitchers into the ground as they try to rack up series wins. Justin Steele and Kyle Hendricks have already exceeded their total innings pitched in 2022. Finding spots to utilize a locked-in pitcher like Assad might not be uncommon in moments during their final 46 regular-season games. âWe need everybody and weâre going to rotate through,â Ross said. âHayden (Wesneski) may make a big start for us at some point and Assadâs making a big one today and Drewâs going to be back in there at some point and that goes throughout the pitching group and the hitting group. âWe need them all. Somebody in the minor leagues that probably hadnât been up here this year is probably going to be an important piece so it takes an entire organization, depth and everybody, and weâre going to continue to do that with sticking to the core values that have gotten us here and working our tails off trying to get better every single day.â () [ad_2]
