#Javert is not one of them

On one hand, I hate adaptations that make Javert the sole villain responsible for every single solitary bad thing that happens in France— to the point of eliminating the novel’s criticism of police entirely, having Javert’s motivation be that he’s “obsessed with Valjean” for poorly defined reasons unlike the other Good Cops who are not obsessed with him, and etc etc etc etc.
But on the other hand….so much fanon takes the complete opposite route. “Javert was not a villain,” “Javert did nothing wrong,” “javert was a noble heroic etc etc etc”
And I don’t like that either. Javert iS a villain! Maybe not *the* villain of the story, but certainly a villain! I mean, Javert literally canonically hates kindness. He also hates thinking! and reading!
I could definitely see a whimsical Saturday morning children’s cartoon where a plucky young Gavroche leads a troupe of kids to defeat Javert’s dastardly plans every week, using the powers of Thought & family & friendship

Every since @fremedon and @everyonewasabird suggested it, every time I read this chapter I'm just more convinced that ., you know...
Javert's bosses sent him to die, right? They sent him out to be Acceptable Losses.
This guy CANNOT lie and also won't . He may currently allow their fun corruption schemes but he doesn't play along. He's not Clever enough to play the politics they want him to play and he's not tuned out enough to miss what's going on. He's definitely loyal enough to just say nothing forever , but who can know that for sure from the outside?
So they sent the Worst Liar In the World to be their spy. If he gets info, hey, useful and good. If he doesn't....
Tumblr media
the fact that after he escapes the barricade--after he's been out in combat duty, without sleep or food, for days-- they send him right back out on patrol? It's obvious that of course they don't Care about him, certainly not the way the Amis care about Prouvaire , but... I think they actively don't want him back.

He has one mode and it's "tormenting Dresden" (due to a grief and anger unaddressed for 30ish years) almost as always with me; @anotherramblingfangirl for the incorrect quote drawn

Lying in bed with a torn rotator cuff, going absolutely insane thinking about the post-Seine Les Mis fic in which Javert is still a member of the police, and gradually becomes aware he is in a narrative due to his repeated realization that his still being a cop, after everything, makes No Fucking Sense. And he is constantly torn between obeying the authority of the author, as comes easily to him, and the sickening sensation of wrongness that comes by this stilted reality- leading to him rejecting it repeatedly in a Groundhog Day fashion. The author retaliates by trying to distract him with Valvert domesticity; this only makes everything worse.
Eventually Javert's repeated cognitive dissonance may lead to him actually thinking about why he feels this dissonance- which only makes everything worse, according to Javert, man who famously hates to think about anything. But the situations keep becoming increasingly absurd, and Javert keeps being off-put. Eventually he probably ends up in a conversation with the two authors fighting over his characterization. He hates both of them. They are both furries.
Great fic. Wish it was written!

idk what to do here folks im out of colors
#have one for enjolras and that’s it 😭 i need one for grantaire and probably combeferre too#leigh reads les mis#actually blue might be free i was using it for fantine and then cosette but fantine is dead now obviously and cosette idk if she’s even in#this volume or if she is if it warrants her having a color dedicated to her#probably not? ushhrf#javert is purple and i think im going to double up on it w eponine since ik there are a lot of parallels btwn rhem#ig i should probably have a color for marius 😮‍💨 maybe i’ll add him to blue w cosette#but this still leaves nothing for grantaire and/or combeferre 😭#WAIT actually. i have a light pink i could use for one of them#it feels so wrong to not make grantaire green but green is for themes … altho i do have a second green highlighter that’s lighter so maybe#could work since the themes one is like. neon#jvj is bright orange and enjolras is a lighter orange and that seems to be working so#hot pink it for fave quotes and then yellow. technically isn’t anything specific but that’s mostly bc i know for a fact it will completely#fade so i don’t want to assign it anything of importance#okay ig. so blue for marius purple for eponine light orange for enjolras light green for grantaire and if combeferre sticks around in terms#of significance light pink for him#<- for all the new characters getting introduced#im a little iffy abt that tho bc the light orange and light pink are rlly similar and enjolras & combeferre are complements like that feels.#whatever i don’t want to think abt this anymore wtdjmg i’ll figure out combeferre later

EVERY POST-SEINE LES MIS FIC BE LIKE
Tumblr media
This meme also works if you replace the "Javert" label with "Me" and make the caption "reading/watching Les Mis be like"
Jean Valjean sees a river and immediately begins wondering if there is a way he can help someone by throwing himself into a river because HIS JESUS-LIKE SELF-SACRIFICE IS ACTUALLY UNNECESSARY AND BULLSHIT THE MAN IS JUST SUICIDAL AND LIKE. CATHOLIC. But also I get how the story works better if Jean dies because that is the point of classism and that is what the book is about but also if you aren't religious it is a much much sadder story and fuck you Victor
This is in no way a diss to post-Seine fics - they are like, one of my favorite things, and if Jean didn't try to sacrifice himself unnecessarily, it would frankly be out-of-character. The best ones are when he learns to stop doing that as much.
JUST LET MY INSANE OLD MAN BE HAPPY HE HAS EARNED IT FUCK YOUR THEMATIC STRUCTURE MAKE THE OLD MEN KISS MAKE THEM BRUSH HANDS HOMOEROTICALLY MAKE THEM GO THROUGH SIMULTANEOUS COMPLEMENTARY JOURNEYS IN WHICH THEY BOTH LEARN ABOUT THEIR INHERENT LOVEABILITY AND SUCK EACH OTHER'S COCKS I WILL FIGHT GOD AND WEAR HIS TEETH ON A NECKLACE
[image description under cut]
Image description: a meme in three panels depicting a popular short viral video in which a little boy yells that he has a knife and then runs from his mother with a shit-eating grin while she screams "NO!!!!", except the people in the video are labeled and the captions have been changed.
In the first panel a little boy is running around an in-ground pool. He is labeled "Jean Valjean." The back of a woman's head is visible and is labeled "Javert." The woman says to the boy, "Let me see what you have!"
in the second panel, the little boy holds up a small object and says "SELF-SACRIFICE!"
in the third panel, the woman labeled Javert screams "NO!!!!" in bright red font. She is a blur as she moves to run after him. Blurry in the background, the little boy is running fast with a mischievous grin.

I had a presenation to day in school and so people saw my computer background pic.
Now that’s of course a picture of Russell Crowe (collage with John Biebe, Ben Wade and Jack Aubrey to be exact)
And some classmates go “oh” or laugh while someone (one of my friends) sings “And I’m Javert” because that’s the only Russell movie he knows and even watched it with me.

To be honest I never got Javert like he was so horny to arrest a dude that when the guy he wanted to arrest turned his life around it made him kill himself? And we were suppose to feel sorry for him??
Tumblr media
"It's not made very clear in the musical unless you listen to his final lines in 'The Confrontation':
You know nothing of Javert I was born inside a jail I was born with scum like you I am from the gutter too
Tumblr media
"In the novel, he is born to a fortune-teller and a thief, and likely had to deal with being surrounded by the scum of Paris' society growing up. He is otherwise described as a good man but incredibly morally inflexible and uncompromising, unable to understand that people can grow and change. He believes in the infallibility of the Law and God, and throughout the story, you see him trying to uphold this at all costs--to the point of insanity. So the fact that a simple thief in Valjean showed him that goodness can exist in criminals likely drove him to a point of self-reflection that he couldn't handle, thereby killing himself in the process.
Tumblr media
"You need to remember, however, that Inspector Javert wasn't always after Valjean--even in the musical he is seen doing other pursuits of justice such as managing a conflict between Fantine and the rude customer, or spying against Les Amis de l'ABC during the June Rebellion. So as much as we often associate the story convention of the unforgiving and doggedly persistent law enforcer pursuing our hero with Inspector Javert, he is seen doing other things. I cannot blame the man for his loss of sanity for being proven wrong. I have seen people fall off the slippery slope for less. I am certain people of today live among them too."
