i think that jack kelly and katherine pulitzer deserve so much love and happiness and they should get to live a long and loving life together. they should have a family and jack should be the dad he needed as a child. katherine and jack would be incredible parents, albeit untraditional. jack would love his family more than life itself and would fill their home with paintings representing hope, love, kindness, and curiosity. katherine would write stories for their children and jack would play with them every night regardless of how tired he is from the long day. their children would be messy and creative and loud and brash, just like they are, and they’d be raised with the belief that every human deserves respect and decency and a life without struggle simply for being human. jack and katherine would be the best parents they can be, and would be best friends while doing so.

"Sure, sure, Jackie Boy like to act like he's all peaches and cream, but he sure like's to cause trouble!" Mooney waved his hands around, using them to punctuate his words. It was obvious that he didn't have a very good impression of the Manhattan leader.

"Once, he convinced Spot he could communicate with his ma through a witch board. Augh! Hated that. Ol' Jackie is always up to somethin'." Mooney wrinkled his nose and made a face at the memory. He liked Jack Kelly’s dedication to the bit, but when it came to being serious, Mooney thought he was a bit of a flake. His main reason for his thoughts about Jack was the strike. Unfortunately he didn’t know the full story, being in the refuge for most of the strike.

Headcanons-

Jack is bisexual and uses He/him pronouns. He's 17 years old.

He loves Les like a younger brother. Jack's own younger brother, Michael from the 1991 script, was killed. He sees Michael in Les.

The blurb from Character Mooney was based off of this interview with AKB. One of the antics pulled back stage was convincing Tommy, who was whining about never getting any fanmail, he had a stalker-fan sending pictures of themself to Tommy. Apparently it was easy to convince him because he's so gullible.

Normally I like to base my Jack Kelly off of Corey Cott, but this drawing is based off of Jeremy Jordan. I also like drawing him with a cowboy hat to keep the og cowboy vibes from the 1992 movie.

The “Jack Kelley” card is how I see Jack! Personally I’d like to believe there’s an extra ‘e’ in Jack’s last name. I gave him Corey’s eyes, freckles, and hair, with a cowboy hat and some snark. I made his tongue sticking out slightly because I felt like that fit his personality more than the sneer or whatever Jeremy is doing in the og trading card.

kinda love the idea that, whether this be jack and Davey or jack with Kath, he just tries so hard to be smart around them. now, don't get me wrong- Jack is much smarter than given credit for of course, and probably isn't insecure about any lack of schooling if it meant looking out for and being around Cruchie and all the newsboy, but in most sense of it the idea that he just starts pulling out - and, horrendously missing - very fancy terms he heard being thrown around by the papers, or by the nuns, even by David or Kathrine before.

All the other newsies sides david are very impressed with his skills, of course, the man is smooth as can be when you hear him talk on to his partner using some really, really tough words to pronounce out.

David and/or katherine just let it happen when they see it.

I just watched Newsies Jr. for the first time and i have some…. uh…. thoughts.

i loved that the children’s crusade was fully Kathrine’s idea. in the original all she did was write the poster and Jack had to come up with how to print it and that always felt off-putting, to say the least, when she made it out to be their saving grace but had no idea how to pull it off.

It was cute that Jack referred to the newsies as his family when the Delancys were picking on Crutchie but it made him wanting to go to Santa Fe make even less sense. in the original you could say he was a little oblivious or just needed to be reminded that they were family but in the Jr. version he is just fully ready to abandon his family to find a new one. On top of that there seemed to be a lack of continuity with him leaving for Santa Fe right before the rally. Medda tells him about how leaving is fine but he shouldn’t run away while giving him the money to leave and saying goodbye but when David, Les, and Kathrine show up Jack says he’ll never be able to leave. it just doesn’t make much sense in my opinion.

At the mention of Crutchie: i feel like giving him a name made all the newsies look mean. I get what Disney was doing with not wanting to just call the disabled character Crutchie but it doesn’t work when he’s never called Casey. He is called Casey three times and every other time he is called Crutchie.

The first time he’s called Casey, it’s by himself. he’s talking to David and Les for the first time and says his names Casey but friends call him Crutchie. what was the point of saying Casey? he could of said ‘you can call me crutchie’ or something like that but he made a point of saying Casey. This gives the implication that he wants to be called Casey, not Crutchie. The second time he is called Crutchie is by Medda. Medda’s nice and shown to be nice and well know to the newsies so why would she call him Casey if he’s good with Crutchie? the third time is by Roosevelt when calling him to walk out to reveal the Refuge is getting shut down. in response all the newsies go ‘who?’ and then start yelling ‘Crutchie!’. with the previous implications of him not liking Crutchie compared to Casey it is just not a good look for the newsies.

During the scene where Kathrine asking the newsies why they’re afraid of Brooklyn she comes off as excessively defensive. It’s definitely her right to be defensive considering her circumstances but she was also the one that just walked in on their meeting and basically called them pathetic.

they got rid of the bottom line, the bottom line reprise, watch what happens reprise, and the little song before Jack tells everyone they won. it makes sense, it’s for kids to perform so they wanted it to be shorter thats whatever. They also got rid off That’s rich and Don’t Come a Knocking and replaced it with a song about how women can do anything which wouldn’t bother me much except it is not very good.

The scabbers gave up so quickly it’s ridiculous. it took like three sentences before they’re all in with the strike.

The scenes before and right after the World Will Know we’re mixed up together in such a way that all the dialogue feels odd and it’s confusing to follow.

I’m glad they got rid of the awkward Jathrine scenes, even though i’m okay with the ship they are odd, but so sad they felt the need to add a scene of David and Les getting crushes on the bowery beauties.

Before people come after me for being so critical of something made for kids to perform and watch: i would be a-okay with it if the changes they made made sense but they were either nonsensical for the characters/story or unevenly applied throughout the story.

Anyways it was fine. not particularly bad or good but an enjoyable experience nonetheless

ive had jathrine bouncing around my head for a while but with trans masc Jack and Pulitzer being like please don't give me any grandkids with the last name Kelly as Jack is dying of laughter or just general trans masc Jack Kelly thoughts

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Jack asked, his hands shoved in his pockets and they walked onto Central Park West. “Like, ain’t your dad super traditional an’—“

“And?” Katherine asked. “All he knows is I’m being my boyfriend home and that I love you very much, that’s it. He doesn’t know about… anything else,” she insisted, looking over at Jack reassuringly.

Jack sighed. “Okay,” he whispered. “But you better not leave me alone in a room with him.”

The young woman snorted and knocked on a door that was opened immediately by someone who was not related to Katherine. “Welcome home, miss Katherine,” the young maid smiled, ushering the couple inside and taking their coats. Jack was immediately uncomfortable.

“This place is huge,” Jack whispered.

“Don’t steal anything,” Katherine teased, only rewarded with a sarcastic laugh from her partner. Then she saw her father coming down the stairs. “Father,” she greeted, walking calmly to her dad and letting him embrace her.

“Katherine, my love,” the old man chuckled.

Everything in this place was practically made out of solid gold in place compared to where Jack grew up. He rubbed at the back of his neck, suddenly feeling underdressed in a t-shirt and some old jeans. Katherine’s father was wearing a suit and Katherine looked dressed up whenever she went out, Jack was just so used to it that he didn’t even think twice but now he was about to meet his girlfriend’s father and he was dressed like some bum off the street.

When the old man looked up at him, Jack trembled back only slightly. “Mr. Pulitzer,” he said, awkwardly waving his hand. “Nice to meet you…”

Pulitzer smirked and pulled away from his daughter to offer Jack a handshake which Jack took immediately. The man nodded and hummed in approval. “Firm handshake,” he commented. “All good men have firm handshakes.”

With a small, nervous smile, Jack nodded. “Thank you,” he said. “I-I’m Jack.”

“Jack,” Pulitzer repeated. “So you’re the boy that has my daughter wanting to write all these political pieces, huh?” Pulitzer asked.

And the pleasantries were over. Jack once again rubbed at the back of his neck. “Uh… I-I guess so?” he whispered.

Pulitzer sighed and shook his head. “Listen, she gets ideas in her head and they can’t get out, I get it, just don’t you ever bring her home to tell me I’ll be having baby Kelly's running around in this house,” he said gruffly, just to be protective.

Jack stared for a long moment before a small snort escaped him, only turning into a large, full laughing fit. He was so nervous and out of place that that one comment just set him off. He looked at Katherine. “You hear that, Kat? I’m not allowed to get you pregnant,” he insisted, unable to stop falling into hysteria.

Katherine chuckled along with him. “Don’t worry, Dad, I don’t think that’s something you’re gonna have to worry about,” she assured, walking to Jack and hugging him. Jack kissed her cheek. “I’m gonna go see what’s cooking.”

Jack shook his head. “No, you said, don’t you dare—“ he tried, but Katherine just walked away from him, winking at him as Jack cleared his throat and glanced up at her father.

“You and I, we’re not the same, Mr. Kelly. I can only imagine the differences between us,” Pulitzer began.

Jack bit his lip and looked down with a small smile on his face. “Oh, sir, you have no idea…”

Actually got to watch UKsies finally! Putting my thoughts/things I like under the cut + a final thoughts (live blogging)

I like the little added stuff at the start. It's a cute touch.

Jack and Crutchie actually looking at a physical picture during Santa Fe (Prologue) was a cute touch. They have such good chemistry.

Crutchie showing fear when getting his papers from the Delanceys because it was right after they pushed him down was a nice touch. It makes sense! We love continuity!

I love the parts where they're running in the crowd because they run in front of the camera and you can hear each individual member as they pass it. It's just kinda funny.

I'm liking the chemistry with Jack and Katherine a lot more in this one. His flirting being more playful (my friend described it as "boyish") definitely helps their chemistry. She seems to be more amused than creeped out, and it just helps it feel more authentic.

Ryan's Davey is so lovely! I think his version has definitely become my favorite by FAR. The way he holds onto Les is just so cute.

Final Thoughts

I think this one definitely topped Toursies as my favorite. Everyone had such good chemistry! Jack and Katherine's relationship felt much more authentic!

Davey's arc felt more authentic as well. I love everyone who has played him before, but Ryan definitely understood the assignment with this one. Davey is supposed to be very reserved until he realizes that there's a fighting chance, and that's exactly how he played him!

The original choreography (original compared to the bway/tour/recording choreo that's mostly the same if not identical) was so clever and well done! The little moments they added were also really nice touches!

They blew it out of the water with this performance, and I'm so happy that I finally got a chance to watch it!

I think this production officially holds the title for my favorite versions of the characters and the show! This is definitely one I will be watching again!

hey, I’m so sorry that you’re getting hate for something as small as shipping, it really sucks. However, I don’t think it’s frostandfairytales sending that anon hate. They somewhat left the fandom a couple years back, and only returned to posting like once every few months. They haven’t even posted since October. However, it seems like the anon is sending them asks too, calling you delusional for shipping. frostandfairytales said they don’t condone shipping hate. It just seems like the anon know that they are one of the jathrine shippers and wants to hide behind that while starting a fight between the two of you.

honestly I’ve never even heard about these names until the hate came through. it is sad that it’s something so small as shipping but it’s so tiresome?? lol i didn’t even post most of the hate mail i got bc i didn’t want to give the person the attention anymore. it’d be pointless arguing with them day in and day out.

regardless I’ve revoked their anonymous privileges and blocked the person while reporting the asks themselves for harassment. i don’t think it was that person either nor ever thought that.

sure it’s a possibility but it’d be embarrassing if they stooped that low to begin with. so i doubt so.

Fem Crutchie is absolutely possible the production guide if you can get your hands on a pdf of it (mildly illegal) has information on several characters who the gender is flexible on casting including Crutchie (Spot too little to no dancing there) there's minor line changes like "Your best friend, your family Crutchie" and "It's take a smile that spreads like butter the kind that turns a person head" my cast had three different Crutchies (yeah janky as hell) and one was a girl and we didn't even bother with the line changes because it was for only one night no one gave a shit people still loved her

I saw a local production too with a girl Crutchie who the actor did have some type of leg disability I don't remember exactly what but in a qna after the show she went into detail on how that shaped her Crutchie

Also I've personally seen a fem Jack Kelly who they just made Jathrine more subtle with a cute forehead touch and heard of several more (could always be like Jeremy Jordan and not dance)

It's theater you don't exactly need to pass to play a character if you ever get the chance to be in newsies absolutely go for it if you with a good team who will work around your abilities and skills you really could play anyone
