it's nowhere near the perfection of Hideaki Anno's movie, but this series honestly goes so hard in terms of sheer weirdness and complicated character dynamics, not to mention the consistently amazing wirework and stunt choreography.

To all my Japanese learners- this Netflix show is SO good. One episode had me hooked. I think significantly more effective to watch live action in your target language over watching animated content, because you can see the way people actually talk. So I’m very thankful that I found this show :)

Have you seen this childhood show: Ninja Hattori-kun (1981-1987), Japan (Japanese, English)

Commentary/Context/Memories: This was my shit when I was a kid. Streamed on Disney Channel in my country.

[Mod A: I haven’t seen this show but it sounds interesting! An average 10 year old schoolboy named Kenichi Mitsuba becomes friends with a 11 year old ninja named Kanzo Hattori. Together, alongside with Hattori’s 5 year old brother Shinzo (whose crying can make people faint) and his ninja dog Shishimaru, Hattori helps out Mitsuba whenever he needs help. The ninjas’s archenemy is Kemumaki and his ninja-cat, Kagechiyo (the presence of animal ninjas is absolutely delightful to me!). Kenichi also has a crush on a girl named Yumeko. The show deals with friendship, misunderstanding, conflict, revenge, fears (for example Hattori’s main fear is of frogs), and loyalty. Seems like quite an intense show, would love to know more about the ninja animals in this universe! For example the dog can turn into a fireball/other animals and the cat can talk, spy and have a static electricity attack; are these powers species specific or are they specific to the animal ninja? This worldbuilding is intriguing!]

House of Ninjas (2024 - )

The Tawara family, the last shinobi clan. It had abandoned its roots after an incident in the past, but now the family must take on the greatest crisis in Japanese history, one that threatens to shake the nation to its core.

This is truly an original piece of work I have seen in a while. It has comedy, action, an animation-style story, romance, and a family drama. It really is quite out there with a very good story. I highly recommend it if you enjoy original work and good action sequences. Some may complain about the modern music, but I think it works well with this very quirky story. I loved it. It just was such an enjoyable show and I hope Netflix will renew it for Season 2. Check it out.
