First Take: Mandala Magnets, 2020

To be short and sweet, recycled black acrylic glass, hand painted, to stick on your fridge ^^

Approach to the concept of handmade unique souvenirs, as well as useful art. Sold online on the initiative Tear de Primavera (= Spring Loom) during the Covid19 pandemic to raise money to do new projects, live via Zoom in January2021.

For this passion project, I've reunited on this calls knowledgeable and progressive people in Portugal, by connecting key points such as: the origins of folk, dancing and it's importance in social development (Rafaela and Lucas from IdeiaGlocal) sustainability and alternatives to burning waste in agriculture; city life health and waste behaviours (Maria Ana Moira); last, creative people in enclosure vs an artist while on studio doing an live painting and full conversation on the process of recycling ideas and moving forward creativity during this period (Ana Quintino and Ana Penha).

At the end of each subject, a different recycled project was presented.

Happy New Year, 2022.

I received news last night that I lost my paternal grandmother. 

I was having shepherd’s pie (made with a turkey and pork mince mix) and a glass of red wine - a meal that my husband and I had cooked together as part of our relaxing night in. 

2021 had been a difficult year. I have written extensively about it here, about how 2021 felt like another kind of death (the first in 2012, where I went through a shedding of the self, and gaining of another), and how much I lost and gained in that process. While I’m still wrapping my head around all the lessons (and loss) of 2021, this latest piece of news really hit me in the gut.

My paternal grandmother was the last of my grandparents. I never had much of a relationship with her (or any of my paternal relatives), but it still feels gaping, this loss. Perhaps it’s this idea of mortality looming large, waving its hands, reminding that the ultimate master and wielder of life is ironically, death. Or maybe it’s this idea of feeling that things happen relentlessly - a pandemic, loss, illness, new life, capitalism, growth, money, not as much money, more illness, the failing of the mind and body - and that sometimes its hard to get a foothold before something else hits you in the face. Or maybe it’s just pure naivete - I was really hoping that this new year would be a little better, a reprieve - and it feels anything but.

I am reminded that all feelings pass. I am reminded that my experiences, no matter how isolating and unique they feel to me, have been experienced by scores of people around the world, that that is the most reassuring thing about this life, the universality of the human experience. I am reminded of all these things and yet, the only thing I want to do is cry. 

For once, I had a very short list for what I wanted to prioritise for the New Year (that’s how I titled my list too - Priorities for 2021). The main things were, to go to bed early and to wake up early, to box at least 4 times a week and gain new skills, and to get better at Latin (yes, Latin...but that’s for another day). It’s very uncharacteristic of me to pare things down so, almost as if a part of me understood that I needed to do less, to do more.

I don’t know. I still feel this rush of tears. Perhaps, they need tending to. I wish that for all of us in 2022, that we tend to ourselves the way we need to be, and that we remain soft and gracious while doing so. Happy New Year.
