I kind of love that one of Jane Austen's biggest fans was the Prince Regent (later George IV). She didn't think very well of the nobility in general, but she motherfucking hated him, a wastrel who very flagrantly cheated on his wife.

But he loved her writing, was the first recorded purchaser of Sense and Sensibility, and kept copies of her books in all his residences. She never made enough from her writing to live on during her lifetime, so this wasn't support she could casually toss aside. His librarian kept suggesting ideas for new books to her, which she turned down with exquisite politeness. Much to her aggravation, she found herself obliged to dedicate Emma to the man.

wait is ganseys nickname for blue also a jane austen reference?? because blue’s always described as sensible, and their romantic arc is blue getting over her own pride and prejudices to a guy that was kind of an asshole to her at the start

ganseys humour is so underrated he’s actually hillarious

something about blue gluing canvas trees to her bedroom wall and gansey making a cardboard miniature henrietta…

the best scene is blue going to monmouth and both adam and ronan don’t know what to do - so adam is like hey let’s look at ganseys random trinkets and im going to shamelessly flirt with you and ronan is immediately like wait no, stop, here’s a baby raven named chainsaw - and blue is all for it

jesus i forgot that whelk robbing gansey, ronan beating up adam’s father, and the repugnant argument basically happen all in a row that was a lot

i love dramatic and petulant gansey who lays facedown in a pillow complaining to blue about his life it’s so cute

Anne Elliot: Has never had to, but absolutely could do it without mistakes and would check she has each piece before beginning.

Charlotte Lucas: Yes. The biggest hurdle is convincing Mr Collins she doesn't need his help.

Edmund Bertram: Eventually. Absolutely overconfident that it'll be a breeze and proceeds to make many mistakes before humbly accepting he needs to take it all apart and start over.

Elinor Dashwood: Can do and has done before. When her family try do it themselves she eventually ends up doing it for them and fixing their mistakes.

Fitzwilliam Darcy: Look, he has never had to, and probably never will, but the man would figure it out pretty quickly from the instructions.

George Knightley: Might have even done it before to help his tenants. He's too practical not to do it well.

Lucy Steele: I mean, she absolutely could and probably has before, but why would she want to, when she can rope someone else into doing it for her?

Mr Gardiner: Yep, just something that pops up every now and again in life.

Mrs Weston: Has experience trying to build a piece with Emma and it became a huge mess. Would probably fair better trying on her own, but it's never come up.

Robert Martin: Fixing things and using his hands is basically his job description. He's the guy you hire on air tasker to do it for you and probably has his own set of Allen keys.

Sophia Croft: I want to watch her and Admiral Croft make a Billy Bookcase. They would do it well, but the commentary from them as they go and "No, my dear, it certainly goes the other way," as she flips a shelf over would give me life. She can do it alone but prefers to do it with him.

I am currently reading Jane Austen and the Navy by Brian Southam and I just learned that Darwin both read Persuasion and told his sisters that his captain was like Wentworth when he was travelling on the Beagel:

Having witnessed FitzRoy's dealings with "a little midshipman... you cannot imagine anything more kind & good humoured than the Captians manners were to him." [he then quoted Persuasion]... Charlotte Wedgewood congragulated him... "I am delighted that you have fallen in with a Captain Wentworth - such an extraordinary peice of good luck."

When his sister asked if he wanted a copy of Persuasion, Darwin replied, he had no need of a copy: "there is no danger of my forgetting it"

And now I have a greater admiration for Darwin!
