The first signs of a new remake of The Forsyte Saga appeared on production listings at the beginning of April 2024. While there had been rumors before about the series returning to television, the pre-production announcements were the first sign the project was getting off the ground, with Mammoth Productions most likely behind it. However, it was unclear if the show was a BBC series, an ITV series, or a series made for PBS or Masterpiece, or a combination thereof. But with filming now about to get underway, details are out, and Masterpiece is the one taking the lead on the project, with a stellar cast lined up to star.
The Forsyte Saga is considered the British period piece that allowed the WGBH folks to launch the Masterpiece anthology series as PBS launched nationwide. The series was first aired in the U.K. on the recently launched BBC 2 in 1967, a network most TV viewers did not have yet. It proved so popular that it was rerun on BBC One a few months later, making it technically the first show to make the jump from network to network due to rising ratings. The series then transferred to the U.S. and aired on local PBS stations across the country (which were at that point not under a national umbrella as yet) and proved a massive hit, bringing in numbers that beat out the "Big Three" networks of NBC, CBS, and ABC. Its success proved an appetite for the best of British programming, presaging Masterpiece's launch two years later.
It's now 55 years later, and though Masterpiece aired a new version in 2002, nowadays, it is no longer just an importer. The streaming wars have made it so that the anthology series must co-produce and sometimes take the lead on commissioning shows. The choice to make its own The Forsyte Saga is unsurprising, considering the show's history and its reputation, which means that it has pulled in quite an impressive cast.
One reason Masterpiece has taken charge of the project? This way it can dictate how many seasons there are and when it is renewed. Make no mistake, this is planned as a multi-season venture. Here's the series logline:
The first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on John Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition, and betrayal.
The series cast stars Francesca Annis (Flesh & Blood) as formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann; Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co.; and Jack Davenport (Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James. The next generation down features Danny Griffin (The Gentlemen) as Jolyon Sr.'s bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey) as Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love. Joshua Orpin (Titans) plays James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son, Soames; Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) is Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with, and Tom Durant Pritchard (Miss Scarlet) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.
Outside of the titular family, Josette Simon (Broadchurch) will play Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family; Jamie Flatters (Liar) is architect Philip Bosinney, Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) plays lawyer Isaac Cole, and last (but certainly not least), OG 1967 The Forsyte Saga star Susan Hampshire OBE plays Lady Carteret.
Debbie Horsfield (Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale) will pen all six episodes, with directors Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) splitting helming duties and Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow) producing. Horsfield and Gaur executive produce along with Sheena Bucktowonsing, Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.
The Forsyte Saga Season 1 is expected to debut on most PBS stations in 2025.

Daughter of Mine | Megan Miranda | Published 2024 | *SPOILERS* | ARC
The new thrilling novel from Megan Miranda, the instant New York Times bestselling author of All the Missing Girls, The Last to Vanish and The Only Survivors.
when Hazel Sharp, daughter of Mirror Lake's longtime local detective, unexpectedly inherits her childhood home, she's warily drawn back to the town - and people - she left behind almost a decade earlier. But Hazel's not the only relic of the past to a drought has descended on the region, and as the water level in the lake drops, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge...including evidence that may help finally explain the mystery of her mother's disappearance.
Hazel Sharp returns to Mirror Lake after the death of her father, Perry Holt. She reunited with her brothers, Gage and Caden, but their relationships with each other have a lot to leave desired. When Hazel receives word from her uncle Roy, Perry's brother and the family lawyer, that Perry has left her his home in the will, she is shocked.
The shock mostly comes from the fact that she and Perry, along with Gage and Caden, are not related biologically. Hazel's mother, Libby, married Perry when she was young and then suddenly disappeared when Hazel was a teenager, vanishing as if she were a ghost.
Due to several months without rain in the forecast in the small mountain town, Mirror Lake is losing its water, revealing the secrets buried underneath their waters. On the day of Perry's memorial, a car was removed from the water, and the following weekend when she returned to help her brothers clear up the house, watching her niece swim, Skyler ultimately locates another car under the swim platform in the alcove behind the Holt home.
The car, once removed, once belonged to Libby Sharp, and the suitcases that she took with her were located in the trunk of the car. But nothing else was found inside. Hazel later realizes that the first car found in the water belonged to Perry's first wife, once believed to have died in a biking accident when she hit a tree.
Hazel, despite wanting to return to her normal life, feels as if something crazy is happening in the town and within her home. She often feels the remnants of a person being in her home before she got there, and it's beginning to create paranoia for her.
In the meantime, she also rekindles a former romance with Nico, the son of one of Perry's partners in the police department, whose father had killed himself. Gage, Nico and Hazel once found a secret room hidden inside the Pritchard home where photos, of crime scenes, had once been found. Nico has kept that secret for his father for a long time, and soon enough, Hazel begins to question whether or not the elder Pritchard or even the younger Nico, were involved in the deaths of Audrey and Libby.
Ultimately, Hazel is able to decipher that it was neither Caden, Gage or Nico involved in the deaths of both of these women, and the disappearance of Jamie, her former best friend and Caden's wife. Jamie has been missing for several days, and is likely unaware that her own mother had died of an overdose.
Hazel is able to figure out that Jamie is being hidden away in the Mirror Lake Motel, and she was believed to have been involved in the death of a missing teenager, who was found near the Barrel, an overlook by the lake. It is discovered that he had snuck up on her while she was waiting for Hazel to bring Skyler to her, believing that someone was after her. In a moment of haste, Jamie pushed the teen to his deathg and ran, unaware that she had just killed a teenager.
And then she realizes that Caden and Gage weren't involved in some murder scheme with their father. It was Roy. Aubrey was intending to leave Perry for Roy, and that the two of them would be together. Perry, unaware of her plans to leave him for his brother, runs after her with the kids in the car, and unable to stop, she hit the car while riding her bicycle and died. Perry attempted to keep that fact hidden, as it had been an accident regardless of what happened, but Caden was riddled with guilt over what he witnessed inside of the car.
After confroting Hazel, Roy attempts to get rid of her but Caden arrives, understanding that he is no longer the family member he once thought he was and tells Hazel to run. Caden is shot in the process, and she eventually leads Roy into the water, where she is able to ride the currents to get away, but he is unable to withstand them and goes under the water.
In the end, Caden, Gage and Hazel get rid of their angst for each other, as Hazel was no more involved with her mother's leaving. Caden believed it to be his fault that she left, after he confessed to her what had happened to his mother. Libby, under the impression that her husband was involved in his first wife's murder and cover up of her death, attempted to flee, along with finding out that Roy was skimming funds from his work. In the end, Roy got rid of her, and made it seem that she had taken everything from Perry and disappeared, leaving her daughter behind.
The siblings now have an understanding of each other. The Holt family home will now be owned by the three of them, with Caden's family living in the home for the time being, and Hazel can begin to heal and move on, along with continuing what was once a hidden relationship between Nico and Hazel.

Review: Les Misérables, Norwich Theatre Royal
Review: Les Misérables, @Norwich_Theatre @lesmisofficial #LesMizTour
An accidental discovery of the UK tour of Les Misérables being in town leads me to my first trip to Norwich Theatre Royal “For when I come to any town…” I’d no intentions of going to the theatre when in Norwich as part of a sojourn in Norfolk but as it coincided with the arrival of the touring production of Les Misérables for its own extended stay at Norwich Theatre Royal, I couldn’t resist…

[April 30th, 2024] MASTERPIECE on PBS and Mammoth Screen today announce a major new reimagining of John Galsworthy’s Forsyte novels. Planned as a returning series, the first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition and betrayal.
The Forsyte Saga reunites MASTERPIECE with acclaimed British screenwriter Debbie Horsfield and UK production company Mammoth Screen, the team behind global television hit Poldark.
The stellar ensemble cast includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Millie Gibson, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Joshua Orpin, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.
BAFTA winner Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood) plays formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann, with Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast, True Blood) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co. Danny Griffin (Fate: The Winx Saga) plays his bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era) is Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love.
Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James, with Joshua Orpin (Titans) as James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son Soames. Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) plays Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with. Tom Durant Pritchard (This Is Going To Hurt) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.
Josette Simon OBE (Anatomy of a Scandal) is Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family, with Jamie Flatters (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as architect Philip Bosinney and Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) as lawyer Isaac Cole. Susan Hampshire, OBE (star of the 1967 BBC Forsyte Saga for which she received the first of her three lead actress Emmys), plays Lady Carteret.
The Forsyte Saga is directed by Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) and is produced by Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow). Filming begins in May, 2024 in locations in England, Wales and Italy.
Screenwriter Debbie Horsfield notes, “It was an honor to be asked to write a bold new reimagining of Galsworthy’s epic saga. Our show is in part a prequel to the events of the first book, but also an opportunity to expand the world and place the women of the family center stage. It’s a love letter to the original story while offering an exciting new perspective.”
Damien Timmer, CCO & Founder of Mammoth Screen said, “It’s thrilling to be teaming up again with Debbie on this iconic story. Everything about The Forsyte Saga is huge – it’s an epic canvas, and Debbie’s magnificent scripts have delivered a truly great ensemble cast. I hope audiences worldwide will be captivated by the secrets of Soames, Irene, Jolyon and other Forsyte family members as they are laid bare for a new generation of fans!”
Susanne Simpson, Executive Producer of MASTERPIECE, added, “We’re proud to commission a new, original take on The Forsyte Saga. This sweeping, romantic drama portrays how duty binds a family together until it conflicts with matters of the heart. Debbie Horsfield’s inspired scripts will be realized by an exceptional cast and supported by a lavish production. We’re thrilled to be creating another one of the high-quality period dramas that MASTERPIECE has always been known for.”
The Forsyte Saga was previously adapted as a Hollywood film in 1949 and for television in 1967 and 2002. The 2002 series aired on MASTERPIECE on PBS
