She taught me that there would always be somewhere to return to when I felt alienated or afraid, by showing me that home, and the road my ancestors paved for me to get there, ultimately resides within me.

If you want to ban uplifting stories with people of color, just say that. Based on this list, my office library is in complete violation. 🤷🏾♀️😂 Oh well. All of my students love the books that I share with them. Especially the ones that they do not normally get to see. 🤓📚

Sorted: Growing Up, Coming Out and Finding My Place by Jackson Bird
goodreads
An unflinching and endearing memoir from LGBTQ+ advocate Jackson Bird about how he finally sorted things out and came out as a transgender man. When Jackson Bird was twenty-five, he came out as transgender to his friends, family, and anyone in the world with an internet connection. Assigned female at birth and raised as a girl, he often wondered if he should have been born a boy. Jackson didn’t share this thought with anyone because he didn’t think he could share it with anyone. Growing up in Texas in the 1990s, he had no transgender role models. He barely remembers meeting anyone who was openly gay, let alone being taught that transgender people existed outside of punchlines. In this “soulful and heartfelt coming-of-age story” (Jamia Wilson, director and publisher of the Feminist Press), Jackson chronicles the ups and downs of growing up gender-confused. Illuminated by journal entries spanning childhood to adolescence to today, he candidly recalls the challenges and loneliness he endured as he came to terms with both his gender and his bisexual identity. With warmth and wit, Jackson also recounts how he navigated the many obstacles and quirks of his transition––like figuring out how to have a chest binder delivered to his NYU dorm room and having an emotional breakdown at a Harry Potter fan convention. From his first shot of testosterone to his eventual top surgery, Jackson lets you in on every part of his journey—taking the time to explain trans terminology and little-known facts about gender and identity along the way.
Mod opinion: I haven't read this book and I personally definitely won't because this is one trans memoir that aged very, very badly due to how entrenched in the hp fandom it is.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day
I was gifted the book Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War! The book is being published by an imprint of Lerner books (www.lernerbooks.com). The book was researched by children’s author, Talia Aikens-Nunez whose previous publications include the OMG series. Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War is a nonfiction chapter book. While war history is not really my favorite subject to read about, Aikens-Nunez does a great job of capturing your attention with a great introduction. The book is filled with great facts and maps at the beginning of each chapter. I love the inclusion of a glossary as well as a bibliography. While it was a struggle for me to read because of the topic, I really appreciated learning about a facet of history I was not super-familiar with before.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 (1/26/22) is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Ten years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.

Check out our executive director Jamia’s article in Refinery29!
“We don’t have time for infighting. For every minute people of conscience waste fighting over what we should prioritize and tackle first, Trump-era emboldened white supremacists are developing their sickeningly sophisticated understanding of how to feed the monster they created to reinforce their deadly ‘identity politics’ at our expense. In a political landscape where our president and his administration refuse to condemn racial hatred with the force it deserves, we must govern ourselves by our own moral compass. It’s time for us to show up for each other again and again, like Viola and Heather, until love indeed trumps hate.”

📚New Book Release
Big Ideas for Young Thinkers: 20 Questions about Life and the Universe
Jamia Wilson
Andrea Pippins
Wide Eyed Editions
What is justice? What is freedom? What is bias? ... And who gets to have big ideas?
Studies show that children ask caregivers 300 questions a day during meals, trips to the market, and before bedtime. This book teaches children to think critically and discuss ideas in a world that needs bright young thinkers. Jamia Wilson expertly explores the difficult questions kids may ask by relating them to real-life examples and introducing a diverse range of thinkers and luminaries. Drawing on influences from ancient Greeks right up to modern-day American writers, the idea of philosophy – and who gets to have big ideas – is reimagined.
