Sad, but not unexpected news. Taron Egerton has departed the Mike Bartlett play COCK.

On Egerton's first night in previews he fainted during the last act. He sat out a performance or two and returned. Then in a matter of days he tested positive for Covid-19. The reasons cited for his exit is "personal reasons".
As many roles gigs as Egerton has taken on like Apple+s film about the founder of TETRIS and Apple+s limited series BLACK BIRD (costarring Paul Walter Hauser).

Based on the true crime story âIn With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemptionâ by James Keene and Hillel Levin.
What's it all about?
Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero, decorated policemanâs son, and convicted drug dealer Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum-security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime â enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hallâs appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries.Â
he has also departed a few roles in recent months. After two seasons he departed the role of Mommintroll in Sky's MOMMINVALLEY series.
BUT HE LEFT US WITH THIS LOVELY SONG
youtube
You can hear new Moomintroll Jack Rowan in these clips from the series 3 opener.
youtube
He also departed Clair Denis' THE STARS AT NOON
His replacement Joe Alwyn.

Aaron Dessner:Â I was excited and honored when Taylor approached me in late April about maybe writing some songs remotely together. I had been isolating with my family but writing a ton of music in the first months of quarantine which I shared. I thought it would take a while for song ideas to come and I had no expectations as far as what we could accomplish remotely. But a few hours after sharing music, my phone lit up with a voice memo from Taylor of a fully written version of a song - the momentum never really stopped. Over the next few months, we remotely finished 11 songs (She also recorded several others with the amazing @jackantonoff) of her magical new album âfolkloreâ. I've rarely been so inspired by someone and itâs still hard to believe this even happened - these songs came together in such a challenging time. It wouldn't haven't been possible without so much help from first and foremost my engineer Jon Low (@heyjonlow). And my brother @brycedessner's beautiful orchestration on several songs from across the ocean. Justin (@blobtower) helped to write and sing a beautiful song and so many other friends from our community contributed brilliantly from their respective isolation â Ben Lanz (@lanzprojects), Bryan Devendorf (@postmoderndrummer), Bryce Dessner, @claricejensen, Dave Nelson (@dnelnelson), James McAlister (@900x), @jasontreuting, Josh Kaufman (@kaufyismynamo), JT Bates (@floortomjtbates), Kyle Resnick (@kresnick), Rob Moose (@mooserob), Thomas Bartlett (@tingalayo), and Yuki Numata Resnick (@kiyukiyukiyuki) â More on them later! I'm very proud of all these songs and profoundly grateful to @taylorswift for inviting me into and trusting me in her process. She is one of the most talented, hardworking and deeply caring artists I've ever encountered. There's a palpable humanity and warmth and raw emotion in these songs that I hope you'll love and take comfort in as much as I do. Album art by @bethgarrabrant.

Performance for Multi-User Online Environments (Before COVID-19)
Iâm Angela Washko and I am currently teaching a course called Performance Art (In The Expanded Field) at Carnegie Mellon University and have recently had to switch to teaching remotely - a switch that comes maybe more naturally to me than others because of my experience participating in the net art community and operating as a performance artist specifically within online environments. Before everyone was forced to work remotely because of an international pandemic, many artists were already thinking about the internet as a context for performance art. I wanted to put together a resource focused on artists who have been doing the work of thinking about the specificity of virtual spaces as sites for performance and making work mindful of the unique qualities of the contexts they operate in. I hope that this list of works could be a resource for educators and artists who are interested in looking at artworks by individuals who have been thinking very intentionally about performance in networked contexts.
This list includes artists performing for webcam, artists performing in virtual environments, and artists performing for social media. It specifically focuses on performance, and excludes works of net art that do not contain performance-for-the-internet. The list also primarily focuses on performance works that are made without the use of expensive equipment or access to institutional spaces (although I know there are some exceptions on this list). Also - it is in no way complete or comprehensive!Â
*This list does not include the many artists who perform for video and upload their performances online - UNLESS the artist is specifically thinking about engaging with the digital audience and not prioritizing the gallery as a context.Â
**Sexually explicit or violent content that may be uncomfortable for some viewers and situations

The fall solstice is only days from breaking over the Crimson City. Heat is a rare commodity to the residents of Chicago, so they part with it bitterly every year at the annual End-of-Summer Festival. The season goes out with a bang and the rumble of food trucks every summer as patrons waltz their way down the Chicago art walk, indulge in all things saucy and boozy at the Chicago Bourbon and BBQ Festival, get in touch with nature at the Chicago craft beer tasting at the zoo, and shop at the Chicago flea market littered with street merchants from all over the country. Of course, the real selling point every year is the annual Chicago bar crawl, which sweeps guests through Cook Countyâs best bars, like The Pint, Rousseauâs, Cataleya, Wolves and Skyfall Bar. To attract more customers, each bar, restaurant, and clubâeven what goes on behindâwill be steeply discounted for the ultimate occasion.Â
And if youâre a little territorial, donât sweat itâno metal detectors will be necessary at the End-of-Summer Festival. Who would want to ruin all this fun, anyway ?!
Part I of the End-of-Summer Festival begins at 7:15 P.M. CST and will conclude on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 at 7 P.M. CST. You may continue your non-event threads through the event, however we ask you donât post any starters unless they pertain to the event
Under the cut are plot slots you may claim for this event; just send your preferred slot to the main. Plots slots are a first come, first serve basis.
Weâre going to allow each person to choose two plot slots for two characters max .If there are any leftovers, weâll let members know when they can sign up for thirds. Please try to pick one pertaining to your character and plot with those that take the other spots.
Youâll notice that some of these plots are public, so feel free to have your character react to them/ notice them even if they arenât happening directly to your character. However, if something feels like it happened privately to another character, please check in with their Mun to see if itâs okay for your character to know.
To be clear: these are not the only things that happen to your character during this plot drop and you are more than welcome to cook up your own trouble.
1. IRA EVANS talks BIRDIE MENDOZA into taking five shots in under ten minutes. Now, itâs up to IRA EVANS to lug BIRDIE MENDOZA to each location on the bar crawl. Good luckâwe hear theyâre sloppy.
2. [LINCOLN ROSSI ] is having trouble finding their way out of the parking garage when they find [ CHARACTER D ] drunkenly screaming at an intoxicated [ CHARACTER E ]. [ LINCOLN ROSSI ] decides to guide them back to the party before they get lost.

[ AUTUMN DAWSON ] tries to ward the goat off from the sidelines while [ MARCEL WALSH ] returns to their feet to make their escape.
7. [ OAKLEY BUTLER ] is showing off their artwork at the art walk. [ LEONID 'LEO' VASILE ] buys a piece and tries to scam it a few booths down. [ OAKLEY BUTLER ] busts them after a civilian buys the piece of artwork for triple the price. The confrontation is no bueno.

28. [ GWENDOLYN "GWEN" ARNOLDS ] is probably the only poor sober soul, and they use this to charge [ JACKSON MARSTON ] to be their DD. However, they both witness when [ GWENDOLYN "GWEN" ARNOLDSâs] car is towed away for parking in the wrong spot. Â
29. A discounted tattoo shop sits along the art walk and is charging only $20 for a small tattoo. 33. [ VICTOR 'VIC' VOLKOV ] strikes a conversation with [ IGOR VASILE ] over a piece of artwork. [ VICTOR 'VIC' VOLKOV ] buys the artwork only to find out it was counterfeit from the Art Museum. [ IGOR VASILE ] ends up purchasing the real one. They start to argue which one is the real one.Â
34. [ CHARLOTTE "CHARLIE" ARDEN] is running a booth at the flea market and notices [ CHARACTER W2 ] pocket something from an adjacent vendor. [ CHARLOTTE "CHARLIE" ARDEN ] promises not to squeal if [ CHARACTER W2 ] works with them at the booth for an hour.
35. [ JESSIKA DELMONICO] & [ KELLEN WASHINGTON ] break out into a paint fight at an abandoned art booth. [ JESSIKA DELMONICO ] is splashed with a neon green paint in the face. [ KELLEN WASHINGTON ] tries to run away, but not before [ CHARACTER X2 ] splashes their back with a brown paint. Did they shit themselves??
36. [ CHARACTER Z2 ] ducks out of the way from a flying object that crashes the window of a closed shop. The alarms start to blare, and before [ CHARACTER Z2 ] can leave the scene they see [ CHARACTER A3 ] about to launch something else.Â
37. [ TALIA ARSLAN ] eats a bad hot dog from a food truck, and [ DANICA SINCLAIR ] helps them to the nearest bar for a bathroom and a cool drink. [ TALIA ARSLAN ] talks [ DANICA SINCLAIR ] into doing shots when theyâre feeling better.
38. [ LEV VASILE ] takes a few healthy tokes of the joint theyâve been saving for an occasion, and [ GENEVIEVE BISSET ] asks if theyâre willing to share. They both light up and head on a self-guided tour to the food trucks.
39. [ CHARACTER F3 ] and [ CHARACTER G3 ] get into an argument with [ MATHIAS ATTANO ] after they lose at a drinking game for the third time in a row. [ MATHIAS ATTANO ] has been cheating the whole time and now has to lose [ CHARACTER F3 ] and [ CHARACTER G3 ] in the crowd.

The Cannibal & the Consulting Criminal: How Silence and Sherlock Taught Me to Read
(Iâm writing a series of autobiographical essays. This meta is a messy. messy warm upâŚ) Â
PART I: Â TSotL The Odd Flash of Contextual Intelligence
Know your intertexts (and the limits of their influence)
Iâve spent a LOT of time writing about the influence of Harris on Mark Gatiss in particular. We have Harris to thank for Sherlockâs mind palace for starters. Moriarty and Dr. Lecter share many traits. Then again so do the psychiatrist and Sherlock. Iâll come back to these obvious connections between Sherlock and TSotL in a later part of this meta. (The connections are actually quite superficial.) For now I want to return to my first obsession: the genius cannibal who taught me how to read and the fandom that saved me from him.
Do your research.
Thomas Harris, author of The Silence of the Lambs, choses every word with great care. How many people, for example, do you know called Hannibal? Clarice is more common I suppose, but itâs certainly not a run-of-the-mill monicker. While starlings are the most common of birds have you ever met someone with that surname? Have you ever met a Lecter? Â What if I told you there is an extremely obscure historical figure called Hannibal the Starling? (Youâll find the reference in Smithâs Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology if you seek.) Would you think that Harris must have heard of that man? Possibly. Possibly. If I told you that Harris makes most of his charactersâ names upâ that they sound plausible enough, but unless youâre an everyman like a Jack Crawford or a Will Graham youâre a Francis Dolarhyde or an Ardelia Mapp.
Ardelia Mapp? In the novel Ardelia is Clarice Starlingâs roommate at the FBI academy. When exams roll around and Clarice has been too busy hunting Buffalo Bill to read her textbooks, itâs Ardelia who makes sure that Clarice knows all about search and seizures. Adelia Mapp. Ardeila Mapp. What kind of name is that? It helps if we cram along with Clarice:
Mapp v. Ohio, 367 U.S. 643 (1961), was a landmark case in criminal procedure, in which the United States Supreme Court decided that evidence obtained in violation of the Fourth Amendment, which protects against âunreasonable searches and seizuresâ, may not be used in criminal prosecutions in state [or] federal courts. (x)
Hey Thomas Harris!
Recognize when thereâs a joke and youâre not getting it.
Thomas Harris amuses himself with language. Clarice comes from the Latin root clar and the words related to pertain to brilliance and light and the illustrative. And Lecter? So many people have tried to trace its origins but all becomes clear when you think about its etymology. In Latin lector means reader.
Clariceâs boss, Jack Crawford, likes to quote impressive sounding things out of context. Dr. Lecter mocks him for picking and choosing passages of the Meditations of the Roman Emperor, Stoic philosopher, and persecutor of Christians, Marcus Aurelius.
âIâve read the cases, Clarice, have you? Everything you need to know to find him is right there [in the case files], if youâre paying attention. Even Inspector Emeritus, Crawford should have figured it out. Incidentally, did you read Crawfordâs stupefying speech last year to the National Police academy? Spouting Marcus Aurelius on duty and honor and fortitudeâ weâll see what kind of a Stoic Crawford is when Bella [his wife] bites the big one. He copies his philosophy out of Bartlettâs Familiar, I think. If he understood Marcus Aurelius, he might solve this case.â Â âTell me how.â Â âWhen you show the odd flash of contextual intelligence, I forget your generation canât read, Clarice. The Emperor councils simplicity. First principles. Of each particular thing, ask: What is it in itself, in its own constitution? What is its causal nature?â Â âThat doesnât mean anything to me.â Â âWhat does he do, the man you want?â
I could go on and on about how Harris allows Dr. Lecter to reference Stoicism and all kinds of other ideas for his own amusement. I say amusement because the reader need not understand Dr. Lecterâs jokes to enjoy Harrisâ books. Clarice doesnât and she doesnât pretend to. Oh how Dr. Lecter fancies his student! I could go on and on because the entire fucking book is a compendium of in-jokes. That in itself is Stoic food for thought. Diogenes Laertius recounts a Stoic idea that Harris likes to chew on.
âSome appearances are expert (technikai), others are inexpert; at any rate a picture is observed differently by an expert and the inexpert person.â
Julia Annas explains:
A non-expert will just see figures; the expert will see figures that represent gods. Â The expert is rightâ there really is that significance- and the non-expert is missing something. What is more surprising to us is the claim that the appearance is itself âexpert.â The expert is not seeing anything that is not there for the ignoramus to see. Â It is the fault of the ignoramus that he fails to see what is to be seen, because he fails to understand the content of what is presents to him. (82) - Hellenistic Philosophy of Mind by Julia Annas
Lecter, the consummate reader, is the expert. Clarice, whoâs not more than one generation from the mines, is the ignoramus. Â Yet she shows the odd flash of contextual intelligence.
Discern clues from NOISE.
Though their relationship was weird, close, and lasting Clarice would never realize that Dr. Lecter gave her everything she needed to know to catch Buffalo Bill the first time they met!
On that fateful day, with instructions from Jack Crawford to note anything and everything she sees, Clarice shows enough intelligence to asks Dr. Lecter about the drawings in his cell. Dr. Lecter replies:
Itâs Florence. Thatâs the Palazzo Vecchio and the Duomo, seen from the Belvedere. Do you know Florence?â
If Clarice were prepared "to readâ Dr. Lecterâs work, she might have understood the significance of the image. Sheâs the very model of the Stoic ignoramus.
Clarice finds Buffalo Bill/Jame Gumb by recognizing his personal acquaintance with the first victim he skinned, Fredrica Bimmel. They both lived in Belvedere, Ohio where Clarice finds Gumb while Crawfordâs teams go all SWAT on John Grantâs last known address. We find out later in the novel that Dr. Lecter knew Gumb lived in Belvedere, Ohio. Â Perhaps he was musing on the facts of the case while composing his sketches.
Jack Crawford, of all people, should have noticed the name âBelvedereâ and made the connection. Â His dying wifeâs name is Phyllis but heâs called her Bella for most of their entire relationship. Phyllis and Jack were both stationed in Italy and during one of their outings, a man called Phyllis âBella,â or beauty. Â Bella is the feminine form; âbelâ is the masculine form, as in bel vedere, or beautiful view. Â We learn later that Clarice has to work hard to trick herself into seeing any beauty in Belvedere, Ohio. Â
Now youâve got the facts. Theorize with them.
There is another explanation as to why Crawford might have missed the clue in Dr. Lecterâs drawing from Clariceâs notes. Â Clarice does not know Italian. How would she have written the sketchâs title in her report? Dr. Lecter does not say, when she asks about the sketch, that is is the Old Plaza and the Dome seen from the Belvedere (pronounced in English, be-vuh-deer as in Belvedere, Ohio). Dr. Lecter says all the proper names in Italian except âFlorence.â Florence is the English name for the city Italians call Firenze. Â Clariceâs ear would catch âFlorenceâ and it may be that her report stated that the sketch was of Florence, but no further details. Â She doesnât, after all, ask Dr. Lecter how to spell the names of the places with which she is unfamiliar. Â Crawford, reading a reasonably detailed report from Clarice, might have only noted that Dr. Lecter was sketching Florenceâ enough detail for a report if you donât know what youâre looking at. Â Clarice, while an ignoramus in the Stoic sense, shows potential. Â Dr. Lecter is polite when he surmises that she is âinnocent of the Gospel of St. John.â He calls her innocent, not ignorant. Â Sheâs simply not an expert in iconography. She sees all she can see in the image. Â Crawford, however, is experienced enough with Dr. Lecter to know how important images are to him. Â Will Graham captured Dr. Lecter in Red Dragon by recognizing that one of his victims was posed in a tableau of a Wound Man in one of Dr. Lecterâs books. Â Graham was an expert. We canât be sure from simply reading the text that Dr. Lecter isnât making the epiphany of âBelvedereâ especially difficult to decode even if Clarice were to have written a verbatim transcript of their discussion. In speech Dr. Lecter may be pronouncing the proper names as an American would, or, alternately, with an Italian accent. Â He could be pronouncing the incidental proper names (Palazzo Vecchio and the Duomo) in an Italian accent and âBelvedereâ in an American accent to dare Clarice and Jack to take notice. Or, he could be pronouncing all the names in an Italian accent, a fact could be lost in translation between Clarice, innocent of Italian, and Crawford, who knows just enough to have had an epiphany. Each scenario is possible and each reveals a slightly different interpretation of Dr. Lecterâs motives. If we take Thomas Harris himself as the final authority, in the audiobook Harris reads Dr. Lecterâs part. Harris says all proper nouns including âBelvedereâ with an Italian accent (albeit with a Mississippi drawl.)
Yeah ok SO WHAT?! And what about Sherlock?!
In Part II Iâll talk about TSotL as an intertext to Sherlock and the limits of this influence. Iâll compare Dr. Lecterâs method of reading to James Moriartyâs. Iâll talk about why & how I crawled out of the cannibalâs skull and into the consulting criminalâs and where I am going next⌠Or I just might try to revamp this to make more sense. I dunnoâŚ

2019 Tony Awards Trivia
This is the stat that Iâve seen get the most attention, and itâs a really cool one: Jeremy Pope, whoâs nominated in Leading Actor in a Play for Choir Boy and Featured Actor in a Musical for Ainât Too Proud, is the sixth actor in Tonys history to be nominated in two different categories in the same year. Pope is only the second to be nominated for both a play and a musical in the same year, the first actor of color to achieve this distinction, as well as the first member of the LGBTQ+ community. The others are: Amanda Plummer (Leading Actress in a Play nominee for A Taste of Honey and Featured Actress in a Play winner for Agnes of God in 1982), Dana Ivey (Featured Actress in a Musical nominee for Sunday in the Park with George and Featured Actress in a Play nominee for Heartbreak House in 1984), Kate Burton (Leading Actress in a Play nominee for Hedda Gabler and Featured Actress in a Play nominee for The Elephant Man in 2002), Jan Maxwell (Leading Actress in a Play nominee for The Royal Family and Featured Actress in a Play nominee for Lend Me a Tenor in 2010), and Mark Rylance (Leading Actor in a Play nominee for Richard III and Featured Actor in a Play winner for Twelfth Night in 2014).
A few notable firsts: Ali Stroker (Oklahoma!)Â is the first actor who uses a wheelchair to be nominated for a Tony. Paddy Considine (The Ferryman) is the first actor with autism to be nominated for a Tony.Â
Heidi Schreck (What the Constitution Means to Me) is the third person in Tonys history to be nominated for Best Play and Best Actress for the same show in the same year. She joins Anna Deavere Smith (Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992) and Claudia Shear (Dirty Blonde).Â
Oklahoma! is one of the landmark American musicals and, as of yesterdayâs nominations, has received a total of seventeen competitive nominations and a special award in 1993. The only competitive award the show has ever won is for Featured Actor in a Musical in 2002 for Shuler Hensley.Â
Director Rachel Chavkin only has two Broadway credits to her name, but both shows led the nomination count in their respective Tonys ceremonies: Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 received twelve (eventually winning two), while Hadestown scored fourteen nominations.Â
AnaĂŻs Mitchell (Hadestown) is the 41st woman nominated in the Best Score category. If she won, she would be the seventh woman to win (joining Betty Comden, Lynn Ahrens, Lisa Lambert, Cyndi Lauper, Jeanine Tesori, and Lisa Kron), and she would be only the second woman to win the award as a solo composer, following Lauper in 2013.
Dominique Morisseau (Ainât Too Proud)Â is the first black woman nominated for Best Book since Lita Gaithers in 1999, who was nominated for It Ainât Nothinâ But the Blues.Â
If either Kiss Me, Kate or All My Sons wins their respective Best Revival category, they would join The King and I, La Cage aux Folles, Death of a Salesman, and A View from the Bridge as the only shows to win Best Revival twice.Â
Some of the roles nominated this year have previously been nominated for or won Oscars. These roles include Scout Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird), Michael Dorsey (Tootsie), and Sandy Lester (Tootsie), while the roles Howard Beale (Network), Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird), and Julie Nichols (Tootsie) have all won Oscars.Â
A few actors are back with a returning Tony nomination after a lengthy gap: Annette Bening (All My Sons) received her second nomination, her first coming in 1987 for Coastal Disturbances; Fionnula Flanagan (The Ferryman) also received her second nomination, with her first coming from further back in 1974 for Ulysses in Nighttown. Mary Testa and AndrĂŠ De Shields both received their third nominations (she for Oklahoma!, he for Hadestown), the first for each of them since their last nomination in 2001 (she for 42nd Street, he for The Full Monty).Â
Some roles that received nominations this year that have previously been nominated or won: Chris Keller in All My Sons (Benjamin Walker in 2019, Jamey Sheridan in 1987), Larry in Burn This (Brandon Uranowitz in 2019, Lou Liberatore in 1988), Lilli Vanessi in Kiss Me, Kate (Kelli OâHara in 2019, Marin Mazzie in 2000), Curly in Oklahoma! (Damon Daunno in 2019, Patrick Wilson in 2002), and Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! (Andrea Martin in 2002, Mary Testa in 2019).
Ainât Too Proud is the first jukebox bio-musical nominated for Best Musical since Beautiful in 2014, and the sixth ever nominated, joining The Boy from Oz (2004), Jersey Boys (2006), Fela! (2010), Million Dollar Quartet (2010), and Beautiful (2014).
With his double nominations for Tootsie and Beetlejuice, William Ivey Long remains the most nominated costume designer in Tonys history, with 17 total. This is also his second year with two nominations, having also been nominated for both La Cage aux Folles and A Streetcar Named Desire in 2005.Â
This is the first time ever that there are six nominees in the Best Score category. To Kill a Mockingbird is the eighth non-musical play to be nominated in this category, joining Much Ado About Nothing (1973), The Song of Jacob Zulu (1993), Twelfth Night (1999), ENRON (2010), Fences (2010), Peter and the Starcatcher (2012), One Man, Two Guvnors (2012), and Angels in America (2018). This is the first time a non-musical play has been nominated in this category in consecutive years.
Kelli OâHara received her seventh Tony nomination for Kiss Me, Kate, her sixth in the Leading Actress in a Musical category, tying her with Sutton Foster and Bernadette Peters. Chita Rivera still reigns supreme in that category, with eight nominations.
The Prom is the 14th musical to get multiple Leading Actress nominations. The others: New Girl in Town (1958), Company (1971), Follies (1972), Chicago (1976), Annie (1977), Dreamgirls (1982), The Rink (1984), Black and Blue (1989), Guys and Dolls (1992), Side Show (1998), Urinetown (2002), Wicked (2004), and War Paint (2017).Â
If Tootsie wins Best Musical, David Yazbek will be the fourth person to work as composer on back-to-back Best Musical winners, joining Richard Adler and Jerry Ross (The Pajama Game and Damn Yankees) and Cy Coleman (City of Angels and The Will Rogers Follies).Â
With both Ainât Too Proud and Hadestown, This is the fifth time that two shows received at least two nominations in Featured Actor in a Musical. The others are Fiorello! and The Sound of Music (1960), The Producers and The Full Monty (2001), Hairspray and Movinâ Out (2003), and Something Rotten! and An American in Paris (2015).
Scott Ellis (Tootsie) has broken his tie with James Lapine to become the director with most nominations for Direction of a Musical without a win.
With his nomination for Kiss Me, Kate, orchestrator Larry Hochman is a nine-time Tony nominee and is now second behind Jonathan Tunick as the most nominated orchestrator of all-time.
Peter Nigrini is the first person in Tonys history nominated for both Scenic Design of a Musical and Lighting Design of a Musical in the same year. Heâs nominated for Ainât Too Proudâs set with Robert Brill and for Beetlejuiceâs lights with Kenneth Posner.
Some stats on how many times the ten nominated directors have been nominated before: this is the tenth directing nomination for Garyâs George C. Wolfe (previously won for Angels in America: Millennium Approaches in 1993 and Bring in âda Noise, Bring in âda Funk in 1996, and previously nominated for Jellyâs Last Jam in 1992, Angels in America: Perestroika in 1994, Caroline, or Change in 2004, The Normal Heart with Joel Grey in 2011, Lucky Guy in 2013, Shuffle Along in 2016, and The Iceman Cometh in 2018); this is the ninth directing nomination for Tootsieâs Scott Ellis (previously nominated for She Loves Me in 1994, Steel Pier in 1997, 1776 in 1998, Twelve Angry Men in 2005, Curtains in 2007, The Mystery of Edwin Drood in 2013, You Canât Take It With You in 2015, and She Loves Me in 2016) and To Kill a Mockingbirdâs Bartlett Sher (previously won for South Pacific in 2008, and previously nominated for The Light in the Piazza in 2005, Awake and Sing! in 2006, Joe Turnerâs Come and Gone in 2009, Golden Boy in 2013, The King and I in 2015, Oslo in 2017, and My Fair Lady in 2018); this is the fifth directing nomination for Ainât Too Proudâs Des McAnuff (previously won for Big River in 1985 and The Whoâs Tommy in 1993, and previously nominated for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 1995 and Jersey Boys in 2006) and The Promâs Casey Nicholaw (previously won with Trey Parker for The Book of Mormon in 2011, and previously nominated for The Drowsy Chaperone in 2006, Something Rotten! in 2015, and Mean Girls in 2018); this is the second directing nomination for Hadestownâs Rachel Chavkin (previously nominated for Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 in 2017), Inkâs Rupert Goold (previously nominated for King Charles III in 2016), The Ferrymanâs Sam Mendes (previously nominated with Rob Marshall for Cabaret in 1998), and Networkâs Ivo van Hove (previously won for A View from the Bridge in 2016); this is the first directing nomination for Daniel Fish (Oklahoma!).
