MegaCon 2023 Highlights:

It was great finally getting to attend a convention again after holding off the past 3 years. I've missed being around so many creative cosplayers and artists all in one place!

That said, since we could only attend for Thursday and Friday, there's a lot that we sadly missed out on. However there are a few moments in particular that stuck out to me:

Winning Jojo Trivia

Charlie and I got teamed up with an awesome group of Jojo wiz kids and ended up winning this rad poster plus some stickers!

Meeting Bowser, Dressed as Bowser

Since I was dressed as the Koopa King on Friday I took the opportunity to meet Kenny James and get a photo with him. I acknowledged that my take on Bowser is heavily Jack Black-inspired, but he was still very nice and thought my costume was great! 😄

Solid Snake Squeezes (and Signs) My Hog!

Last but not least, we got to meet David Hayter! And for the occasion we brought two squeezable hog toys (one for him to sign and one given to him as a gift). Needless to say he was eager to oblige xD

Overall, despite it being such a short trip, I think MegaCon went over as well as I could have hoped for! Hoping to some up with some great cosplay ideas and gradually work my way back into the convention scene over the next few years!

X2: X-Men United (2003)

There have been A LOT superhero movies since the genre really blew up in 2000 with X-Men. The fact that X2: X-Men United remains one of the best means a lot. There aren’t many sequels which top their predecessors but this is one of them. Full of great character moments with the characters we've come to love and with plenty of contestants for new favorites, it’s got action, suspense and many reasons to come revisit it over and over again.

After Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) - a teleporting, blue-skinned mutant - attempts to assassinate the U.S. President (Cotter Smith), he allows William Stryker (Brian Cox) to shut down Charles Xavier’s school for mutants. Actually, Stryker's goal isn't merely to capture the mutants; he wants Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and his mutant tracking computer, Cerebro. With their leader gone and the students on the run, the X-Men have no choice but to turn to Magneto (Ian McKellen) for help.

When we met Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), the film took us for a loop by revealing that the most important mutant at Xavier's school was Rogue (Anna Paquin), not him. This twist made us even more eager to learn about Logan’s past. Was his adamantium-laced skeleton and those mechanical retractable claws (the series hadn’t yet retconned these to be a natural part of his mutation) some kind of ultimate weapon program gone wrong? Something forced upon our amnesiac hero? The answer comes in the form of the mutant-hating Stryker, a great baddie that poses an extreme threat because he’s smart and ruthless. There are some deliciously gross and squishy moments waiting for you as you piece together the lengths he’ll go to. It gives me the willies thinking about what he did to his mutant son - almost as much as learning what his son did to his mother.

There are many scenes to make your skin crawl. Magneto’s escape from his plastic prison (a favourite moment of mine), the final battle between Wolverine and Lady Death Strike (Kelly Hu), Stryker’s domination of Magneto…. you probably didn't expect those fom an action superhero film. Neither did you foresee the emotional blows. Bobby “Iceman” Drake (Shawn Ashmore) betrayed by his brother, the children being taken away by Stryker’s forces in the middle of the night, Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) teasing Wolverine with her shapeshifting powers, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) sacrificing herself... There’s a lot going on. A lot to love.

It’s hard to pick a favourite thing about this follow-up. You suddenly find yourself routing for the mutant terrorist Magneto because we’ve been given an even bigger, more sinister foe for our heroes. That’s no small feat. X2 is a confident picture with a lot of balls in the air and director Brian Singer (who’s fallen out of favour today but was a wizard behind the camera) keeps them all afloat, all perfectly distanced to keep the balance and the excitement flowing smoothly.

What’s there NOT to like in X2? It builds on the success of the first in so many meaningful ways. You see the younger X-Men grow into adults, the love triangle between Jean, Wolverine and Scott “Cyclops” Summers (James Marsden) get even more tangled, heroes like Storm (Halle Berry) in a whole new light and villains suddenly become heroes. This film gives you a lot to digest, making it a superhero adventure you eagerly return to over and over. (On Blu-ray, May 19, 2019)

Jealousy in Jane Austen's Works

Since I got an ask about this recently, how does Jane Austen use jealousy in her novels?

Justified Jealousy (a person has made promises to another and is now violating them):

Catherine for her brother James, when Isabella flirts with Captain Tilney (Northanger Abbey) "jealous for her brother" and James for himself.

Lucy about Edward and Elinor: "That Lucy was disposed to be jealous of her appeared very probable: it was plain that Edward had always spoken highly in her praise, not merely from Lucy’s assertion, but from her venturing to trust her on so short a personal acquaintance, with a secret so confessedly and evidently important." (Sense & Sensibility) Lucy is right that Edward has fallen for Elinor, wrong that he would betray her because of it.

Sophia Grey, about Marianne Dashwood and Willoughby (her betrothed) "and Sophia, jealous as the devil on the other hand, looking all that was" (Sense & Sensibility)

Mr. Rushworth, about Maria and Henry Crawford, "I do think that Mr. Rushworth was sometimes very jealous." (Mansfield Park)

The reactions to this justified jealousy are all different. James Morland endures for a little while, then breaks off his engagement. This was the healthiest thing to do. Lucy attacks the rival instead of addressing the issue with her fiance. Mr. Rushworth ultimately ignores the fact that his future wife loves someone else, and agrees to a doomed marriage. Sophia Grey forces Willoughby to "break up" with Marianne, unsure how that goes for her, but at least she went into marriage with her eyes open.

Manipulative (Supposed) Jealousy:

Isabella to Catherine, when Catherine refuses to break a prior engagement with another friend, "I cannot help being jealous, Catherine, when I see myself slighted for strangers, I, who love you so excessively!" (Northanger Abbey)

Isabella tries to use jealousy to guilt Catherine into breaking her engagement with the Tilneys. Catherine finds it unjust and mean, she refuses to give in.

Jealousy as a Means to Establish Boundaries:

Henry Tilney, speaking about Catherine and John Thorpe, "I consider a country-dance as an emblem of marriage. Fidelity and complaisance are the principal duties of both; and those men who do not choose to dance or marry themselves, have no business with the partners or wives of their neighbours." (Northanger Abbey)

This is a particular case. I don't think Henry is in love with Catherine yet, and I don't think he actually believes that Catherine likes John, but he does frame his opposition to John and Catherine talking in jealousy. As Catherine has agreed to be his partner, he is justified in asking her to devote her time to him. Also, once Catherine assures him of her "faithfullness", he backs off, "Now you have given me a security worth having; and I shall proceed with courage". They have established their level of commitment.

Wanting Someone Who is Interested in Someone Else:

Caroline Bingley about Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, "Miss Bingley saw, or suspected, enough to be jealous; and her great anxiety for the recovery of her dear friend Jane received some assistance from her desire of getting rid of Elizabeth." (Pride & Prejudice)

Fanny Price, during the play about Edmund and Mary, "She was full of jealousy and agitation." (Mansfield Park)

Julia about her sister and Henry Crawford, "made even Julia admit, in her jealousy of her sister, the absolute necessity of distrusting his attentions" (Mansfield Park)

Charles Hayter of Captain Wentworth and Henrietta, "It was evident that Charles Hayter was not well inclined towards Captain Wentworth." (Persuasion)

We can assume that Colonel Brandon was jealous of Willoughby (Sense & Sensibility)

Both Colonel Brandon and Fanny Price keep their feelings to themselves. They do not pressure their object of affection or attack rivals. Colonel Brandon is even extremely hesitant to reveal what Willoughby has done to Eliza. Charles Hayter feels jealous of Captain Wentworth and quits the field, which helps Henrietta realize where her true affections lie.

Caroline Bingley and Julia both act out because of their jealousy. Julia sulks and Caroline attacks Elizabeth.

Jealousy as a Means to Realize Feelings:

Mary Crawford realizing that she loves Edmund, "She had, moreover, to contend with one disagreeable emotion entirely new to her—jealousy. His friend Mr. Owen had sisters; he might find them attractive." (Mansfield Park)

Mr. Knightley about Frank and Emma, "On his side, there had been a long-standing jealousy, old as the arrival, or even the expectation, of Frank Churchill.—He had been in love with Emma, and jealous of Frank Churchill, from about the same period, one sentiment having probably enlightened him as to the other. It was his jealousy of Frank Churchill that had taken him from the country." (Emma)

Captain Wentworth of Mr. Elliot and Anne, "Jealousy of Mr Elliot! It was the only intelligible motive. Captain Wentworth jealous of her affection!" (Persuasion)

These feelings are mostly presented as morally neutral. Mary Crawford takes no action against the Miss Owens, she just becomes more friendly to Edmund. Mr. Knightley does speak against Frank to Emma, but Emma disagrees with him about it. Captain Wentworth leaves when jealous, but does not impose his feelings upon Anne.

Other:

Emma supposes that Jane was jealous of her, but that's not completely clear from Jane's perspective, "No doubt it had been from jealousy.—In Jane’s eyes she had been a rival" (Emma)

Mrs. Elton jokes that Mr. Elton will be jealous because Mr. Woodhouse is so complimentary (Emma)

Mrs. Bennet is jealous of Charlotte Lucas's eventual position as the future mistress of Longbourn (Pride & Prejudice)

What You Don't See: No Austen hero displays possessive jealousy, like forbidding a heroine from seeing a male friend or dancing with other men at a ball. No male friendships are curtailed or challenged, which can be a common romance trope.

I ignored mentions of jealousy that didn't really relate to interpersonal relationships

Conclusion: Jane Austen shows a lot of healthy and unhealthy jealousy and reactions to it. Mr. Rushworth is stupid for ignoring that his fiance was in love with someone else, but Lucy attacking Elinor because Edward loved her was also wrong. Several main characters feel jealousy because their object of affection loves another, but they do not impose those feelings on others. Jealousy can help a person realize their true feelings. Establishing commitment can also be a healthy thing to do.

okay i couldn't wait and started reading the little family info dump before i finished my own research and lol i was missing a brother sorry archibald!!!!! for anyone interested in the little family, plz plz go look at the cold boys research central :D

i can't overstate how happy i am to be reading this, it's like getting a present! not only i feel self satisfied bc all things considered i did a pretty good job :) but i get more info!!!! like ohhhhhh that's where the children's names come from! also it took me until today that literally THREE of edward's relatives are called "cornelius hater" this is hilarious. I also didn't find the James C fleeing on horseback element in my own research and frankly? truly a mad lad this one

a couple things that i found interesting in my own search, but full disclaimer i didn't crosscheck this stuff nearly enough, so there's always the risk that it's just someone of the same name and similar enough location/dates.

The UK Poll Books and Electoral Register for 1834 lists Simon Little as owner of Fleetland Farm and a Mr. Edwards as his tenant, if i understood properly!

now the whole reason why i looked into this is blantantly to imagine more of my blorbo's life so here's stuff that made me go :'o

Edward starts as an officer on the HMS Donegal, in 1837. He's 26 yo! and his younger siblings are 22 (Charlotte), 20 (Archibald), 18 (Richard), 15 (Ridley) and just 13 for Janet! Jane Elizabeth, the eldest, is 35 for comparison.

So in the 1841 census, listed as living in the same house are both parents, Jane Elizabeth, Sarah Magdalen, Margaret Anne, Charlotte and Louisa. Like the info dump points out, none of sons are listed as living with them. What were they doing at the time?

Eldest son James Cornelius enlisted on the HMS Asia in 1828 (at 21), but by 1841 he's on the HMS Beacon as Paymaster just like dad. He also signed up for the freemasons in 1943 in malta! Very exotic

i didn't look up archibald bc i didn't know he existed at the time!

Couldn't find anything on Cornelius Hayter, Edward's closest in age brother, except birth and death dates unfortunately, and he's listed as living on Ker Street in Devonport, (same place as his family in 1941) on his burial record the very next year :(

His death was listed in april may or june of 1842 (i did find his burial records but i can't read the month listed as his death :/).

That's during Edwards' time as a lieutenant on the Vindictive (1 year 6 month and 1 day!). I found (with difficulty like damn) the following info on whatever the fuck the vindictive was up to during this time :

"[NICOLAS, JOHN TOUP (1788–1851) commanded] the Vindictive, on the East India station, from 1841 to 1844, returning to England by Tahiti, where he was sent to protect English interests during the arbitrary proceedings of the French (Ann. Reg. pt. i. p. 256)."

However Edward, who finished his posting on the Vindictive on the 20th of oct 1843, might have not seen tahiti!

[nevermind all that about the vindictive, i found a very thorough source thanks to the cold boys research center HOWEVER edward isn't nominatively mentioned as one of her officers so maybe i got his posting wrong?]

Richard John Strachan, his first little brother, is listed as living in the St Helier District General Hospital and Workhouse in the 1851 census when he's 31 yo. His family lives in the same town, so that means that he was ill enough to stay at the hospital full time.

He's listed as a "boarder" and his profession as "annuitant", which is understand as meaning that he recieves money each year, and which is the same thing several of his unmarried sisters are listed as in censuses. on that same page of the hospital census, several people are listed either as "pauper lunatic" and "pauper idiot" (compared to his "boarder") which makes think he was a long term (pure speculation) resident, but for a physical illness? i should look at the 1861 St Hélier Hospital census to see if he's still listed as a resident there, and if i don't find him, try to find his burial because i never found any death info for him, nor a naval career of any sort. mystery!

and lastly, the babiest brother Simon Ridley was a 2nd lieutenant in the royal navy but posted at the Plymouth Headquarters in 1841.

another thing of interest is that out of his 6 sisters (six!!!!), only 2 married :o

As the info dump details, Margaret Ann married a commander who later made captain. she's listed as 28 on her marriage certificate but she was actually 34 lol

and the babiest sister Janet married a commander also, at the respectable age of 51 and the guy got promoted up to vice admiral :o in 1881 when they were living with his adult son from a previous marriage, they had both a cook and housemaid! when she died at 85 yo, she left part of her effects to Alice Maud, her spinster niece (one of margaret's daughters!)

both married sisters had navy husbands, and it made me wonder how they met, like was margaret's husband serving with her older brother? or they were introduced at a navy function while her baby brother was trying to get a good commission? very jane austen

This is a little drabble I decided to write. I had a request for Jamie Hayter but there wasn’t anything else on the request so I took matters into my hands. 

Details: Jamie is a mafia boss, she’s pretty good at what she does. Aspen comes in to town and Jamie wants her. 

This is a AU imagine. I am dyslexic so there might be misspelled wrongs. Please forgive me. Give me feed back please! I am write part two if you guys would like. 

This is ridiculous.” She huffed at her men. “She was right there, ya idiots!” They looked down and the head man, Adam, stepped up. “Jamie, she had her friends with her. There were a few actually, so there was no way to get her without them jumping in.” “You were suppose to just give her the paper, you duff.” She wanted to scream. She wanted Aspen under her wing. They would make the perfect ring leaders but Aspen had her own thing going on. Somehow Aspen had gotten into the business around here, when this area was Jamie’s. She owns everything in this town. Aspen had weaseled her way into James life by trying to buy some of the area in town. No one would say yes until they talked to James of course. Jamie let her buy a small bar in town so she could keep an eye on her. Aspen was on a no hurt list. Jamie however figured she’d have to do the work herself, since no one else could do it right. Jamie decided to go out for the night, only bringing her two friends, Britt and Rebel, however her guard, Adam, refused for her to go without him. Once they pulled up to the bar, everyone there was staring. Jamie rolled her eyes and walked inside. Aspen had changed stuff around. The bar was updated, as well as the booths. The dance floor was lit up and there were people dancing, drunk enough not to pay attention to Jamie walking in. Aspen smiled and waved at them. “Welcome to my Bar, The Sip. We server the best. What can I get for you ladies?” She looked at Adam and smiled. “And gent.” Jamie was in all. This girl was everything she wanted. She was cute and kind, caring even. Jamie looked at the group and then back to Aspen. “Four beers, whatever you pick is fine.” Aspen nodded, then turned to look at the taps. Jamie started to look around again. People watching as Britt would tell her. Nothing looked like Aspen. Nothing was standing out, as was no one else. Aspen had everything Jamie wanted for sure. “Aspen, where is my money?” The group turned to the man at the end of the bar. “I told you I’ll have it. I still have a week until rent is due.” Jamie was confused. She was informed Aspen bought this place out right. Jamie let her buy it. The man had lied to her and that was a no go. She didn’t deal with liars very well. Adam looked at Jamie and was asking if she wanted him to deal with the man. She shook her head. “Aspen, I told you, I need the money now.” Aspen rolled her eyes and looked at the guy as she poured the beers. “It’s not my fault you gambled all the money away that I gave you last month. I told you to get help. I don’t have the money.” The guy grabbed Aspen by the shirt and pulled her to him over the bar. “If you don’t give me that money.” Aspen nodded and acting like she would until she grabbed the man by the back of the neck and smashed his face onto the counter. “Don’t touch me, you’ll get the money next week.” He groaned as he went to walk away. His nose was definitely broken and it was pouring blood. Jamie snickered at the man. As he got close to the door, Jamie turned to Adam. “Take him back to the house. I’ll handle him when I get back.” She whispered to him. He smiled, finished his beer, and walked out the door. They had found a booth to hang out in. Aspen walked over and placed three more beers on the table and winked as she walked away. Jamie got up and walked to the bar where Aspen was just getting back to. “Oh, did I get you the wrong beer?” Jamie smiled and shook her head. “No ma’am. I was actually going to ask for your name.” Aspens face got hot and you could tell she was flustered. “Aspen, Aspen Indigo. And you are?” “I’m Jamie. Jamie Hayter.” Aspens eyes grew as she realized who was in front of her. “Are you here to take my bar back?” Jamie shook her head. “No actually, I was informed you had bought it out right. So I’m going to make sure you have no rent left. I stick to my word when I let people buy from me, but that’s not what I wanted to talk about.” Aspen looked back at Jamie. “Rent isn’t a problem. I make more than enough.” Jamie shook her head. “Then you’ll put that money up into savings. You’re not gonna feed that man’s habit anymore. Promise.” Aspen smiled. “Thank you.” Jamie grabbed Aspens hand and held her pinky out and put it around Aspens pinky. “You can thank me by letting me take you out. On a date. Tomorrow, if you’re free.” Aspen grew even more red and nodded. “I’d love that.” Jamie kissed Aspens pinky. “I’ll pick you up at 8.” Jamie said as she walked back to the booth.
