Greece is the Word
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford, Wednesday 28th June 2023 Greece-on-Sea makes more sense as a setting for Shakespeare’s Dream, than for Mamma Mia, and with the added period touch (it’s the 1930s) the stage is set for an atmospheric, evocative show.  Actor-musicians add to the mood, and there’s a lengthy dumb show sequence, an overture to set the scene and to transport us…

Here is a Background Character Appreciation Post!!
We all wanted to see Penelope have suitors this season. Some were interesting, to say the least, but all of them must have some stories!! I wanted to share some of their names.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lord Garret is played by: Jonathan Livingstone
Lord Barnell is played by: Martin Sarreal
Lord Leiber is played by: Joshua Akehurst
My personal favorites:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lord Basilio: James Bradwell
Lord Remington: Zak Ford-Williams
Of course, the Lord Squad. These men were mostly for Colin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lord Fife: Bert Seymore
Lord Cho: Caleb Obediah
We do see these Stanton and Wilding snub Penelope and are well aware of Colin helping her in the marriage market. Part of me wonders if these men never went after Penelope because they could see that Colin was close to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lord Stanton: Jorden Myrie
Lord Wilding: Joe Barnes
I hope you all enjoy these characters and if you want to make backstories for them go ahead! 💕
@colinfeatherington I hope this helps!! 💕

E.P.W. Packard... and Susan B. Anthony?: A connection on paper
As you may remember (or not), back in January 2018, I first wrote about my ancestor, E.P.W. Packard, otherwise known as Elizabeth Parsons Ware Packard, a person who crusaded against mental asylums across the country, leading to the creation of "Packard Laws" to limit their use. I wrote about her again in June 2018, March 2019, March 2019, and August 2019, among other posts. I'd recommend reading all four of those posts. Anyway, I recently came across a page in the diaries of Susan B. Anthony, where she mentions Elizabeth! In a diary entry on May 28, 1870, she writes that she talked to Elizabeth, saying that "she has been in insane asylum for years, because of unbelief in Orthodoxy," with her husband a minister. [1] Sadly, that's it.
Tumblr media
However, this connection is even more profound, as it means that Elizabeth had direct ties to the women's rights movement, especially the struggle for suffrage for women, as Anthony has founded the National Woman Suffrage Association only one year prior in 1869. Does this mean that Elizabeth was on the front lines of that movement? Of that, I'm not sure, but it definitely gives another avenue for future research, to be sure.
It is interesting that in 1860, when Elizabeth was imprisoned, Anthony was visiting Lydia Mott, her friend, in Albany, New York, and later dedicated herself to helping a woman named Phoebe Phelps. We also know that E.P.W. seems to have distanced herself from the movement, as she was compelled to curry public opinion in order to convince male legislators to vote in her favor, moving forward her objectives, and felt closer to James Bradwell, who was a moderate, than Anthony, who was more "radical." [2] She later had to rent out part of her house as a result of the Chicago Fire destroying a printing press which had her name plates for books.
Ultimately, E.P.W. did not follow what Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Anthony had done in the past: linking abuses in mental asylums to "laws disadvantaging women." [3]

Myra Bradwell (February 12, 1831 – February 14, 1894) made history in 1870, when she attempted to become the first woman in the state of Illinois to practice law. Even though she was denied, her activism paved the way for anti-discrimination laws that allowed countless women to enter the workforce in a variety of fields.
She was motivated to study the profession after she married the lawyer James Bradwell and started working as an apprentice in his office. In 1868 she founded the newspaper Chicago Legal News, which had a column dedicated to women’s issues. Even if her attempts to be admitted to the bar were initially unsuccessful, her efforts directly led to the passing of a law that forbade gender discrimination in all areas except the military. She was eventually awarded her license to practise in 1892.

The northwest view is still a picturesque delight, with its hillsides and valleys, the green fields, and high hedgerows of Staffordshire. Strangers and pilgrims who have left the district, now and then silently stray to an elevation to have a refreshing glance at this scenery before they again return to their distant homes and lands, and leave behind them a farewell sigh for that " which once hath been." William Scarratt, 1906.
Rising from the hectic Chatterley Valley to Bradwell Woods, which as far as I can see have never been built on (the fine carpet of bluebells we’re looking forward to indicates ancient woodland).
(January 2021 and (7) May 2018, (9) November 2017).
The valley is cut through by the Trent and Mersey Canal, designed by James Brindley, the first sod of which was cut nearby by Josiah Wedgwood, to carry Potteries wares to Liverpool and the sea. The canal was finished in 1777 and a remote corner of rural Staffordshire with poor soils and worse transport suddenly became an industrial behemoth, a process about which may local authors wrote.
They were joined by the railway in 1848 (now Grade II listed, Longport station is still in use and I often ride it when I travel between volunteering at Westport Lake and my day job, in Crewe).
Many of the factories Wedgwood and Brindley knew, expanded by Scarratt’s day, are now gone, but (4) H & R Johnson (founded in 1901 and in this area since 1968) remains.
Industrial history is remembered by the Golden Statue, built in Nottingham to a design by Wolfgang Buttress and here since 2015, remembering the business of the valley.
In 1903, Charles Shaw rued that "This lovely, peaceful, and fruitful valley is now choked with smoke and disfigured by mining and smelting refuse." and one can still see his point, but the woods are still proudly untouched.
Although the railway he complained about is still there, joined by the A500 road (started in 1962 and not fully finished in 2006- I remember the traffic jams caused by the last bout of work in ‘06), and littering has become an issue, it's still the case that in the woods this area has regained a lot of what Shaw recalled from his childhood in the 1830s and one can breathe again.

Exhibit Highlight!
We’ve got a new exhibit open on the second floor of the library! Exhibits are open for viewing for Knox College faculty, staff, and students. If you are interested in further content from the exhibit, please contact us at [email protected]
Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence with Highlights of Local Suffragettes and Supporters
In 1919, Illinois became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment. The ratification made it illegal to deny an individual the right to vote based on sex. By August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment became fully certified after years of persistence. Although, the struggle for suffrage continued far beyond 1920 with many individuals (particularly indigenous communities and people of color) being suppressed from and targeted for voting.
The 44th Annual Convention for the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association took place in Galesburg, IL on October 02, 1912. The single known image from this event exists at the Galesburg Public Library.  We hope that the associated documents and individuals featured in this exhibit will bring a larger awareness of the local individuals involved in the fight for women’s suffrage, and the many that continue to be left out.
This exhibited items from Special Collections are in addition to the poster exhibition from the Smithsonian Institute, Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence, which offers a national context for the process to the 19th amendment.
Suffragettes and supporters included are:
Ethel Edgerton Hurd, Knox class of 1865
Delia Sheldon Jackson, Knox class of 1887
Hettie Linsley Thompson, Knox class of 1887
Ella Park Lawrence, Knox 1878  Honorary Degree
Fannie Hicks Givens, Knox Class of 1892
Ida Little Pifer
Harriet B. Arnold, Knox class of 1906
Maria Bowen, Knox class of 1922

My SlideShare presentation with more about Myra Bradwell is available on-line: https://www.slideshare.net/GeorgiannBaldino/bradwell
"While [her husband] James Bradwell served in the Illinois state legislature, Myra Bradwell often drafted legislation that he ushered into law, including a statute that gave all people, men and women, the right to practice any profession. Some of the bills she drafted gave women the right to run for office in the Illinois public school system, to become notaries public, and gave women equal rights to the custody of their children in case of divorce." It has been at least five years since I have been out this way and I was looking forward to reacquainting myself with the area. The two large buildings of the (decommissioned) power station looked very different in the light today compared to last week at Goldhanger, but they make a very imposing placemark, navigation aid, on the landscape in any weather. At Bradwell Riverside there were four people looking out to sea, pointing and talking, and they all became very animated and started shouting when a man on ride on lawnmower drove in to something. Other than that, it was very quiet and I set out along the sea wall towards the power station, glad to have brought a scarf and gloves as the wind was brisk and crisp. I set up near the Down Hall Farm Sluice, a short way from where Baker has a point marked on one of his maps (University of Essex Archive Ref:C3), opposite Pewet Island and next to the channel separating it from the mainland. There were several wading birds on the island and a couple of cormorants drying themselves in the cold breeze. I did remember to bring some binoculars, which were lent to me by painter Ruth Philo. They were her father’s, originally bought in the 1960’s, so a slight connection to Baker’s time. I have seen his selection of optics in the University Archive, and even looked through his binoculars, even if only out of the university window. Ruth’s will certainly make a difference to spotting and identifying birds out in the landscape and I was even able to get a closer look at the Radio Caroline ship out in the estuary. I saw several Common Gulls, Brent Geese and Cormorants and also heard a pheasant and the aforementioned lawnmower running over something, which seemed to be par for the course given his previous. I was a bit restless, knowing I was meeting someone soon, and couldn’t really settle in to the location as I had the week before, so I might rethink how I approach the days where I am walking with someone. But as the hour progressed the wind seemed to become more insistent and the tide continued to receed revealing more of Pewet Island. A couple of withies stick out from the mud, a wonky vertical to the horizontal of the water, sea wall and horizon. I found it frustrating not to be able to identify the different wading birds … more work needs to be done here. The time counted down slowly, with every gust. At 58 minutes, my mobile phone rang (but was on silent mode, naturally), it was one of the artists I was going to meet but I let it ring off as even though I was 30 feet away I didn’t want to record myself. On the hour I stopped recording and phoned him back, and agreed to meet at the junction of the two footpaths by the power station. It was good to see James Ravinet and Warren Harper as I had only seen them occasionally since moving north over a year ago, and I also wanted to talk to them about their work around Bradwell and on the Dengie peninsula, much of it being on their Institute for the Recognition of Peripheral Interests site. Whilst we were chatting Warren saw a bird of prey hovering about 15 feet above the sea wall, but it flew away across the field before we could look at it through our binoculars. It was exciting to know that there were birds of prey out here, especially as I had seen a tweet a few weeks ago about Peregrines nesting on top of the power station buildings. A few minutes later he spotted two birds of prey flying above the reactor buildings. They were gliding into the wind in order to hover in a reasonably stable position relative to the ground, which gave us time to look at them through the binoculars and positively identify them as Peregrine Falcons! I specifically looked at one falcon and could clearly see its ‘badger’ like markings, as described by Baker, meaning that this was the tiercel (male), and the other the falcon. As it turned slightly in the wind I could see the outline of its shape was also what I had recognised from other photographs…what a great moment! It was at this point that the security cameras on the power station that had been watching us standing and chatting started to flash at us, as if they thought we were looking at them through the binoculars, so we gave them a wave and started to walk off along the sea wall. A local man walking his dog, the first of today, approached us on the beach to ask what we were doing. ‘Are you surveying the sound?’ he said. He seemed disappointed when I said I was recording birds, and said that he saw peregrines all of the time as if they sparrows. Interestingly for James and Warren he’d worked at the power station when it was operational so we had a bit of a chat before his dog instructed him it wanted to go for a run. With a combination of the relentless cold south east wind in our faces, and breathing in chemicals being sprayed onto a nearby field, we decided to leave the beach and head back to their car, looking at all of the power station defences, whilst the cameras followed us too.

“A Sad Revelation”: The Insanity Trial of Mary Todd Lincoln
On May 19, 1875, Mary Todd Lincoln was arrested and tried for lunacy before a jury of twelve men in the Cook County Court in Chicago. The charge had been filed by her son, Robert Todd Lincoln, and the State of Illinois required a civil trial to rule on the issue. The Court agreed that the president’s widow was “an insane person.” So on May 20th, Robert escorted his mother to Bellevue Place, a private sanitarium in Batavia, Illinois, run by Dr. Richard J. Patterson. There she was to be comfortably confined and treated for insanity. She would remain at Bellevue Place until she successfully engineered her own release on September 10, 1875.
Tumblr media
The story of Mary Todd Lincoln’s insanity trial and commitment is revealed in the unique collection of documents contained in the Insanity File Collection held by the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection. The documents offer very personal glimpses of concerns about Mary’s increasingly bizarre behavior after Tad’s death in 1871 and about the actions her family took.
In early May 1875 Robert, increasingly worried and embarrassed by his mother’s behavior, sought professional medical opinions on her sanity. Dr. Patterson summed up the conclusions of the doctors in this May 18th letter to Robert’s lawyers. Patterson noted, “I know nothing of Mrs. Lincoln’s mental condition, excepting from facts such as stated to me and other medical gentlemen, at the conference at your office on the 15th inst.” Still, he concluded, “From the facts disclosed at your office…, it is my opinion that Mrs. Lincoln is insane….or in the language of the Statute, that she is a fit person to be sent to the State Hospital for the Insane.”
Tumblr media
On May 19th Robert followed the advice of the doctors and his lawyers and filed an “Application to Try the Question of Insanity” in the Cook County Court in Chicago. The case was prosecuted by family friend Leonard Swett, who arrived with a police officer unannounced at Mary’s hotel and escorted her to court. A series of medical and other witnesses testified to Mary’s strange behavior; Robert testified that he believed his mother to be insane. Mary did not testify. Her lawyer offered little defense and called no witnesses. After ten minutes of deliberation, the jury reached its verdict “declaring Mary Todd Lincoln an Insane Person” and the Court issued a “Proceedings and Order Declaring Mary Todd Lincoln an Insane Person.” A further proceeding made Robert conservator of her estate.
Tumblr media
Headlines in the Chicago newspapers topped lengthy articles telling the story of the “Sad Revelation” and Mary’s “Clouded Reason.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary’s “Insanity Freaks”—her half-hearted attempt to poison herself after the trial and her confinement to Bellevue Place on May 20th—also received attention in the press.
Tumblr media
Robert received support from friends and advisors like David Davis, who sent the young man a letter of encouragement on May 23rd. Davis wrote, “It is a source of deep thankfulness, that the matter passed off so well. The terrible strain on you will now be removed & you can go to work. Some good comes out of almost every thing. & the necessity of confining yr mother in an asylum will go very far towards removing the unfavorable impressions created by her conduct since yr fathers death.”
Tumblr media
Mary, of course, was furious with Robert and humiliated by her status as “an insane person.” Almost immediately after her arrival at Bellevue Place, she began a secretive campaign to prove her sanity and to be released to live with her sister, Elizabeth Todd Edwards, in Springfield. She enlisted the help of the Chicago newspapers and her friends Judge James B. and Myra Bradwell. Robert and Dr. Patterson did what they could to end such “interference” in Mary’s treatment, but by August the tide had turned in Mary’s favor.
Tumblr media
Myra Bradwell appealed directly to Elizabeth, who at first insisted she could not care for her sister and apologized to Robert for her “improper interference.” But a visit from Myra Bradwell carrying a letter from Mary convinced Elizabeth that, as she wrote to Robert on August 15th, “It may be that a refusal, to yield to her wishes, at this crisis, will greatly increase her disorder….I now say, that if you will bring her down, feeling perfectly willing, to make the experiment - I promise to do all in my power, for her comfort and recovery.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Around the same time, the Bradwells enabled a reporter for the Chicago Times to interview Mary. He reported that after speaking to Mary, he “departed thoroughly convinced that whatever condition of mind Mrs. Lincoln may have been in previously, she is unquestionably compos mentis now, and ought not to be deprived of her liberty.”
Tumblr media
Ultimately, Robert had no alternative. On September 10, 1875, Mary was released from Bellevue Place, and the next day Robert accompanied her to Springfield. Five days later, Elizabeth reported to Robert, “A number of our friends have called and are delighted to see your Mother looking so well, and in every respect acting in the most agreeable manner….[She] seems to heartily enjoy herself. I will certainly indulge the hope, that ere long, every one will be thoroughly convinced of her entire recovery.”
Tumblr media
At a second hearing in the Cook County Court on June 15, 1876, a jury considered Mary’s petition to end Robert’s conservatorship and ruled that “Mary Lincoln is restored to reason and is capable to manage and control her estate.” The Chicago newspapers reported the “Happy Denouement.”
