I was rewatching Jake Long: American Dragon and i noticed that, in comparison to Danny Phantom, the series allows characters to have more dimension. For example: Trixie and Spud, who are Jake’s friends, have a life and development outside Jake. They aren’t just sidekicks. Sometimes there are just there doing their own thing while Jake is busy with his dragon duties. Trixie is just a friend of Jake, unlike Sam Manson in DP who is.. more defined by her crush on Danny and whatever he pays attention to her or not.
In addition to this, Jake’s family is... a lot for more supportive than Danny’s? They aren’t constanly endangering their kids like the Fentons do. Sure, they aren’t perfect but they are more available than Maddie and Jack are from my impression. It helps that Jake has his grandfather who guides him with his dragon powers. Jake’s friends are more supportive overall as well. In contrast to DP, there are times Sam came off as a bit toxic to Danny to be honest? Tucker is fine in that area though.

Day 23: No, You Won't Understand, Ever
Prompt number: Prompt #23
Fandom: American Dragon Jake Long
Pairings/Characters: Jake/Rose; Lao Shi
Rating: T
Warnings: death mentions; violence mentions
You can read under the cut or click here to read it on fanfiction
“What did you do?”
Jake tried not to sound completely angry about it but he couldn’t keep the heat from his voice as he met his grandfather on the roof of Gramps’ shop. It was a scene that could have taken place a million times and likely had but Jake had never hated his grandfather more than he had tonight.
                “Do?”
“Don’t play innocent,” Jake said, not letting his dragon form drop as he paced the roof. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
Standing near the centre of the roof in his small, forever dignified human form, Gramps folded his hands into his sleeves and stared evenly at Jake.
“I do not know what you mean.”
All Jake could think about was throwing his grandfather off the roof, no matter that Gramps would probably catch himself before he hit the ground. It would make Jake feel better.
                “Where,” Jake growled, “is Rose?”
Gramps’ face was impressively blank, although his eyebrows rose slightly. “Ah. That.”
                That?
                That?
                THAT!?
Jake was so stunned by Gramps’ nonchalance that he stopped pacing and faced his grandfather, his mouth hanging open. The memories cascaded through Jake, the way that Rose laughed, every promise they had made about growing old together even though they were only seventeen, the first time that he had seen her face. Rose wasn’t that. Rose was the love of his life.
“Where is she?” Jake asked, not liking the way that Gramps would no longer look directly at him, instead staring off to the side.
“Jake, this nonsense had gone on long enough. Neither of you were interested in seeing sense and I wasn’t about to let this continue any longer.”
                “What? What nonsense?”
“You cannot be dating your mortal enemy! I have told you time and time again that this was not going to end well and that it could not be allowed to end well.”
“She doesn’t want to be my enemy! She doesn’t want to be in the Huntsclan. Fu has been trying to help me research ways to get her out! You should be on my side too!”
Jake was trembling now and he wasn’t sure if it was from fear or rage.
“Jake, I know that you think this thing is love between the two of you –”
                “Because it is.”
“And I know how hard it is to let go of someone who is your first love but you have to. You are more than just Jacob Long, do you understand? You are the very first American Dragon. You are a legacy. You are duty and honour and everything that is right with the world. She would see our world dead and slaughtered at your feet. You cannot be together and I have tried to explain that to the both of you but neither of you would hear it.”
“You are calling Rose and the Huntsclan the same thing,” Jake argued. “She is different and after all of these years you should have cared enough to know her better. If you would open your eyes and actually get to know her, you would see everything that she has done for us. For me. She loves me too, Gramps, the same way that I love her. Why won’t you see that?”
“I see things you don’t!” Gramps shouted, his cheeks turning red as his temper flared. “I know you think you understand the world but you are just a child! You need to trust me. You need to trust that I understand the things you can’t!”
“No, you won’t understand, ever,” Jake snapped. “You just proved that! You don’t care about me, or my heart, or what is actually right and honourable. You’re afraid to fight for something real. You’re afraid of the Dragon Council finding out that the Huntsclan has a double agent working for us. You’re afraid to find out that I was right all along about her because you were too blind to see it. You’re afraid that you don’t understand and you should be because you are wrong. About her, about me, about what our future is.”
Jake stalked toward Gramps but Gramps didn’t flinch or even transform. Gramps was breathing heavily and still wouldn’t look Jake in the eye but he made no effort to move.
“Now, tell me, where is Rose? What did you do?”
“You needed to be apart,” Gramps repeated. “You couldn’t be together.”
“What did you do!?” Jake shouted, ready to pick Gramps up and shake him, no matter what fight would ensue. Jake knew he was stronger than the old man now and he wasn’t afraid to fight for Rose.
“The Huntsman was very interested to know about her extracurricular activities,” Gramps said evenly.
This time, Jake couldn’t control himself and he shoved his grandfather as hard as he could. Lao Shi transformed mid-tumble, his blue dragon form rising up to finally look Jake in the eye.
“So, to punish me for falling in love, you went and worked with the Huntsman?” Jake growled through gritted teeth. “After all that about loyalty and honour, you are the one who actually cooperated with our enemies?”
“It was the only way to save you!”
“You killed her!” Jake grabbed his grandfather by the shoulders, locking them together. “You understand that, right? She’s dead!”
Jake was openly sobbing but Gramps didn’t even try to look ashamed.
“It’s what was best for you.”
“No, it was what you wanted.”
“When you are older, you will understand,” Gramps said confidently. “I know it does not feel like that now but you will. I know it.”
“If I ever understand what it is like to be a monster, I’ll kill myself before taking anyone else down with me,” Jake swore, his voice shaking. “I hope one day you understand what you’ve done.”
Jake could have stayed. He could have fought Gramps on that roof and he could have won and they both know it. Jake didn’t want to do that. Hurting Gramps would just make Gramps feel like he was right for doing what he did because look at what a bad influence Rose had been on Jake and, honestly, Jake was too disgusted to keep looking his grandfather in the face. He pushed Gramps away from him and then he took to the air, not sure where he was going, just knowing that he had to be alone.
In a world without Rose, Jake knew that he was going to be alone forever.

American Dragon: Jake Long retro-review
Tumblr media
American Dragon: Jake Long is a series that was created by Jeff Goode. The series aired on Disney Channel from January 21, 2005 to September 1, 2007. It has 52 episodes (22 minutes each, a few divided by two 11 minutes segments). The first season consists of 21 episodes. The second season has 31 episodes. The series also had a crossover episode with Lilo and Stitch The Series called  "Morpholomew".
Show premise
American Dragon:Jake Long is about a 13 year old Chinese-American boy named Jake Long who plays the role of protector for all magical creatures in United States. He is able transform into a dragon when he pleases, a power he inherited from his maternal side of the family. Guided by grandfather, Luong Lao Shi, Jakes tries to balance his life between being a regular teenager and dragon magical protector, something that it isn’t always as easy as it sounds.
Plot and structure
One thing that made this series stand out from other shows of its era was that there was a bigger storyline that developed through the seasons. Every 4-5 episodes there were events that changed the status quo or continued the story. Characters developed and were explored in different ways throughout the series too.
Season 1 is more episodic with the episodes often acting as standalone stories rather than adding to the bigger narrative. Every 4 episodes or so the main arc is explored or new lore is revealed. Despite of this, the stories still remained to fun. There is still character development and things that are set up for Season 2 arcs.  There are a few episodes that are divided in two 11 minutes segments for some reason. My only guess is that they were still experimenting with the format and seeing which one worked better for the show.
In Season 2 the writing and direction overall changes notably. There is a lot more emphasis in the main story arcs and there are some subplots in between as well, keeping the show more enganging. The series’ tone becomes more darker while maintaining the humor from the first season in character development episodes. In my opinion, this season has a good balance between ¨plot episodes¨ and ¨character episodes¨. For every 2-3 ¨character episodes¨ there is one ¨plot episode¨. That way it doesn’t feel it is going too slow or too rushed. Season 1 had less continuity when compared to Season 2. In addition to this, there is more emotional depth in the stories. As i was rewatching the series, i felt like the characters were given a lot more dimension to them. Their issues became more personal. Some episodes were dedicated to explore how they felt about certain important event and how they dealt with it.
If there is one complain i have of this season is that after the episode ¨Homecoming¨ the main story looses it focus and there isn’t more proper set up for the other main arc. This could be traced back to the fact that these two main stories were supposed to be in two different seasons and the team felt forced to writer them all in one long season in case the show got cancelled.
Another issue is that some important plot episodes like  "Homecoming" and  "The Hong Kong Longs" should have been 44 minute episodes to cover all the things that happen in them. Because they only last 22 minutes, this makes the events feel very rushed, specially in "The Hong Kong Longs" it ruins important character beats.
Characters and arcs
While i talked about how American Dragon has a big plot, the core of the series is its characters and their relationships. The main focus of the show is Jake trying to balance his teenager daily life with his guardian dragon duties. This means most episode conflicts center around him learning things or developing in some way.
The main cast consist in:
Jake Long: The main protagonist and star of the show
Luong Lao Shi: Jake’s grandfather and teacher. He used to be the Chinese Dragon when he was younger and is able to transform in a dragon just like Jake.
Fu Dog: A 600 year old magical talking dog that helps Lao and Jake in their missions.
Trixie Carter: One of Jake’s best friends. She earlier learns about his dragon identity and helps him in many missions.
Arthur P. "Spud" Spudinski: The other Jake’s best friend. He learns about Jake’s dragon identity at same time as Trixie and helps him in many missions.
Haley Kay Long: Jake’s little sister. She is a child prodigy and she is able to use her dragon powers yet not as powerful as Jake’s.
Susan Luong-Long: Jake and Haley’s mother and Lao Shi’s dauther. The dragon powers skipped her generation.
Jonathan Long: Jake and Haley’s father. He is a normal human and he doesn’t know anything about the existence of magical creatures, including Jake and Haley’s dragon powers.
Rose/Huntsgirl: A popular girl that Jake has a crush on. Very early in the series it is revealed that she works for the main antagonists, the Huntsclan. Over time she develops feelings for Jake and eventually learns about his dragon identity. This leads her to change her ways and help Jake with stopping the Huntsclan.
Main antagonists:
The Huntsclan: A fanatic cult like human group who is always hunting magical creatures and becomes a bigger treat as the plot advances. In plenty of episodes, Jake and other dragons’s role is to protect the magical creatures from the Huntsclan  They are lead by the the Huntsman, who serves as master figure for Rose. The Dark Dragon: Not much is known about him except that he is a dragon that once turned evil centuries ago. He is a powerful dragon and his human identity is never revealed in the series. He appears less often than the Huntsclan but he is still a very dangerous adversary.
As you can see, the series has a big cast. This doesn’t mention all the secondary characters there are in the show, which often new get introduced every 2-3 episodes.
Most of the episodes focus in exploring or developing Jake in someway. Jake is a very flawed protagonist who usually can be selfish and act without thinking. In the first episodes he has the habit of abusing his dragon powers to ¨cheat¨ through life and this ends up getting him in trouble. His huge ego is a facade he uses to hide his insecurities, which he learns to overcome over time. Despite his attitude problems, he always tries helping magical creatures in need and really cares about his family and friends. He takes pride in being a magical protector, a role that is important to him.
Tumblr media
He also has a very complicated relationship with Rose. At the start of the series he falls in love with her without knowing that she works for the Huntsclan. The same applies to Rose, with her not knowing that Jake is also his mortal enemy. Over time they learn each other’s secret identity and Rose decides to help Jake with stopping the Huntsclan. Their relationship is one of the things that is constanly changing in almost every episode when the plot is about them and its one of the best written parts of the show. Usually there is a problem with how animated shows potray teenage romance but with Jake and Rose’s case is executed very well. What’s more, it a good example of how to do enemies to lovers right and the complications that cause to the characters involved.
If there is one problem i have about their dynamic is that i wish Rose could have had episodes or more scenes exploring her character without Jake having to be in it. I think the series does a decent job at establishing that Rose has a life outside Jake. However, more scenes developing how she feels or her story would have helped her character overall. For example: An episode about how she was raised in the Huntsclan.
Moving on to the rest of the cast, i think the series does a good job a developing most of them. They get their own episodes and side plots showing different sides of their personality and lives. One thing i appreciate about the show is that it has episodes in which the main focus isn’t on Jake but other characters. This helps giving the show more variety and developing these characters. For instance: One of my favourite episodes from Season 1 "Keeping Shop" involves Trixie and Spud taking charge of Jake’s dragon duties while he and his grandfather are busy elsewhere. Fu takes the role of master here and teaches Trixie and Spud how to use dragon powers with a enchanted dragon disguise.
There are episodes that develop Jake’s relationship with his family too. Most of them are great and have sweet moments. Jake has a good chemistry with every member of his family and, because of this, an episode can have a different ¨feel¨ to it depending on the relationship that is being developed.
American Dragon has tons of secondary characters. Some are more memorable than others depending on their story and their evolution. Some are funny while others are more interesting. It’s quite impressive how the writers were able to introduce new every 2-3 episodes and still managed to make it work.
However, in spite of having all these positive things, there are some problems. For starters, not all characters get the same level of development. Trixie is one character i believe that it should have had more than one episode about her perspective. Maybe having to choose between a career she likes and her parents career. Or her romantic relationship with Kyle.
Jake has a few episodes of him learning lessons that he already learned more than one time. Part of this can be excused because it this is a show from the earlier 2000′s and continuity was harder to execute back in those days. The biggest offender of this is  "Game On", an episode that would fit well in Season 1 or early Season 2. Not near the end of the series when Jake has grown past this lesson.
On last point, some secondary characters feel that they have potential was never given proper time to be explored. For instance, Nigel Thrall is set up to be a foil and friendly rival to Jake in his debut episode...to barely do anything with him. I think this comes from the writers trying to put to major plot threads that were supposed to be in two seasons and not in one. This likely lead to some concepts to not be given proper continuation.
These flaws can be a bit frustrating but they didn’t take my enjoyment out of the show. I think that as long as one keeps in mind that this is an old show and the problems it had during its production, it is fun to watch.
On lore and worldbuilding
I think one of the aspects that kept me enganged during my rewatch was how each episode would introduce some new element about the magical world and how it works. It’s actually intriguing. Every magical creature has its own powers, culture and society. This helped the series with not making it feel repetitive and always have something new to be interested in. I really like how the show team didn’t limit themselves to have two or three types of magical creatures and instead did a little bit of everything. It gives off the impression that the magical world is as big, if not bigger, than the human world. The series often uses dragon lore to represent certain themes such as the changes Jake goes through with his powers as a metaphor for puberty.
Gerenal animation and sound aspect.
For most part the animation looks solid. It’s nothing amazing but it works well for an action adventure show. Some action sequences are entertaining to watch. The characters have fun expressions.
Tumblr media
(Jake and Lao’s dragon form designs in Season 2 art style) If there is one aspect American Dragon is controversial for is the the huge change in art direction in Season 2. Most of the characters got a new design, the art style changed to a angular simplified one. Some magical creatures looked like different species from the ones of Season 1. I personally prefer the art style of Season 1. It has a cartoonish vibes to it. It’s more pleasant to see and it fits better the tone of the show. I don’t dislike Season 2 style, in fact, i got used to it rather quickly. My main issue is that it feels more ¨stiff¨ and less expressive the Season 1 artstyle.
As for the voice cast, it’s pretty good. There are some well known voice actors here such as: Dante Basco ( Jake Long), John DiMaggio (Fu Dog), Mae Whitman (Rose). Although there are maybe some secondary characters that didn’t have the best choice and aren’t that good, the main cast does have solid voice actors to make up for that.
On the soundtrack, it is okay from what i heard. It improves in Season 2, probably because there is better direction in that season. They music has a bigger emotional impact to it than it had in the first season.
Representation stuff
I don’t feel like i’m the best to fully judge this aspect of the series. There are some things that haven’t aged well, being a series of 2000′s. There are some innapropiate jokes that wouldn’t be get a pass nowadays and a few writing choices in a few episodes that are rather... questionable.
Something i appreciate about the series is how Jake is mixed race ( chinese-european). His mother and grandfather are chinese and his sister is mixed race. His father is white/european. They all get their own episodes to get developed. There some episodes that explore Jake’s chinese part of the family such as when he visits them in  "Feeding Frenzy" or when Lao teaches Jake about their culture.
One of my favourite episodes.  "Year of the Jake", is about Jake learning to be more involved with his chinese heritage and see to the value in it when he makes the mistake of cleaning the ¨good luck¨ out of his granfather’s shop. The episode takes place during Chinese New Year inuniverse. There are some scenes of the rest of Jake’s family participating in the parade, which is pretty cool.
The female characters in this show are able to stand on their own ground and are treated as their own person. I like the writing choice of not making Trixie Jake’s girlfriend and instead Jake having a crush in other characters. (Mainly Rose). I do wish that Rose had a few episodes about her without Jake having to be in it. Maybe some interactions with Trixie or Hayley, for example. I like her character but i feel like she could have had more screen time for her own.
About the episode order
In a minor note, American Dragon had its episodes airing out of order for some reason. This lead to errors in continuity if they are not watched in the proper order. Things that should have happened took place later, episodes that were supposed to take place before an specific plot point aired later.
Luckily some fans have found the correct watching order, which was very useful for me during my rewatch. This changes quite a lot the pacing of the series too. If any of you ever considers watching this series, i highly suggest using the episode guide to avoid continuity errors and confusion.
In conclusion
American Dragon: Jake Long is a fun series that has aged quite well despite all the years that have passed since it finished airing. It has good charcater arcs, interesting worldbuilding and solid story arcs. It’s capable of having emotional and dark moments without fully loosing the tone that was previously established.
While Season 1 is more episodic, i recommend watching all the episodes for the characters dynamics and development that becomes important in Season 2. Season 2 improves a lot in writing and direction. Most of the episodes are worth of watching since they add things to the characters or the overall story.
After finishing my rewatch, i think it has become one of my favourites Disney shows from that era. It’s not perfect, but it still manages to be an entertaining show.

I just need to rant about some stuff here. I need to get some thoughts off my chest. It's ass o'clock in the morning and I haven't slept because I keep thinking. This isn't going to be as coherent as it could be, it's messy and rushed and stream-of-consciousness, but if I stop to think about making this something perfect and widely acceptable I'll never end up writing it.
My skin is white but my heritage is not, and I often worry that people will get upset at me for creating Chinese characters with any skin tone other than white.
But why?
I know I'm borderline white-passing, but my dad isn't. He never talks about stuff unless [backstory] so I can't be sure, but being both Chinese and brown isn't something we see regularly in media today, much less fifty years ago. Nobody acknowledges this. I feel like I have a creative duty to make characters my dad can relate to, because nobody else will. (Generic statement, don't get at me over the nuance of representation by online creators, I know.)
It's hard to be in Western fandoms for Chinese media, too. Generally anything East Asian because dear lord. The layers of racism are strong. I stopped interacting so much with Hoyoverse game fandoms primarily because they practically enjoy getting riled up over how it's okay for a Chinese company to just not have brown or black people in their games (it's not).
Just because I inherited a sliver of privilege thanks to the color of my skin doesn't mean I should just give up because I'm scared people are going to point at it and tell me I'm not allowed to do this. What if my genetics had flipped a coin and landed on the other side? What if it happened to my siblings? I hate to say it but we are, in some twisted capacity, lucky that we have skin no darker than a particularly zealous tan.
We are lucky, because there were light-skinned Asian characters (stereotypical though they were) on TV and in games. I could point at American Dragon Jake Long and say "look, that is me, he looks just like me." If I had taken after my dad by more than 80% I would not have been able to say that. I had to point at Jackie Chan Adventures and go "that's kind of my dad... but... not really?" because there was nobody who looked like him.
Yeah, sure, super popular white powder makeup for perfectly white skin and whatever. I don't care. Shut the fuck up. These are still real people who live and breathe today. You cannot dismiss their experiences or lack thereof by going "yeah, well, your culture always wanted you to be white, anyway" because that is still racist.
Maybe it's because I've gotten older and more jaded, but the world isn't getting better any faster. There is still so much hatred and racism out there specifically aimed at Asians that nobody bats an eye at. One of my siblings was called out to by a trusted adult as "Covid" just out in public in front of other people; if we were not in an area with as large a population (still relatively small) of East Asian heritage, it would have been laughed off.
I haven't ever really posted publicly about any of these Chinese characters I've made yet, because I am worried. I am not as immersed in part of my culture as I would have liked to be, but I can't help thinking that it may have been a mercy in the time I was growing up in, and that my dad has only ever been so distant because he was protecting himself. (That may be too optimistic, but I can hope.) I still want to make these characters, because if the genetic lottery had landed on a different slot, I would have been making them anyway.
Maybe I really am making them for my dad. Maybe I'm making them for myself in search of a culture I was denied. Maybe I'm making them for the life we could have lived. Maybe I'm making them for everyone else. My cousins, their children, their friends. People I'll never meet.
It's a good thing there's so much representation, but everyone always forgets the other half. And it's usually the other half with darker skin.

Bonny looks at the entire fiefdom, Echo Creeks on top of the hill with Keith, a member of the Guardians of the Supernatural. A frown forms on her face.
“No. We have an alternative. We’re going to create a program for the villagers to teach them how to train and take care of the dragon, once we gain the dragon’s trust and teach the dragon to have an attachment to the people in the villages and learning about the humanity,” Keith explained. “I am currently in the process of organizing and execute this program because it is my idea. All I have to do is get Antoine and Nebula’s confirmation.”
The fairytale character looks at the monster tamer wondering if he is nuts. Making a dragon whose terrorizes the villagers, to be on their side.
“Why are you doing this?” Bonny asked the monster tamer. “Keeping the dragons alive. Preserving magic?”
Keith is silence looking at the daughter of two knights and the adopted granddaughter of The Current Red Queen from Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. He doesn’t know what the habitat of the dragons is like in Wonderland or in the Fairytale World, but he knows that dragons are seen as ‘evil’ creatures whose purpose is to terrorize a kingdom and kidnap a princess and that the dragon needs to be slain by a hero for a happy fairytale ending. He honestly doesn’t like that concept in fairytale stories.
“It feels right for me because I love the supernatural world and the creatures living in it, and because…”
Protecting the dragons, both on Earth-ni and a dimension calls The Planet of The Dragons, from Chase Young and The Heylin is the second most important duty of being a Xiaolin Dragons. It is the biggest factor to this Human vs. Dragon Conflict. The number one priority as a Xiaolin Monks is to protect the world from evil and keeping yin and yang in the universe in balance. That was why Candy is trained from a young age to master her elemental affinity, water, and learning to keep historical records (an important task as a monk). Candy explained to Keith back at Camp Synonymous, that during her time helping her father in the archive, she learnt that at one point, Dojo travelled to the far far future and was trick by his own descendant to cause human enslavement by the dragons after the era of peace, equality, and friendship between dragons and humans, that Dojo achieved in the future too, was over. That was why the Xiaolin Council made an alliance with The World Dragon Council to help with the problem, the conflict between dragons and humans, when the monks, Raymond’s father and Candy’s fathers goes their separate ways. That was why he wants to help as much as he can to make the supernatural world a better place for both humans, dragons, and monsters. That is why Candy has full trust in him in sharing valuable information to him, as her genuine friend.
“I want to be just like my big brother, he is my hero, and most importantly to help my friends from summer camp make their responsibility in the supernatural world better.”
Bonny looks at Keith, admires his selfless cause and his good intention of helping others.
“I see, thanks you for telling me this. I am honoured to meet such a fine man, full of honour and noble aspirations for the cause.”
Keith rubs the back of his neck. “Geez, you don’t have to say that.”
“You are too modest Sir Mystery,” said Bonny, authentic smiling at the son of Martin Mystery and Alexandra Mystery.

"Your heart's in the right place, but you don't understand what could happen if you slay that dragon."
"It stops terrorizing all the surrounding villages?"
"Dragons are territorial, but that doesn't mean they don't have family and friends. Kill one dragon, and many more will come and raze the whole fiefdom in retribution."
"So what are we supposed to do? Just let it keep burning fields and stealing livestock until we all starve?"

You know, witnessing the rise in the number of crossover fanfics between Danny Phantom and Batman is a great pleasure and nothing can awe me more than seeing many concepts and ideas being written and shared.
That’s said, I still wish for other fandoms to crossover with Danny Phantom. Like, Jake Long: American Dragon for example. Or Ben 10.
Danny and Jake are both half human half otherworldly creature (ghost/dragon) and they struggle a lot with their duties of protecting people/creatures and having fun experience as a young teen.
If there ever was a fic written about these two, I just want them to sit and ramble on about everything and discover that they are not much different after all. People who have followed me would know I ship these two and I’m in a rareship hell of my own.
For Ben 10, it’s a bit difficult since Ben 10 has many sequels and reboots and I had stopped watching a long time ago but again, green ghost power with green alien light seem like a fun party. Not to mention, both have a female red-head relative (Gwen as Ben’s cousin/ Jazz as Danny’s sister) who are smarter and have more common sense than the boys. Kinda remember about how as a kid I used to make Ben and Danny half-brothers in my head.
I know some other also do crossover between DP and Randy Cunningham: 9th grade ninja but I have never watched it so I’m not sure to be honest. At the same time, however, most of my knowledge and love of Batman and his family came from fanfic and tumblr headcanon, with the Wayne Family Adventures being an actual comic I have actually read so...

American Dragon Timeline
I’ve been trying for a while now to figure out the timeline of this show, because it makes no sense in the order that Disney Channel originally aired the episodes. It also makes no sense in the episode list on Jeff Goode’s website, which he claims to be the proper chronology of events.
I had to come up with a few convoluted headcanons to make this work, but I think I’ve finally pieced together a coherent timeline (note that for a lot of the filler episodes, it doesn’t actually matter that much when they take place, I was just trying to stick as close to Jeff Goode’s chronology as possible.)
September 2004
Old School Training
It’s implied in this episode that Jake got his dragon powers very recently. They don’t say how recently, but given how new the whole thing is to him, I’d say it’s probably only been about a week or two.
Here’s where we come up against our first issue with canon. In The Legend of Dragon Tooth, Jake says he got his dragon powers when he turned 13, and in Shapeshifter, he says he’s a Pisces, which means his birthday would be in late February, or March. There’s no way the timeline makes sense if that’s the case, so my headcanon is that Jake is just like…really bad at astrology, and he somehow confused Pisces with another star sign.
We also have the issue of how far behind he seems to be in school (he’s 14 in early season 2, but still in 7th grade). So, two more headcanons to explain that. Number one, Jake’s birthday is actually sometime in early September, so he missed the cutoff to go to kindergarten when he was 5, and had to wait until he was 6, placing him a year behind (some places don’t allow kids to start kindergarten if they turn 5 after September 1st. I knew a boy in my old youth group who was almost a year older than everyone else in our grade, because he had an October birthday). Number two, at some point in elementary school, Jake was held back a grade. So the first episode takes place shortly after Jake’s 13th birthday, at the beginning of his sixth grade year.
Since Trixie and Spud are supposed to be the same age as him, that would mean they must’ve both been held back at some point as well (that especially makes sense for Spud—anyone who’s purposely failed as many tests as he has would almost definitely have to repeat a grade).
This would also make Rose younger than them. She’s very bright, and she seems like a good student, so it’s unlikely she was ever held back. But we don’t want her to be too much younger than them, so I’ll headcanon that she also has a birthday in early September, making her a year younger than Jake. If that’s the case, she’d be 12 in season one, and 13/14 in season 2.
Adventures in Trollsitting/Fu Dog Takes a Walk
The dogcatcher says that it’s September.
 September/October 2004
Shapeshifter Dragon Breath The Legend of Dragon Tooth The Talented Mr. Long Professor Rotwood’s Thesis Act 4, Scene 15 The Long Weekend Body Guard Duty Dragon Summit
This episode has to take place after Shapeshifter, Dragon Breath, and Professor Rotwood’s Thesis, since the Dragon Council makes references back to Jake’s actions in all of those episodes. It also has to take place before The Halloween Bash, which places it sometime in September or October.
 October 2004
The Halloween Bash
Jeff Goode’s website lists this episode as taking place between Ski Trip and The Hunted, but there’s no way that’s possible, because Ski Trip takes place close to Valentine’s Day, and The Hunted takes place during the Equinox (they don’t specify which Equinox, but it would have to be the one in September; it’s the only way the timeline makes any sense, even with the generous liberties I’m taking with these headcanons). So The Halloween Bash has to take place before Ski Trip. No one in this episode makes any reference to knowing Rose’s identity, so it works out just fine.
 February 2005
The Ski Trip
Valentine’s Day was actually on a Monday in 2005, so presumably this episode takes place the weekend of February 11-13.
 March 2005
The Egg/The Heist
Easter was on March 27 in 2005. This is how I know The Hunted takes place during the Autumnal Equinox; Rose was still in the city during Easter weekend, a week after the Vernal Equinox.
Eye of the Beholder Ring Around the Dragon Jake Takes the Cake
 May 2005
Fu and Tell/Flight of the Unicorn
Flight of the Unicorn takes place on Memorial Day, which was May 30th that year
 May/June (or September) 2005
Keeping Shop
Hong Kong Nights
I know Jeff Goode’s website says this is the last episode of season one, but I absolutely cannot accept any episode besides The Hunted as the season finale, so I’m just gonna recognize that the council has made a decision, but elect to ignore it.
 September 2005
The Hunted
The Autumnal Equinox in 2005 was on September 22
 Late November/Early December 2005
Half Baked
Jake says it’s been three months since Rose left. It couldn’t be exactly three months, because that would place this episode in late December, and school would be out for the holidays. So presumably it’s late November or early December, and Jake is rounding up when he says three months.
The Academy
This one would pretty much have to take place very soon after Half Baked, like within a week or two.
 Late December 2005
Breakout
This episode establishes that 88 and 89 are in the city working as apprentices to the Huntsman, so it has to take place before the Christmas episode, which they also appear in.
Hairy Christmas
January/February 2006
(Most of these don’t actually have to take place in January or February, aside from Dreamscape and Fool’s Gold. The rest could be pretty much any time during Jake’s 7th grade year. I’m just trying to stick to Jeff Goode’s chronology, and keep at least some of the episodes in the order he listed.)
Hero of the Hourglass Bring It On Family Business Something Fishy This Way Comes The Doppelganger Gang Dreamscape Fool's Gold
 February 2006
The Love Cruise
They never explicitly say it’s Valentine’s Day, but the whole concept of the Love Cruise seems like something a school would do for Valentine’s Day. Also adds an extra layer of heartbreak, because it means Jake and Rose’s breakup happened on the one-year anniversary of Jake finding out Rose was Huntsgirl. Ouch. February has not been kind to Jake.
On the other hand, I’d prefer to headcanon that Jake and Rose got to spend the whole summer together before their breakup, going on dream dates every night and not having to set their alarms for school in the morning (can we just let them be happy for a little while? PLEASE?!?!?!?), so maybe the Love Cruise wasn’t on Valentine’s Day, and instead was just some random school event at the beginning of their 8th grade year.
 May 2006
Feeding Frenzy
They spend three days visiting Jake’s family, so it’s either Memorial Day weekend, spring break, or summertime. Most likely Memorial Day or spring break, since Jake says in this episode that he’s been the American Dragon for a year and a half.
 May/June 2006
A Befuddled Mind The Rotwood Files Haley Gone Wild Switcheroo
This one takes place after The Love Cruise, because Jake and Rose’s recent breakup is a minor plot point, so it only takes place at this point if we headcanon Love Cruise taking place in February.
Young At Heart
I know this is supposed to be a later episode, but going by this timeline, Jake would be 15 for most of his 8th grade year, and in this episode Jake, Trixie, and Spud talk about being 14, so it has to take place during 7th grade
Summer between 7th and 8th grade
A Ghost Story
 Late September/Early October 2006
Homecoming
I never went to public school (I was unfortunately homeschooled), but it’s my understanding that middle schools don’t do Homecoming. So my headcanon is that it was actually just a junior high prom or something, but a few students on the planning committee approached Sun Park and begged her to let them model it after the Homecoming dances at their older siblings’ high schools. Sun was delighted by their enthusiasm, so of course she agreed.
Any time during their 8th grade year
Supernatural Tuesday Siren Says Shaggy Frog Nobody's Fu Game On Bite Father, Bite Son Magic Enemy #1
 February 2007
Year of the Jake
Chinese New Year was on February 18th in 2007
 March 2007
Furious Jealousy
Trixie and Spud put together a Daylight Savings themed school event, so this episode takes place either in October of 06 or March of 07. We’ll go with March because it’s closer to the end of the series.
 June 2007
Being Human
Haley and Gramps both say in this episode that Jake is 14, but he would actually be 15 by this point (even if my whole timeline is wrong and he actually is a Pisces, he still would’ve had his 15th birthday already). Presumably the writers just weren’t paying close enough attention to their established timeline, but the in-universe explanation is…sometimes family members forget your age; my best friend keeps saying her youngest sister is 15, when in fact her sister is turning 17 this year. Sometimes you lose track.
 Summer after 8th grade
The Hong Kong Longs
Presumably this episode takes place around July or August, which means Jake and his friends would be almost 16 by this point (and Rose would be almost 15, assuming my headcanon about her being a year younger than them is accurate).

Fictober Day 18: We Can't Do This On Our Own
Prompt number: Prompt #18
Fandom: American Dragon Jake Long
Pairings/Characters: Jake/Rose; Haley; Susan
Rating: T
Warnings: violence; blood; injuries; illness
You can read under the cut or click here to read it on fanfiction
Jake struggled to stand and then collapsed back onto his head with a groan.
“That’s it,” Susan said sharply. “You are sentenced to bed rest.”
“Mom, I’m fine,” Jake said stubbornly, mostly because he knew that was what Gramps would want.
In reality, Jake was pretty sure that he had the worst case of the flu that anyone in the entire world had ever had. He was sweating so badly that his vision was starting to go fuzzy, his head was killing him, and Jake wanted water so badly he would kill for it, except every time he even thought about sipping at water, his stomach would seize and he’d be running for the bathroom. All of that made Jake grateful when Susan put a clean comforter over him and fluffed his pillow behind his head. Not even Gramps could argue when his mother put an order down.
“Sleep,” Susan ordered. “I don’t want to hear a peep out of you for a while.”
“Yes, Mom,” Jake agreed, asleep by the time that she turned out his bedroom light.
(-.-)
“Haley? What are you doing here?”
“Jake’s sick so I’m taking over his dragon duties for the day,” Haley said peppily.
Rose squinted at her, looking suspicious and Haley tried not to let her smile slip. Rose was dressed to hunt and she looked ferocious as she always did when she was armed. Rose would not hesitate to send Haley packing if she sensed that she was being lied to.
“Jake didn’t text me,” Rose said. “And where’s Gramps and Fu? Aren’t they supposed to be here? Are we still doing this?”
“Fu’s at the shop but Gramps is around, scouting.” Haley tried not to sweat. She hadn’t thought of these answers but she was smart. Which was why she was here. Not only was she smart but she was acing all of her training and it was time to prove to Gramps and Fu and Jake that she wasn’t a liability in the field. She was just as good and as capable as Jake was – maybe even better by now. “And, of course we’re still doing this. Reports of a ghoul in New York don’t ever happen. If it’s real then we need to solve it ASAP.”
Rose nodded but then she looked down at her phone. Haley tried not to look frustrated but she hated that Rose was doubting her. Haley was lying but Rose shouldn’t think that!
“Let’s go,” Haley said. “We’ll start checking the abandoned buildings and see if we can find it.”
Rose held her ground. “We should wait for Gramps to get back from scouting. He might have good information and, honestly, Haley, I’ve been reading about ghouls like crazy. They’re dangerous. We can’t do this on our own.”
“We’re not doing anything,” Haley said. She’d read about ghouls too. They were dangerous but she was a dragon and Rose was a trained hunter. So, what if ghouls were blood-thirsty and their bites were nearly always fatal? Jake went up against things like that all the time and Haley had Rose with her. “We’re just doing some scouting too. We’ll meet Gramps back here and compare info.”
Rose pursed her lips but Haley knew that she had Rose convinced.
“We won’t fight anything until we talk to Gramps,” Haley reiterated.
                Finally, Rose nodded.
They crept across the abandoned lawn and heading into the apartment building. Ghouls were often found in rural, mostly abandoned places, and generally outside of North America. Gramps had thought the reports of what was going on in this abandoned apartment complex sounded like a ghoul and had been – sensibly – alarmed by it. They were supposed to leave right away because of that but with Jake on flu lockdown, Gramps had gone to find reinforcements to take with him. Not once had he asked Haley, even though she was fifteen now and not a child and Jake had been doing things like this since he was even younger. She’d been in training for, like, ten years! She was ready.
Rose picked the heavy lock on the door.
“If it’s locked, could a ghoul get in here?” Haley wondered.
“There’s probably a ton of broken windows and holes to get in,” Rose said, pushing the rusty door open with a grunt. “I just don’t have the patience to find them.”
Their footsteps seemed too loud, even with the dusty that billowed around the foyer. Haley looked around, picking out some signs that other people had been here. Or other creatures. There were disturbances in the grime, piles of food wrappers, and abandoned clothing strewn about. Rose handed Haley one of her flashlights before turning the other on, shining it around to the darkest parts of the room.
“Be careful. They’ll probably be in the dark if they’re in here and they’ll probably be hungry. Don’t startle them. If we see any signs of inhabitation, we are leaving immediately and waiting for Gramps, okay? The signs of inhabitation are –”
“I told you I did my research,” Haley snapped. Rose was not supposed to be treating her like a child too. “I understand. We’ll be fine. I’ve been trained too, not just Jake.”
“Right, just … Be careful, okay? You’re Jake’s little sister and I love you too.”
Haley tried not to make a face as Rose ruffled her hair as she walked by. As Rose inspected the staircase, Haley headed for the door labelled Laundry Room. It was slightly ajar. Haley slowly opened it, keeping herself braced in case she saw a sign of movement and had to flee. The door creaked as it swung, revealing a staircase. Haley looked over her shoulder but Rose was still walking the perimeter of the lobby. Haley didn’t want to interrupt her and so she headed down the laundry room steps on her own, using her dragon vision and the flashlight Rose had given her. There were cobwebs everywhere and Haley couldn’t keep the disgust from her face.
The actual laundry room was much bigger than Haley anticipated and she felt like every nerve she had was standing on end as she tried to see the whole room at once. They were storage lockers on the wall behind the stairs, some half open, with the other walls lined with white washers and dryers that had lost their shine. They weren’t perfectly against the wall, leaving crooked gaps that anything could be sleeping behind. On the other hand, anything could have made those storage lockers a nest. The storage lockers were darkest, though, and if there was a ghoul here, that was probably where it would go first. Haley started methodically searching through them, trying to calm her heartbeat. This was what she wanted. There was nothing to be scared of. She was capable. She knew she was capable.
As she opened another storage locker, she heard a metallic thump and for a moment, Haley stopped breathing.
                “Rose?” she called.
                “Haley?”
                Rose was definitely still upstairs.
Another thump and Haley slowly turned. There was a ghoul, in all its white, humanoid, fleshiness. It was creeping over one of the dryers and even though she couldn’t see eyes actually on its face, Haley knew that it was looking directly at her. Its mouth gaped slightly, revealing thick teeth that could tear through her scales as if they were tissue paper.
It took another creeping step forward, as if testing her.
                “Haley, where did you go?”
The stairs. Haley had to get around the other side of the stairs and get up the stairs and then she had Rose would run out the door and Haley would have to confess everything because standing here, looking at the ghoul with its long limbs and longer claws designed for ensnaring all types of struggling prey, Haley knew that she had made a mistake. She was not ready for this.
                “Haley?”
Rose was going to come downstairs and then they would both be trapped. Haley could at least make sure that didn’t happen. She could at least be that brave and she had to go right now.
Using her wings to give her a head start, Haley made a mad scramble for the stairs. As soon as she was in motion, so was the ghoul and it was much faster than Haley’s readings had let on. She could feel the edge of its claw against her back leg and she let out a scream.
                “HALEY!?”
Haley burst out of the laundry room door, colliding with Rose and sending Rose sprawling to the ground.
                “RUN!” Haley shouted. “JUST RUN!”
Rose started clamouring backwards, trying to get on her feet and move away at the same time. Haley was ashamed to say that she made it to the front door by the time that she thought to look back. She paused with her hand on the door as Rose let out a loud grunt, sending her foot into the ghoul’s face. It already had a firm grip on her other leg. Rose struggled to get her staff in a position where she could stab it in the head. She raised it but before she could try to deal a blow to it, Rose screamed.
Blood gushed seemingly everywhere. Haley had never seen anything like the fountain that was coming out of Rose’s leg where the creature had sunk its teeth into her. Its white face was staining pink as it went for another bite. Rose grunted and tried to dig her spear in.
Haley knew Rose was going to lose that fight. Haley turned her back on the door and took another step back into the lobby. The floorboards creaked under her weight and the ghoul’s head shot up.
“You will not,” Rose hissed at it, kicking the ghoul in the face to bring its attention back to her. “Haley, go.”
                “I’m not leaving you!”
“I’m already dead! Get out of here!” Rose shouted, still struggling with the ghoul even as she proclaimed it. The ghoul took another chunk out of her arm and Rose wailed. “Tell Jake I love him, okay? Now go. This thing is not getting both of us.”
“I’m so sorry, Rose,” Haley whimpered but she didn’t think that Rose could hear her anymore.
Then, Haley turned and fled, heavy with her consequences.

American Dragon: Jake Long Reboot
American Dragon: Jake Long was one of my favorite shows since I love magical creatures, especially dragons. While, the show was awesome, there were some things that I didn’t like or felt that they could have been handled better. So, I decided to add American Dragon: Jake Long to my list of shows that I’m making reboots off. I give my thanks to @princess-of-the-corner for giving me some of these ideas.
This reboot would be set in current times, so there’s a risk of technology like smartphones and cameras exposing the Magical world. Many magical creatures have adapted to these modern times though some still struggle (like Jake’s grandpa).
Jake’s father, Johnathan, knowing about the Magical world and that his children being dragons from the beginning. Susan would have told him while they were dating, though maybe after they had graduated high school. I’m thinking that it could go like this: Jonathan proposed to Susan and she felt guilty about marrying while keeping such a big secret from him, so she told him about being from a dragon family. Jonathan did freak out a bit at first but ultimately accepted Susan as he is a bit more mature than his high school self from the episode “Hero of the Hourglass’.
Susan has dragon powers since the whole ‘skipped a generation’ thing didn’t make much sense to me besides some excuse to not involve Jake’s mother with his dragon duties. The only way I see that making sense is Susan having human ancestry but, considering Grampa’s didn’t approve of her dating a human, I’m certain that Susan comes from a all-dragon bloodline.
Susan’s dragon form would have purple scales like her sweater (I’m using season 2 designs) and be wingless like her father since she’s full Chinese.
As suggested by @princess-of-the-corner ,Jake and Rose’s relationship being something like a “enemy love square”. Here’s how they put it:
So like. You have the Jake and Rose romance, but the Dragon vs. Huntsgirl rivalry from the original series.
But there’s a few times where Rose gets involved with the Dragon and, believing monsters to be dangerous, doesn’t blow her cover and attack him outright. This would lead her to learning that maybe the Huntsclan is wrong about Magical creatures, long before learning that the boy she loves is the Dragon she’s trying to kill. Dragon!Jake also gets to see that Rose is surprisingly more capable and badass than he thought, and is a little suspicious of how well she’s taking Magic/how she already seems to know some things but not others.
Meanwhile, sometimes Jake gets involved with the Huntsgirl. While the Huntsgirl wonders why Jake has such a hatred and distrust of her, Jake gets to learn how the Huntsclan is pretty much a cult that indoctrinates kids and feeds them lies, so some of the members are probably worth saving.
It never made sense to me that Jake was the only American Dragon or that he alone is in charge of protecting all the magical creatures in America. So in this reboot:
Every city and state have their own dragon protecting them. If a dragon from another city/state/country comes to their territory, the local dragon can accept their help but would still be in charge.
Jake is not the first dragon that was born in America and jurisdiction only covers New York City.
He’s not even the first New York Dragon but the previous one was killed and Jake was the only candidate available to replace them. That’s why the Dragon Council let a 14-year-old who just recently started training be the city’s magical protector.
It would make for an interesting conflict/struggle if older dragons have doubts about a teenager being tasked with being a magical protector and Jake would have to prove himself worthy to them.
Spud was hinted to have some magical heritage that he’s unaware off, so in this reboot, he would learn that his great-grandfather was a powerful wizard and the magic powers skipped two generations of his family until he was born. Spud will then begin learning magic spells and maybe encounter an enemy or rival of his great-grandfather. Trixie will remain a regular human since muggles can be awesome without powers!
It doesn’t make sense that the Dark Dragon would be the first and only evil dragon in history, with all the stories/myths about dragons terrorizing villages, though, some of those stories could be inaccurate and the dragons demonized. Regardless, there has been other evil dragons in history with the Dark Dragon being the most recent and the most powerful.
In an earlier draft of the episode “Hong Kong Longs”, it would have been revealed that Chang was Jake’s maternal grandmother, so I’m keeping this in the reboot. Chang and Lao Shi had a relationship in the past (I think that was implied in the show) and they had Susan out of wedlock. Chang left her with Lao Shi as she had ambitions of becoming a member of the Dragon Council and would have been hindered by raising a child.
This is all I have for now but I will add more to this soon, and I’m open to ideas and suggestions.

so earlier i was thinking about making a funny post about 2 of shows i watched as a kid and fuckin loved: The Life and Times of Juniper Lee and American Dragon: Jake Long.
