Uneven Progress as the Mets Try to Escape Their Early-Season Hole
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports NEW YORK — On June 2, the Mets’ season was looking grim. At Citi Field, Jake Diekman served up a two-run ninth inning home run to the Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte, turning a 4-3 lead into a 5-4 deficit. Within a matter of minutes, the Mets fell to 24-35, a season-worst 11 games below .500. After last summer’s deadline sell-off, 2024 wasn’t supposed to be their year, and…

Rays Edge Twins 7-4.
Rays 7 Twins 4 W-Glasnow (9-5) L-Gray (7-7) SV-Fairbanks (23)
The Minnesota Twins have a fairly easy schedule to close out the regular season. They would face their toughest remaining test tonight in the Tampa Bay Rays at Target Field. The Rays were ready from the start as Yandy Diaz led-off the first with a single. Randy Arozarena then dumped a single to left and Josh Lowe rocketed a single to center, which scored a run. Tampa Bay had a one-run lead before Minnesota grabbed a bat. The Rays would add on in the third as Randy Arozarena reached on an error by Carlos Correa. He reached second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. Jose Siri singled him home to double the Rays lead. The Twins would find some offense in the fourth as Max Kepler knocked a Tyler Glasnow slider out to right for a solo homer. The Rays would answer in the fifth as Josh Lowe reached on an infield single. Jose Siri was hit by a pitch and Taylor Walls belted a Dylan Floro fastball out to right for a three-run homer. Yandy Diaz added a solo shot in the sixth off Brent Headrick and the Rays extended their lead to five. Brandon Lowe and Randy Arozarena singled and Vidal Brujan hit an RBI groundout. The Rays had a 7-1 lead, but the Twins would inch closer in the bottom of the sixth. Eddie Julien and Alex Kirlloff started the inning with singles. Royce Lewis then smoked a Tyler Glasnow fastball out to left for a three-run homer and the Twins were within three. Tyler Glasnow finished off six innings and the bullpen did the rest. Kevin Kelly fanned two in a 1-2-3 seventh and Jake Diekman struck out two in a scoreless eighth. Pete Fairbanks had a clean ninth as the Rays took the opener from the Twins tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Sonny Gray struggled with control, but kept his team in the game. He went four innings and allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Dylan Floro gave up three runs in the fifth, Brent Headrick allowed two over 2 1/3 innings, and Josh Winder retired the last five men. Max Kepler led the way with two hits on the night. The Twins hit 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Tomorrow, former Twin Zack Littell will face Joe Ryan in Game 2.

Taking Out the 2022 Garbage - Red Sox Edition
Taking Out the 2022 Garbage – Red Sox Edition
The best thing I can say about the 2022 Boston Red Sox season is that it’s over. This season has been a failure-to-launch, swervy dumpster-fire that was chock-full of underperformances and roster shortcomings. The worst part about the season? It was good enough to keep you thinking they had a chance to turn things around until late August/early September when in reality it was over before it…

Rays Shutout Twins 7-0.
Twins 0 Rays 7 W-Eflin (8-1) L-Varland (3-2)
The Minnesota Twins have done well against the good teams in the American League with series wins over the Yankees and Astros. This week they faced a tougher task in the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg starting tonight. A pitcher’s duel broke out as Zach Eflin and Louie Varland tossed up zeroes for the first three innings of play. Luke Raley led-off the fourth with a triple and Randy Arozarena singled him home. Harold Ramirez followed with a walk and Christian Bethancourt singled home a run. Vidal Brujan bunted home a run and the Rays led by three after four frames. Tampa Bay got back to work in the fifth as Wander Franco drew a one-out walk and Luke Raley crushed a Louie Varland change-up out to center for a two-run blast. The Rays extended their lead to five after five innings of play. Jose Siri belted a Louie Varland slider out to left to start the seventh and Tampa Bay kept pouring it on. The next batter, Yandy Diaz drew a walk and Wander Franco doubled. Randy Arozarena knocked in a run with an RBI groundout to third and the Rays had a seven-run lead. Meanwhile, Zach Eflin ran with it through 6 2/3 shutout innings. Jalen Beeks got four big outs and Jake Diekman had a 1-2-3 ninth as the Rays shutout the Twins tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Louie Varland had a rough start against a good lineup. He went six innings and allowed seven runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Emilio Pagan threw two shutout innings with two strikeouts. The Twins scattered four hits and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. They left six men on base. Byron Buxton was put on the injured list with bruised ribs as Trevor Larnach was activated off the injured list. Tomorrow, Pablo Lopez faces Shawn Armstrong in Game 2 from The Trop.

Lovullo; Bullpen Need To Be On Their 'A' Game Down The Stretch
Lovullo; Bullpen Need To Be On Their ‘A’ Game Down The Stretch
With the Diamondbacks embarking on the toughest stretch of their schedule, one that MLB columnist, Jeff Passan, recently tabbed as the most difficult schedule of all the contending teams to round out this season, Arizona is going to need to rely on the unit of their team that helped carry them through a fantastic April & June, which saw them play to a sterling 39-17 combined record, their…
