Defining feminism as a commitment to gender justice means that it cannot be reduced to a matter of personal ethics, choice, or style. Instead, feminism is a commitment to social change. This is sometimes obscured by misinterpretations of the “second wave” U.S.-feminist slogan “the personal is political,” and by stereotypes of feminists as preoccupied with “politically correct” conduct. “The personal is political” was a powerful slogan expressing radical insights. These included the insights that one’s so-called personal life can be a site of injustice and domination whose inequities stem from social arrangements rather than individual personalities; that so-called personal problems therefore often have systemic causes; and that so-called personal decisions about matters such as sexuality, self-presentation, and eating often have political significance. Although these insights were, in their time, revolutionary, accepting them does not entail that feminism can be equated with “lifestyle” choices. To the contrary, taking seriously these insights suggests another popular slogan of second-wave feminism: “There are no individual solutions.” Personal choices are important, but feminism is more centrally concerned with transforming the social contexts within which such choices are made.

if i see one more person call the gallagher brothers old men. they are in their 50s. that’s firmly middle age.

paul mccartney is old. he’s 82, a solid 30 years older than liam gallagher. and he’s just now finishing a whole world tour.

mick jaggar’s 81 and the stones have a 2025 tour planned.

paul weller just celebrated his 66th birthday and it’s debatable if this classifies him as an old man because he’s still 15/16 years younger than 👆those guys. maybe by 70 i can see calling him old.

noel is 9 years younger than weller. liam is 14 years younger. not even close to old men.

here’s a hard and fast rule: if a person can’t theoretically collect a pension (~63-68 years old in most countries), they cannot be considered old.

Can I ask if youre a radfem?

Hello anon. Yes, I am radical feminist. My academic research and interests are also centered on feminist theory and queer theory particularly as it concerns literature and literary criticism. For over two years now I’ve used this blog mainly as an aesthetics/DA blog and never truly posted much about my studies (ironic bc this is called elistudies). I never truly engaged in discourse through this blog so I am guessing the questions currently flooding my inbox about my feminist stance come from that one post i reblogged in which I told OP to stay strong in as she engaged in the frustrating but necessary work that is being a feminist in academia.

Now, I know there will be an upheaval once this is out bc I am aware that radical feminists do not have the best reputation (but tbh feminists have never been treated decently since our work is inherently disruptive to the status quo) but especially here on tumblr where radical feminists often clash with trans rights activists.

Before commenting anything stupid i implore you to inform yourself on what radical feminism really is. I’ll leave u here with some screenshots from Alison M. Jaggar and Paula S. Rothenberg’s introduction to feminist frameworks in which they briefly explain the different approaches to feminism. i’ve chosen for you the sections on radical feminism, socialist feminism, and intersectional feminism. Do keep in mind this book is pretty old published in 1978 with a second edition in 1984, and many frameworks have evolved and developed since then, but the core tenets have stayed somewhat the same.

I am also leaving you with an excerpt of the Combahee River Collective Statement in which they delineate the ideals of Black Radical Feminism.

In short, I remain committed to women’s liberation and i’m not ashamed of it.
