THE COMFORT OF GHOSTS By Jacqueline Winspear @AllisonandBusby #JacquelineWinspear #TheComfortOfGhosts #BookReview #Blogblast
Available now / Hardback / ebook / SYNOPSIS 1945. In London, it feels as if the peace is harder than the war. Years of devastating Luftwaffe bombing has obliterated stretches of the city and left others abandoned. Against this backdrop, psychologist-investigator Maisie Dobbs is drawn into the plight of a group of adolescent orphans, along with a gravely ill demobbed soldier who are squatting in…

#bookreview #InThisGraveHour by #JacquelineWinspear #MaisieDobbs This is the 13th novel in the Maisie Dobbs mystery series. I only read the first novel of the series before this one, but hints of the previous stories were scattered throughout. It is a quick read, and good for a trip. Some of the actions seem to be cliche and align well with the flow of mass market paperback mystery series, but it's not as bad as other series. There were many times when two characters were communicating with their eyes only when they wanted to keep their emotions hidden from a third character. The main story involves a survivor of World War 1 whose psyche splinters at a fact that is distorted into a cause for revenge. As a result it's as if the war has not ended. The backdrop is Britain's preparation for World War 2. I look forward to reading books 2-12. Enough stories were left hanging in this book that book 14 should be interesting. #book #bookstagram #bookaddict #AmReading #booknerd #bibliophile #goodreads #booklover #read #Reading #ReadingGreetings

Book Review 008: Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
So I have a bit of a quirk, I love my name. A lot. And I instantly love anyone who has the same name. So whenever I see an author with the same name I must read their book. Well at least one of them. It’s how I ended up reading a book about physics that was waaaaaayyyy outside of my realm of knowledge.
So when I came across a book by Jacqueline Winspear while putting up books meant for holds I was like “Mine”. I went to read the first chapter and quickly felt that I needed to read the book before it. This book was somewhat in the middle of a rather long list of books. So I placed a hold on the first book of the series. And waited.

Maisie Dobbs was a slow and confusing read for me. I was intrigued by the premise of a young woman in the late 1920’s earning a living as a private investigator. The story started off good I was committed to finishing the book after the first chapter. But the “myster” as it was, was very slow moving. It took me a few spurts of reading but I made it.

Then it just stopped in the middle of the myster and switched to the back history of Maisie Dobbs. I was thrown for a bit, I thought it would be a chapter and then get back to the main story. But nope, this was the main story...I think. I’m really not sure. The back story took up more the half the book. Which I’ve never seen done before, ever. It almost would have been better to have the backstory be it’s own book. It was that well developed and felt so at odds with the rest of the story. I mean I guess it was all connected but just I don’t know distracting at the same time.
Once I got into the book it wasn’t that bad, the writing is pretty solid and easy to read. The characters are real developed and the end did it’s job I want to know what happens next to Maisie. I’m also curious to see if she breaks up the main story with another story with in a story ploy again.
