Album Review: Tony Trischka - Earl Jam
Tony Trischka had no problem recruiting veterans and newcomers, traditionalists and modernists, to help bring his Earl Jam to life.
And that’s not surprising, considering Trischka built the arrangements around transcriptions of Earl Scruggs solos recorded during private jam sessions with John Hartford in the 1980s and ’90s that Trischka received during COVID-19 quarantine.
Billy Strings’ status as bluegrass’ future is confirmed as he leads a band including banjoists Trischka and Béla Fleck, mandolinist Sam Bush, fiddler Michael Cleveland and others on the LP-opening “Brown’s Ferry Blues.”
Later on, Bush supports another youngster, sharing vocal and instrumental duties with Molly Tuttle on “Dooley.” Yet another young voice in the old-time genre, Sierra Ferrell, is super-present with her voice from another time, fronting three of Earl Jam’s 15 cuts including “San Antonio Rose” and a stunning rendition of “Amazing Grace” with the McCrary Sisters adding support and whose reprise closes the album.
Veterans get involved, too, as Del McCoury and (most of) his eponymous Band take charge on “Roll on Buddy” and former Pure Prairie Leaguer and current Eagle Vince Gill sings the mournful “Bury Me Beneath the Willow.”
Vocalist Lindsay Lou; fiddlers Darol Anger, Brownyn Keith-Hynes, Brittany Haas and Stuart Duncan; mandolinist Dominick Leslie and Jacob Jolliff; guitarist Bryan Sutton; and others make cameos. Trischka, meanwhile, recreates Scruggs’ solos exactly as they unfolded on that lost-and-found recording to create a hybridized LP where sum and parts are equally impactful.

"13 CONVICTS AGREE TO TRIAL WITHOUT JURY," Kingston Whig-Standard. June 24, 1933. Page 1. ---- Conference Was Held at Penitentiary Friday Night --- BEHAN HOLDS OUT ---- Thirteen convicts of Kingston Penitentiary, facing charges of rioting at the institution last October, will face trial before Judge Deroche and Judge Madden without jury, commencing on July 3, as a result of a conference held at the penitentiary last night between W. F. Nickle, K.C., W. M. Nickle, K.C., J. M. Simpson, K.C., and the convicts. This will mean that only Convict Sam Behan remains to be tried by jury and his trial will open next week.
This unexpected action completely altered the complexion of the trials and forecast the early ending of the entire matter and a great saving in expense.
The decision to have the men tried without jury was not arrived at until late last evening and for the first time in history a party of fifteen convicts marched from the new female prison, under a bright moonlight to the main penitentiary. It was the first time that convicts were paraded at night and it was late, quite late, when the convicts went back down the road to the female prison.
There had been some indication yesterday afternoon that some of the convicts would change their election and following adjournment of court last evening there was a conference of the judges.
This resulted in a meeting of the lawyers retained by convicts later in the evening and at the penitentiary the convicts charged, all of whom are in the female prison, behind the warden's residence, were taken from their cells, marched along the road to the north gate and in the main penitentiary held conference with their counsel. Behan Wants Jury All but Convict Sam Behan decidedto ask permission to change their election and be tried by judge alone.
Accordingly there was a delay of almost an hour this morning in the opening of court, as counsels and Judges conferred on the new turn in the trials. Finally when court opened Judge Deroche and Judge Madden, were on the bench. In the jury room were thirteen convicts, brought from the penitentiary under an unusually heavy guard of a dozen officers of the institution.
Individually the convicts were brought into the court room and each, in turn asked permission to change election to be tried by Judge alone without a jury. The applications were granted and the following convicts will come up for trial on July 3 at ten o'clock, Judge Deroche cautioning the convicts to have their evidence prepared and be ready for their trial: Convicts Adrian Vanderyacht, Robert Spinks, George Peters, Saulle Flader.Paul Demerse, John Ernest Snell, Willard Millich, Jacob Miller, John Jolliffe, Leo Halsall, Mickey McDonald, George Liticoff.
As soon as the thirteen convicts had been disposed of, Judge Deroche, addressing Convict Tim Buck, whose trial opened yesterday, said that he would not continue today.
Sends Best Wishes "I hope you will excuse me", said Judge Deroche, "but I have to be in Toronto tonight. As a matter of fact, my son is getting married and I think perhaps I should be there."
"Your Honor," replied Convict Buck,in a most gracious tone, "give her my best wishes"
Convict Buck then asked if he would appear on Monday, but Judge Deroche said that his (Buck's) trial would not continue until the morning of July 3. In the meantime Convict Sam Behan, who had previously decided to be tried by judge and jury did not change his election last night, is scheduled to come before judge and Jury on Monday morning at the opening of court. At one side sat Mrs.Tim Buck and Mrs. Sam Cohen, wives of conviets of the institution, while with them was A. E. Smith, secretary of the Canadian Labor Defence League. As Convict Buck came into the court room, he immediately noticed his wife and bowed and smiled a greeting to her.
The Court House this morning seemed a veritable barracks, with uniformed men everywhere to be seen.
There were approximately twenty penitentiary guards at the Court House while city police and special constables were sprinkled all over the interior of the building.

Teams: Manly's axing after show-stopping game
The NRL's form player of the year, Tom Trbojevic, is set to make his return for the Sea Eagles after missing round 23 with a facial injury.Last week, Trbojevic was ruled out as a precaution amid conflicting reports the superstar fullback had damaged a pre-existing facial fracture.
Tom Trbojevic (Getty)While serious injury concerns were put to bed, the Sea Eagles took no chance, resting their talisman who is set to make an emphatic return against the Bulldogs this week.Meanwhile, star teammate Moses Suli has been dropped from Des Hasler's squad despite putting up a stellar man of the match performance last week. Suli has been dropped to reserves, replaced by Brad Parker who slots straight into the centres.

(Getty)Elsewhere, it's tough luck for the Tigers who have the unfortunate task of taking on the Panthers without standout star Adam Doueihi who has been sidelined with a knee injury. To make matters harder for Michael Maguire's men, star winger Brian To'o has made an early return from injury and will line up on Sunday evening.Meanwhile, the Raiders have dumped halfback Sam Williams after back-to-back critical losses to the Storm and Manly.

RWLC: Lebanon 32 - 14 Ireland Match Report & Highlights
Lebanon 32 Ireland 14 RLWC 2022 : Ireland fell to a crushing defeat at the hands of Lebanon as their Rugby League World Cup dreams were shattered in the Leigh Sport Village.
Reece Robinson was the first to get over for a try for Lebanon and Mitchell Moses added the extras.
It worsened for Ireland just two minutes later as Jacob Kiraz benefitted after Ireland fell foul to ill discipline and conceded another penalty within their own 30 metre line.
Brandon Morkos added Lebanon’s third try just before half-time but Ireland did at least respond before the break as Louis Senior skipped over for the Wolfhounds’ first try. The extras were missed and that made it 20-4.
Lebanon head coach Michael Cheika, speaking to BBC Two:
“It was a bit scrappy at times. You clearly saw two teams who were nervous playing in a very important game.
“We stuck to the fundamentals well, I wasn’t too happy we lost our heads a little bit. I thought Ireland would try and rough us up a little bit, we lost a bit of our way there and that’s when we made some mistakes.
“But all in all, really pleased. Now we’ve got to finish the job off to qualify against Jamaica. How we prepare over the next seven days will decide if we get through or not.”
Head-to-head
Lebanon have never lost to Ireland in their three previous meetings, drawing twice and winning once.
Their last encounter was in 2009, when Lebanon recorded a 40-16 win in Bridgend and this will be the first time they’ve faced each other at the Rugby League World Cup.
Ireland record
Ireland first qualified for the Rugby League World Cup in 2000 as co-hosts, registering their best performance to date of fifth place.
They have featured in every tournament since, coming ninth in 2017 after failing to advance from their group, despite two wins over Wales and Italy.
They are in fine form winning their last three men’s internationals by an aggregate score of 115-14.
Lebanon record
The 2017 Rugby League World Cup was just the second time the Cedars have qualified for the tournament.
Mitchell Moses put in a Player of the Match performance in their opening game to claim their first ever win, a 29-18 victory over France.

May Day, May Day, May Day. I’m positive for some kind of Covid. I started feeling punky yesterday and/or the day before, and that included a day spent on the Arcata Plaza, when I ran around taking hundreds of photos, and talking to a bunch or people, from the May Pole winding to the music and dancing, bought a tamale and drinks. And on and on. I was getting worn out by the end of the day and my batteries were running low. I also did my Humboldt Hot Air radio show Friday, hung out at The Pub, and then I went the Humbrews streamed some of The Grouch and company. On Saturday I went to the Jacob JOLLIFF Band show on Saturday evening, which I also streamed. I wore a mask at the Playhouse—Jackie Dandeneau insists on it—and I probably should have done so all weekend, but the truth is I didn’t. I’m sorry for all of the friends and strangers I exposed. All I can say is a basically I fucked up. I should have known better. The impact of my quarantine begins now. Amy shows no signs of the virus and she’s much more careful, she doesn’t go out except for shopping and always with an N-95 mask. Maybe she won’t get, and today she cared for me and helped me with my test. I was scheduled to sub on a show tomorrow on Humboldt Hot Air, ironically taking over a shift for someone with Covid. (Sorry, I’m not going to the studio for awhile.) I basically feel like crap. I’ve been taking my temperature all day and started with 98.4 (normal for me) but it jumped to 99.5 when I took the test, and now it’s 101.4. When I’m done warning my friends (basically the whole town) I’m going to read the latest, from reliable sources. Frankly, I’m worried. I could end up in a hospital or even dead. I certainly hope that doesn’t happen. I had a strange experience Saturday night. I sat next a guy from Petrolia who used to read my column, The Hum, while it was in the North Coast Journal. He told me it was written by Bob Doran, and he died a few years ago. It took some doing, but I convinced him that I’m very much alive. At least so far. Here’s hoping that wasn’t some sort of premonition. I’m not ready to die. I have things to do. Wish me luck…🦠❤️🔥🦠 (at Arcata, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdHcRAZJQzJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Changes Over Yonder for Mountain String Band
Mandolin player Jacob Joliff is leaving Yonder Mountain String Band at year’s end and will be replaced, apparently temporarily, by multi-instrumentalist Nick Piccininni, “who will be touring with us this winter,” the band said on Facebook.
Piccininni, formerly of Floodwood, seemed to acknowledge the transitory nature of his new gig, saying simply: “This winter is going to be sweet.”
Yonder Mountain String Band has concerts booked through July 2020; Joliff will play the band’s New Year’s run in Colorado with Piccininni joining Jan. 6, 2020, in Utah.
“This comes to you as a deeply considered decision,” YMSB wrote. “We are grateful for the music, the memories and friendship we forged with Jake and are in full support of his future endeavors with the Jacob Jolliff Band.
“We hope to join forces with them down the road.”
Joliff called his five-plus years with Yonder “such a pleasure,” thanked its fans “for supporting me as part of the group,” which he joined in 2014 after Jeff Austin’s departure, and wished his soon-to-be-former bandmates Dave Johnston, Allie Kral, Ben Kaufmann and Adam Aijala well.
“I know they’ll have many more great years of touring,” he wrote on Facebook.
Austin, 45, died earlier this year.

Jamaica vs Ireland 2022 Rugby League World Cup Match Information
Jamaica have named their match-day squad for their first ever Rugby League World Cup match, as they prepare to face Ireland at Headingley on Sunday.
The teams meet at 5pm and will kick-off Group C, which also contains New Zealand and Lebanon.
Jamaica thrashed Ireland in their only previous meeting, six years ago. Will that result mean anything as these two kick off their World Cup campaign?
Jamaica vs Ireland RLWC Head-to-head
This will be just the second ever meeting between Jamaica and Ireland; Jamaica emerged victorious in their only previous match-up, defeating Ireland by a margin of 52 points in Dublin in October 2016 (68-16).
Jamaica will be out to enjoy their maiden Rugby League World Cup but the Reggae Warriors have it all to do in a tough group. They start off with this clash against quarter-final hopefuls Ireland who are able to boast a host of Super League talent among their ranks. The Irish know it is vital to get off to a strong start with anything but a win unacceptable.
They have the better squad on paper and need to show it on the pitch but with Sydney Roosters’ Luke Keary set to pull the strings in the halves, he can guide his side to a straightforward win despite facing a game Jamaica with the margin likely to be at least 30 points.
When is Jamaica vs Ireland on and what time does it start?
Jamaica vs Ireland will take place on Saturday 16th October, 2022 – 17:00 (UK)
Where is Jamaica vs Ireland taking place?
Jamaica vs Ireland will take place at Headingley Stadium in Leeds, England
What channel is Jamaica vs Ireland on in the UK?
Jamaica vs Ireland will be televised live on BBC in the UK
Where can I stream Jamaica vs Ireland in the UK?
Jamaica vs Ireland can be streamed live on BBC iPlayer in the UK
