The results are in!

Back in October, we didn’t know anything about Kira Bailey other than that her name was probably going to be Kira Bailey, and she’d be this year’s Girl of the Year. So I put up a survey collecting this fandom’s thoughts about what she might be like.

Now that we know the basic details about her, I’ll lay out all the responses and see what we were speculating and hoping for in this year’s GOTY. Some of you had some really creative answers! And I was pleasantly surprised with how optimistic many of us were that this year’s girl would be extra special and unique in some way.

Personally, I was hoping this would be the year we see the Jess face mold used for the first time in a decade, or with a dark skin tone for the first time ever. Or the Addy face mold used for the first time ever. I see that a lot of you had the same hopes. My GOTY of choice would be an Alaskan girl who competes in sled dog races; seriously, there are so many neat accessories that her collection could have! A little dogsled, dogs, showshoes, cross-country skis, lots of heavy coats and winter clothing.... so much potential! And the books still could have addressed similar topics that Kira’s books did. Maybe that will happen some day.

The full analysis of the results will happen after the cut, but first I have to show you what was the most popular guess regarding what Kira would look like:

The Jess face mold was tied with the Addy face mold in popularity, but my own personal guess was that she’d have the Jess mold, and so with that as the tiebreaker...... look at this, folks....

(minus the freckles but I didn’t include that as an option, and with dark brown eyes instead of light brown.)

I wish I could pass this info on to American Girl and tell them that I have scientific proof that they would have hit a home run with their teen and adult fans, and tons of young kids too, by making Alexis the Girl of the Year.

Now on to the results!

Before we start, I have one more important thing to mention: there were 2 (anonymous) responses that I had to eliminate from the results. The anonymous respondents clearly filled in the survey after details had been leaked onto Tumblr, but before I closed the survey, which was the space of about 36 hours. You’re always free to do so, of course, but I can’t include those answers in the results, since this was specifically made a guessing survey, not a provide-the-right-answers graded test. Including those responses would affect the outcomes of the rest, and would weight them unfairly towards the correct answers, which is not the purpose of this. I am much more interested in hearing your guesses, speculations, and hopes, rather than confirming what we all already know. I appreciate the participation but ask that you do please keep this in mind for next time!

The first question asked about her face mold. Jess and Addy face molds are tied for first place, each winning 15 of the 80 guesses, or 18.8%. Classic won 11 votes, the correct answer of Josefina got 10 votes, JLY #4 got 8 votes, Sonali and New Face Mold tied with 7 votes, Marie-Grace with 4, and the bottom three are Nanea, Kaya, and Joss at one vote each.

Correct answers were given by @anamericangirlslife @benbunny @2o2o-kit @aroaceaddywalker @yeehawdinosaurs and 5 anonymous respondents.

The next question asked about her hair color. This one had an “Other:___” option at the end, in case some other answers weren’t included. Black was the obvious favorite, representing 42.5% of the guesses or 34 out of 80. Dark brown is the next most popular choice at 21 votes. The correct answer of light blonde was next with 7 votes, dark blonde with 5, light brown with 4, light red with 3, and dark red with 2. Rounding out the bottom with 1 vote each were blue, black with colored streaks, dyed blue or pink, or pink or purple. (These responses are only represented on the pie chart, but not included in the list on the right side).

Eye color is the next question. Dark brown was most popular, with 37 of 82 responses or 46.3% of the vote. Hazel was 20% or 16 votes, light brown with 9 votes, blue got 8, the correct answer of green got 6, and gray won a mere 4 votes. (Very confusing for the pie chart to assign the green pie slice to green eyes and blue to gray eyes, so please disregard that).

Skin color is the next question. Medium skin took 33 of the 79 votes, or 41.8%. Light (correct answer) had 25 or 31.6%. Dark had 21 votes or 26.6%.

Hairstyle also included an option for Other. This question’s responses were little more divided than others so far! Long straight was the most popular at 16 of 80 responses, or 20%. The correct answer of long curly was the second most popular, with 13 votes. Medium length curly got 11 votes, medium length textured got 8, short textured got 7, long textured and short curly tied with 6, medium straight and short straight and pixie cut tied with 4, and Kit’s wig length had 1.

The question about what pet Kira will have was a little tricky. Kira doesn’t have any pets in her collection, just the koala, which is a wild animal. I would have accepted koala or even just marsupial as correct, but nobody guessed either. (I would have marked “bear” wrong because koalas are not actually bears although they are very bear-like in appearance.) But since wild animals are not pets, and she technically doesn’t have any companion animals who live with her and appear in her collection, I will also accept “no pets” as a correct answer. 6 of you, or 7.5%, got this one right.

Reptile was the most popular answer at 29 votes, or 36.2%. I’m with you all! I was really hoping we’d finally get a GOTY with maybe a gecko or bearded dragon. Bird was next at 13 votes, cat at 11 votes, rabbit at 7 votes, no pet tied with dog at 6 votes, small rodent at 4. Two of you wrote in a vote for ferret, 1 for both a cat and a dog, 1 for a horse, 1 for mini donkey.

Number of siblings is the next question. Out of 80 responses, 37 of you chose 2 siblings, 17 voters chose 1 sibling, 16 of you chose the correct answer of 0, 7 of you chose 3 siblings, and 3 of you chose 4 siblings.

This was the one detail I couldn’t be sure about with the information that’s out there, so a big thank you to @themermaidsunshine who very kindly verified to me that Kira does not, in fact, have siblings.

This question was about her parents. Kira is being raised by her mother, and her dad passed away prior to her story, so single mother is the correct answer. That got 10 votes or 12.8% of the total. The most popular was one mother & one father with 28 votes. Two mothers got 16 votes, raised by extended grandparents/aunts/uncles/ other extended family got 11 votes, two fathers got 6, single father got 3, and with 1 vote apiece were the custom responses of multi-generational household, adopted by foster parents, adoptive parents, and “this is like an ideal scenario so I don’t really think it’s gonna happen but ideally her parents divorced when she was very little because one of them realized they were gay and that parent remarried and she lives with her remarried parent and stepparent” which was given by an anonymous respondent. (Good guess!)

Next is what state she’ll live in. While her story takes place almost entirely in Australia, Kira is American and her story begins in the US. There were a lot of answers to this, but the correct answer of Michigan only got 2 votes, or 2.7%. The most popular was Minnesota with 6 votes or 8.2%.

The rest are basically essay questions rather than multiple choice, so no more charts.

Question 10: Will she have a disability?

This one got some very interesting responses! 45 of you, or a little over half, guessed correctly that she will not have a specifically named disability. Question 11: What will be the main theme of her story?

The most popular response was leaving this one blank, which 8 of you did. Nobody mentioned anything about traveling to Australia or the topic of bushfires.

But there were lots of very good answers anyway. 4 people guessed sports or e-sports. 5 guessed the Black Lives Matter movement, and 6 guessed politics or other current events.

I’ll mark correct the responses that mentioned animals, climate change/environment, or travel in any way, since those are all major themes in Kira’s books. Several of you did that:

Something something something dancer. But also STEM. Maybe she's like really into environmental science but also contemporary dance. And she's campaigning to get her neighborhood to go greener and she participates in a climate strike and then dancing stuff. And maybe her older sibling is starting college and she has to deal with them moving out. Her best friend will be a PoC for Diversity but the doll will be white. - anonymous

Dealing with the changing lifestyle brought about by Covid-19 in 2021 as well as the LGBT and racial problems still heavily prevalent today. I think she's probably an African American girl from the St. Louis area with her two mothers ( one a lesbian and one bisexual.) - @americangirlmom

There were so many creative answers to this! I wish they were all for sure going to be made. Here are a few that I liked:

Lots of glitter. Ballet bar and warm-up outfits (the typical smattering of dance stuff they reproduce every 2 years or so). Tiny biology set (books? itty-bitty solar panels?). Succulents? Binoculars. TINY CHACO SANDALS. Hiking set, but make it pink. Her big-ticket item's going to be, like, an off-the-grid tiny house or something. The dog should be a larger dog like a German Shepherd or Lab or Other Outdoor Dog and it will have a tiny doggy backpack. (My incorrect speculation is really making me want an environmentalist/another archaeology doll) - anonymous

My JLY34, Lena, has been in my collection for over a decade at this point. Her hair is getting quite frizzy and thinned out, but I’d feel bad replacing her wig- she’s not a very common doll, and I’m not too fond of any of the auburn or brown wigs that exist out there on places like etsy. So for now she exists in my collection as is. Though I’d love to potentially give her a makeover someday!

I did a bit of restoring on my #34, Renata, this week. I've been wanting to do a boil wash on her since I got her, but a boil wash is a bit beyond my normal capabilities, so I had to wait for a good day (and a cool day, because this summer has been hot as hell).

Her hair was extremely crunchy, dull, and split at the ends, all the usual things that go wrong when doll hair is damaged.

So I did the whole boiling process and then I set the ends of her hair into curlers so that I'd get the nice curling-under action that her hair was originally supposed to have.

I wasn't sure the curlers would work, since I've never tried it before. When I first put them in, I had this sinking feeling they might be too big and the result would look ridiculous, but then the next day--

The curlers came out and the results were exactly what I wanted! Her hair looks so much better. Every time I saw another picture of a 34, I was always jealous of how nice their hair looked -- I don't think I'll have that issue anymore!

Meet Renata, the newest member of my doll collection! She's a JLY 34 and I absolutely adore her. She brings the number of modern dolls I have without brown/black hair up to a whopping three (out of fourteen), but she does add yet another brown eyed doll to the collection!

Noc Kupały/Noc Świętojańska

Happy midsummer! I think it would be odd of me not to post something for today! 😉 Here is Lena celebrating Kupala Night, by preparing to set her wreath afloat down the river. Kupala Night is a traditional slavic celebration of the solstice. In west-slavic countries Kupala Night is celebrated on the solstice, while in east-slavic countries, it is celebrated on the 6th-7th of July. I hope you have a blessed midsummer!
