Celebrity campaign for Somalia has raised almost $2 million to relieve famine

A viral aid campaign led by actor Ben Stiller, Colin Kaepernick and others has raised nearly $2 million for famine-stricken Somalia in just five days.

The movement began after French social media celebrity Jérôme Jarre, concerned about a lack of media coverage surrounding the famine Somalia is currently experiencing, put out a call to action to his followers.

After figuring out that there is only one airline currently making commercial flights to Somalia — Turkish Airlines — Jarre set a seemingly impossible goal: What if, using the hashtag #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia, his fans could get the company to respond?

Soon Stiller and other social media influencers joined in, posting short videos on their respective platforms appealing to the airline to let the initiative use one of their cargo planes to deliver supplies.

To their surprise, the airline didn't just accept — it offered to make multiple trips. Read more (3/21/17 11:40 AM)

News: Somalia, French Guy and Turkish Airlines

Somalia is a nation in the horn of Africa right beside Ethiopia suffering from what the UN calls “the biggest humanitarian crisis since WW2″ , with over 6 million people in need of food and water -- half of the nation is in danger. The famine is ranked as one of the worse, beating of the 2011 Somalian famine, in which a quarter million people died from. Many countries such as Canada have pledge aid to the nation, as well as social media stars. Jérôme Jarre, a French comedian, has pledge over a million in assistance (food and clean water) for the people suffering. Inspired by a BBC article depicting the life-threatening crisis, Jarre constructed a relief plan that is using A Turkish Airline cargo ship plus a carrier with spare cargo room to transport over a million dollars worth of food and water to Somalia.

A Glimpse Of Hope

in life, there will be at least one obstacle you run into. if you’re unlucky, multiple. we live in a world where money and power are the keys to success, nothing less. what about love? compassion? creative minds, those driven to change something from bad to good? happiness? fearfulness? bravery?

the world is a hot mess right now, it has been for a while. although its hard to see hope where it cannot be found, there are little bits of it hidden throughout our daily lives. for instance: a bunch of people with platforms got together and started a movement to help millions of people who are currently suffering in their home country. no food, no water, no supplies. and here i am sitting in my family home in a country where i feel safe. free health care, clean water. i work and get little back but i can still afford medicine and dinner while being able to have a life. i complain about shit all the time and its moments like these when i have to sit down and have a talk with myself to realize that i’m doing pretty alright. my life is gold compared to so many others who don’t even have the basic needs such as food and water. i take advantage of all that, i’m guilty of that and i know it. and so are you. 

i complain about being broke all the time but my wallet isn’t that empty. even a little goes a long way. i donated. help if you can, even if its a few dollars. if you can’t, share the link with your friends and family. there is so much more we need to work on but this is one of the better days we have seen
