Just a Little Bit of Your Heart (JALBOYH)
Harry wrote JALBOYH for Ariana Grande, he first performed on his first solo tour. It is about loving someone who is not fully committed to the singer. Harry has performed 89 of its total 99 live performances, starting with this one in September 2017:
youtube
Ariana told J-14 she almost didn't record it because Harry's demo was so good and his was her favourite version:
âI was more intimidated because he recorded a demo for me so I could learn the song. I was like, "I don't know if I wanna touch this song.'
When was it written
To MTV Ariana said:
He was just visiting the studio and (producers) Savan (Kotecha) and Johan (Carlsson) were like 'Hey do you wanna write a song for Ariana?' and he was like 'Oh sure!'" "He went into the other room and they were writing for a while and I remember when I heard it I was like 'Wow that's a really strong verse, that's really beautifulâ
Savan Kotecha and Max Martin produced Arianaâs album, 'My Everything', which was recorded at Conway Studios September 2013 to March 2014. Savan wrote WMYB and was close with Harry.
In another interview Ariana said it was written in Los Angeles when Harry had dates town. (6:50). 1D didn't have L.A. tour dates then. However he was in L.A. 20 February - 18 March 2014. Ariana was at Conway Studios the first week of that:
If Max Martin at Conway Studios 15-22 February 2014 sounds familiar, it should. Thatâs the who, where and when Style, I Know Places and Shake it Off were recorded (with another Johan). Ari and Taylor were at the same studio at the same time. Max Martin worked on both projects and Scott Borchetta managed them both. Taylor also would have played Style for Harry as a courtesy before leaving the studio with Max. Other artists also shared Conway during 1989.
In the 2014 timeline, within a fortnight: Harry was spotted backstage at Red, he broke up with Kendall, left Brits after party early to fly straight to LA the next morning, 20 February. Visited Conway Studios where Taylor was recording Shake it Off! Wrote this song. Then on on 25 February 2014 he got the anatomical heart tattoo and incorporated HSA Publishing. As this was his first commercial work outside 1D it was presumably to give Ariana this song. No wonder he has said it is special and his favourite song he gave away.
(Harry was also in LA 20 January, Ari and Taylor were also in Conway then, it could have been 20 January and I Know Places, I think Feb because of HSA's incorporation)
Harry was there when Ariana recorded it:
Ariana describes Harryâs energy in the studio: âGreat! Very funny, very silly, very sweet, very professional, and never too serious. Like I would be singing in the booth and I would cut a vocal, and he would be like, âOh that was terrible, you should try it again,â but he was like joking. He was very nice, very very sweet guy.â
Taylor saw Ariana perform it at the Grammys. The screens showed Harryâs name. Ariana hugged Taylor after she performed OOTW.
On 25 September 2015 (Interesting date) Ariana performed it with Coldplay, Chris Martin said "This is a song written by the most handsome man in the world, Harry Styles, he couldn't be here so asked we perform it for you". Ariana Tweeted and Coldplay replied "beautiful song", which Harry liked. As publisher he approved that.
When meeting fans in 2017 Ariana also told fans it was about a relationship that wasnât known and winked when asked if it was about Taylor. Tumblr post from a person there and one with screenshot of it. Thank you @womanexile
Lyrics
I don't ever ask you where you've been And I don't feel the need to Know who you're with I can't even think straight but I can tell That you were just with her
This verse establishes that Harry is writing about someone in an open relationship. The song is about another partner.
This verse is similar to the Taylor's line in:
Style âI say, "I heard, oh / That you've been out and about with some other girl, some other girl" / He says, "What you heard is true, but I / Can't stop thinkin' 'bout you and I" / I said, "I've been there too a few times" and
Tis the Damn Season "If I wanted to know who you were hanging with While I was gone I would have asked you"
And I'll still be a fool, I'm a fool for you
This line is very reminiscent of One Direction's Fool's Gold, which Harry wrote 6 months later. "I've let you use me from the day that we first met / But I'm not done yet / Falling for your fool's gold"
In both JALBOYH and Fool's Gold Harry sees his love is not reciprocated but he is a fool who loves them anyway. Harry was also a fool for love in Sunflower and Boyfriends. More on fool.
ChorusJust a little bit of your heart x2 Just a little bit of your heart is all I want Just a little bit of your heart x2 Just a little bit is all I'm asking for
This chorus is heartbreaking, here he settles for the smallest affection from someone in an open or not committed relationship.
A very similar idea is in Music For a Sushi Restaurant's "If the stars were edible / And our hearts were never full / Could we live with just a taste?"
Songs can be about more than they seem, (an open relationship), I think JALBOYH, Fools Gold and MFASR could all be about someone with different priorities who doesn't want to settle down and commit.
I don't ever tell you how I really feel 'Cause I can't find the words to say what I mean And nothing's ever easy That's what they say I know I'm not your only
Not communicating with his muse is a theme in Harry's work, and something he has said in interviews is that it's easier to say something in song:
MMITH "We don't talk about it / It's something we don't do".
Sign of the Times "We don't talk enough / We should open up / Before it's all too much"
Talk "Don't ask me to talk about / I don't wanna talk at all (hey)"
If I could fly is a nice juxtaposition, also written with Johan Carlson a year later, when he opened up.
Things are not easy, or complicated in Lay Down "Even though it's complicated / We were never meant to make it this time" and Complicated Freak.
But I'll still be a fool 'Cause I'm a fool for you I know I'm not your only But at least I'm one I heard a little love is better than none
In the last verse Harry resigns himself to not being his loves only, or priority but can't let it go.

Year-End Poll #65: 2014
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, John Legend, Iggy Azalea, OneRepublic, Jason Derulo, Magic!, Meghan Trainor, Ariana Grande, Sam Smith. End description]
More information about this blog here
As mentioned in the previous poll, we're now seeing streaming services like Spotify taking over music consumption. Much like how Billboard had to adapt to individual retail sales in the 1950's, MTV rotation in the 1980's, Nielsen SoundScan in the 1990's, and YouTube views in the early 2010's, Spotify streams are now going to be incorporated more into Billboard's charts, with their album charts adapting to this shift in late 2014.
But before we welcome in another chart, 2014 is the year we'll also have to say goodbye to one. It feels like just yesterday we were talking about the rise of the ringtone. But as musical ringtones were starting to fall out of favor in the general public (with streaming people were growing accustomed to no longer having to pay 99 cents for a song -- they weren't going to pay 2 dollars for a snippet of one), Billboard's ringtone charts were retired in 2014, with Taylor Swift's Shake It Off as the final number 1 ringtone in America.
In 2014, we're seeing the continuing rise of retro-inspired production, with the neo soul of Pharrell Williams' Happy, the doo-wop pastiche of Meghan Trainor's All About That Bass, and the funk elements of Ariana Grande's Problem. And with Jason Derulo's Talk Dirty sampling its hook from Balkan Beat Box's Hermetico, it seems like this was a pretty good year for brass samples. Also fun fact about Happy, apparently that song was Pharrell Williams' tenth attempt at writing a song for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. Sadly, we will never hear those other 9 versions. Or else I would have put all of them on this poll.
Speaking of musical influence, we're also starting to see trap starting to rise in mainstream popularity. Trap music is a style of rap originating out of the southern hip-hop scene, notable for its 808 drums, snares, and triple-timed hi-hats. The origins of the style can be traced back to the 1990's during the rise of southern rap, with many trap acts coming out of Atlanta and Memphis. In fact one of the guest rappers on today's poll, Juicy J on Katy Perry's Dark Horse, is one of the pioneers of this style with his group, Three 6 Mafia. While Three 6 Mafia is associated with a variety of subgenres (gangster rap, horrorcore, crunk, etc), the trajectory of trap music can often be traced back to them. I don't usually give out homework on these polls, so instead I will just strongly suggest that you check out Mystic Stylez if you haven't already. We'll have to wait a few years until we see the explosive growth of the modern trap movement in the mainstream.

Todrick Hall
Todrick Hall (born April 4, 1985) is an American singer, songwriter, actor, director, choreographer and YouTuber. He first gained national attention on the 9th season of the reality singing competition American Idol, where he made it to the semi-finals. Following this, he amassed a following on YouTube with multiple viral videos including original songs, parodies, and skits. A documentary series about his video-making process titled Todrick aired on MTV in 2015.
Starting with season 8, Hall became a resident choreographer on RuPaul's Drag Race, and occasional judge. From 2016 to 2017, Hall starred as Lola in Kinky Boots on Broadway. Later in 2017, he began appearances as Billy Flynn in Chicago on Broadway and the West End.
As a singer-songwriter he has released three studio albums, including the visual albums Straight Outta Oz (2016) and Forbidden (2018).
Early life

He knew he was different, he liked playing with dolls, and worried if they would still accept him if he turned out to be one of those gay people they made fun of on television. Hall began studying ballet at nine-years-old, and later worked with Fantasia in The Color Purple. He came out as gay to his family when he was fifteen; it took them a few years to accept. He also appeared in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and performed with Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
Career
2009â2010:Â American Idol
On August 24, 2009, Hall auditioned to the ninth season of American Idol in Dallas, Texas. He sang a self-composed song mentioning the judges â Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, and guest judge Joe Jonas â to plead his case for inclusion in the program. All four judges approved of his participation; he went into Hollywood week and eventually the semi-finals. In the Top 24, he sang Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and in the Top 20, he performed Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It". He was eliminated in the Top 16 on 11 March 2010 after his rendition of Queen's "Somebody to Love;" he was one of four contestants eliminated in that round, and thus ranked between 13th and 16th overall.
2011â2013: Career growth and YouTube fame
Hall joined YouTube on May 27, 2006, and posted his first video to the site, a performance of "It's Hard to Say Goodbye", in 2008. In following years, his audience has grown considerably: as of June, 2019, Hall currently has 3.1 million subscribers on YouTube, and as of March 2018, his videos have been viewed 531.9 million times. Hall's videos include several of his own original songs and music videos, choreographed flash mobs for Ariana Grande and Beyoncé performed in an actual Target store, (the latter of which Beyoncé personally recognized Hall for), musical collaborations with Pentatonix, and personal updates.
In May 2011, he released a video audition for the third season of Glee titled "I Wanna Be on Glee", for possible inclusion in the show. Though the video was popular, Hall was not cast in the program. In November 2013, Virgin America produced a pop-music safety video directed by Jon M. Chu with music by Jean-Yves Decornet. Hall wrote the song and lyrics and starred in the video.
In December 2013, Hall released a Christmas album entitled Dear Santa, with covers of "This Christmas" and "Sleigh Bells", produced by wiidope as well as original songs "So Cold" and "SplitsOnXmasTrees".
2014â2015: Pop Star High and Todrick docuseries

The series portrays and parodies pop stars like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Ne-Yo, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Tyga, and draws on the tropes of high school comedy movies. The soundtrack for the series was released on April 1, 2014.
On October 22, 2014, MTV announced Todrick, a docuseries following Hall, would premiere in 2015. On 20 December 2014, Hall produced and appeared in a commercial for the series and featured other celebrities' holiday wishes. Eight episodes of the docuseries were ordered and aired throughout 2015. The soundtrack for the show was released on October 13, 2015.
In October 2015, he was picked as Elvis Duran's Artist of the Month and was featured on NBC's Today show hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb and broadcast nationally where he performed live his single "Wind It Up".

The tour originally ran between July 7, and August 12, 2016 in the United States and Canada.

The Straight Outta Oz Tour was revived in 2017 and ran between March 30, and June 5, in various North American, European, and Australian locations. It was accompanied by an expanded deluxe edition that included songs that were featured on the tour but not on the original version of the album. Additionally, the album included an extended version and new video for "Wrong Bitch" featuring Bob the Drag Queen, and a rerecorded version of Todrick's previous single "Low" featuring RuPaul.
In August 2017, he had a cameo as a back-up dancer in the music video for Taylor Swift's song, "Look What You Made Me Do".
From November 30, 2017, to January 14, 2018, played Billy Flynn in a limited engagement role in Chicago. During his tenure, the show had its best-grossing week in its 21-year Broadway history.

Becky G on Hosting the MTV EMAs, Working With J-Hope: âMusic Is a Universal Languageâ
The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) have been a major platform for stars on the precipice of a career launch, among them Katy Perry, who hosted in 2008, Bebe Rexha (2016), Rita Ora (2017) and Hailee Steinfeld (2018). For the 2019 show, broadcasting live from Seville, Spain on Nov. 3, Becky G will handle emcee duties. The singer and actress is also nominated in the best pop category alongside Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande, Halsey, Shawn Mendes and the Jonas Brothers.
Since coming onto the scene as a 14-year-old nearly a decade ago, Becky G has made cross-cultural collaborations her calling card. Among them: the viral sensation âChicken Noodle Soupâ with K-Pop artist J-Hope, as well as âComo Noâ by Akon. Indeed, Becky G readily admits that âitâs been a minuteâ since she worked in the English market.
Becky put her mainstream efforts on hold in 2014 on the heels of such hit records as âShowerâ and âCanât Stop Dancinâ in order to embrace her Latino roots and immerse herself fully into such genres as Latin pop and reggaeton. It was then that she started collaborating with artists like Pitbull, Maluma, Natti Natasha, and C Tangana, yielding smash hits that catapulted the Mexican-American artist into a worldwide sensation.
Following news of her EMAs gig, Becky spoke with Variety about her latest career milestones.
When did the EMAs hosting offer come in and what was your reaction?
It was pretty recent. There were already talks about my participation in the show, and once the ideas were thrown out, they said, âWhy donât we just have Becky host?â I was geeked out. It was insane.
Are you feeling nervous about the task at hand?
I donât want to sound too big headed, but I started working in the industry at a very young age, and Iâve had the pleasure of being a part of lots of cool award shows. So I feel that a lot of the opportunities Iâve had in the past have prepared me little by little for what is going to be one of my biggest experiences yet. I feel pretty level headed; pretty excited; pretty prepared.
What are you doing to get ready for such a big moment?
There is a lot of responsibility that comes with it: memorizing lines, back-up plans⊠we are arriving a couple days earlier to be able to work out the whole show, and itâs going to be really awesome. The nerves arenât as present, thereâs more excitement.
Youâre also nominated for best pop?
Yes! Total freakout moment! I had no idea that was coming. Iâve been living in the Latin World for the last five years so I hadnât seen my name side by side with Anglo artists in a minute like Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, so thatâs pretty rad.
Youâre getting your feet wet with other types of genres as well. Tell us about your collaboration with BTSâ J-Hope and the viral sensation that is âChicken Noodle Soup.â
I will give all the credit to J-Hope on this. He was the one that found me; He had the song; He had been wanting to release it before he had even brought it to me and my team. Being a part of this whole Latin movement, itâs very similar to whatâs happening with K-Pop. Itâs taking over, and itâs a movement that is really showing the world that music is a universal language.
Speaking of universal languages, what do you think it is about Latin beats that attracts those in other genres like pop, R&B and hip-hop?
It goes back to music being for everybody. One thing that I love so much about my Latino culture is that we love sharing everything â our music, our food, we are like family. People can really feel that our music is meant to be enjoyed in the masses, whether itâs family parties, a club, concerts or festivals.
At the EMAs, youâll be representing Mexican-Americans and Latinos. What impact do you expect it to have?
This is massive. Itâs a huge opportunity for me to maybe reintroduce myself to English-speaking audiences: âThis is who I am now, this is what I am up to.â Also itâs putting myself in a different light. Many people have seen me as an actress, as a singer, as a rapper, and now theyâll have seen me as a host.

[!]Â RED VELVET AREN'T WORRIED ABOUT BREAKING RECORDS â THEY JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN
AHEAD OF THE FINAL STOP OF THEIR U.S. TOUR, THE K-POP GIRL GROUP TALK TOURING, ARIANA GRANDE, AND THEIR PERSONAL 2019 GOALS
Less than two full months into 2019, and the pure deluge of Korean acts who have announced their plans to tour in the U.S. this year is equal parts exciting and overwhelming. On one hand, it's unprecedented and proves just how much global interest there is in K-pop, which up until now has been considered a very niche medium. But the stats don't lie: K-pop garnered over 5.3 billion tweets last year, and its passionate fans continue to rally for their faves (or, biases) on social media â trending hashtags, dominating the Billboard Social 50 chart, and showing their support on apps like Korea's V Live.
So, logically speaking, of course now is the perfect time for these artists to come to the U.S. and build off this enthusiasm for a more diverse musical landscape.
Enter Red Velvet, a dynamic quintet who have been serving up their distinct flavors with powerhouse vocals, tight vocal harmonies, and boundless personality since their debut in 2014. Members Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri (who officially joined the group in 2015) kicked off the North American leg of their Redmare world tour earlier this month, and with stops across the U.S. and Canada â including an emotional night in Toronto, vocalist Wendy's hometown â Red Velvet have accomplished something no other K-pop girl group has since 2016. Not to mention, a U.S. tour is a major flex for any foreign act.
But for Red Velvet, bringing Redmare halfway across the world wasn't about setting records or making history; it was about their fans (affectionately called ReVeluvs).
"I love that we're able to be a little closer to our fans in a more intimate setting," Joy told MTV News, via an interpreter, ahead of their Newark concert last week. It's that closeness that makes the experience of performing for crowds in the U.S. a bit different for Red Velvet. Much of the Redmare set is dedicated to their cheerier, quirkier pop songs, like âRussian Roulette," "Happiness," and the anthemic "Power Up!" â which, according to Seulgi, is the most fun to perform live for Western audiences.
"The fans really get into it, and they're dancing along with us," she said. "Some people are so energetic and so passionate about it that they're wearing banana costumes. That makes us laugh."
For context, people wearing banana costumes and singing along to the group's incredibly catchy hook of "ba-banana ba-ba-banana-nana" is the general vibe of a Red Velvet concert. The group's vivid pop aesthetic is vibrantly on display, both in their colorful performance and in the VCRs (or short vignettes) that break up the set â there is, in fact, a narrative to Redmare and it involves a robot named RĂȘve who kidnaps the girls and takes them to a wacky amusement park where they get hunted by animal poachers, concoct a potion that transforms half the group into giants and shrinks the others, and tour a creepy haunted house in designer threads.
But that unexpectedness is built into the group's DNA; Red signals their pop side â bursts of color, sounds, and buoyant concepts â while Velvet shows off R&B flavor â these songs are moodier and more sensual, like last year's knockout, "Bad Boy." And while Redmare leans heavily on the group's Red material, the show's final act goes full Velvetwith "Bad Boy," "Peek-A-Boo," and "Really Bad Boy" â a trio of songs with lush melodies and slick girl-crush vibes.
When asked if there are any major differences between the crowds in the U.S. and in their native Korea, they remarked that their fans bring a lot of energy, regardless of where they're from â but that it's dispersed in different ways. "In America, they're really energetic, they're hyped up," Joy said. "In Korea, they sing along with us. They're fan-chanting, and things like that."
"I think it's because they understand Korean, like back at home they know what we're saying," Wendy added. "But here [in the U.S.], fans just feel the music with their whole body. It's intense."
While language barriers can hardly stop the most dedicated fans from participating in the fan chants (a staple of K-pop), Red Velvet did add the English-language versions of "Bad Boy" and "Really Bad Boy" â their first time performing the latter live â to their Redmare set especially for their North American fans. "I hope our fans see our energy on stage," said Wendy. "And our hard work," adding that their goal is to make their fans happy.
Of course, in between stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Newark, the group has made sure to make themselves happy, too. Seulgi has been sightseeing and eating delicious food; Joy has been checking in on her puppy, Haenim ("It means sunshine," she said), back in Korea; and Yeri has been writing a lot of songs and listening to a lot of Ariana Grande's Thank U, Next. Her favorites so far? "7 Rings," "NASA," and "Ghostin'." In fact, Yeri's Ari obsession has even inspired Joy to reminisce on their pre-debut days â something she's been doing a lot of in light of their tour.
"I've been reminiscing on my trainee days when we used to practice and train for this group," Joy said. "And the album that really gave me a lot of strength, that I listened to a lot was Ariana Grande's Yours Truly. So even now I play it and think back on those memories."
Joy isn't the only one reflecting on Red Velvet's journey â and their future. In 2019, leader Irene says that she "wants do more things that I enjoy and find pleasure in." That emphasis on self-care and self-improvement is a big one for everyone in the group. Joy wants to show more of herself to the fans; Seulgi wants to be "more diligent and hard-working," adding, "In 2018, there were things that I wanted to do, but wasn't able to fulfill those goals. So I want to take more action this year." Meanwhile, Wendy wants to "be better me in everything, in career and just as myself."
And then there's Yeri, the youngest member, who puts all of the group's diligence into perspective: "I just want to live a fun life and enjoy it."
Because not every K-pop group wants to take the U.S. by storm and smash records. Sometimes, they just want to bring music to their fans and enjoy the crazy ride. And doesn't that sound a lot more fun?

KEEP 'CALM': TAYLOR SWIFT WILL PERFORM AT THE 2019 VMAS ARE YOU READY FOR IT?
MADELINE ROTH August 7, 2019
The 2019 VMAs just got a little more lovely.
Three days after the release of her seventh album, Lover, Taylor Swift will hit the MTV stage for her first VMA performance in four years. The pop star is nominated for a whopping 10 awards at this year's show, split between her whimsical "ME!" and colorful "You Need to Calm Down" videos. That places her at the front of the pack, tied with fellow 10-time 2019 nominee and pop titan, Ariana Grande.
While Swift is keeping the details of her latest VMA moment thoroughly under wraps (apart from it being a "world premiere performance"), her history of VMA domination means it'll certainly be a must-see spectacle. She made her debut at the 2008 awards show, where she co-hosted the red carpet pre-show and introduced Jonas Brothers's "Lovebug" performance. The following year, she rolled into the show on a Cinderella horse carriage, performed "You Belong to Me" in the New York City subway, and took home her first Moon Person trophy for Best Female Video.
In the ensuing years, Swift has performed four more times â "Innocent" in 2010, "We Are Never Getting Back Together" in 2012, "Shake It Off" in 2014, and a surprise mash-up of "The Night Is Still Young" and "Bad Blood" with Nicki Minaj in 2015. She also took home six more trophies, including Video of the Year in 2015, for the squad-starring "Bad Blood."
Clearly, Swift's VMA track record is the stuff of legend â and it's far from over. Catch her performance when the show airs live on Monday, August 26, get voting for your faves now, and look out for more announcements soon!Â
