gotta say it now bc i've been spending so much time in the 5sos fandom where we're all super protective of our creators: I know supporting an author isn't the same. I know cassie doesn't put herself out there in the same way as zillennial musicians. and I know there are things people in the fandom disagree with her on and I'm not here to minimise that.
but everywhere I interact with the fandom and it's been like this for years now, jokes and things about how old we'll be when the series is finished and yeah it's funny to some extent but as someone who knows what pressure to create does to me, who knows how much it dries my creativity, she's on tumblr. she's seeing some of this. and we gotta tow this line and be careful: careful as to how we're treating her and also careful for the sake of fans ourselves--we don't want to be acting in ways that incidentally result in content being delayed and lower quality because she's been burnt out for ages and we're just giving so much pressure to read twp, read tbvotd and read whatever else she'll doubtless come up with after because she loves the shadowhunters world, she always ends up writing more for it even when she says she won't. and aren't we lucky for that? we love the tsc universe. and if we're old by the time it's all finished, that's the result of her loving this universe she created so much that she just kept writing for it. it's a blessing.
and maybe i sound like an aussie who grew up under a rock in the middle of the bush (which I am) saying this but. when my only queer representation was a singular jacqueline wilson book until i was 14 and read malec's story in tmi, when i've never seen another author portray such a diverse range of realistic neurodivergent characters, when i'm a half white poc with grandparents from borneo which is partially in indonesia and magnus is indonesian, I do find in myself some appreciation for her: the author who created a world of characters I see myself in and I do hope she's okay and I want her to recover from burnout, I know how much it sucks, and it still kinda baffles me how she'll share bits and pieces of her mental health experiences (and she's my parents' age!! and a lot more emotionally aware than most gen x's I know which I so appreciate) and we don't, largely, as a fandom, seem to care. like i get we're in a fandom for the characters and stories she created not her, herself, but like ???
I love seeing the artist behind the art they create. I love it when they're human and imperfect and yet we can still see the good in them that they put out to impact the world with, a legacy, and when we see their imperfections and we can acknowledge this all together, acknowledge and come together for the fans who have been hurt by these mistakes, oversights, harmful views, that are mixed in with the good. and I love it when we can still come together after this and be like, I support this creator, I want them to be okay, I want them to keep discovering love and I want to see it in their writing. and this I don't think should only apply to conventionally attractive twentysomething men who sing! maybe i'm biased in the observation that it is usually where I see the most artist support. or maybe it's actually a trend and as feminists, as people who see our dignity in more than being fuckable and more than being Perfect Leaders, we can do better.
and so i don't care when the wicked powers come out. i'll have finished my masters' degree before I finish that book series and hear the rest of kit and ty's story i started reading in high school. but that's okay. if that's what it takes to get a good story. i don't care when we get the final tec book, even though i've got two copies of the other two on my bookcase and don't know if the cover art will even be the same when the third one comes out. because we love pretty timely things but we're not owed them. and I have to say, this isn't completely true. I do care. I do want to know. I do want to experience that joy. but much more than that I want cassie to write at her own pace and I want her to enjoy it and I want her to keep discovering her own creativity and the proof is honestly in the pudding that every artist I've seen decide to do things at their own rate has ended up way more productive than before they decided that. and artists are people after all. it's what makes their art so good and forms the basis for the fandoms we're in. so I hope she knows it's okay to take her time.
#cassandra clare#tsc#tmi#tid#tda#twp#tec#the wicked powers#tlh#kit herondale#ty blackthorn#again. i really don't want to say 'she's perfect and can never hurt people'#but the point of this is that she still deserves to have freedom over her schedule and we can do our part by not being demanding to the#extent that we forget that she's human. that she's poured so much of herself into the characters and worlds she's made and she deserves to#keep looking after herself even when that means we don't get what we want as soon as we want it. we can be a loyal fandom

@shadowcovcn sent a meme: 14, 15, 18
14. Who is an author that inspires you?
oh rip you're asking the jaded english graduate this question lmao. so I'm not sure if I could pinpoint an author who particularly inspires me nowadays — there are obviously authors that I love reading, but I haven't really read fiction widely since graduating and most of the fiction I have drawn inspiration from over the past decade or so is by classic authors. plus storytelling as a medium isn't just restricted to books and I could give you countless examples of other forms of storytelling that inspire me on a daily basis. but speaking strictly about the printed word, big shout out to Jacqueline Wilson books for being a staple of my childhood (i doubt anyone outside of the UK will know of her lmao), and Andrea Levy is also suuuuch a favourite writer of mine. and then a mandatory shout out to Oscar Wilde who inspired the majority of my tagging system on this blog, and is also one of my all-time favourite writers.
15. What do you look for in a rp partner?
someone who's chill lmaooo. that's honestly the biggest thing for me and I think I'm lucky because I feel like I'm a pretty good judge of character? I have a sceptical disposition and I'm strong-minded, so I tend to be rather picky of who I reach out to and befriend on this site and for the most part I haven't really steered wrong. if you're gonna be my rp partner you just have to be OK with the fact that I might not reply to your thread for two years, and that if you pressure me I will either make it three years or I'll drop the thread altogether. also, that I might not talk to you everyday — I don't even talk to some of my rl best friends everyday, I much prefer low-pressure friendships where we can check in every few weeks or months and pick up like no time has passed at all. I just don't have the time or inclination for the crap that comes along with this hellsite anymore, so I stick to people I already know and people who pass my strict vibe test lmao.
passion is also always something I look for too, on a more positive note. I enjoy seeing people passionate about their muses on my dash, it's infectious and there have been so many occasions where I have voluntarily sought out the source material and watched a show/read a book/played a video game solely because a friend of mine or someone on my dash has been talking so passionately about them/it. like it doesn't even matter if I don't write in the same fandom as you, if you get me passionate about a character or universe through the dash powers of osmosis, I'll make an AU especially for you lmao.
18. Are there any AU’s you’d like to explore but haven’t had the chance to yet?
oof this is such a good question and such a tricky one to answer on a multi where I have muses that encompass multiple genres and also where I'm really not shy about writing crossovers lmao. is it a cop-out to just say that I love group verses? not even just verses that involve several people, but creating a group verse with one other person where we just throw different muses from our multis into it like a melting pot? writing two characters against each other is fun of course, but there's something even more fun about throwing ten muses into the same verse and figuring out everyone's connection to each other. or starting with two muses and then building it up slowly until you have a google doc with a dozen muses and a flow chart explaining how they all connect lmao. it just enriches your writing environment and gives you so much more stimuli to play with when you reply to a meme or write a thread. instead of coming up with npcs on the fly, you can bring another muse in to help figure out a plot point or help flesh out an aspect of a relationship or dynamic without it being superficial because you're not just creating a surface-level character to be referenced in one or two replies, but another living, breathing muse with their own life and perspective. I just like everything feeling connected, where every thread has a ripple effect on all of the other future ones you write. also, as someone who likes to push themselves when it comes to writing, it's a wonderful challenge to write three muses within the same thread, I love it.

Oohhh mama I've got the Adam Murray fankid (Cain) on the brain again. Have some thoughts (he's still a massive WIP that is trying to go along with whatever the canon decks at my face next, but here's the recents):
Okay, so, he IS now Evelin's kid too. Idk, it's symbolic and shit, and makes the most sense. They are the only couple in the series among the main characters, I believe, so...
This one's my fave. Making his parents pretty heavy duty Christians. But not like Carrie Christians, and more "We asked God to give us the perfect child and then we adopted you... What do you mean you want to be a boy, that isn't God's way??" Yeah, that. So, obviously having his Biblical knowledge, hating his parents, and not knowing what name to go by, he slaps on Cain for the time being. It's just to piss off his parents by naming himself after a murderer from the bible, because hey he's not getting it permanently, legally changed or anything. Though, he does turn out to really, really like it, unfortunately for his folks. (Also the fact that Cain killed Abel, his brother, and his deadname, Annabelle, has Abel basically in the middle... 👀 layersssss-)
He's basically the type of guy who would literally cry over spilled milk but then go through the most traumatising event known to man and just go "well, that sure was... a day."
I've also given him friends!! (Even though, with the way tmc seems to be going, the alternates might as well kill off all humanity by 2023, when this takes place, BUT–) I haven't thought of names. I considered biblical ones, but I'm not sure about finding ones that really fit deeper than just being from the good ol' bibble. One of them is your typical basic blonde white girl (who, admittedly, kind of starts off as one of those annoying allies. "I want a gay best friend!!" type of thing), the other one's a chubby video game nerd. They're an odd bunch, who somehow bonded over a shared chemistry project :)
This may change with the tmc plot or other stuff, but rn I've decided what makes the most sense is that Cain isn't technically an alternate and is actually just some guy. However, he is immune to alternates, as they can sense SOMETHING off about his vibes.
Mention of (entirely SFW) mpreg under the cut (I mean, any thing I do for any fandom ever is nearly guaranteed to include it, and I apologise for that but it will happen again lol). Don't tap if it ain't your thing.
(I may or may not have started a oneshot based on the latter half of this idea lol...)
So, he was originally starting to develop before Catalyst came out, and I got the whole "he was found in a rubbish bin off the street" thing from a Jacqueline Wilson book I never even read (sue me, okay 💀). But, no, recently I had a better idea: lil Cain was born DURING Catalyst. Essentially, Adam had no idea he was pregnant, his alt transformation triggered labour, he was already in so much pain from said transformation the labour also went completely missed, baby comes out, Adam has no idea what to think or feel. And, this all kinda depends on what Alex is gonna do next, but main idea for now is Adam gives bby to Thatcher and tells him to make sure he's (well, he'd say she because Cain was literally a newborn, but I'll say he because I feel that's right? Idk trans people can confirm or otherwise on that lol) cared for. Thatcher takes him to the hospital where he can be looked over and given to a new family (,:
#tmc#the mandela catelogue#adam murray#evelin miller#thatcher davis#tmc oc#should i give him his own tag?#eh why not#cain morgan#fankid#tw mpreg#cw mpreg#tw birth#cw birth#also been thinking about normal childhood cain#with little to no alternates#and adam and evelin raise him as separated coparents (and sarah and jonah help)#and it's just cute and silly#but that's a post for another time...#anyways him <3

What book are you currently reading? Nothing
What's your favourite movie you saw in theatres this year? Sonic the Hedgehog 2
What do you usually wear? tracksuit pants, hoodie, some nerdy t-shirt (usually anime or gaming)
How tall are you? fuck knows, not like I measure myself
What's your Star Sign? Do you share a birthday with a celebrity or a historical event? My star sign is Sagittarius, and I share a birthday with children's author Jacqueline Wilson, and actor Nat Wolff.
Do you go by your name or a nickname? Cuddles is probably the most consistent nickname I've gone by on this hellsite. (Though some people call me by the first part of my URL so that'd be Werewolf currently, and Lethal prior to 2019)
Did you grow up what you wanted to be when you were a child? Hahahaha no
Are you in a relationship? If not, who is your crush if you have one? Nah, I'm single. Do crushes on fictional characters count? Cause I got plenty of those
What's something you're good at vs something you're bad at? I'm good at rhythm gaming, and apparently bad at knowing when to let a topic go. (I blame the autism)
Dogs or cats? Both
If you draw/write, or create in any way, what's your favourite picture/favourite line/favourite etc. from something you created this year? Haha, I wish I wrote something. I haven't written fanfiction since that terrible clopfic I wrote in 2015.
What's something you would like to create content for? I want to write fanfic for Danganronpa, Persona, Cyberpunk, and a bunch of other fandoms, but I can't seem to bring myself to actually try writing something.
What's something you're currently obsessed with? Cyberpunk
What's something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year? Nothing really comes to mind
What's a hidden talent of yours? Infodumping useless video game trivia that nobody cares about
Are you religious? Not really. I wouldn't go as far as to call myself an atheist, I'm more agnostic than anything else.
What's something you wish to have at this moment? motivation to do things
not tagging anybody, just steal it

You where bare minimum 17 when glee came out. I support you sharing in the age old tradition of insane fangirls keeping there fandoms alive well after its over. But god damn was it a slap in the face to see a blazed glee shipping poll on my dash.
I am 34 this year and was 19/20 when Glee came out. I only became a fan when S2 aired so...yeah about 20.
But you are correct in thinking i'm an insane fangirl. Though less insane compared to a few years ago.
You underestimate my ability to keep fandoms alive. If Tumblr wasn't so American centric I would be non stop talking about random British TV shows such as Johnathan Creek, Spooks, Yes Prime Minister, Bugs (I rediscovered it on ITVx - it broadcast in 1995) and Hustle.
I wonder if there are any Jacqueline Wilson book fans out there...

Week in Review
04/21/2024 – 04/27/2024
Sunday
Week 11 of missing Cipher Academy
Girl Meets Rock good. Seems like the dynamics of the social web are about to shift again, with a rift growing between Takami and Ayame…
Undead Unluck super good…Feng getting stronger is a little scary, because if he ever manages to defeat Fuuko I fear that he’ll want to destroy everything in his pursuit of strength again…but also I want to believe in the connections he’s built with others in this loop…Ichico turning the previous loop’s tragedy on its head to change Nico’s version of Unforgettable is an amazing moment, though I can’t help but feel really sad for Nico regardless…Unforgettable is such a mind crushing ability even without the wife death thing, and I guess the implication here is that he held onto his sanity because of Ichico’s confession but I hope there’s some way for him to better cope with things in this loop…I’ve been really enjoying the fun and cheerful Nico we’ve been seeing so far, and I’d hate for him to just immediately revert back to his crotchety old man self from the last loop.
Monday
Touched some grass and ate some pizza
Tuesday
It’s time to get through some of these library books, the first being The Diamond Girls by Jacqueline Wilson. It’s one that I distinctly remember reading as a kid, and I think I still quite like it, reading today. It’s definitely my favourite of the three Wilson books I’ve read so far – I like the utter and overwhelming chaos that the story immediately throws us into, and even when it gives us some room for respite with the Mary segments, the nature of her living situation is so terrifying that it’s honestly like a horror movie. Dixie’s voice as a narrator is strong and distinct, and I like that you can still tell that she’s a dreamy little kid being put into these stressful situations. Some of the characterization got a little bit tiring, but I did appreciate Wilson subverting some of it by the end, like with Ryan turning out to be a decent-ish guy (still way too old for Rochelle though) and Jude actually becoming friends with the boys. Bruce was a nice character with a heart of gold, but I thought he got a little too attached to the Diamonds a little too quickly…although I guess if I were in his situation I wouldn’t want to turn a blind eye to them either. But immediately proclaiming that you’d like to be some kid’s uncle and stay in her life even though she’s just the estranged daughter of one of your clients is a little weird… Things got wrapped up a little too quickly too, by the end, but I think that’s Wilson’s trademark – just 95% stress and drama before a perfect happy ending, and I can’t really fault her for that.
Ummm Manga Tuesday I guess, which is just in time for the new Chainsaw Man chapter. As usual, I have no thoughts on it – I feel like I won’t be able to tell what’s going on in Part 2 until it ends and I can reread the whole thing from start to finish. Structurally I think I like Part 1 a lot more…
Dandadan good.
Took a break to watch the latest Game Changer episode while I ate lunch and wow I loved the chaos and the way it somehow accurately simulated people going insane in a time loop. All the bribery was fun, as was the contestants starting to say the scripted lines as they were being said by the other presenters. I also love how this continues to spur on the conspiracy theories that the fandom is cooking, and I really do hope there’s some multi-episode foreshadowed twist by the end.
Magilumiere good! Everything’s really coming together now.
One Piece good…I’m nervous for what’s to come.
Wednesday
Ah
Thursday
Very good episode of DunMesh today (with a side of meatballs). Loved all the action, especially with how brutal it could get due to the rules of the dungeon. Kabru doing all his little machinations in his mind was fun, as was him getting the sneak attack on Falin. The Laios and Shuro confrontation was also interesting and revealing of character, but I feel like everything about DunMesh’s writing has been talked to death already so I don’t want to just repeat what I’ve seen on Twitter. My general DunMesh thoughts are just that Ryoko Kui obviously has the writing chops to construct an absolutely original and airtight story, and it’s just fun to be a part of the ride.
Friday
I’ve been in the mood for some TV, and also wanted to pare down my watchlist a little, so I decided to check out Sharp Objects. I’ve heard good things about it and I like small town mystery stories, so I thought I’d like this one too…but the first episode just annoyed me so much that I dropped it right away and read the series synopsis on Wikipedia lmao. Everything about it was just so…screenwriting 101? In the sense that it was like they were checking off bullet points from a How to Write a Screenplay textbook; the tortured protagonist with substance abuse issues returning to their hometown to literally and figuratively confront their past is already well-trod ground as it is, but then every line of dialogue was so basic and boring and acted with all the enthusiasm of a mannequin going through the motions. At first I was wondering if the stock dialogue was some sort of tool being employed by the writers, like a metatextual façade being purposely put up for the sake of the mystery, but no it’s just how it is and I hate it. And judging by the Wikipedia summary that I read, I definitely would’ve hated watching the story progress and the ending, so I’m glad I can just write this one off.
The next show I tried was This is a Robbery, that Netflix documentary about the Gardner Museum art heist. I only got through half of it today, and it’s pretty…standard, I would say. You’ve got the dramatic graphic design and the million interviews and the goofy ass re-enactments of what happened (I know why documentaries do them but it doesn’t stop them from being silly as hell) – just the basic Netflix hyperproduced documentary flair with a dash of being high on its own supply in terms of drama. I thought I would like this documentary because I somewhat enjoy true crime but not the intrusive “accidentally ruin people’s lives due to media attention” kind, so an art heist felt like a nice middle ground between being interesting but still somewhat low stakes…but so far, it’s been pretty slow-moving and meandering and I wish they’d get to the point already.
Saturday
LMAO okay so the reason why This is a Robbery was so meandering and chasing all these dead ends was because there’s no real ending to this story, and I’m so mad that I wasted four hours of my life on this stupid shit. I guess I should’ve looked it up beforehand but I didn’t want to be spoiled…I kind of assumed that if they were making a whole documentary about it, there was going to be an interesting story or narrative to be told…but no, it was just an overproduced publicity stunt to get more attention on the case… They spent so much time interviewing all these people (LITERALLY WHAT WAS THE POINT OF GETTING A WHOLE EX-IRA GUY JUST TO SAY A FEW LINES AND “YEAH IT WASN’T US” BRO ALLOCATE YOUR RESOURCES BETTER PLEASE) and going into the granular details of the case and possible theories about the suspects and their whole organized crime web and I thought it was all going to tie together somehow or be in service of some grand narrative but no!!! This documentary has zero storytelling weight and really shouldn’t have come into existence. All it did was highlight how dogshit the FBI and the police really are. I just wanted some answers and to see how the heist was actually carried out, but I guess real life is rarely as interesting and narratively satisfying as Ocean’s Eleven. I’m giving this thing a 1/10 for annoying me so much and wasting my goddamn time.
Agh…most of the TV shows I’ve watched recently have been duds… This isn’t helping my irrational fear that I won’t find anything that’ll reach Succession’s heights ever again… Granted, I only finished This is a Robbery because I thought there’d be some sort of payoff by the end, but I need to be more discerning with which recommendations I should actually follow through on in the future.

Thank you so much for tagging me @weltato and @androgynous-sack-of-flesh-3 (I’m sorry it took me so long to do this 😅).
Name(s): My actual name is Katie, though my sister’s come up with loads of nicknames for me like Koi and Giroon (long story, maybe for a different post) but on Tumblr most people call me Marvel and I love it :)
Pronouns: She/her
Star sign: Gemini, and I swear I’m not two-faced, really
Number of siblings: One, my amazing older sister (she’s about six and a half years older than me and she’s one of my best friends)
Number of pets: I had two dogs a while ago but the older one - Archie - sadly died in his sleep late last year, but I still have my fluffy son Micheal, he’s a chihuahua and he’s the sweetest little boy, he’s around seven now and I love him
Fandoms: Starkid, Marvel, Chucky, Glee and Good Omens
Favourite colour: Since I was little I’ve always gone with these ones - pink, purple and blue (I realised I was bi about two years ago and nearly burst out laughing when I saw the flag because of the irony and accidental foreshadowing - baby me knew, way before she knew she was bi, gotta love her for that)
Favourite song: That changes all the time but currently I’ve been listening to Spice Up Your Life a lot, it really gets me pumped up and ready to take on anything
Favourite author: Neil Gaiman, though I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Jacqueline Wilson
Hobbies: Acting, singing, reading and writing fanfiction, binge-watching sitcoms (Friends, Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, The Good Place and most recently Glee), thinking about my favourite characters and thinking about Greek mythology
Favourite fic type: I really want to say fluff/humour but recently I’ve been loving Dark fics where a character goes evil
Favourite holiday: In December I live and breathe Christmas, and I’ve never been allowed to celebrate Halloween, so there’s your answer 😂
Do you have any partner(s): I have been single since birth - alas I shall have to remain admiring middle-aged celebrities and fictional characters from afar 😂
Fun facts about you: I learnt to read from Horrid Henry books, I can swim 150 metres, I had a disastrous YouTube channel as a kid and I met Prince Harry when I was younger (before Spare, mind you… I shook his hand 😬😳)

- Even though I'm a cat person, I really, really want a dog.
- I actually used to play sports. Because I don't do gendered leagues anymore, I don't play, but I've been looking for mixed/gender-neutral/queer sports teams. Baseball and basketball specifically!
- I started questioning my identity in 2019; I'm no closer to finding a label now than I was then. The difference is, now I don't want a label. I just am. :]

Thinking of taking down my old Harry Potter fanfics
After what with the ableism in The Ink Black Heart as well as the racism and transphobia I no longer want anything to do with any of her works, and that includes Harry Potter. There are way better fantasy books, and way better books, out there. Some recommendations:
Secrets by Jacqueline Wilson: This was one of my favourite novels by her as a kid. The plot follows two girls, one rich, one poor and how they became friends. It gets sad in places, but the ending of the novel is quite optimistic as Treasure, the inner-city girl, gets to stay with her grandmother while India, the rich girl, is seeking a therapist (India is one of a few realistic autistic girls in fiction; readers theorise India has autism. She’s interested in Anne Frank, thinks her teacher’s voice is grating, is quite emotional, has low self-esteem and has difficulty making friends). Do warned there is mentions of physical and emotional abuse in Treasure’s story.
Holes by Louis Sachar: Another favourite novel of mine, the plot centres on a teenage boy, Stanley Yelnats IV, who is sent to a prison camp where inmates are forced to dig holes in the desert every day. There are two stories running alongside, one focusing on the Yelnats Curse and the other about Kissin’ Kate Barlow, a notorious outlaw that terrorised the area surrounding the town of Green Lake, and who spared Stanley’s great-great grandfather. The three stories merge in the climax of the novel, when Stanley breaks the curse by carrying fellow inmate Hector Zeroni up a mountain before they find Kissin’ Kate’s loot. The discovery of the loot and the fall of the Walker Family sees the lake return, the lake having dried up after the death of Katherine’s African-American lover. Two of the three stories take place in the 19th Century, and the book deals with racism in the case of Kissin’ Kate’s backstory.
I don’t plan on buying any more Harry Potter merchandise (Even if it’s Hufflepuff themed). I will take down the five Harry Potter fanfics I wrote on FFN back when I was active in the fandom. The planned Harry Potter fanfics will be left in an abandoned state (I even had a Harry Potter/Titanic crossover fic where the Officers somehow ended up at Hogwarts which is an interesting concept) or redo the concepts for something else. The OC’s I created for the Harry Potter fandom will be completely overhauled as well as renamed. I have a story idea for a novel about a sorcerer who ends up as an officer on a cruise ship (A sorcerer on a ship would be interesting). Some of the characters I created in the Harry Potter fandom will be renamed, as they share the same first or last name as an OC from my original stories. I have the notebooks of each character I created back when I was in the Harry Potter fandom, so thinking of new names will be a challenge.

Author - @deadlysansa
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this! You can find her on ao3!
1. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I think my dialogue, it’s definitely what gets commented on the most. I enjoy writing really fast paced conversations that feel natural and bonus if they’re funny. Like, people don’t take turns to speak in long monologues in real life, why would they do that in fiction?! Dialogue, to me, is the best way to show character dynamics which I think is one of the most important things to the Marauders fandom.
2. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your stories?
I love writing characters doing totally mundane stuff during a scene! I had no idea, but I learned how much more believable i find my stories if, for example, character A simply cannot get a tin open when they’re speaking. Is that niche? I don’t know. But it did surprise me, a lover of fantasy and magical things, that I consider it so important.
3. Do you have any suggestions to help others become a better writer? If so, what they?
I feel pretty bold giving out tips like I know what the hell I’m doing. And this is probably what everyone gets told, but don’t tell your readers, show them. Your description paragraphs shouldn’t feel like a list! I also am a HUGE fan of ambience videos when writing. Like, ‘sitting in a pub with music in the other room and it’s raining’ kind of thing. Whatever scene I’m writing, I’ll pick the appropriate vibe. I feel like I’m in the room with the characters and it gets me in the headspace so well.
4. What do you think makes a good story?
All the best stories are character driven. Character vs. Plot has been debated forever, but I’m stating my case for character all the way. Of course we want a good plot, but if I don’t care about the person involved, then actually, I don’t care about the story. Write somebody to root for, who you know inside out and everyone can relate to, or look up to, or feel like they’re a friend.
5. What is the first book that made you cry?
The first one I remember crying about was My Sister Jodie by Jacqueline Wilson. I was about 10 and completely traumatised. It had such a shock twist and I was so upset about it. Wilson’s books are for kids but they’re all actually pretty twisted. However, no book made me cry like the end of Veronica Roth’s Allegiant…
6. Does writing energise or exhaust you?
Depends. If I’m forcing it, it’s so, so draining. But if I’m on a roll I feel so productive and energised. The best feeling is when you can’t WAIT to carry on writing. Writing emotional scenes can also leave you tired, just from thinking (and relating) so hard.
7. Have you ever gotten reader’s block? If so, what are your tips to overcome it?
Absolutely! I’m probably in one right now. I work a lot which means my free time is so valuable, and it’s hard to let yourself sit down and read when you feel like you have a million things to do. It sucks! Also, sometimes it’s difficult to get into an intense fantasy book (which are my favourite), so I find the cure to be romance novels. Ugh, they’re so feel good and fun. Plus there are ALL the tropes we crave in fanfiction. My favourite is The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker. Bonus, romance novels always make me want to write Jily.
8. Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?
Sure, it’d just be a very different book to a highly emotional person. I mean, most crime novelists haven’t actually been involved with crime, it just fascinates them. So you could apply the same thing to other forms of writing. I like to think it helps, though, feeling your emotions. How many artists and writers convert their pain and joy into fiction? I would like my heartbreak to serve me well somehow!
9. If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
I would tell her that it’s not just a hobby.
10. What was your hardest scene to write?
Listen, all angst scenes. I find writing scenes where characters are miscommunicating really hard. I’m like – how do I hint that they want something without outright thinking it? It personally fries my brain. It can make me go round in circles. (Just like the characters. Poetic justice I guess). I am fully aware that the entirety of TLOL is built on miscommunication at present, so you can see my issue here.
11. What is your favourite childhood book?
I’ll be cliché and say Harry Potter – come on! Percy Jackson a close second. Just another bisexual obsessed with mythology thanks to Riordan.
12. How long does it take you to write a one shot or a chapter of a fic?
I can write a one shot much faster than a chapter. Chapters can take me weeks and weeks, sometimes months! (my darling TLOL readers will attest to that). You’re investing so much in a multi-chapter story. You keep having to check and evaluate what’s already happened in your story and where you’re trying to go. I’m constantly worrying about doing it justice. All the planning helps in the long run, but it is also a massive pain timewise. Plus, I want to give people something to sink their teeth into after waiting so long.
13. A fic that inspires you?
About 10 years ago I read The Life and Times by Jewels5. It was so popular at the time and I loved it so much. Although my opinions on some of their headcanons differed, it didn’t matter. The fic drew me in totally, it was fantastic. I wanted to create that feeling for people.
14. How do you edit your work?
Nothing too fancy. I write the first draft to track the story and add in all the bells and whistles that make it a proper detailed work that flows later, in random bursts. I probably over egg the pudding sometimes, if you know what I mean. I’m a total perfectionist and I find it hard to leave my writing alone!
15. Where does inspiration come from?
Daily life, shows and other books I read. So I suppose from everywhere. Most writers I think always have their minds switched on to inspiration. I’ve got so many random notes in my phones of ideas or just one line of dialogue.
16. Who has been helpful for you as you write for the fandom?
Oh my god, my amazing readers. I can’t explain how supportive they are, it’s insane. Even when I haven’t written for a while, they are checking up on me personally. The sweetest people on earth, guaranteed. Their reviews and comments are so detailed and genuine that they warm my icy little heart. TLOL readers if you’re reading this - I straight up love you! I’ve been through a lot since starting TLOL, and I know this fic — and the readers will always be there. It’s kind of amazing to have that bond with virtual strangers.
17. What is your fav POV to write from?
Lily, hands down. I love, love, LOVE writing her chaotic, perfectionist, anxious and hilarious internal monologue.
18. What is a fic you would love to write but are worried you won’t be able to accomplish it/nervous it wouldn’t work out?
I would like to write a modern AU where the Marauders are public figures of some kind: musicians or actors for example. But I don’t know if I could make it realistic. Maybe I’ll try anyway, after a bit of research.
19. Do you ever self insert in fics?
Don’t we all? I’ve probably given a lot of myself to Marlene in TLOL, with a fun splash of my chaos for Lily. They are independent from me, but it’s nice to have yourself reflected somewhere in your work, I think. It makes it personal, and only really you will see it.
20. What is the story you’re proudest of?
These Lines of Lightning is my baby, of course. It’s been a big undertaking, but I am determined to finish it. For my readers, and for myself. I’ve been in this fandom for over a decade, and this fic is something I’ve wanted to write for all of that time. I’ve held my versions of the characters in my heart and to my delight, other people are connecting with that too. Readers tell me they have laughed out loud reading TLOL, and that’s a pretty damn good feeling.
21. Do you prefer writing canon jily or muggle au?
Canon, because I love writing about Hogwarts life, but I’d like to branch out.
Thank you for the Qs and for organising this massive event! X
Thank you for doing this!

books i actually like
A solid 97% of my ‘book reviews’ (for lack of a better term) are bound to be just me bitching about said book for way too long with way too many expletives, because books I genuinely adore rarely invoke the visceral reaction within me that causes so many of my ‘reviews’ of books I don’t like to be so impassioned and long-winded. Here’s to kicking this dumpster fire off with a little positivity, because that will be little and far in between henceforth.
Harry Potter – J. K. Foul Thing I never understood how someone could appreciate the art and not the artist until Harry Potter. JKR’s dead to me, but the seven original (and only, because I refuse to accept the flaming pile of dog shit that was The Cursed Child as canon) books remain i c o n i c. And you’ll probably witness a LOT of Harry Potter-inspired shitposting on my part if you decide to stick around, because Harry Potter trivia makes up a solid chunk of my personality, and I like to shove my fandoms in other people’s faces. Again, I’m cute like that.
The Diary of a Young Girl – Anne Frank By some odd coincidence, my mum got me Anne Frank’s diary for my 13th birthday, and I always felt like a Super Special Snowflake because of that. Obviously, I can’t relate to being Jewish and in hiding during WWII, but there’s a lot of Anne’s views and thoughts that… resonated with me (ain’t that the most basic-ass description of a book, ever). There’s always the lingering sadness while reading because you know how her story comes to an end, but it’s a book that’s still stuck with me six years later, and for the rest of my mortal life.
The Book Thief – Markus Zusak Why Must I Adore Books That Give Me Naught but Pain: An Autobiography.
Freak the Mighty – Rodman Philbrick Ditto.
Bad Alice – Jean Ure When I first saw the cover, I expected a lighthearted, cheery book. I was very much mistaken. Duffy, a self-proclaimed ‘oddball’, and Alice, another self-proclaimed ‘oddball’, are easily two of my favorite fictional characters, ever. The subject matter is pretty damn dark and rereading the book as an adult is actually kind of scary, but it’s so well-written and engaging and this sounds like I’m an elementary school teacher writing a report card so I’m just gonna stop here.
Tiger Eyes – Judy Blume A true Relic of the angst-riddled phase of my adolescence (I say as if I am not still going through said angst-riddled phase). I’ve been a fan of Judy Blume’s work since one of the girls in my third-grade class bestowed upon me Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing; growing up, I’ve become more detached from Blume’s work but Tiger Eyes is a book that’s never gotten old for me. Davey, the angst-riddled adolescent protagonist, is also stubborn and headstrong and angry and scarily relatable to myself at her age, though under wildly different circumstances.
Changeling – Philippa Gregory I’ve read a couple of Goodreads reviews on the Order of Darkness series, and I’ve garnered that Philippa Gregory fans (Philippans? Philipinos?) are not fans of the series. I can’t vouch for that, given that I’ve only ever read the said series, and I’m admittedly not a fan of books two through four (which is basically every book of the series published to date, exempting the first), but Changeling is a book I liked enough to attempt to handwrite it in a notebook back when I was 12 (I gave up after, like, two sentences because my hand started cramping), and also to try and write a ripoff, featuring an angsty young preteen girl with (short) wavy black hair and eyes like limpid tears (gee, I wonder who that could be) (my eyes are brown, though; I dunno why I wrote the self-insert to be blue-eyed).
The Secret History – Donna Tartt My first foray into dark academia; sadly, reading The Secret History before any other books in the (sub?)genre made every other book pale in comparison. What’s so special about The Secret History for me is that I hate every main character, with passion. Each and every one of them; not just Bunny, but Richard and Henry and Charles and Camilla and Francis and Julian can all go fuck themselves for all I care- but I find them so fascinating. The story and the way it’s written is pretty over-the-top dramatic and my struggling bilingual arse had to look up every tenth word or so, but I adore it with every fibre of my being. Well, the leftover fibres of my being that aren’t simping over Kim Seungmin.
A Series of Unfortunate Events – Lemony Snicket Does this count as the first step of my emo phase? Shoutout to the girl in seventh grade I sat next to for, like, two weeks, who lent me The Wide Window and got me hooked on the series.
Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll This entire book feels so trippy.
The Secret Garden – Frances Hodgson Burnett It’s corny and Everything Works Out Swell for the Goody Guys in the End! in period-typical book fashion, but it got me through many a boring class in the spring of my ninth year of personhood, so I’ll always have a soft spot for Mary and Dickon and Colin and the rest of the gang. It also inspired me to Cultivate, and there are two pretty bougainvillea plants in my garden thanks to one Mary Lennox.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post – Emily M. Danforth Cameron Post: the lesbian baddie we all aspire to be.
Vicky Angel – Jacqueline Wilson Yet another shoutout to my seventh-grade seatmate for lending me her copy of Vicky Angel, which I read under my covers like it was a bloody nudie mag.
A Song of Ice and Fire – George R. R. Martin Where’s Winds of Winter, George?
Turtles All the Way Down – John Green Paper Towns used to be my favorite John Green book until I read Turtles All the Way Down last year. I adore John Green’s writing style (maybe not the #deep #woke #sadboi #middleclass #white #male #cisgender #heterosexual #personalityofabreadroll leads in a solid chunk of his books, though) and okay, so maybe Davis fits all of the above, but my true faves are Aza and Daisy and their dynamic.
To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee I keep calling this ‘HOW to Kill a Mockingbird’ in conversations and it gets really fucking inconvenient.
Coraline – Neil Gaiman I just wish I’d read this sooner than I did.

5, 12 & 13 for ur ask game! (if it's already answered you can ignore this 😂)
5. What’s the fic you’re most proud of?
Probably this one Birdflash Hanahaki fic that I wrote for the DC fandom. It took me like a week and felt like the first 'proper' fanfic I wrote and completed.
(I still feel kind of guilty for not completing my Harry Potter x Spider-Man crossover fic)
12. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about.
I have the outlines of an Assassination Classroom x BNHA x Haikyuu oneshot in my WIPs folder. Don't know if I'll ever complete it though. 😅
13. First fandom you ever wrote for?
I don't know if this counts but when I was in primary school (like back during Year 2 up until Year 6) I was obsessed with Rainbow Magic books and books by the author Jacqueline Wilson so I would write pages and pages of (really embarassing) fanfiction in my diary where I would either join Kirsty and Rachel on their adventures or change the ending of one of Ms Wilson's books (listen, My Sister Jodie broke me. broke me.)
But my first published fanfic was a Harry Potter drabble I wrote like five years ago.
This was fun :)

For the writer asks 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 49 ❤️❤️❤️ sorry it’s lot but i’m curioussss
omg thanks for the numbers boo! i love talking about myself so feel free so send as many numbers as you want lmao
1. things that inspire you
usually the sky and scenery/settings! different variants of the sky give me different moods for writing usually, like sunsets will make me want to write really pensive pieces, or bright neon-lit city skies at night want me want to write something where two people are sitting in an empty basketball court drinking and being nostalgic lol. i’m also inspired by random pieces of dialogue and i’ll file them in my notes app or a new word doc and literally think of a plot and write a fic just so i can use that one line of dialogue. and i’m often inspired too by just scenes that i want to see myself - fanfic is great bc you have the base characters and contexts already written out for you and you can just fill in the gaps with whatever you want. pretty much all of my fics that aren’t requests are just self-indulgent pieces because i want to see a character react in a certain situation lol.
3. name three favorite writers
ahh it was so hard to pick just 3 but i’m going to name some of my fav fanfic writers since the next question is about authors! i’ll keep it to people who have written for voltage since that’s the main focus/fandom of this blog.
@effloresensemn writes the best hue i’ve ever read. this is my absolute favourite hue fic of all time - i actually reread it recently and left a comment, forgetting that i already left a comment 4 years ago. i love her characterisation in everything she writes so much and the tone of her first person povs.
@zacroix gorgeous, gorgeous writing. she writes smut that’s not just hot but also delicate and sensual and intimate. i love all the little details that just add so much depth and her lovely, sultry dialogue.
@drawthecurtainstarttheplay it’s been so long but her work is still some of the best in the fandom imo. the amount of time i spent reading her bmp fics when i was an undergrad is insane - i’m surprised i even graduated. they’re creative and sophisticated and delicious.
anyway as i was writing this i realised i couldn’t choose just 3 so here’s some more
@spyoflove (another classic!) for not just great smut and meltingly cute fluff but also some really fun and silly pieces.
@heartofsnark i don’t even care that much about kbtbb but i read her fics just bc they’re so well written. i found her through her hue fic and i was like shook that she’d never written him before bc it was so good lol.
@duchessmimrose for being not only a prolific but absolutely quality writer, and for reblogging and promoting so many great fics on her blog.
4. name three authors that were influential to your work and tell why
banana yoshimoto is probably my favourite author. i love the pensive tone of her writing, where it’s both detached but incredibly sensitive at the same time. every time i read one of her books i try to emulate the tone to practice but i can never get it. she makes me want to be really experimental and find my own voice. the soft endings of her books make you feel so satisfied but yearning for more at the same time.
i adore michelle moran’s historical fiction. nefertiti, the heretic queen and cleopatra’s daughter? incredible. i love the way she writes clever, bold and charming women without making them mary sues. her worlds are so vibrant and immersive and i love the way she describes the grandeur of places and clothing in particular.
i’m a sucker for historical romance novels (and also modern tbh) so i love lisa kleypas. the chemistry between her characters is always so palpable and i love her heroes (who doesn’t lol). i love the way she writes sex scenes too, they’re super sexy and so intimate and loving and passionate but not explicit? i often try to emulate that style of writing when i have to write nsfw scenes because i don’t always love a super brash/explicit tone.
7. early influences on your writing
that mates dates series of books? and also the truth, dare, kiss or promise series. also jacqueline wilson lol. and then fictionpress stories, ff.net, and fanfic i read on livejournal communities for sure (the latter being probably the reason why i (1) put my stories behind cuts and (2) have all my titles lower case.)
8. what time are you most productive?
4-7am after not having slept lol. also literally right as im falling asleep
49. writing advice
for me, characterisation is #1! i think esp in a fandom like voltage where there are hundreds of characters, it’s so important to have the specific traits of the character you’re choosing to write for/about down to a T and think about how they specifically would react even in an AU or a situation where they wouldn’t normally find themselves. if you need to stretch beyond a situation in which they would reasonably be, make sure you provide enough context/exposition to make it believable and still recognisably that character.
i like to go back and reread substories, epilogues and povs to refresh myself on the character’s dialogue patterns, how they react to certain situations, how that differs from other characters, how they express affection (what sorts of love languages do they gravitate towards), etc.
also write down phrases you like whenever they pop into your head! sometimes it’s a good way to come up with new ideas, or you can always keep them in the bank for future use.
and don’t be afraid to experiment with tone. sometimes it’ll be successful (in terms of audience reception), sometimes it won’t, but it’s always fun to stretch beyond how you’re used to articulating certain ideas.
also make sure to double check for tense inconsistencies. something that peeves me is when pieces swap back and forth between past and present tense by accident! (unless it’s deliberate, like a flashback or something)
