A3! Magazine Interview Translation - B’s-LOG March 2024 [Cover Boys Interview]

The true faces of today’s flourishing young actors

This month’s cover features Hyodo Kumon & Izumida Azami. Azami didn’t have any particular school he wanted to go to. So when Kumon invited over him to Tsukushi High School, the two became senior and junior. The two of them show close they are by walking to and from school and eating lunch on the rooftop together.

We bring you a newly written interview that provides a closer glimpse of their true faces.

Q: Do you have anything that’s been important to you since childhood?

Kumon: Since childhood, huh~? Ah! I thought of something!

Azami: What is it?

Kumon: A home run ball from my favourite baseball player! One day when I was little, I was watching a game at the stadium. While I was cheering as hard as I could, it flew right by me and I caught it.

Azami: Oh, that’s pretty amazin’. That’s not something you can get no matter how many times you go.

Kumon: Exactly! Do you have anything like that, Azami?

Azami: I’ve… always had a cheek brush with me. It’s kinda like my good luck charm.

Kumon: Ooh, right. I know which one you’re talking about!

Azami: Yeah, I’ve used it on you before.

Q: Would you rather be called “cool” or “cute”?

Kumon: I’d definitely be happier being called cool! You’re the same right, Azami!?

Azami: If it’s between those two choices, then I guess it doesn’t really matter what you call me. But I don’t like it when people call me cute to tease me. I hope they'll quit doing that.

Kumon: Now that you mention it, Azuma-san calls you cute every now and then, right? Like it’s so cute and innocent how you immediately get embarrassed whenever you talk about love.

Azami: That’s why I keep tellin’ him to quit it.

Kumon: That doesn’t make you happy?

Azami: Azuma-san is totally just makin’ fun of me.

Kumon: Eh~? I don’t think he’s teasing you though. I think he genuinely means it.

Q: Tell us the truth. Are you actually a scaredy-cat?

Azami: Nah, not really.

Kumon: Me neither! Actually, Azami and I went to a haunted house together the other day!

Azami: Right, Kumon said he wanted to go to one outta nowhere.

Kumon: I thought it’d be interesting so I invited Azami and we went right away. That haunted house was loads of fun!

Azami: Well. I guess I’m glad I went since I could use their makeup as reference.

Kumon: Maybe I’ll go with Summer troupe next time!? Ah, I wonder if they’d come though…

Azami: It wouldn’t hurt to try invitin’ them. …I can’t say for sure that all the members would go though.

Q: How would you confess? In-person, by phone, or by LIME?

Azami: H-HUH!? Who the hell would answer that!!

Kumon: It’s fine, it’s fiiine! By the way, I’d do it face-to-face for sure! I’d like to see their face as I tell them and make sure I'm getting my feelings across properly.

Azami: …I see.

Kumon: C’mon, Azami. How about you?

Azami: I’m not gonna say. Lay off me! Get to the next question already!

Kumon: I sure wonder when we’re gonna get to hear Azami talk about this stuff~.

Q: When you’re on a date… would you hold hands, link arms, or do something else?

Azami: Another question like this? You gotta be kidding me!

Kumon: Now, now. Chill out, Azami! Considering the distance with my girlfriend… I guess I’d like to hold hands. But I bet both are out for Azami! So for him, it’d be “something else”?

Azami: Hey, why’re you answering for me without askin’?

Kumon: I knew you wouldn’t answer so I figured I’d say something for you!

Azami: This isn’t somethin’ you talk about with other people!

Kumon: You weren’t saying anything though. You gotta give an answer here! For the Azami in my mind, I don't think he’d be interested in doing PDA outside—or rather, I don’t think he’d be able to do it in the first place… Ah, you see, Azami’s a serious guy! But I’m sure there’s someone out there who’ll say they like that about you!

Azami: Uh, why am I being encouraged right now…?

Kumon:: Anywho, what do you really think? Did my answer hit it out of the park?

Azami: Urk, don’t fricken ask me! No comment!

Azami: Director.....that's an insane amount of vegetables.

Director: For dinner, I'm planning to make a curry using lots of summer vegetables to prevent summer fatigue.

Director: By the way, was there something you needed?

Azami: I'm gonna be going to my parents house tomorrow to pick bamboo, so I thought I'd let you know.

Director: Ah, that bamboo you mentioned before? But tomorrow seems pretty sudden.

Azami: I told them it was okay since we weren't in a hurry, but my dad keeps nagging me to come and pick it quickly because it'll be Tanabata by then.

Director: (I'm sure the Chairman really wants to see Azami-kun.)

Director: Everyone will be happy and grateful to have bamboo again this year. Please go and collect it.

Azami: Got it.

Sakoda: Azami, welcome home!

Chairman: So you've finally come to pick bamboo.

Azami: I've already told you I didn't need it yet......

Chairman: You might not need it, Azami, but there are other young people who may feel differently.

Sakoda: That's right Azami! Maybe the Summer Troupe members would like decorating the bamboo!

Azami: Well, it is true that the Summer Troupe guys were making something and are probably gonna display it....

Sakoda: Then it'll be better to bring it sooner right?

Azami: You can decorate it in just a day.

Chairman: Well, that's fine isn't it? The sooner we can get it the better.

Makita: Bocchan, there are lots of bamboos in the garden. Please choose whichever one you like.

Azami: There are a lot? Got it, I'll go and check it out.

Azami: There's so many....... One would have been enough, but they prepared this many.

Makita: Ahh, well the Chairman told me to prepare a lot of things.

Sakoda: The bamboos that Azami doesn't choose will be donated to a nearby kindergarten or a store that children often go to, so don't worry!

Azami: I see. Which one to choose.....

Azami: (Ah, this bamboo's color is the prettiest)

Azami: I'll take this one.

Makita: As expected, you picked a good one. Well then, I'll get it ready so you can take it.

Azami: I'm counting on it.

Sakoda: I'll help out too!

Azami: (Are these all tanzaku* written by the members? I wonder what they wrote)

Young Yakuza Member A: Don't be like that. Please write your wishes down too, kay!

Azami: Hah!? I said I'm fine! I don't want to write it!

Young Yakuza Member A: Hahaa, well, I guess I have a complex about my handwriting.

Young Yakuza Member B: Mhm, it's cool, but it's round like a girls, so you probably don't want all of us seeing it right?

Young Yakuza Member B: Is that so? But it makes for a nice gap!

Azami: That's not what I'm talking about!

Young Yakuza Member C: If you don't want people seeing your tanzaku, you don't have to display it here.

Omi always noticed you, a photographer could not simply ignore a work of art like that, but it does take time for his feelings to grow. He wants a genuine friendship with no pretenses, no expectations, just two adults who enjoyed each other’s company. And yet when he does fall it’s like jumping off a cliff and belly-flopping into the water below. It was an inelegant descent with a lot of emotional fumbling, some denial of the situation at hand, but some things were just inevitable. Once he took that leap and realized there was nothing to fear, the sting would wear off and make way for an Omi who was much willing to take chances.

Azami does not think of romance much. You can tell when he shies away from a simple, friendly hug it’ll be an uphill battle to win him over (but it would be well worth the fight). Respecting his boundaries but making your interest in him known would catch his attention, but don’t push too hard as even his heart has its limits. A certified tough guy and your self-assigned protector, he lets you get closer to him than most. He might make you go through a slow-moving courting process but it doesn’t mean his heart doesn’t beat for you, or that he wasn’t haunted by dreams of how perfectly your hand would fit in his.

Taichi has always been very unapologetic about being your number one fan, and it’s been clear that he had a major crush on you from the start. It takes time for you to judge the sincerity of his actions but you also enjoy the ride, as Taichi was an incredibly fun and easy person to get along with. Whether you’re just a fleeting fancy or his one true love like his diary states, you never regretted a moment that you spent with him. He’s ready to worship the ground you walked on for the rest of his life if it would prove to you that he’ll never stray; a loyal puppy who only has eyes for you.

Your relationship is invaluable to him so it’s not as if he’ll set you aside, it’s simply that you’ll have to learn to live with a theatre addict. Still, to even tear his eyes from the stage for a moment is a feat to be proud of.

He has you on a course to an abrupt crash landing directly into his arms, blinded by his charms, unable to pinpoint when you had fallen just knowing there was no place more comfortable than by his side.

I heard you’re going to be in charge of directing the play again this time. But you also seem to have your hands full with a lot of other things.

  Despite that, you’re always trying your best with an admirable smile on your face. That part of you is truly adorable. You can’t help but catch my attention…  

I’d like to help you. I’ll do anything, so let me know.  

I’m from the horse clan so I’m fast and pretty good at carrying things. If necessary, I can hold you in my arms and carry you to your destination.

Kumon’s the representative of the horse clan… and he’s always causing so much trouble.  

There’s lots of members in the horse clan who like taking detours and going to unexplored areas. He’s no different.  

He constantly comes to invite me to go with him or to go do something together.  

Even when I’m taking a nap, he goes out of his way to find where I'm sleeping. He's so persistent that actually I go with him every now and then.  

But thanks to that, I can find spots that I’d like to show you, too… so I guess it’s not that bad.

“Surely the popular guy Omi-kun received lots of chocolates, right?”

Omi: “No... I refused all of them this year just to get Angel-chan’s.”

Taichi: “Seriously?!”

Omi: “The number of sacrifices I’ve made is different than you guys.”

Taichi: “Tch...”

Juza: “He sure is on a whole different level than us...”

Sakyo: “Excuse me, what are you all doing here?”

“That is a path that you are standing on. You will be a bother to other students if you keep chatting there.”

Azami: “Here comes a typical honour student. He’s even doing the glasses thing.”

Taichi: “Oh shush! Don’t act so bossy just because you’re the class prez!”

Juza: “Can’t we make a fuss at least on Valentine’s Day?”

Banri: “President. If you want to pass through here, go over my corpse!”

Azami: “Just shut your mouth for once.”

Taichi: “You look serious and all, but aren’t you the one who thinks about today the most?”

Sakyo: “What are you talking about? I have no interest in that.”

Y’know, I really like how Sakyo-san acted as the “Class president”.
