I Choose ones that are actually sequels, not prequels or inbetweeners (sorry lion king 1/2 and Bambi 2). Also had to be direct to video, not theater release (I'm very sad I couldnt include Return to Neverland but it had a theatrical release).
Theres still others that fit this bill, but I selected ones that I've actually seen/own or ones I thought were "bigger"/better known

AlCale Fanfiction Recommendations from a Crazy Person (UpdatingâŠ)
For those who can accept anything.
All the works are from sotdae (ìë). I recommend reading in this orderâŠ!
I Donât Love You (ëë ëčì ì ìŹëíŽì§ ìëë€)
Part 1 âą Part 2 âą Part 2 (R18) âą Epilogue (R18)
_
Of course it matters who the Young Master Shield dates! The mere rumor of the Rowoon Empire losing their Moon, their Silver Light, to a lover from a foreign power is already causing an uproar in the noblesâ conferenceâwhat more if the citizens caught wind? All the development in post-war stability will be for naught⊠unlessâŠ
ââŠWhat is it, Your Majesty?â
âWill you go out with me?â
âAre you crazy?â
If problems can be solved with bigger problems, then scandals can be solved with even bigger scandals.
Alver and Cale fake-date for political reasons. It progresses exactly how youâd expect it to.
_
Beautifully written. The author was able to excellently capture how two of the most calculating bastards would get together in their own special way.
Plot and Dialogue : S-Tier
_
Real Person Can Sue You
Part 1 âą Part 2 âą Part 2 (R18)
_
âWhy would he do something so stupid? He was so rich that additional income didnât mean anything, and the honor he could lose was endless.â
OR
The one where Cale picks up a strange hobby after everythingâs settled down.
_
If ancient Mesopotamia could churn out fanfiction for their local heroes Gilgamesh and Enkidu, then whoâs to say Rowoon wonât have the same for their beloved Sun and Moon? Anyways, I dub this the âfujo cale fanficâ. It was a very funny unhinged premise, but still.
Plot and Dialogue : S-Tier
_
Hand (ì)
Oneshot
_
Thereâs nothing in the hands of Rowoonâs newly crowned King that Cale desires.
Alver knows this.
And really, itâs not a bad thing at all.
âWhen you could read love in my eyes, did you think I couldnât read love in yours?â
_
Well, I thought this was really⊠the character interpretation⊠I can see it in canon. Cale sat Alver on the throne because he knows that by then, the otherâs number one priority will always be Rowoon. The second that priority wavers, Cale will definitely beat the King back to his senses. Donât be distracted by useless emotions and focus. It was bittersweet, but the ending was really good. Alcale is realâŠ
Plot and Dialogue: S-Tier
_
Bum of the Governorâs Family (êŽì°°ìŹëì íëìŽ ëìë€)
Part 1 âą Part 2
(Iâm not doing it any justiceâbut basically the title is a parody of the original work. Maybe a more literal translation of the title would be âI Became The Bum Bride of the Governorâs Householdâ because of êŽì°°ìŹëì. Also íëìŽ is the more ancient term equivalent for âSlackerâ with use dating back to the 900âs Goryeo Dynastyâso just imagine that setting and time period.)
_
A white hand like snow stretched out in front of Alverâs eyes.
âTake it, Your Highness. Then Iâll give you the world.â
The sweetest temptation.
Alver took its hand.
_
Oriental AU. Characteristics of secondary-sex and pheromones, but not necessarily omegaverse. If youâre a fan of Kingmaker Cale, then this oneâs for you. Cunning til the end, while it does roughly follow the plot of the originalâthere are still some moments that will make you go: ah!
Plot and Dialogue: S-tier
_
Love Potion (ìŹïżœïżœì ëŹìœ)
Oneshot
_
There lay an empty a glass plate, its previous contents reduced to mere crumbs of sugar.
Funny thing is, apparently one of them had⊠a love potion!?
âYour Majesty, if youâre in love with me right now, give me a weekâs vacation.â
âWell, the potionâs effects only last for three daysâŠâ
âTch. Then three days.â
Alver smiled faintly.
âYoung Master Cale, if youâre in love with me right now, please review this budget report.â
_
It was funny how they couldnât tell who took the love potion. Whatever they felt has always been, in their own definition, love. A very sweet story.
Plot and Dialogue: S-tier
_
Jane
Part 1 âą Part 2 âą Part 3 (R18)
WARNING: The content of this story may not be suitable for those who are sensitive to: Rape, Adultery, Self-Harm, Blackmail (incest), Graphic descriptions of Death/Murder (infants, toddlers).
Please read with caution.
-
âDonât call me, I wonât answer.â
âThen how do I catch you?â
Cale, who was inclined against the bedside, smiled brightly. He leaned his red head against the window, long hair flowing down and mixing with the moonlight.
âHow can you catch me?â
_
If you can handle the heavy themes listed in the warning, then PLEASE give âJaneâ a chance. No words can describe the emotional rollercoaster that was this story. Every description was as vivid as it was jarring. The downwards slope came gradually, but when it got steepâit felt impossible to turn back. For you as a reader, and for them as characters. Think about if Alver and Caleâs usual tacit agreement with each other took a twisted turn. I can guarantee none of what youâre thinking of now could prepare you for this fic.
Plot and Dialogue: SSS-Tier
_
copycat
Part 1 âą Part 2 âą Part 3 âą Part 4 âą Part 5 (R18) âą Part 6 (R18) âą Part 7 (R18) âą Part 8 âą Part 9
_
Basically LCF if it were the Sci-Fi genre. No excerpt, there are too many incredible parts. Heads up for scientists on steroids instead of mages, advanced AI robots instead of dragons, cyborgs instead of necromancers, and sick eugenicist AI White Star. Give it a read if youâre a fan of rich world building!

Scott pilgrim takes off inhabits the same artistic space as the matrix 4, or even the final fantasy 7 remake. I mean this as a good thing. It has the distinct touch of an artist that made something that defined a generation revisiting the art that outgrew them a thousandfold with more maturity and different interests.
These interests usually skew meta, they're about what drives someone to revisit something made by a past version of oneself, about the experience of suddenly gaining more influence than anyone could reconcile, where criticisms of your work (which you also, no doubt, have many) become synonymous with criticisms of your culture. If you've been here a while, you probably know (and are tired of) what I'm talking about, manic pixie dream girls and aloof average male protagonists, toxic nostalgia, pick your theme and it's a video essay title.
Imagine having every read of your 2004 funny video game-coded coming of age comic reverberate infinitely toward every direction, people saying your main character taught a whole generation of men to be self-absorbed while the exact opposite type of people rant about how your secondary lead "ruined a whole generation of women" because of hair-dye or whatever. Imagine Edgar Wright makes a movie adaptation of your cute little comic that somehow launches the careers of half of the current celebrity pantheon simultaneously. How would that change you?
Well, for one, it makes you less relatable. The truth of an aloof nerdy guy dating in his early 20s is a lot more universal than the truth of an artist in his 40s forever defined by the event horizon of a thing he wrote half his life ago. The matrix 4 couldn't stop talking about how it feels to have created the matrix. The final fantasy 7 remake can't help but to constantly examine what it means to remake final fantasy 7. It's easy to see why someone would hate that indulgent meta trend, I'll probably never write a generation-defining story, why would I care about the first world problems of someone who did? It can feel distant, and at its worst it can feel insulting. Like it's pointing the finger at the fans, whispering 'you did this to me'. I get that.
I get that, but I love it.
It's the fundamental difference between wanting something that is like something you liked, and wanting someone that is from the same creator of something you liked. The difference between feeding the mona lisa into an AI and finding a new authentic da Vinci. You can't make something entirely new if you religiously stick to using the parts of something that's already there. The human behind the work will always have influences you didn't realize, thought patterns and aesthetic preferences that weren't entirely clear in their previous work, no matter how much you deconstruct it. More importantly, the human will also change, and this organic self-continuity will reflect on the art. I don't want the creator of something to hold their own creation with the same zeal as its fans, because someone who did that simply wouldn't have been capable of creating the original piece in the first place.
I don't want a product, I want art.
Scott pilgrim, the original, indulges the most earnest impulse we have-- that of self-mythologizing, of creating a narrative off of our own lives. To depict the mundane as fantastic, interpersonal relationships as adventures. It resonated with so many people because it was earnest, and it was also picked apart to hell and back because it was earnest. Its flaws were on display, and not just the ones it intended to show. But in my opinion, the opposite impulse, that of washing off everything that could be criticized and presenting the cleanest possible image of yourself through your art, is just... bad. it makes for bad art, or it just freezes you. The very first hurdle of creating anything is getting over that, then maybe the spotlight will fall on you. If it does, you'll get everything you ever wanted, but everyone gets to see through you.
So, how do you revisit something like that? You have two options. Either you take all the pieces and try to reassemble them exactly how everyone remembers it, signing your name as a formality, looking at a mirror in which you no longer see yourself, or you talk to it. You dialogue with your own work, with who you used to be. You travel in time and talk to yourself. You question them, acknowledge them but also teach them a thing or two. You don't respect the product, you respect the feeling. You find the same earnestness that made you put pen to paper for the first time, and you point it towards your new loves and fears. Maybe you make it less about the main guy, take the chance to develop your secondary characters, maybe you give the girl more agency. Maybe you summon the future and refuse its answers. Maybe you fight yourself.
That's the harder choice. It submits your new self to the scrutinizing eyes of a whole new generation, it risks alienating the people who identified with your previous piece. It's riskier, probably less profitable, and by any pragmatic lens probably a bad idea. But it's the only way you can make art. It's truth, the truth that got you there in the first place.
It's how you get it together.

The Void: Chapter One
Max Verstappen x reader x Charles Leclerc
Summary: Reader and her brother Michael are hiding from their father. A man with a special ability that she inherited. When Max is in danger one night, she's forced to confront her fear to save him.
Warnings: gore if you squint, monsters?, blood, talks of murder, talks of abuse and neglect
Notes: PLEASE READ THIS! Void walking is my own original idea! I'm writing this as an experimental way of actually seeing how it would work. Please do not copy this idea!
Masterlist
Sometimes, she hates that it's the rich people of the world that could get away with murder. Other times, she remembers that technically, they are the ones who pay her.
Well... they pay her brother. She just exists. Pretending to useful.
Michael had said she needs keep herself as hidden away as possible. Their father would most likely only come looking for her since she inherited his terrible ability.
He'd called it a few things; void walking, reality shifting, hell, the works. The fact she and him can see into a world that's different and yet so similar is terrifying. One moment there is no door then you simply shift realities and then the door is there for you to escape through and people are left to wonder how you just walked through the wall.
The terrible part is that the alternative is terrifying to look at. Like every odd creature and demonic figure has been placed there. Scary monsters from her nightmares and blood spatters from unknown entities.
At fist she didn't know how to control it at all. Somehow ending up in the world where things where constantly trying to kill her. But then she learned that nit all monsters are bad. Some of them do their best to help her and keep her safe or even provide things her father couldn't.
Michael had taken her and ran when he turned eighteen. He promised to start new where they could live freely. She wouldn't say this is very 'free' but it's better then living with her serial killer father.
He'd managed to worm his way into the world of F1. How? She has absolutely no idea. He did his time and moved up the ranks and is now one of the top engineers with Redbull. The garage she spends her time hiding away in.
It's not like she's elusive. She's always orbiting around her brother and helping his out even though she's not being paid.
Michael just lets her help him woth his work because it keeps her busy and out of her head. Well - out if the secondary world she lives in.
Now she finds herself aimlessly reading a book in the Redbull hospitality. Her phone lighting up with Michael's caller ID.
"Hello? You know I'm not that far away right?" She answers sarcastically. The huff in her brothers voice is less then amused.
"Yes, I know, but I need a favor."
"What kind of favor?"
"The kind where you bring me something to eat because it's past noon and I'm starving and I'll let you explore the city tonight." He proposes. Hesitant woth the way he says it. Michael rarely lets her go anywhere alone. Monaco seems like the worst place to do so but the thought of escaping his eagle eye for an hour is enough to make her not question it.
"Deal."
~
The walk down would have been swift. Had a certain Dutch driver been paying attention and she wasn't lost in her own thoughts.
Now she's frantically apologizing and he's just looking at her smiling. The stupid smile that makes her melt.
Since her brother is one of Max's highest engineers, she spends a decent amount of time around him. They'd become fast friends since they met.
They were much younger then. She was seventeen and Max was nineteen. Now Max has just turned twenty-three and is on his way to a possible title.
It's been hectic and they'd barely had time to talk as of late. So it's a bit funny that their first conversation they'd had in a couple weeks is her frantically apologizing for running straight into him.
At least she wasn't void walking and ran through him instead. That would've been awkward and hard to explain.
"Why are you apologizing so much?" He chuckles. The action only makes her more flustered.
Her choulders eat her ears in embarrassment. "Just feel bad, I guess."
"I'm assuming you're heading to the garage for your brother?"
"He's getting hangry." She rolls her eyes. Mostly just annoyed that she had to put down her book for this.
Max holds out an arm for her to take. Almost like something out of a medieval romance which does nothing good for her imagination. "Can I walk you then?"
"What's your angle, Verstappen?"
"Can I not just want to spend five minutes with my friend?"
~
That evening Michael makes good on his promise to let her out alone. Max had invited her over to his apartment that night if she had time to spare.
Even offered to meet her halfway. An offer she accepted because she comes to Monaco for one weekend out of the year and has a tendency to get turned around when she doesn't have a set route.
She walks around the dock waiting for him. The moon light bounces off the water as the soft sounds of the water moving about fills her ears. It's peaceful here.
Until it's not.
Shadows are the dominate species in the void. Ghastly figures that could terrify most. And most do terrify her. But not all of them are evil and she's formed a few close bonds with the kind shadows she's met.
Her father's shadows were terrifying to look at and even more terrifying to fight. She thinks this is why as a child, the shadow she effectively called Fang because her small mind saw big fangs and decided upon that, came to her aid. It bore its teeth to protect her and has done so since she was five. Sometimes when she is upset, Fang will shrink into a small soft creature and lay over her lap. Like a really demented looking dog. That doesn't mean Fang isn't cute, just the only comparison she can make.
Now Fang is attempting to get her attention. Something or someone is here and it's not anything good.
She breathes before letting her mind lets her body slip a little into the void. The red sky and dirty water make her want to vomit but the sight of Fang makes it tolerable.
She follows it's lead around the corner and she's grateful the layout of the dock is the same. Aside from it being broken and rusted of course.
The muffled shouts are what takes her off guard. She can now clearly see Max being attacked. By who she has no idea. But the world she grew up in showed her that people do crazy things for no reason other then the high.
"Hey Fang, wanna play fetch?" The shadow looks at her with a glint of excitement. The bare eyes still light up with emotion even if it's hard to see." Just don't kill anyone."
The void deals a lot in energy. If her energy surrounds something enough then she can interact without regardless of how she's seeing it. That, in turn, means Fang also can because of their bond.
The female slips out her pocket knife and walks steadily towards them. Three unknown and a Max. Simple enough.
About 6 meters away, they finally notice her. She can faintly hear Max's muffled shouts through the unknown figure clamping their hand over his mouth.
She throws the knife then shifts again to the void. She just continues walking as Fang snatches it out of the air and land directly of the figure hold max. The knife sinks into their thigh. The shifts back to check the damage and Max is now scrambling to stand up and the knife has disappeared. Still in the void with Fang.
"Let him go unless you want more!" She shouts. Her voice melding with the sound of the water.
They look at each other a debate whether it's worth it. They obviously aren't prepared for a real fight.
She can feel Fang brush against her leg. Another great thing about their bond. Being able to feel the other despite not being shifted.
The three end up running away with their tail between their legs. Then she walks to Max to make sure he's okay.
They hug as soon as their proximity is close. Her head hurts from shifting so much. She doesn't normally do it that much they quickly. Even as she's walking her vision keeps switching between navy blue and deep red.
It switch back to blue and she takes a moment to assess Max. "Are you alright? You're not hurt?"
"No and I definitely owe you one for saving me. But what was that? I mean- how did you...?" He starts to maxplain but doesn't get far as her vision switchs once again. This time revealing something terrifying.
She knows what's going to happen. She'll get stuck between worlds. This power is far from perfect and has a tendency to set somone perfectly inbetween worlds. She can feel and see Max and also the shadow with spindly claws that's approaching her.
It's not a nice shadow and she's pissed it off somehow. Probably just disturbed it.
It's arms reach around Max and it caresses her cheek drawing. It burn as it pierces her skin and draws a line across her cheek.
"Y/N? You okay?" Max is shaking her shoulders to get a response. "You're bleeding now. I watched it appear out of thin air!"
Fang is immediately in protector mode. It's massive teeth and now exponentially larger size then before makes them intimidating.
The two end up in a brawl. She can hear the whispers of other memories and entities in the void. It's never a kind place to end up and she feels for the gentle shadows who endure daily.
She sinks to the ground and clutches her ears. Her attempt at blocking them out is futile. The whispers always make it in. They creep around her skin. They paint out the ugly lies.
Then her body is being jostled. It's a miracle she can even be moved from the outside. Normally she becomes a ghost because she can only be tied to one at a time. Her body only interacting with one even if it's still see in the other.
Being stuck between makes twice as many things in the way. But here in Max's hold she tries to think about how she's safe. She thinks about how his skin is warm and how he smells like citrus and the sun.
~
To say Max is panicked would be an understatment. The girl in his arms keeps getting stuck on things that aren't there and he's about to lose his mind.
Whatever sort of mime work this is needs to stop. She's bleeding and hyperventilating and now her sleeve is torn open.
He needs to get her to his apartment so that they can talk about what's going on. Which is what he would've done if she didn't completely pass out in his arms.
The entire walk back is painful. It's even painful trying to get her to sit down because she's still hitting non-existent objects.
She ends up in the tub. He'll apologize later but right now is not the time. He pulls out the first aid and puts her brother on speaker. He sends a silent prayer that he's still awake.
"Max? Everything okay?" He sounds perfectly ready to take on a five mile sprint. How does he have so much energy after he worked on the car for ten hours straight?
"Actually I have you sister and I think some invisible force is trying to kill her." He realizes how stupid it sounds after he says it. The silence on the other end makes him think Michael is about to die of laughter.
"Is she awake?" His tone completely changes into something serious and Max begins to panic just a little more.
"No, she passed out halfway to my apartment."
"I need you not to panic about anything, okay? Just do as I say and then I'll explain later."
"Okay."
~
Ten minutes. It took him ten minutes to wake her up. Her screams and thrashing from the initial wake up were calmed when she realized it was him. Her brother still on speaker talking her through something.
"Y/N, I need you to relax. Is Fang there?"
"Yes." The crack in her voice hurts him. He'd known her for years now but had never seen her like this.
"Is there something attacking you?"
"Not anymore."
Attacking? Max does his best to hide the shock. Has she been getting attacked by invisible things? For some reason he feels a bit selfish for never noticing it. She noticed everything. Knew Jos was not the greatest person with a single look. She always knew how he was feeling. How had he not been able to reciprocate?
Max shakes himself of his thoughts. Hew needs to be present for her right now.
"You have to shift the balance again. I know it's hard, but I need you to lean into my voice and Max's presence."
Her eyes screw closed in concentration. Max can't help but admire the way she looks when she's concentrated because it's different from how he looks. His is angry and fierce concentration, but hers is almost curious and welcoming.
When her eyes flicker back open she heaves a sigh of relief. Her head twists around as if to fully understand where she is.
"I did it." She almost beams. Max has no idea what she did but he smiles proudly anyway. If only to be supportive of his friend.
He's never liked that word for them. Friend. He needs to get a handle on his thoughts. She almost died and he's thinking about his relationship status. But maybe this is a good thing. Daniel would say it's probably a sign he should Confess. Has told him to do so for a year now.
"So the options now are that I can explain to Max, or you can explain to Max."
She ponders for a moment. Her eyes stare into him like she's assessing something. "I will."
"Do you want me here or do you want to do it alone?"
"I'll be okay."
~
Max stares at her for the fifth time. She'd explained it to him multiple times and answered his questions the best she knows how.
"It's a lot to take in, I'm sorry I'm struggling to understand." He shoots her an apologetic glance.
She just shrugs in return. "To be fair, I don't even completely understand it."
"I'm also sorry about your dad."
"Not like yours is any better. No need to compare, we've both been through things." She smiles him.
They're sat on his bed, limbs sprawled out comfortably. Soft music plays in the background.
"Can I... I want to... follow me?" Max starts speaking with his hands instead and gestures to the balcony attached to his room.
The two step outside. The fresh air is nice after breathing in the ash of the void.
Max faces her. The eye contact is terrifying, but she holds it. She knows it's how he tries to communicate his feelings. "I have a confession." She nods her head to show she's listening. Max's hands tentatively sup her cheeks, but he relaxs when she lets herself lean into it. "I've loved you for a while now. Ever since last year, when you sat with me for hours, consoling me over something stupid."
"It wasn't -"
"Not the point." He shushs. "I'm trying to tell you that my heart hurts thinking you've been hurting all this time and I want to be there for you in a way that I can't as just a friend." He finally confesses.
She stares at him wide eyed but her smile is radiating. "I love you too, Max. I panicked when I saw you pinned down. Couldn't bare the thought of something terrible happening and losing you." She places a hand over his.
It happened so quickly. The feeling of his lips on hers. Then they were gone.
"I'm gonna be there for you now too. No more hiding away from me."
She finds herself getting lost in the blue of his eyes. How could she refuse him such a thing? "I promise."

marker of the end â zh.
pairing âą zhang hao x gn!readerÂ
genre âą fluff, angst, academic rivals to lovers/enemies to lovers, college!au
warnings âą like one swear word, mention of drinking
word count âą 1.5k
synopsis âą this would be the last time you and zhang hao crossed paths as rivals.
this was the moment you were waiting for the past few years. hearing your name called to walk across the big stage. shaking hands with several of the university board. most importantly, looking your rival in the eyes in a gloating way to celebrate your own accomplishments, your graduation at the top of your department. you had won.Â
what you didnât expect was for zhang hao to look back at you with a soft look in his eyes, a wide smile on his face, and two thumbs up for you once you made eye contact. for the first time, you could understand why he was the campus crush. you never understood such blasphemy because the two of you had always been at ends with each other in academics.Â
at seven years old, you found the most pride in your ability to quickly do math, always completing the tests your teacher distributed every week in under 20 seconds with 100% accuracy. there was no one that could beat you.Â
until the time you and hao both brought your tests up to the teacher at the same time, the first time he had caught up to you. by some miraculous twisted fate, you had gotten one question wrong, and he had taken the title of the weekâs fastest perfect scorer.Â
âha, finally!â he exclaimed.Â
âmmm just a fluke.âÂ
at twelve years old, you found the most pride in taking honors classes in secondary school. you were always placed with students who were older than you, many of them baffled at how such a young person could be learning the same material as them.Â
but of course, there was also a certain someone who always managed to find their way into your class as well. in fact, the first time you had one of those classes, he plopped down next to you, his irritating aura being something you could always sense.Â
âfancy seeing you here,â he jeered, taking out his notebooks and pencil pouch filled with various pens for note taking, âthought youâd be stuck in the regular classes seeing how panicked you were for placement exams.â
âshut it zhang,â you spat, slamming your own pouch onto the table and drawing attention to yourself, âyou canât get rid of me that easily.â
at age eighteen, you found the most pride in taking the podium at your high school graduation, doing a speech as the valedictorian. being able to stand there amongst your peers knowing you had worked the hardest and done the most for your position was everything you dreamed of.Â
however, you had to share it with him. the teachers tried and tried, but they could not find even the slightest difference in your grades. you were practically the same student: studious, hardworking, and intelligent. there was nothing to set the two of you apart, so it was only fair for you to take the podium together. you only wished they had allocated more time for the venue because sharing your valedictorian speech was definitely not something you always wanted.Â
ânow donât you try to push me off the stage in front of everyone,â he warned, âthat wouldnât be very top goody-two-shoes student of you now. letâs be civil today.âÂ
you rolled your eyes. âfunny for you to say that when youâre always the one provoking me with your irritating voice. i already have to hear your voice blasting through the speakers, so why donât you just save my ears from bleeding before i even have to hear that?â
at age twenty-one, you found the most pride in sitting at the library speeding through your assignments at a quick yet accurate pace. you tried not to procrastinate, but sometimes things did happen. at those times, there was nothing more satisfying than seeing the to-do list diminish into nothing.Â
and for once, you didnât mind your rival sitting across from you doing work. his presence actually made you feel more motivated to complete your assignments, wanting to finish your long list before he finished his.Â
âfinally off your spree?â he questioned, looking up to see you chewing on your pencil at a particularly hard problem, âtoo hard for you?âÂ
âplease shut the fuck up. i canât concentrate if youâre bothering me.âÂ
âokay chill,â he raised his hands up in defense, âi was just wondering if i could maybe help or anything. you look like you have a lot on your plate today.âÂ
âyou? help me? you literally pray for my downfall, why would you do that?â you interrogated, believing he would somehow sabotage your problem by giving you some preposterous answer.Â
âyeah, but you seem to be stressing a lot, so i thought iâd offer. one nice act in our rivalry wonât undermine the countless other things weâre at each otherâs throats for, right?âÂ
you eyed him carefully, still wary, but you had no other choice. you couldnât even comprehend the question. âfine.âÂ
looking back, maybe the rivalry was fading out at the end. nearing graduation, it seemed the two of you cooled down, not constantly trying to one-up the other in any class. in fact, you no longer shared most of the same classes and were basically in your own worlds. apart from the occasional glare you gave each other while walking across campus, your hatred had not been so apparent. even your friends had pointed out how you complained less about the equally-studious boy.Â
that was why you let your guard down when he approached you after the ceremony, when you were taking pictures with your family and friends. they all wanted to capture the moment on your wonderful day.Â
âwell, we meet again,â he joked, trying to copy the once threatening tone he had the first time he said that to you in the second grade. though, now there was no sense of menace in his tone, only congratulatory. âgood job out there. you deserve it.âÂ
âwhy thank you zhang.âÂ
âhao, you can call me hao,â he clarified, sticking his hand out as if to mimic a first interaction, âyou donât have to refer to me with my last name anymore. weâre not rivals now.âÂ
âare we not now?â you ask teasingly as you shook his hand.
âunless you want to apply to the same jobs and try to rob each other of opportunities, then sure,â he teased back.Â
âi never thought iâd see the day you two get along.âÂ
the two of you turned around to see your friend, the one who had received the most complaints about hao throughout your college experience. there were so many nights where you went on tangents about how stupid your rival was, more of them drunk than sober. if anyone knew how much you hated hao, it was them.Â
âi say we should save this as a memory. how do you two feel about a picture?âÂ
you looked at hao to try to see his stance on it, but he only gave a mere shrug as a response. you assumed that was a positive response, so you moved next to him for the picture.Â
âget a little closer now you two! who stands a foot apart in pictures?âÂ
rolling your eyes at your friend, you inched closer to hao until your bodies touched. it was the first time you two had ever gotten so close.Â
ânow, letâs get a little arm around the shoulder!âÂ
once again, you wanted to strangle your friend for the nitpicky requests. it was just a picture! all that needed to be done was a simple click to capture the moment. though, to make it go faster, you obliged, swinging your arm around his shoulder while he did the same to you. it was an awkward position for you to be in after despising him for most of your life.Â
as your friend tried to find a good angle, hao made conversation with you through his smile. âso what if i asked you for lunch as ex-rivals?âÂ
you furrowed your eyebrows in confusion. âex-rivals in what kind of way? like are we hanging out as friends, or are you asking me out on a date?âÂ
he chuckled. âi didnât even think of the second option, but if you want it to be a date, i can certainly make it that.âÂ
you stepped on his foot, but he had to hide the pain for the sake of the photo. âthat is not what i meant. do not get ahead of yourself. iâm just making sure youâre not trying anything.âÂ
âyeah, like i would ever. so howâs next wednesday sound?â
âsure.âÂ
âawww you guys look so cute!â your friend complimented as they came over, showing the picture to both you and hao, âdo you want me to send it to you?âÂ
you waved it off, âyou can keep it. why would i want to have a picture of myself with a guy i spent my whole life loathing in my camera roll?âÂ
what you didnât know is youâd be asking that same friend to dig up the picture from their camera roll when you and hao bought your first home together. that way, youâd both have a memory of the moment your rivalry ended and your love began.Â

thoughts on Lilith Clawthorne? Her redemption or her time a villain etc?
So I actually haven't of just Lilith and this is going to be fun for me because if you talk about Lilith, you have to split her into two halves. S1 and everything beyond. This division is not about villain versus protagonist though. Her narrative role does change into that but the thing is that those are secondary roles to her main roles.
Namely, that of a straight man vs comic relief.
In comedy, the straight man is given the veneer of seriousness for the sake of having someone who will react to the jokes in a way that helps elevate them where a laugh wouldn't. This is your stick in the mud who hates sarcasm or puns or stuff like that. They see the absurdity happening and clap back. People like Red from that 70's show, or Doctor Cox from Scrubs, are straight men who help play on jokes through contrast. This isn't even that they cannot be funny themselves but that usually their humor is more rooted in a grounded sense, such as Doctor Cox ranting at someone after they've been stupid because they've been stupid, rather than the absurdity the other characters revel in.
For The Owl House, especially Eda's sister, this was a masterstroke. One of the biggest issues TOH has with its comedy is actually a lack of reaction to them. Few people laugh along and almost no one will ever get upset, not unless they themselves are the butt of the joke. My favorite jokes in TOH are essentially all rooted in someone actually killing what you'd expect, such as Gus saying he gets it when Luz says no offense to him for saying Willow is stronger or the monster hunter who has always dreamt of pushing children off giving a deadpan "I was a weird kid." But no one in the series really has it as a dedicated role besides Lilith.
The only problem, and this is a core issue with her character, is that she's actually not a very good straight man. She never has barbs to throw back or moments of actually winning against the others comedically. Yes, we like seeing the straight man suffer, which Lilith does, but we love just as much when he can actually fight back. Lilith never fights back, not with comedy. She'll shout and throw a tantrum but honestly, she gets so frustrated that it isn't even a comedic reaction like a straight man should have. She never has that normal groan, roll your eyes and then bring your paper up as you put a wall between you and stupid. Instead she gets loud and meets Eda every time on her level which is NOT THE POINT.
Otherwise, how is she as a villain? Well, she only has the VENEER of seriousness, like I said before for this role. She is knocked down in almost all encounters with her and made into a fool in some way. In some way made out to be honestly kind of bad at her job which she shouldn't be. She's the only witch on the Isles who can compete with Eda, the literal only representative of the EC proper before the S1 finale and the best member of the EC. If she's a joke, what are we supposed to think of the main villain faction as a whole? It's like if instead of Zuko in S1 of Avatar, it was Azula who was the bumbling fool, constantly failing to catch Aang, sometimes in comedic ways.
The saving grace for her though is three things: A lack of screentime and paced out far enough from each other mostly that it's easy to respect her title and forget how much often she gets punk, the fact that usually it is some sort of trick that beats her, even if it makes her look foolish and finally her relationship with Eda. Mind you, that last one is actually really shallow. There's nothing really here besides the fact that they care about each other but are on different sides. We actually never get an exploration of why they're on different sides, minus the curse obviously but that's hardly personally driven, that was inflicted on one of them by the other, how they've dealt with this divide, how they actually see each other even, etc. like that. Most of their adventures honestly portray them as not even giving a shit about the core conflict between each other because they're more than happy to goof around, bend the rules, BOTH OF THEM, and just act like they're teenagers to be frank. It's shallow but it's effective enough to make you want to see them getting along.
Then I will admit she gets a good finish and an act of redemption that feels entirely correct for the fact that Lilith really wasn't much of a villain ever but had committed a grievous mistake upon someone else. A good finish to a character who was entirely unremarkable besides a kick ass design. That's S1.
You all remember that I said TOH had a problem of having NO OTHER STRAIGHT MEN OUTSIDE OF LILITH?
Okay, I defined Straight Man, let's talk about comic relief. Now, we actually need to acknowledge, thanks to a bit of lingering strength to Lilith's writing, that comic relief is not actually a character trait. Comic relief itself is a writing tool. It is just anytime comedy is used to help ease tension. That's what it's relieving. Much of the time, there will be one character who is better at this than others. Sokka is the comic relief of Avatar much of the time. However... He's not a comic relief character because his existence is not the joke.
That inherent fact is the reason why 'Comic Relief Character' is purely negative. By the mandate of the label, all they are is a joke. They are entirely 2 dimensional and exist only to insert comedy when comedy is decided as being necessary. Now you might go "Wait, isn't the Straight Man all about comedy?" but hear me out. The veneer of seriousness means that a good straightman gives as good as he gets. When he rolls his eyes, the joke isn't rolling his eyes. The joke is whatever came before and the gesture amplifies it. Meanwhile, when King has a tantrum about not being taken seriously, the tantrum is the joke. We're supposed to laugh at King, not laugh with him. S1 King, S1 Gus, HOOTY, all of these characters in TOH function like this to the point where when they do have focused episodes, they feel out of character because to try and give them something more to do, they inherently have to get rid of the one core trait you laugh at and that's their entire identity. This is why Gus and King become drastically less fun, and honestly less interesting, when the shift is attempted with them, and stuff like King caring about Luz going or not comes out of nowhere, just like Gus' anxieties do. These characters are so much dedicated to their comedy that even trying to play on shifting perspective of it rings hollow unless you're REALLY good at it.
SO. What about Lilith? Well, through Affearances, she's actually pretty good because is comic relief, not a comic relief character. We see elements of it brewing, the fact that she is definitely being taken less seriously, the fact that she just is less serious and the fact that while we have in the past pitied Eda for her helplessness due to lack of magic, we're meant to laugh at Lilith. Following through on the finale though is seriousness enough and gives her enough genuine personal motivation that while many scenes are played for laughs, she still feels distinctly Lilith.
The second Coll Aunt Lilith shows up, old Lilith is dead and buried. All there is now is the comic relief character. We laugh at her version of nerdy, while Luz is accepted. She is now all about history, a trait she barely had before now, and is for the most part entirely oblivious to anything going on around her because she's just a comic archeologist now. She has barely two brain cells to rub together, questions nothing and even her trauma, her losing EVERYTHING, in a manner very similar to Hunter but way more effective because she actually had something to lose at the time unlike Mister "My Uncle is gonna kill me anyways, may as well turn good," is treated as a joke. Maybe the most offensive line, just singular line, to any of the core themes and things TOH technically claims to care about, is "I'm realizing I was bad at my job." The fact that we are meant to laugh at that, laugh at the ONE accomplishment Lilith has ever had in life and sacrificed so much for, and so sacrificing it made S1's finale powerful... Fuck you.
And you might go "Well, she became comic relief because King and Gus, as I said before, stopped. So they were the straight men, right? Or Hunter?" No. They aren't. Because they don't react to jokes like Lilith did. So much of the sparse humor in S2 and 3 is just joke and then crickets. Worse yet is that the comedy isn't fast enough to make the dead reaction to jokes actually work. It's why the like ONE good joke I can think of in S3 is Amity yes anding Luz talking about who might want to eat Stringbean because SOMEONE reacted to the fucking joke. Otherwise, the lost comic relief relief characters (and honestly, Hunter is so pitifully framed that it's hard to take him seriously and he almost comes across as primarily comic relief too, especially after his second appearance) are just boring now.
The degradation of Lilith is emblematic of so much that is wrong with TOH as a piece of entertainment. That is an important element to remember after all. We talk about fucked up themes, arcs, etc. in the show but as a kid's product that IS a comedy, how well it entertains is an important question. How well does it make you laugh, stay engaged and be entertained?
And well, by the end, the greatest joke of all is simply the show itself. See you next tale.
======+++++======
Btw, I think there's something to be said that Luz actually acts as a straight man but uh... You might have noticed that I mostly listed assholes. Luz gives us, by far, WAY more than anyone gives her, negative reactions to other people being themselves. She does most of the subversive humor, she doesn't like Hooty, her most expressive faces are almost always someone expressing themselves and her being against it or thinking they're stupid. For a show that wants to preach 'be yourself' and 'self expression is king' having your main character be a judgemental bitch about these elements is a... Choice. It also makes her poorly suited to be a straight man because instead of elevating a joke, it just comes across as mean spirited or hypocritical.

Least favorite Star Trek character in each series?
i love all my children equally how could you do this to me!!!!
slightly more rational answer: i have been thinking about this since yesterday when i got the ask and it's like every time i think i have an answer i immediately go "oh but i love them for XYZ" and they move up in the ranks. ultimately most treks are ensemble shows and removing anybody from the ensemble makes it all fall apart!
gun to my head, though, bearing in mind that i love all of them:
tos: gun to my head it's chapel i'm afraid and i feel bad about it. she doesn't really get to grow much and the other most-static character is probably chekov and i had a massive crush on him. in 1967 when they went "you know this show should add a mop top for the teenyboppers out there" they were talking specifically about me 30 years later.
tng: i would take the bullet for real.
ds9: man i'm going through main characters and then secondary characters and then tertiary characters and how are they all so essential and good????? literally i have gone thru a list of characters and a list of episodes and am coming up blank. even the villains are fantastic. eddington is annoying but he's supposed to be and his episodes are all great. sloan himself is fun it's just what section 31 did to star trek in general that sucks. like????? there's not a single name that shows up in the credits that doesn't make me go YEAHHHHHH.
voy: if we can count recurring characters i'm saying barclay. i liked him a lot as a character in tng and but go "for fuck's sake" whenever i see "guest star dwight schultz" on the voyager credits. i dislike pretty much every earth-contact episode after "message in a bottle" so maybe i don't like voyager-barclay because he just happens to be there?? for main cast it'd be neelix shut up shut up i love him in the ensemble but sometimes when they give him his own episode it's too much.
ent: sorry malcolm lovers this was the only show that was an easy choice. like we SHOULD dig into the fact that essentially his greatest wish is to sacrifice himself and he won't be happy until he dies on the job. klingon behavior but not at all for the fun and glory of it just because he kind of just doesn't enjoy being alive???? archer is terrible in so many ways but he's also much more enjoyable to watch being terrible.
disco: this is actually a very weird show to even know who to choose from. the cast changes every year! we barely even know the bridge crew! who is interesting enough to count as a main character?? of the main title cast i'm kind of hot and cold with adira. i like them but the sheer amount of anxiety radiating off them at all times makes me tense up whenever they come on screen. (i just realized it's kind of ironic to say adira because they're basically a mix of wesley and ezri, who would probably make this list for most other trekkies but are two of my absolute faves.) (i will think long and hard about this)
snw: i don't know that i have enough of a read on any of them? i still haven't finished it. chapel (again?? oh no) is the one i had the hardest time warming up to early on because she seemed the most wink-y and out of place in a franchise that usually takes silly things very seriously, but i did warm up to her!
lower decks: if we can go with guest characters i hate badgey (only one on here that gathers the "hate" rating!!). i don't find him (it??) funny and i know i SHOULD find it funny which means whenever it shows up i am both not having a good time and feel bad about not having a good time. the main characters are all brilliant. gun to my head it's boims but it's a close one i love them all.
i don't even know what other shows we have i've run out of steam???
oh right picard. captain shaw??? why is such a large subset of fandom so horny for him??? and shipping him with seven of nine of all things???? is it just White Guy With Trauma because there are like. a lot of other white guys with trauma in this franchise to choose from.
#chatter post#anonymous friend#star trek thoughts#this killed me i'm going to eat ice cream straight from the container now and i didn't even get them all

PROPAGANDA
KATHERINA MINOLA (THE TAMING OF THE SHREW) (CW: Domestic Abuse)
1.) We had to read this for English my senior year. I got so mad at the way sheâs treated. Sheâs the titular âshrewâ of the play. She has to be married off before her younger sister can get married, because that makes sense.
Then the most dogshit man imaginable comes along, and everybody thinks theyâre perfect. He literally gaslights her and denies her food and water.
Fuck Petruchio and Katherine Minola deserved better!
2.) Literally the whole play is about how she is so awful that the main guy needs to change her entire personality, which he does as a challenge not because he likes her, and then proceeds to her abuse her for the rest of the play. Yet, he is portrayed as the hero, not a villain and she is shown to have âimprovedâ at the end. People will say, oh itâs open to interpretation, it can be played different ways, itâs satire, but i donât find abuse funny and there is a distinct lack of commentary in the play to count as satire imo. Taming of the Shrew is a tragedy not a comedy, I will die on this hill. Kate deserves better!
3.) The title isnât joking, yaâll. She literally gets broken like a rebellious feral animal and itâs treated as a happy ending.
CORDELIA CHASE (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/ANGEL THE SERIES) (CW: Pregnancy)
1.) (downs an entire bottle of vodka and slams it back on the table) SO. CORDY. Cordy started off as a supporting character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. At the start she was your typical high school mean girl character, but as the show went on we got to see more depth to her character: her insecurities, her courage, her capacity for incredible acts of kindness. Then after the third season she moved into the showâs spin off, Angel, where from the beginning she was basically the showâs secondary protagonist. Her and Angel were the two mainstays of the showâs main cast, she gets the most episodes centered on her out of all the characters aside from Angel (and yes, Iâve checked), and we really got to see her grow from a very shallow and self-centered and kind of mean person to a true hero who was prepared to give up any chance at a normal life to fight the good fight while still never losing the basic core of her character. There were some⊠questionable moments like the episode where she gets mystically pregnant with demon babies and things got a bit iffy like halfway through season 3 where the writers seemed to run out of ideas for what to do with her outside of sticking her in this romance drama/love triangle situation with the main character but overall, pretty good stuff right? THEN SEASON 4 HAPPENED. In season 4 she gets stripped of literally all agency and spends pretty much the entire season possessed by an evil higher power, and while possessed she sleeps with Angelâs teenage son (who BY THE WAY she had helped raise as a baby before he got speed-grown-up into a teenager it was a whole thing donât worry about it) and gets pregnant with like. the physical manifestation of the higher power thatâs possessing her. itâs about as bad and stupid as it sounds and also is like the third time cordyâs got mystically pregnant in this show and like the fourth mystical pregnancy storyline overall (you will be hearing more on that note in other submissions Iâm so sorry). after giving birth she goes into a coma, in which she remains for the rest of season 4 and the first half of season 5. SPEAKING OF WHICH DONâT THINK SEASON 5 IS GETTING OFF SCOT FREE HERE. yeah so in season 5 the show just FULLY starts trying to erase cordyâs existence. she gets mentioned ONCE in the first episode and then never again until halfway through the season where she wakes up, helps out Angel for a bit and encourages him in his fight against evil, and then goes quietly into that good night and dies so it can be all sad and tragic. Iâd call it the worst fridging of all time but even THAT feels generous because the whole point of fridging is killing off a female character so a man can be sad, and after Cordy dies basically no oneâs even sad about it because the show immediately goes back to pretending she never existed. she is not mentioned ONCE in the two episodes after she dies. in the whole stretch of time between her death and the end of the season she gets mentioned exactly four times. again, I counted. anyway the fun twist to all of this is that all of this happened because the actress who played cordy got pregnant before season 4 and joss whedon was so pissed off about this affecting his plans for the show that he decided to completely fuck over her character and then fire her and write her out of the show. so cordyâs a victim of both writing AND real life misogyny!! good times!!
2.) OH SO MANY THINGS they menaced by giving her terrible hair cuts, making her seem like sheâd get together with the guy she loves (and who loves her back) but instead she was killed and when she was brought back, she got possessed by an evil entity who used her body to give birth to itself. afterwards she was in a long coma and died. her character was so throughoutly assassinated
3.) She got demonically pregnant TWICE - there was this real sense of a womb/ability to get pregnant as like, a place for evil to get in. She got positioned as femme fatale and evil mother. The actress basically got fired for being pregnant, and when she agreed to come back for a single final episode she specifically said they could do anything but kill off the character. Guess what happened

Okay so I've been considering making a dsmp sideblog for a bit now, but there are some things that the Tumblr Help doesn't really talk about, ig? So I'm kinda asking you, since you run multible blogs. I'm kinda unsure about the "secondary blog" thing, since it has limitations that - at least to me - feel like they might slightly get in the way, or is that just me overthinking this? And do you have any tips on how to properly run and manage a sideblog or sideblogs in the first place?
that's really valid, honestly. sideblogs on tumblr aren't the smoothest thing in the world, but i think it's worth it for the organization, and tumblr has fixed a few things recently.
unlike most other sites (twitter, instagram) where you physically switch between two linked accounts and have separate likes and timelines on each, tumblr has it so all your blogs share those things. you only have one timeline, and when you follow someone, their notification will default to your main blog. i sometimes wonder how many dsmp blogs are sitting there like "lol why is this theology/aesthetic blog following me and liking my posts"
& when you make a post, you select which blog you want to post it to, which has led to some funny mistakes on my part lol
it's all about what you prioritize, honestly. if you like the organization and separation, like i do, then having sideblogs is totally worth it. if you'd rather not worry about extra steps, keeping it on your main blog is a completely valid way to do it.
as for what i do; i have a sideblog for every major fandom that i was ever a part of, and one misc/random sideblog that i haven't touched in a really long time. if you want people to know your other blogs, put them in your bio or pinned because otherwise folks can't find it. i have the name ethek in all the bios so there's a sense of consistency and people might notice that it's me, but i know others who have consistency in their blog titles (ie ethektalksaboutdsmp, ethektalksaboutdevilman). you could also have 0 consistency and stay secretive.
#at least they recently fixed the replies so you can reply from a sideblog now#before i had to do it as itsy-bitsy-icarus all the time#asks#hopefully this helps idk

Harrow Nova's mental illness
Harrowhark's mental illness is such a vital part of her character and I think any AU that doesn't address that is Doing It Wrong. However, under different circumstances, her issues would likely manifest in different ways. But how? As is, it's somewhat difficult (by design) to pin down what exactly her delusions are, since most of them have some material support in the story, and I think that's very important to Harrow Nova.
Basically, everything she sees and believes should have enough support in the story itself that it becomes difficult or even impossible to truly separate what is true from what isn't. Vibes only here. Like does Harrowhark have a truly special relationship with Alecto? Probably not, actually. Alecto loves everyone, and she loves with teeth. That sort of thing.
So what are Harrow Nova's delusions? Granted we're working with a very tiny sample here but I think the answer is clear:
Grandeur, manifesting as being chuuni as fuck.
Chuunibyo ("eighth grade syndrome" in Japanese) is often seen as a punchline. Kids who think they can throw fireballs or give themselves more heroic epithets than Achilles are funny, right? Well...what if they're serious? Most kids know it's fake and are just trying to be cool, but what if they actually believed it? Based their whole life around it? It happens, it's not good, and mocking them online is NOT HELPING. (It's not funny, stop it)
But think of the tone of Chapter 40 with that in mind. Read it with the knowledge there are two different layers of unreliable narrator. Try looking at it from another character's perspective. The weird little gremlin got out of her cage and is now swinging around a pelvis on a chain, calling it a holy relic. Worse, she's somehow got her hands on a sword. She declares herself with a bunch of titles and challenges the Cavalier to a duel. He draws to defend himself, and everyone scolds him.
This is normal for Harrow. It's probably an escalation, but no one acts like it's her fault. They react with pity, not scorn.
So while mainline Harrowhark developed religious and persecutory delusions due to her station, Harrow Nova developed grandiose delusions from hers. From talking to people who suffer from grandiose delusions, they can actually serve as a defense mechanism. The world is cruel, but if you're The Special, you WILL get through this.
Is that actually the Chain of Samael? It could be. Does it have any special powers? Probably not, but maybe. WE know the creche slaughter happened, and she thinks it did, but wouldn't it be in Priamhark and Pelleamena's best interest to try to gaslight her on that? Is she officially a cavalier secondary? Is she even that good a fighter or do people just not want her to hurt herself?
From her perspective, it's moot. This is her reality. Those are questions for Gideon's perspective.

Okay, so I just found out that I can watch the whole 2015 stage production of âShock Treatmentâ on YouTube and, like, I have⊠so many thoughts and feelings. It really does demonstrate how Shock Treatmentâs biggest flaws is just how unfocused and messy and⊠just needing one or two more rewrites to reach it's full potential.Â
Like there are a few tweaks to the dialogue that makes the whole narrative a bit simpler and easier to comprehend, the satire is a bit more focused on the core themes, I thought most of the jokes were pretty solid (and the more sexual ones offer somewhat of a stronger thematic link to âRocky Horrorâ) and now thereâs actually Shock Treatment in the plot of Shock Treatment!
I do really like how they tweaked the lyrics of some of the song to smooth over some of the remnant âthese were written for a very different RHPS sequel and re-fitted into this plotâ weirdness. I especially like âI they need some young bloodâ and the change to the title line in âLooking for Trade Fameâ and âLook what I you/he did to my Idâ (meaning Farley). Sometimes ya just need to change just one lil' pronoun and the whole-ass song makes a lot more sense.Â
But the biggest positive change this Stage Version brought is the cast. Because âShock Treatmentâ the movie just has way too many characters. Like, look at this compared to RHPSâ cast list.
While this is maybe a natural result of the setting shift from an isolated castle to a whole town, it also leaves a lot of the secondary cast feeling flat and with no real space to develop. Comparing both of Little Nellâs roles is probably the best example. Nurse Ansalong is fun and Nell's performance is great as usual, but sheâs just kinda around to be a RHPS nod and so Little Nell has Something to Do in this movie and an excuse to run around in a sexy nurseâs outfit. And these are all noble goals but⊠well, Columbia was an actual character, as campy as RHPS is, she was a character with emotions and pathos and tragedy and an important narrative and thematic role. Ansalong just never had the time to develop into someone with even a tenth of that depth.
(It also makes âShock Treatmentâ waaaay harder to Shadow Cast.)
So the stage version just cutting her out and⊠basically cutting everyone out except for Brad, Janet, Farley, the two Dr. McKinleys, Betty and Ralph just gives a much better chance for all of these characters to feel like actual people. Campy, exaggerated cartoony people - but definitely people.Â
Like, we get to spend a little more time on making the manipulation of Janet into a superstar feel more gradual and convincing. Which both help her work better as⊠basically the Emotional cornerstone of the whole story and make the villains feel more despicable and more competent. Which of course really helps the two Dr. McKinleys since all of Farleyâs other minions have been cut. In general they get more opportunity to say funny stuff and can really see how they use their faux psychology and therapyspeak to control people.Â
....There's some level where I maybe think this script went a little too far in the other direction. That it's kinda disappointing that this Janet didn't never quite go off the deep end like her movie counterpart did. In general this version's slightly more.... grounded vibe - compared to the Movie's kinda Surrealist Nightmare Vibe - is one of the things I feel most conflicted about.
Like on one hand, this kinda campy nonsense world where gameshow hosts committing husbands to mental asylums and living your whole life on a sound-stage are normal is one of the most compelling parts of 'Shock Treatments' satire and it's kind of a shame to lose it... but also this more grounded tone creates a story that it's easier to follow an, more importantly, emotional stakes it's easier to get invested in. I think the Ideal Perfect Version of Shock Treatmentâ that Exists Only in My Brain would be, tone-wise, in the middle between the movie and the stage show, but also maybe lean more towards the stage version?
The added details that Brad and Janetâs marriage has been hitting a rough patch because Brad has been fired from his job just as Janet has gotten a promotion (which I think is a detail from "The Brad and Janet Show" draft that was dropped from the 'Shock Treatment' movie?) adds some thematic resonance about the characters dealing with the Changing Times, the idea that Brad might feel emasculated with Janetâs success while has been (temporarily) regulated to the role of a househusband is maybe understandable but it is also understandable why it would frustrate Janet and thus lives her open to the McKinley's manipulations. Again, the characters are still kinda campy, still kinda silly - but having a bit of grounding for Brad and Janetâs relationship does help when this is basically⊠all the emotional stakes in the story.
Now, in the Ideal Perfect Version of Shock Treatmentâ that Exists Only in My Brain, the rift in Brad and Janet relationship wouldâve been created by the lingering effects of the events in the Frankenstein's Place. Janet would rather pretend they never happened but Brad is still visibly reeling from that time he got forced-femmed by aliens. And although the events of âRocky Horror' did definitely happen in this version, itâs mentioned as just a throwaway joke (âWeâve been through so much together! Infidelity, homicide, aliens, fishnet stockings⊠and thatâs just the engagement partyâ). Still, it was a funny throwaway joke - and the promotion-and-firing idea they went with makes thematic sense in this version of âShock Treatmentâ.Â
Farley Flavors also get a bit of a âboostâ from the trimmed cast but⊠honestly the changes to his character are the ones I am most split about. Because this version of Farley Flavors is generally better because thereâs a bit more⊠flavor to him. A more visibly wacky personality, a few more gimmicks to him. And when I first saw him I was actually⊠pretty hyped about him as the main villain.
Because, okay, the main problem with Farley as a villain is that, despite Cliff De Youngâs excellent performance, he really is just another Evil 80âs Businessman and that feels a bit bland in the wacky world of Rocky Horror. Like, the whole âlong-lost twin brotherâ twist is supposed to feel like the counterpart to the Alien Twist in RHPS and a parody of stupid soap opera twists in general. But⊠the thing is that even before we found out he was an alien, Frank was already an incredibly distinctive and unique character. Being revealed as an alien in the last act of the story doesnât define him.
But since Farley doesnât have as much going for his character, the stupid parody long-lost brother twist does end up being his defining trait and it makes his whole character feel lackluster because⊠itâs a stupid parody twist!Â
But since Twenty-Fifteen Farley is Fairly Far-Fetched right from the get-go this means the twist has more of a chance to feel more like the original Aliens Twist. Plus, thereâs bits of dialogue here and there that feel like Foreshadowing. Farley constantly reiterates that Denton is his hometown, and that heâs a self-made man (which connects to the briefly-alluded-to implication that he was adopted into a poorer family than Bradâs and that's the source of his resentment), him saying some very Ominous Things to Bard at the end of âLullabyâ
And thenâŠ. It turns out this version decided to cut the long-lost twin thing!
Which⊠honestly I probably shouldâve seen coming from the casting choices.Â
And like, I see the logic here. Obviously the double-casting gimmick does not work on stage, that was supposed to be a parody of soap-opera twists and that element is a lot more downplayed in this version of âShock Treatmentâ and like⊠since this plot point has been already been heavily criticized in the film version I can see why they would want to cut it.Â
But⊠itâs not just that I feel like this twist wouldâve worked better in this version itâs also that⊠cutting this plot point and replacing it with nothing just makes Brad - who is already kinda relegated into glorified McGuffin for most of this story - feel like he had even less to do with the plot and makes Farleyâs apparent animosity for Brad even more inexplicable and shoddy.
Like, Farley still says he chose Janet âbecause of [Brad]â so I guess weâre supposed to believe that he just finds Brad to be such a massive lameo that it makes him seethe with a burning hatred of a thousand suns. Which is an even flimsier motivation than that Twin Stuff in the movie.Â
âDuel Duetâ always has that problem that it was originally written for two characters with a very powerful well-established rivalry and emotional stakes (Dr. Frank Nâ Furter and Riff-Raff) and then had to be transplanted into being about these two schmucks who barely even know each other. And removing the Twin Twist just kinda removes whatever emotional stakes they did have and exacerbates the problem.Â
.....Honestly, I think the main way to really âfixâ Duel Duet is⊠instead of that one kinda âGirl Powerâ moment they tried to give Janet that I feel is a bit too heavy-handed and obviousâŠ
Just make âDuel Duetâ a Farley versus Janet song!
Like, Janet is unquestionably THE Main Character of the story with the most important emotional journey of all of the characters, she was the core target of Farleyâs manipulation and the focus of his schemes, sheâs the one who actually got to interact with him and developed any sort of relationship with him, the focus of this scene is on how Janet realizing she has been used by him, she already spends all of Duel Duet physically kicking his assâŠ
Janet should also be the one to musically face-off against Farley, especially if you remove the only reason why Farley has to hate Brad so much. Like, yeah, she does get to beat him physically... but because this is a musical - the Songs are the thing that gets the biggest emotional and narrative priority. The person who gets to Duel Duet with the Farley is the person who really beats him. And this is really moment that should belong to Janet in this version of the story.
And maybe removing one of the few Things Brad actually gets to do in this plot which is also his Big Musical Number would kinda suck for him, but⊠well, this version also gives Brad a nice lilâ Triumphant Reprise of âIn My Own Wayâ where he reaffirms his love for Janet and maybe you can expand that into his Big Musical Number and⊠yâknow, if the rift in their marriage was at least kinda about Bradâs insecurities about Janet becoming the Main Breadwinner of the household⊠Maybe itâll be a good resolution to his story to embrace being Janetâs little Damsel in Distress?
(I mean, I think this is an element in this musical as it is but.... but you could've leaned into it more!)
And with both Oliver Wright and Macy Struthers cut, that gives more material to make Bettyâs character more interesting. Without Oliver, Betty generally gets to talk about her ongoing investigation with Janet - and that means the two of them get to have more interactions and a more visible friendship. And on the other hand, She starts out as Ralph Hapshattâs cohost, putting on a very Macy-esque false smile and pretending theyâre still happily married. Itâs a fun, character-specific spin on the whole âfalsehood of televisionâ motif of âShock Treatmentâ.Â
(Also since Oliver is cut, it means Betty, Janet and Brad sing âAnyhow, Anyhowâ as a trio. Which⊠I think that means theyâre gonna have a threesome. And you know what? I support Janet Majors and her two girlfriends!)
And Ralph⊠really got the biggest boost in personality from the trimming of the cast - especially as most of the singing roles of these cut characters for assigned to him. Like, okay, I think something thatâs kind of a problem with the ending of the original âShock Treatmentâ is how⊠unambiguous it is when compared to âRocky Horrorâ.Â
Because âRocky Horrorâ has a very morally ambiguous cast - pretty much every character has some element that makes them at least a little bit sympathetic and also⊠well, if not morally wrong than at least an (Audience Participation Voice) ASSHOLE (but also yeah, a lot of them are morally reprehensible even when working against other morally reprehensible characters). And the ending leaves it ambiguous whatever Frank got what he deserves or whatever his death is a tragedy, or some combinations of the two. Not to mention the ambiguity of what happened to Brad and Janet; whatever theyâve been liberated or exploited or corrupted and whatever or not theyâre better off being left behind on earth or remaining in Frankâs clutches.
And meanwhile âShock Treatmentâ has a VERY clear-cut ending. There is a unambiguous differentiation between the characters who are the Good Guys, and those who are Bad Guys and those who are the Bad Guysâ Gullible Victims. And, like, yeah, all the Bad Guys succeeded in their evil scheme and and are now basically literally rolling in cash
âŠbut literally any character who has any redeeming qualities gets to happily escape this Nightmare Studio while singing a cheery song about sex.Â
Even Oscar Drill and the Bits, who are quite literally Bit Characters and have very little characterization or connection to our Main Foursome, get to escape. Basically just because what little we got from them made them seem like a nice group of young gays and they never did anything bad.Â
And all of the people who stayed behind were portrayed as such exaggerated cartoonish bigoted caricatures literally rushing in excitement to get themselves exploited. Nor do we get any moment for our protagonists to show any sort of concern or regret or sadness about these people who they've known all of their lives. So itâs really hard to care about them as, like, Real People who've been duped into being ground down by this awful machine of capitalism and conformism.Â
I understand the idea that having a wider cast makes Denton feel more like a Town compared to the isolated feeling of the Frankensteinâs Place, and that seeing all of these people fall for Farleyâs bullshit in their own slightly-different ways help drives home how prevalent and influential and powerful this capitalist proudly-selfish image-obsessed philosophy really is. But⊠none of these characters get enough time to develop into anything but shallow parodies of Society. Thereâs just not enough humanity in them to sell even an ounce of the tragedy of Columbia and Rocky's deaths.Â
So condensing all of these slightly-different characters into Ralph Hapshatt⊠that really made him the most complicated and morally-ambiguous character in this whole musical. Because, yeah, he is a self-obsessed sexist asshole driven primarily by a desire for fame and fortune butâŠ
We spend enough time with him to humanize him. To see how heâs struggling with internalized homophobia and how he does have his doubts about what Farley and Co. are doing to his best friends even if his thirst for fame keep winning the moral battle and that said thirst for fame is pretty obviously born from a desperate need for love and validation that this homophobic corporate world just canât give him.
So when the show ends with him being happily strapped unto to the Shock Treatment device he illegally modified with his own two hands because he just canât allow himself to refuse a chance to star on TV - on some level this is karma, but itâs also a grim reminder that even if our threesome of heroes are happy and free, this exploitative entertainment machine also 'just got to keep going', just got to keep grinding down other people in the name of mental health, the American family and quality entertainment.Â
And although weâve technically scaled down from a whole town to just one guy, this feels so much more tragic because as selfish as Ralph is, and as silly and intentionally-ridiculous as the writing is sometimes, he still feels so much like a person.Â

Owl Reviews Stuff She Just Finished: Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright
So yk I didn't know what to expect going into this game, I'd seen really funny dialogue of it and mostly got it because I was extremely hyperfixated on Layton. But I did NOT expect such an emotional rollercoaster of a game with themes that tie into both Professor Layton and Ace Attorney and utilizes the strengths of each series so efficiently. I did not expect this game to make me cry. I did not expect this game to become one of my favorite Professor Layton AND Ace Attorney titles. But it did so I have to talk about it.
With two successful IPs on the cover this game could have easily been halfassed but every corner of it is full of passion for both titles. I mentioned before how they build off and complement each other and I think that's a result of the people working on this game having an in-depth knowledge of what makes PL and AA work and what their shortcomings are.
For example (I mentioned this in the liveblogs but may as well repeat myself here) Ace Attorney games are often limited to just the courtroom and investigation, not to mention you're not going to see 90% of the characters ever again after the case is done. This is serviceable for the kind of game AA is but it makes the world itself feel a bit uninteresting. However Professor Layton games have you confined to one town and make you explore it in depth, with recurring background characters who all have different (yet basic) personalities. Because of this, the Layton segments where you walk around town become crucial parts of the game where you can interact with future or past witnesses as they go about their lives, making these witch trials feel like they're taking part within an actual community, which make the emotional beats in the trials hit REALLY hard.
In turn, AA strengthens PL by adding variety. Layton games can be a bit monotonous if you're not engaged since the gameplay mostly consists of talking to people and solving an occassional puzzle, and there's a lack of interesting smaller mysteries to keep the audience engaged while they work on solving the bigger ones. But Ace Attorney games thrive on side stories, they're what make the trials so interesting! So by adding the smaller mysteries in the form of witch trials and mixing in clues about what the Hell is going on in Laberynthia you make a much more dynamic story that never feels like you're getting nowhere.
Enough about story structure and nerd stuff like that though, let's talk characters!
I love the main four and have always loved the main four so I'm not gonna talk abt them. The original characters for this game were freaking amazing. I see a lot of people really dislike Espella (which is understandable since she's probably the weakest of the cast) but she's pretty alright imo. She's going through a lot of things with the entire town despising her and [SPOILERS] so it makes sense why she would act the way she does, even then I feel like most heartfelt moments with her were a bit forced, which kind of lessens the impact of the last scene. I LOVE the relationship between her and [ANOTHER SPOILER] as well as the dynamic she has with Maya though.
I LOVE BARNHAM. He's one of my favorite prosecutors, he may not have any deep angst or trauma like so many of my favs do, but he's just a well meaning dude who thinks he's doing what he needs to to protect his town, even if it means casting wiitches into the flames. He also goes through a little character arc of his own where he also starts to bend the rules, the only laberynthian to do so. It's fun. Barnham is my best friend.
Unfortunately I can't talk about Darklaw or The Storyteller without getting into spoilers but basically: I love Darklaw and think she deserves the world, I'm on the fence about The Storyteller and feel like parts of his character were extremely rushed.
The secondary characters are also great, you have your classic goofy witnesses but also some really heartfelt characters and relationships in the trials, this is nothing new for Ace Attorney but when you include the conscious knowledge that these characters are going to be cast into the fire then these mini stories are enough to move me to tears (Looking at you, Golden Court).
Anyway, overall a fantastic experience that caught me completely off guard. No notes. I give it 10 burning witches out of 10.
Oh. And also:
#once again spoiler free so i can convince you to like the things i like#sorry for the incomprehensible rambling these 'reviews' are essentially excuses to ramble anyway so#i have a lot more concrete thoughts on this than i did for ghost trick i think thats bc im familiar with these series and ik how they work#owl reviews stuff she just finished#plvspw#professor layton vs phoenix wright#plvsaa#professor layton#ace attorney

YOU GOT: KEIJI AKAASHI
ËÊâĄÉË matchup for @veggiesoupdumpling
ËÊâĄÉË if you would like a matchup, read this!
'i'm a leo!'
đ©âĄđȘ i'm pretty sure akaashi is a sagittarius
đ©âĄđȘ which means you are both fire signs :D
đ©âĄđȘ which usually indicates a very passionate romance
đ©âĄđȘ anyway here's a quote from some ppl who know a lot more about zodiac than me:
đ©âĄđȘ 'Together, they form a dynamic and fun-loving couple who can make all other signs envious of the greatness of the Leo and Sagittarius love compatibility. With both signs' elements being fire, they might experience the occasional impatience and intolerance of each other's grandeur. But, they will also exhibit endurance.'
ïž”âżïž”âżàšâĄà§âżïž”âżïž”
'i'm a big fan of reading, especially when it comes to psychological thrillers like the secret history and classics like jane eyre.'
đ©âĄđȘ omg i think akaashi is probably a very big reader too
đ©âĄđȘ i mean, he does become a manga editor post timeskip soo
đ©âĄđȘ he would really enjoy discussing those sorts of stories with you
đ©âĄđȘ and i can imagine that being the EXACT sort of literature he reads too??
đ©âĄđȘ like classics and horror.. and maybe mystery or fantasy too?? but horror n classics are probs his bread n butter
đ©âĄđȘ yeah i don't really imagine akaashi being a self-help kinda guy or someone who is into those action mangas
đ©âĄđȘ OMG y'all defo had a meet-cute in the library/bookstore where you reached for the some book
đ©âĄđȘ and it's so funny bc you were probably both reaching for the same psych horror book and are blushing and stuttering messes and can't even look at each other because your hands almost touched
đ©âĄđȘ literally being so cute and bashful meanwhile the book you were both reaching for is titled smth crazy like 'the graphic and grusome dismembering of gummy bears in the forest'
đ©âĄđȘ yes that is how i imagine all psych horror book titled LMAO
đ©âĄđȘ but yes , that is your meet-cute :3
đ©âĄđȘ OR maybe you're reading your book at the store/library and akaashi notices bc it's one of his faves n approaches you
đ©âĄđȘ or vice versa were you approach him
đ©âĄđȘ although if you were the one to make the first move he'd literally be internally screaming and be sooo flustered
đ©âĄđȘ just bc like your beauty has caught him off-guard
đ©âĄđȘ however if he makes the first move at least he has had time to mentally prepare beforehand
đ©âĄđȘ he is not well versed in the art of talking to baddies okay ?? đ
ïž”âżïž”âżàšâĄà§âżïž”âżïž”
'my love language is acts of service, both from me and from my partner.'
đ©âĄđȘ tbh this is soooo akaashi coded
đ©âĄđȘ maybe bc he knows you have a similar taste in books to him, he'd take on the secondary love language of gift giving (like letting you borrow/keep some of the books he has or just buying you some that you've mentioned wanting or that he thinks you'd enjoy)
đ©âĄđȘ as for words of affirmation, especially early on in the relationship, he probably struggles ot give you compliments in person beyond 'you look nice' because whenever he sees you he is just at a loss for words
đ©âĄđȘ so to combat that , he would start writing cute messages and slipping them in the books you read
đ©âĄđȘ he'd try to put then with your book mark but sometimes when he's feeling playful and mischievious he'll put them at a random page
đ©âĄđȘ so you'll just be reading a book on the bus/before you go to bed then all of a sudden find a note from akaashi with the most eloquent , well-written and sincere compliment you've ever heard
đ©âĄđȘ he really does have a way with words sometimes
đ©âĄđȘ then you'll text him like 'omg akaashi you are the sweetest đ„ș'
đ©âĄđȘ however he put that note in your book like.. a week ago .. so he is just like 'i am???'
đ©âĄđȘ as for acts of service, he's the type to carry your bags , even if you don't think they are too heavy
đ©âĄđȘ always will drive you places if you need him too , obviously he has important work commitment n stuff but if he's free n able, he will drive you where ever you want to go in a heard beat even if you can drive yourself
đ©âĄđȘ ESPECIALLY IF IT'S NIGHT
đ©âĄđȘ bro forgets how to act normal as soon as the sun comes down
đ©âĄđȘ like if y'all have gone on a date and it's finished at 8 and maybe the sun hasn't even fully gone down yet but it's in the middle of setting
đ©âĄđȘ he will INSIST on walking you home , or walking you to your car
đ©âĄđȘ and let's say this is the first date and you say you don't want him to walk you home bc you don't want him to know where you live, he will order you a taxi and wait with you until it arrives
đ©âĄđȘ and insist you text him when you get home
đ©âĄđȘ you may think of it as being overprotective, and maybe it's all the horror he's read getting to his head, but akaashi knows how unsafe it is at night time, especially for women and he'd be damned if anything happened to you
đ©âĄđȘ so waiting with you and staying by your side is the least he can do in his eyes
đ©âĄđȘ he doesn't even really see it as doing you a favour bc he's benefitting from it too?? like he gets to spend more time with you on the walk / car ride home so why not :)
ïž”âżïž”âżàšâĄà§âżïž”âżïž”
for @veggiesoupdumpling: hmm tbh akaashi is the first person i thought of for you ??? soulmate energy??? but if i had to say a different character, it would probably be ushijima

The Amazing Spider-Man #5
Published: October 1963
Containing: "Marked for Destruction by Doctor Doom!"
Synopsis: Doctor Doom hides away in NYC in an effort to use Spider-Man as a means to strike the Fantastic Four, and Flash Thompson is captured in Peter's place forcing the latter to take action.
Read alongside us here:
@frankendykes-monster : I had to look up if spiders actually communicated through radio waves or whatever given that Doctor Doom is the second villain in the series to now contact Spider-Man through frequencies attuned to spiders. I did find out that spiders can communicate through every available means you'd assume from animals aside from radio waves, probably a predictable end but whatever I needed to see if it was a real thing.
The Amazing Spider-Man has now been bumped up to monthly publication status, with #4 having been released in September of 1963. It's a quick way of realizing that the character was almost immediately becoming the crown jewel in Marvel's line-up, and frankly what a great issue to celebrate this milestone. You can tell we've settled into a groove given that all of zero new characters are introduced here, but we do get Flash Thompson and Liz Allen *and* Betty Brant as fully named cast members with their respective relationships to Peter also having been settled in; though I think it might be some time before Liz and Betty realize that they're romantic rivals. I love the subtle dichotomy between Peter and Spider-Man; Peter figures it would be cool to let Doctor Doom just kill Flash but knows he can't stand aside, more and more subtle hints at the character's eventual emotional breakthrough near the end of this run.
Something funny to me is that Jameson admits so casually that he's in the news business for money which is the reason for nonstop Spider-Man coverage. Funny because even in-story, Spider-Man is the little guy, surely The Fantastic Four or The Hulk are more newsworthy items. A reasonable critique on my part given they didn't *have* to make Spider-Man have three crossovers with that team so far.
This isn't a fan blog for the Kirby/Lee Fantastic Four run so not much to cover with Doctor Doom beyond him being the definitive comic book supervillain. Everything about him is marvelous and on display here. It's interesting that this issue takes place immediately after Fantastic Four #17 (Ditko was a noted comics reader, Kirby wasn't, hence when the latter handles Spider-Man in other titles, Peter just shows up disregarding anything actually happening in this series), but Lee doesn't leave a little editorial note pointing readers to that issue. Doom being able to whip up multiple new lairs in NYC is beyond hilarious to me, he's easily the most stereotypical character Peter has had to face so far but that's probably more than anything a showcase of how low the relative stakes have been so far. Remember when The Vulture was just hiding out in a barn planning petty thefts? Doom has a right to gloat about his prowess on multiple levels given that that's what we've seen so far.
One thing I'm not keen on is that we've fully entered an era where Spider-Man's webbing can do things just because an action scene calls for it, like here where Peter can make web balls that break open that reveal thicker webbing inside or creating huge shields to defend against ice attacks. There's a general rule of thumb on Spider-Man does with webs and this goes far beyond that, a rare instance of this reminding us that this is still the earliest portrayal of the character and not everything stuck (no pun intended).
This is our first issue where Spider-Man's suit is finally colored blue instead of using a soft purple as the secondary color. Lee's narration has started to enter that self-aware era that people constantly associate with him, and while it by no means detracts from the issue I can't say I'm a huge fan of the fourth wall breaking by highlighting that there may be better comics out there or apologizing for taking so long to get to the final fight, for example, but I digress.
@duel1971 : This story pits Peter against Doctor Doom, arch-nemesis of the Fantastic Four. The FF themselves donât appear for more than a cameo, allowing the story to focus on the conflict between Doom and Spider-Man. In typical bombastic fashion, the narration boasts that the fight between Spidey and Doom will be the âgol-dangest, ding-bustedest, rip-snortinâest super-characters fight youâve ever seen!â I donât know about all that, but the fight is in fact really cool, featuring some innovative panel layouts by Ditko and creative use of Peterâs webbing.
I love Doctor Doom but the moments in this issue that really stuck with me all involved ASM regulars. Liz Allan, who Peter struck out with previously, speculates that Spider-Man is a dreamboat under his mask. J Jonah Jameson admits explicitly that his feud with Spider-Man is a tactic to sell more newspapers and magazines, revealing how hollow he is beneath his bluster. And, most notably, Flash Thompson dresses up as Spider-Man to try and prank Peter and ends up getting kidnapped by Doctor Doom.
Doppelganger Spider-Men are a recurring theme by now, and putting Flash in the role is interesting to me given how he would develop in later years under different writers. In terms of this story, however, we just get to laugh at the bullyâs expense for once, and Peter has a devilish moment where he considers just leaving Flash to die. He does, in fact, forget to actually save Flash at the end after defeating Doom, leading to a very funny scene where Ben Grimm threatens to beat him up after the Fantastic Four find him cowering in the wrecked lab.

The premise of Netflix series Eric feels like a huge ripoff of the Syfy series Happy! !!!!!
It's been out for two weeks and nobody made this connection!
Now I'm not usually like this about art, I usually do not care whatsoever if things are similar, but this is too many similarities for it not to bother me. I can hardly watch this show because every second I'm like "that was in Happy and was better in Happy!" which is an opinion but it is just amazing how one thing can be kind of a flop and then a few years later something so derivative/reduced from the substance of the original comes about and it's just et up by hipsters. Also again my opinion but so amazing that cumberbunch is never ever in anything good, happy if I'm wrong bc I don't go looking for him so maybe I could be wrong but it's soo funny for him to be playing the main character in a shitty photocopy of Happy. Half of my feelings abt this is because I think Happy was really good (although I get that it's not everyone's thing) and half is that no one noticed the combination of same premise details that make up anything otherwise unique about Eric
Set in a dark grimy NYC
Similarly titled children's live action entertainment with costumes (Sonny Shine/Good Day Sunshine)
Main character's ongoing substance abuse and getting fired for it
Children seemingly abducted by unhoused, facilitated by organized crime
Main character & child's mother's bad relationship
Child's furry blue imaginary creature helps main character find them
Okay maybe it's not that much of a huge list but most of those could be expanded to two or three list items and there are probably more I haven't noticed because this is a spontaneous rant.
The main differences seem to be there being no holiday theme and the main character not having been a cop, with the secondary main character being one instead
not part of a comparative analysis, but a little funny that cumberbatch's expression is literally exactly the same in every one of these image results from the show
well actually I can make that part of the comparison too, look how much more expressive these are!
#Eric#Happy#Netflix#Syfy#New york#It's just so weird to watch something new and popular and feel like I've seen a way better version of this story already#But yeah 100% just my opinion#Happy was really intense but just thematically I feel like Eric is in the same or similar category?#Just intensity turned way down which to me ngl is boring and makes me want to rewatch happy instead#everything about Eric that isn't from happy kinda seems like a blander version of other crime dramas & existing social commentaries#Like sanitized mushy AI generated writing where someone just made sure it made logical sense and got a good cinematographer#Accurate set & costume design afaik#I wanted to compare budgets but that's not public information :(

OMG I AM SO CURIOUS!!!
Kadee:
Greed 10, Wrath 5, Lust 4
Zo:
Wrath 1, Envy 1 đł, Lust 5 đ€
seven deadly sins headcanon
thank you for sending this, teddy! all of this is is safe for innocent new wotr players!
Kadira
Greed 10) Would your muse steal anything?
As a child, this was less to do with morals and she knowing that she stuck out like a sore thumb. It would be incredibly hard to get anything when you're bright red and everyone around you is not. As she grows older, there's a moral complexity to how she views stealing. There are a lot of desperate people out there and she herself isn't above in stealing something if it will help the Crusade and the person she steals from has the resources to survive. She's also forgiving for that with others. She's not not keen on people who steal for fun - which is honestly a rarity. Even organizational crime is based on the concept that the government will not protect or provide for it's weakest links.
Wrath 5) What, if anything, provokes your muse to violence
I don't want to go into too many spoilers, but those who worship Shelyn attempt to avoid violence and try to defend. For the most part, Kadira follows this and if asked for another chance, she will not resort to violence.
However, there are times when dealing with demons and cultists that Kadira is moved to fury, notably so towards the end of the game when it comes to those she cares about.
Lust 4) What sex-related words turn your muse on? what words make them cringe?
Kadira doesn't have words that will turn her on quickly in an independent context. 'Play' registers as nothing until she hears the tone of it and the voice quality. Most sensual words, conventional dirty words like 'cock, pussy', and praise melts Kadira into a puddle of goo and encourages her to do or endure so much.
However, there are so many words that will make her cringe and turn her drier than the Gobi. Moist, regardless fo tone, will make her cringe during a sexual context. Most childish terms used in a attempt to be serious-sexy is a turn off for her. Childish terms in means of being playful/funny and sexy has a lot more leeway.
Zophus
Wrath 1) does your muse like to get revenge on those they feel have wronged them?
The demon that destroyed his home and killed his mother in an arson fire is still unknown to Zophus. He's looked, he's looked so hard. That was the reason why he became a Planeswalker for the Harmounium, he wanted to get the knowledge and possibly find the demon who ruined everything. He hasn't found them yet, and he doesn't know how to truly get his revenge.
Envy 1) does your muse get jealous easily, or does it take a lot for them to feel it?
While he doesn't get jealous over titles or material things, Zophus quietly suffers his jealousy in regars to romance. It's not the only reason why he doesn't try to get into long term relationships, but is a factor of some importance. The best way he deals with this, notably in a polyam situation, is putting himself in the 'Secondary' mentality.
Lust 5) does your muse masturbate? if so, how often, and how do they get themselves off? if not, why not?
He masturbates, though the habit is dictated to his environment. He didn't masturbate often when he was in the Barracks in Sigil, because it was communal living. When the urge got him, Zophus had to find a secret place to relieve himself and had little pleasure out of it. While traveling, Zophus engages with masturbation far more often from several times to daily, because he doesn't have to hide it and he can be as sensual to himself as he wants. During his time on the road with the tadpole, he rarely masturbated due to stress and slightly fearing people would read his mind.
