a much too whiny rant about fic icks

I die a little every time pup, cub or Prongslet comes up in a wolfstar raising Harry (together or separately) fic. especially cub - it makes literally no sense????? are you sure it's Remus John Lupin I'm reading about??? it's his evil doppelganger, I'm telling you. I'm not even sure I could stomach that word ironically.

Prongslet is fine in moderation, I guess, but only as an inside joke, only coming from Sirius and only when Harry's a smol bean. but when it's Prisoner of Azkaban compliant I wanna claw my eyes out.

it's even worse when those terms are used not just in dialogue but in Remus or Sirius' internal monologue as if pup and cub are Harry's freaking pronouns or something. my cub, my pup, cub did this, pup did that... just call him boy or kid or his name for god's sake. I once saw sprog pop up and was delighted cuz at least it's actually british slang.

and don't get me started on Hadrian(us) James Orion Potter-Black (which is just... why the fuck would James give his son the name of his best mate's horrible father AND the last name of his horrible family?? and why would Lily agree to that?) who's simultaneously Lord Potter, Black, Peverell and Slytherin (and, sure, I have a visceral reaction to aristocracy wank in general but even ignoring that - the last 3 literally make no sense since "Lord Black" is Sirius until his death; and both Peverell and Slytherin lines bled into other families ages ago. so being a Potter automatically means you're descended from Peverells as well as being a Gaunt - from Slytherin. and the last of those is Tom Riddle Jr. but that wouldn't make any Potters "Lord Peverell"s or any Gaunts/Riddle "Lord Slytherin"s. those last names are dead. smh).

but, uh, this tangent technically has nothing to do with my initial complaints, it's just that at some point I started thinking of this naming stuff in tandem with nonsensical nicknames as they began appearing in fics together. which is a double homicide, truly.

and look, I definitely understand the desire to make Harry's original name something else cuz it fits nicely with POC Potters headcanon and Dursleys being racist dicks about it, but... Hadrian? I mean, it's not really a big deal when the fic mentions it being his full name but both narration and characters still refer to him as Harry for short - that makes total sense. however when after the name reveal Hadrian replaces Harry completely, it feels super weird and uncanny, making it hard to identify Harry's character in the story altogether.

although I guess you should all knock me off my high horse for being the biggest hypocrite ever, cuz I myself have a headcanon for Harry's name, even if it's less elaborate than Hadrian. also less Roman? that's another thing I don't get - if you want to create a better connection between Harry and his roots, why choose a name of a Roman emperor for a desi kid? since he's usually explicitly desi in all the Hadrian fics. so it's not that I have a problem with renaming him, per se, I just don't understand the choice of Hadrian.

for example, I recently read a fic where he was Pakistani and his name was originally Hami, which is a nice idea, actually, and makes sense for such headcanon. mine is Hari btw (हरि in Sanskrit), since I headcanon Potters as Indian, but I didn't come up with that name myself - just saw it somewhere a couple years ago and liked it. I think it's actually a pretty popular hc now? anyway, it's closer to Harry than any other name I've seen and has many beautiful meanings that resonate with what I think James and Lily felt towards their son. now, even though I still prefer his name being Harry regardless of ethnicity, I do entertain this silly headcanon from time to time - so yeah, I'm one to talk, boo me.

now, I probably should shut up since this rant has been entirely too negative already, but while I'm on the topic of icky names/nicknames I should circle back to wolfstar cuz gods know I'll never be brave enough to talk about this particular pet peeve in its own post.

Siri, Remu and Remy make my blood boil. Siri could be kinda cute when it's a silly childhood nickname from Regulus, but if any marauder or Lily calls Sirius that - immediate death. Si and Re are a teensy bit better in moderation and if used ironically, but still stab me in the chest. a couple times for good measure. the only somewhat acceptable short form of any of their two names for me is Rem, albeit with a stretch and only because it's an actual version of the name Remus in Catalan and Russian. I know I'm being way too dramatic about this (just like with all of my previous points) but I just don't understand the need to shorten their names. at all. they're only 3 and 2 syllables long and so mystical on their own that any shortening just makes them simultaneously more nonsensical and less remarkable.

both characters literally have established quirky nicknames in canon that you can play with and even shorten to Pads and Moons if you want. Sirius is not a digital assistant and Remus is not the main character from Ratatouille. stop this madness.

plus James is right there. his name has a ridiculous amount of diminutives - Jamie, Jimmy, Jim, Jam, Jem, Jay and even Jimbo if you're into that. why strip Remus and Sirius' magical names of their charm if you can have fun with common names? but I digress.

at the end of the day, my pet peeves are mine only and I should live with them in fragile peace. this post is a personal rant first and foremost and if you disagree, I'm genuinely happy that you enjoy the things I can't. fandom is a playground and we can all find some fun in different corners. I'd also like to point out that I'm not trying to take a jab at fic writers who use any of the aforementioned terms, names or diminutives. I'm only one person, so if I stop reading your work because of my petty biases, it's only my loss and not your problem. hundreds of other fans will enjoy it instead. so keep doing what you love and writing those characters however you want, it's your right!

so yeah, writers and readers - don't take it personally and have your fun! don't listen to me being mean! I'm just making my fandom experience way too convoluted for my own good.

I was thinking about the language differences because usually in Spanish I say Daring "mi queridísimo" for fun and Darling is "mi queridísima" and then their names because like I said I think it's funny. I usually say it in conversations with my cousin what we are talking about and I mention one of the two with "Mi queridísimo Daring (sometimes I even add the last name like Mi queridísimo Daring Charming) or Mi queridísima Darling" but I feel like it doesn't have the same spark in English.

Why? Because it would translate to "My dearest" and the word "queridísimo" has 11 letters but the word "dearest" only has 7 letters it's shorter!! And the funny thing about the word "queridísimo" is that it's a long one and it takes you a little longer than normal to say it.

Why am I making this post? I was just thinking about it as a word that I really like in Spanish and it's even hilariously long with 11 letters, if you convert it to English, it becomes a 7-letter word only.

And that "dearest" would be kind of a unisex word and "queridísimo" isn't because for male is well "queridísimo" and for female is "queridísima" because you couldn't say "mi queridísimo silla" (silla means chair) or "mi queridísima vestido" (vestido means dress) and what I just said is incorrect because chair is a feminine word and dress is a masculine word. "La silla y el vestido" Many words are gendered, I think there are few that are like unisex. Like the word "grupo" it's "group" "el grupo" It sounds masculine and it is but there is no word "Grupa" so Grupo covers everyone.

Because there are words that can be feminine or masculine like "bello or bella, guapo and guapa" (beautiful, and handsome and pretty? or maybe beautiful again idk)

Okay yes the Spanish is complicated but it's really funny with words I can't translate to English but they're words in English that maybe I can't translate to Spanish so it's okay, every language has its things.

James can't think of anything else as he sips his tea, listening to his Regulus, his Sirius, his Remus. Listening to them chatter and joke and watch as each rolls their eyes bigger than the last. Listening to the life he always wanted and would protect with all of his might.

James loved nothing more than Regulus. He wouldn't tell that to Sirius of course, but it was true. Remus understood in the same way that Regulus was his best friend but Sirius, well Sirius is his reason for being. All four of them belonged together, the sun and moon amongst the stars. But the moon waxed and waned, making room for the brightest star shine, where the sun warmed the cold space surrounding the star and set to give it time to be free.

Sirius and Regulus end up with two brothers and another half. Enough people to love and care and challenge them.

Regulus can't think of anything else as he sips his tea, listening to his James, his Remus, his Sirius. Listening to them talk and laugh and watch as each jumps from their seat higher than the last. Listening to the life he never thought he deserved and would fight tooth and nail for.

Regulus needed nothing more than Remus. He wouldn't tell that to James of course, but it was true. Sirius understood in the same that Remus was the love of his life but James, well James is the air in his lungs. All four of them belonged together, a brotherhood of water and wine. But as blood spilled and poured, water cleansed the wound, where wine shared after numbed the pain of a wound unseen and gave a second heart to bear any weight.

James and Remus end up with two brothers and another half. Enough people to hold and scold and swat at them.

And maybe there are those that we love and maybe there are those that we need, but in the end, after all this time, in every universe, that might just be the same thing. Loved and needed, given and chosen, water and wine, moon and sun and stars... all pieces of each of us.

And maybe, just maybe all parts fit.

forgive me if I'm wrong bc i only read a section of the odyssey but didn't odysseus like. very much cheat on his wife on his way back to her? like i understand it's a meme or whatever in the epic fandom. but didn't he very much actually cheat on his wife? and delay his journey home in doing so?

not only that but i recall him speaking about how he could no longer call penelope his wife even if one of her callers raped her? while cheating on her. is that correct or did i make that up?

anyway I want to make it clear I don't care what the fandom does. nor do i particularly care about the musical. but i do think there's something to be said about erasing the inherent misogyny in homer's works bc the ancient greeks, like many patriarchal societies, were misogynistic. i understand wanting to maybe not mention that in a fun, epic adventure musical. but that completely mischaracterizes odysseus, imo.

it's just smth to see ppl venerating him as this outstanding man who loves his wife. when in the actual myth, iirc, he was Not like that at all

but again yknow epic is a musical retelling. so as long as ppl understand the epic canon to be separate but related to the odyssey, we're all good.

the fandom does that, surely.

Dead Ray's Comfort Series: The Monstrous Series by Lily Mayne

My goal is to be coherent in this review but I've yet to string together a solid readable sentence yet in all the attempts I've made to recommend it to all my pals because I am simply so fucking in love with this series. I love it so much I cannot think straight (pun intended). I'm not going to go over the plot as this is a seven book series with one novella and one short story anthology so far but I am going to rave about it, I'll give my general feelings on it, and I'll rank the books based on how much I liked each.

First of all, this is one of those series where I got to the end of the first book and just kept reading and rereading the last few paragraphs because I did not want it to end, and then, once I did, I sat there lost and feeling as though I had gone through an experience that I will never get to relive for the first time again. I even knew I had more books in the series to read and my first thought was still "What do I do now? Where do I go from here? How do I move on?"

I read one book of the series per day until I got to the final one, Lor, where I tried to pace myself to keep the high running for as long as possible. That's why it's taken me so long to get this out is because I refused to do so until I had consumed it entirely.

The world of this series is insane and amazing and fantastically horrifying and lovely all at the same time. A world where interdimensional rifts opened up and terrifying monsters streamed through and started slaughtering the world's population. Now humans are stuck living in military controlled cities where they can work for almost nothing, join the military or are left to fight for themselves out in The Wastes should they chose to leave.

Then there's the monsters, both the absolute nightmare fuel animalistic ones and the more human ones. Wyn is my favorite, from the very beginning and through the very end. Wyn is the best monster and his and Danny's story have my entire heart.

Lily Mayne is a phenomenal writer; she has snuck up on me and planted herself at #1 when it comes to authors (across all genres) I adore. Her perfectly balanced plots with just the right amounts of drama, comedy, and angst come with characters who are loveable and fall across a wide range of personalities. The plot never feels bogged down by too much happening at once and I love that it doesn't feel like the problems that arise have to have life-altering batshit insane solutions... Sometimes when you get kidnapped by a cult you just happen to be able to escape thanks to a disgruntled cult member and then sometimes your half-monster boyfriend sees the perfect chance to thrash your kidnapper in order to free you. As I sit here typing, I'm realizing what I like so much is they are big problems, complicated ones too, but they come with fairly uncomplicated and easy to accomplish fixes which means the story really can focus on the romance and these parts just add to the building of the relationships between the characters.

Okay, I'm starting to lose focus the more I think about them so my closing thoughts are: Holy shit I love this series so much, I immediately bought the physical copies of everything and I plan to spend my time between other books and the release of Lyri (hopefully in December) annotating them, perhaps I will share highlights of my favorite bits on here as I go through them again. Please Please Please Please Please, I will get on my knees, I will do anything if you read this series, I promise more than anything that these books are worth it. 10/10

And as promised, here is my ranking: note, the lower on the ranking doesn't mean I don't recommend it, it just means that these first four were ones I literally almost could not move on from, I will never get over them - but all of these books are stellar and the entire series should be read...

#1. Soul Eater (Wyn and Danny forever and ever, perhaps it's because they were the first ones but goddamn I can't move on from how much I love them and am so grateful they show up so frequently)

#2. Wyn (the novella between books three and four; it's Wyn and Danny so of course it's ranked second)

#3. Moth (Charlie and Moth giving some enemies to lovers vibesss)

#4. The Rycke (hjrfjkdwjkdjklew I am so fucking soft for Aury and Ghost ahhhhhhhhhh they are two precious beanssss)

#5. Lor (It strayed from the main group I had grown accustomed to but god Jugs and Lor are just so good, and it hurt my heart so much, and then it healed it, and it was just ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡)

#6. Seraph (Seraph has got to be the most monstrous love interest I've read about in any series and I adore him and his grumpy little Lilac fighting the odds and everyone around them to be together)

#7. Gloam (RIIIIGGGGG he's such a sweet little puppy and he will literally do anything, anything for Gloam who would do the same)

#8. Edin (Talk about a black cat and golden retriever pairing with Hunter and Edin, these two really make it work, and I hope Charlie did teach Edin the term size queen)

Would I read again? I plan to, I will be annotating these books and they are my treasured possessions now.

Would I recommend? What do I need to do to get this book in your hands right now? I'll do it. I think these are nothing short of a must read!
