The most recent session of Secret Life is so fascinating to me, because there's so much emphasis on this idea of heroes and villains in a series that's so full of murder. Like, everyone's doing it! What makes one person a villain for doing it and another a hero? Is it the cycle of violence, that the person in the wrong is whoever committed the crime first? Is murder excused when it's done for the sake of a task? Or for the sake of an ally rather than for yourself?
Scar: "So I'm just the villain of the red lives, the people who can kill me, the people who I was trying to kiss up to with the creeper farm. This is... secret keepers, why do you have it out for me?"
Gem: "All right, wow! I thought I'd have a lot more enemies, but actually I seem to be a bit of a hero on the server! Everyone likes me! Everyone has good things to say!"
Bdubs: "Want me to kill Scar? Okay, great, wonderful, that's going to be my mission for today! I'm going to be the hero of the server today!"
Gem and Scar both had tasks that involved hurting others on the server. So what's the difference? Everyone excuses Gem because it was just her task, but Scar's villainy was a task too. Do the others know that? Do they care? If Bdubs killed Scar, the narrative goes that he would be the hero of the server defeating the great evil villain. Task successful, I suppose.

I've been feeling particularly feral today so I'm going to go on a rant about the symbolism of the cane in Jekyll and Hyde.
Walking sticks like this during this time period would only have been owned by rich, respectable gentlemen. For this reason, it is symbolic of this idealistic, perfect man that Jekyll wants to be.
Hyde likely has it with him to keep some form of connection to the other part of him. Jekyll is struggling with his identity at this point and is torn between the two. He would choose his original persona if he had to decide (as he is relieved to do when he can no longer go out as Hyde) and wants to make sure he doesn't lose hold of it. The stick is probably his way of ensuring he is tied to it and it remains a part of him.
However, this cane becomes the murder weapon used to kill Carew. The symbol for the upstanding gentleman kills him, an interesting link to how it is Jekyll (if only a part of him) that carries out his murder. This act breaks the cane, just as it breaks that image of who Jekyll wants to be. As much as he tries to be perfect, he isn't. He cannot be good while also being capable of murdering someone for no good reason. This also represents him being taken over by the evil of Hyde and foreshadows the eventual loss of the better part of himself.
I also find it very interesting that the cane is split into two, just as Jekyll himself is. This cane is both a symbol of respectability and a murder weapon. It is broken into two parts. Jekyll is both a respectable gentleman and a murderer. He has two personas. The cane represents the duality within himself and reflects his two natures.
This is probably useless and boring to anyone other than me. I just really enjoy some good symbolism and analysis and very rarely get a chance to go into detail with these things.

I think I might want to write a 40 page essay comparing the representation of female characters in the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels vs the film

I’m not sure if this counts as a side effect, but you know how when link gets a light of blessing or blessings from the goddess statues, gloom gets taken out of him? I don’t think it was ever stated that all of it had been purged, especially since he’s still missing two hearts. It’s a possibility that it all disappeared when he killed ganondorf, but I think it would be interesting if he started to suffer some consequences because of that
oooh I would love to go into the effects of gloom sickness. Either during the game or how it damaged him enough to have effects afterward. Like long-term illnesses can have permanent effects, and Gloom is a debilitating illness in-universe and Link got the most direct contact with it. Not just from the initial attack but afterward while exploring the depths and running into gloom spawn.
I actually do think he ends up with more hearts than he started out with, like in the intro sequence he had like thirty hearts (15 per line) and he ends up with like 38 (or 40 if you don't fill up on stamina), bc the lines are longer. But in the final fight, Ganondorf still uses gloom to attack and take his hearts permanently away, and at that point, there are no more light shrines to purge him of it, so he just has to have some kind of effects from that.
Even if the gloom is all gone with Ganondorf getting nuked, it still damaged Link's body irreparably, maybe he has some chronic issues afterward, where some days are better than others, some days he can climb a mountain no sweat, some days he has to spend hours in the hot springs or having to rest in the light dragon's hair (during totk) and maybe he has to keep a piece of her, some of her hair braided into his own, or a scale or a spike carved into some kind of jewelry that helps him feel a little better.

please i love you i'm begging you bring back suspension of disbelief bring back trusting the audience like. i cannot handle any more dialogue that sounds like a legal document. "hello, i am here to talk to you about the incident from a few minutes ago, because i feel you might be unwell, and i am invested in your personal wellbeing." "thank you, i am unwell because the incident was hurtful to me due to my childhood, which was bad." I CANT!!!!
do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

I just find it so interesting how your perception of a person's creative works (art, writing, whatever) changes so much when you grow disillusioned with them.
