I didn't want to fall in line with expectation! I recently rediscovered my creative spark, and it's such a wonderful feeling! My love for art actually started when I was a kid, thanks to my grandma. I cherish the memories of drawing Halloween and Easter-themed pictures with her, and she was always there to encourage me, no matter how messy my scribbles were. She would highlight what she loved about my art and share little tips to help me improve over time. Grandma taught me that art could be pure fun instead of just a pastime! As I grew up, though, I found art became a bit of a struggle. Anxiety and depression made me constantly compare my work to others', and I never felt like my creations were good enough. Studying art and the theories behind it turned it into more of a chore. Plus, trying to make ends meet with commissions while I was unemployed didn't help.
Lately, I've gained a lot of inspiration from a creators on TikTok. They create the most delightful little characters, and their joy is absolutely contagious. Watching them transform a simple blob of color into something adorable without stressing over perfection reminded me of those fun doodles I used to make with my grandma. I had become so focused on making everything detailed and "perfect" that I lost sight of just enjoying the process of creating. So lately I have been focusing on creating for the joy of it. This happy lil guy I did today is the beginning to finding my creative joy again.

Art meme time! This meme has lived rent free in my head for a couple of weeks and now I finally put it together (because a new TWWM event just started and I wanted to get this out of my sytem before diving into it).
This required quite a lot of thinking, because in reality half of these characters would refuse from actually ever drawing themselves, hahah, but I just decided to operate under the assumption that they would be forced/coaxed/bribed to draw at least something. So this is what they would get into the paper:
Weary - Weary would grab the nearest ballpoint pen, draw a stereotypical cartoon ghost in ten seconds and be done with it. If questioned they would just answer that they are, indeed, a ghost and that you should be happy that they drew anything at all as ghosts don't really even exist.
Elsie - Elsie would be super flustered but she would give the drawing everything she has. Imagine a faintly sketched, not that anatomically sound anime character a younger teenager girl would doodle into her notebook and you have a good idea what the drawing would look like.
Song - Song would be so happy to get to draw! Their art would be bright and colorful and very child-like, with the corner sun and everything. It would be so pure that you'd get a sudden urge to hang it onto the fridgerator door.
Curse - Curse would hiss and spit and break half of the pens, scribble a few lines with so much force and rage that the paper would barely hold together, throw the rest of the pens against a wall and storm out.
Poe - Poe would give you a bashful "oh, I'm horribly bad at drawing" and doodle a quick little stick figure, which in closer inspection would give away that he actually has pretty good grasp of anatomy and stylization. If you pressed hard enough you'd find out that he's actually pretty good at drawing, just really self-conscious and insecure about himself.
Nessie - Nessie wouldn't have any sort of understanding of how it even is possible to translate something 3D onto 2D surface. If you'd instruct them to look at their reflection from the surface of water, they'd go "hmmmmmm" and you'd leave them to their study. You would then forget the entire challenge until a year later they would bring you their art piece, which would be a pretty unique, almost wood carving -like creation.
Mistake - ...idk, man. Mistake would barely hit the paper. Would the messy lines they drew somehow represent their experience in living or would they be just mindless scribbles? You have no idea.

Books
Taremis often found books in his quarters at Skyhold. Each time he returned from a mission there was a surprise waiting for him.
The elegant tomes of poetry and plays, fresh from the printing press were from Josephine. Most were in Antivan, a language he ached to learn. Equally elegant note was inside of each, recommending good poems or acts of the play.
The steamy romances, printed on cheap paper, with men and women in various stages of undress and entirely too much hair on their heads, were left hastily on his desk. Cassandra might have denied her reading preferences, but Taremis knew. He shared them. They often traded back and forth, wordlessly, save for a few underlined quotes in the books themselves.
The ever-growing collection of Hard in Hightown was, of course, from Varric. Taremis did not enjoy the serial as much as the dwarf would have liked. But having the Inquisitor show himself with the books bolstered the sales. And Taremis was nothing if not a good friend.
The seemingly random books, often without a title, were the most dangerous. They were from Sera. Taremis learned to open them from a distance, outside, using his magic. He did not want another swarm of angry bees in his chambers. When the books were not filled with insects, they proved to be interesting, yet confusing, reading. Just as much as the little notes and doodles scribbled in the margins.
The stacks of ancient tomes and scrolls, thick with dust and age, were from Solas. They touched upon rift magic, the fade and spirits. They were to be the fuel in the intellectual debates both of them enjoyed so much.
But the biggest number of books was from Dorian. Each one carefully picked, a note penned on the inside cover in his messy, cursive hand. The tradition began shortly after moving into Skyhold. Taremis arrived at his quarters from Crestwood, soaked to the bone and exhausted. He found a small red book on his nightstand. As per our last conversation, here is something to sweeten your night, Dorian had written inside. It was an atlas of medicinal herbs of the North. Beautifully illustrated, the plants that came up in their conversations marked.
After a year, Taremis filled an entire shelf with these books, each picked by Dorian, each about a topic they discussed. History of the Nevarran Mortalitasi. The culture of pre-Andastrian Orlesians. A catalogue of early Tevinter art. A study on the nature of the schools of Entropy and Creation. And so on. Each book had a humorous note inside and marked pages. They were a diary of their conversations. The last book was about astronomy. Dorian pressed it into Taremis’s hands as he boarded a ship to Tevinter, hiding the tears glistening in his eyes. It was a beautiful book. Black cover, embossed with constellations, silver leaf in the title. He scarcely touched it, afraid the smell of his lover would fade if he did. But on lonely nights the book was a comfort. Taremis wept as he read the note inside. For my brightest star in the sky, a little something to ensure you keep studying Tevene even when I’m not there. Remember we look upon the same stars, Amatus. Yours forever and ever, Dorian.

luffy ( @strawpirate ) says ...
ambush from above as he drops down before you. " ZORO! " comes the holler, boisterous as always. he holds something in his hand that he happily pushes it into your hand. a large handmade badge, not quite smooth enough to be called a circle, with the scribble of /WORLD'S GREATEST SWORDSMAN! as declared by the pirate king/ across the front, almost illegible next to the miniature doodle of you, swords and all. he grins at you then, curious for a reaction. " happy birthday !! make a wish ! "
abruptness in appearance -- but the swordsman is used to it, managing to halt quickly with luffy’s energetic appearance in front of him along with a questioning look. his own curiosity is quickly sedated though and out stretches a gift.
zoro’s first reaction is one of confusion --                                                 a clear look of what the hell is this ?                         before taking hold of the pieces in luffy’s hands and                        gives it a closer examination.
he holds the badge closer to get a better read of the writing, managing to decipher the words after a good five seconds of staring intensely at it and a small smile forming in acknowledgement of the declaration.
‘ by the pirate king, huh ? ’
it’s a childish looking present as all of luffy’s                             creations comes out to look like --
messy, unorganized, seemingly rushed                            ( but he knows it must’ve taken his captain some                           time, he isn’t the type to feel rushed )
-- and very much so representative of the maker. but the scrawled ambitions are real, fitting of who they were and still are. there isn’t ever an inkling of embarrassment luffy would ever feel when it comes to declaring these very real dreams ( the same applies to him-- that’s why they’re all here. )
a glimpse at the piece of art is enough to make him laugh and he’s holding it, facing back to the other, ‘ this is supposed to be me ? ’ there’s a light teasing tone in his voice and at the same, baffled, but not surprised ( art is a glaring weakness of luffy’s after all not that he has any place to say. )  zoro gives it a last look, finding some usage of the presents before holding it close to his chest to satisfy the other’s request of a wish
( it only took a second; wishes aren’t anything he                            practiced before, a silly way of getting what he wanted                             when he could just pull through with force to get it, but                            since his arrival on the ship, his crew mates are insistent                            ... so he learns to wish and it’s always the same simplistic                            desire that holds no risk, a wishful drink )
-- then he first clips the badge onto his overall, right over his chest, covering his heart and he holds the drawing in hand, thinking of a good place to tape it within the men’s quarters.
the smile on his lips never left ( it never usually does in luffy’s presence ) and he reaches his hand out to ruffle the other’s hair, ‘ thanks, luffy. ’ his gratitude is short, but he’s certain he doesn’t need to say more in order to convey his thankfulness towards his captain.
pending further curiosity follows, concerning the things he just received and he starts with the badge, pointing at it, ‘ did you make this thing by yourself ? ’ regardless of if aid was given, the swordsman was impressed alone with the presents content themselves and remains pleased with the new accessory and drawing in hand.

Artist Prompt.
Tumblr media
THE WRITER.
messy notebooks. messy desks. messy head. scribbling all over their arms. night owl. never being able to finish a project. losing too many ideas due to forgetfulness. passionate about everything. know-it-all. not knowing their own limits. trying to make flowers bloom, even during heavy storms.
THE POET.
quiet. visual mind. head filled with ideas. struggling to find the right words. not being productive for three months and then writing six poems in an hour. reading the entire dictionary several times. noticing little details that no one else does. laughing quietly. wishing to be enough, someday.
THE PAINTER.
failing at consistency. having paint all over their face, clothes, and desks. spending more money on art supplies than on anything else. notebooks filled with doodles, tears, and flowers. radiating sunshine. heavy mood swings. supporting, and being supported.
THE PERFORMER.
loud. not hesitating to speak up, for themselves, for others. trying to see the good in everything. rain, and the smell before rain. drinking more coffee than their body can handle. reading every book at once. laughing and crying at the same time. being honest. the helping hand everyone needs

Hi! I’m Autumn Linde. I’m a writer, an artist and an elementary school teacher, among many things. I believe curiosity is the best guide. Cookies are best served for breakfast (actually, anytime really), and sharing your unique gifts is a must.
I live, work and explore in the beautiful and weird city of Portland, Oregon. I love to write. I love to create. I love to live a life of wonder and curiosity. And, I love to inspire a more reflective life in others. I hope to do this through my writing and through my visual art.
I once read that the key to happiness is remembering what you loved to do when you were a kid and continuing it as an adult. What was that thing that you could and would spend hours doing, losing all track of time? What was that thing you woke up thinking about in the morning and fell asleep thinking about at night?
For me, that thing was creating stories through art and words, and sharing them with others. Now that I’ve grown up to be a much bigger kid, I still find myself returning to those things, coming up with stories and illustrations.
I consider my style to be narrative and whimsical. Through my work, it is my hope to inspire potential stories in the viewer or maybe spark a question to ponder about the subject they see—Now where would a rabbit get such a fancy bowtie? Where could be off to? Who lives in that wonky house? How was that made?
Or, better yet, maybe I inspire a timid artist to give painting or drawing a chance.
As an elementary school teacher, I make a multitude of decisions every hour, every minute and, seemingly, every two seconds. I spend my day reacting and responding, attempting to analyze and judge every decision I make in hopes of an improved outcome.
Needless to say, when the end of the day comes, I’m tapped. I’m exhausted. Even deciding what I want to eat for dinner seems laborious. I don’t want to make any more decisions. I just want to be. My guess is that you don’t need to be a teacher to know this feeling.
When it comes to art, depending on the project, sometimes I don’t always want to dwell in my thinking and judging brain, having to make those multitudes of decisions. I want to create using my intuition and instinct. I think this is an important balance for all creatives.
If I am working on a book or commissioned piece, I tend to work with much more intention and from within that place of thinking and judging. I love this work. I love solving creative problems through the thinking and the judging. But, it is also important to give myself a break from this place.
So, at times, I will pull out my favorite supplies— a Canson XL mix media pad, my Koi travel watercolor set, a water brush, a Micron ink pen, a mechanical pencil, and my trusty kneaded eraser — and just go for it. I don’t think. I work from a flicker of inspiration, a doodle, a squiggle and simply start, allowing myself to not worry about making a mess or creating something that will never be posted on Instagram for others to see.
This starting moment isn’t about that. It’s about play and intuitive creation. This is an excellent way to warm up before tackling a piece that needs more precision.
My favorite way to begin, especially if I am stuck, is by making blobs of watercolor on a piece of paper. Many art instructors that I’ve had the honor to learn from tend to guide their students through this activity, and it is one I continually go back to.
After the blobs of paint are dry, then I take my ink pen and make them into something straight out of my imagination. Usually, these little blobs become whimsical animals or crazy birds. What I love about this exercise is that it frees you from wanting to draw something perfectly or specific, which often paralyzes most of us when staring down a blank page.
And, as a bonus, a lot of my finished pieces come from these exercises because it allows me to work things out on a page in my sketchbook and get inspired by something that I never thought of before. Think of these as the rough draft to a finished piece. I also think it’s a great way to flesh out a style.
Sometimes, I scribble with the ink pen first then add layers of watercolor. I make marks with a pencil. I fling and splash paint, adding shading and more layers until it becomes something. At times, the watercolor I first paint with becomes a base layer for other media such as pastels, colored pencils or even acrylics, which I layer on top. If it’s one thing that I have learned about art, it’s all about the layers!
Working this way is a time to be messy. And, I don’t erase. In fact, I love when I can still see the original pencil marks peeking through a piece. I honestly don’t know how it will turn out, and that can be equally scary but very freeing. Sometimes it’s garbage. Sometimes it’s a piece that shocks me, making me question as to whether I actually did create it.
Working from an intuitive place is not only inspiring and freeing, but also healing. It’s a time I practice trusting my abilities, trusting my inner voice, trusting that my hands and fingers will work in sync with that intuition. It’s a time I learn how to grow as an artist and trust my abilities a little more, which I otherwise question and doubt daily.
In fact, I believe very strongly that in order to be a creative, you must practice trusting your inner voice equally as much as learning how to reflect and analyze your work deeply. Lose the fear, if even only for a few moments. Lose the need to control every decision at every moment. Too much of that attempt to control will zap creativity. At least, it does for me.
How can you practice using your intuition today? And in what way can you make space to rely on your instincts and let go of a perfect outcome?
I hope you make a scribbly, blobby mess today.
Happy creating!
