Thanks to TikTok, I came across an old sitcom called The Golden Girls from the 80s, which I am now watching for the first time. I was prepared for jokes that hadn't aged well, but to my surprise, there has been extremely few of that sort. There's even an episode about one of the golden girls' friend who is lesbian and it's all so... nice. Normal. Not one horrendously homophobic joke after the other like certain other sitcoms...
I'm not one of the people who absolutely despise FRIENDS now or anything, but I AM saying that The Golden Girls aged better despite coming out a whole decade earlier and had a much older cast than FRIENDS.
EDIT: Please, no spoilers! I'm only at season 2 :D

FEMALE MOVIE/TV RECS (PART 8 / COMEDY & ROMCOMS)
got inspired from a recommendation post so decided to make a list of movies and shows with female-centric stories/female protagonists. since i can't post all of the genres in one post, i'll split it into multiple posts and y'all can save or add to the list as you wish. (disclaimer: i have watched most of these, but i only know about the existence of others. not every movie/show on these lists will be my recommendation. my recommendations will be beneath the list with reasons. also some of these are way better than others in terms of storytelling/performance--which is why i'll list my faves separately):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Common Themes/Tropes:
-Quirky girlfailures and losergirls being disastrous (and learning they're still loveable)
-Women causing carnage (sometimes) unintentionally
-Women getting into shenanigans with their friends/sisters
-Features many equally if not more dumbass male antagonists (or sidekicks)
-Financial struggle subplot
-BFFs and sisters > everything else (even the d)
-Lots of sex and money talk usually
-The Struggle of Dating TM
-I Still Feel 12 & Stupid TM
WHAT I'D RECOMMEND:
Abbott Elementary (9/10) (too many amazing female characters!)
Such Brave Girls (8/10) (Derry Girls as adults)
Kajillionaire (7/10) (the protagonist is so weird and loveable, top tier ending)
Isn't It Romantic (6.5/10) (fun and knows exactly what it needs to be)
Fleabag (?/10) (haven't watched but I know it's good)
Kevin Can F**k Himself (9.5/10) (genuinely so so so so good some of the most clever and sincere storytelling I've seen in a while)
Hacks (7.5/10) (the two female leads are hilarious in their own ways and so human!)
NOT LISTED BUT WORTH CHECKING OUT:
What Men Want
Little
Nobody's Fool
Girl's Trip
The Other Woman
Queenie
Legally Blonde
Miss Congeniality
The Devil Wears Prada
Pitch Perfect
PERSONAL NOTES
Playing House is about two friends raising a child together, which is a premise I love. High Desert is a detective comedy (way more comedy than detective, though) with a likeable protagonist who is also addicted to drugs (that isn't the punchline, don't worry).
The Hustle and Queenpins were produced by the same company (and you can tell).
Twenties is one of the few shows that feature a stud lesbian as a central character (and she's beautiful!). Insecure is probably the most famous of black female comedy shows, though.

So, this is Carlos Gomez's work from his Instagram (hopefully there isn't more than one, lol). This is exactly what I'm expecting from the series in 2023. I'd be happy if it was bunch of pin ups of them being happy lol

Derek Yates, The Smiley Emoji and Eggplant Guy
Tumblr media
In How I Met Your Father, the middle-aged Sophie tells her son stories about her life in New York 23 years ago, presumably culminating in meeting his father.  In Episode 2.3, she doesn't remember the name of her friend's date, or what he looks like, so she calls him Rando.  He appears with a smiley-emoji head and an eggplant over his penis.
The epicode credits list him as actor/model Derek Yates, originally from Chattanooga, Tennesse,  "Bradley Cooper's younger bro." I think he's kidding.
Nick got his start on the Chattanooga stage, with roles including Hairspray, Sound of Music, and A Night to Remember. In 2016, he moved to L.A., where he won the "Ellen's New Gardner" contest on Ellen Degeneres's talk show.
Since then he has racked up 21 acting credits on IMDB, including cops, paralegals, nurses, a sleazoid, a passenger on the doomed Titanic 666, and Rando the Smiley Emoji guy on How I Met Your Father.  He claims to have played the Best Friend alongside Adam Devine in Isn't It Romantic, but I don't remember seeing him there.
His 840,000 social media followers are also interested in his beefcake photos.  Thousands of them, so many that I actually got tired of looking. Selfies, candids, and professional photos.  Always shirtless, usually bulging, a surprising amount of nudity.
Few photos of family or friends.  Two of his dog.  I assume that he's gay, since he has a photo from L.A. Pride, and another where he's in drag. And in 2021 Derek appeared at Impulse Los Angeles' Pool Watch -- Gay Edition, a fundraiser for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Five Newer Rom-Comsthat Hit like the Classics
On a cozy night in, my besties and I are 27 Dresses, Miss Congeniality, and 13 Going on 30 people. And with a certain holiday just around the corner, I'm ready for Love, Actually. But sometimes I like to branch out of my Bewitchd, Coyote Ugly, 10 Things I Hate About You cave and try something released after, like, 2004.
Here are some newer... sort of... Rom Coms that hit the same spot:
1. To All the boys I've Loved Before, 1, 2, and 3 I am WEAK for Noah Centineo, alright? I fell for Peter Kavinsky right along with Lara Jean. Also, Lara Jean is an absolute Pink Academia icon with her love of romantic literature, and a story that develops towards whether to choose a university for herself or for love. Not to mention, I want, like, her entire wardrobe.
2. Always Be My Maybe A perfect "will they? won't they?" combined with "ships in the night" and Keanu Reeves is there. I loved Ali Wong as Bertie in Tuca and Bertie- which is one of the shows I reccomend to everyone!- so I had to check this out. I wasn't disappointed. It is really sweet movie that made me smile.
3. Isn't it Romantic? Its kind of an anti-romcom that hits all the beats of the classics in both a send-up and a really sweet homage to the genre. I had so much fun with this one, and I would take a week in Fantasy RomCom Land!
4. Crazy Rich Asians Getting it out of the way first, I adored the books and I don't think the film is a good adaptation. BUT I think it is a lovely movie as a standalone, full of fun, scandalous levels of drama, and the same amount of OTT glitz and glam as the book.
5. The Lovebirds The Lovebirds is truly hilarious. Leilani and Jibran get themselves entangled in a murder mystery plot and discover a lot about thmselves and their relationship along the way. I genuinely laughed a lot and thought that Leilani and Jibran had a believable relationship, even in a totally unbelievable plot.

Who's more romantic, Ethan or Kaycee? And Tobias or Casey?
And also what's the most romantic thing the men have done for their wives?
Hello dear Sara,
I have been sitting on this because I'm so torn.
With Ethan and Kaycee, it's very easy to say, at face value, that it's Kaycee. She is definitely more hearts, fluff, and butterflies than Ethan is. But that's just Kaycee's personality; it's who she is, so of course she's going to give that to Ethan because she loves him with all her heart. But, being romantic is not who Ethan is. It's not in his nature, and it takes some getting used to for him. Still, he goes out of his way to make romantic gestures, big and small, because he knows it makes Kaycee. So to me, that's a huge thing in its own right. So while Kaycee is more of a traditional romantic, Ethan's got game too!
With Tobias and Casey, they're both such big, disgusting mush balls when it comes to each other. Casey is such a romantic that it is hard for me to even entertain the idea that Tobias could be more romantic than her... but girl... I think he's more romantic than her. Tobias always knew how to "lay on" the romance if he wanted to... but it was always a bit of a means to an end, not entirely sincere. So while he may have been the wine and roses type, it didn't go beyond that. Then along comes Casey, and she's the real deal, and all of a sudden, nearly 40 years of suppressed romance comes popping out of this guy. Factor in that he realized he loved her... the first person he ever loved... when he thought she was dying. So he never ever takes her for granted.
The most romantic thing, for both of them, there are so many instances it's hard to pick just one. Especially because I believe (so they do, too, lol) that true romance is not in big, expensive gifts or gestures. It's in the little things we do to show we love someone every day. It's when Ethan makes sure Kaycee has her perfect cup of coffee every morning. It's always waiting for her; she never has to ask. It's the way Tobias and Casey have a deal that he cooks, she does the dishes, then 9 out of 10 times, he does the dishes anyway. Those little things every day mean more than anything.
But if we're talking about big romantic gestures, I think the recent fic I wrote about Ethan cooking the same dinner they had at their wedding every year on their anniversary, then seeing to it that their daughter would carry on the tradition after he died... that's like swoon-worthy romance. lol
With Tobias, I think his biggest gesture was before they were even together. When he realized he was the only one she was comfortable going out of the apartment with initially after the attack, he made it a point to take her out weekly - wherever she wanted to go, whatever she wanted to do. Most of the time, it was just going to the bookstore they loved in Cambridge (where he'd always buy her at least one book) and then to lunch after. But he was there each and every week. He encouraged her and helped her feel alive again. The clincher, he was madly in love with her, and she said they could not be more than friends. He never pushed it, and he did it knowing the whole time he could just be helping her get well to end up in someone else's arms, but he did it anyway. To me, that is beyond romantic... it's what real love is supposed to be, selfless.
Thank you for the ask, my dear friend!
