CATALINA GARCIA (SOFIA CARSON) is looking for HER STEP-BROTHER. They are 26-28/SPRITE, and look an awful lot like CHANCE PERDOMO, DACRE MONTGOMERY, JACOB ELODI, JORDAN FISHER, UTP. Muns DO NOT have to contact mun before applying. Y/M’s mother married Catalina’s father when she was 10 years old. y/m was a Sprite, but didn’t care that Catalina’s father was human or that his daughters were witches. y/m and Catalina have always been close, even if she found y/m annoying growing up. y/m lived with his mother full time, but what happened to his father is UTP. Catalina’s father and y/m’s mother died 6 months ago in a car wreck. Y/m probably works part time in the library since the family owned it.
CATALINA GARCIA (SOFIA CARSON) is looking for HER SISTER. They are 24/WITCH, and look an awful lot like ISABELLA GOMEZ, CIERRA RAMIREZ (HALF SISTER). . Muns DO NOT have to contact mun before applying. **PLEASE CONTACT IF GOING WITH CIERRA RAMIREZ** If going with Cierra Ramirez, we would need to discuss whether there was an affair that Catalina was too young to notice or if their parents had gone with a donor to try not to have the same interspecies pregnancy issue. Catalina is five years older than y/m. Their mother died during childbirth with y/m, and y/m would have spent a month in the NICU due to being born early, any complications are UTP. Their father is a human, but their mother was a witch. When Catalina was 10, y/m 5, their father would have remarried their step-mother, bringing their step-brother into the mix. The step-brother is closer to Catalina’s age, and she’s closer to him than she is y/m. She still resents y/m for “killing” their mother, even though she realistically knows that’s not what happened. The two have always had a strained relationship, but my idea is that y/m wants to repair the relationship since their father and step-mother died 6 months ago. y/m probably works in the library part time since the family owned it.

Welcome to the West Side
Summary: Catalina (8 years old) and her mother Isabella just moved into Doc’s with Valentina.
Pairing: Riff x Latina!
A/N: This is a one shot directly correlated with my fic,”Lovin Kind” this is a bit of an expansion on Tony and Catalina’s friendship as well as a glimpse into Riff and Catalina before the Jets, in a chapter of Lovin’ Kind Riff and Catalina are talking about old times in the diner this is one of them. I hope you like it please feel free to read “Lovin Kind”. Thank you so much for the love!!!
DISCLAIMER: you do NOT need to read Lovin Kind to understand this one shot.
————————————————————————————
Catalina Pov
“Mami por que tuvimos que salir de Puerto Rico? (Mommy why did we have to leave Puerto Rico)”, I ask as she drags me through the streets of New York searching for my Tia’s store.
“Porque la Tia Valentina necesita ayuda en la tienda desde que murió el Tio Doc.(Because Tía Valentina needs help in the store since Tío Doc died).”, she says with an exasperated tone. I decide not to press the matter and instead help her find the store.
————————————————————————————
As we entered Doc’s mi Tia rushes to us leaving no time for us to set our bag down. “Ahhh Catalina mi nina!!”, she twirls me before planting a quick kiss on my head. “Hola Tia”, I giggle. “Isabella que tal el viaje? (How was the trip?)”, she asks mi mamá.
She glances over at me sending Valentina some kind of signal as I explore the store. “Mija, toma esta tiza y sal afuera. Solo quédate en la tienda y observa a la gente, comprende? ( Take this chalk and go outside. Just stay in front of the store and watch for people okay?).”, Valentina hands me a box of chalk shooing me out.
I nod and give her a thankful smile before exiting the store. While along the street I am careful not get any chalk on my white blouse decorated in sunflowers and leaves paired with jeans that fit to my knees and old tennis shoes I haven’t grown out of yet.
Sneaking a peek through the window every once in a while only to see mi mamá crying once more, she has done that a lot of that since mi papa left but, she tries to hide it from me. Since then I try not to make trouble for her, he wasn’t mean to us he just didn’t want to stay anymore.
“That flower looks pretty cool!”, my coloring motions pause as my eyes trail from the kids shoes up to their face. He was taller than me, smiley and had brown hair like mine though his was a bit wilder looking. “Gracias!!! It’s a sunflower one of my favorites!”, I smile; he is taken slightly aback by my use of spanish.
Could my friend and I join ya?”, he asks me gesturing to the box of chalk next to me. “No Tony we were headed to the courts”, his friend complains; bouncing a basketball. He was taller than me but shorter than his friend. “We can still go to the courts later let’s draw with..i’m sorry what is your name?”, Tony says.
“Yo soy..los siento..erm my name is Catalina.”, I manage. “Nice to meet ya Catalina i’m Tony and this is Riff my best friend.”, he smiles before taking a seat next to me. “I’d love the company pero, if you had somewhere else to go it’s okay.”, my voice sweet.
Riff sighs in defeat dropping to join us on the ground. “Could ya pass me the blue?”, he asks politely. I nod and pass it to him. “So any reason you chose to color outside Doc’s?”, Tony asks me.
“Well I know the owner.”, I mutter. “Valentina? How?”, man this kid is nosy. “She is my Tia. Mi mamá thought that we should move here and help her after Tio Doc died.”, I explain adding to my garden. “Man that sucks. I liked that old man.”, Riff adds to the conversation. I try to ignore his lack of emotion.
“I’m guessing if she’s related to you then you’re porto rican? You were speaking spanish right?”. Can’t they just shut up and color. “Si, I moved from Puerto Rico.”, I admit. “Tony how about ya lay off the questioning and tell me what the heck you’re drawing over there.”, Riff saves me a little.
“It’s a dinosaur obviously can’t ya tell.”, his voice slightly abrasive. Riff looks over at me stifling a laugh. “What’s the dinos name?”, I hold back a giggle. “Stanley.”, Tony says matter-of-factly. “Hello Stanley”, I giggle. “How ya doin Stan.”, Riff joins in my laughter.
Both of us belly over laughing while Tony examines his masterpiece wondering where he went wrong.
“Why are you guys making fun of me.”, a hint of sadness in Tony’s word. “Sorry superman Stanley’s great.”, the blue eyed boy pats his friends back. “You two are weird.”, I state randomly. “You’re not too normal yourself.”, Riff looks at me. “I’m new here you know nothing about me.”, I cross my arms. “You uh got some chalk on your shirt.”, his index finger pointing at my now green sleeves.
My eyes look down to examine the damage while mentally beating myself up for not being careful. He wipes his blue colored fingers on his jeans cleaning them off before reaching over and cleaning off the green on my sleeves. I thank him quietly and resume coloring. The three of us coloring in silence allowing the moments to pass.
“Mija es hora de entrar. Oh, ¿quiénes son estos dos? (Time to come inside. Oh who are these two?)”, Mi mamá opens the shop door. “Okay Mamá, um esto es Tony y Riff.”, I introduce.
“We should get going.”, Riff jumps up dusting his hands off. “Nah let’s go in and say hi to Valentina.”, Tony nods in the direction of the store. “You’re right I could use a milkyway.”, his friend shrugs before following us into the store. “Hey Valentina!”, the dino artist says. “Hola Tony- no no no Riff you get out of here!”, My Tia yells frightening me.
“Oh cm’on don’t kick me out i’m here as a customer and a friend of your niece here”, He defends quickly raising his arms in surrender. “Riff I swear if you dont-“, before my Tia could finish her sentence the boy grabs a Milkyway and bolts out the door nearly tripping over his own feet. But not before yelling, “Welcome to the West Side!!”.
I stifle a laugh as Tony approaches the counter. “I’m sorry here’s a quarter for the candy.”, he gently places the change on the counter before facing me.
“Hey thanks for letting us draw with ya. If you ever want to play with us at the courts you’re always welcome. I’ll come back tomorrow and maybe we can play again.”, he flashes a quick smile before leaving the store. I put the chalk away and think about my new friends.
“Catalina vente.”, My Tia calls for me. “Mande?”, my voice soft. “Tony es un buen chico, puedes ser amigo de él, pero ten cuidado con Riff, es un problema (Tony is a good boy you can be friends with him but, be careful with Riff he is trouble)., my Tia gives a warning.
I give her a small smile and nod before going off to find my space I’d be living in for a while. They both seemed nice well until Riff ran off with the candy. Maybe tomorrow i’ll go with them to the courts, I need friends here mi mamá says so. Besides there aren’t many Puertorriqueños here the Americans can’t be so bad?
————————————————————————————
~Present day Catalina in the diner with Riff~
Riff Pov
“You know it took me the longest time to figure why you ran so fast with the candy bar.”, her laugher filling the air. “I didn’t know Tony paid for it that day oh that asshole.” my chuckles join her. “I wonder how Stanley is doing.”, her voice slightly animated.
“Ya know I choose to believe Stanley is doing real well. He got a good job and provides for his dino family, wife stays home and cooks then their three kids are already in school gonna follow is pa’s very big footsteps.”, I ramble on a backstory remembering how Stanley was the first joke of mine she laughed at.
“Glad to know he is doing well.”, her laugher dies down to a smile as she sips her coke. “Things seemed so much easier back then. Tony was so nice to me that day too. He was my first friend.”, reminiscence clear in her words. “Yeah it was a time…i’m sorry I kinda turned on ya later on though.”, I pick at the plate of fries.
“Valentina had warned me about you and since I was such a young kid I kind of took her warning and didn’t allow myself to get too close to you.”, she admits hurting me slightly and shifting uncomfortably in her seat.
“Wish we could go back to playing with chalk outside this store again before all this Jet business.”, I try to lighten up the mood.
“Who says he can’t play with chalk anymore.”, her voice filled with mischief. “What ya gettin’ at?”, my curiosity taking over. “Follow me”, she says before darting out of the diner; a big smile decorating her features. God this girl. I place some money on the table before following her into the streets of the West Side.

Best destinations for the Children of the Catholic Monarchs- Joanna of Aragón
Joanna was, like her sisters, one of the most beautiful women of her time. Unlike her sisters Isabella and Catherine, Joanna had dark eyes, long brown hair and pink skin bearing a great resemblance to her father. The infanta was not very devout, but she kept it a secret and was a passionate girl like her mother. The princess was attached to her siblings and attended the marriage between her sister Isabella hers with Prince Alfonso of Portugal. Joan and her brother John were betrothed to the sons of Emperor Maximilian I, Archdukes Philip and Margaret of Habsburg.
Joanna traveled to Flanders in 1496 and after a long wait, the couple finally met, feeling a great passion for each other. The couple married quickly and unleashed their great passion, but this great love and passion did not last long ... Felipe was a very attractive young man, but a very womanizer, and after Joanna became pregnant, the Archduke looked for young Austrians and the ladies of his wife.
Those infidelities hurt the infanta a lot and she continually searched for her husband to prevent her from having romances with other women. The relationship became toxic and it was said that Joanna was crazy about Felipe, since she even ordered that one of her husband's lovers had her hair and face cut off. Despite all these percans, the archdukes were very fertile and had 10 children in common who reached a good age:
Eleanor of Austria (1498-1568) She was Duchess of York by marrying Henry Tudor, but she only had three children: Eleanor, Eugenia and Maximilian. Following her divorce in 1527, she married Frederick II of the Palatinate in 1531 and they had a son, Frederick III.
Charles V of Austria (1500-1558) He was Emperor of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire. Charles was called "El Carlo Magno Austrian" for his fights with France and the bravery of him in battle. He married his cousin Isabella of Portugal and they had 5 children: Philip II, Maria, Ferdinand, Joanna and John.
Isabella of Austria (1501-1545) She was queen consort of Denmark by marrying Christian II. Isabella had 6 children with her first husband: John II, Maximilian, Philip, Dorothea, Christina and Henry. When her husband died in 1523, she married Christian Duke of Schleswig and Holstein and they had 3 children: Frederick, Anne and Magnus.
Ferdinand I of Austria (1503-1564) He was regent and king of Bohemia-iure uxoris. He married Anne of Hungary and they had 15 children together. His wife was declared Queen of Bohemia with Ferdinand, dividing the territories of Hungary and Bohemia.
Mary of Austria (1505-1569) She was queen consort and regent of Hungary by marrying Louis II of Hungary. The couple had a son: Louis III and when her husband died in 1531, Maria became the regent of her son for 10 years.
Catherine of Austria (1507-1580) She was Duchess of Viseu by marrying her cousin, John of Avis. Catalina had 4 living children with her husband: Manuel, Felipe, Maria Manuela and Juan Manuel.
John of Austria (1509-1588) He was cardinal and confidant of Pope Clement VII. Juan had an affair with a bohemian maid with whom he had 3 children: Alessandro, Anna Joanna and Federica.
Henry of Austria (1511-1571) was Duke of Brabant from 1549 to his death. He married Sofia Jagellion and they had 6 children: Sofia, Bona, Enrique, Ursula, Maria and Teobaldo. He had a great enmity with his brother the Emperor.
Margaret of Austria (1514-1599) she became a nun after the death of her father in 1529. She was the oldest of the Emperors' children.
Cuneguda of Austria (1516-1539) she was Duchess of Florence by marrying Alessandro de 'Medici and they had two daughters: Alessandra and Juliana. She died after an abortion and her daughters would be one of the richest women of her time.
Joanna was popular for her high fertility and despite being unloving in her early years, the Infanta came to love her children, especially her daughters Leonor, Isabella and Catalina. Her relationship with Felipe went from bad to worse, but even so the Dukes of Burgundy shared the bed to bring more children and unleash her deep passions.
In 1519 her father-in-law, Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire, died, and her husband was crowned Philip I of the Holy Roman Empire, with Joanna being her empress consort. After being crowned, the couple distanced themselves and Joanna little by little lost that obsessive love she felt for Philip, focusing more on her children and her own hobbies.
Joanna was popular in the Holy Empire, initially due to her obsessive love for her husband and her thirst for pleasure, but as time passed, she was seen as a woman of strong, passionate and very intelligent character as she was moving away from her obsession. by Felipe. Even so, many nobles nicknamed her "Joanna The Mad" and it is said that she herself came to approve of this nickname, stating that "I am crazy, but I am the empress and they are my subordinates, so they are serving a crazy empress".
Despite being only the empress consort, Joanna stood out in Austrian politics and came to meet with the council instead of Emperor Philip, who only squandered the money of the Empire on his pleasures. The empress would get to meet with foreign ambassadors and establish the marriages of some of her children with her eldest son, Carlos with whom she had a somewhat tumultuous relationship due to her different ways of thinking. Even so, Carlos came to admire the character and courage of his mother when it came to ordering.
In 1529 Felipe I "The Fair" or "The Felón" died suddenly due to a fall from a horse after an escape to see one of his lovers. Joanna bitterly mourned the death of her husband and mourned her for 2 years despite the fact that her marriage was a great disaster. The empress dowager attended the coronation of her eldest son, Charles V of the Holy Empire and he appointed his mother along with his wife Isabella as regents of the Empire in his absence.
Joanna was a cold and capable regent, while her daughter-in-law was softer and more dedicated to the people, coming to have some disagreements with Isabel even though the empress dowager came to say that the new empress was the best daughter-in-law she could have and that she was worthy of the Empire. The crazy woman came to act as a solo regent when her son and her family undertook long trips to their many territories, even though these jobs affected her health, suffering from severe headaches, back and leg pain, doing her work from her bedroom .
Despite being a somewhat cold mother, Joanna suffered with the deaths of some of her children, especially her youngest daughter, Cuneguda in 1539 after having an abortion. Her work as regent and the deaths of some of her children, were turning off her health and Joanna took refuge a little in religion. In 1545 her daughter Isabella passed away and Joanna came to say that she was murdered by her second husband or his father. This death caused the dowager Empress to take refuge in the town of Tordesillas with her daughter Margaret, who was a nun.
Joanna lived in that municipality for the rest of the days where she was continuously visited by her children, her grandchildren and her younger sister, María of Aragón, who used to visit Spain and the Holy Empire after her widow. In 1550 Joanna “The Mad” suffered a cardiac arrest while she was walking in her residence in Tordesillas and she died that same moment at the age of 71, she being the daughter of the Catholic kings who died after 60 years of age.

Her family Part 2-Isabella I of Castile-paintings, iluminations, stonework
I tried my best to find how each painting and depiction is called, and how it is dated and chronologically line them. But often I found myself not agreeing with the dates, and I’ll explain why each time.
Tumblr media
Isabella was strawberry blond. Not auburn, not raven, strawberry blond and dark shade of golden strawberry blond to that. That colour of hair really resembles liquid gold, but as any strawberry blond hair it can very change depending on light and can go sometimes more towards blond or golden, sometimes way more towards red. And because it is its dark variant it can even seem as light brown or light reddish brown. And it is still same hair!
But raven hair, that is due to darkening of pigments and usually it is also reason why her originally golden dress sometimes nowadays looks brown. She had golden hair, and golden dress and now both is brown, because painter mixed same pigments to paint it.
Enjoy.
Wedding portrait of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile  (Avila Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Convento de las Augustinas, Spain)-cca 1469
Tumblr media
Isabella’s hair has darkened in this one, to almost raven. Too bad it wasn’t only one. Painting was originally larger, probably half-length(hands included).
Virgin of the catholic monarchs(Museo del Prado, Madrid):
Tumblr media
It is assumed this painting is c.1491/3. In 15th and early 16th century sometimes royal children got depicted as much older than they were.
And very often, by number of royal children in painting in them, you can date portrait from this time-period. Because as soon as child got born, it got to group paintings(and often was painted as teen or adult instead of toddler they were).
(unless it was heir, who depicted on its own)
In this painting there are just princess Isabella and prince Juan. Yet Juana was just one year younger than Juan. Hence very likely this painting is from before Juana was born, but after Juan was born. Which pinpoints it to 1478/1479. Just my opinion.
-closeup on Isabella:
Tumblr media
Dark golden strawberry blond in this case looks almost as lighter shade of reddish brown. (this has not darkened.)
The Virgin of Mercy with the Family of the Catholic Monarchs(The National Gallery of Arts.Washington D.C., USA) by Diego de la Cruz and Workshop -supposedly cca 1486:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we have 3 royal children. Same logic as before. Youngest here is Juana, born in 1479 but there is no Maria, born in 1482.
Hence, in my opinion this is painting was done between 1479 to 1482 prior to Maria being born.
Isabella’s hair in this painting is very red, it can happen with dark golden strawberry blond hair too. Important here is that her eldest daughter shared mother’s coloring. She is commonly not included on that list(only Juana and Catalina are).
(Note here that Ferdinand and Juan have both very light brown hair, almost blond, nowhere close to raven-haired Ferdinand, we think about).
Tumblr media
In other version Ferdinand’s hair is much darker, ends lower and he isn’t clean-shaven, Isabella’s locks are painted over. The version on museum’s webpage is the previous one, this might have been prior to conservation work done.
Another thing of note here are sleeves of Juana(younger girl), she has ‘slashed’ openings around shoulders and also 3 between elbow and wrist. It’s little hint of fashion about to come.
Next painting is included on this list solely, because I think it might be Isabela. You be the judge:
Life of St. Thomas in India, the marriage feast of the King by Alonso de Sedano( Museo Colegiata San Cosme y San Damian, Covarrubias, Spain):
Tumblr media
This is reproduction, not original, but I looked at the female figure and immediately thought-oh Isabella’s portrait I’ve never seen before. But in the description no mention of her. I couldn’t find museum’s webpage, so this is the quality we’re stuck with.  If it is truly not identified as her, it is big shame!
Tumblr media
There are several reasons why I think it is Isabella. Features match, she got depicted with St.Thomas before, and I think this might be same jewel:
Tumblr media
C probably stands for Castile. I suspect early to mid 1480s. Painter was active from cca 1485(but could be earlier). The sleeves with 3 slashes and openings on upper arm, remind me most the fashion of the previous two paintings(especially the first one). I suspect it is around same time or after.
With dating of next one I will help myself with depiction of woman which is not Isabella, but Mencía de Mendoza y Figueroa:
Tumblr media
Look closely at her sleeve-three cuts, but through one fabric hangs down much lower and there is no verdugado(early form of farthingale),which appeared in late 1470s and became popular in 1480s. (It got covered in mid 1500s and lines were no longer visible, but here is missing characteristic shape of verdugado).
This fashion seems as logical transition between previous one and next one and it is probably early to mid 1480s.
Ilumination of Isabella with 3 daughters sharing her looks, supposedly cca 1482
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe it might be later, maybe mid to late 1480s.
(I found one spanish texts which says these might even be 1490-92. It’d be extremely easy for somebody to write by mistake 1482 instead of 1492.)
Queen Isabella I of Spain, (Royal Trust Collection, UK)-c.1470-1520
Tumblr media
It’s almost exact mirror image of one just bellow(also same size) except pattern of fabric and probably was done around same time.(And both have darkened hair).  Isabella looks slightly younger in this one though, so I am going to say this one is cca late 1480s, early 1490s.
National trust also stated that this painting(and matching painting of Ferdinand) was first recorded in the collection of Henry VIII at Whitehall in 1542. You know what means! Either Queen Catherine brought these painting with her from Spain or she receive it later on from relatives. Either way, they would be among her things! She had portraits of her parents!
By the way the round fruit we see on her dress is probably not pomegranate, because pomegranate is not completely round. I couldn’t figure out what it was.
La reina Isabel la Católica(Museo del Prado, Spain) supposedly by Juan de Flandes(who came to Spain cca 1496), but museum has it labelled as by anonymus and dated cca 1490.
Tumblr media
I agree that this is probably early to mid 1490s.
How Isabella got older, she started to wear simpler fashion with no openings around shoulders(probably to keep warmer), however the fabric of the dress was not brown originally. It’s supposed to be cloth of gold and silver. (truly mirroring the one above in splendor)
But just as Isabella’s golden hair darkened to brown, so did the golden color of dress. (painter used same pigment mixture to do both).
It is most likely not tulip on her left(our right) but pomegranate(you can see the branch from which it grow). Fruits that got to our shops these days usually have standartized size(if they are bigger and smaller supermearkets won’t buy them, doesn’t mean they don’t gow in such sizes)-smaller pomegranate has this shape and when turning from flower to fruit, they even can have the edge we see on that dress, going on pomegranate’s side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isabel la Católica by Juan de Flandes(Palacio Real, Madrid), cca 1500-04
Tumblr media
I would bit extend the timeframe to 1497-1504. She looks defeated in the painting, tbh. She is obviously grief-striken. She could be mourning for her son( died 1497). That really was huge blow to Isabella and her health. But sadly her eldest daughter and grandson Miguel were to fallow.(in 1498 and 1500).
I read that Miguel died in his grandmother’s arms and perhaps this is painted after these 3 big blows to Isabella.
Hair looks differently in each version of painting. In this it is very red and her nose and lower lip look bigger than in any other painting of her (probably sign of her health worsening). Only in marriage portrait and in this painting is translucent veil(sheer linen) added to her outfit and cap probably going under cofia. This might be modesty thing, but note that never she hides her hair completely. Hence most costumers never get her head-wear correct. Even very late in her life she didn’t hide her hair completely. Around rest of western Europe special white linen headwear was worn during mourning throughout 16th century, i wonder if this was Spanish version of same habit.
Tumblr media
detail of blackwork:
Tumblr media
-detail of Jewelry: another person who made pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela?
Tumblr media
Ferdinand and Isabella with Juana-supposedly cca 1482
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I suspect this one is grossly misdated. There’d be no reason for Isabella and Ferdinand to be depicted solely with just Juana in 1482. Their heir would still be their son. This would only make sense after she became heir. Hence after 1500.
Or this is not Juana!(despite the text). Isabella was heir since 1497, it could have been supposed to depict her, but before manuscript was finished, there could have been more deaths in family.(would explain text).
(verdugado and sleeves rule out possibility that this is prior to 1478( when Juan was born) when Isabella was still only child and hence heir).
I suspect this is very late 1490s or early 1500s. Could have been done in 1502/3 when Juana visited Spain.
The fashion is very similar to illumination of Juana as Queen(after she arrived to Spain in 1506) with Philip:
Tumblr media
(Juana by this point had 3 daughters too) Only difference is that by this time verdugado started to be covered and you could no longer see the lines, only the shape.
The posthumous paintings of Isabella include some very recognizable paintings-the most famous example:
Virgin of the Fly-because there is a fly on madonna’s knee,(Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, Toro, Spain)-supposedly cca 1500
Tumblr media
The fashion of woman on right is Burgundian/Neatherlandish, not at all Spanish fashion. No way it is Isabella while alive, and officially it is St. Catherine. But if it was supposed to be Isabella(and the woman has her golden hair), it was made outside of Spain and is about as true to Isabella as King Manuel’s family portrait the Fons Vitae. Not at all!(Because in it his entire family and everybody in crowd is dressed in Netherlandish style.) Way more likely to be depicted in this fashion would be Juana. But by the time the middle part of this size became fashionable she was under house arrest in Spain. Doesn’t mean it couldn’t be inspired by her.
More posthumous depictions(with fashion also not at all from her lifetime):
Tumblr media
I think it might have been inspired by potrait of her granddaughter Maria Emanuela of Portugal and by Isabella’s last portrait):
Tumblr media
The one bellow is actually based upon painting of Empress Isabella(without doubt):
Tumblr media
I’d also like to point out there is statue of Isabella in Granada Cathedral by Burgundian sculptor Philippe de Vigarny:
Tumblr media
It was probably first painted in 16th century using period dyes, hence hair also being dark. But I’d like to point here why here the dress looks so different from other examples. It’s because spanish dress could have upper gown(which in this case is wrapped around her right shoulder and on her back) and lower gown-From front it doesn’t look as if she is wearing verdugado but from side it looks like she is. You can also see the rather high waist(it reminds me of Regency dress in Pride and Prejudice in that aspect, but waist is bit lower than in regency dress).
I am not sure what is going on on her left arm(our right), it looks to me as if somebody chiselled these out because they made mistake or damaged the statue and tried to mask it. It doesn’t look like original feature.  You can also see here how big cofia(the headwear) is as oposed to in paintings:
Tumblr media
By the way this is girdle with verdugado-like pattern, not verdugado showing through cut in the dress. (hand me fooled for moment)
Tumblr media
Meaning the verdugado is already hidden. I thought it happened in Juana’s time as Queen, but it might have happened in Isabella’s already. Apart of the strange cuts on left arm, this is excellent showcase of spanish fashion of that time and I think it could be fashion around Isabella’s death.
I couldn’t find when de Virgdany has made the sculputure exactly , he was in spain since 1499 and around 1521 he was involved in making main altar piece for royal chapel of Granada. So it could be done in this timeframe, and sculptor would be in spain when this fashion was worn and would know how it is supposed to look like.
Her (and Ferdinand’s tomb) tomb by Domenico Fancelli, completed in 1517:
Tumblr media
it doesn’t do justice to her looks, I suspect it was was done based upon her dead mask. (And few of us look good on our deadbed):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But sculptor was based in Spain since cca 1502 and I wonder if he met her, because aside from face being unflattering, it’s rather good resemblence(just take it with pinch of salt).
Tumblr media
Fashion wise, though it looks different from examples we seen so far, it is not.
But it is the lower gown, with simple sleeves(Isabella started preffering those as she got older and sicker) with bejewelled necklace with cross medalion, which is weighting upon the gown in such way, it is not hanging loose as it would if person was sitting or standing. At first I thought waistline was bit too low, but Juana’s tomb also shows waistline around same place, hence perhaps it lowered towards end of Isabella’s lifetime or afterwards.

Beside The Dying Fire (part ten)
[DnD AU with the tour!verse]
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9
Word count: 4271
------------------------------
Hot. Scorching. Sweltering. Searing. Balmy. Parching. Oven-like. Those, and so many other words could describe the desert Katherine and her companions were trekking through, Katherine just couldn’t think of anymore because her brain was being melted.
The Brazen Empire--or just “Braze”--was the desert territory on the far east side of Atlas. It was boxed in on all sides by tall, platformed plateau mesas called the Highland Cliffs, which kept the land in solitude from the rest of the continent.
Golden rolling dunes stretched out as far as the eye could see—which, to be fair, wasn’t very far because Katherine was sure she was seeing mirages everywhere. Cacti and shriveled shrubs stuck out of the ground, somehow surviving in the wasteland despite the cruel elements. The sky was an eye-bleedingly bright blue with not a single cloud in sight, letting the blisteringly hot sun rain down on the land.
And Katherine HATED IT.
“God, this is awful,” She panted, sweat burning in her eyes. Her dirty blonde hair felt like tassels of fire on her head, and her ears were like little torches attached to her skull.
Catalina laughed. “What are you talking about? This is amazing!”
Catalina had grown up in Braze, so she was used to the desert life. Katherine and Joan, however, were not as fortunate to have been raised in a scorching wasteland of dehydration and skin disease.
Katherine sluggishly wiped away a torrent of sweat from her brow. Jane had given them supplies for the journey to the different territories, but the glass bow strapped to her back felt like it was burning her alive. Joan was lucky enough to just get a simple ebony dagger, but she looked just as miserable. Her grey felt clothes and extra fur paddings for protection looked like they were roasting her like a chicken. Hints of blotchy sunburns were already starting to appear on her long, whip-thin white tail and ears.
Catalina gazed over a sand dune, looking for any signs of her home city. Behind her, Joan doubled over, heaving her breaths. Katherine could see several streams of sweat cascading through her white-blonde hair.
“We shouldn’t be far.” Catalina said, turning back to them. It was clear she was trying not to laugh at their discomfort. “Just a little longer!”
“Easy for you to say,” Joan wheezed. She lifted her tail to keep it from touching the sand.
  “Trust me! We’re almost there!”
They began their trek once again.
“So, what’s this area of sand called?” Katherine asked, falling into step beside Catalina. “Wasteland Number Six?”
Catalina laughed. “This is Droughtmaster Dunes,” She said.
Katherine blinked. “That’s actually very fitting.”
Her friend laughed again. “Isn’t it?” She looked up at the bright blue sky, smiling. “I’m actually happy to be back. Nothing beats the sun here.” She stretched her arms out to catch the rays and signed happily.
“And that’s a good thing!” Joan barked from behind them. Heavily hindered by the sun, she was falling behind slightly. “The sun here SUCKS!”
Catalina tittered. “The mythical bovine, the Brazen Bull, was said to have made Braze, which is why it has that name. The Bull made everything here. It dug out the land it claimed for the territory, it lifted Highland Cliffs with its horns to protect us from other territories, it scraped its hooves through the ground to create the canyons, it stamped its feet to created pools for oases, and, after it was all done, it shook out the dust in its fur and filled Braze with sand.”
Katherine smiled as she listened to Catalina talk. Her friend rarely ever spoke about her homeland, so it was nice to see her reminiscing over her childhood territory.
However, she went quiet for a moment and fiddled with the sunstone necklace around her neck, lightly touching her belly with her other hand. There was an unreadable expression on her face.
“Just a fair warning,” Catalina said, “that my family is kinda weird.”
Katherine chuckled lightly. “Alright. I’m sure they’ll be fine, though. After all, you turned out amazing.”
Catalina smiled again, nudging her. “Aww. You softy!”
Katherine smiled back. “I speak the truth!”
“I need water,” Joan wheezed from behind them.
“We’re almost there, sweetie,” Catalina said, giving the poor Tiefling a sympathetic, but amused look.
She was right. After clambering over a particularly high sand dune, the capital city of Braze was revealed.
Aragon was a city that was smartly built around several oases. Shiny golden walls that glittered in the sunlight boxed in the civilization, and the tips of sun-dried brick houses and a particularly tall tower could be seen peeking out from over the high edges. Hints of a huge skeleton was sitting behind the furthest wall in a sunken sand pit. The clamor of people could be heard as the three of them approached the front gates where two Aasimar guards stood, wearing long, protective garbs covering every inch of skin and holding spears. They bristled as the trio approached, but their jaws weirdly dropped open after a moment.
“Princess Catalina!” The grey-skinned guard exclaimed. “Y-you’re back!”
Katherine’s and Joan’s heads whipped around to Catalina, their eyes going wide.
  “Princess?!” They both yelped.
“Surprise!” Catalina said weakly. She gathered herself up regally and turned to the dumbfounded guards. “I request to see the King and Queen.”
Both guards nodded hastily. “Of course, princess!” The grey-skinned one said.
“Right this way!” Said the other.
The three of them were whisked inside the gates.
Aragon was filled with sun-dried brick houses and sturdy wooden huts. Merchant tents and carpet canopies were set up on the entrance pavilion, where shop owners hawked their wares to anyone who passed by. Fruits and fried meat, protective desert garbs and sunscreening oils, venomous scorpions to use for something and vials of antivenom--there were so many different items being sold. The smell of sizzling meat and roasting scarab beetles and brewing coffee swirled through the hot air, attacking Katherine’s nose with aromas that made her mouth water.
Small pools dotted the city, rippling softly in the heated breeze. Some of them were burbling like a fountain, while others were edged by lush greenery that seemed to be surviving much better than the plants outside the walls. Children were playing in a few of the pools, keeping cool in the midday heat, but some adults were collecting water in buckets.
A bronze statue of a giant bull sat in the center of the city, in front of the steps leading up to the palace. It was reared up on its hind legs with its fur bristled in powerful rage and horns thrown up in the air. Smoldering coals were set in its skull, and the furry tufts of its tail were crackling with orange fire.
The palace behind the statue was huge and majestic. It seemed to be made out of actual gold, glowing in the sunlight. Gemstones were inlaid across the outer walls, sparkling like colorful eyes. There were no front doors so the breeze could filter inside, so the guards led the three of them right inside.
Two thrones were sitting at the back of the wide, high-vaulted entrance room. They were made of solid gold, embedded with rubies and emeralds and cushioned by soft camel fur pillows. A curtain of water was pouring out behind the royal seats from the ceiling, collecting into a bubbling trough pool. The desert could be seen rippling behind the sheet of water.
And in the thrones sat the king and queen.
Queen Isabella was glowing like a polished garnet. The dress she wore was made of silk, in a rich dark orange shade that allowed her thick black hair to be shown to best advantage, and edged with ribbon and lace that perfectly set off her fire-like amber eyes and dark tanned skin. Golden veils wreathed her blood red wings, and yellow diamonds, topazes, sunstones, and tourmalines hung from her arms in glittering curtains of wealth. An elaborate headpiece made of gold and rubies sat on her head, with strands of gemstones dangling down into her face. Three golden medallions hung around her neck- one had a symbol of a broken rib cage etched on it, the second had what looked like small intestines forming the shape of a coiled snake, and the third had a faceless head.
King Ferdinand was less flashy than his wife, wearing simple cotton clothes with a camel fur cape around his neck and onyx wristbands on his wrists. His skin was slightly blotchy from sun damage and his hair was long and ash brown. Pale orange-salmon wings were folded neatly against his back, not nearly as big as the queen’s.
The two of them leapt to their feet from the throne when Catalina walked in.
“Catalina!!” They both cried, bustling over to their daughter. They threw their wings around Catalina, swaying her in glee, but Katherine noticed how Catalina just barely hugged them back.
“Oh, my dearest desert flower,” Ferdinand said. “You’re finally home after all these years!”
“It’s so good to see you again,” Isabella said. “You’ve been gone for so long!”
Catalina nodded reservedly. “Yes. It has been.”
The king and queen stepped back, taking in the sight of their daughter. Isabella’s joyous expression faded into a calculating one when she noticed Catalina’s pregnant belly, while Ferdinand just blinked at it.
  “You’re pregnant,” Isabella said.
“Yes, I am,” Catalina said, ruffling up the feathers in her hair. “I hope that isn’t any issue, Mother.”
Isabella considered the bump, like she thought the baby was going to jump out now and steal her throne. “Who’s the father?”
“His name is Arthur.” Catalina said.
  “Where is he?”
  “Not here.”
“You aren’t with your baby’s own father anymore?”
  “Oh my god.”
Catalina glanced back at Katherine and Joan for a moment, giving them a, “Here we go again” kind of look. She turned back to her parents with as much reserve as she could manage.
“What is he?” Ferdinand asked, glancing at Catalina’s belly every few seconds.
“A human.” Catalina answered. “I hope that isn’t an issue, Father.”
Ferdinand just cleared his throat and looked away. Katherine could tell that he didn’t have as much power as his wife, therefore making him weaker in disputes, even ones that don’t have to do with court matters.
“You shouldn’t just sleep with random strangers, Catalina.” Isabella scolded.
“I’m not!” Catalina barked, her face heating up. “Arthur is--was different! And why does it even matter to you? It’s not your body, it’s mine! And if I want to use it to sleep with people, then I should be allowed to!”
“Well, your body is holding my grandson. Or granddaughter.” There was something icy about the way Isabella said that word, and Katherine noticed how Catalina shuddered and set a hand over her belly protectively. “Plus, you’re still my daughter and I’m concerned over what you’re doing. You already ran off and disappeared for five years!”
Catalina rolled her eyes. “Don’t act like you weren’t happy.”
“I wasn’t.” Isabella growled, her blood red feathers standing on end like an angry cat’s fur.
“Sure you weren’t.” Catalina challenged her.
Ferdinand quickly put himself between his wife and his father. “That’s enough, that’s enough,” He said. “The point is that Catalina is home safe. That is what matters.”
“Hm. Of course.” Isabella said, settling her expression back into stolid noble maturity.
Catalina growled softly underneath her breath, and Katherine set a comforting hand on her shoulder. Isabella glanced at her, an eyebrow twitching up.
“Introduce us to your friend, Catalina.” The queen said.
Grinding her teeth a being ordered around, Catalina said, “This is Katherine. And this over here is J--”
  “TIEFLING!”
Katherine jumped at the cry. Isabella suddenly whipped out a hidden dagger from inside her right wing, her face contorting with rage and feathers ruffling up into two big red masses. Several guards around the room jumped to attention with their weapons raised, and even mellow Ferdinand growled softly and raised his wings to look more threatening. Meanwhile, Joan just blinked in frightened confusion, curling her tail in close.
“Catalina, you brought a TIEFLING into our home?!” Isabella shouted, and Katherine saw Joan wince and lower her ears.
“I didn’t recognize it at first,” Ferdinand said at her side, slightly more to himself than to the others in the room. “Why does it look like that? Aren’t they usually red or blue?”
“Her name is Joan.” Catalina said, stepping up beside Joan, exuding a protective aura. “And she’s with me. There’s no need to worry.”
“There is every reason to worry,” Isabella hissed. “You brought a Tiefling into our city! A TIEFLING!! Don’t you know what they are?” She didn’t wait for Catalina to answer her, “They’re DEMONS! Goat-faced, hell-touched, unbirthed DEMONS!”
“Mother, will you stop shouting?” Catalina said, agitation biting her words. A few people from outside were peeking in and ogling the scene with wide, curious eyes. “Joan isn’t bad. She’s my friend. And you’re not going to throw her out.”
Isabella narrowed her eyes at Joan, sizing her up several times. She sniffed. “We’re going to have to put her through decontamination.”
  “Mother--”
“You will not fight me on this, Catalina.” Isabella said firmly, turning her knife-like gaze on her daughter. “She will be back with you soon enough. But she is a Tiefling and this needs to happen for our safety.”
Catalina clenched her fists tightly, but said, “Fine.”
Isabella smiled like a venomous snake. “Very good.”
Catalina turned to Joan and cupped one of her cheeks. “You’re going to be okay, sweetheart. My family is just super paranoid over some races and feels the need to do a really stupid examination on them before they can have free reign in the city.” She brushed an unruly lock of white-blonde hair out of Joan’s face. “You’ll be out in no time, alright?”
Joan nodded quietly, and Catalina gave her a quick hug before a group of guards came to take Joan away. The young Tiefling glanced back at Katherine and Catalina, her tail slightly tucked between her legs and ears folded back, before disappearing down a hallway and out of sight. Isabella shook her head with a look of visible distaste.
“I don’t know why you would ever befriend one of those beasts,” The queen said, earning a growl from Catalina. Katherine put her hand back on Catalina’s shoulder, hoping to provide some comfort to her. “Anyway, I’ll alert the chefs. Your arrival back home needs a celebration!”
And celebrate they did.
That night, when the desert dropped to a startling cold temperature for a blisteringly hot wasteland, the Brazens of Aragon rejoiced in the return of their missing princess. Firelight emblazed then night sky, the Bull’s horns were lit with golden flames, and a band played Catalina’s favorite instruments. Cactus juice, strange alcoholic concoctions, and camel milk were passed out in tinted yellow glasses, and roasted desert fruits, grilled meat, and spicy hot foods were served on bronze trays you could see your reflection on. Aasimars danced and twirled in the main pavilion, celebrating gleefully, all while Catalina stood at the top of the steps leading to the palace, receiving guests and graciously accepting their best wishes. Everyone had a smile for her. Some of the adults looked at her appraisingly--only to be expected, Katherine supposed, as she was royalty--and many of the youngsters tried to flirt. Catalina humored them lightly solely for the entertainment of their reactions.
Katherine got lost in the festivities rather quickly. One moment she was getting her tongue melted by a painfully spicy dish, and then next she had a glass of translucent greenish juice thrust into her hands. She tasted it as she tottered up to Catalina and made a face at how bitter it was. Catalina laughed lightly.
“That’s Snake Wine,” The princess told her, “It’s made out of cactus juice that we put a dead snake in and leave out to ferment in the sun for a week.”
Katherine silently spit the mouthful of Snake Wine back into her cup. Catalina burst out into laughter so loud it rivaled the blaring music and made several people’s heads turn in curiosity.
“That is, umm,” Katherine said, covering her mouth. “Ah--”
“Horrible?” Catalina smiled and passed her a napkin. Katherine took it gratefully.
“Your words, not mine,” Katherine said, wiping her mouth. “But yes.”
Catalina giggled. “It’s better than that weird berry crap you used to have me drink.”
Katherine gasped with a wounded expression. “Berry Milk is amazing, thank you very much!”
“Berry juice and milk do not go together! You have to choose one, Kat! ONE! You can’t have both!”
They both laughed, earning even more confused stares.
“Are you happy to be back?” Katherine asked after a moment of serene silence between her and her friend.
Catalina shrugged, losing her smile. “I guess. I mean, I like seeing the city again and all my old friends, but…” She cast a frustrated expression at her parents, who were chatting animatedly with two old nobles. “Like I said before, my family is weird.”
Katherine frowned. “I’m sorry.” Hoping to get Catalina’s mind off of her family issues, she looked over at a tall orange tower in the far right corner of the city. It was made of dried clay, with several twists, points, and spires, and Katherine noticed the deep red of a Kobold snout peeking out of one of the large barred windows. “What’s that?”
Catalina looked at the tower. “Oh that’s Hotshot Hall. It’s our prison.” She said. “Mother doesn’t like having the prisoners near the palace, so they’re kept as far away as possible.” She wrinkled her nose.
“Ah,” Katherine nodded, watching the Kobold pull back inside the tower.
“Well, maybe you’ll get to see a Calf Scramble while we’re here,” Catalina mused. “So that’s something to look forward to.”
“Calf Scramble?” Katherine looked at her confusedly.
“Oh, it’s great,” Catalina said. “Five people are taken out to the sinkhole in the back of the city and have to try and catch these camel calves we release with them. It is HILARIOUS to watch them run around and slip in the sand!”
Katherine smiled. “I look forward to it!”
“Princess Catalina! Princess Catalina!” An eager young voice called.
“A princess’ work is never done,” Catalina said to Katherine, smiling. She bumped her shoulder affectionately. “Have some fun, Kat. I’ll talk to you again later.”
Once Catalina whisked off to go speak with more people, Katherine delved back into the party for a little while longer before straying away to explore.
Aragon was truly a lavish city, even for a civilization in the middle of a desert wasteland. She passed by several cozy-looking houses and lively bars decorated with desert flowers, all abandoned for the celebration.
She soon found herself in a small clearing between buildings where an oasis pool sat. Two bendy palm trees swayed lightly in the breeze, and clustered of paddle-shaped succulents hounded the edges of the pool. Katherine sat down on a smooth stone and looked up at the sky, where every single star in the entire universe seemed to be visible.
  “Beautiful, isn’t it?”
Katherine jerked around, nearly falling off of the rock and into the pool.
Queen Isabella was standing in an alleyway feeding into the clearing, darkness shrouded over her. She stepped out into the moonlight, and all her gemstones glittered like eyes around her.
  “Yes,” Katherine nodded, composing herself.
“Why aren’t you celebrating?” Isabella asked, standing above Katherine.
“I’m just taking a breather, Your Majesty,” Katherine answered. “Is that alright?”
Isabella eyed Katherine suspiciously. “Of course,” She said slowly. She looked up at the sky. “When did you meet my daughter? You seem to be good friends.”
“Five years ago,” Katherine said. “She lived in a city next to my forest village and wandered in one day. After an interrogation, I was showing her out and we just started talking. She kept coming back after that and became a regular visitor in the village.”
“Hm.” Isabella said. “Well, I thank you for bringing my daughter back home safe.” She looked down at Katherine and smiled, sending chills down Katherine’s spine. “I am so, very pleased.”
————
The celebration was still going on when Katherine eventually turned in for the night. She went to her lavish guest bedroom in the palace to sleep, but not before visiting Catalina.
Catalina was in her own huge bedroom, sitting under the marigold velvet blankets in her equally giant bed. She was looking down at a painting in her hands, and didn’t look up from it when Katherine walked inside.
“I ran away because I wasn’t happy in Aragon.”
Katherine walked over and sat down next to Catalina. The painting she was holding had four girls in it, all smiling and engulfing each other in their wings.
“I was restricted from doing so many things and Mother watched my every move.” Catalina went on, her voice brimming with hate. “I couldn’t stand it.” She brushed her hands over the surface of the painting, an expression of longing in her eyes. “You probably think I’m just being selfish and snobby, but you don’t know how things happen here.”
“Then tell me,” Katherine urged softly. She set a hand on Catalina’s thigh, letting her know she was there for me.
Catalina sighed. “The queen rules in Braze. And that’s great, you know, girl power, yay!” She laughed dryly. “But the way we take the throne…” She trailed off, shifting uncomfortably. “Only daughters, nieces, granddaughters, and aunts are allowed to challenge for the throne. And they do this by fighting the queen. To the death.”
Katherine frowned, quickly understanding why Catalina didn’t like the system.
“Mother’s three sisters died young, so she didn’t have any competition growing up.” Catalina went on. “She challenged my grandmother when she was twenty-two and killed her swiftly. Crushed her ribs during the fight. Then, she married Father and started having children. She said she would only humor four female heirs. No more than that.”
She pointed to the tallest girl. Her wings were dark indigo and powerful-looking, and she had glowing golden skin. Dark brown hair was cut short around her head, bordering her fiery green eyes. She was wearing the sunstone necklace that Catalina now had around her neck.
“That’s Juana, my second oldest sister. She had the wildest temper and always thought of fun stuff for us and my other sisters to do. She also LOVED to challenge the teachers she had.” A smile pulled on Catalina’s lips, then quickly disappeared. “She challenged Mother when I was ten. I swear, she nearly beat mother to death; Juana did not mess around when it came to combat. And she would have won, too. She should have won. But then Mother, bleeding, bruised, and pinned on the ground beneath her, looked up and said, ‘I’m proud of you.’ Mother doesn’t say that often. Rarely ever. Juana hesitated, smiled, and then Mother slashed her stomach open with a dagger hidden in the bends of her wings. I still remember Juana’s face. That look of realization. She had looked down at her organs now hanging out of her stomach and grabbed at them like she was going to try and put them back in, then looked at me and my sisters with the most agonized face I’ve ever seen on her before.” She dipped her head and swallowed thickly, blinking back tears. “I think--I think she thought she failed us.”
After a moment of silence, Catalina swiftly wiped her eyes, sniffled, and then pointed to the next girl. Her wings were narrow but shiny and the color of raw salmon and hibiscus flowers. Her tree bark brown eyes were calculating and calm, but her smile was bright and beaming.
“That’s Maria. My oldest sister. She was like the voice of reason for the group, but she always got dragged into mischief anyway. She was also really good at getting us out of trouble. Except that time Juana mooned our history tutor.” She laughed, tracing her fingers over Maria’s long brown hair. “After Juana died, she became a lot more protective over me and my sister. I never thought she was going to challenge Mother, but she did when I was sixteen. Because Mother gave birth to another female child. A healthy baby girl. But, three days after she was born, she just--disappeared. One night, she was there, and then the next morning she wasn’t. Nobody ever said anything about her again, but Maria was furious because she knew Mother had killed our baby sister.” She swallowed thickly. “Maria was never a fighter. She was good at non-lethal combat, not--not what the challenge for the throne was. After she was beaten senselessly, cut up and bleeding all over the sand, she begged Mother for her life, saying she forfeit the challenge and wouldn’t try to overthrow her again. And Mother decapitated her.”
With the sadness of losing her sisters came anger, and Katherine saw Catalina grip the sides of the painting tightly and grit her teeth in rage.
Catalina pointed to the last girl. Her wings were fluffy and a goldfish orange color. She was small and had large, innocent dark amber eyes and sun-kissed brown hair she kept up in a messy bun.
“That’s Isabella Jr. Pretentious of Mother to name her that, huh? We just call her Izzy.” Catalina said. “Izzy’s the youngest out of the four of us. She was always worried in a cute way and was super smart. After Maria died, she became a lot more clingy towards me. I let her sleep in my bed at night because she was too scared to sleep alone. Not that I blamed her. Mother always looked at us like she was just daring us to challenge her. It scared the poor thing.” She shook her head. “But then I ran away. I left Izzy alone. I didn’t tell her where I was going or what I was doing, I didn’t even leave her a note or ask her to come along. I just--left.”
She gently touched her pregnant belly. “I hope they aren’t a girl. I can’t stand the thought of Mother doing something to them to get rid of competition.”
She shook her head and looked up at Katherine, her eyes shining in the candlelight. “This may be my home, but this is not my family. You and Joan are.”
