Knitting a freehand bag and started wondering how often people even use patterns, anyway. So--how often do you use a pattern when you make things ? This include knitting/crochet/sewing/weaving/nalbinding/bobbin lace/tatting/etc but also things like woodworking, cooking, and baking. If you want to just pick the thing you do most often that's fine.
I personally do not use patterns as I find them far more confusing than just figuring out the construction of an item and simply making it. I do very occasionally browse ravelry for inspiration but have downloaded maybe 2. In the 5 or so years since I joined. And have followed exactly 1, which I modified every single aspect of. In my defense, dyslexia.
#poll#knitting#crochet#weaving#tatting#sewing#quilting#nalbinding#bobbin lace#cooking#baking#theres just SO MANY patterns out there and i kind of dont understand why... who is using them ???#they are so hard to follow even when written well#i get that thats dyslexia talking and not true for most people but it still baffles me#i also dont follow cooking/baking recipes but in a different way#the issue for crafting patterns is that i cant read and so i cant figure out what the hell im supposed to do#but recipes are usually lists and dont have tons of abbreviations and dozens of steps#so i can kind of read recipes but i just like doing my own thing and also have been burned by recipes before#so even if i try following the recipe as hard as possible i will inevitably change some things#like what about the whimsy. also i will use a butter wash after taking this out of the oven i dont care that it says eggs#and while i dont do legos anymore i was the same with that too. we got a kit once and my sister loved following each step#oh my god. the worst. i would covertly make other things with the remaining pieces while she assembled the thing#i do think that were i not dyslexic i would still not follow patterns#like i said i just prefer to do my own thing most of the time

Something kind of funny I never anticipated about crocheting with longer hair was pulling out a piece of my own hair out of my project that I somehow crocheted into it
#art#fiber art#crochet#most likely that strand fell out mid-stitch and i just... crocheted it in#love in every stitch? no. HAIR in every stitch#also i'm watching a video about knitting (war-time knitting specifically) and it's sparking memories#i forgot the sheer effort that was getting women to knit for soldiers (understandably because i wasn't alive during those wars but still)#molly was my favourite american girl book and i think that's where i first learned about that as a kid????#but those books weren't mine they were just family books and i LOVED reading fiction back then#and i really liked the historical aspect to those books in the sense that they were about girls in specific historical periods#and they incorporated actual history in it - to the full extent i'm not sure because i haven't read them in close to ten years (idk)#and it's interesting to see just how many people - not even just women! - knit for soldiers#i'm learning now from this video the sheer number of other people who started in knitting#anyway this is why i'm begging men to also do fiber arts (watching a reel of a guy crochet a blanket and HELL YEAH BROTHER)

i was gonna say 🐰 but after some thought id say you're 🐱
kindly older sister vibes but also you wouldn't hesitate to stab somebody with a knitting needle if prompted, u know?
accurate because the number of times a week I threaten to stab someone with a spork is unfortunately high. have I ever done that? no....
#I did bite my brother once but it was accidental#another reason why I need to take up knitting!#crochet hooks are not good for stabbing#(I LOVE that you have assigned me “big sister vibes” honestly so so proud would you like some soup?)#asks

why are gifts so fucking difficult oh my godd. starting to look for anniversary gifts for my partner cause weve got about two months to go, and i swear to god anytime theres a holiday where we have to give gifts i panic.
its so difficult cause in theory i know what she likes but i dont feel like we spend enough time around each other to know what style of things she likes yknow? ill send her stuff occasionally that i like and i feel like she has a really good grasp on the things i enjoy cause i have such a distinct style. for her though like i know for a fact that she doesnt dress in the way she wants to, but if she was given the chance i dont know what she would choose to wear. like what she wears now is different than what she would wear if she had the choice to redo and choose her own wardrobe (her words). so like. i always freak out when buying jewelry and stuff like that cause i dont know if its a thing that she would like or not based on how weird that situation is right now.
#for valentines she got me a little gold necklace with two small pendants that have our initials stamped on them :((( its so fucking cute l#and i wanna do something like that for her!! but not the same thing yknow?#one of my ideas was a little gold locket with us inside or maybe the eye portrait situation cause that would be cool#but do i think thats cool for me or do i think its cool for her? i have no idea#my other idea was getting a replacement ring of the rings we got a few years ago#they were small bands thay had the other persons birth flower on them (got those before we even started dating lmaoooo)#and hers doesnt fit anymore#or another idea was that i found this little crochet pattern for a small crochet cat with a knitted sweater#and i was thinkin i could make crochet cat versions of her and i with little sweaters to match!! so that would be really cute i think#or like. if i started now i could crochet a blanket cause she really loves cozy things but like#our anniversary is in june and also shes really picky with textures so i might not do that even though i wanna#do you see my problem here#its a clusterfuck honestly#thats why im starting the search so early#my last idea was to make her a custom crosstitch pattern of her favorite ancient art (its a goat tattoo)#to put it simply she really loves history and i think she would enjoy that#anyway. i am freaking the fuck out ❤️

On the one hand, I get it: because so many people Do Not Read and Will Not Research, so saying, 'hey look, here's a place to go look up the basic things about what you're calling about, because if you took 3 seconds to Google this you'd have your answer.' make sense.
But often it is near impossible (or actually impossible) to get a human on the phone. And if/when you do finally get a human on the phone, they're some underpaid Customer Service Rep, probably outsourced, who has no idea how to fix your problem, because your problem is complex or more nuanced, (that's usually why you're calling!) and it's not in their crappy training manual - if they're lucky enough to even have that! (I blame this entirely on the companies - they don't train their staff well enough or give them enough leeway to do their jobs). A company that actually staffs its phone lines well will have all my love. When I can call with a complex question and get a knowledgeable answer within 5 min? You have me as a customer now.
one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method
#not knitting#not crochet#musings on the state of all things corporate#and this is why I love smaller businesses#because you can often call and someone who knows the exact answer to your question

i haaaateeee getting gifts so much all it ever does is reveal how little the people who "love" me know me or even just listen to what i tell them
#every year my mom MAKES me make a christmas list and then proceeds to buy nothing off of it#this year and last she even got something i specifically said i didnt like#we were discussing learning knit v crochet and i said i didnt like the look of crochet... guess what i got! learn to crochet kit :)#my friend got me a valentines gift which was so sweet and thoughful but then it turned out to be a strawberry donut#shes known me for over 5 years and i have repeated that i dont like fruits much and only ever get chocolate or other flavours when were out#and its so frustrating because i could easily choose a dessert shed like because i remember. she loves matcha and i literally#remember the exact bakery that she likes#like WHY!!!! I CARE SO MUCH ABOUT YOU GUYS BUT YOU DONT CARE ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THESE BASIC THINGS ABOUT ME

I wish I wasn't tired as shit bcuz I have thoughts about the sweater curse that I want to write into a nice little piece, but I don't have the brainpower to do it :(
#the sweater curse. if you dont know. is the thought that if you knit or crochet a sweater (or anything) for your partner you'll break up#also heard it called the knitting/knitter's curse. crochet curse. or boyfriend curse#the short form of my thoughts is this:#its not an actual curse its just a good test#first. do you think this person is even worth the time and skill and money and effort of a hand knit item? if not. why?#second. is the recipient going to appreciate the time skill money and effort spent on them?#if it's something like a sweater that requires fittings and such. are they going to be helpful and excited?#or are they going to be noncommittal and unenthusiastic#if you are a knitter and you dont think your psrtner is worth the effort of a hand knit item. think about why#and if you make something for someone and they dont appreciate the love and care put into it. they're not worth it#those are my basic thoughts i wish i could think better though

*whisper screams* you're writing is amazing I always look forward to your posts thank you for feeding the lads brain rot!!! Could I please request (last minute lol) the lads reacting to mc who is pretty yarn crafty but refuses to make them a sweater because of the dreaded "boyfriend sweater curse" (when knitting/crocheting, or other yarn craft, making a sweater for your boyfriend after finishing it and giving it to him he soon breaks up with you X__x)
Sweater Weather
Your man wants you to knit him a sweater, but you'd rather cut the grass with scissors before you do that because of the dreaded 'Boyfriend Sweater Curse'. Anni's Note to Anon: *whisper screams* sorry I took so long with this request I hope you forgive me here's a token of my appreciation 🌹
Zayne
Finds you hand weaving a fluffy blanket
Zayne: Will I ever have something hand knit by you?
MC: What do you want?
Zayne: How about a sweater to keep me warm in my office?
Mc: Absolutely not
Zayne: Why?
Mc: That’s a one way ticket to a messy breakup I think not
Zayne: Why would we break up?
MC: It’s the dreaded sweater curse
Zayne: The sweater? Curse?
MC: Yes ... I knit you a sweater and you leave me ... I’m not doing it
Zayne: And you believe in this so called curse wholeheartedly?
MC: If you can believe in unicorns Dr Zayne I can believe in a curse
Zayne kisses your forehead and squishes your cheeks
Zayne: alright I’ll take your word for it
Rafayel
Rafayel: When does your dashing boyfriend get a sweater?
MC: You sick of me or something?
Rafayel: Whoooaaaa how did we get here?
MC: If I knit you a sweater you’ll leave me its the sweater curse
Rafayel: I promise I won’t
MC: No
Rafayel: Please
MC: No
Rafayel: If you don’t love me just say that
MC: If you want to break up with me just say that
Rafayel: Baby please im begging
MC: Well stop!
Rafayel: PLEASE
MC: NO
Rafayel: BABYYYY
MC: SHUT UP
Rafayel played Beyonce ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’ at full volume for the rest of the day. He still didn’t get that sweater though.
Xavier
Xavier: You’re very good at knitting
MC: Thank you baby
Xavier: Did you make this?
MC: Yea it’s a cropped sweater took me a while
Xavier: Could you make me a sweater?
MC: Hell no
Xavier: Why so much aggression?
MC: If I knit you a sweater we’ll have a nasty breakup
Xavier: ???
MC: Just trust me its the sweater curse
Xavier: Okay I trust you
MC: Thank you
Xavier: What about a pair of socks?
MC: …..I’ll think about it
Sylus
Sylus: Did you knit this?
MC: Yes isn’t it cute? It’s a cropped sweater but it has that loose off the shoulder fit
Sylus: You knit sweaters?
MC: Sometimes ... they take a while
Sylus: Make me one
MC: Can I get a please?
Sylus: Please sweetie
MC: No
Sylus: I said please
MC: and I said no if I knit you a sweater you’ll break up with me
Sylus: We’re married
MC: You’ll divorce me its the dreaded sweater curse
Sylus: ......And you believe in this so called curse?
MC: Yes
Sylus: You’re adorable
MC: It’s real!
Sylus: If you say so Princess
MC: *narrows eyes* you think im crazy don't you
Sylus: At least you're self aware
MC: *throws the knitting needle at him*

It doesn't necessarily matter, but it will give you a different look! Most crochet patterns, photos, and videos show the bottom style (anticlockwise) of yarn over, and if the top style (clockwise) is shown at all, it's usually mentioned as a yarn under.
These two style of yarn over are different—wrapping clockwise uses slightly less yarn and does twist the stitch, resulting in a tighter and less stretchy stitch overall. It's definitely not as big a deal as in knitting, though! I've also seen wrapping clockwise specifically referred to as a "cross stitch" stitch pattern, as the twisted stitch is reminiscent of cross stitch, haha.
You can view it in the same vein as Eastern vs Western stitch mounts in knitting, if you like. Neither is correct or incorrect, but large swathes of patterns and tutorials assume a specific way of doing things.
The answer is probably 'you're overthinking this' but I have to ask - does the way you do yarn overs when you crochet matter?

I've been doing it like in the first picture because that's the way I'm used to flicking my yarn when I knit, but in every tutorial I've seen so far the person does it like in the second picture
But as far as I can tell stitches arent twisted, so is it just a matter of preference?
#hope this helps!#wrapping clockwise isn't wrong and plenty of people Do crochet this way#and as for the 'cross stitch' stitch pattern—there are seriously a million and one 'stitch pattern' names#if you haven't heard those knitting terms before: eastern stitch mount has the leading leg on the right#with needle inserted in the so called 'back loop' and yarn wrapped clockwise#k2tog leans left and ssk leans right#western stitch mount has the leading leg on the left with yarn wrapped anticlockwise#k2tog leans right and ssk leans left#most knitting patterns (and everything else) is written with western style in mind!#combination knitting wraps anticlockwise for knits and clockwise for purls which is why it's called combination—it combines both methods#wrapping anticlockwise is to knitting as wrapping clockwise is to crochet#a fun crochet fact: this is why in some chinese and japanese crochet patterns the notation uses X for US sc/UK dc#because wrapping anticlockwise makes the stitches look like Xs!#i love. talking about fiber and textiles.#textiles tag
