(Be)Neath: Character Stats Roll-up
Beta testing is officially underway! 🚀
...after a week of tiny adjustments here and there, tonight it's finally time to meet up with the test team for the stats roll-up. 🎲
Always a mix of curiosity and a touch of "aha, what have we got here?"😄
Human 🎩
Tomb-Colonist ⚰️
Clay Man 🗿
Rat 🐀
Cavy 🐹
Rubbery 🦑
Devil 😈
Which one would YOU pick?🕯️
Oh, and YES, I DO love IRRIGO! Could you tell? 😅
Hopefully the boys will also appreciate the new tablecloth! 💜
I'm admittedly a tad nervous, but that's part of the challenge and fun, right?!
Truly, I can't wait to see those Investigators shape up!!!
P.S. - As a friendly reminder, if you and your friends are interested in trying out the game, you can always find the free 50-page booklet for "(Be)Neath" online at the Homebrewery (works best with Chrome) or as a PDF on Google Docs.

okay this is enough to make me soak all my crusty pens clean and take up lettering again
i was literally just thinking what inks would be good for all the colours of the neathbow and this just appeared on my dash
"P drowns in PELIGIN, the colour of the deepest zee. V marks VIOLANT when blood is shed in a spired place. A wakes APOCYAN, the blue of memory and brightest coral. Behind your mirror, V names VIRIC, the colour of shallow sleep. C lights COSMOGONE, the colour of remembered suns. I is for IRRIGO. No one remembers why. G is lost in GANT, which remains when all other colours are eaten." -- Pages from 'The Neathbow', Sunless Sea
Here they are! All seven fountain pen inks I've picked for the Neathbow.
Peligin: Diamine Tempest (dark, dark, dark blue with lots of gold shimmer and a slight red sheen)
Violant: Diamine Polar Glow (electric blue with an intense red sheen)
Apocyan: Diamine Spearmint Diva (teal with silver shimmer and a slight pink sheen)
Viric: Diamine Neon Lime (lime green with lots of silver shimmer)
Cosmogone: Diamine Citrus Ice (bright orange with lots of silver shimmer)
Irrigo: Diamine Pansy (violet with gold-black sheen)
Gant: Dominant Industry Downpour (warm gray, no sheen, no shimmer)
Of all these inks, Downpour is my favorite. It might look like a nothing ink next to all the sheeners and shimmerers, but it has lovely shading and is easy on the eyes. I use it every day for doodling.
Keep in mind that as per Failbetter's own words, the Neathbow is actually quite variable in how it appears, given that its colors are a) unreal, and b) colors. This selection is just my personal interpretation (with a few grabbed from Bruno's unofficial list), and it is not any more "correct" than others. Feel free to assemble your own tasting flight of Neathbow inks if you have the means.
All drawings were done with a Duke 209 (fude nib). Good god, I never want to change out so much ink ever again.

lore question for FL tumblr: what does apocyan do, exactly. i know on a basic level it can sort of "store" memories and imprint them into other things but like. what's its whole deal with the weird alternate future stuff. what distinguishes its messing with memory stuff from violant and irrigo 's messing with memory stuff
#as far as i understand it so far. if irrigo is forgetting and violant is remembering. apocyan is sorta like the memory itself?#and cosmogone is the nostalgic replica you make and see in ur minds eye. etc etc. funny neathbow stuff#i might be missing something or just generally being Completely Wildly Incorrect though#yin-thoughts#fallen london#why am i asking to begin with? dddddddon't worry about that part. it's just a surprise tool that will help us later

When they first came to the Neath, overwhelmed with grief from the death of their lover, Mina found the Cave of the Nadir. Forgetting offered them solace. The less they remembered, the less it hurt. (Or at least, they could pretend it hurt less.)
Only after they'd forgotten too much - so much they couldn't find their way home to their new beloved - did they finally stop. They went there less and less. But their experience with irrigo got them a job at the university, and a job at the shrine as a midnighter.
Still, the fear of using irrigo as a coping mechanism stuck with them. Anytime they feel bad, it's so easy and so tempting to just... let go of those memories. Rather than keeping themself from irrigo, though, they kept themself from negative emotion. There's no need to forget if they don't dwell on anything that would make them feel that grief again.
And yet.. This time, fresh with grief of losing the clay highwayman, they don't want to forget. They want to remember.
They request a transfer. They set aside their irrigo robes and put on their travelling coat. They have plans. Big plans.

gotta confess that although i decided to give reisz the amnesia trope beam just bc i wanted to start playing before having to settle on their background, i did have a barebones semi-canon backstory for them all along.
its just that. out of all the canon-compliant manners of messing with memories that i came across so far (mostly mentions of irrigo & bottled oblivion). the One idea that i like the most just had to be the most convoluted possible
it wormed its way on the back of my head from the very first week or so when i was thinking about making a seeking alt and came across random unmarked nemesis ending spoilers in the discord.
the idea is reisz as the returned loved one of a nemesis alt, yeah.
naturally, the whole thing didn't work out that well for the two of them in the end..........
(…whenever i make a new Main oc it's like a curse. it doesn't spawn on its own, no. it comes in twos and they always come with an unsatisfying enmeshed relationship from a shared past. so those nemesis spoilers made me point like the dicaprio meme and BOOM second doomed character materialised in my head instantly. and cuz im a simple cliche bastard, a sucker for foils and mimesis whose autism craves narrative patterns, these two would have had inversely parallel developments.)
nemesis is just about the perfect ambition for a seeking alt bc it seems like the natural next step for a ultimately compassionate person that decided to commit their life to a vengeance that did Not pay off (due to the whole. not remembering thing.) so if i do decide to canonize this idea the matter of her current whereabouts is already answered: NORTH. and now that reisz got their first (and last) weeping scar. well. they match <3
i'd be playing events from years past but going north means she doesn't get to do the railway or any of that other stuff, so it fits nicely in the phantom's timeline.
this also would give me two very good explanations for their memory issues:
somehow rebooted themself on purpose bc they simply Couldn't Deal (same reason the… avenger? scourge? went north. they got to watch the beginning of her self-destruction, of course.)
it's an occasionally reoccurring consequence of whatever the hell got done to bring them back to life (i do not know what it was . i know there's cider involved but idrk what cider is.)
the only reason im wary of canonizing this right away is that aside from vague ending spoilers i Do Not Know what happens in nemesis. i Do Not Know if this idea is viable for a pc or if the circumstances of being brought back this way would contradict what a pc can or cannot do.
am in a weird spot that i Need to know more spoilers to check if everything would fit in a way that makes sense, and bc i want to play the ambition someday i don't want to spoil myself by trying to look it up!!1 flops down on the floor.
alas. i promised myself i'd only make an alt once im way into the endgame with reisz, so this boutta be their Schrodinger's Past for a good while. and if i do get to the end of nemesis a year from now and find out it doesn't actually fit, well . that's a problem for future me
#unfortunately im too enamored with the idea of my ghostie's habits and demeanour being unconsciously all rooted in the person nem's alt was#mirroring someone that doesn't exist anymore out of a deep unacknowledged longing impossible to sate#smth smth erase yourself & become who you loved the most instead. how we're all made of pieces of people from our past. etc#if the idea doesn't work out i guess i can simply make that alt someone their brain Made Up to explain how they ended up in the Neath#...there's also a chance i get another idea once i unlock the cave of nadir & get to learn about irrigo first-hand. who knows. i sure dont!#fallen london#fallen london oc#chaindoodles#chainrambles#the twilight phantom

"a yoke weighted with self-accusation" / "false solace in confession"
did something a little different with the fansquiggles today. I've been kind of dissatisfied with the ones I've been drawing lately - they felt to me like they were lacking some of the tangly elaborateness that some of my older ones had. at the same time, I've been feeling wary of making them elaborate just for elaborateness's sake
so for this set, I actually designed the bottom one first ("false solace") and then decided to keep going to see if I could come up with something that felt closer to the elaboration of the older sigils without feeling overdone. then I ended up liking both for different reasons. then I realized that there would be something interesting about doing the elaborate one in violant (aka the purple that makes you remember) and the less elaborate one in irrigo (aka the purple that makes you forget).
here's to all the Midnighters (and other Gamers(tm)) out there. I made this with Claude, Lark's Midnighter, in my thoughts, but everyone is welcome to it
(top: hongdian 6013 fude nib (sigil) + hongdian n23 “year of the rabbit” long blade nib (label) / diamine polar glow / tomoe river paper) (bottom: duke 209 calligraphy pen fude nib / diamine pansy / tomoe river paper)
#fallen london#correspondence sigils#invented sigil#the more I use pansy the more confident I am that I picked correctly for irrigo#it just needs to pool a bit to really show off its flavor of ostentatious#which is so unlike polar glow despite being another sheening ink

got me thinkin on dawnburnt stuff now lmao
with Alex's arc of being dawnburn ive always personally gone with the use of irrigo mixed with apocyan (relevant with is being Josephine and Fires being the ones trying to Deal With That), to physically remove the memory of the dawnlight from Alex's head.
the consequences of that of course is he quite literarly doesn't remember anything involving it afterwords, and its always a question of whether that is really enough to work
#i love thinkin about usin neathbow colours#irrigo for forgetting. apocyan because fires uses that to capture memories. makes sense#oc talk

Ok so here's what's happening: Hiram is theoretically capable, in time, to readjust to having a soul again. His red science expertise makes it much easier for him to cope with the violant flashbacks and correspondence-induced migraines. But he doesn't want to do that. It's been too many years for him to even consider unpacking everything that happened over the decades, and he doesn't know where to put all the pent up rage and hatred and pain he hasn't felt since 1870. What is he supposed to do?? Process them??? He has things to do and people to see and a reckoning to postpone, he can't waste time caring about all that!
I got rid of his soul again, but I'm thinking about three options for his narrative arc and I don't know which is the funniest worst:
He goes home on the verge of a breakdown, he retrieves his spirifier's fork and abstracts himself immediately, going back to the Hallowmass celebrations like nothing happened. If you noticed him panicking outside the butterfly pavilion no you didn't. (sick and twisted but kinda funny option)
He shows up at the Deviless' house with the most pathetic look on his face like "can you PLEASE get rid of this thing again???" He has a breakdown at her place and when he says he loves her it sounds so sincere but so different and so wrong. (whump option)
He goes straight to Moloch Street to board the first train to Hell. He dumps his soul directly in the smelting. All the devils are flabbergasted and a bit worried about his mental state. (silly option)
Bonus horror points if he fast travels via mirrors:
Every mirror in his home bleeds until he performs the abstraction, he smashes them afterwards.
Every mirror at the Deviless' house starts to bleed until Hiram shows up in her parlour, with blood stained hands and a deranged look on his face.
The RHQ intercepts him in Parabola and he gets lost in the Edict of Towers for a bit. He has a mental breakdown at the gates of hell. (this is not the silly option anymore)
#also. he's still in the red court outfit so his eyes are completely and fully visible#there's no irrigo monocle to shield people from the violant#everyone who meets him is getting violant blasted#this is so bad for everyone involved#hiram hargrave
