GALTx eNews: Charlie Has A Message For You
Our sweet boy, Charlie, has a message for you: regularly testing your dogs for heartworm and providing them with veterinary approved heartworm preventatives is imperative.
Charlie is a young Irish Wolfhound /Dogo Argentino mix who joined the GALT family with heartworm. Now that he is in a foster home, he is in the thick of heartworm treatment. While the prognosis is good, treatment is neither fun for him nor cheap for us.
Heartworm treatment requires medications that are injected. The injections hurt and the medication can cause severe lower back pain that sometimes makes it hard for the dog to even get up and walk. Additionally, after each treatment, dogs have to be kept as calm as possible for 8 weeks to prevent potentially deadly complications such as a deceased worm causing an embolism. Any increase in heart rate is risky. Dogs receiving heartworm treatment should not run, play, or even jump on a couch. Charlie will have to spend months in confinement. That's hard for most dogs, but especially young dogs like Charlie.
A couple of months after the initial treatment injection, Charlie will be retested. If the test is positive, Charlie will receive another injection and suffer another period of limited activity. Some cases can be cured with just a couple of treatments. Other cases require additional treatments after some months of recovery time. We don't know how many treatments Charlie's case will require.
Charlie's first treatment cost $185. We anticipated his subsequent treatments will cost $325 each. Typically, achieving a negative result on a heartworm test costs between $750 and $1,200. We agree with Charlie that prevention is the best medicine and hope you'll talk with your vet today about heartworm preventatives for your dogs if they are not already receiving them. One bite from an infected mosquito is all that it takes.
You can help Charlie recover with a gift to our Nitsche Veterinary Care Fund. He will be adoptable as soon as he is well. Thank you!

Dear Tumblr, I have been desperately wanting to share this news with you since May last year and now I finally can: Gollancz is publishing not one, not two, but THREE of my queer medieval retellings over the next few years! You'll have seen me posting little bits about these books in the past, but I'm so excited to get to share them with you properly.
First up in 2025: The Wolf and His King, a queer retelling of Bisclavret that uses werewolfism as a metaphor to explore chronic pain and illness. It's also very much about gay yearning, fealty, and the mortifying ordeal of being known. Partially in second person and partially in verse, you can see my previous posts about it under the tag the wolf and his king or, for the really early ones, werewolves and gay yearning.
In 2026, I'm bringing you The Animals We Became [working title], which is a queertrans retelling of the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, looking at gender, compulsory heterosexuality, and trauma, via nonconsensual shapeshifting. Lotta trans vibes, lotta trauma; I wrote a first draft of this last year because I got carried away writing the sample chapters for my proposal and I'm excited to get deeper into it in edits. Aka t4t shapeshifting and trauma; generally tagged as also owls are transmasculine now.
And finally, in 2027, which is the one I've honestly been most excited to tell you guys about, it's To Run With The Hound [working title]. If you've been following me for a while, you'll know that I wrote a book with this title way back in 2018… well, the one I've sold isn't exactly that book, it's a proposal for how I intend to completely rewrite that book from the ground up, but yes, this is it: my Cú Chulainn novel, my queer medieval Irish book, my (hopefully) magnum opus. Haven't written it yet, but the plan is to use a nonlinear narrative to explore why Táin Bó Cúailnge is a tragedy, featuring a great many feelings about Fer Diad, Láeg, and Cú Chulainn himself.
There's a bit more detail and some FAQs on my website right now, but the most important thing is QUEER MEDIEVAL BOOKS WRITTEN BY SOMEBODY WITH MULTIPLE DEGREES IN MEDIEVAL LITERATURE. If that sounds like your jam, stick around.

Slight spoilers: meta and speculation about the names of Jinx and Vi's birth family members
(I wrote this up in a comment on my secondary reddit account a little while ago, so I didn't steal it)
Tumblr media
:read more:
The name of Jinx and Vi's mother is Felicia. Felicia's name stems from a Latin word that means "lucky." (Sooo the exact opposite of Jinx, in terms of literal meaning).
Tumblr media
Connol- the briefly mentioned birth father- is an Irish Gaelic name that means "strong as a wolf," deriving from parts that mean "wolf," "hound," and "valour."
Tumblr media
Very interesting, given Vander's association with hounds and wolves *cough cough*
Meanwhile, Vander stems from the Greek *evander,* which means "good man." Warwick is an Old English/Anglo-Saxon name that means "farm; buildings by the weir." Weir is an old term for a dam or a barrier built across a river to raise water upstream, regulate its flow, or catch fish. An appropriate name for the man who was once responsible for the unsteady peace between Piltover and Zaun way back in Act 1 of Season One.
Silco is the only name that doesn't have a true meaning that pops up on Google; broken down to its roots, it might take from words that mean "of the forest," as a derivative of the Latin "Silvio." It could be different spelling of the African name "Silko," which means "silk," and mightve been the name of an ancient Nubian king. It could even be a mix of the words "silk," (as in, the fibre produced by larvae to form cocoons, or "Silk Road," as the garment and trading currency) and "Co," as in "company" (since he produced Shimmer like a capitalist and brought great wealth for the chembarons).
Now onto the sisters!
Tumblr media
As a proper Latin root word, Vi means "with force; violently." It can also be interpreted as the Roman Numeral 6. The name "Violet" originates from the Latin word viola (which happens to share its name with an overlooked instrument in the string family), but is Old English in proper form, and means "purple flower; steadfast."
Tumblr media
The word Jinx is derived comes from the Greek/Latin word "iunx," their name for the wryneck bird- a bird associated with sorcery, and "jyng," an Old English word that means "a spell." It's meant bad luck since the mid to late 19th century.
Me, internally: "Wow, the writers at Riot and Fortiche really cooked with this one! How insightful!"
Me, externally" *sobs*

what dog i think 40k boys would be
based entirely on non-scientific vibes and discussion with @lemon-russ. this started off kind of silly but very quickly became an excuse for me to get slightly deep with the characterisation. slight cw for referenced animal abuse i suppose?
the emperor - border collie
now, for those of you unfamiliar with dogs you may think that picking a medium-sized herding dog is a strange choice for the Master of Mankind. However, if you have ever met a border collie — specifically, a working border collie — you will know exactly where I am going with this. These dogs are ferociously intelligent, completely single-minded, and wedded to their purpose. They will not be distracted from their work by foolish things like ‘fun’ — they will herd those sheep, damn it, and they will herd them where they are meant to be. The Emperor, like a border collie, is distant with his affection, and does not allow room for negotiation: the sheep will go in the pasture, and there they shall stay. But, I hear you protest, the border collie obeys the shepherd, and the Emperor obeys no one but himself! to this I say that the Emperor is his own shepherd; his Plan for humanity is the metaphorical co-pilot here, and it is this plan that guides his fleet, furry feet.
2. malcador — poodle. specifically a miniature white one.
Look, it sounds ridiculous, but poodles are incredibly clever dogs and you’d be a fool to underestimate one — just as you would be a fool to imagine that the frail old man at the Emperor’s side is anything other than a world-destroying threat.
3. the lion — irish wolfhound
Getting into the Primarchs now. It has been said that the Lion has major cat energy — which is completely true. However, I would argue that he ultimately is a hunting hound; a knight at his father’s side, bidden to go where he must. Like a wolfhound, he is tireless, powerful — but also frail in his youth, frailer than you might think (wolfhound pups are notoriously prone to injury because of their longer legs and how clumsy they can be). It is only with age that he reaches his full potential. Also, like most hunting dogs, he likes his sleep.
4. leman russ - a wolf
Well, obviously. However, it’s a really key point that he is a wolf not a dog, because all too often those two things are seen as synonymous when they really aren’t. Wolves and dogs are separated by ten thousand years of evolution, and they rarely get on. Russ loves his family — his fellow wolves — but struggles to relate to his canid brothers, who all seem just a little distant from him. He is drawn to humans (the pull of domestication is strong, even for the wild beast he is), and clashes regularly with the Lion (hounds and wolves can work together, but never rest easy at the same fire).
5. Magnus - borzoi
I’ve said before that Magnus is definitely a borzoi, because they are such eldritch looking creatures — like they know all of the secrets of the universe and they are not planning to tell you. Borzoi are not always viewed as the most intelligent of dogs, but that’s misleading — they’re actually very cunning in their own way, just not necessarily the easiest to train (just like a certain headstrong red fool we know). Independent-minded, a little aloof, friendly to their family — Magnus is a sight hound through and through. And, of course, should he be given a reason to hunt down wolves, he will do so with the baying of his ancestors singing in his ears, and the scent of burning Prospero lodged in his nose.
6. Perturabo - Staffordshire terrier
Squat, grumpy-looking, and sometimes vicious — it’s easy to see the worst of Perturabo in the worst of the staffie. Bred to be pest-killers and dog-fighters, there’s a persistent, harmful idea that these dogs need ‘a firm hand’ when they’re being raised. However, ill-treatment only serves to make these dogs neurotic, nervy and prone to biting — raised correctly, they are soppy and sweet and just want to snuggle on the sofa with the people they love. Unfortunately, Peturabo was reared unappreciated and maltreated, and now it is everyone’s problem.
7. Angron - Old English Mastiff
Mastiffs may have a fearsome appearance, but they are actually some of the sweetest dogs around; happy, dopey drool-machines that only want to spend time glued to their family. But Angron was snatched from his mother’s teat too young, beaten and scourged and forced to bite, and the result is a warped, twisted image of what a mastiff should be: barely-champed down fury, and the sort of hatred that is born when love turns inside out and sour. Every shelter has had to make a horrible choice with certain dogs — seeing that they are too deeply damaged to ever recover, they have done the kindest thing and ended the creature’s suffering, hoping that the next world will be gentler than this one. But no one ever did that for Angron. He is locked outside his master’s house, because at least his anguished howls keep away intruders.
8. Vulkan - Great Pyrenees
Despite their fearsome appearance, livestock guardian breeds like the Great Pyrenees are actually gentle with their flock, living amongst the sheep (like the Salamanders with their human families) — grooming the lambs, cuddling up with the ewes, patrolling with the rams. They are utterly devoted to their task, willing to die for those they sleep alongside, but they love them, and are loved dearly in return. Vulkan is many times larger than his human companions, but they clamber all over him — young and old alike — and he holds them close, vowing to keep them safe from harm, even at the cost of his own life.
9. Sanguinius - Bedlington terrier
You might have to google this one, since it is a little obscure. And now that you have googled it, I probably have some work to do in order to convince you that this floofy terrier is the perfect representation of the Blood Angel Primarch. So, first of all — these terriers are strikingly beautiful. Eye-catchingly adorable — in a strange sort of way , a fey kind of cuteness that has you looking twice. They are sweet little family pets — however, the instant they catch scent of a rat their ancestry rears its head, and they turn into floofy little killers, breaking spines and crushing skulls with merry abandon. And if you need any more convincing think of this — doesn’t the terrier look like a lamb? A cutesy little lamb? A sacrificial lamb?

Greetings! Just wanted pop in with a quick question that’s been kinda bothering me for a while, hah. (It’s fine if your too busy to reply or have already replied to a similar ask, feel free to ignore if you have 👍🏼)
Ban and their brother, what species are they?
Ban to me looks mostly like a Maned wolf type yōkai, especially with they’re long, skinnier limbs and fur that resembles a sort of mane?
(Your character designs and personalities have me in a chokehold, I just love a good character design 🙏🏼)
Good luck in your move btw, I know how stressful they are. 💀 As always, make sure to drink water and sleep!
They're both an Irish wolf-hound mutt! Finn's dog is their mutation source :)

Speaking of getting bent over a table by Jason...
"Mine."
Teeth sank into the delicate skin of your breast. Sharp teeth. Not hard enough to break the skin but hard enough to make you squeal and squirm under him.
"Say it," he taunted. "Say you're mine and I'll-"
Shit
Jason sat up, still sweating and still panting. His face burning.
He'd not had dreams like that since he was 14. He'd thought he was over it. But, apparently not. He got up and tried not to think about the shame cooling on his thigh as he lumbered into the bathroom.
And he tried not to think about you.
He shouldn't think about you like that. It wasn't fair. Even if the beast in his chest decided otherwise. He started the tap and threw his boxers into the hamper with a groan.
The memory of your scent tickled his nose and he rubbed it against the washcloth before he ran it under the warm water. Hoping the scent of detergent and the chemicals would drown it out but it didn't.
Your eyes were barely open. You still needed help to eat. And the last full moon had nearly destroyed any progress you had made. The change and it's violence leaving you in a heap on the floor, unable to answer the call of the hunt. To revel in the freedom of running wild.
Weak and weary, your howl answering his had been feeble and mournful.
He's never seen you in your full glory. Fierce and feral. The way he'd gotten to feel the last two moons. Even in the city. Scaring the scum out of their skin and leaving them cowering. It was satisfying. Men like Jeff. Like the captors who'd caged you. You'd like that.
He cleaned himself up and threw the cloth back into the sink. Snatching a clean pair of boxers off the laundry basket and pulling them on before flopping back down on his bed.
He should not be thinking of you that way. He should not. Not now. Not ever. Whatever they'd tried to tell him about your duty to produce more of your kind. You weren't chattel. Or breeding stock. You were a woman. A kindergarten teacher who missed Rocky Road ice cream and kayaking. You wanted an Irish Wolf Hound and to learn to rock climb.
They'd taken your life away. From you. From all of you. And he needed you to better. He needed to go back to your life.

Hello! I'm requesting 🏛️ 🐈 🎒 for caius and athenadora if you have the time please and thank you.
🏛️ - Best memory with the Volturi?
𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐮: ... About 100 years ago we held a gathering in the Guard's recreational room, it was one of the few times we all truly mingled. I sat up with Felix and Santiago far into the morning hours, for a moment I forgot myself. It has been a long time since I was anything but a king and soldier. A surprising moment of peace...
𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚: I would say my best memory is the day Caius brought back Corin with him from Gaul. For years he had attempted to turn someone, and suddenly we had a daughter together...and she was perfect.
🐈 - Have you ever had a pet?
𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐮𝐬: As a part of my... healing, Aro and Athenodora gifted me an Irish Wolf Hound to keep me company. In the beginning I hated her, but slowly she enabled me to discern what was real or not... one of the few bright lights in my life at the time. Her name was Elpis.
𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚: Once upon a time I had a cat Caius gifted to me on my birthday, it was an adorable little thing that would curl up on my lap every day of her life. Her name was Chesna, and brought with her the peace her name heralds.
🎒 - What items do you always carry?
𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐮𝐬: I am a rather spartan man, I only have a cellphone on me at all times. Not one of those modern contraptions however.
𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚: Much like my husband I also carry with me a cellphone, though I have upgraded to a smartphone model. Then there is certain pieces of jewelry I have worn since my human days, over the years I have taken it to jeweler's to update it, ensuring I can keep it with me till the end of my days.
