Weakness in Servanthood and Swelling Egos
QUESTION: Weakness in worship is emphasized as one of the most important factors that causes arrogance and the ego to gain strength. What kind of a relationship exists between weakness in worship and gaining strength in arrogance and the ego
ANSWER: Ubudiyyah (deep worship) comes from the Arabic root a-ba-da and refers to individuals’ observing their responsibilities toward God Almighty and being in a consciousness of servanthood. It’s similar to ibadah (worship), which comes from the same root, but there are some differences in meanings between these two words. Ibadah is the name and title for the act of putting theoretical knowledge on faith into practice within a certain discipline and system. Ubudiyyah means leading one’s life with a consciousness of servanthood. In other words, ibadah is observing the responsibilities of servanthood as commanded, whereas ubudiyyah means deepening in servanthood and leading one’s life with a consideration of perfect goodness, always with a constant consciousness of being seen by the Omnipresent One.
A servant who observes acts of worship by deeply feeling them in his or her conscious, who deepens in servanthood by exercising in this way, and who is fixed on the consideration of ubudiyyah will be freed from other kinds of servanthood. The sole way of ridding oneself of being a servant to others is being a servant to God, the true sense of the word anyway. Those who do not become a servant to Him become a servant and slave to different power-holders, totems, and idols.
Indeed, God is the only One deserving of being worshipped. To put it in Sufi terms, He is “The Absolute One to be worshipped and the True Desired One.” That is, our worshipping Him and acting with a consciousness of worshipping Him in every moment of our life is His right over us, and it is a duty and responsibility on our part. In other words, He is the Desired One, the Beloved One, and the Worshipped One, for He is God. Therefore, things such as totems, myths, and idols worshipped as a consequence of different deviations, in spite of their not having any such right and eligibility whatsoever, are evident marks of unbelief and misguidance. There is only One who deserves worship and that is God Almighty. Individuals fixed on such a consideration of worship, who do not think of bowing before anybody but God, never see themselves as superior to and different from other people; they do not assume a special status for themselves other than being a servant. They are always in recognition of being like a slave in shackles vis-à-vis God Almighty. As such persons eliminate their ego and arrogance in the melting pot of servanthood, they always attribute all good things they are blessed with and all achievements they have attained to God only. Maybe, with the deceiving of their carnal self, they may occasionally experience some dizziness or blurring of vision before accomplishments far beyond their capability… however, with the feeling of ubudiyyah, which always exists as an ingrained character in their soul, they curb such feelings that might arise within.
Inverse proportion
There is an inverse proportion between deepening in worship on the one hand and gaining strength in arrogance and the ego on the other. That is, as much as a person deepens in servanthood to God, that person can manage in the same degree to maintain self-possession against the carnal soul, arrogance, and egotism and take under his or her control the negative feelings within. As for one who keeps away from worshiping God, that person becomes egotistic and even egocentric in accordance with the degree of his or her remoteness from worship. As such people are distanced from the duty of servanthood, which is reminder for people of their true identity, they forget in time who they actually are and ascribe to themselves all achievements they have made. They even wish good works done by others to be somehow related to themselves—therefore, achievements, applause, and appreciations continuously draw them like a whirlpool into themselves.
However, individuals who take a mannerly stance before God, who pass every frame of their life with such consciousness, never forget their true identity. They always act with the consciousness that they are powerless, weak, and mortal beings in shackles before God. This feeling of impotence and poverty urges them to constantly ask for more of worship. No matter how much they worship, even if they offer a thousand units of prayer every day, they keep saying, “My God, I failed to worship You as I should! O the One who is known more evidently and clearly than everything! I failed to know You as I should. If I had, I would already have melted away. O my God the rightful owner of thanksgiving! I failed to express my gratitude to You as I should.”
Such servants know that the acts of worship that they carry out are nothing in compared to the favors that they are blessed with, including the blessing of their acts of worship.
Unlimited blessings call for unlimited gratitude
A person’s not remaining as a lifeless being but blessed with life, not being a plant or animal but having the honor of being a conscious being, and further than that knowing and recognizing God, obtaining the opportunity to open the doors of eternity with the mysterious key of faith, and taking the path to becoming eligible for Paradise are such great blessings that they have no equivalents in this world. The Bestower of these infinite blessings is God Almighty.
If a person becomes aware of all of these blessings, becomes fully oriented to God, deepens in servanthood, becomes a hero of “is there more?” and constantly tries to increase one’s knowledge of God, love, zeal, and enthusiasm, God will then save that person from the whirlpool of arrogance and egotism through His favors and graces.
Indeed, God Almighty is expressing Himself to us with some thousand happenings every moment. And in response, if we try to monitor phenomena with a systematic and disciplined deliberation, with caution and vigilance, and try to make sense of the whole by juxtaposing separate frames, and make an endeavor for always walking to Him by searching different ways, He will not let us down halfway, because He has never let down those who walked to Him that far.
The elixir of ubudiyyah in the era of arrogance
Days and nights keep chasing one another throughout history. Since the earth insisted to ignore the heavens, and the heavens commanded the eyes to become tearless, the ground has become a desert throughout. Sometimes, however, showers of mercy pour from the sky, and the earth serves as ground for stalks that yield seven, and even seven hundred, fold more. Sometimes light gains over darkness, which thoroughly shrinks. The atmosphere of spirit beings and angels is victorious to that of devils…in other words, the spiritual establishes dominion over the material. The time of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, is the prime example of those bright periods. In that era, there was virtually no suitable ground and atmosphere for devils to move around and live comfortably. There were similar bright periods in later times.
Today as well there are many who feel and sense that they are a servant to God with all the particles of their body, who live with the constant consciousness of togetherness with God thanks to the Divinely bestowed inner sensations far beyond their perceptions. If it were not so, this earth would not remain in its orbit. God Almighty looks to the earth through the eyes of those who offer sincere servanthood to Him. He forgives guilty, sinful, and unsteady servants like us for the sake of those pure and faithful servants. He gives some more term to the universe, and He does not destroy it for their sake.
Although our time is an age of arrogance, God willing, a beautiful era has started with respect to worship and ubudiyyah. As is well known, the ultimate point of darkness marks the beginning of light. The horizon darkens before the coming of dawn. But this is the final darkening, and the characteristics of the night will make a surge for one last time. One more time, darkness will cover the entire horizon with a final vengeance, but then you will see the twilight of a false dawn following. Although this initial phase is not the dawn, it is the most truthful herald of the real dawn. It has never proved to be wrong: whenever an initial false dawn emerges, it is followed by a real dawn after a short time.
In short, even if in this age of arrogance, as much as a person deepens in worship and devotions, egotism will forsake that person in the same degree, and the zone of egotism will gradually narrow down. Just as the sphere of darkness narrows down with the expansion of the sphere of light, there exists a similar contrast between ubudiyyah and arrogance. One develops to the disadvantage of the other. As much as a person deepens in worship, his or her egotism diminishes to the same degree. In time, such persons ascribe everything to Divine power, assessing the worth of the achievements they have made only by considering whether God’s good pleasure and approval are there. As a result, they completely melt away in terms of their arrogance and egotism; they do not even recognize themselves, always speaking about Him and proclaiming His name everywhere they go.

This has been an amazing day. Absolutely amazing. (as long as I don’t think about Dennis and Little Moon too much). . Today was completely uneventful and absolutely extraordinary all at the same time. I slept 9 hours. All the way through. Woke up at sunrise and had - get this - a TWO HOUR YOGA PRACTICE. Say whaaaat?! I haven’t been on the mat without interruption or a time limit in forever. I did all my @naprapatjonas and @lara.heimann homework AND my home practice AND self massage AND meditated. Normally I choose one of all of those things and squeeze it in between meetings with an eye on the baby monitor. Today, it was just me. All by me lonesome. So yummy. Then, the slowest breakfast. And I mean the slooooowest. I like to eat breakfast the way Lea Luna feeds her lunch to the dogs; little bits at a time and then all at once. I’ll have a cup of tea when I wake up, then a juice, then a break, and then a piece of toast and suddenly, a feast. Yoghurt granola pancakes tofu scramble oatmeal, I want it all. (I may be the reason Brunch was ever invented). Breakfast should last all day! After my super meal I unpacked all my luggage. Wrote a to-do list for later to clear my head. Lounged by the pool. Swam. Read a book (for fun! Not for learning!). (A Marian Keyes one). A sharing. A nap. I’ve done nothing but it’s been everything. I just walked the dogs and stopped for a handstand break at our secret spot. Now, heading to yoga practice at the studio and then dinner in the studio garden. And before bed... I MAY DRAW A BATH. Holy shit man. I can’t believe I had literal anxiety about being on my own when it’s full on heaven! (again, can’t think of baby. But still)! Who knew I would turn out to be a pretty epic person to hang out with?? Hm. I might just have to do this more often...🤷🏼‍♀️🤗❤️ PS @dennisfromsalad I love you so forking much❤️ #ProjectAloneTime #aloneness #rest #restore #yoga #yogaeverydamnday #handstand #ocean #beach #joy #sky #inversion #strength #trust #universe #GRATITUDE (at Aruba)

A Chrome Interlude: Flawless One Ch 1
Chapter 1: First Place
Tsk, why the hell does he have everything good?
Tumblr media
Kamui: Thinking ‘bout something complicated again, Captain~?
Chrome: ......
Kamui has always interrupted Chrome’s train of thoughts. From the day Chrome had taken over Strike Hawk for the first time up until today, it had always been like this. Strike Hawk was an outstanding unit just as the rumours suggested—each member had their own unique strengths which allowed them to excel at taking independent action.
Chrome: ...Kamui. I believe I told you to finish preparations within 30 minutes and return to the mission point.
Kamui: You say that it’s maintenance, but it’s just dismantling and reassembling weapons. Is there some kinda importance in doing that~?
Chrome: To be well-acquainted with the structure of any given object and be able to use it to the fullest—that is how a Smith handles things.
Kamui: Smith... So it’s that again, huh. Our captain is “Captain Chrome” and not “Captain Smith,” y’know.
Chrome’s hand, busy with operating the monitor, stopped as he looked at Kamui.
Chrome: ...It’s because I will become one.
Kamui: I see… Okay, I’ll help you out so you can be one, then!
Chrome: Help out?
Kamui: Yep, ‘cause we’re friends y’know!
Chrome used his authority as Captain to make Kamui return to his post, and reopened the mission plan he had received from Mr. Smith in order to verify its contents.
—Use Strike Hawk to lure out the enemies during this operation. Once you’ve arrived at the expected location point, you will retreat alone.—
Chrome: ......
Chrome slowly closed his eyes.

Sky Garden–FOS Military Academy, 0730 hour.
Classroom System: Langston Smith.
Question 1: Briefly explain the military viewpoint on the current state of the link technology used in the “Structure + Commander” combat system.
The Gestalt Classroom Participation System is currently activated.
Classroom System: Selected participant–Langston Smith.
Please stand and explain your answer.
Langston: Yes.
According to the Science Council’s latest research, there are two main applications of link technology in the military.
The first method is the utilization of the Connection System to establish an in-depth link to the Structure’s Sea of Consciousness. This method is more commonly used as it enables the issuing of operation commands without needing to take real-time distance into account.
The second method would be to conduct a joint operation with Structures currently on-site. A short-distance link can be employed using a human commander’s Mind Beacon and a Structure’s Inverse Element Device. Currently, this method is seldom used as there are several limitations to its capabilities.
Classroom System: Currently calculating score. Please answer the next question.
Question 2: Explain the key points of the operating principles of Commander-Military Structure link technology.
Langston: It is possible for a human’s cognitive awareness to be uploaded persistently at a high efficiency rate and for absolutely objective decisions to be carried out at the same time, due to investment towards the public application of the Gestalt System.
However, given the highly complex nature of conducting research into the human brain, the Science Council have therefore classified it as a particularly confidential research.
According to initial research documents that can be accessed with current authorizations, the amount of neurons in the human cerebrum is approximately 100 billion. This means that it’s possible to create over 100 trillion connections.
Although the neuron—in other words, the nerve cell—transmits information issued by the neurotransmitter to the dendrite[1], these are from action potentials that currently...
Whisper: So… he’s Langston Smith, huh...
Looks like he’s gonna be this academic year’s top student.
When the system mentioned Smith… could it be… that he’s related to the same Smith in parliament?
Being the son of a member of parliament, top student of the academic year, and a handsome prodigy to boot. He sure has it all...
Langston: ...At the same time, having a commander link their consciousness to the Structure via Consciousness Link technology effectively stabilizes and reduces the deviation waves found in their Sea of Consciousness.
Classroom System: Currently calculating score. Please answer the next question.
Question 3: Let’s say that you are in a situation where you are providing mission commands to Structures deployed on Earth, but information in the database on the mission area was inefficient. Elaborate on what the preparations prior to the mission should have been.
Langston: Gather as much data as possible and analyze the information in the existing data. Since the density of the Punishing is closely related to nearby geographical factors, the first thing to do is project the terrain using a Gauss–Krüger projection...
Whisper: That’s a top student for you. I heard they’re gonna pick only 3 of the best students for the preliminary Commander Qualification Exams at the end of the month… Guess we know who gets one of the seats there now.
Classroom System: Currently calculating score. Please wait a moment.
Langston Smith, you have scored 4.721 points out of the maximum 5 points.
Whisper: Dang, wouldn’t that be the highest score anyone’s ever gotten?
That’s practically almost a perfect score, you know!
Langston: ...Not even close enough.
(——)
Tumblr media
There wasn’t a single person in the academy who had not heard of mentions of Langston’s prodigal feats. In secret, he balled his fist underneath his desk, and the sound of something being broken echoed...
Student A: School’s finally over! Wanna come hang out with us, Langston?
Student B: Hey dude, why are you inviting him?
Student A: What’s wrong with that? Aren’t we all classmates?
...I guess geniuses like you are different from people like us, huh. Sorry ‘bout that Langston, looks like we’ve interrupted your precious study time.
Langston: ......

Tumblr media
As if it was also following the flow of time, the Sky Garden’s interior was gradually dyed with the color of an artificial night.
Langston: Sky Garden–FOS Military Academy, 0030 hour.
The strength of the human brain to remember things is approximately 100 trillion synapses.
Based on its current condition as well as past experiences, modifying the connection strength between neurons is possible.
With repeated training, the access method of the neural circuit will not only be optimized, but its speed and precision will also significantly be enhanced.
"Everything is about repetition—if I can devote myself in repeatedly doing it, then so be it.” According to the system’s public results monitor, the student who had their name always displayed as the number one in the rankings was Langston Smith.
“As if heroes would even fight—!”
“Astonishing valor! Unblemished reputation—!”
Langston: I have to be perfect...
Langston repeatedly read all of the main points of his subjects while standing straight. The ones tackled yesterday, today, and even the ones for tomorrow—all of the information that he needed without omitting a single letter, as if he was engraving everything inside his brain.
Langston: ......
He closed his eyes and pierced his own skin with a sharp object he had been hiding in his pocket. At that moment, a sharp pain ran all throughout his whole body and awakened his consciousness.
Langston: Gh...
”The sharp pain from the wound felt like an adrenaline rush. However, the pain tolerance will only increase if I get used to this.”
Langston: ...I should use a stronger type of pain, huh.
Maybe I should make a portable tool...
...I really am a genius.
Somewhere, unconsciously, a scornful laugh echoed in the silence.
This sentence was translated faithfully, though it doesn’t make a lot of sense scientifically. While it may sound confusing as dendrites are the part of the neuron responsible for receiving information from other cells, one possible meaning is that information is being sent from the dendrites towards the rest of the neuron after it has been received. That, or the scientific accuracy in the original Japanese is way off (and the writers got their cell anatomy wrong) Many thanks to my lovely proofer for taking the time in enlightening me in regards to this part.

The Subtle Art of ‘Hacking’ UFOs
In July of 1853, four immense and mysterious black ships steamed into Tokyo Bay, belching smoke from their tall stacks. The Japanese navy, whose sailing ships made of wood and bearing tall sailed masts, surrounded the mysterious vessels. Sailors stood in awe on their boats' decks, wondering how these four bizarre ironclad ships moved without the support of the wind or sails.
This small fleet was commanded by the American Commodore Matthew C. Perry on his way to Edo, the capital of Japan, on a mission to force the island nation into trade negotiations. As the cultural communications professor Kazuo Nishiyama described, when the Japanese came face to face with an advanced system of propulsion—in this case, the steam engine—they chose to engage in a complete societal shift, leading to an intense scientific and technological revolution.
Two centuries later, several news outlets reported that naval aviators flying America's finest aircraft off the coast of California in November of 2004 intercepted a bizarre and mysterious object. The pilots, who managed to capture it on video, later recounted its ability to move through the air without wings or a visible propulsion source. According to their testimony, this UAP, or unidentified aerial phenomena, performed strange maneuvers and accelerated at a rate of speed impossible to reach with today's leading propulsion technology. There have been reports of several other similar incidents. Much like the sailors in Tokyo Bay, these aviators came face to face with the unknown, and they undoubtedly realized that the best tools designed to keep the people on the shore safe stood no chance against whatever this new technology was.
The recent UFO incidents involving the US Navy and unidentified aerial incursions into American airspace have left the public wondering what is going on. If we put the speculation concerning Hollywood aliens and government conspiracies to one side, we are left with an irrefutable issue: Something is up there and enjoying free reign over sovereign airspace. For a handful of security experts, scientists, and entrepreneurs, that something is worth investigating. And some see the contemporary quest to investigate UAP as a source for novel ideas and technological innovation.
"We are not a company that runs away from hard problems, we run to them," said Ben Lamm, the CEO of Hypergiant Industries, a Texas-based technology and AI company. "I believe in diving into things that scare people. If we do not address our fears, they will eat us alive."
Lamm is a serial entrepreneur and former video game developer who has sold his previous companies to significant players like Accenture and Zynga. Holding various defense and industrial contracts with the US Air Force, Booz Allen Hamilton, NASA, Shell, the Department of Homeland Security, and other major private and government agencies, he finds the idea of UFOs intriguing.
"I am concerned with answering big questions about the universe, and unknown aerial phenomena are currently a big question," Lamm said in an interview with Motherboard. "Right now, we know there are UAP. We have multiple videos that have been validated by both our military and leading and established news outlets. There is no reason not to leverage AI and data. We have to try to solve these questions."
Lamm views the question around UAP as a sort of "moonshot." Getting to the moon was the goal, but the technology developed to make that journey possible was revolutionary. Lamm is unsure if UFOs are real, but he believes that using technology to figure it out will lead to novel and even game-changing technologies.
In February, Motherboard reported that Lamm was developing CONTACT, or the Contextually Organized Non-Terrestrial Active Capture Tool. According to Lamm, the platform will be made up of satellites utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence to passively monitor the skies. Using advanced radar technology, known as wave induction radar and inverse synthetic aperture radar, the system will filter out known objects such as commercial jetliners and be able to collect data and image, in three dimensions, any unknown objects in the sky.
For Lamm, part of the solution to the mystery is using data to identify and track these unknown objects. The benefit of using technology that sounds vaguely like something out of an Iron Man movie, Lamm believes, is that as the data begin to come in, a better picture can be painted of what these objects are.
This is not the first time a project using intelligence gathering to investigate anomalous aerial objects has been launched. In 2008, the Defense Intelligence Agency initiated the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP, to investigate UFO incidents. The program's overall goal was to investigate UFO sightings and establish new theories concerning how these objects worked. In June of this year, Motherboard reported that Senator Marco Rubio introduced a bill demanding the Department of Defence and the office of the Director of National Intelligence generate a report to divulge what exactly the various military and intelligence branches are doing regarding UAP incursions. The bill disclosed that the government—chiefly the Office of Naval Intelligence—was actively engaged in continuing AATIP's mission.
"Congress appropriated funds for UAP research but did not mandate that the Department of Defence or intelligence departments or agencies support the AATIP program," Chris Mellon, the former United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, told Motherboard in an interview. "Perhaps AATIP's sponsors on the Hill naively thought the DoD bureaucracy would operate in good faith and do its best to support the AATIP investigation, but that didn't happen. So AATIP was isolated rather than integrated and seemed to have made limited headway."
Currently, Mellon is an advisor for Tom DeLonge's To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science and regularly appears on History Channel's Unidentified: Inside America's UFO Investigation. Before that, he spent a decade working on Capitol Hill in various security and intelligence roles.
"I was shocked to learn that naval aviators and carrier battle groups were detecting scores of UAPs off the East Coast. What thoroughly outraged me, however, was the fact that this information was being suppressed, and these units were getting no support. From an intelligence perspective, I found that totally unacceptable," Mellon said. American airspace was seemingly being violated repeatedly by unknown and advanced aircraft. According to Mellon, senior US military and civilian officials were not being issued warnings concerning these incursions. Mellon considers it an "intelligence failure."
"Regardless of their origin or intent, the intelligence community is failing the nation if unidentified aircraft can reconnoiter DoD operations for months and years on end without any notification of senior officials in a position to respond," Mellon said. "To date, there seems to be little if any contribution to DoD technology resulting from the study of UAPs because DoD is only beginning to awaken and take the issue seriously."
The former head of the Pentagon's AATIP program, Luis Elizondo, agrees with Mellon's overall assessment, but explained that after leaving the Pentagon's UAP program in 2017, things have changed.
"Unfortunately, I cannot speak officially as to the current nature of the UAP Task Force, but I have every indication to believe that it is up and running, and is executing the mission consistent with the fundamental principles of AATIP," Elizondo told Motherboard in an interview. Elizondo explained that the current task force has better resources and "is far more robust" than AATIP was while he served with the Pentagon. However, seeing that the overall mission is to not only investigate but to "understand" how these objects work, more funding would be beneficial.
"Let's look at it this way. Say we want to know how a new Russian aircraft works. We can collect information on it. We can talk to people who've flown it. We can talk to the company that makes it. But the best way to understand it is to try and get your hands on one, and exploit it so you can make your own version of it," Elizondo said.
Alongside these official endeavors, the UFO community continues unabated to engage in research. While the government is still interested in the subject, the grassroots UFO community has always tried to find its own solutions. And as technology continues to develop, astute operators attempt new ways to collect data on UAP.
"If you look at UFO videos or pictures, they are usually poor quality, blurry, or just pictures that appear to be light backscatter," said Steve McDaniel, a Maryland-based software engineer. He has worked for defense contractors and other Big Data companies like Intel. "Our goal is to enable the collection of high fidelity data from all over the world to create a data set that is worthy of scientific research."
McDaniel and his colleagues are developing Sky Hub. This open-source observational platform collects video and sensor data of unknown aerial phenomena and aggregates it from trackers worldwide into a central public database.
"Essentially, this comes down to developing a platform and an approach to performing Observational Science on the phenomenon. We're providing the tools to do just that," McDaniel told Motherboard in an interview.
According to the Sky Hub website, the hardware for the Sky Hub is community-driven, and anyone can build their system from parts bought off Amazon. According to McDaniel, a decent SkyHub rig consists of an NVIDIA Jetson Nano microcomputer, various sensors such as a GPS receiver and a Witmotion module, and an HD camera. Such a system can cost anywhere between $300 and $1000. The software is free and open-source on GitLab.
"Developing an observation science platform is time-consuming and has taken me a significant amount of work. I've invested thousands of hours architecting, developing, and implementing the entire system," McDaniel said. Initially, he was the only engineer on the project, but has since been joined by software developer Corey Gaspard.
"Engineers join open source projects because they believe in the goals of the project. All personal beliefs are put aside with Sky Hub. The project is making no assumptions. If engineers want to know the answer about what UAPs are, then we welcome them to find the answer with us," McDaniel said, noting that finding engineers was difficult. The UAP subject still has a significant stigma attached to it; McDaniel said that the best way to reduce that stigma is to provide repeatable and verifiable data.
"Most UAP events in the past have only had eyewitness testimony, which is unreliable. Sky Hub systems will provide hard data on events that cannot be disputed," McDaniel said
Hunting UFOs aside, McDaniel sees a significant scientific value to the project.
"As the Sky Hub network grows, it may be possible to use our dataset to track bird migration patterns, make use of detailed weather and atmospheric data, and understanding on a large scale how different events (observed by video with associated sensor data) affect the local environment. And all of this data collection will be tagged with GPS time and location," he said.
"Technology has long been influenced by what we would call 'science fiction,'" said Dr. Matthew Hersch, who teaches the history of science at Harvard. He noted that even as early as the 13th century, the best minds imagined automobiles and elevators; human ideas have always circled the imagining of impossible things.
"People can imagine much more than they can ever build, and UFO mythologies embrace a variety of propositions that are flat-out impossible or technically foolish," Hersch told Motherboard. "Given these and other limitations, I don't have a great deal of confidence in the ability to harvest astounding new technologies from UFO rumors. There is very little these rumors provide that is new, and aerospace engineers have been trying to make sense of them for 70 years without success."
Like Lamm and McDaniel, Mellon argues that aerial anomalies are "potential gold for both science and intelligence." Unfortunately, they are attached to a deep-rooted stigma that dissuades legitimate scientific pursuit and hinders professional reputations.
"This is a terrible mismatch for what is supposed to be a curious, inquisitive, open-minded, and scientific intelligence community," Mellon said. "Those providing new information and insights should be rewarded rather than penalized." McDaniel concurs, claiming that finding engineers to come work on Sky Hub is difficult because they don't want to attach themselves to something that deals with UFOs. Lamm also recognizes the problem, but notes that the vast majority of technological developments we enjoy today were once impossible.
"When we decide something is impossible or 'science fiction,' we forget that nearly everything was once seemingly impossible: flying, driving, satellites, landing on the moon. Yet human ingenuity has proved over and over again that nothing is impossible," Lamm said. "It is this inquiry into the impossible that makes giant breakthroughs in human progress. UFOs may not exist, but trying to figure out if they do (and looking at this question cross-functionally) is the sort of challenge that will force humanity to think in new ways, imagine new possibilities and develop technologies that may otherwise seem impossible."
Whether the UFO phenomenon is a total delusion, a hoax, or something fundamentally more interesting, there is little doubt that the mythos has driven much imagination. However, if there is some genuinely unknown aspect to unidentified aerial phenomena, humanity may be heading towards its next great technological revolution. After all, all it took for Japan to restructure its nation were four American gunboats chugging towards Edo.

Multi-Epoch Modeling of TXS 0506+056 and Implications for Long-Term High-Energy Neutrino Emission. (arXiv:1911.04010v2 [astro-ph.HE] UPDATED)
The IceCube report of a $\sim 3.5\sigma$ excess of $13\pm5$ neutrino events in the direction of the blazar TXS 05056+056 in 2014-2015 and the 2017 detection of a high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, during a gamma-ray flare from the same blazar, have revived the interest in scenarios for neutrino production in blazars. We perform comprehensive analyses on the long-term electromagnetic emission of TXS 05056+056 using optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI), and the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). We also perform numerical modeling of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in four epochs prior to 2017 with contemporaneous gamma-ray and lower energy (optical and/or X-ray) data. We find that the multi-epoch SEDs are consistent with a hybrid leptonic scenario, where the gamma-rays are produced in the blazar zone via external inverse Compton scattering of accelerated electrons, and high-energy neutrinos are produced via the photomeson production process of co-accelerated protons. The multi-epoch SEDs can be satisfactorily explained with the same jet parameters and variable external photon density and electron luminosity. Using the maximal neutrino flux derived for each epoch, we put an upper limit of $\sim0.4-2$ on the muon neutrino number in ten years of IceCube observations. Our results are consistent with the IceCube-170922A detection, which can be explained as an upper fluctuation from the average neutrino rate expected from the source, but in strong tension with the 2014-2015 neutrino flare.

A "Surreal" Atmospheric CO2 File Simply Blew All Earlier Measures Out of The Water
http://tinyurl.com/y4qw4qyc Humanity has been climbing a treacherous path, and now, wanting down from such nice heights, our footprints are clear to see. In the course of Could, carbon dioxide (CO2) ranges in our planet’s ambiance climbed over and above 415 parts per million (ppm) for the primary time for the reason that daybreak of our species. That was a single-day excessive. Now, for the second time in two months, scientists on the Scripps Establishment of Oceanography and NOAA have dangerous information.   Atop Hawaii’s largest volcano, the staff has recorded the highest monthly average of atmospheric CO2 for the reason that measurements first started, 61 years in the past. At 414.eight ppm, this new file sits on high of a seven-year chain of steep will increase, as in contrast year-on-year every Could. Looking over the previous few many years, the trail we took is obvious to see. Scientists on the Mauna Loa Atmospheric Baseline Observatory have been taking these readings way back to 1958, and in that point they’ve plotted these values on what is named a “Keeling Curve” – named after Charles David Keeling, who first seen an odd development. Within the early days at Mauna Loa, the common enhance of atmospheric CO2 from one yr to the following was roughly 0.7 ppm. By the 1990s that was extra like 1.5 ppm. Then, in the course of the subsequent decade, it snuck as much as 2.2 ppm. It will get worse. In 2019, each NOAA and Scripps discovered that this Could month-to-month common – the best level annually – is 3.5 ppm greater than it was in 2018. And whereas a single sky-high studying could be dismissed as an anomaly, exponential averages like this new file are more durable to disregard.   “The extra you again off and take a look at the massive image the extra you see the hand of human beings affecting the ambiance,” Ralph Keeling, the director of the Scripp’s CO2 program (and son of Charles David Keeling) told Inverse. “We’re in type of surreal territory proper now.”  On high of humankind’s record-breaking fossil gas use – which drives the overwhelming majority of all this variation – Keeling says these excessive charges of CO2 can also be helped alongside by gentle El Niño situations, like a fast rev to the engine. In contrast to local weather fashions and different projections, which are inclined to underplay the rapid pace of global warming, these new measurements are actual and provides us dependable clues about the place we’re, the place we now have been and perhaps even the place we’re going. “It is critically essential to have these correct, long-term measurements of CO2 so as to perceive how shortly fossil gas air pollution is altering our local weather,” says Pieter Tans, an atmospheric scientist with NOAA’s World Monitoring Division. These days, nevertheless, these modifications are occurring so quickly, they’ve a method of sneaking up on us. In April of this yr, the Mauna Loa observatory measured an average of more than 410 ppm, breaking an 800,000 yr higher threshold. In Could, after breaking the final word file, Keeling made a prediction that this yr’s Could month-to-month common enhance could be round Three ppm, somewhat than the latest 2.5 ppm. We now know it is even greater. “Many proposals have been made to mitigate international warming, however with out a fast lower of CO2 emissions from fossil fuels they’re just about futile,” says Tans. The latest findings had been introduced by The Scripps Institution of Oceanography.   Source link

The Human Eyes and Nocturnal Animal Eyes, Daydreaming, and Stardust: A Stellar Explanation
Raizza T. Dauz Article 7, August 7, 2017.                                                       A Space Odyssey
First, let us all look at the picture below where the part of the human eyes and nocturnal animal eyes are shown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The human eye is an organ which reacts to light and pressure. As a sense organ, the mammalian eye allows vision. Human eyes help provide a three dimensional, moving image, normally coloured in daylight. Rod and cone cells in the retina allow conscious light perception and vision including color differentiation and the perception of depth. The human eye can differentiate between about 10 million colors and is possibly capable of detecting a single photon.
Similar to the eyes of other mammals, the human eye’s non-image-forming photosensitive ganglion cells in the retina receive light signals which affect adjustment of the size of the pupil, regulation and suppression of the hormone melatonin and entrainment of the body clock.
The Connection to the Stars in the Night Sky:
1. The human eye, specifically the pupils, dilate or expand in response to mere thoughts of light or dark. Most people don’t spend much time pondering the diameter of their pupils. The fact is that we don’t have much control over our pupils, the openings in the center of the irises that allow light into the eyes. Short of chemical interventions—such as the eyedrops ophthalmologists use to widen their patients’ pupils for eye exams—the only way to dilate or shrink the pupils is by changing the amount of available light. Switch off the lamp, and your pupils will widen to take in more light. Step out into the sun, and your pupils will narrow.
Mechanical though they may be, the workings of pupils are allowing researchers to explore the parallels between imagination and perception. In a recent series of experiments, University of Oslo cognitive neuroscientists Bruno Laeng and Unni Sulutvedt began by displaying triangles of varying brightness on a computer screen while monitoring the pupils of the study volunteers. The subjects’ pupils widened for dark shapes and narrowed for bright ones, as expected. Next, participants were instructed to simply imagine the same triangles. Remarkably, their pupils constricted or dilated as if they had been staring at the actual shapes. Laeng and Sulutvedt saw the same pattern when they asked subjects to imagine more complex scenes, such as a sunny sky or a dark room.
However, this is not related to why you see stars in your vision. That’s another explanation. There are two main causes of seeing stars in your vision. One is the result of a blow to your head. This type of injury can scatter nerve signals in your brain and affect your vision temporarily. The other cause is a problem with your retina. If that’s the reason, it can be triggered by something other than an injury.
2. There are animals—nocturnal animals that relies on the stars in the night sky. To cite an example, Dung Beetle is one of them. The Dung Beetle uses the milky way galaxy for navigation at night. The beetle uses the polarized light from the sun for navigation, but what did they do at night? They thought it could be the moon, but what about moonless nights? It turned out that they were using the milky way, which was confirmed by taking them to a planetarium. The scientists found out that the beetles used the visual cues of the milky way instead of something like the magnetic field. And it is because of their eyes.
Night Vision (On human eyes)
Night vision is the ability to see in low light conditions. Whether by biological or technological means, night vision is made possible by a combination of two approaches: sufficient spectral range, and sufficient intensity range. Humans have poor night vision compared to many animals, in part because the human eye lacks a tapetum lucidum.
Since stars typically emit light with shorter wavelengths, the light from stars will be in the blue-green color spectrum. Therefore, using red light to navigate would not desensitize the receptors used to detect star light. Using red light for night vision is less effective for people with red–green color blindness, due to their insensitivity to red light.
Night Vision (On animal eyes)
Nocturnal mammals have rods with unique properties that make enhanced night vision possible. The nuclear pattern of their rods changes shortly after birth to become inverted. In contrast to conventional rods, inverted rods have heterochromatin in the center of their nuclei and euchromatin and other transcription factors along the border. In addition, the outer layer of cells in the retina (the outer nuclear layer) in nocturnal mammals is thick due to the millions of rods present to process the lower light intensities. The anatomy of this layer in nocturnal mammals is such that the rod nuclei, from individual cells, are physically stacked such that light will pass through eight to ten nuclei before reaching the photoreceptor portion of the cells. Rather than being scattered, the light is passed to each nucleus individually, by a strong lensing effect due to the nuclear inversion, passing out of the stack of nuclei, and into the stack of ten photorecepting outer segments. The net effect of this anatomical change is to multiply the light sensitivity of the retina by a factor of eight to ten with no loss of focus.
Second, let us talk about how daydreaming is related to stars.
Daydreaming is a short-term detachment from one’s immediate surroundings, during which a person’s contact with reality is blurred and partially substituted by a visionary fantasy, especially one of happy, pleasant thoughts, hopes or ambitions, imagined as coming to pass, and experienced while awake.
There are many types of daydreams, and there is no consistent definition among psychologists, however the characteristic that is common to all forms of daydreaming meets the criteria for mild dissociation. Negative aspects of daydreaming were stressed after human work became dictated by the motion of the tool. As craft production was largely replaced by assembly line that did not allow for any creativity, no place was left for positive aspects of daydreaming. It not only became associated with laziness, but also with danger. For example, in the late 19th century, Toni Nelson argued that some daydreams with grandiose fantasies are self-gratifying attempts at “wish fulfillment”. Still in the 1950s, some educational psychologists warned parents not to let their children daydream, for fear that the children may be sucked into “neurosis and even psychosis”.
Freudian psychology interpreted daydreaming as expression of the repressed instincts similarly to those revealing themselves in nighttime dreams. Like nighttime dreams, daydreams, also, are an example of wish-fulfillment (based on infantile experiences), and are allowed to surface because of relaxed censorship. He pointed out that, in contrast to nighttime dreams, which are often confusing and incoherent, there seems to be a process of “secondary revision” in fantasies that makes them more lucid, like daydreaming. The state of daydreaming is a kind of liminal state between waking (with the ability to think rationally and logically) and sleeping. They stand in much the same relation to the childhood memories from which they are derived as do some of the Baroque palaces of Rome to the ancient ruins whose pavements and columns have provided the material for the more recent structures.
Imagination is usually thought of as “a private and subjective experience, which is not accompanied by strongly felt or visible physiological changes,” Laeng says. But the new findings, published in Psychological Science, challenge that idea. The study suggests that imagination and perception may rely on a similar set of neural processes: when you picture a dimly lit restaurant, your brain and body respond, at least to some degree, as if you were in that restaurant.
The new experiments complement popular methods for studying consciousness by providing visual stimulation to participants without their awareness. Joel Pearson, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of New South Wales in Australia, explains that mental imagery research takes the opposite approach, allowing subjects conscious awareness of a mental image without the accompanying stimulation. Perhaps by combining the two approaches, scientists can better understand how consciousness works.
Third, how are we connected to stardust?
Did you ever wonder where you came from? That is the stuff that’s inside your body like your bones, organs, muscles…etc.  All of these things are made of various molecules and atoms. But where did these little ingredients come from? And how were they made? The answer to these questions will take us back to a time long ago when the universe was much different than it is now. However, the physics was the same.
“We are a way for the universe to know itself. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return. And we can, because the cosmos is also within us. We’re made of star stuff,” Sagan famously stated in one episode.
His statement sums up the fact that the carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in our bodies, as well as atoms of all other heavy elements, were created in previous generations of stars over 4.5 billion years ago. Because humans and every other animal as well as most of the matter on Earth contain these elements, we are literally made of star stuff, said Chris Impey, professor of astronomy at the University of Arizona.
“All organic matter containing carbon was produced originally in stars,” Impey told Life’s Little Mysteries. “The universe was originally hydrogen and helium, the carbon was made subsequently, over billions of years.”
How star stuff got to Earth
When it has exhausted its supply of hydrogen, it can die in a violent explosion, called a nova. The explosion of a massive star, called a supernova, can be billions of times as bright as the Sun , according to “Supernova,” (World Book, Inc., 2005). Such a stellar explosion throws a large cloud of dust and gas into space, with the amount and composition of the material expelled varying depending on the type of supernova.
A supernova reaches its peak brightness a few days after it first occurred, during which time it may outshine an entire galaxy of stars. The dead star then continues to shine intensely for several weeks before gradually fading from view, according to “Supernova.”
The material from a supernova eventually disperses throughout interstellar space. The oldest stars almost exclusively consisted of hydrogen and helium, with oxygen and the rest of the heavy elements in the universe later coming from supernova explosions, according to “Cosmic Collisions: The Hubble Atlas of Merging Galaxies,” (Springer, 2009).
“It’s a well-tested theory,” Impey said. “We know that stars make heavy elements, and late in their lives, they eject gas into the medium between stars so it can be part of subsequent stars and planets (and people).”
Since stardust atoms are the heavier elements, the percentage of star mass in our body is much more impressive. Most of the hydrogen in our body floats around in the form of water. The human body is about 60% water and hydrogen only accounts for 11% of that water mass. Even though water consists of two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen, hydrogen has much less mass. We can conclude that 93% of the mass in our body is stardust. Just think, long ago someone may have wished upon a star that you are made of.

When night fell, at exactly 22:30, Yersin lifted anchor and started to move away from the dock. Really moved by the historic moment, YCM members joined Prince Albert branding Red & White Monaco flags to salute the departure of the Yersin. It was truly a memorable ocassion that will forever be remembered.

Monaco Explorations is based on an international and multidisciplinary campaign combining natural and human sciences, descriptions of places and environments that are rarely explored as well as the study of the behavior of the species present, their interactions, ethnology and relationships with the atmosphere and the Earth. The first stage in Yersin’s expedition will be Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean, for a project around monk seals in danger of extinction, by establishing cartography of the animals migration to help the local researchers.
“The Yersin is an exceptional vessel, a boat for cruising also designed for research purposes, and an impressive autonomy of several days or even several months. She keeps alive the tradition of Prince Albert I and Captain Cousteau’s boats and other explorers who left from Monaco. It is quite moving and extraordinary to think that thanks to Mr Fiat and his family, and his attachment to the Yacht Club de Monaco, this great adventure, where science and education take centre stage, can be revived,” said HSH Prince Albert II.
François Fiat, the owner and a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco, is also the first La Belle Classe Superyachts ambassador. This prestigious label unites owners determined to safeguard maritime heritage and promote new technologies towards sustainable development. It is a philosophy very much in line with three Monegasque Institutions that have encouraged the Yersin project: the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Oceanographic Institute and the Monaco Scientific Centre (CSM).
“It is a flawless vessel, zero emissions, without carbon imprint into the atmosphere”, assures his Captain Jean Dumarais. “On board Yersin, 70% of the space is dedicated to technology, 230% to dwelling and comfort, the inverse of a yacht,” continued the Captain. However, in the leisure areas, the cinema room with fifteen armchairs, cozy salons, and a sports area guarantee a comfortable stay.
About Yersin
The Yersin is a versatile and modular transoceanic ship designed for travel and exploration, offering the scientific community conditions of maximum comfort and safety, carrying the advanced technologies for research and communication. (Photo insert: Yersin at YCM  @CelinaLafuentedeLavotha)
The vessel, that has a complex laboratory on board, was named in honor of Doctor Alexandre Yersin (1863 – 1943), French-Swiss doctor, bacteriologist and explorer celebrated for discovering the pest bacillus and the elaboration of the first serum to cure the disease.
Created by Pierre Jacques Kubis Naval Design in collaboration with the in-house team, Piriou Engineering, the motor yacht has been designed for world cruising in extreme conditions (-20°C/+50°C). Built to passenger ship standards (hence the term Motor-Vessel), the construction of Yersinwas entrusted to French shipyard Piriou in Concarneau. No agent, no naval architect and no designer: François Fiat, his wife, his Captain, Jean Dumarais, and his Chief Engineer, Yordan Hristov designed her, monitored the whole construction process and selected the equipment and fittings themselves.
Francois Fiat explains that the M/V Yersin has been built around the A.S.E. project, with three key objectives in mind as to how the vessel will be deployed: Adventure, Science and Education.
A for Adventure: “It has been a dream of mine since childhood – inspired by Tintin, Prince Albert 1’s Hirondelle and Captain Cousteau’s Calypso – which within three years has become a reality. I wanted a boat that could sail anywhere, in any weather, with a reinforced hull for the ice. As her vocation is exploration we wanted to set aside 70% of the space to communal and technical areas.”
S for Science: The vessel is packed with eco-friendly technology. “We have electric propulsion, supplied on demand by generators as one still cannot store energy in batteries. At a cruising speed of 11 knots we consume 380 litres of diesel, half of what we would consume with diesel engines. At a slow-steaming speed of 9 knots, our total consumption (electricity, heating / air conditioning included) falls to 180 liters an hour, giving us autonomy for 12,000 miles and 40 days at sea with 40 people on board. Nothing is discharged into the sea: we recycle grey water for washing the boat for example, and produce freshwater for all our needs. But we only do oil changes in ports equipped for this, and then there’s no question of introducing foreign particles to an environment hundreds of miles from where we have taken water on for the desalination system.”
E for Education: “We can take children on board to educate future generations on protecting the environment. This is also what we did at the event with HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco. The broad smiles and messages they retained after a day on the water convinced us that this mission for the vessel is a very valid one.”

How to Keep Your Neck Safe in Shoulderstand
I was in one of my first “real” yoga classes after years of practicing in a gym setting. It was the end of class and my teacher cued Shoulderstand, one final inversion before Savasana. I looked around the room, thought, “I can do that,” and I did. It’s only in hindsight that I know that I wasn’t yet ready for this powerful pose. Many yogis swear by Shoulderstand, but it is has also been noted as one of the riskiest yoga poses. Utilizing modifications, choosing alternatives and using the breath as a guide will help you to protect the precious and delicate bones in your neck from injury.
The path of yoga calls upon us to practice discernment (viveka in Sanskrit), both on and off the mat. We are asked to not only choose, but to choose wisely. All of our postures, from Mountain Pose to Savasana to Shoulderstand should be practiced with an open heart and a keen mind. Just because we can do something, doesn’t mean that we necessarily should.
How to Keep Your Neck Safe in Shoulderstand
Read on for 5 ways to modify Shoulderstand to gain the utmost benefit from the pose with the least risk to your neck. Remember, inversions are contraindicated for anyone with uncontrolled blood pressure or glaucoma.
1. Try a Block

Using a block is a mindful way to modify your Shoulderstand. Lie on your back with your knees bent. Settle the soles of your feet evenly into the ground. Lift your bottom and place a block (on its lowest height to begin) beneath your sacrum (the triangular space below your lower back and above your tailbone), about even with the waistband of your pants. Gently lift one leg into the air and then the next. The block should feel like it’s completely and safely supporting your lower body (the sacrum is a flat surface of fused bones). If not, bring your feet to the ground and adjust the block. Your hands can remain by your sides, with palms up if you are seeking energy and palms down if you’d like to ground and center. If the low setting of your block feels okay, you can eventually shift to the medium or high setting, taking care to monitor your upper back and neck for any pain or discomfort. As with all postures, listen to your body, lowering or removing the block as needed.
2. Go Spidey Style

The wall is often overlooked as a useful prop in yoga classes. Never be afraid to get up and move your mat to make use of this great resource. To modify Shoulderstand using the wall, channel your inner Spiderman. Come to your back with your legs up the wall. This is also a great inversion option if you’d like to stay right here. To proceed into a Shoulderstand variation, begin to walk your feet up the wall, keeping your knees bent. Release your elbows to the mat and bring your hands to your lower back for support. As you gain confidence in this pose and learn whether it’s right for your body, you can play with lifting one leg off the wall at a time. Notice that as your legs move up the wall the pressure on your neck increases. Be mindful and take your time. Sometimes the most powerful practice is in choosing the gentlest option.
3. Soften with Blankets

Place three square-fold blankets on the ground. Lie down with your back and shoulders on the blankets, allowing your head and neck to come off the blankets to the mat below. Place your elbows beneath you and begin to draw your knees toward your chest. Allow your hands to come to your lower back for balance and support. You can play with lifting one or both legs toward the sky as you progress in this pose. The blankets will provide a cushion and decrease the intensity of your weight on your neck.
4. Be a Bug

If none of these Shoulderstand modifications work for you, bugging out can actually be a good thing. Bug pose is a safe alternative to Shoulderstand. Begin on your back with your knees bent and the soles of your feet on the ground. Lift both feet into the air, keeping your neck, back and torso on the ground. If this feels okay, lift your arms toward the sky too. I often encourage my students to make this a playful moment in their practice. Twirl your ankles. Wiggle your fingers. Bend your knees. Spread your legs into a wide straddle. Eventually, you might wish to settle into stillness and allow the power of the inversion to restore and renew you. Remain here for as long as the posture serves you.
5. Use the Breath
No matter which expression of Shoulderstand you choose, use the breath to guide your practice and to help you determine where modifications are warranted. Pain is not the only indicator that you’ve blown past your boundaries. If you lose your breath practice, that’s often a good sign that you aren’t ready for or aren’t built for that expression of the pose.
Shoulderstand is not for everyone and many teachers advise against it due to the risk of injury. Again, our jobs as students and teachers is to practice viveka, discerning what serves our highest good in body, mind and spirit.
