okay so I'm a brit by birth. I've lived in the uk my whole life, have never left until 2 weeks ago when I flew to canada, alone, for a 3 month internship. here are some of my observations about canada (specifically toronto, as that's where I'm staying) thus far: -smoking and vaping is not normalised at all here compared to in the uk. the uni campus I'm staying at is completely non-smoking, which is something that would never fly in the uk. this is definitely a good thing btw -people will not hesitate to compliment you if they like your outfit. I've been waiting around where needed and people have just,,, complimented me out of nowhere -I'm not sure whether it's because I'm in a major city, but the amount of homelessness is shocking. as part of that, the homeless community seems to consist of lots of drug addicts. I have the utmost sympathy for them and hope they're okay, but it's a little shocking to see sometimes -the public transport is amazing. again, may be because it's a major city. but all the Canadians I've met have complained about it, and I'm just here in wonder because I can easily get anywhere fairly quickly!!!! -I thought canada would be colder. I know it's summer, but I've been consistently boiling since I got here -groceries are insanely expensive. I can't wait to get back and go to a big Tesco!! -fanta is wrong here. why is it so orange??? why does it taste like that??? I've found a British shop that does proper Fanta, and I need to go stock up -I miss proper chips -I miss regional accents!! I feel like all the Canadian accents I hear are the same -it's also true what they say about Canadians loving the british accent. however, I have a very specific regional accent that people seem to find difficult to understand, so I've found myself schooling myself into a more RP acceptable accent -your banking system is very strange and I don't like it

Normally I take rejection well (not true) but to see the rejection email right after getting off the call with my therapist still crying? “Our internship is competitive, and for you to get to this point speaks highly of your skill and attributes” just say you want me to die in a ditch and that I’m a dumb bad editor.

Well I can see why you'd be loathe to leave, then, even if the pay/lack of raises or promotions situation isn't great. Hard to find a workplace that pleasant and flexible. I've definitely turned down recruiters offering higher paying jobs because I don't want to leave the good benefits and flexibility of my current workplace (especially to go somewhere they expect me to come into the office all the time and work well over 40 hours a week... fuck that). But I've also been promoted twice in five years and am making much better than minimum wage, so I'd still encourage you to at least look at some other options.

There will always be trade-offs in any workplace, but you might find one that has a better overall balance for you. It sounds like you're talented and diligent, and you might be able to find a company which is still a decent place to work but also recognizes the value you bring and compensates you accordingly. And worst case, you could probably return to your current employer after pursuing other opportunities if they don't work out the way you'd hoped. It sounds like your current place would be silly not to hire you back again, and if you're coming from somewhere else that paid you better, you could probably negotiate a higher rate when returning. ("Well I really loved working here, but my current position pays $X per hour. Is there any chance you could match that?")

Yesterday, Oct. 17/23 was my last day at practicum.

Ang saya lang na nagustuhan nila ung performance ko during that 1 month stay sa DI department.

Blessed to be surrounded by these clerks as well at sobrang chill lang ng work everyday.

Sobrang blessed pa at today, Oct. 18/23, first day ko as an employee!! Another thank you Lord moment ulit kasi ako ung na-hire na kapalit ni ate Lenn habang nasa maternity leave sya.

A couple of things. That Livestream where Mikaila left after being scolded and Lily didn't even notice was a part of it. Also, the state of Mikaila's apartment has been weighing heavily on my mind. I found out today about Mikaila's cat and, I'll be honest my heart breaks for her. My father's partner is a hoarder and I lost an animal

The other part of it is the election. Mikaila is a transfeminine person living in the United States in the wake Trump being elected for president again. With Project 2025 on the horizon I'm sure that Mikaila is eager to get out of the US. Lily should be prioritizing that and it just feels like she isn't.

It took me less than a week after I obtained funds to get a boyfriend I had been dating from the states up to Canada after I had obtained the money. He had a six month visa even without any job experience, me being homeless, and having little prospects outside of a paid studio internship. We ended up breaking up but we did start the application process for his residence, and as long as you have your birth certificate you can apply for residence while on a visa. That's even without them being legally married. This is an emergency, not just with the election but because of the state of the apartment. If Lily loved her she would get her out of there.
