Whumptober 2024: No. 12 - Underground Caverns/"Just A Little More"
Title: Tight Spaces
Characters: Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens (Zowens)
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 1454
A/N: Welcome to another addition to Whumptober, Day 13. Just as a heads up, this fic is all about claustrophobia, so if that is triggering to you don't read. Also, I based this fanfiction off of Caverne de St-Léonard (Saint-Léonard Cave) in Montréal, Québec, Canada. They give guided spelunking tours, but for the purpose of this fanfiction we are dropping the guide and replacing them with Sami. So, here we go. I hope you don't mind my artistic license with this one. Enjoy!
Summary: Sami Zayn doesn't know Kevin Owens as much as he thought he did, putting them in a situation that they both soon regret. Can Sami get through to Kevin and get them out of it?
Cross posted on AO3 under user wrestlinginjeans.
Tumblr media
Kevin could see Sami practically vibrating with excitement in the driver’s seat as he made the last turn and pulled into the parking lot of the attraction that Sami had insisted they go to. It had been a surprise, planned weeks in advance when Sami knew that they would both have the same day off. With Kevin on Smackdown and Sami on Raw, they hadn’t been able to spend as much time together as either of them would have liked so this was Sami’s attempt at rectifying that. “We’re here!” Sami says, a smile that Kevin knows like the back of his hand illuminating his face.
“Unhelpful, Sami. Where are we?”
“You’ll see, come on!” Sami said, wanting to keep it a surprise for as long as he could. Long fingers wrap around Kevin’s bicep for a moment with an insistent tug before they disappear, and the slighter man is hopping out of the car and into the parking lot.
“We got here just in time for the opening, so there shouldn’t be too many people!” Sami babbles happily as they make their way to the entrance. “I can’t believe you’ve never been here before, Kev. You’ve lived here all your life!”
“How do you know I’ve never been here? You won’t even tell me where ‘here’ is?”
“Because I asked you and you said you hadn’t.”
Kevin takes a moment to wrack his brain and remembers Sami asking him numerous seemingly pointless questions, but Sami had asked him a lot in the past few weeks, and he couldn’t think of exactly what question Sami was referring to.
“Sami, you are always talking about one thing or another and we are always jumping around between conversations. It’s hard to keep track of one thread of your thoughts let alone all of them. Unhelpful.”  Kevin states in mock irritation with no real heat to it, Sami smiling happily and giving a small shrug in response.
A moment later, they are at the ticketing booth. Sami pays for them both and when the worker hands Sami two bright orange hardhats with headlamps attached, Kevin begins to bite down on the inside of his cheek nervously.
As Sami tosses Kevin his hardhat, placing his own on his head in one swift motion, Kevin attempts to regain his inward composure. From the outside, he was totally fine but inside he was beginning to worry.
“Sami… What do we need these for?” Kevin asks quietly, looking down at the hardhat still in his hand.
In another swift motion, Sami grabs the piece of gear out of Kevin’s hand and places it on his head. He points down towards a wrought iron staircase, the happy smile still on his face as he buckles the chin strap for Kevin.
“I think the term is spelunking, silly right? Have you heard of it? Essentially, it’s cave diving.”
No. Out of all the things Sami wanted to do on their day off, cave diving was at the top of his list? Kevin couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Sami, oblivious in that moment to Kevin’s internal battle, was already pulling him by the arm down the stairs and into the start of the cave system. Sami pulling him along was the only way he would ever set foot in a cave. He was only able to take one steadying breath before he was pulled along into the cave, his eyes immediately beginning to adjust to the lack of light.
Sami, having dropped his hand from Kevin’s arm was moving his body in a slow circle, his eyes directed upward, and his mouth slightly parted in awe at the rock formations around them.
“Isn’t this incredible, Kev?” Sami said, his tone a mix of awestruck and disbelief. “I’ve been here several times, and every time I come back it always feels like the first time.”
Sami, clearly not afraid of tight spaces but curious as to why Kevin had gone so quiet, dropped his gaze back down to eye level.
“Kev?” Sami asks quietly, a questioning look on his face.
Kevin, never one to voice any of his concerns, immediately shrugged off the question.
“Yeah, Sami. I’m good. Let’s go.”
Not ten minutes later and in a particularly tight part of a passageway which Sami could fit through with ease, but Kev couldn’t, Kevin was on the verge of a breakdown. Sami, leading the way, didn’t realize until it was too late how Kevin was reacting to the situation.
“Sa-mi…” Kevin managed to get out, the rush of blood in his ears only surpassed by his heartbeat thrumming like a drum beat. His heart seemingly threatening to burst from his chest was the only thing that he was aware of in that moment.
Sami having just made it to the next opening, spun around to say something to Kevin who he assumed was right behind him, the comment fading from his lips when he saw Kevin not making progress towards him.
“Kev? You good?” Sami asks, his smile fading as he takes a couple steps towards the exit he had just pushed himself through. When he got no response from the dark-haired wrestler, Sami directs his gaze to read Kevin’s eyes. Sami had seen that gaze in his best friend’s grey orbs before and it didn’t bode well for either of them.
“Kev. Kevin, come on. Just keep moving forward. You’ve got this.” Sami encourages, placing his hands on the exit and bending down slightly to get a better angle of his friend. “Kevin Owens, snap out of it.”
Grey eyes, slightly clouded in his panicked state, dart to Sami’s own hazel ones.
“That’s better. Come on, take one step at a time. Breathe, Kev, I am right here.”
Kevin, unable to comprehend in that moment how Sami could possibly breathe so easily given the situation, inched slightly forward only to slam his eyes shut. He couldn’t breathe, he couldn’t feel anything, he only wanted to get away, but he couldn’t. Would this be it for him? Of all the dangerous things he has done in his life, Kevin Owens would go down as “died by spelunking”? What nonsense.
“Kevin! Keep moving forward. I can get us out of here, but you need to clear the way first.”
With Sami’s words once again falling on seemingly deaf ears, he climbs back into the small passageway. In a moment, warm hands make contact with Kevin’s forearms. Sami, making a quick assessment of Kevin’s state, notices how quickly he is breathing and how a sheen of sweat had formed on Kevin’s skin. Inwardly cursing himself, Sami wraps his fingers around Kevin’s forearms with just enough force to attempt to get a reaction from the shorter man.
“Kev. I’m right here. You and I are going to back out slowly, okay?” Sami instructs quietly, glancing behind Kevin to make a quick mental estimate of how long the passageway went. While not an ideal situation, Sami was worried that if they moved forward and made it to the next opening, he wouldn’t be able to convince Kevin to go back into such a confined space even if it meant guaranteed freedom.
“Kev, you got that? I need some kind of response from you.” Sami asks gently, giving Kevin’s forearms a gentle but insistent squeeze. Kevin his eyes directed downward at Sami’s hands on his arms, takes in a shuddering breath before nodding his head once.
“Great. Alright, now I need you to start backing up slowly. I’m not letting you go. You make a motion, and I am going to match that, okay?” Sami instructs slowly, giving Kevin’s arms a reassuring squeeze as he removes one of his hands to give himself better leverage for what they were about to do. “Alright, Kev. Let’s take that first step now, okay? Ensemble.”
The passageway that they were currently in was tight to the point where they had to crawl through on their hands and knees. So, when Kev made the first motion back towards the entrance, Sami couldn’t help but sigh inwardly in relief. Kev was listening to him; they would be out of here in no time. After several minutes of slow moving, Kevin exited the passageway stiffly followed by Sami. Leaping down from the ledge, Sami immediately made his way to Kevin.
“Kev, how are you feeling now?” Sami asks urgently, his hands reaching out towards Kevin, his fingers finding his friends upper arms. Sami sees Kevin take one steadying breath, licking his lips once before bringing one of his hands up to brush against one of Sami’s.
“I’m good, Sami. But the next time you want to go spelunking, drag Seth or somebody else with you.”
Translations: Ensemble – Together

If you plan on flying around the country in 2025 and beyond, you might want to listen up.
You have about 365 days to make your state-issued driver’s license or identification “Real ID” compliant, per the Department of Homeland Security.
The Real ID compliance is part of a larger act passed by Congress in 2005 to set “minimum security standards” for the distribution of identification materials, including driver’s licenses. This means that certain federal agencies, like the Transportation Security Administration or DHS, won’t be able to accept state-issued forms of identification without the Real ID seal.
It's taken a while for the compliance to stick, with DHS originally giving a 2020 deadline before pushing it back a year, then another two years and another two years after that due to “backlogged transactions” at MVD offices nationwide, according to previous USA TODAY reports.
You won’t be able to board federally regulated commercial aircraft, enter nuclear power plants, or access certain facilities if your identification documents aren’t Real ID compliant by May 7, 2025.
Here’s what we know about Real IDs, including where to get one and why you should think about getting one.
Do I have to get a Real ID?
Not necessarily.
If you have another form of identification that TSA accepts, there probably isn’t an immediate reason to obtain one, at least for travel purposes. But if you don’t have another form of identification and would like to travel around the country in the near future, you should try to obtain one.
Here are all the other TSA-approved forms of identification:
◾ State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License
◾ U.S. passport
◾ U.S. passport card
◾ DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
◾ U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
◾ Permanent resident card
◾ Border crossing card
◾ An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized, Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe
◾ HSPD-12 PIV card
◾ Foreign government-issued passport
◾ Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
◾ Transportation worker identification credential
◾ U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
◾ U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
◾ Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
However, federal agencies “may only accept” state-issued driver’s licenses or identification cards that are Real ID compliant if you are trying to gain access to a federal facility. That includes TSA security checkpoints.
Enhanced driver’s licenses, only issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont, are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards, according to DHS.
What can I use my Real ID for?
For most people, it's all about boarding flights.
You can only use your Real ID card to obtain access to "nuclear power plants, access certain facilities, or board federally regulated commercial aircrafts," according to DHS.
The cards can't be used to travel across any border, whether that's Canada, Mexico, or any other international destination, according to DHS.
All you have to do to get a Real ID is to make time to head over to your local department of motor vehicles.
Every state is different, so the documents needed to verify your identity will vary. DHS says that at minimum, you will be asked to produce your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address of principal residence and lawful status.
The only difference between the state-issued forms of identification you have now and the Real ID-compliant card you hope to obtain is a unique marking stamped in the right-hand corner. The mark stamped on your Real ID compliant cards depends on the state.

The more I read pro-choice arguments, the more pro-life I become.
It really starts with something as simple as asking pro-choicers to not use foster kids in the abortion debate. And that's a neutral thing to ask. It doesn't argue a stance on abortion one way or another. Just a simple acknowledgement that these abortion arguments stigmatize foster kids. Kids see these arguments and they internalize these beliefs that they are unwanted, unloved and they should be dead. I think it puts them on a path to social ostracization and suicide ideation. This is why I sound like a broken record and I keep saying pro-choicers exclusively mention foster kids in the abortion debate.
When are we going to start talking about the aging out statistics in a proactive way instead of framing foster kids as facing so much adversity that they are better off dead?
I'll remember that when I'm getting my drivers license in my 30s. For context here foster kids are often not taught how to drive because foster parents are unwilling or unable to put foster kids on their insurance. Foster kids often miss out on important life skill milestones that other people take for granted. In some places like Canada they are offering driving programs to foster kids who aged out of care but there is an age cap (they keep the age cut off close to the aging out age but since they recently introduced this program older former foster kids are excluded from these programs).
There has been times where I was really struggling in life and when I was speaking to a crisis line they suggested that I contact the immigration center because a lot of what I was struggling with was how foster care didn't really adequately prepare me for the real world before evicting me from the system. I had questions on how to navigate the system and services that are available to me. Some basic things like how to get healthcare - I really didn't know. And so I was told to contact the immigration center because a lot of my concerns were the same concerns immigrants have. So when I contacted the immigration center I was turned away because I was not an immigrant.
When I go to 211 pages, there are resources for LGBTQ, newcomer to Canada support, addiction support, disability support, etc. There isn't much resources that pertain specifically to my demographic. So we encounter discrimination like at the immigration center where they don't even want to have a conversation with us even if our situation requires it.
Sometimes we still need support after we are over a certain age. Lacking family support leaves us in a vulnerable place for our entire lives. I'm not exactly arguing that all of our support needs to come from government programs either. Some people are natural mentors and former foster kids can find support in their communities but they may feel that isn't an option if they are constantly getting the message that they are unwanted, unloved, should be dead and nobody cares about foster kids. It is as if pro-choice people don't even consider themselves to be the village that ostracizes the foster child.
So thank you. That's my two cents.

that’s so crazy about your name change. you’d think a lot of that red tape would be solved by digitization. like i know that it’s much more complicated than that but still. it’s not 1980 where one department literally does not receive notice of something until they receive it in the physical mail. how tf is a name change not like. filling out an electronic form then one annoying visit to your provincial insurance department for a new drivers license
This is honestly a problem with federalism! Canada has a decentralised administrative government, and not just a disconnect between provincial and federal governments, but also a disconnect between departments across the same level of government (healthcare is handled provincially for example, but also all segmented and broken up into local regions - they used to be called LIHNs, I think they changed it recently though so idk how they segment healthcare now).
I’m not super familiar with all the internal workings so this is a very simplified explanation, but another issue is, because of this decentralisation, database records and database software can sometimes be incompatible with one another or otherwise difficult to transfer between databases. Each region/government/department might be using different private software to store and manage data. The way entries are coded, how citizens/clients/patients are identified in databases, how those data get formatted and how they interface with other internal systems, etc., can vary across region and level of government. I know this is especially a problem in healthcare - I have a colleague in healthcare who told me about what a nightmare it was to transfer all patient records over to a new software system; this was a single healthcare department updating their own internal software, so they weren’t transferring it anywhere else, just updating their own shit. one of the problems was that the way dates were formatted in the new system followed the American format of Day/Month/Year (because it was American software), while the old system used the Canadian format Month/Day/Year, and because that formatting difference wasn’t caught when they tried to launch their transfer process, it was a fucking disaster and needed to be manually fixed by their IT people. And that was just the date column! So imagine now trying to get dozens of different governmental departments attempting to share data with one another across multiple platforms and data storage software.
Again I’m not familiar with all the various intricacies and whatnot, there’s probably also privacy and data sharing stuff that I don’t know about, and I’ve only worked with a few government databases before, but (to the best of my knowledge) because there is actually no centralised master database that can be directly altered (and therefore automatically alter all sub-databases below it), you have to change your name individually in every department/institution, which each have their own separate applications, documentation requirements, wait times, and processes. This is one argument for centralising administrative processes in government!

What are some of your favorite cities you’ve been to? Boston, Ogunquit/York (ME), Nashville, Lake Delton (WI).
Would you allow your children to date prior to 16? I'm not having children, let’s start there.
Did you ever go through a phase where you thought guys in bands were ‘hot?’ Sure.
What’s something about adult life you were never warned of or prepared for? All of it.
Did your parents teach you proper table manners when you were growing up? Yeah.
What was the last thing you baked? Cookies.
Do you live more than 5 hours away from the nearest international border? If you drove, yes, it would take just a hair over 5 hours to get to the closest point of Canada from Chicago.
Does your town have a farmer’s market? Several.
What’s the westernmost point you’ve been to? Wendover, Nevada.
What was the last restaurant you made a reservation at? Eris, though technically it was my friend who made it.
When did you last feel lonely? I haven’t really felt lonely in a long time. Or at least, what I would call lonely. I’ve felt like pieces of me were missing when missing my long distance friends, but I wouldn’t say that’s “lonely.”
Can you easily tell when others are masking their true emotions? Sure, sometimes.
How often do you wash your car? At a car wash? RARELY. I can’t even tell you the last time I did. It feels silly getting a car wash when your car is like 30% rust lol. But I clean out the inside at least once a month. As clean as I can get it lol.

Which app on your phone do you tend to get the most notifications from? Uhhhhhhh I have push notifications off on the apps I’d get the most notifications on lol. If I had tik tok notification on for “likes” on comments I leave, my phone wouldn’t shut up. I looked the other day at my notifications on that app and I had like 1300 something likes yikes.

Have you ever kissed a smoker? Yes.
What is the minimum age to obtain a driver’s license in your state/country? Do you think this is an appropriate age? 16. It’s fine, I don’t care one way or the other.
If you won the lottery, do you think any of your family members would ask you to give them some of your money? Yes.
What is the craziest thing you’ve seen happen at your workplace? I don’t know.
Do you own any home automation gadgets like wifi thermostats or wifi bulbs? We have Alexa outlets.
What is something you gave up on after many failed attempts? Reading for fun again.
How old were you when you started to seriously think about what career path you wanted to pursue? I’ll let you know.
Have you ever disliked a book so much that you didn’t finish it? Uh huh.
Would you rather read a book, or listen to the audiobook? Audio plz.
Do you think tomorrow will be a better day than today? YESSSSSS I don’t have to work for TWO WEEKS after todaaaayyyyy

Life Update:
So eto na nga.. charot!
November 2022: I applied in Metacom and they led me to Alorica. To cut the long story short, I ended up as a Tech Support.
December 2022: We started the NeoQuest? It's like an orientation that explains what Tech Support really is and the account that we are going to handle. Hindi ko sure. Basta ganon. And then that's where I met my co-workers. Almost all of the team had their experience mainly as a Customer Service. And the 3 of us were newbies. As in wala talaga kaming customer experience ever. Tapos online pa that time yung NeoQuest, eh hindi ako Techy. So super nakakapanibago.
NeoQuest was done and we transferred onsite for Prod Training. Dun ko mas nakilala mga kasamahan ko sa work. We were 10 trainees and parang magkaka edad lang kami. Actually, na late kami mostly because of the traffic. Monday ba naman e, even me na nasanay ng maaga, na late. And you know what's funny? I left my Driver's License while I was driving motorcycle. Gaano katanga? HAHA!
So this is where the difficult time comes in.
January 2023: Kasi babalik pa ako ng Abu Dhabi eh I can't stay long, tapos meron din akong kasama sa work na sasampa din ng barko any time itong January so nag iisip kami ng alternative way paano namin i hahandle ang sitwasyon if ever man na nakapasa kami sa Client Certification. Naghahanap na kami ng date kung kailan namin ibebreak yung news so ang hirap.
Then we had our internal certification in which both of us passed. Client Certification came. So what I did was to just passed the internal certification and made a twist sa Client Certification. Since hindi ko rin naman maintindihan si Client eh nagpadala na lang ako sa kaba hahaha! And I failed the Client Certification. No regrets. It was fun!
Ang saya din sa BPO. At napakaswerte ko talaga sa mga nakakatrabaho ko. Hindi ako nagkaroon ng problema sa kanila, sa ugali nila. Lahat sila, maayos kasama. Nakakatuwa. Walang laglagan. Tulungan ganon. Hay nakakamiss naman sila. Hehe.
So yeah.. that's it.

Are You Required To Have Transport Tags When Shipping A Vehicle In The US?
Tumblr media
Transport tags, also called temporary tags or transit plates, are temporary license plates used when a vehicle needs to be driven from one place to another but doesn’t have permanent registration yet. These tags are usually valid for a limited period, such as 30 to 90 days, giving the owner or transporter time to complete registration with the appropriate Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They help law enforcement identify that the vehicle is legally in transit and not abandoned or stolen.
When Are Transport Tags Required?
Whether or not you need transport tags depends on how you plan to ship your car and the route it will take. Let’s look at the most common scenarios.
Driving the Vehicle Yourself or Using a Driver
If you, a friend, or a hired driver will drive the car to its destination, the vehicle must have a valid license plate. If it’s a newly purchased car that hasn’t been registered, you’ll need to get transport tags. Without them, driving the car on public roads can result in fines or impoundment by police.
Each state has its own rules for issuing transport tags. In some states, like Florida and California, you can get them from the DMV on the same day for a small fee, typically around $5 to $30.
Shipping a Vehicle on a Car Transport Truck
If your car is being shipped on a car transport truck, transport tags are usually not required. This is because the vehicle won’t be driven on public roads—it will stay on the truck throughout the journey. The trucking company takes responsibility for moving the vehicle safely, and the law typically does not require unregistered vehicles to have tags while in transit.
Car transport trucks are regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and must follow strict safety and licensing rules. The trucks are required to carry insurance, valid permits, and registration, but the vehicles they transport do not need additional tags.
Why Carriers Don’t Usually Require Transport Tags
Shipping companies prefer that customers provide registered vehicles, but it’s not mandatory in most cases. Here are a few reasons why:
Vehicles Are Not Operated on Public Roads. Since the car is loaded directly onto the transport truck and driven only on private property, it doesn’t need a license plate or transport tags.
Insurance Coverage Is Provided. The trucking company’s insurance policy usually covers damage or accidents during the trip, so a lack of tags does not increase liability.
Out-of-Service Cars Are Common. Some vehicles being shipped are inoperable or intended for repair, meaning they often lack proper registration or working plates.
It’s still good practice to let the transport company know if the vehicle is unregistered. Some companies may have specific procedures for unregistered cars, such as extra paperwork or additional fees.
Situations Where Transport Tags Might Be Needed for Shipping
While most car transport trucks don’t require tags, there are some exceptions where transport tags may be necessary:
Terminal-to-Terminal Shipping:
If you are responsible for dropping off or picking up the car from a shipping terminal, transport tags might be needed to legally drive the vehicle between the terminal and your home or the DMV.
International Shipments:
Some shipping companies require transport tags if the vehicle will be driven across borders before being loaded onto a truck or ship. This is especially true for international shipments involving Canada or Mexico.
State-Specific Rules:
Although it’s uncommon, some states might have special laws requiring transport tags if the vehicle’s final destination is within their jurisdiction. It’s always good to double-check with the carrier to avoid any surprises.
Key Statistics on Car Shipping in the US
15 million vehicles are shipped annually in the US, according to industry reports.
Most people spend $700 to $1,200 to ship a vehicle across the country, with costs varying by distance, route, and vehicle size.
Around 40% of car shipments involve vehicles that are inoperable or don’t have current registration.
The busiest months for car transport are May through September, as many people move during the summer.
How to Prepare for Vehicle Shipping
Even though transport tags are not typically required when using a car transport truck, there are still steps you can take to ensure a smooth shipping process:
Inspect Your Vehicle: Document any existing scratches or dents and take photos. This will help you if you need to file an insurance claim.
Remove Personal Items: Most carriers do not allow personal belongings inside the car during shipping for safety and insurance reasons.
Disable Alarms: If your car has an alarm system, make sure it’s turned off to avoid disruptions during transport.
Communicate with the Carrier: Inform the shipping company if the vehicle is inoperable or unregistered, so they can prepare accordingly.
In most cases, transport tags are not required when shipping a vehicle on a car transport truck. These tags are only necessary if the car will be driven on public roads before or after shipping, such as during a drop-off or pick-up from a terminal. Carriers typically handle unregistered vehicles without issue, but it’s always wise to ask your shipping company about their specific policies.

Can I get a driving license on a tourist visa in Ontario?
In Ontario, it is generally not possible to obtain a full driving license on a tourist visa, as the Ontario Ministry of Transportation typically requires proof of residency in the province. However, as a tourist, you have a few options for driving legally in Ontario.
1. Driving with an International Driver’s Permit (IDP)
If you hold a valid driver’s license from your home country, you can drive in Ontario for up to 90 days using an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) along with your foreign driver’s license.
The IDP must be obtained in your home country before you arrive in Canada. It is a translation of your current license and is not a replacement for it.
2. Using Your Foreign Driver’s License
Visitors from certain countries may drive with their foreign driver’s license for up to 90 days without needing an IDP. However, it is highly recommended to have an IDP for convenience and to avoid any language barriers.
3. Applying for an Ontario Driver’s License
To apply for an Ontario driver’s license, you typically need to be a resident of Ontario, which means having a valid status other than a tourist visa, such as a work permit, student visa, or permanent residency.
You would need to provide proof of residency, legal status, and identity documents, which a tourist visa does not usually fulfill.
4. Temporary Licensing Exceptions
In some exceptional cases, long-term visitors on visas other than a tourist visa, such as long-term work or study permits, may qualify for a temporary license after meeting Ontario’s licensing requirements, including written and road tests.
Key Points:
Tourists cannot obtain a full Ontario driver’s license unless they change their status to one that allows residency.
Always carry your IDP and your foreign driver’s license while driving as a tourist.
Check specific requirements or any reciprocal agreements Ontario might have with your home country, as these can sometimes influence your eligibility to drive.
It's always best to check directly with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation or visit their official website for the most current and specific requirements related to driving as a visitor in Ontario.

How to Develop Safety Protocols When Starting a Trucking Company in Canada
Starting a trucking company in Canada can be a lucrative venture, but it comes with its share of responsibilities. One of the most critical aspects is ensuring the safety of your drivers, cargo, and the general public. Developing robust safety protocols is not just a regulatory requirement but also a crucial factor in building a sustainable business. In this blog, we’ll explore how to develop effective safety protocols when starting a trucking company in Canada.
Understand the Regulatory Framework
Before you develop safety protocols, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the Canadian regulations governing the trucking industry. The National Safety Code (NSC) provides guidelines that trucking companies must follow to ensure safety on the roads. This code outlines requirements related to vehicle maintenance, driver qualifications, hours of service, and accident reporting.
Key Regulations to Consider:
Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure that all trucks are regularly maintained and inspected to prevent breakdowns and accidents.
Driver Qualification: Drivers should possess a valid Class 1 commercial driver’s license and undergo training that covers safety practices.
Hours of Service: Familiarize yourself with the regulations regarding driving hours and rest periods to prevent fatigue-related accidents.
Understanding these regulations is the first step in creating safety protocols that comply with national standards.
Conduct a Risk Assessment
A comprehensive risk assessment will help you identify potential hazards that your trucking company may face. This process involves evaluating various factors, including:
Road Conditions: Analyze the routes your trucks will take and identify any potential hazards, such as construction zones, poorly maintained roads, or adverse weather conditions.
Vehicle Conditions: Assess the mechanical condition of your fleet to determine if they are safe for operation.
Driver Behavior: Monitor driving patterns and behaviors, including speed, adherence to traffic laws, and overall driving habits.
By identifying these risks, you can create targeted safety protocols that address the specific challenges your trucking company will encounter.
Develop Clear Safety Protocols
Once you have a solid understanding of regulations and potential risks, it's time to develop clear safety protocols. Here are some critical elements to include:
. Pre-Trip Inspections
Implement a mandatory pre-trip inspection checklist for drivers to complete before embarking on any journey. This checklist should include checks for:
Tire pressure and condition
Fluid levels (oil, coolant, etc.)
Brake functionality
Lights and signals
. Driver Training Programs
Establish comprehensive training programs that cover safe driving practices, emergency response, and proper loading techniques. Training should be ongoing and include periodic refreshers to ensure that all drivers stay updated on safety practices.
. Incident Reporting Procedures
Create a clear incident reporting procedure that outlines how drivers should report accidents, near misses, or safety violations. This protocol should include:
Steps to take immediately after an incident
Documentation required for reporting
Procedures for internal reviews of incidents
. Safety Meetings
Schedule regular safety meetings to discuss protocols, share updates, and address any safety concerns that drivers may have. These meetings encourage open communication and foster a culture of safety within your company.
Invest in Technology
Leveraging technology can significantly enhance your safety protocols. Here are a few technological tools to consider:
GPS Tracking Systems: Implement GPS tracking to monitor driver behavior, route efficiency, and vehicle location.
Dash Cameras: Installing dash cameras can provide valuable footage in the event of an accident, helping to clarify circumstances and enhance accountability.
Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs): Use ELDs to ensure compliance with hours of service regulations and to monitor driving patterns in real-time.
Foster a Safety Culture
Creating a culture of safety within your trucking company is vital for long-term success. Encourage your drivers to prioritize safety by:
Recognizing and rewarding safe driving behaviors
Promoting open dialogue about safety concerns
Involving drivers in the development and review of safety protocols
Developing safety protocols when starting a trucking company in Canada is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of your operations and compliance with regulations. By understanding the regulatory framework, conducting risk assessments, and implementing clear safety protocols, you can create a safe working environment for your drivers and the public. Investing in technology and fostering a culture of safety will further enhance your efforts.
As you embark on this journey, remember that the commitment to safety not only protects lives but also builds a reputable trucking business. For more guidance on safety protocols, you can turn to eldmandate to assist you in ensuring compliance and safety when starting a trucking company in Canada.
