Prompt, eh? Hmm, perhaps try a monologue from a character's perspective as they come to the horrible realization that are falling deeper and deeper in love. Bonus points if it starts over something as simple as thinking the individual has a cute sneeze.
So my first thought was âoh Ghidorahâ but then I was like âbut Iâve basically already done that with Ghidorah in the form of arguing with themselves about Rodan, what other character that we both know could I do that withâ and then I was like âoh Gigan?â
And then I was like âwell obviously heâs gotta have somebody to be monologuing toâ and then it uh turned into a whole fic with a plot arc and a cliffhanger instead of a simple monologue, and also took me like seven hours to write instead of thirty minutes.
I havenât proofed it because itâs 5 a.m.! Enjoy!!!
###
The Fissures Between Flesh and Metal
###
âThe first time I saw them,â Gigan said, turned to take in both the bartender and the robot on the stool next to him, âtheyâd just stolen a million credit job out from under me.â
The bartender rapped the sharp tip of one tentacle against the bar disapprovingly, and the robot let out a low whistle.
âYeah,â Gigan said. âI was ready to kill them on the spot. The apocalyptic mercenary marketâs already crowded enoughâthereâs practically more people running around who can destroy planets than there are people who actually want a planet destroyed, you know? Iâll put up with professional rivalry, fine, but Iâm not gonna take this from some edgy new guys in town who donât have enough respect for their fellow professionals not to horn in on someone elseâs job. Gimme another hit?â
The robot obligingly picked up the battery that it and Gigan had been sharing and quickly pressed the terminals to the side of Giganâs metal beak. Electricity jolted straight into his brain. He tipped his head back, letting the rush wash through his circuits, his thoughts popping and static flashing in his optical band.
As the power boost sizzled out and he came back down, for a moment he saw a blurry golden shape with three heads and enormous wings. Then his vision cleared and it was gone.
Gigan shook his head. âBut as Iâm standing in a freshly-leveled village on this planet that shoulda been my job, watching these jerks who undercut me walk strut around and trying to decide the best angle to attack them from, one of them bends over and licks up this smear made out of one of the locals. The other two screw up their faces in disgust, the one that licked it is scraping his tongue off on a rock, the middle oneâs biting his horn in revengeâand then the head on the other side takes a taste too, and they do it all over again.â He threw back his head, squawking in laughter. The bartender rattled a couple of tentacles in amusement. The robot just shook its head.
âAnyway,â Gigan went on, âI figured then either they were too damn stupid to realize theyâd stolen someoneâs jobâheck, maybe they were just wild animals that had been dropped off to make a messâor, they were the most fun guys Iâd ever seen. So I let âem live.â
âDid you talk to them?â the robot asked. It wasnât looking at Gigan anymore; its optic was off. A dozen different open tabs in glowing squares and rectangles floated in front of the bot, projected from the computer plugged into its wrist. The robot groped around blindly for the battery and took another hit; the floating screens sizzled and wavered.
Gigan waited for the static to die down before he replied. âNah, not then. Had no idea what language to start with. I figured if they really were mercs and not someoneâs pet planet squashers, Iâd eventually run into them again somewhere like this.â
âThisâ being the bar around them: an illicit pop-up stop clinging precariously to the surface of an asteroid under a makeshift canopy tent, with a smattering of round tables and stools screwed directly into the asteroidâs surface and a bar made out of a row of coolers. Places like this were a dime a dozen in this arm of the galaxy, appearing in a matter of hours and disappearing just as fast, lasting anywhere from a week to five years. All you needed to make one was a force field to keep out nearby asteroids and to keep in enough air to prevent customersâ heads from poppingâbut providing gravity and breathable air was the customersâ responsibility. The bartender wore goggles and an air filter that snaked around her head to an air tank strapped between three larger tentacles; Gigan had enough internal air storage and a good enough filter in his throat that heâd be fine for hours as long as he didnât get in a fight. He kept his tail and one leg curled beneath his seat to keep himself from floating off it.
Bars like this were the best place to find odd jobs and the odd guys to do them: hired killers, hackers, thugs, dealers in contraband of all kind. Gigan couldnât count how many bars like this he and the triple threat had hung out inâeither because theyâd run into each other there between jobs, or because theyâd come together.
âWe crossed paths a lotta times over the next, uhâŚâ he waved a scythe vaguely, âdunno. Few centuries, I guess? Itâs hard to keep track of standard galactic time when you spend all your time bouncing between different planets with different year lengths. Sometimes we got hired by two different employers to hit the same worldâI usually, y'know, got hired as muscle to extort a ransom, but the only jobs they ever did were full mass extinctions. I got to see them in actionâwow. Theyâre a moving force of nature. On the right planetsâwet ones, mainlyâthey create storms hundreds of miles across just by flying.â To the bartender, he said, âYouâre from an aquatic world, right? You look like it.â
Rapping on the makeshift bar top with the tips of half a dozen tentacles, the bartender said, âMy ancestral world? Mostly aquatic. About four fifths of the planet, Iâm told.â
âYeah, theyâd tear your planet to shreds.â He didnât have enough appendages to speak the bartenderâs percussive language properlyâlike the robot, he was speaking it by synthesizing the right raps and taps through his speakerâbut he added a scrape with one scythe on the bar top to underscore the sentiment.
She shrugged.
"Fought them a few times, too,â Gigan said. âTheyâre vicious in close combat. It's kill or be killed, no in between. Iâd usually have to cut and run, heh, just take the financial hit, cuz thereâs no beating them without getting damaged so bad the victory isnât worth it. Theyâre probably the best warriors Iâve ever met, but the worst mercenaries to share a market with.â
He thought his tone was admiring, but the robot said, âI thought you got along with each other?â
âWe did,â Gigan insisted, and immediately corrected himself, âWe do. It just took a while to get properly introduced to each other, you know? Every time I met them, they were in the middle of a jobâand they had that whole... intense, mysterious, aloof loner schtick going on. For the longest time, I didnât even know whether they could talk.â He hooked one of his wrist spurs through the handle of his drink, took a sip through the strawâhated straws, but a lid with a straw was the cheapest way to keep a drink from floating out of a mug and bars like this were nothing if not cheapâand grimaced. Either his drink had gone off in the past five minutes or that battery was messing with his taste buds. Probably the latter. "When we finally met each other properly, it was inâyou know that cruddy little strip of solar systems that ended up under no oneâs jurisdiction after the 'Rog turf war? Buncha little lawless hellholes?â
The bartender said, "My ancestral home world was in that strip.â
âSucks,â Gigan said. âHope it wasnât one of the ones the 'Rogs asked me to clear out. Anyway, I crossed paths with them in one of the space port cities near the edge of the contested territory. Theyâd gotten in a bar fight. And lost.â
Theyâd been thrown across the bar onto their back, legs kicking uselessly in the air, hissing and spitting in the worst Suneri that Gigan had ever heard. Someone had been mad at them because theyâd finished the job theyâd been hired for even after they'd been told the world had paid the ransom their employer had demanded; they were mad that theyâd been ordered to stop when theyâd said from the start that wasnât how they worked. They were twice the height of anyone else in the bar besides Gigan; but they were fighting completely nakedâweaponless and defenselessâand consequently got their tails handed to them.
Heâd learned a little bit more about them by then. Over past few centuries, heâd asked around about a three-headed, golden, scaled, winged warrior that spat lightning. He'd eventually stumbled on some sparse info about the prize weapons of a conquering empire in some far-flung corner of the galaxy, a race rather like the local Garogas. Their three-headed warriors were some sort of genetically engineered killing machines.
So was Gigan.
The warriors heâd seen were very, very far from their home.
So was Gigan.
Over time, he'd found enough info on the empire to download its dominant speciesâ language, so when heâd crossed paths with the warriors again and confirmed that they could, in fact, speakâ
âI offered to buy them drinks.â In their home worldâs language. âAnd they kicked me in the chest.â He laughed.
It was his fault. He shouldâve known that anyone whoâd flown that far to get away from their masters wouldnât wanna hear a stranger speaking their mastersâ language. Would Gigan have?
âAnd this is when you started making friends?â the bartender asked dubiously.
âSure! It was the first time they didnât try to kill me,â Gigan said. âAnd they did let me buy them that drink. They were flat broke. Get thisâthis is why I kept running into them everywhereâthey were snapping up half the jobs on the market because they were doing them for free.â
The robot made a painful-sounding buzz low in its abdomen that Gigan took for a laugh.
âYeah! Yeah. Remember what I said about that edgy loner schtick of theirs?â He drummed emphatically on the bar top. âThey just wanted to watch worlds burn. No money. No rewards. They didnât turn down anyone stupid enough to hire them, but they donât take any orders, either. Get what you pay for, huh?â
âWhat is their name?â the robot asked.
Giganâs good cheer immediately disappeared. âThey donât have one,â he said sharply.
âOf course they do.â
âNo, they said they donât. They werenât given one. They wanna be nameless, Iâll respect that.â
âI am in the Xiliensâ military personnel database.â
Gigan leaned over, trying to see the screens from the robotâs angle. âYeah? Youâve got a connection to their empire from here?â
âA really slow one,â the robot shot back, âpatched into the network via a Xilien spy two star systems away who is connected to the home world with the worst ansible I have ever had the displeasure of interfacing with, so I would like to spend as little time doing unnecessary searches as possible. It looks like they have got hundreds of files on three-headed monsters like your buddies. Once I have cracked the security encryption on them, I do not want to open them one by one.â
For a moment, Gigan was silent. Then he said, âThey said their home world didnât name themâit numbered them.â
âSympathies,â the robot said. âI have still got a bar code on my ass with my factory serial number. Do you know theirs?â
âHe said theyâre Zero.â He felt like a traitor. They'd only trusted him with that information because they'd believed him when he swore that he'd never call them by their homeworld's labelâand certainly that he'd never tell anyone else.
The robot froze momentarily, processing that. âEasy to remember.â One of the screens changed as the robot started searching.
âJust one 'heâ now?â the bartender asked. âYou were talking about all three together earlier.â
âYeah, uh, he as inâas in the one on the left,â Gigan said. He didn't think of the information as coming from them, but from himâthe one who'd persuaded the other two to share it, the one who'd leaned in to whisper it to him in the dark while the other two watched for eavesdroppers. âYouâve got lefty, righty, and front-and-center. Totally different people. Leftyâs⌠probably my favorite. I like them all about the same, but heâmakes himself easiest to like, you know? Great sense of humorâthe murderous kindâthe kind of guy that can find anything entertaining. From explosions to head wounds. Thatâs rare.â
Although sometimes Gigan had gotten the impression that, on some level, lefty was forcing himself to feel entertained. The more Gigan got to know him, to see under the aloof façade they all put on, the more he got the sense that lefty had this... desperate fragility about him, like he was crumbling apart and looking for something to latch ontoâa weird taste or a unique view or a good fightâsomething to hold him together.
All three of them gave off that impression, truth be told, just in different ways. Righty looked for stability in his other two heads, ever turned inward, to the point he was all but oblivious to life outside of them. Front-and-center held himself together through sheer force of will, and held back anything from getting close enough to touch him and break him apart.
They were all three so very brittle. They had fissures deep in their body and minds, fissures traced along the paths of the invisible scars where theyâd been stitched together into a three-headed monster. And whenever Gigan glimpsed that brittlenessâwhenever they withdrew into themselves at a question about their past, whenever they tried to pretend they werenât nervous around employers who paraded about mind-controlled thralls, whenever they hesitated in front of a door that said âNo Petsâ like they didnât think they qualified as people instead of animalsâhe felt the fissures between his flesh and his metal, too.
He didnât like to talk about his fissures. But they liked to talk about theirs even less, so it all worked out neatlyâexcept that, sometimes, he wished he could talk to them about how he kept his from cracking open, in hopes that it could help them too. He hated their brittleness. He hated how it hurt them.
âBut theyâre all fun,â he said. âFighting them especially, once you get them to a place where theyâre trying to beat you instead of kill you. They donât mind losing a few body parts, evenâthey just regrow them. I even saw them regrow front-and-centerâs whole head, once. I didnât take him off, just saw it happen. Fighting alongside them, thoughâsometimes we'd get hired for jobs togetherâwatching the way they can work a hurricane, wowâŚâ To think that they didnât think they were people. Had they never heard themselves sing before? Had they never seen the way they danced through clouds and lightning? Had they never noticed how they effortlessly conducted both rain and minds alike like they were symphonies? Didnât they know that they were maestros in the sky? Their sheer visionary genius, their unsurpassed grace, the beauty of golden scales gyrating through the cloudless eye of a stormâŚ
âHit me again,â he asked the robot, and he wasnât sure whether it was in hopes of pushing the images out of his RAM or in hopes of summoning up another hallucinatory vision of them. The robot flicked on its optic long enough to pick up the battery and lean over.
When Gigan came back down, the robot said, âI am not finding any monsters named Zero. Have you got another name?â
âNoâwhat do you mean 'namedâ? They donât have names besides numbers, do they?â
âThey do. The Xiliens gave them all code names. They are things like 'Deathâ and 'Hyperâ and 'Kaiser.ââ
Gigan shouldnât have been surprised that theyâd lied about their name, after everything else. But he was. And it hurt. âWellâkeep looking. Youâve got the picture I sent you, right?â
âI will have to look through every file individually to find a visual match.â
âIâm paying you for your time, arenât I? Come on.â
The robot made an irritated buzzing noise, but snapped, âFine.â
âWhy do you have to track them down anyway?â the bartender asked. âIf youâre so close.â
Gigan shrugged. âThey went and disappeared on me ages ago. Iâm just trying to figure out where they went. I figured their home world might be looking for their lost planet-flatteners, soâŚâ Although theyâd never said so, heâd always got the sense that they were terrified of their home worldâand terrified that they were being followed. Not the vague paranoia that any escaped weapon felt, but like they knew.
âSo whyâd they take off? You have a fight?â
âNo. We didnât. In fact, the last time we spoke wasâwas the opposite of a fight.â
The last time they spoke, Gigan had asked them to come with him. For good. He thought they should market themselves as a package apocalyptic deal, let Gigan handle finessing the employers and victims while the triple threat handled the razing. Give the three of them the opportunity to experience the cushy things you can only get when youâre getting paid for your jobsâfine dining, luxury hotels, resort planetsâbecause they deserved those things all the time, not just when they happened to cross paths with Gigan between jobs. Take them to symphonies and operasâhe heard them singing, constantly, any time things were still and they thought no one was listening, in languages heâd never learned. Travel the galaxy together. Get as far away from their pasts as they could.
They said theyâd think about it.
Heâd never seen them again.
He snatched up his drink and irritably stirred the straw, trying to suck up the last drops floating around inside. He slammed the mug back down. "Just trying to see if they tripped and fell in a black hole or something,â he muttered. "Get me another. Less blood this time, it tastes funky.â The bartender took back the empty mug and opened one of the coolers.
The robot turned on its optic. âI think we have a match,â it said. Gigan immediately leaned over, squinting at the screens. Something in him sparked and simmered when he saw the photo. That was themâfar younger, with a near-feral bloodthirst in their eyes that heâd only ever seen when they were fighting for their lives.
âThe Xiliens have a database of AWOL monsters where they document their efforts to track them down. It was a lot faster to go through than all the files,â the robot said. âYou were rightâthey are numbered, and they were assigned zero. I believe your friends were the prototype for the others.â It pointed at small text at the top of their file, Monster #0, and then dragged its finger down to the far larger text underneath: KING. âThat is their name.â
Gigan wondered why they would rather claim theyâd been named âZeroâ than âKing.â They deserved to be called King. âWell? Whatâs it say? Do they know where they are?â
The robot pulled up a map of the galaxy. It showed a cone stretching away from their general neighborhoodâlike the maps that came from trying to predict the path of a hurricane crossing an ocean. It curved counterclockwise in an arc, a little more than half the galaxyâs radius out from the supermassive black hole. The path was thousands of lightyears long and, at its widest point, hundreds across.
âThey found faint psychic traces of Kingâs interstellar path almost a hundred thousand years ago heading roughly along that arc, assuming they continued on the same trajectory,â the robot said. âBut that is the most recent data the Xiliens have.â
âItâll do,â Gigan said. At least it was a starting point. Even if theyâd long moved on, Gigan might be able to pick up the trail again if he knew where theyâd been. âWhat are these 'psychic tracesâ the Xiliens are tracking? Any way I can track that too?â
âI can look it up, but it will cost you more.â
âYeah yeah yeah. Thatâs fine.â
âHold on,â the bartender said, setting down Giganâs new drink. âA hundred thousand years ago? Youâre looking for someone who disappeared a hundred thousand years ago?â
Gigan winced. âTechnically, no. It wasâlonger than that, actually.â
âHow long ago?â
Gigan opened his mouth. And stuck the straw in it so he wouldnât have to answer.
The bartender tapped out disapproval on the bar top. âThey could be anywhere in the galaxy by now.â
âYeah, if they had any idea how to hitch rides,â Gigan said. âThey fly everywhere. With their own wings. They spend long flights inside these things.â He stamped a hooked foot on the asteroid. âAnd I donât mean a ship disguised to look like an asteroid, they travel in rocks!â
âThis is gross,â the robot said. âOrganic brains are gross. But here. I got the unique psychic frequency that the Xiliens are using to track King and blueprints to a machine to do it with. I do not know if they are good blueprints. I refuse to think about brains any more than that.â
âItâll do. Beam it over.â
The robot mentally transferred over its exorbitant invoice. The instant Gigan transferred payment, it followed up with the files. âPleasure,â it said, unplugging from its computer and beginning to pack up. It pointed at the battery. âDo you want more?â
âKeep the rest. Consider it a tip.â
âNice.â It carefully wrapped the battery in a napkin and stowed it with the computer.
Gigan sucked down the rest of his drink, pulled some physical cash out of a compartment in his calf, and slapped it down on the bar.
The bartender put a tentacle over the money and carefully slid it to the edge of the bar so it wouldn't float away. Several taps dragging out into wry scrapes, she said, "Must be a more impressive lay than they look like.â
If Gigan hadnât already finished his drink, he would have choked. "We neverâ! I meanâwe'reâcolleagues. Colleague-friend-âŚmercenaries.â He shifted the leg he had anchored around the bar stool uncomfortably. âDoes it... seem like something else?â
Several tentacles rippled in a shrug. âI donât know anything about your species,â she said. âBut in most, no one spends that kind of money, obsesses that amount of time, and crosses that amount of space unless it's for an offspring, a hive mind hub, a nearly-extinct food source, or a mate of some kind.â
Gigan turned that over. In his head, he called up the photo in the file that the robot had sent him. They were so young, so furious, so bestialâso much more broken than they had been even when Gigan knew them. It was a damn pity that the Xiliens kept visual instead of audial files. He wondered if they had sang back then, too.
âHonestly?â he said. âI donât know much about my species, either.â
His flesh felt icy and his metal felt numb during the few seconds after exiting the barâs force field as he crossed the asteroid to where heâd parked his junk heap of a ship. He was warm again by the time heâd powered it up and gotten off the rock. He turned toward the nearest proper spaceport that accommodated people of his size and profession. He had a very long search ahead of him, and he had no idea when he was next going to cross paths with a proper spacefaring planet. He had to stock up on supplies.
He needed to buy a ship that wasnât falling apart, too. Something built for deep space exploration.
Careful not to cut it, he peeled the one picture he had of the triple threat off of his windshield and stowed it in his calf compartment, to transfer to his new ship later.

From the Tabletop #1
In recent times, I've been trying to get more into one of my favorite hobbies: tabletop games. Primarily D&D (of course), Exalted, and Shadowrun. Actually, some friends and I have been running an Exalted game for over 2 years now (since 3rd edition dropped) and I wanted to share with the world some of our fun stories and "That Guy" moments we've had forced upon us as well. Going back to the very beginning, I was, unfortunately, "That Guy" of our initial 3rd Edition Exalts. I built a strong, competent battle-ready Solar Exalt built around the Righteous Devil martial arts which, for those who may not be familiar, is essentially flamethrower-fu. Her name was Sunset Shimmer (yes, I snuck an MLP joke into an Exalted game, and only one other player at the table was in on the gag). The biggest issue with Sunset was a general lack of direction of the character. She had a backstory but no real goal to speak of and it didn't help that meatspace conditions made my attention to her spotty at best. She was an active participant, and I had freakishly lucky rolls playing her, but she was just kind of boring. I really should remake her. It really didn't help that I was the "That Guy" of a party of "That Guys". Another in the group was Hrothgar, whose defining intimacy was Ultra-Violence. But another major intimacy was about what a nice guy this bloodthirsty faux-viking was. It made about as much sense in context as it sounds here. Not helped by not really having a backstory or a goal to speak of. Ditto for Drago, affectionately nicknamed "Ivan Drago", also lacked any characterization to speak of. He was the man of 1000 backstories, because he couldn't settle on one. Once from the 100 Kingdoms, then a peninsula, then an island, then about how much of a great pirate his grandfather was. The GM eventually demanded he put up or shut up, essentially fusing together all the ideas, mostly because we never brought it up again and never actually went to his homeland in that game, but would in later ones. Whereupon we set it on fire (more on that later). The only competent Exalt of the circle was Petral. Sol Invictus knows she tried. Essentially Samurai BatMan, complete with high levels of investigation (she never used) and murdering people (that she really should've left alive), the only really meaningful connection this circle managed was that Targon and Drago's players shipped Sunset and Petral, due to a moment where a badly-drunken Petral, while worshipping the porcelain god, was comforted by a sympathetic Sunset. I'll be honest, as I was a frequent truant at these games, I can't accurately account for the flow of the game, but it did lead to moments wherein I'd find myself saying things like "But last time we agreed to murder some nobles! Why are we 200 miles away from them now?!" or declaring that a large, squid-like creature was, in fact, an aquatic horse upon botching an intelligence check. Things at least became more consistent with our second round of characters. Unfortunately, it was consistently God-awful. We had a cult leader, Zen, who barely had any idea why an Exalt would have a cult. He also didn't know what it would take to run one, having a character with zero personality to speak (I frequently confuse him with the next character here because of this), and - quite frankly - acted extremely evil at times. He had terrible conditions for his cult, food was constantly scarce (not helped by our being in Malfaes for this entire game), and draconian laws oftentimes seen in actual real-world deathcults. Calling this character "incompetent" is kind of like calling the ocean "a bit wet". The second one, Targon... ho boy. His backstory pegged him as an arena gladiator, which is fine on its face. The problems cropped up after that, whereupon he was also a successful businessman (resources 5), owned a chain restaurant which he managed himself (despite claiming to have locations all over creation!), and demanded his demonic clients pay in artifacts of all things. Now, in Malfeas, this could work, as a single-location eccentric establishment that catered to the super-rich. But this is Targon. And he ran it like a Pondarosa Steakhouse, except less competent. He would spend 20-minute long scenes (real time), in how exactly he would cook and prepare food. This established a precedent wherein we realized this player just absolutely would not accept flaws of any kind of his character - not real flaws at any rate. Just the informed "type variety" - his words. And, yes, he always attempted to sound smarter than he actually is by speaking in a roundabout and obfuscatory manner. Next was Taiga, and Taiga was a great character. She became the team mascot, punch-monkey, and little sister all in one. There was literally no one who didn't like her, in terms of player characters, because she was cheerful and cute as a button. She won big in Hell's many arenas and even won herself a few Pokemo-- err-- I mean, pet beasties. Her main concern was patrolling the mean streets of Hell, forming her own police squad - the Justice Buddies. And last, but not least, was my new character, Master of the Eternal Golden Paradise, named from the Exalted Name Generator, in case that weren't obvious. Master was a shrewd businessman (resources 3 to start), who operated as a flashy, guild liaison with some business contacts that helped him ultimately build a theme park in Hell - Super Happy Fun Land. He sort-of adopted Taiga as a little sister, and would go on to help her undermine Zen's cult leadership status, whereupon they would form "Taiga-ism", a rather loose set of morals and ethics as Master devised ways of educating the unwashed masses to make them more productive members of the work force and economy. As I recall, the greatest among these religious prohibitions was against taxadermy - as Taiga kind of thought it was gross. To really drive his themes home, Master as decked out in heavy artifact weapon and armor - his weapon (a reskinned Great Goremaul) was an abicus named "SmithLocke & Keynes" and his armor was a heavy platemail named the "God-Dragon Plate" (or GDP). Among the bizarre things this team did included: Operation Eats & Poops, an attempt to save Zen's hopeless cult by fertilizing fields. This almost got derailed due to a severe drought, but Master had two harthstones that happened to solve the problem. (This itself became an issue later on, due to fukken Zen not signing the proper paperwork while taking up space in the Endless Desert. Master would then go on to petition Cecylene for use of the space, and did so with such an amazing bureacracy roll, that he, and I'm quoting my GM here, "Made the Endless Desert moist".) Zen then begged Taiga into assisting him in getting a magic book - not even getting into his begging for magical martial arts training he ultimately bitched out of (thereby humiliating Taiga in front of her master). This was kind of like trying to explain color to a blind person, because Zen's answer to Taiga's taking him to a book store, was to casually saunter up and begin asking for what amounts to black market wares in the middle of the day. The GM, God bless him, took pity on this faux-pas and Taiga was eventually able to get said book. Not that Zen put it to any meaningful use. Apparently, the 17 year old girl understood the black market better than the man in his 30s. The team would go on to battle many times in the arena, sans Master, who was on the sidelines betting on his comrades's success (when it was Taiga) or their failure (when it was Zen and Targon). Strangely enough, Master's bets were almost always right. At one point we even battled what was essentially a battlemech. The team managed to topple it despite even man-down at the time, and Master sealed it with a linguistics charm essentially reading "DON'T TOUCH. THIS MEANS YOU, ZEN." And the sin that I shall never be forgiven for was Master's casual investment in the entertainment/security measure known as the TaigaBot. These mechanical abominations were fully able to dance, sing, answer simple questions for guests and beat the shit out of anyone who attempted anything funny, be it stealing or attempting to couple with a TaigaBot. Endless innuendos were made, of course, and that's part of the reason I shan't be forgiven for this. Master briefly considered a ZenBot or a TargonBot, but we all know where that would've ended up. Those robots would've killed themselves somehow - likely out of shame for their source material. And the last bit, something Taiga's player really should've reconsidered, was during a battle atop a giant bird-behemoth (Master was absent from this fight), Taiga's Mouse of the Sun, a rather vicious fighter named Fluff Mousington, brandished an anti-warstrider rifle and leveled it on Zen, prompting her for an answer. Taiga relented (her player, less so) and admitted that they should save Zen, causing a battle against a gigantic eagle. In retrospect, probably should've just pulled the trigger. Remember everyone: backstory, intimacies, long-term goal. Not negotiable. So, join me next time as I discuss some D&D (and how I became a half-ork pop star) and a later Exalted campaign involving slutty pirates, a reincarnating old man knight (who happens to be a teenaged girl), and three boneheads no one likes. See you there.

Finders Keepers ch5 Sneak Peek
It was an unspoken fact that history was written by its victors and its sufferers. It culminates in a selective retelling of events that is passed down via the education systems located throughout the galaxies.
During the time of the Last Corporate Warâwith the survivors being Anshin, Atlas, Dahl, Hyperion, Jakobs, Maliwan, Pangolin, S&S Munitions, Tediore, Vladof, and other megacorporationsâonly one emerged to stand at the forefront of innovation. With the fortunate excavation on the planet Promethea, Atlas Corporation had reverse-engineered the alien Eridian technology to give themselves an edge over their competitors.
With the discovery came a new line of machines, starships, and weaponry that were to be manufactured, as well as the earlier prototypes of the digistruct technology. Eventually all that led to the colonization of the planet Pandora and a monopoly of the interplanetary scale, allowing Atlas control over a significant portion of the market for goods and services. Their success had spurred on other megacorporations to explore other frontier planets in search of more alien technology and similar resources.
Yet of the numerous planets that made up the solar system, only a few of them were well-known intergalactically.
Many knew Aquator to be a scenic tourist hotspot with its many small islands to vacation on.
Athenas was known to be a planet governed by the Order of the Impending Stormâa religious monastic sect whose influence reached all aspects of their civilization.
Dionysus was a party planet, known for visitorsâ drunken escapees and the tourist tagline âwhat happens in Dionysus, stays in Dionysus.â
Hermes was a planet with a thin atmosphere that was rich in helium, orbiting around a giant blue star instead of the sun.
Pandora was one of the frontier planets, recently colonized by Atlasâand other megacorporations like Dahl and Hyperionâas a research test site and as a settlement.
The last was Promethea, an environment of harsh extraterrestrial living conditions because of the excessive mining, rapid industrialization, martial law, and the like.
Planets like Artemis, Demophon, Eden-5, Eden-6, Eden-7, Epitah, Eunomia, Grophic IV, Hephaestus, Hera, Hestias, Hieronymous, Honus 4651, Isolus, Menoetius, Tantalus, Themis, and Thrace had their own reputations, but they were universally regarded to be on the same respectable level as the old planetary system.
Modeled after Earth, all of the Edens founded were known to be settlements of research, boasting of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism. Only the brightestâor the wealthyâwere allowed citizenship or temporary student visas, to learn at the competing prestigious institutions and to increase their prospects of being hired by a megacorporation. Largely peaceful, the citizens of these planets were accustomed to a life of high-tech luxuries.
And unlike Eden-5 whose reputation was overshadowed by their corrupt police force, Eden-7 had some of the largest university financial endowments which allowed for many resources for their academic programs and research endeavors.
Bordering the main hub of the city was a tall building. Not quite a skyscraper, the architecture resembled that of an industrial hangar that had been elongated to touch the skies.
Pulling into the nearest available parking spot, a well-dressed long-limbed man emerged from a black vehicle. His hair seemed to have a burnished bronze luster from the sun.
Smoothing out the nonexistent wrinkles in his suit and anxiously adjusting his tie, he walked around to the passenger side to retrieve a clunky robotic prototype. Pressing the ON/OFF button, he waited for it to finish activation.
Snatching the laptop briefcase in the meanwhile, he murmured to the floating device, âAlright, itâs our moment to shine, Dumpy.â Closing the door with a nudge of his hip, he pocketed the key fob after hearing the car beep. âWe got this in the bag.â He smacked the briefcase. âConfidence is the key.â
A deep, synthetic baritoneâthe voice package belonged to the deceased actor James Earl Jonesâreplied in the affirmative.
Deliberately tilting his chin up, Rhys left the parking with Dumpy whirring in the air quietly beside him. Not once did he allow himself to look down at his feet or to avoid eye contact.
At this time, even with the employees retiring for the night, it seemed the world was at its usual and undisturbed.
The uniforms that Atlas personnel wore was a curious mix of business and military dress code, which was what distinguished one from the other. Red accents were intermingled in a mostly dark or neutral color palette.
Cyborgsâhumans having undergone cybernetic enhancement surgery such as bionic limbs or microchip implantsâand androids were virtually indistinguishable. A usual sight, they shambled along with the rest of the unaugmented humans.
Soon, Rhys spotted an interesting individual among the crowd that wound around a giant statue. The first thought that came to his head was the word âwhite;â her hair and skin were bleached of all color, like a ghost.
The woman was dressed in a furred-collar military vest worn over a black T- shirt that exposed her midriff. Leather trousers hugged her figure, as well as her knee-high boots. Even as she marched her back was ramrod-straight, like a sword forged of steel. Likely due to the leather material of the long opera-length gloves she wore, they reminded Rhys of the black rubber gloves that a butcher would use instead of a fashionable evening accessory.
There was even a large Bowie knife strapped to the belt and a gun holster. Since the sight of her didnât cause anyone alarm, he could only assume that she was authorized to carry weapons in plain sight.
She drew several stares from passersby, which Rhys suspected wasnât only for her distinguishing features.
He narrowed his eyes. There was the smallest sense of recognition, although it escaped his memory of how and where he has seen her before. As they traveled, the waning sun could be seen through the openings placed strategically throughout the compound. A gradience of crimsons, oranges, and golds was suffused over the rigid gunmetal grays.
The building was once a product of its timesâan outdated corporate steel-and-glass facadeâbefore the property on the real estate market had been purchased by the CEO. During the initial remodeling phase, the exposed foundation and rusted structure made it appear like a skeleton with its flesh peeled off.
The soles of his shoes were clacking against the industrial-sized plates as Rhys craned his neck, spotting the Atlas logo affixed overhead. Neon yellow LED tubing was installed throughout the architecture.
The crowd had thinned at the entrance, where the woman was headed toward. By this time, the premises was mostly deserted.
That illusion of calm was shattered when the woman jerked to a sudden halt.
A split second later, she evaded the gunshots by pitching her body into a barrel roll. Scorched dents were left in the metal where she once stood.
Slamming her hand and feet onto the ground, the woman regained balance. She had already been in mid-motion of reaching into her holster, but she froze up at the sight of the two guns trained on her.
A spear of ice pierced Rhys from the top of his head to the soles of his feet.
Hastily retreating a few steps back, he felt his back collide roughly against the pedestal of the Greek titan Atlas. Looming overhead, the statue was hoisting a massive sphere meant to represent Earth.
âDonât let them see you,â he hissed, snatching Dumpy from midair. Sweat was adhering his dress shirt to his skin. He leaned slightly forward, ignoring the simulated heavy breathing from the robotâs voice modulator. âLet me see what you see. Enhance.â
Much like a video recorder, Dumpy was recording the situation live. The zoom function allowed Rhys to see a close-up of the two armed assailants who had trodden forth. Theyâd worn nondescript clothing meant to blend in and catch their target off-guard. If it hadnât been for their faces, he wouldnât have been able to ascertain the gender from just their builds alone.
Rhys wasnât much of an expert on firearmsâhis knowledge of guns was limited to movies and video gamesâbut the make and model appeared vintage, likely contraband. Guns made on Earth were considered outdated and weak compared to the advanced arms mass-produced by megacorporations today.
Rhys was too far to hear the quieter words being exchanged, but the volume of the shouting was clearly agitated. They were yelling at her to drop her gun and to kick it away.
This did not seem like a drill.
Only the three individuals were found up ahead. With no one else emerging from the sliding doors, it seemed the building had gone under lockdown. Security cameras were pointed down at the scene.
The inactivity was making him restless. âWhatâs taking so long?â he demanded. âWhy isnât anyone doing anything?â
âIt is likely the result of the bystander effect and other causes,â Dumpy commented in its deep, measured intonation. âDo you want me to call the authorities? It is prudent to reduce fatal casualties.â
The robotâs unaffected droning had managed to steady his nerves somewhat, helping him regain a semblance of self-control. Rhys worried his lower lip.
The sun was slowly falling below the horizon, and darkness threatened to swallow the world.
Waiting for the police to arrive might be a risk that he wasnât certain the lady could afford to have. On the other hand, he would likely be gunned down the instant that he called attention to himself; running was not ideal.
He had to create a distraction.
âNo.â Rhys sank down into a crouch. His hands were trembling. âWeâre going to do one better.â
Managing to enter the correct numeric sequence into the holographic lock, he snapped the briefcase open and disengaged the laptop from Sleep mode. His fingers fumbled across the keyboard, entering the lengthy password.
Forcing his fear back, he whispered, âIâm going to disable the lights. Itâll give you a narrow window before the backup generator starts. Iâll need you to activate your defense matrix and take out those two guys. Donât overdo the voltage.â He glanced up. âDo you think we can pull that off?â
Processing the command, Dumpy calculated the planâs estimated percentage of success aloud. It also warned that what Rhys was doing was illegal.
âWell, weâre going to try.â Every movement was essentially muscle memory, like a choreographed dance. Brown eyes darted across the screen. âGood thing I still have remote access to the server. This is childâs play. ...Sorry, buddy. Youâre gonna be the hero. I believe in you.â
The sun had set completely, with only the artificial lights illuminating the compound. Switching off the electricity supply a few precious minutes later, they were plunged into absolute darkness.
For a few seconds, he could make out nothing but dark lumpsâsilhouettes who were startled by the abrupt power outage. There was not much time. Motioning rapidly, Rhys hissed under his breath, âGo, go, go!â
He was crossing his fingers.
For a moment, the shape of Dumpy could be seen hovering over one of the men.
There was an unnatural humming, before white-blue light abruptly burst into vision, temporarily igniting the night. The manâs limbs were flailing as though a live wire had been attached to each of his nerves, his body convulsing like a rag doll as the violent electrical current pulsed through him. Not a moment too soon, the tased man collapsed, paralyzed, and his partner shouted his name.
Like machine fire, shots were unloaded blindly at the crackling light. They sounded like fireworks going off, with missed bullets shaking the entire building structure.
Despite Dumpyâs best attempts at evasionâdodging, flying like an erratic pendulumâsparks could be seen when bullets struck sheet metal.
Rhysâ heart plummeted. To his horror, even with the bulletproof design, the robot was soon spiraling out of control. Crashing into the ground like a small meteor, upon impact its emotionless âow, ow, owâ distorted in volume, becoming an unintelligible screech.
âNooo! Dumpy!â
âAtlas will never fall!â The voice was female and vaguely familiar; it had come slicing through the shadows as sharp as a knife.
In the distraction, semi-translucent wings, reminding Rhys of crackling electricity, unfurled from the lithe womanâs back like a butterfly from a cocoon. Half of her body was glowing, where the Siren birthmarks were.
It was over in a second.
By the time the man whirled on his feet, a dime-sized hole had been left between his eyes, revealing liquefied brain matter. The woman could be seen standing upright, the barrel of her customized pearlescent revolver smoking slightly from the discharged elemental round. Her finger only left the trigger when the assailant fell.
Nobody in this place moved a muscle, and it was so quiet that even the sound of their breathing could be heard.

Ocean Solutions Accelerator doubles down on blue economy with new track for later-stage companies
The planet-loving folks at the Sustainable Ocean Alliance started an accelerator a couple years back focusing on very early-stage companies, but this year theyâre expanding the program to accept those that have already closed their first round. The mix of experimental and (comparatively) proven approaches may help diversify the acceleratorâs growing network.
âLast year, amidst the onset of a global pandemic and mounting urgency related to solving the oceanâs greatest challenges, we received unprecedented demand for the Ocean Solutions Accelerator,â said the acceleratorâs co-founder, Craig Dudenhoeffer. âIt became clear to us that now more than ever, ocean tech startups need powerful community support, mentorship and access to those unique opportunities that truly propel their businesses. We decided to double our efforts and run two accelerator cohorts in 2021 in order to support 21 incredible innovators.â
Last yearâs cohort included companies creating robotic fish, kelp-based foods, artificial reefs, aquaculture animal feed and other interesting and potentially breakthrough products. But one thing they all have in common with each other and those from previous years is they are nearly all very early stage.
Ocean Solutions Acceleratorâs third wave tackles a new set of aquatic challenges
Having a prototype and taking on a big problem or market is a great start, but itâs also where a lot of startups wash out. Companies like Coral Vita have powered through repeated disasters (in their case hurricanes and of course the pandemic) to raise money and move toward scaling up.
But others in the sadly undervalued conservation space still have a long road ahead before VCs think itâs worth taking a risk on them. Few check writers will see the problems and potential solutions up close and personal and make a personal connection with the driven and occasionally idealistic young founders, but those that I saw do that in Alaska were convinced.
In the Accelerator over the Sea
This year the accelerator will have two sequential cohorts, an early-stage one in June for pre-seed companies and another in September for those that have raised a seed or A round and have âa strong MVP.â Applications for both are open until April 12th, with 21 spots available. Thatâs Monday, so better get to it.
âIn expanding to two accelerator programs this year, weâre now able to provide highly curated content and tailored support to serve our entrepreneurs and meet them exactly where theyâre at in their unique journeys to addressing our most critical ocean challenges,â said Dudenhoeffer.
While the organization is still small and the accelerator a relatively straightforward affair, the space that they are in is expanding and gaining credit among investors. Renewed attention and funding on climate change, ecological stewardship and alternative energy sources from the new Biden administration change the equations for startups and services in related industries; all of a sudden an idea that seemed wild a couple years ago makes perfect sense. With luck that means a bit of wind in the sails of entrepreneurs trying to save the world.
