How to Handle Storm Damage and Roof Repair: Avoid Costly Mistakes and Protect Your Home
Severe weather can cause significant storm damage and roof repair issues, leaving homeowners with leaks, missing shingles, and structural damage. The biggest challenge after a storm is assessing the damage, finding a reliable contractor, and ensuring the repairs are covered by insurance. Many homeowners delay roof repairs or choose unqualified contractors, which can lead to costly long-term damage.
If you’ve ever wondered, “How do I know if my roof has storm damage?”, “What should I do immediately after a storm?”, or “How do I find a trusted contractor for storm damage and roof repair?”, this guide will help you take the right steps to protect your home and avoid unnecessary expenses.
Problem #1: Failing to Inspect Your Roof After a Storm
❌ The Issue: Hidden Damage Can Lead to Costly Repairs
After a storm, many homeowners assume if their roof looks fine from the ground, there’s no damage. However, storm damage isn’t always visible, and ignoring small issues can lead to:
Leaking roofs that cause water damage inside your home.
Weakening of the roof structure, making it prone to further damage.
Mold and mildew growth, leading to health risks.
✅ The Solution: Schedule a Professional Roof Inspection Immediately
Look for missing or curled shingles, water stains, or sagging areas.
Check gutters and downspouts for shingle granules, which indicate wear.
Have a professional roofing contractor inspect for hidden damage.
📞 MAC Exteriors offers storm damage roof inspections to help homeowners identify issues early and prevent costly repairs.
Problem #2: Waiting Too Long to Repair Storm Damage
❌ The Issue: Delayed Repairs Make the Damage Worse
Many homeowners put off storm damage and roof repair, thinking it’s not urgent. Unfortunately, this leads to:
Leaks worsening over time, causing structural damage.
Higher repair costs as small issues turn into major problems.
Insurance claim denials if damage isn’t reported in time.
✅ The Solution: Act Fast to Minimize Further Damage
Tarp your roof temporarily to prevent further leaks.
Contact a roofing specialist immediately to assess and document the damage.
File an insurance claim as soon as possible for coverage assistance.
📞 MAC Exteriors provides emergency storm damage and roof repair services, ensuring your home gets fast and reliable repairs.
Problem #3: Choosing the Wrong Roofing Contractor
❌ The Issue: Unqualified Contractors Can Do More Harm Than Good
After a storm, scam roofing contractors and storm chasers flood the market, offering cheap repairs that don’t last. This leads to:
Low-quality materials, which wear out quickly.
Poor workmanship, causing ongoing roof problems.
Incomplete repairs, leading to further storm damage.
✅ The Solution: Hire a Licensed and Trusted Roofing Expert
Verify the contractor’s license, insurance, and experience.
Look for local companies with a proven track record.
Get a written estimate and warranty on repairs.
📞 MAC Exteriors is a trusted name in storm damage and roof repair, offering high-quality materials and professional craftsmanship for lasting protection.
Problem #4: Insurance Claim Confusion
❌ The Issue: Many Homeowners Don’t Know How to File a Claim
Storm damage can be stressful, and dealing with insurance companies adds another challenge. Without proper documentation, your claim might be:
Denied due to lack of evidence.
Underpaid, leaving you with expensive repairs.
Delayed, making roof problems worse.
✅ The Solution: Understand the Insurance Claims Process
Take clear photos and videos of all damage.
Contact a professional roofing contractor for a detailed report.
File the claim as soon as possible to avoid delays.
📞 MAC Exteriors works with homeowners to document storm damage and assist with insurance claims, ensuring they get the maximum coverage for repairs.
Problem #5: Ignoring Preventive Roof Maintenance
❌ The Issue: Unmaintained Roofs Suffer More Damage in Storms
A weak or aging roof is more vulnerable to storms, increasing the risk of:
Shingles blowing off, exposing the home to leaks.
Gutter clogs, causing water to back up and damage siding.
Structural weakening, leading to costly replacements.
✅ The Solution: Invest in Preventive Roof Maintenance
Schedule regular roof inspections to catch small issues early.
Keep gutters and downspouts clear to allow proper drainage.
Repair loose or damaged shingles before they become a bigger problem.
📞 MAC Exteriors offers preventive roof maintenance services, helping homeowners strengthen their roofs against storm damage.
Final Thoughts: Protecting Your Home From Storm Damage and Roof Repair Costs
Storms can cause serious roof damage, and delaying repairs can lead to higher costs, insurance claim issues, and structural damage. Taking quick action and hiring qualified roofing experts can save you money and prevent long-term issues.
At MAC Exteriors, we: ✅ Provide fast, professional storm damage and roof repair services. ✅ Work with insurance companies to maximize your claim coverage. ✅ Offer preventive maintenance to protect your home from future storms.

Roof Damage Insurance Claims and Choosing a Roofer
Tumblr media
When your roofing system is damaged, avoid being bullied by your insurance carrier or dealing with unscrupulous contractors. Understanding how insurance claims are handled and how to vet roofing contractors will get your home or business back to normal quickly.
Tumblr media
newimageroofingatlanta.com gathered information on roof damage insurance claims, the inspection process, and hiring a reputable roofing contractor.
Roof Inspections and Insurance Claims
You should consider filing an insurance claim if your roof damage emergency resulted from severe weather, tree fall, or debris impact (act of God), before any work begins. To do so, gather your insurance policy, facts about the damage, and call your insurance carrier to initiate the claim process and schedule an inspection.
During an evaluation inspection, the insurance adjuster must document the following when assessing your loss:
Damages
Material needed for repairs
Labor costs to be allocated for repairs
or
Was the roof damaged sufficiently to declare it a total loss
Material required for replacement or re-roof
Labor costs to be allocated for replacement or re-roof
Tumblr media
To ensure you receive the maximum benefit from your insurance policy, call a professional roofing contractor to have an independent assessment done (your roofing contractor may schedule their inspection to coincide with the adjuster’s evaluation).
Note: An insurance adjuster cannot determine whether a roofing system has sustained sufficient damage to approve or deny your claim. They are only there to collect evidence for the claims department.
Tip: If your roof damage repair costs do not exceed your insurance policy’s deductible, you may be better off paying out-of-pocket for repairs.
Watch this informative video explaining how insurance deductibles work.
youtube
Request a Reinspection – If you find discrepancies between the insurance adjuster’s and the roofing contractor’s findings, you can request a reinspection or contract an independant insurance public adjuster.
Reinspections are common practice, in which the insurance adjuster will meet with the roofing contractor to review the damages done to your roof.
Upon approval of the claim to repair or replace your roofing system, your insurance provider may select the roofing contractor to complete the work. They may also leave that determination up to you.
Note: In regions where a disaster has occurred, insurance companies may set up emergency stations and follow special temporary procedures to expedite repairs and rebuilding.
Tumblr media
In these scenarios, it is crucial to keep receipts and records for temporary repairs, lodging, and meals, as your insurance company will likely reimburse you. The amounts you can claim during an emergency displacement are typically defined in your homeowners insurance policy.
Hiring A Roofing Contractor – What to Look For
Natural disasters and severe weather events attract some of the worst characters in the roofing business preying on unsuspecting property owners under immense pressure to get things back to normal.
Replacing a structure’s roof is a significant investment that needs to be done right, by a contractor that can be fully vetted and held accountable for the quality of their work.
When fielding bids from contractors to repair or replace your roof, consider the following factors into the decision-making process.
Does the contractor have:
A written proposal
A valid business license
A permanent business location
In-state references
Proof of insurance
In-depth knowledge and understanding of your roofing system
Up-to-date industry education
Material and workmanship warranties
A maintenance proposal
Look or ask for:
Manufacturer’s certifications
Roofing association memberships
Industry awards and recognition
Google reviews
Tumblr media
Note: Request a welcome packet or business presentation with the contractor’s general information like this.
Finally, avoid doing business with roofing contractors that:
Cannot verify their company information and statements
Provide an excessively high or low bid
Cannot provide local references
Only deal in cash
Pressure or rush you to sign a contract
It is generally advised to acquire quotes from a minimum of three contractors for your roofing needs. This allows you to compare prices and scopes when determining which contractor to award your business.
Insurance Claims and Roofers
In this article, you discovered essential information about roof inspections, insurance claims, deductibles, and hiring a roofing contractor.
Once you understand how roof inspections and insurance claims work, you can be more vigilant about the roof repair process and prevent costly out-of-pocket expenses.
Making poor decisions during an insurance claim process or when hiring your roofing contractor may leave you with costly out-of-pocket expenses and poor quality repairs.

Emergency Roof Repair and Storm Cleanup Commissions
As mentioned in previous posts and pinned @anotherdayforchaosfay , we have just been through a natural disaster. Please read the pinned post on that blog. Updates will be added once we get outside and photograph the damage for our insurance claim.
I have opened commissions three months earlier than planned because we need to raise money to cover our insurance deductible as well as hiring someone to remove the tree from our roof and yard. The tree is owned by a lazy landlordlord who owns the property next door. We have told him repeatedly it needs to be trimmed or there will be damage. His property got a quick install sunroof.
I have four slots available across the board and prices start at $150 USD.
I have made the option of commissioning me for a quilt available. Three finished quilt tops are listed as commissions because they're ready for handquilting. Several people have inquired about one of the tops, so now's your chance to have it done sooner than later.
If you can do only a partial payment right now, DM me. I'll write up a contract for payments, and will require 50% upfront and weekly/monthly installs after that. You will then receive an invoice.
Commissions will begin immediately because we now have power.
I will close commissions when all slots are filled or June 1st, 2024. Whichever happens first (hopefully the former). If slots are filled, I will reopen them again after I finish all the commissions. I work fast and may complete six quilts netween now and then.
Donations are accepted, and there are four listings available in my shop with the option to pay more than my asking price (if you add an extra zero, I may very well cry).
Samples of my work below as well as in my gallery.

Ahhh it's one of those weeks when we laugh to keep from screaming.
While recovering from my covid vaccine hangover and trying to track down the no-call-no-show contractors who were supposed to come and repair our broken furnace, I heard a dripping sound from the ceiling that turned out to be a roof leak in our attic. Probably from the big storm earlier this year, we had some bad wind shears come through and some of our neighbors lost shingles and siding, so I wouldn't be surprised. We don't have roof access to check, so it's bucket and insurance claim time.
Mind you, this is less than a month after husband's car finally went kaput and we had to get a new one, plus the kitties needing their annual checkup and flea treatments, and our home warranty is coming due (even though it takes some GALL to ask us to renew when they've been so useless with the current claim).
Catch me coping with this by screaming into a jar and then staying up late bingeing Penny Dreadful and making new batches of powder for the shop. Just like a witch, ain't it?
So suffice it to say, there's a few surprises heading for the shop in the coming months, and I'll have several new things on my table for the Yule weekend markets, if anyone wants to swing through Williamsburg or Richmond the weekend of the 21st. (And of course, regular shop orders are always welcome.)
Hope your December is going better than mine! 😅

I always roll my eyes when I see people be like "well tommy HAD to have been flying the plane" cause like. all you were doing is talking about reality vs the show like why r people so pressed about that. like I'm an emt and I do that all the time cause I think it's fun to talk about the realities of ems care vs tvs depiction of it. I'm not saying the show is bad or whatever i just like talking about emergency medicine and how tv gets it wrong alot. anyways I appreciate u talking all about aviation its really interesting and I hope ur not too disheartened by people being weird cause I love reading ur posts about it <3
Hypothetically, the show decides to film an emergency where a huge chunk of an airliner's roof tears off. The whole plane is basically hanging by a thread, one engine fails and the landing gears are not secure, but somehow the pilots manage to make a successful landing. What is it? An open top plane instead of a bus? The writers are running out of ideas.
Or what if it's an Airbus with a faulty auto-throttle that needs constant monitoring by the flight crew. When the captain is holding onto the throttle, he just happens to have a heart attack and lets go, now the plane is banking to one side because the malfunctioning auto-throttle has rolled back one of the engine. Oh wait, the first officer is more used to flying Soviet planes and their altitude indicator has a completely opposite mechanism comparing to the western one. (Western ADI shows you the horizon, Soviet ADI turns with the plane) So the first officer turns the wrong way and crashes the plane. Wow, really? A Final Destination parody?
Or maybe a FedEx employee tries to commit insurance fraud by hijacking a cargo plane, killing the pilots with a hammer and a spear gun then crashing it to hide the evidence. The first officer, suffering from brain injury due to the attack, decides to fly the DC-10 like a fighter jet to help his equally injured colleagues subdue the hijacker. He first makes a sudden steep climb, then a sharp roll to the left until the plane is flying upside down, and finally dives so quickly it's approaching the speed of sound. Somehow they manages to land safely and the attacker is arrested. Did the writers get the wrong memo and wrote an action movie instead of a plane emergency?
Except I didn't write all these to mock the show, these are actually Aloha Airlines Flight 243, TAROM Flight 371 and FedEx Flight 705. (The FedEx DC-10 was later repaired and it flew until December 31, 2022. Amazing.) Sometimes real life is stranger than fiction, and it is fun to talk about, I think you understand exactly what I mean. We all get to learn what works, what doesn't, and what is surprisingly realer than we thought.
Even the shark on freeway call people keep bringing up to prove how crazy, how unrealistic the show is, well, there is a place called Florida, and everything that can happen has happened there.
youtube
This shark didn't bite anyone though, it didn't survive the crash. :/
I actually started writing about real life pilot training and how hard it is to fly a helicopter because of the discourse going around back then claiming Tommy didn't deserve a medal because he did nothing. "It's not real, it's a TV show where anyone can do anything, anyone can drive that helicopter lol." I wrote about the difference between helicopter pilots and fixed wing pilots because I found the contrast between them interesting, and Tommy's characterization is aptly appropriate for someone who flies helicopters professionally. I even worked that into a little headcanon of my own, about Tommy dating an airplane pilot in the past and the difference in lifestyle and attitude that broke them up. I've never forced anyone to accept my explanation as absolute fact, it's always about my interpretation of Tommy's character. People can ignore top/bottom debates, D/s discourse, KINKTOMATO, right? Yet I say Tommy doesn't fly a 4 engine air tanker (but he's still super badass as a helicopter pilot, I wrote a 3 part series just about how dangerous and difficult the cruise ship rescue mission in 7x03 is), people just feel the need to tell me I'm wrong, to express their displease of me obsessing over tiny details, or simply "shut the hell up". Adding a disclaimer and creating a whole tag for people to block wasn't even enough. It's just... discouraging.
I don't know, I just hope the show never goes full Fire Country (2022-). It misrepresents real life firefighting so bad that CAL FIRE chief publicly condemned the show. The president of CAL FIRE's union even made an unsuccessful attempt to sue the show and later released a statement basically saying "we can't force them to do anything, but know that we have nothing to do with the show." I just think real firefighters spending the whole afternoon talking to the news about how dangerous and impractical it is to dump bunch of water over a crowded urban area, then immediately after that 911!LAFD, a fire department for the city not the surrounding woodland, showed up with the exact air tanker Trump suggested, that would be kinda... goofy. I've seen a retired firefighter praising the later seasons of 9-1-1 for striking a good balance between dramatization and authenticity. I hope they keep it that way.

Dozens of pro-Palestinian activists occupied and vandalised offices of the insurer Allianz overnight, throwing red paint over walls and windows in protest at the firm’s links with Israel.
Surrey Police said three activists had been arrested at the Allianz Insurance building in Guildford.
A man and two women were detained on suspicion of aggravated trespass and criminal damage, and were being held in custody. The force said inquiries remained ongoing.
The action began on Monday evening as people around the world commemorated the first anniversary of the Oct 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.
Palestine Action said it targeted 10 offices owned by the German financial services firm in protest at the company’s investment in Elbit Systems, Israel’s biggest weapons firm. It has said Allianz is one of Elbit Systems’ “principal institutional shareholders”.
In a statement, the group called for Allianz to pull out of Israel, adding: “Without insurance, Elbit couldn’t operate in Britain. Palestine Action will cost more than you gain from enabling genocide.
“Allianz, it’s time to stop insuring and investing in Israeli weapons firm Elbit Systems.”
Nine of the occupations ended within hours, but the Guildford office remained occupied on Tuesday morning.
A number of Palestine Action supporters could be seen on the roof of the office’s entrance, spraying the walls with red paint and daubing slogans on the windows that read “drop Elbit” and “free Palestine”.
A police team trained in the removal of protesters at height arrived at  Allianz Insurance building by mid-morning, and staff were asked to work from home. Surrey Police later said the three activists had been arrested, bringing an end to the occupation.
Supt Mark Offord said: “Officers were sent to the premises as soon as we became aware that the protesters had broken into the Allianz Insurance premises. While we recognise the right to protest, there is no excuse for anybody using it as an excuse to engage in criminal activity.”
Sites in Manchester, Lancaster, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol and Milton Keynes were also targeted. The cost of repairing the damage is estimated to run into tens of thousands of pounds.
In September, the group vandalised 10 branches of Barclays Bank in protest against what it described as the bank’s ties to Israel.
The targeting of Allianz offices came as vigils were held to remember those killed and taken hostage by Hamas on Oct 7.
Palestine Action claims Israel’s response to Hamas, which has killed as many as 41,000 Palestinians in Gaza, has justified its tactics of direct action against businesses with links to the Jewish state.
Elbit System manufactures over 85 per cent of Israel’s drones, including quadcopters used by the nation’s military to perform targeted attacks.
The group added: “Elbit has publicly advertised its weaponry as being ‘battle-tested’ on Palestinians. Its business operations are central to Israeli war crimes in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon, and its technologies uphold the brutal occupation regime.
“These nationwide actions serve as a reminder that, throughout the past 12 months, Western capital has continued to profit from the mass murder of Palestinians.
“If Allianz refuses to understand that dealing with Elbit is immoral, it must be made clear that maintaining its involvement will become increasingly unprofitable.”
A spokesman for Allianz said: “We have had disruption overnight at several of our offices. The safety and security of our colleagues is paramount, and we have closed these sites today. Our operations and service to customers and clients are unaffected. As this is an ongoing police matter we have no further comment at this stage.”
Police said officers were called at 4am to reports of red paint being sprayed onto two buildings in the City of London. They arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of criminal damage following a chase on foot.  The offices were later sealed off by police.

Ok, so all at once (though not really, it's more that That Guy has neglected these things forever and made it impossible for me to take care of them), we have:
bathroom floor is rotting
AC is broken
driveway has sunken and there's a literal hole in it
very leaky window which he filed an insurance claim for and will be repaired whenever, but he probably should have just paid for the repair without filing a claim because it's under $2k and now his premiums are going to go up
the ceiling fan doesn't work
deck is literally rotting
gutters are clogged
garage roof has water damage
lots of small wasps inside recently
ants in the walls
all four outdoor lights on the front of the house need replaced
basement wall is leaking but he can pretend it's not because there are boxes in the way
fridge is rattling
And then add to that I have a "new" job that's wrecking me (it's gotten better after she stopped having me go into the cooler to schlep drinks around) and taking up both my physical and mental time because I'm stuck in a brain loop of frustrations with how the place is run.
Today I have work and then groceries and then after groceries I can barely move so I won't get anything else done. I have no idea how much I work this week so can't really plan anything. It's also going to be very hot this week so I won't be getting outside much.

AITA for not paying for my girlfriend's haircut?
Hi everyone. My girlfriend (32f) and I (38m) have been together for two years. I lost my job about three months into our relationship. During this time, she really came through for me and helped out A LOT. I did not have a car so she would help me deliver orders on Doordash and Grubhub so I could pay my bills. She also covered the difference out of her pocket if I was running short. To say I'm grateful to her is an understatement.
I finally found a new job two months ago. I'm saving up for a car so she's been letting me borrow hers. She accrued some debt while I was out of a job and I have repaid about half of that. However, now I'm worried that she's starting to only want me for my money.
We got into an argument over the weekend because she called to ask me if she could borrow some money to get a haircut. Apparently she is running short due to an expected home repair cost, but already paid the hairdresser a deposit that she would have to forfeit if she rescheduled it. I had a long day at work and was exhausted, both mentally and physically. So when I noticed that my phone was ringing, I was really excited to see her name. But after I answered, she immediately asked me for money. I felt crushed because she did it without even asking how my day was first. I told her that I guess I understand what my new role is in her life now and she threw a huge fit about it.
She claims that she "gave me her everything" for a year and a half just to keep a roof over my head, and that she's accrued debt from when I wasn't working so I shouldn't be so opposed to doing her a favor. I recently bought her car a new set of tires and got the brake pads replaced, as well as gave her some money to repay the debts with. I also have paid for the car payment and insurance since I started working because I have it at my place more than she does while I save up to buy my own. So it's not like I don't contribute to her expenses already. She keeps guilt tripping me because "a haircut is a small ask considering everything I've done for you" which feels very controlling. Now she won't talk to me and I'm scared that she's going to breakup with me without even hearing me out.
I hated taking her money when I was jobless and that I have to use her car now, I didn't want to do it in the first place. Anytime I needed her to pay for something, it was because it was an important expense like my rent or power. So the way she is asking for something unnecessary like a haircut just feels like a slap in the face.
AITA?
**Comments**
galatic\_opal:
*YTA a year and a half she helped pay for all your expenses and that’s good you’ve paid back half but to get upset about her wanting for you to pay for her hair appointment because she is short on money cause she is still dealing with debts because of you is fucking ridiculous. You brought up paying for maintenance and insurance and actual car payment but you literally said you use her car more than her so you should be paying for that. Can’t believe you have the nerve to say you think she only wants you for your money when you have USED her for almost 2 years.*
-
SpiritSylvan:
*The way my eyes ROLLED at the “I think she wants me for my money!” when he didn’t HAVE money for the longest time.*
*She’s trying to have a relationship. OP seems like he’d rather have a sugar mommy.*
*What fucking money does she “only” want you for, OP? You have more entitlement than you have assets.*
OOP: hey I don't think it's fair to say that I just want a sugar momma when I never felt good about taking her money in the first place
-
runrunpuppets:
"I recently bought her car a new set of tires and got the brake pads replaced, as well as gave her some money to repay the debts with"
*You clearly still owe debts that have put a burden on her when she could have dumped your ass and let you cry about it. You think that because things are on the upswing for you that all of the debts are now even. Ohhhh you help pay for a car you personally use more than her! Wow! She covered your pathetic ass for a YEAR AND A HALF and now that she's clearly struggling you are bitching over a fucking haircut. You suck man!*
*YTA, pay for the haircut, and honestly I hope she breaks up with you. If you don't pay for the haircut, I hope she breaks up with you.*
-
RoughCow854:
*What gets me, is OP should be paying for those things on the car. He is using her car because he doesn’t have one, so he’s putting on the wear and tear.*
*I’m sincerely hoping this is fake, because if not, this person is really is obtuse.*
*YTA OP. It comes across as if you were just with her for her money. Which, it sounds like you’re still using her. She’s not mad because of the haircut. She’s mad because she asked for a small favor and you completely shot her down and insulted her, after everything she’s done for you. Hopefully she smartens up and leaves you.*
OOP: well it's her car.
-
crocodilezebramilk:
*Info: Have you repayed her in full yet or are you still making payments for the debt you put her in?*
OOP: No I have not. I've repayed about half of it.

Update - 4 days later

Yusuke pushed off from the wall where he'd been waiting as Megumi came into view. Kid might not be under his roof anymore but he still wanted to check in with him weekly. Usually just some food and a chat. Now that he was a grown ass man he could see how fucking insane the shit he was asked to do as at Megumi's age was, so he worried. Just a bit. He had a scrap of a heart, okay? Sue him. He threw an arm over the teen's shoulder, even though he knew that kinda thing annoyed him. The annoyance made it fun.
"Hey Megumi, think you can extort some cash from your sugar daddy? Your old man’s got some shit that needs replacing and insurance companies haven’t started adding ‘acts of demon’ as a viable claim yet.”
Hitting up his foster kid or ward or whatever the fuck for cash was kind of a low move but Yusuke had not grown a goody two shoes streak when he stopped being a delinquent. And being a food stall owner and extremely niche detective did not pay for the kind of dough you needed to repair the property damage that said niche detective work sometimes resulted in. He was never doing a yokai cheating case again, all he did was take do the job and take the pictures and it's his place that gets trashed. Unbelievable.
