Settling a Health Insurance Claim: A Step-by-Step Guide
Filing a health insurance claim can seem complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right information and a clear plan, you can navigate the process smoothly and get the benefits you're entitled to. This step-by-step guide will help you understand how to settle a health insurance claim easily and efficiently.
 Understanding Health Insurance Claims
A health insurance claim is a request for payment that you or your healthcare provider submit to your insurance company. It covers medical services, treatments, or supplies that are covered under your policy. Understanding the claims process is crucial to ensuring that your medical expenses are paid timely and correctly.
Types of Health Insurance Claims
There are two main types of health insurance claims:
1. Cashless Claims
In a cashless claim, you don’t pay upfront for the medical services. Instead, your insurance company directly settles the bill with the hospital or healthcare provider. This option is available only at network hospitals that have tie-ups with your insurer.
2. Reimbursement Claims
In a reimbursement claim, you pay for the medical expenses upfront and then submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement. You need to keep all receipts, bills, and documents to support your claim.
Step-by-Step Guide to Settling a Health Insurance Claim
Step 1: Review Your Health Insurance Policy
Before you need to file a claim, familiarize yourself with your health insurance policy. Understand what is covered, the exclusions, the claim limits, and the process for filing a claim. Knowing these details in advance can save you time and prevent misunderstandings.
Step 2: Notify Your Insurance Company
Inform your insurance company as soon as possible about the hospitalization or treatment. For planned treatments, notify them in advance, and for emergencies, do so within the timeframe specified in your policy, typically 24 to 48 hours. This step is crucial for both cashless and reimbursement claims.
Step 3: Gather Necessary Documents
Collect all the documents you’ll need to support your claim. These may include:
Hospital admission and discharge summary
Medical reports and prescriptions
Bills and receipts for treatment and medications
ID proof and health insurance card
Claim form from the insurance company
Step 4: Fill Out the Claim Form
Complete the claim form provided by your insurance company. Ensure all details are accurate and match the information on your supporting documents. Any discrepancies can lead to delays or rejection of your claim.
Step 5: Submit the Claim
For cashless claims, follow these steps:
Present your health insurance card at the network hospital.
Fill out the pre-authorization form provided by the hospital.
The hospital will send the form to the insurance company for approval.
Once approved, the insurance company will settle the bill directly with the hospital.
For reimbursement claims, follow these steps:
Submit the completed claim form and all supporting documents to your insurance company.
Ensure you keep copies of all documents for your records.
Submit the claim within the timeframe specified in your policy, usually within 30 days of discharge.
Step 6: Follow Up on Your Claim
Stay in touch with your insurance company to track the status of your claim. You can call their customer service, check online, or use their mobile app if available. Regular follow-ups help ensure that any issues are addressed promptly.
Step 7: Claim Approval and Settlement
Once your claim is processed, the insurance company will inform you of the approval or rejection. If approved, the payment will be made as per the terms of your policy. For cashless claims, the hospital bill is settled directly. For reimbursement claims, the amount will be transferred to your bank account.
Tips for a Smooth Health Insurance Claim Process
1. Keep Records
Maintain a file with all your medical records, bills, and insurance documents. Having everything organized makes the claims process easier and quicker.
2. Be Prompt
Submit your claim and supporting documents as soon as possible. Delays can lead to claim rejection or longer processing times.
3. Provide Accurate Information
Ensure all information provided on the claim form and documents is accurate. Errors or discrepancies can cause delays or denial of your claim.
4. Understand Your Policy
Know the specifics of your health insurance policy, including coverage limits, exclusions, and the claims process. This knowledge helps manage your expectations and ensures you’re prepared when you need to file a claim.
5. Use Network Hospitals
For cashless claims, always use network hospitals. These hospitals have agreements with your insurance company, making the process smoother and faster.
6. Seek Help if Needed
If you face difficulties or have questions, don’t hesitate to contact your insurance company’s customer service or your insurance agent. They can provide guidance and help resolve any issues.
Common Reasons for Claim Rejection
Understanding why claims are rejected can help you avoid common pitfalls. Here are some reasons claims might be denied:
1. Incorrect or Incomplete Documentation
Ensure all documents are complete and accurate. Missing information or errors can lead to claim rejection.
2. Policy Exclusions
Know what your policy covers and excludes. Claims for excluded treatments or services will be denied.
3. Late Submission
Submit your claim within the specified timeframe. Late submissions can result in rejection.
4. Non-Disclosure of Pre-Existing Conditions
Always disclose pre-existing conditions when buying your policy. Non-disclosure can lead to claim rejection.
5. Expired Policy
Ensure your policy is active and premiums are paid up to date. Claims made on expired policies will be rejected.
Conclusion: Simplify Your Health Insurance Claims
Filing a health insurance claim doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By understanding your policy, gathering the necessary documents, and following the correct procedures, you can ensure a smooth and efficient claims process. Remember, your health insurance is there to support you in times of need, and being prepared can make all the difference.
Use this guide to demystify the health insurance claim process and ensure you get the coverage you deserve. Whether you’re dealing with a planned treatment or an emergency, following these steps will help you navigate the claims process with confidence and ease.

What then is the explanation? Why do workers typically push for more consumption rather than for shorter hours? Here I think Cohen’s argument is untypically unclear. He tells us that workers do indeed want more goods (other things being equal) but it is also plain that they dislike the toil then need to engage in to get those goods and evidences that claim by making the point that if workers were granted money such that they didn’t need to work at their jobs, very few of them would choose to do so gratis, and there would be a dramatic decline in the amount of work done. His suggestion seems to be that since there is a permanent propaganda campaign in support of people getting more stuff and no corresponding campaign in favour of free time of the kind one can enjoy without extra spending, extra consumption always has a salience for people that additional leisure lacks. I think Cohen’s uncharacteristically feeble discussion of this point can be explained in part by a blindspot in his thinking. First of all, he neglects the way in which states support and encourage consumer spending and simultaneously encourage a culture of work and effort through moralizing campaigns, stigmatization of “shirkers” and the like. Take the first of these elements: states help establish and support structures of lending to help people to do things like buy their own homes and then furnish their homes. They do this in a variety of ways, by providing support to banks and other financial institutions but also by giving borrowers all kinds of tax breaks. In order to buy the things they want, consumers have little choice but to borrow, but once they have borrowed they have to repay and repaying requires income, which requires work. Now perhaps workers could simply refuse the blandishments of capital and refuse to borrow in order to consume and then the option to work less would be more available to them. But I think this neglects the competitive and social aspects of consumption that Cohen rather dismissively refers to as “keeping up with the Joneses”. One need not be of a particularly competitive or comparative disposition to be caught up in social standards of self-presentation that are inherently comparative in nature, as Adam Smith knew in that famous passage about labourers being ashamed to appear in public without a linen shirt or, in some countries, leather shoes.
Still feels like everyone's discourse on consumerism & capitalism is stuck in the 1960s, he criticizes Cohen's view and maybe I'm out of touch but this doesn't feel much better. Maybe because the only people who write on consumerism are petite-bourgeoisie who unlike most people do live like this.
Speaking as a member of the salaried class, while I do appreciate the gee-gaws I am able to purchase with my full-time job, speaking as I believe a somewhat representative member of the professional-managerial class I am more concerned with rent, health insurance, and the ability to hopefully retire at some point, and these guide my financial decisions. I purchase some fun stuff I didn't choose my career to be able to afford a fancier grill. I crave the respectability of not living in a van.
Now there Is perhaps a discussion of how I could move to somewhere cheaper like Montana or Spain and why I don't do that but if you're going to discuss this issue I think you gotta address issues like that directly

Civilian Gothamites realizing they can get vengeance through Sword!Robin
Gothamites figuring out if they happen to mention a rogue treating animals poorly within hearing range of sword!Robin that rogue will be in custody with at least four fractures and a concussion and Damian being completely aware that like 63% of these people are lying but it’s the only way he can get experience with the nonlethal takedowns he’s experimenting with bc everyone keeps complaining about how he treats his opponents and allies
Like he’s guiding a civilian to safety and they mention that “this would be the worst thing to happen to me today if riddler didn’t stab my fucking cat” and this civilian does not own a cat but they did own a car that was just paid off but riddler fucking crushed it with a stupid ass hot air balloon that’s shaped like a fucking question mark and Damian is aware of this bc he was the one that verified the insurance claim (but he’s been looking for a reason to punch Nygma in the throat since his last Arkham escape when he called Damian a moron)
And he also knows that if he plays along with it and says ‘as if I’d let that gaudy and tactless imbecile get away with committing such atrocities’ when prompted that he’ll get away with barely a slap on the wrist like he gets three half hearted but long lectures he’s not going to listen to and an online sensitivity training seminar he goads Tim into completing (Damian and Tim 100% try to trick each other into doing work they don’t want to do and full heartedly believe the other has no idea what they’re doing)
Bruce’s tendency for finding small crashouts at risk of becoming future rogues in Gotham and deciding they need love & supervision but what actually happens bc he’s so fucking awkward is they get almost the same amount of supervision just with like an hour of intense helicopter parenting a week but honestly besides that they just have more money and resources to do fuck shit
Tim 🤝🏾 Damian: using the manipulation tactics they learned from their mothers then later improved on with help from an assassin cult and bat/cape interrogation questioning techniques on the homies
#Both central city and gotham are referred to as crashout central and no one’s ever sure which city is being mentioned unless a cape is named#random Gotham civilians outsourcing a rogue getting their ass kicked to a middle schooler with a katana is fucking funny#Damian & Tim 100% try to trick each other into doing work they don’t like and definitely believe the other has no idea what theyre doing#Whenever damian gets benched the civilians protest until he’s back on duty#and are just generally unhelpful like ‘answer your questions?? That’s crazy I got a question for you: where’s my guy??’#Random gothamite: Batman’s so mean like free my guy 😔 he didn’t even do anything?? He’s just a little guy#Their friend visiting from out of state who’s pretty sure they saw that kid fuck up a dinosaur with no backup: 🤨 ikyfl#the loa ninja who came for a welfare check: you’re joking right???#Sword!robin#robin 5#Robin V#gothamites definitely tried to count the robins but they change names heights & costumes so often that no one’s really sure#so there’s angry!Robin nerd!Robin emo!Robin blonde!Robin and sword!Robin#but there’s also the theories of robin being an amalgamation of every child ghost in Gotham or a shapeshifter with an emo dad#only in gotham#dc civilians#Damian Wayne#Damian Al Ghul#Damian Al Ghul Wayne#dc robin#robin#dc comics#Civilian Gothamites: that polite young man!!#The bats & everyone else that knows Damian: 🤨#Damian currently using psychological warfare against scarecrow a rogue w/ a doctorate in psych and winning: dr crane?? more like dr cringe#Damian: sometimes I just get the urge to weep inconsolably not out of fear but bc I know you believe yourself to be a threat & that’s false#Insurance companies in Gotham either make so much money it’s insane or every employee has 746 hits out on them at all times

In case you are interested in further museum horror stories, I was not working there, but here it goes: a small kid, aged about 24 months, was left to roam free by their parents, who were very obnoxiously taking pictures of themselves with some of the objects on display as if this were a professional shoot. This was on a tour, mind, so they were not only being a tad annoying, their behaviour was not very polite, too, given the tour guide was talking to the group. Their kid was extremely noisy, running around and at one point, went straight for their mother's legs and hugged her from behind, causing her to almost stumble into a huge 18th century silver tankard due to the unexpected force of the child crashing into the back of her knees. The entire room seemed to gasp, anticipating to become witnesses in a high-stakes insurance claim and police investigation. Now, this was a special event guided tour with a costumed interpreter in full 18th century Prussian regimentals, who, looking at the concerned face of the museum worker close by, and the annoyed ones of the visitors, took charge of the situation: he used his walking stick to point at the child in one astonishingly swift motion and grumbled something like "You! Eh, children...", giving the parents a very dirty look. The funniest thing was, this was the moment he seemed to be most believably in character. The little one turned to their mum, buried their face in her leg and remained quiet for the rest of the tour. I feel a little bad for the child, who should clearly have been better supervised (or not brought along to a tour for older children and adults at all) but I hope it was a lesson to the parents. You don't get to be the focus of negative attention by an 18th century king in full dress uniform every day, after all.
Good for him.
You're right, though, I will say- that's on the parents. If you can't find a babysitter or think your two-year-old will get something out of the museum (hey, start 'em young!), it is now your job to run interference on that two-year-old. You don't get to take Instagram pics if you elected to bring a toddler to the Fragile Priceless Artifacts Zone.
Like I said in an earlier ask, I've honestly had more issues with adults than kids only a little bit older than that and up. Children are used to hearing "don't do this" and following directions. Adults are more likely to think "why?" and even after having it explained, "that doesn't apply to me."
Most people of all ages are fine in museums, to be clear! It's just the small number of jerks that stick out in one's mind.

Nuanced Foil Lena AU Pt 3
After Lena's mic drop outside L-Corp, CatCo is aflurry by the time Kara arrives. During the morning's pitch meeting, James wants an official interview as soon as possible. Half the room turns to Kara, but she remains quiet, saved only by Nia volunteering herself as tribute.
"I'll reach out to her team," she offers. "Any particular angle you're looking for?"
James shakes his head. "We'll let her guide us on that-- make that clear to her people and it might get us in the door faster."
"On it."
---
To Kara's surprise, Lena accepts the interview offer with Nia almost immediately, and more than that, agrees to a fully televised interview at CatCo HQ. On the day of, Kara doesn't need to be there-- in fact, she's sure Lena would prefer if she wasn't. But she lurks in a corner of the studio with a handful of other reporters, watching as the finishing make up touches are made and the mic packs are given their final adjustments.
Her heart beats loudly in her chest as the room quiets, and the countdown starts.
"Thank you for being with us tonight, Miss Luthor." Nia's tone is rich and professional, betraying nothing of the relatively friendly conversation they'd shared before the cameras started rolling. "As I'm sure you can imagine, a lot of people have been asking questions following your comments earlier this week."
Lena smiles self-deprecatingly. "Of course-- Has another Luthor lost their mind? More at eleven."
She chuckles at herself, but where others might have seemed disingenuous in doing so, it only serves to make Lena more approachable. Nia's responding grin is a testament to that, with some of her first-big-interview jitters easing off, allowing her to relax just a little.
"But can you blame them? A Luthor speaking out against a Super certainly carries some heavy baggage."
Lena nods. "It does, unfortunately."
"So let's get the big question out of the way, shall we? Are you, Lena Luthor, denouncing Supergirl?"
"No, not at all," Lena delivers, her smile still in place. Historically, Lena's smiles in public interviews are a little too perfect to be real, but tonight the one she wears is warm, gentle, and humanizing.
"Yet you claimed Supergirl was a burden," Nia digs a little.
"I did. I do. Since her first appearance three years ago, National City's infrastructure has been overbudget to the tune of 1.6 billion dollars overall. That's a lot of money that the city simply doesn't have. It's money that its *citizens* don't have."
Nia nods thoughtfully. "But as a scientist, wouldn't you agree that corellation doesn't always equal causation?"
"Sometimes that's the case, and it can absolutely be said that equal or greater damage wouldn't have occurred without Supergirl in the mix. I'm certain studies are currently taking place to determine the true relationship, but really, the whole thing simply sheds light on the greater issue at hand."
"Which is?"
"Tell me, Miss Nal-- if you step out into the street and get hit by a car, what happens?"
Nia's eyes widen slightly. "Go to the hospital, hopefully!"
There's a laugh in her voice, and Lena joins in, waving her off. "Yes, of course! You're fine, maybe a few broken bones. But it's still an ER visit, maybe even an ambulance ride to get there. So who pays for all that?"
"My insurance, I would think. Or theirs."
"Bingo." Lena leans in, suddenly more intense. "Now let's say it wasn't a car that hit you. A hero pulls you out of the way, breaking your wrist in the process. They don't mean to, of course, but accidents happen. It may not even be a result of their speed or strength, just the wrong amount of pressure applied the wrong direction. What happens then?"
Nia blinks. She doesn't respond right away, which gives Lena the opportunity to continue.
"Do heroes have insurance that would cover medical bills? Could you take a hero to court and sue for damages?"
Kara's stomach clenches, and she has to fight every urge she has to not to interrupt, to rescue her protegee from the offensive Lena is suddenly on.
"What if Supergirl is investigating a crime, and believes there is relevant evidence inside your home. Do heroes have the burden of obtaining a warrant before entering your residence? If she gets the house number wrong, and enters an entirely different home by accident, what recourse do those homeowners have to get repaid for property and emotional damages?"
The studio is so quiet, one could hear a pin drop. But where everyone else seems stunned, Nia looks thoughtful.
"Are you saying that heroes shouldn't do what they do to help protect the public?"
Lena eases back in her chair a little bit, shaking her head. "I think it's clear by now that without heroes, National City wouldn't be here. It certainly wouldn't be the same city it is today, at the very least."
"So what are you suggesting?"
"Oversight. Legislation. Regulation." Lena shrugs. "Think about it-- every other position within our judicial system, as flawed as it is, requires demonstrable qualifications. Lawyers have the bar, police officers undergo months of training... to what standards do we hold a hero?"
"It's sounding a little like you're calling for registration," Nia hedges.
Lena lifts her hands. "I understand that's a slippery slope when it comes heroes, or really anyone with special abilities. I won't speak to that. And honestly, I'm not claiming to have all the answers. I'm just asking the questions."
Shifting in her seat, Nia glances at her notepad. "And what would you say to those concerned that you're following in your brother's footsteps? As you say, it can be a slippery slope."
Taking a deep breath, Kara watches Lena consider her answer. For a moment, Lena's gaze unfocuses as she thinks, looking inward, before sharpening with resolve.
"I would say... you're right to be concerned. I certainly was, making the decision to say anything on the matter. In a lot of ways, I don't feel like I have the right to ask these questions. But if not me, then who? Who has the platform or the privilege to ask and actually be heard?"
"So you have responsibility."
Lena smiles again, close-lipped and sweet.
"I'd say we all do, don't you think?"

A Disgraced Trooper's Last Resort
Corrie moonshine has the kind of punch that can knock your teeth out. It's bootlegged with whatever they can find that won't outright kill them if it settles in their stomach, but definitely strong enough that it would sooner be considered outright gutrot than an actual FDA approved drink.
Not something your run of the mill liquor license or health insurance would cover.
Not that Fox really concerns himself with either of those things as he takes a swig from his lucky flask. To him a drink is a drink, especially when he feels like he needs it most. And he did need that extra push of liquid courage tonight more than he ever had before.
To put it simply, he was between a rock and a hard place. Relations between the GAR and the Guard were at an all time low. And, despite his Corries saying otherwise, it was all his fault.
He'd stumbled and made some terribly misguided mistakes. Grasped at tantalising straws that he'd hoped would be his and his men's salvation, only to fail time and time again. Burying himself and his troopers deeper and deeper in a grave that had been prepared for them since arrival. Eagerly applauded by the man who'd made them all his fools and jesters.
He'd botched Commander Tano's capture and then shot a brother dead. And not just any brother either. He'd shot one of Rex's boys. The only surviving one that he'd claimed from the defunct Rishi Moon outpost.
The heat was on high and everyone he loved and cared for was suffering terribly for it.
From his commanders to the shiniest of shinies. All because he couldn't win against Palpatine. He was in too deep and had no allies that could get him and his men back out of this deep dark pit. At least not any allies that had any real power.
Fox was playing a game that he simply couldn't win. But maybe he didn't have to...
Taking another swig of the flask, Fox contemplated the only logical conclusion he'd reached in the last couple of months, as he'd noticed just how much things had deteriorated. Contemplated this rather outlandish plan of his that was very much a last desperate call to set things right.
It all came back to flimsywork and the world of bureaucracy. Things he hated but was much too intimately familiar with. He'd submitted the performance report a month ago before settling for another round of the waiting game. Detailed what needed to be scrutinised, and omitted what most definitely didn't. His idea was a little out there but not unheard of, especially with the observations he'd dutifully jotted down to back up his decision.
And then there was the matter of tempting the Chancellor with something he couldn't quite resist, which he thought he'd done so beautifully. If he was good at anything besides suffering through logistics and political nonsense, it was nicely baiting a trap of his own.
As soon as Fox made his next move, a few things would change. Hopefully for the better. Not that his men would understand. At least not at first... But it had to be done. He'd made the assessments and he had certainly done his homework. As soon as the report was called in for review to pick his successor, they would very easily concede to his wishes.
Due to the current losses and supposed number of decomms, there were simply not enough skilled guardsmen for it to justify promoting their most veteran commanding officers. Thorn would be barred the position of marshal commander due to both his position as head of the prison force, and his constant requisitioning for escort missions. So would Stone, who was far too proficient in his senatorial guard duties to be pulled aside as a glorified secretary to the Chancellor. And Thire would need to take time off to train a replacement officer to guide the patrolsmen due to having the best knowledge of Coruscant's layout, making him the most effective patrol co-ordinator they had ever had.
And time was not something anyone could spare on Triple Zero.
And, with no one else nearly as experienced or simply far too important in their current positions, that left only one option should the position of marshal commander ever open up: Requisition a trooper just as skilled as Fox himself from another battalion.
Which is exactly what he'd done when he'd submitted the report. Should he be incapacitated or destroyed, command of the Guard would fall to the only person he trusted to be capable of leading them. Or, in Fox's true motivation, that had the actual power to put an end to Palpatine's sick little games.
And the best part? No one would call into question his choice on the matter. He'd waited more than enough after he'd submitted the report for it to register as valid on record, even after he did what he was about to do.
Which is why, as Fox finished emptying his flask as he stood on the very roof of the Senate building, he couldn't help but smile. Smile and wish Cody the best of luck. The bastard was going to need it, especially when Fox knew Palpatine would rejoice at taking something, anything, from General Kenobi who he seemed to so greatly despise.
The neon lights and smell of chemicals and pollution greeted the disgraced marshal commander as he stood at the very edge of the roof. Ready to make a spectacle of this. Ready to set his own twisted little game into motion. Palpatine had won the first few rounds, but he would not be able to best Cody. Not with the reputation he had, nor the esteem he'd earned. Which was exactly what Fox was counting on.
And, as he flung himself forward towards his inglorious demise, he hoped against all hope that Cody's fondness for his general was a mutual thing and not once-sided. If just so his little brothers in the Guard could finally have a chance.
He was, quite literally, taking a leap of faith.

A Fire in May
F is for Fireplace
Ohstars Alphabet Prompts | M | 1,010 words | cw: alcoholism, relapse, light angst/happy ending
---
They don’t light it often, but when they do, it’s always special. Eddie sits on the edge of the coffee table as the wood in the fireplace starts to ignite. It’s a useless fire, more for aesthetic purposes than any life saving warmth, but that’s not exactly the point either. There’s no need for a fire in the middle of May, just like there was no need for Eddie to go three towns over to a chain bakery to pick up a pie when Steve owns a bakery. His husband is the best damn baker he’s ever met, and yet he picked up a pie on the way home anyway.
The wood crackles in front of him as the kindling starts to settle. It should be good to sit for a moment, which as Eddie looks at the massive clock (a wall clock, mind you, no grandfather clocks allowed in this home) is right on schedule. Steve should be home any minute now from his meeting.
It’s been a tough few weeks, probably the toughest they’ve had in years. Things are getting better now that the bakery is out of the seasonal rush (even if Steve is knee deep in event and wedding season, he claims it isn’t as stressful) and their insurance finally closed out the ticket from the accident last fall. Wayne’s finally moved in and settled, resting in his room as Eddie gets everything ready for tonight. It’d been a fight to get him to move in, to leave that little trailer back in Indiana and move out west, but eventually (and after a close call with a near tumble off his porch) Wayne decided he’s too old to live alone.
Everyone’s finally doing okay, there are no major stressors within the Party or their own little family, but it’s still tough. Even without Eddie’s car getting t-boned (in a parking lot, by the way. He wasn’t even driving it!), the bakery being what it is (a headache and a half if you ask Eddie — he tried the whole small business thing and his tattoo shop tanked after a year, but Steve has a better handle on things and the years of experience under his belt Eddie didn’t have), or even Wayne’s health, none of it would have mattered.
Not when Steve relapsed back in March.
He’d been five years sober, a month shy from earning his next chip, when it happened. An ill-timed tattoo convention took Eddie away for a weekend, on the anniversary of Eddie’s second run-in with the Upside Down. It’s been years since it reared its ugly head, but every now and then the anniversaries make it harder to forget. Usually, Steve handles them fine, has plans in place to get through all five of his anniversaries so he doesn’t drown in the bottle, whether Robin or Eddie’s available or not. And according to Steve, he did them. He tried so hard, but all it took was one nasty online review of the bakery on the wrong day while Eddie was out of town to throw it all out the window.
Eddie had found him passed out on the bed, empty bottle of vodka still in his fist.
And now, Steve’s back in meetings three nights a week, working on his gold chip in just a few days time. They’re working through it together, with Eddie going to his own meetings twice a week — once for Al Anon and another for NA.
But tonight was Steve’s solo meeting, so Eddie took the opportunity to do something special.
He hears Steve’s car pull into the driveway as he’s fixing their plates. Eddie sets down the plates in their usual spots and hurries to the living room, right as Steve walks in.
Steve pauses, magnified eyes focused on the burning fire in the living room as he sets down his keys. “You built a fire?”
“I did,” Eddie says as he drifts into Steve’s space.
“Why?”
Eddie adjusts Steve’s glasses and helps balance him as he takes off his shoes. “You said you were homesick,” Eddie explains as he guides Steve to the table, “and I know your mom loved to use her fireplace-“
“And ours reminds me of hers,” Steve finished with a love stuck smile. “Eds,” he starts.
“If you’re about to say I didn’t need to do this,” Eddie interrupts, “then don’t. It’s nothing extravagant but I made us dinner and ordered your favorite pie from—“
Steve kisses him, forceful and tender all at once. “I love you,” he whispers when they pull away.
“I love you too,” Eddie says. He brushes back Steve’s peppered hair and kisses his forehead. “Let’s eat so we can snuggle by the fire. I made your favorite.”
“Are those flowers?” Steve asks as they separate, moving as a unit toward the dining table.
There’s a bouquet of multicolored flowers that Eddie doesn’t know the names to, and neither does Steve but he’ll be asking Robin about by morning, on the table. Usually they have the paper flowers their niece made them as the centerpiece, but Eddie retired those to the office for their impromptu date night.
They enjoy their meal in peace, playing footsie under the table as they share bits and pieces of their day. When they settle in front of the fire, a record playing softly and the dishes in the dishwasher, it’s like time slows down with them.
“You really didn’t have to do this,” Steve says as he leans into Eddie’s chest. Usually he’d be the big spoon, so Eddie’s taking every chance he gets to hold Steve close.
“I know, baby love.”
“I’m glad you did though,” he admits.
Eddie kisses the top of his head. “Me too. I think we both needed this.”
Steve hums, but doesn’t say anything else. He doesn’t need to, not when they’re both on the same page. The battles are never over and tomorrow will bring its own stress and headaches, but for now, and for always, they’ve got each other. That’s all that matters.
