ok so my vpn subscription is about to renew in a few months and i want to change does anyone have a good recommendation that they personally use and work well. if anyone says expressvpn im deleting my account btw
#i use(d) cyberghost bc when a few years ago i was looking for a vpn it was the cheapest and after trying it for the free trial#i was like alright its good and it doesnt fuck with my wifi speed too bad so i bought the two years subscription#and then like a few days later expressvpn got sold to kape technologies and everyone started complaining bc theyre super shady with data#and i realized that cyberghost was owned by the same company and i was like FUCK.#so i was like alright wtv ill use it til my subscription ends and then ill change#also. for some reason. and thats a pretty recent development. when i try to install cyberghost on my xfce ubuntu boot it doesnt work??#it worked fine on windows AND it worked fine on my old xfce ubuntu boot on my old computer#like im not sure why but it installed like halfway except it 1. wont complete the installation bc a config file is missing. BUT.#2. i cant delete it and retry to install it bc i just get the same error message that a specific config file is missing 😭😭#which is kind of super annoying.#i tried the free version of protonvpn bc ppl said it was good but it just fucks with my wifi speed so badly it makes my computer unusable#so when i want to do smth necessitating a vpn i just boot windows (which i HATE)#anyway. anyone has vpn recs

One thing I really love about seedy anime websites and YouTube mp3 converters is like. They actually do what they say they’re doing. But they WILL try to trick you into downloading a virus. Like it’s almost just a greeting at this point. I try to extract a song from a YouTube video and it says free VPN installer tonight perhaps? Free VPN installer tonight queen? And I say YouTube-mp3 converter you sly dog, you know what I’m here for. Show me the goods. And YouTube-mp3 converter says ahhh you got me, no getting one over on you. Thought it was worth a try tho. Here you go king x

You can stream almost any movie or tv show (usually with subtitles) for free on anything that can run a web browser by visiting fmovies.to
If the ads are egregious then get an ad blocker. It's easy to do if you're on desktop. If you're on mobile then Firefox supports ad blocking, but Chrome doesn't. You can still block ads while using Chrome on Android though by installing Adguard.
If you want a higher quality and local copy of a movie or show then install a torrent client (I use Deluge) and find an active torrent for whatever you're looking to download. You can find torrents by going to 1337x.to, searching, choosing on of the top results, and then clicking the magnet link. If the magnet link doesn't automatically open the torrent in your torrent client then right click on it, copy the link, and past it into it (how you do this will probably vary slightly depending on what torrent client you're using).
You can also find movie torrents at yts.mx (which I like using just because it's a nice spot for browsing new releases when I'm not looking for anything in specific).
If you're worried about getting in trouble for torrenting (in canada ISPs are legally required to pass along any threatening copyright notices that they receive for your IP address, but you can and should just ignore these notices) then (instead of paying for a VPN) the website seedr.cc will torrent things for you and give them to you as regular downloads (that way your IP address isn't exposed to anyone other that seedr) (using it also means you won't need to install a torrent client). You don't get much space, but you can get more (without paying) by referring people (who also don't have to pay).
Running a random torrented windows executable can be sketchy sometimes, but you aren't going to get a virus from a pirated movie or song or a console video game rom.

The Marquess's Guide to Internet Safety in the Wake Of This Fucking Election
This guide assumes you have basic to moderate tech literacy. Step 1. Install Firefox. Uninstall your other browsers. (NOTE: You can willfully skip this step unless you are using Chrome, but it is AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you are using Chrome, DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! CHROME MIGHT AS FUCKING WELL BE SPYWARE!) Google is also a piece of fucking shit anyways. If you are mentally capable, you should fucking ditch it entirely. Step 2. Add and configure the following extensions AT MINIMUM: Privacy Badger / uBlock Origin / LocalCDN Step 3: These extensions are optional, but helpful: Twitch Adblock Guide (using Tampermonkey) / KeepassXC Browser (for step 5) / Kill Google AI Overview with uBlock Origin (read through comments, info in main post is incorrect) / Hide Google AI Overviews in extension form / SponsorBlock for Youtube Step 4: Acquire a VPN and install it on all your devices possible. Mullvad is pay-as-you-go with a flat 5$ = 1 month of VPN. You top up your account/"buy time" with this rate. They have a whole host of ways to pay, including privacy-friendly. You can also use Proton VPN free on one device at a time, but, I cannot exactly recommend it over Mullvad. Mullvad refuses to cooperate with authorities; Proton VPN will. However, Proton VPN is based in Switzerland, with some of the worlds strongest privacy laws. Mullvad is based in Sweden, whos laws allow for VPNs to never log any information (so they don't). It's ultimately up to you, and what you can afford. Proton also offers other secure services such as email and cloud storage. Step 5: REMOVE ALL YOUR FUCKING PASSWORDS FROM YOUR BROWSER. Install KeePassXC. Follow this guide to export your passwords from your browser into KeePassXC. You can link KeePassXC with the browser plugin if you wish to use it. KeePassDX is a mobile app built off of KeePassXC and you can import your passwords to it, too. Step 6 (OPTIONAL; COSTS MORE THAN 5$): It's Pi-hole Time. Pi-hole is a DNS sinkhole that protects your devices from unwanted content completely and entirely using a Raspberry Pi. Beginner Setup Guide Step 7 (OPTIONAL, BUT I DON'T SUGGEST SKIPPING IT): Get Malwarebytes and it's associated Browser Guard. Paying is optional if you run scans regularly, but I highly suggest paying for premium. Step 8 (OPTIONAL): Wanna go even farther beyond? Try r/Privacy's wiki. If you choose to follow all but the optional steps, you will be pretty secure. However, you can go even farther than what I have listed. Be warned that opening this link is not advised for people with paranoia issues (but if you still want to..... have a grounding technique ready)
We cannot help you with any questions you have personally; we simply crafted this guide to be followed. Please turn to your search engine of choice if you have any issues/questions.

🚨🤯 This NEW LAW gives the government access to all the data on our devices, including cell phones, smart watches, smart cars/tvs, anything "Smart" even alarm clocks, Ring and home security apps.
It would be a crime to use a privacy device, and if you use a VPN, you could get 20 years in prison and a million-dollar fine on the say-so of the Secretary of Commerce. The bill would remove the right to privacy for all internet users, and the government could freely review, prosecute, and take possession of personal information without permission.
The Restrict Act (S. 686) is a government bill that would allow the federal government to review and prohibit certain transactions between persons in the United States and foreign adversaries, including any acquisition, importation, transfer, installation, dealing in, or use of any information and communications technology product or service. The bill is vague and gives the Secretary of Commerce the power to decide if a transaction involves a foreign adversary, without any input from Congress. This could lead to the government silencing free speech with little effort.
A corrupt government could use this bill to control the population and remove freedom by accessing personal information, silencing free speech, and punishing those who use privacy devices or VPNs. The bill would give the government authority over all forms of communication domestic or abroad and grants powers to "enforce any mitigation measure to address any risk" to national security now and in any "potential future transaction."
Politian's Responsible (remember the names, they are enemies of the people): Mr. Warner (for himself, Mr. Thune, Ms. Baldwin, Mrs. Fischer, Mr. Manchin, Mr. Moran, Mr. Bennet, Mr. Sullivan, Mrs. Gillibrand, Ms. Collins, Mr. Heinrich, Mr. Romney, and Mrs. Capito. 🤔

getting around academic paywalls for papers, and sometimes books
if you have already found a paper or book you want to read, here's some ways to get behind the paywall. researchers do not get any money from publishers of academic papers so many of them will be very happy to give you a copy of their work if you email the academic in question.
the first method maybe blocked in some countries so you may need a vpn. i rec protonvpn, which has a free plan that does not keep any logs.
1. Using SciHub (reliable, but hasn't got many new papers)
a. On a desktop/laptop device
Install the SciHub X Now extension. Clicking the icon of the extension on most academic paper pages leads to it automatically reloading that page with a pdf version of the paper if it is available.
On Firefox:
On Chrome (please switch to firefox if you can! Chrome is set to block adblockers and extensions like this soon.)
b. If you're on a mobile device
Find the DOI or digital object identifier (a persistent identifier or handle used to uniquely identify various objects, standardized by the ISO.) It looks like a bunch of numbers with dots and slashes separating them a bit like this: 10.1109/5.771073.
Go to https://sci-hub.se/ and paste the DOI in its search bar.
2. Using Nexus (new papers and books! better search but is a little slow and buggy)
Nexus is a newer project that borrows logins from users with institutional access, it also aggregates other shadow libraries like libgen so you can find books as well.
a. Telegram Bot: If you already use telegram, the nexus search bot is very intuitive. Copying the name of the paper will do a decent search.
https://t.me/science_nexus_bot
b. Using the website: Has pretty good search, paste the name, authors, DOI whatever you want.
there are extensions that work similarly to schihub-x-now but they don't have a lot of users and are a bit experimental so I will not be recommending them here.
#open access#piracy#resources#tutorial#how to#my mom signed up for a correspondence course with a research component#i realised most people don't know how to get around academic paywall

Hey so if you’re an American who wants to watch The Newsreader, whatever you do, do NOT install a VPN on your computer or phone and set it to Australia. Especially do NOT create a free account on ABC iView and feel free to just put your actual address because the computer won’t care as long as your IP says you’re in Australia. It totally won’t work.
And if you have an Amazon Firestick, do NOT install your VPN on your Firestick and then follow these instructions on how to install ABC iView so you can watch it on your actual TV.
These are very dangerous things. Do NOT do them!
#kayli talks#the newsreader#anna torv#dale jennings#also do NOT feel free to DM me to ask if I just have the episodes saved#because I totally don’t

Saving Activist Andrey Gnyot. VPN Protest. Charity Lecture by a Political Philosopher.
You are watching the news from the weekly rally at the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. Today is August 24, 2:30 PM.
Since the end of last week, Belarusian and Russian activists have been holding a protest demanding that Belarusian activist Andrey Gnyot not be extradited to dictator Lukashenko. On August 21, Andrey and his lawyers shared the details of his case on the European Radio channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-upcgkIwWSA
On August 25 at 2 PM, we will gather in front of the Serbian Embassy in Lisbon at Rua de Alcolena 11. https://www.facebook.com/events/1043644033328903/
If you cannot come, please take photos with posters and send them to us at [email protected].
Sign and share the petition that could help Andrey in the Serbian court. https://www.peticije.online/slobodazaandreja
Also, support the fundraising for his legal defense. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-andrey-gnyot-save-his-life
We believe it is important to support Andrey because we understand the problems that dictator Lukashenko creates for Belarusians. Recently, with great difficulty, the rock band Bi-2 was saved from deportation to Russia. https://www.change.org/p/thailand-free-bi-2-rock-band
Currently, Russian citizen Vladislav Arinichev is under threat of deportation from Croatia. The reason is that Putin labeled him a "terrorist" and "extremist" for his anti-war statements. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU2JQ9NArqo
In April, Novaya Gazeta Evropa reported that Rosfinmonitoring is adding both people suspected of terrorist activities and, for example, employees of an Orenburg gay bar in a case about the alleged "extremist LGBT movement" to this list. This list already contains more than 14,000 people, including well-known journalists, politicians, and theater figures. https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2024/04/02/s-nachala-2024-goda-spisok-terroristov-i-ekstremistov-rosfinmonitoringa-popolnilsia-na-rekordnye-669-chelovek-17-iz-nikh-nesovershennoletnie-news
Back in 2018, Novaya Gazeta reported how law enforcement agencies find "extremism" in social media posts. https://novayagazeta.ru/articles/2018/08/21/77560-etot-spisok-grazhdanskaya-smert
In the Freedom House Internet Freedom Rating, Russia ranks fifth from the bottom, while Belarus is seventh. https://freedomhouse.org/countries/freedom-net/scores?sort=asc&order=Total%20Score%20and%20Status
On August 23, the director of the "Internet Protection Society" Mikhail Klimarev reported disruptions in the work of Telegram, WhatsApp, and Viber. https://t.me/zatelecom/28739
On July 26, he shared two working methods for bypassing the blocks and slowdowns of YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbTGhCYFIsY
These are the Ceno Browser and VPN generator. https://censorship.no/ru/download.html https://t.me/vpngeneratorbot/?start=BrSh2607
The Telegram channel "Tech Talk" published a link on how to purchase Amnezia VPN while bypassing the blocking of their main site. https://t.me/ru_tech_talk/543
They also provided instructions on how to connect MTProxy, which helped with Telegram blocking in 2018. https://t.me/ru_tech_talk/544
While Russians are protesting by installing VPNs, Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov burned the files of Russian draft dodgers at the Sudzha military registration and enlistment office, calling them "smart people." One of the comments under this video reads: "One Ukrainian soldier helped these people more than their native Russia." https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qaeEidnquCE
On August 27 at 7 PM, we will hold a charity lecture on what a revolutionary situation is. The lecture will be given by political philosopher Ilya Budraitskis. We recommend registering using the phone number listed on the poster so that we can better understand how many viewers will attend. https://www.facebook.com/events/1021147643042506/
We are holding this event as part of our regular support for the Netherlands Orphans Feeding Foundation, which works to return stolen Ukrainian children. If you can't come, please make a donation from home. https://www.every.org/orphans-feeding-foundation/f/help-us-return-the-deported
Proofs and links are in the description. Subscribe and help!

You have to provide photo ID now to access PornHub in Montana.
Searches for 'free VPN', 'porn pirate websites' and 'rule 34 porn' have skyrocketed already. Personally, I got around this by... using the same internet connection I always have. I am not kidding, I didn't even install a VPN, my connection is just continually producing an IP address stating I'm in Wyoming (I live four hours away from it) and so I never had to do anything.
Friendly reminder in Montana, you can be married, with a judge's approval, at the age of 16.
So you can be fucked by an adult at 16, but you can't look at PornHub until you're 18.
Make it make sense...

hello c: i am a baby adult (over 18 tho) and i would like to learn how to torrent and perhaps also jailbreak please help
havent jailbroken anything in a long time so cant help too much there. Torrents however, amazinglyspicy's torrenting post or /r/piracy's megathread are a great way to start.
The basics though are:
Get a VPN (I use proton's atm, have to have the paid version for p2p/torrenting, but there are free ones out there)
Get firefox all set up with Ublock origin (getting rid of ads and the like eliminates most fake download buttons)
Get a torrenting client (I use qBittorrent)
Find torrents on a trusted site (can be found in the links I shared above, /r/piracy has a great list, I mostly use 1337)
I generally prefer Magnet Links over directly downloading the torrent file. I usually connect to more peers and dont have a bunch of torrent files to clean up later. The option will almost always be right next to the general torrent download.
If you stick to trusted sites and services your chances of running into trouble are pretty slim. Your torrenting client will tell you what files are in a torrent before you download it and you can catch most funny business just by looking at that. For now avoid torrents with EXE, APK, and ISO files until you are more comfortable and knowledgeable. That makes torrenting games and software harder but basically nukes the chances of downloading and installing something nasty on your comp/phone.
In addition to torrents there are tons of ways to pull movies/music/etc from the sites that are hosting them. Big fan of JDownloader 2 for stuff like YouTube videos and the like. (thank you @skinslip for turning me on to it, its been soooooooooo useful)
and last but most important PLZ SEED!, at least 24hrs after you finish downloading. Others seeding is what lets you download it in the first place, so share the love!
good luck and welcome to the high seas! 🏴☠️
