Tumblr media
...
Drawing was my greatest love when I was a teenager.
While other girls may have been into make-up, or drama, or gossip, or boys... I'd stay in and draw, paint, sketch. Name it, I've tried it at least once. I was an unusual girl growing up. Girls at that age were interested mostly in the hobbies listed above, while I loved the exact opposite: drawing, reading, listening to music, learning languages, playing with dogs, studying like there was no tomorrow.
At university, I chose Graphic Design. And I loved it. Learning about my favorite thing in the whole wide world, filling in the gaps of my abilities, picking up new skills... that felt like heaven. I got out of college with my head high, amazing grades and an even better graduation. Although I wasn't prepared for the world outside. Soon enough, I started struggling to pay rent, especially in a city like Madrid. And I had no choice but to give it up.
Then, I met the Professor. A man just as unusual as me, who just so happened to have saved my life right there and then. The first heist was a success. I worked well with the gang, and given my love for working behind the scenes, I was the negotiator. Raquel was a very interesting individual, but I didn't get to speak to her much, as the Professor was the leading voice of the heist. It didn't bother me at all when they got together, to be honest I was rooting for them. When it all ended, I took my share of the money and went to live in Japan. It was beautiful: the perfect balance of modernity and tradition, the amazing food, the beautiful views, the friendly people, the new language. Every little detail fascinated me.
A year later, I came to know that Rio got kidnapped. And there I was again, back into the heist business. Once again cast as negotiator, this time I had to take the upper hand, because the Professor and Lisboa had their own part of the plan to take care of.
...
Current day - during the heist
I rested my feet onto the table of my hideout as I watched the TV intently. The news channel finally gave me important information: Rio was in Spain, finally. The poor boy took a tumble down the plane, falling on the ground in handcuffs and dirty clothes. Poor thing, I thought. Behind him, a figure emerged, a red-haired pregnant woman in a white coat and black cap. Inspectora Alicia Sierra. I found myself unable to tear my eyes from her face, as if I was in a trance: she was a very attractive woman, there's no denying that.
I wanted to remember that face while talking to her, so I was quick to reach for a pencil and paper and start reproducing her face. I glanced at the TV once in a while to get an idea of what she was like, memorising her traits as I transferred them on the paper sheet.
...
I pulled on my headphones and lined up the microphone to the side of my face, trying to calm my nerves before talking to the woman I was pining for a few hours ago. I picked up the drawing I made earlier and used it as a reference to draw her from other angles.
"Professor." A female voice spoke. Calm, collected, confident.
"Inspectora Sierra, how lovely to hear you." I replied, mirroring her tone.
"Ah, señorita Akita. I wasn't expecting you." Alicia said. "Well? Aren't you going to ask me what I'm wearing? I'd say it runs in your gang to play games like this."
"I'm assuming maternity clothes. Tell me, is it a boy or a girl?" I tantalised, running the pencil on the paper to make a rough sketch of her face.
She chuckled. "My, my, nosy girl. I didn't remember the Professor being this curious, but between you and me, sweetheart, I like you better." She clicked her tongue, presumably paired with a wink.
"Touché, preciosa," I shook my head, laughing at her attempt at flirting. "That's enough niceties for now, you can flirt with me later. Let's cut to the chase."
There was a long pause after she laughed in shock at my bluntness. I smirked, almost too proudly for my first conversation with a pregnant woman I've seen once on the TV. During the pause, I kept my eyes trained on the rough piece of paper while my wrist made a flicking motion to draw her strands of hair.
"I'm assuming your dear sister is having the time of her life. I don't think you've escaped to Germany. We could find her in a heartbeat, you know. I could barely picture it, a 17 year old girl thrust in the midst of rapists, drug users, murderers in the jails of, say, Northeast Asia? Ah, the poor thing. So young and so naive, the spat image of you, she wouldn't last a beat." She chuckled humourlessly.
"And what's your point, Inspectora? Your empathy for my little sister doesn't add up to when you tortured Rio, does it?" I didn't even bother to look up from my work as her threat was no longer valid. My little sister died of cancer last month, and the news hadn't reached Spain. That offered us a very good advantage.
She ignored my comment. "Akita, listen to me very carefully. Turn the Professor and Raquel in, and your sister remains untouched. Think about it, sweetheart. And think quickly, I am a busy woman, as you know."
"I most certainly do, señora Sierra." I said innocently, in a stupid but successful attempt to tease her.
"It's señorita now, actually." Alicia corrected.
"Good to know," I mirrored her flirty attitude from before. "On second thought, you were right, how foolish of me. What are you wearing?"
"You're impossible, Akita," she replied, laughing. "Don't get any ideas, sweetheart. I'm way out of your league."
"Oh, yeah?"
"Yeah."
I gasped in mock offense, making her laugh genuinely. "Well, am I mistaken or am I actually growing on you? I bet you wouldn't be upset about being out of my league if that was the case."
"Shut up, sweetheart." She said mischievously.
"Make me." I teased her.
Her playful scoff was interrupted silently as she suddenly hung up.
I was confused for a moment as my hand moved the pencil confidently on the paper. As I stroked the graphite onto the rough surface, my mind wandered. Alicia was flirting shamelessly with me, in front of all her colleagues, and in a recorded phone call, no less. So either she was really brave or really stupid. Maybe a mixture of both.
This woman was really mesmerising: she was incredibly intelligent, as I could tell, she was confident, sarcastic, dominant and gorgeous. She was brave for raising a child on her own, as she specified that she wasn't married.
If the circumstances were different, I'd even go after her. I wished I had met her differently, because this woman was far beyond average and just about the quickest crush I've ever gotten. She was certainly not someone you'd want to lose. I wanted to talk to her again, leaving out our positions in this makeshift war. It seemed like we were getting along perfectly, flirting with each other as if the call wasn't recorded.
I took my hand away from the drawing and looked at my finished product. I was extremely proud of it: it looked just like her, the lines were confident and creative and the shading in a cross-hatching technique was on point. I bet she'd like it, I thought. My eyes lifted from the paper as I got an idea. Maybe she would.
Aikido, my Akita Inu, looked at me quizzically and tilted his head, almost as if questioning my decision. "Who knows? Maybe this will be what wins her heart." He yawned in response. "Oh, shut up, Aikido."
...
It had been a few days since I sent the drawings to Sierra, and apparently it went over well. The next time we negotiated she asked everyone to leave the tent and didn't confront me about the drawing, but rather she got friendlier: she started to open up, telling me things about her, showing her soft side, laughing, being careless, even saying that we'd meet one day. Of course, she loved the sketch, but we were still enemies, enemies who were intensely pining for each other and instead of doing something about their attraction they played games from a phone call and flirted shamelessly. Because acting on things was the most difficult thing you could ever do in your life. It requires courage, determination, confidence, and given the circumstances, you needed double these qualities.
And I was getting brave these days. And also a little crazy.
So I started sending her a sketch every other day to tease her. One day it was a sketch of her, the next of Aikido, the next of the police tent, the next of her holding the teddy bear.
It continued like this until she sold out the Government and started working alone. First she stopped by Sergio, which ended up in the ultimate team-up as they were on their own and Raquel was finally out of custody and in the bank. Then she left the Professor alone for a while.
...
I heard a knock on my door and Aikido got up on his feet, startled. I carefully stepped closer and tried to take a peek. My eyes caught a flash of red that I'd recognise anywhere, I immediately knew that was Alicia. I quickly opened the door and she looked at me, almost fazed. After a few seconds, she smiled at me, and said, "I promised you we'd meet, one way or another." I chuckled, moved, and let her in immediately. The second hideout of the heist was none other than my own home, a detached house in the middle of nowhere that the Professor was able to get me. It suited me perfectly, there was room for me and Aikido, hell, it even had an atelier.
"Welcome to my home, Inspectora," I said as she took in her surroundings.
"You don’t have to call me that anymore. Just 'Alicia' will do, sweetheart," she replied, a smirk playing on her lips. I gazed at her sweetly, meanwhile surprised at how my attraction to her had grown from a small infatuation to a full-on crush, and realised she didn't have a baby bump anymore.
"You-you gave birth?"
"Yeah, I did. In the stormwater tank."
"That must have been... uncomfortable."
"Sweetie, I had to blow a Saint Bernard out my ass. It would have been uncomfortable even on a hospital bed."
I couldn’t help but laugh at her joke, and soon enough she joined in. "So, is it a baby boy or a baby girl?"
"Girl. I named her Victoria." She said.
"That's a lovely name." I smiled at her.
"Speaking of names," Alicia leaned back on the table and gazed at me, her tantalising green eyes twinkling with mischief. "What's your name?"
That question took me off guard, as I almost tripped over my own feet while holding a glass of water.
She chuckled at my antics. "Somebody got flustered."
I cleared my throat. "Keep telling yourself that, Alicia." I loved how her name rolled off my tongue so easily.
"So you're not answering?"
"Not for the time being, no," I clicked my tongue and winked at her, mocking her for the first time we met. "I like being called Akita."
"Like the dog?" She asked.
"Actually, like the city. But yeah, also like the dog."
As if on cue, Aikido trotted inside.
"Oh, yeah, this is Aikido." I said briefly as Alicia offered her hand for the dog to smell.
"How adorable, you even have an Akita Inu." She noticed, chuckling when Aikido rubbed himself on her legs for pets.
"Wow, he never does that with anyone," I said in surprise. "Maybe he has a good feeling about you."
"Well, I have the blessing of your dog now, so we can't go wrong, can we?" She joked, scratching his weak spot. Soon enough, she even got his leg going.
"He really must love you," I laughed. "Usually he's very cat-like, I'm surprised he's actually asking to be petted."
"Well, I tend to grow on people." She said charismatically.
"Yeah, you do." I mumbled. "Hey, why don't you get comfortable? I'll make dinner and we could watch something."
"Dinner sounds great, thanks," she sighed in relief and I led her to the couch.
"What do you feel like having?" I asked her.
"Whatever you want, sweetie. Your house, your rules." She replied.
"Okay." I hunted through my fridge, hoping to find something good. I found a few eggs, and enough stuff to make salad. "You must be tired after giving birth and running away from the police. I'll make you something to restore your energies."
"Yeah, it was quite the drama. I've barely had time to breathe," she rested her head on the back of the couch at an angle where she could look at me. "You know, you draw really well."
"Oh, thanks." I accepted the compliment.
"Where did you go to art school?" She asked.
"Madrid Academy of Art," I replied. "How did you know I went to art school?" I immediately felt stupid after asking that question.
"Well, a ton of things gave you away. First of all, your proportions in the sketch of me you sent me. Obviously, your choice of media and type of paper that go well together, and the fact that you used binder to keep the sketch's lightfastness in a quantity that was balanced as to avoid damaging it. Then the smaller things, like your posture, the way you sit, the way you hold things, your hands, your eye for observation, and of course, the unmistakable smell of paint coming from over there..." she pointed at a room on the other side of the house. "...which I assume is your atelier."
"Wow, you're good," I laughed in shock. "And yeah, that is my atelier."
Alicia hummed in satisfaction. I turned around to check on her and she was looking at me in a different way now: her pupils were dilated and she was making puppy eyes at me, batting her eyelashes while pouting. Her eyes asked the question.
"You want to see the atelier?" I asked her, surprised.
"Yeah, I'd love to," she replied.
"You have beautiful eyes," I blurted out, and immediately cringed internally. Maybe I shouldn't have said that.
I heard her get up from the couch and silently step elsewhere. Since I couldn't hear her anymore, I turned around to check on her and found her in front of me in a heartbeat, hovering over me while my back hit the counter. I swallowed thickly and tried to hide my blush, but she noticed right away. Alicia grazed my face with her fingertips, starting at my cheekbone and trailing down my jawline. Her fingers brushed my neck for a split second, sending a shiver down my spine. Then her thumb slowly traced over my bottom lip, her eyes flickering to my eyes and back to my mouth. Her intelligent eyes asked for permission to kiss me, and I gave in without thinking twice.
In a second, Alicia brushed her lips against mine tentatively, with hesitation. She checked on me to see if I was okay, and that was all she needed. Without a second thought, she crashed her lips on mine more eagerly, her hand resting on the back of my head. I cupped her cheek and kissed her back with the same amount of desire.
She pulled away and leaned her forehead on mine, sighing in content. I licked my lips and gazed back at her, clearing my throat out of embarrassment. "That was, um... that was good."
"Good." She said.
The next few minutes were quiet. I cooked while she kept her eyes trained on my every motion, as if to make sure I didn't get hurt. When dinner was ready, I prepared our plates and took her to the couch. She sat down next to me, thanking me for the food. I put my feet up on the table and she followed suit. I turned on the TV, and she looked for a movie to watch together.
"This one?"
"This one."
The evening was quiet. We ate our food, which she really appreciated, by the look on her face, and Aikido stole a couple of pieces as well. About halfway through the movie, Alicia leaned her head on my shoulder, snuggling her body into mine. I froze in place, taken off guard by the action, but honestly I kind of like it.
"Is this okay?" She asked me, noticing the look on my face.
"Of course," I smiled at her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer to me. I pressed a kiss to the top of her head and felt her melt into the embrace.
"Your hug is so amazing," she sighed. "It makes me feel safe."
My heart leaped out of my chest at that. "You are safe, honey," I kissed her temple lovingly. "I promise."

The Season of Nightingales
Tumblr media
The first of many weekly chapter updates!
Summary of Work:
In this nice and accurate prophecy of what might emerge after affection’s seed is planted with a kiss, the Second Coming looms large. Aziraphale must keep his vow to fix Heaven before it’s too late, without asking the impossible from Crowley. As the effort is complicated by unexpected friends, an ex-Inspector Constable, a guileful Metatron, and a Heavenly floor full of the blessed dead — Aziraphale and Crowley find navigating their relationship is not mutually exclusive from saving the world from Armageddon.
Chapter 15 - The Book of Life
Chapter Excerpt:
“Raquel,” said Aziraphale, a bit unsteadily, “What…”
“The Book of Life,” she explained from a few paces ahead of him. “The Blessed Dead are about ten floors beneath us, the lift here will take us there. My office is…” she trailed off, seeing his distraction. “I’ll leave you to it.”
“Yes,” he said, without glancing back. “Thank you. I can make my own way from here.”
Distracted by this unexpected calling, he did not notice Raquel loitering beside the open lift, watching with a sort of baffled wonder as the Supreme Archangel began to actively approach the sacred text.
Aziraphale’s eyes, aimed in reverence down the great hall, glittered with its reflection. Subtle gilding on the filigree of the upper arches glinted with light from indefinable sources. The clouded path was warm to the touch as he raised his hand into it. In a trance, as if he were being called toward the other end by a voiceless siren, he stepped forward.

Palermo lit up a cigarette.
The sunset was magical. He looked ahead. Sometimes the magical sunsets were the saddest. His mind wandered to Andres. Then, to his surprise, it moved to Helsinki.
He missed the Balkan bear, he realised it only now with a painful clarity. He had screwed up. The bitterness in him spread, and the unpleasant feeling intensified. Guilt. Something he rarely experienced and he thought he was rid of that damned feeling forever. He got to know him in those few weeks. He had a simplistic view of things. He had been through a lot, too much, and had turned to the simple things in life. He was loyal and protected those he loved with all his might. Martin swallowed hard. Damn, had he gotten sentimental at that age? He would give anything now to show him this dark orange and purple sunset from this porch, here, so close to the sea on the island and share the cigarette with him. But he was alone.
Until a figure quietly approached him.
He nodded back.
“Do you want to continue? Analysis, I mean.”
It was difficult for him. He would never admit it, but it was hard. He looked at her and his heart sank. She didn't deserve it.
She was not like them. She was one of those “normal ones” who didn't hurt others. Who loved - purely, completely, Until death. And Sergio, in his stupidity had involved her in something that could have cost her her family and her life. And she had hurt. The idiot didn't see what he had. And how lucky he was.
Raquel shook her head.
“Not now,” she said. The soft, calm tone surprised him.
In their previous conversations these days here in Palawan, there was something in her voice that gave it an edge. She was worried, she was
walking on the edge of circumstances that had exhausted her.
Now her voice was velvety again. He had heard her speak like that. Only to him. A low, melodic sound that caressed the ears and soothed the heart. A voice of a woman in love. Where had that come from? His cynicism usually would take over and some ugliness would invade his thoughts. Andres would have understood him. He had the same inclinations. Love was a romantic idea, but just that - an idea. In reality, it was ugly and carried torture, and pain, and jealousy. It was a bitter feeling, and the mere mortals, the common people never realised its power.
He handed her the cigarette. The weed was something else.
She shook her head and smiled.
He had seen her smoking before with the girls. Suddenly the serious inspector had transformed into a party girl, singing and dancing furiously. But now he refused.
“Okay. Tomorrow then?”
She nodded. He had observed them. Back in the monastery. Andres’ little brother, and that woman. What a combination. What had she seen in him? She was something else… She was confident, out there, smart and sexy at the same time. She could’ve had it all… And she chose Sergio. Back then he thought he and Andress were night and day. It didn’t make sense. The police inspector didn’t fit there. She wasn’t a stupid criminal to fuck up her life by taking risks and seeking danger, her life was within the rules, and she could fit anywhere. None of the Band could fit in the normal life, or what people called a normal life. She was intelligent, educated and good-looking. She had great social skills. Why the hell was she here? He was aware she didn’t like him. When they first met, he felt her eyes on him, she was reading him, forming an opinion, probably an old habit from her work, or the usual mistrust women often display. It happened fast and Martin thought he had no time to mess with her. There wasn’t a question in her eyes. Later it was confirmed. While she didn’t express it openly, there was always an annoyed look on her face when he was around. For a long time, he would act as the biggest ashole around them. He didn’t care about them. And he wanted to stay that way. For him they were losers. Idiots, he would be bored within a week or two, even if he tried to be polite. So he didn’t. The women usually found him infuriating. Including her. But it was worse. When she heard him speaking, the mild annoyance grew into disgust. And he enjoyed her outrage. Again and again, he would aim his worst jokes seeking a reaction. But he noticed something else. Sergio glared at him with annoyed looks too. He never did that before with Berlin. Sergio would be uncomfortable in some moments but he would laugh it off. Now every time Martin said something about the women, Sergio would throw him a venomous glare. Briefly, almost unnoticeably, but it was there. The nerdy boy had developed a new habit - he was protecting his woman. Martin’s curiosity about her grew bigger. Several times they clashed. Until Sergio got so mad, that Martin experienced the scale of Andres’ little brother’s rage with a hand around his throat and a head shoved to the wall of his bedroom. The quiet whisper to his face and the genuine promise in the words brought fear and admiration. Later on, when he was alone, he would smile. The witch has put a spell on the lonely genius, who avoided close relationships like a plaque. As far as Martin was aware, she owned him. The gang was fucked. Whatever the boy in the hospital pyjama has felt as loyalty for them, now it lies with one person and one person only - the tiny police inspector with the contagious smile. They were fucked. Martin's annoyance almost grew into resentment and hate. But that was back then. At the very beginning.
He turned and looked at her. Her eyes had taken on a golden hue in this light. They were shining. Her skin was glowing.
"Goddess chanced upon the fallen..." crept into his mind.
He raised his hand and caressed her cheek.
She returned the gesture with a smile, tilting her head against his hand.

I've just finished watching Berlin
and I liked it more than I thought I will, so I will rant a bit. What is this show even about?
Heists? Checked. But it is not exactly about a well elaborated heist like LCDP. Those who start watching it expecting specifically that will probably be disappointed. The heist is pretty much just a setting where the characters and their traumatic romantic experiences exist…. Which, surprisingly, wasn't as bad as it sounds written like this.
Romance? Checked. This show is a bit like a commentary about the various faces of romantic love and it did it pretty well imo. And this comes from someone who in general dislikes blatant cheesyness. The only part which annoyed me was that a certain woman proves to be far too doe eyed even at the end of the story when she should have been raging… uhm… similarly to a certain other woman who kind of did the same through the whole of LCDP, so… yeah, let's don't get hung up on this.
Problematic main character? Checked. Initially I was sceptical about this spinoff. Although, I can understand why they probably chose Berlin. Pedro Alonso makes a good lead. Although his character is not doing too much leading in the series… And Berlin was both appealing and problematic, which is a good mix for a show. In this series though, he is only problematic… and very annoying. He was such a narcissistic, insensitive, asshole even in his "golden days" that I was actually cheering for the police to catch him, and throw him into jail. Don't get me wrong, I like the problematic characters, Zulema Zahir ended up being one of my favorites, and I liked her character even more after her spinoff, but it's the exact opposite with Berlin. (Nothing against Pedro Alonso, again, he does his job well.) And that's the point probably, to call him out on his bullsht, but the guy is still infuriating. Even if I'd watch another season with him.
Interesting people in the team? Checked. This was actually a nice surprise, which I didn't expect at all. In contrast with Berlin himself, I liked all the new characters! I might even say that more than most of the team members in LCDP.
Capable inspectors to put up with the team? Checked. (Ok, we all know who wins this cat and mouse game, so that's not even the point.) BUT they have so little screentime! When we found out that Najwa Nimri will be in the series too, and especially when they used her and Itziar Ituno to promote the show my enthusiasm for it grew exponentially. And then I felt let down. I would have loved to see Najwa in a lot more episodes than the two we got with her… This is the biggest negative aspect which I can complain about. But if I am honest, I would have preferred an Alicia+Berlin or Alicia+Raquel backstory as a spinoff, but that's another thing. (Unlike Camille, Alicia would have kicked Berlin's a** for sure.) But I am glad that we at least had her, and Raquel too, in the series. I hope the creators of the show know that there are quite many people who ended up more interested in the series because these ladies made a brief appearance in it.
Pretty visuals and nice music? Checked. I loved the sunny Parisian/French scenario in the show.
I don't want to be too strict with this series, because I enjoyed it so complaining about it would be hypocritical. The only negative thing I'd emphasise again is: Not enough Alicia Sierra!
And they have to make another season just to make Andres interact with Alicia. I wanted that so much!

Back to the Garden by Laurie R. King
Tumblr media
Laurie King is immensely talented. I have read 20 of her mysteries now, and every single one is different. The details and characters are so intricately twined around the plot. Her books never start to fall into a pattern or a rut. The only thing they have in common is complex characters and a climax that leaves you on the edge of your seat. If you like mysteries, give King a shot.
This book is about a police inspector, Raquel, and the history of a family estate turned event venue. There's a serial killer, a 70's commune, dope, rock bands, and a sliver of a romance.
This was a good book, but it was just that. Which I feel bad saying, but it's not an insult. The book truly is exciting, and I couldn't put it down. It was easy to read, easy to follow, suspenseful, and neatly written. But, as a fan of King, it didn't quite stand out to me like some of her other books, hence the 3.5 stars. An entertaining read, but by no means the best I've ever read.
I also felt the ending was rushed. Abrupt climaxes after a long build up followed by a shot resolution is a classic King move, but this one was a bit too fast for my taste. I felt that maybe 50 more pages at the end to wrap things up would've improved this book. That being said, knowing her writing patterns, I believe that there might be a sequel in the makings for this book. And if it does come out, it might make the quick resolution of this book seem better.
That being said, the characters, as always with King, were out of this world. They were so real and flawed. I looked up the artist Gaddo from the book, only to find she was made up! Every character has a story, a past, feelings, thoughts, and emotions. Not just the main characters. It makes this book, and her others, invigorating.
No one writes London better than King, but she also makes semi-northern California and the estate fantastically vivid. A relaxing and beautiful place to contrast the dark past and undertones of the book. Throughout it's history, the estate changes design, but the beauty of the house and garden stays the same.
I would definitely recommend this book. I wouldn't say it's a book that everyone needs to read, but if you are looking for a good book, check this one out. As I said, it's entertaining and a nice read. It keeps you busy, and when it's done, it's done.

anon frēond asked for Sergio/Raquel and it took too long because i always overthink things sorry.
1. What made you ship it?
the tipping point at which i went from “ah, yes, the narrative is leading me to believe these people will be romantically involved” to “Help, I Am Emotionally Compromised By These People Being In The Same Scene And/Or Talking To Each Other” was when raquel tells sergio about her husband’s abuse in 1x04. raquel is just so vulnerable and real and brave and earnest, and then so utterly surprised by this complete stranger not only believing her but also offering to help her. and obviously the dramatic irony is that we know it’s part of the con, except double dramatic irony because it’s also very much not part of the con. while the professor might have come up with the idea of approaching the inspector as salva to get close to her, sergio is the one who’s beginning to realise just how much he’s underestimated this woman. she’s not just a chess piece to him anymore, not just inspector murillo, but a whole person who’s suffered and continues to suffer under the same system he’s trying to fight.
his face when she puts her hand over his just does something to me. he reminds me of a domesticated animal that’s not feral but also isn’t used to human contact. when someone touches an animal like that, its reaction is exactly like sergio’s: freezing, surprise, confusion. usually the animal will very slowly start to relax when it realises there’s no ill intent in the touch. sergio doesn’t get to that stage because ángel interrupts them, alas. but the way sergio then yanks his hand back as if he’s done something wrong is a very interesting reaction in and of itself. and we know raquel is also feeling some things because when he pulls away, she looks confused and hurt until she notices ángel. (does it seem like i’ve watched the scene many times? because i’ve watched the scene many times.)
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
as i wrote recently: if you'd told me back in november that i'd become deeply emotionally invested in a relationship that starts off with subterfuge and deceit, then progresses into them chaining each other to pipes and holding one another at gunpoint, finally culminating in the promise of happily ever after, i would've rolled my eyes hard enough to sprain them. on paper the premise is so far away from what i value in relationships (equality, trust, a complete lack of stalking), that if i'd known about it i probably would've never watched the show.
and i’m so glad i did watch it because it’s one of those rare examples of how good writing makes the unexpected compelling. the very relationship dynamics i ordinarily don’t like are exactly what i love about this ship entirely because of the complexity and nuance of their treatment. trust is my #1 favourite thing and the story of sergio and raquel’s relationship is nothing less than a tour de force exploration of trust in all its permutations. they’re two damaged people who are caught unawares by a bond that grabs them and won’t let go. they have this instinctive level of trust in each other right from the start, and even in their worst moments together, even when they don’t believe they can trust each other, they want to, and even when the trust seems broken, on some deep unconscious level it remains intact. i have a lot of feelings about this!
(like, okay, it’s entirely deliberate that their first conversation in 1x02 and their final conversation in 2x08 both include the question “can i trust you?” and are essentially the complete opposite of each other in every single aspect. just those two exchanges in and of themselves represent an entire essay about the characters and the journey of their relationship mediated through the concept of trust, and i’m such a nerd that i could actually write that essay because i live for this stuff.)
my #2 favourite thing is a woman arriving in a guy’s life and tearing it wide open then mending it just by existing. that pretty much describes every f/m ship i’ve ever had and these two are a particularly concentrated and superb example of the genre. also lbr they are Very Pretty together.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
honestly, i don’t feel that i know enough about the popular opinions in LCDP fandom to know what’s unpopular. one thing that i’ve noticed, though, at least in a lot of fic i’ve encountered, is the idea that sergio should have punished alberto in some way in order to avenge raquel. for me that’s a hard no. whether or not sergio has thought the situation through, or just instinctively understands it, the fact that he doesn’t take it upon himself to take any action against alberto post-heist is absolutely the best thing he could do for raquel. an abusive relationship strips you of your self-worth, your autonomy, your confidence in your ability to make good decisions. so as difficult and painful as it is for raquel to have to handle all the alberto-related shit herself, someone else just sweeping in and “fixing” it for her (without her knowledge or consent) would simply be another instance in which she’s deprived of control of her own life. now, if at some point sergio asked her if she wanted him to do something about alberto and she said yes, that would be absolutely fine because she’s in charge of making the decision herself. but taking that opportunity away from her is exactly what alberto did and, no matter how well-intentioned sergio’s actions would be, ultimately it’s the same thing.
