Fans Confused After Alison Victoria Lists ‘Dream Home’ For Sale. Wait. Her GA loft didn't sell, and she was supposed to be selling that to finance a new place in the Cabbagetown section of Chicago. Now, I'm confused, too. Anyway, this is an ugly ass building. The 4bd, 3.5ba, property is listed for $3.5M. Let's have a look (if you recall, Alison is the designer who did the "Ugliest House" I posted yesterday.)
Tumblr media
Victoria worked to transform her office space into a residential home, which she envisioned as “the biggest, the baddest, the sexiest live-work dream home I could ever imagine.”
Tumblr media
Although she’s called it her “Dream Home” home for several months now, fans online noticed that Victoria is quietly planning to part ways with her live-work space. What is going on?
Tumblr media
She has posted photos from her dream home as recently as April 9, just before the building hit the real estate market. Well, I like the muted green chairs and planters. The floor is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland.
Tumblr media
One fan brought the home’s listing to an HGTV fan community on Reddit, where other users chimed in with their thoughts about the sale. (I'm an avid Redditor.)
Tumblr media
“I thought she was building this to be her dream home/workspace? Or was this always to sell right away?” one fan wondered, with another guessing in response, “In reality it was always just content for her show.”
Tumblr media
So, that's just a mantel with candles, then.
Tumblr media
“I don’t think many people would be interested in buying this but it might work for someone who has a business and can live on the premises like what she claimed it was intended for," said another fan.
Tumblr media
"I think more than likely it would be an event space esp for a wedding w/the option to stay overnight," said a 3rd fan.
Tumblr media
Interesting wall with the big niche for decor, oven and 2 wine fridges.
Tumblr media
One user pointed out in the comments, “There are no windows! I’d go crazy ! No, the sky lights not enough." Yeah, it's like an underground house.
Tumblr media
Shoot, no matter how nice it is, I like the lighted shelving, no windows is a deal breaker. I'd feel imprisoned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interesting en-suite.
Tumblr media
“The closets are full of clothes and shoes. Not staged stuff, real stuff," said a fan.
Tumblr media
Nice little home theater lobby with a snack counter.
Tumblr media
This is it? I was expecting a home theater, not a TV room.
Tumblr media
Interesting light strand in the powder room.
Tumblr media
Long hall to the wide industrial stairs.
Tumblr media
One of the other bedrooms. I can't deal with just skylights, I gotta see what the weather's like and all.
Tumblr media
One of the other baths. My love of floating sinks is kind of leery of something this big. I feel like it would break loose eventually.
Tumblr media
"The mudroom looks like it has a little kid's jackets or maybe they’re just tiny women’s jackets. regardless, it looks like Alison or a family is living there. Interesting,” another fan pointed out.
Tumblr media
Exercise depresses me enough, let alone doing it in this room.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna say that this is the work area, where the team gathers to discuss design. Interesting that this is the area that has the windows.
Tumblr media
The garages in the back of the building.
Tumblr media
I'm no designer, but this building wouldn't have appealed to me as a home/work space. I would look for an end unit with more windows.

I was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, so this story resonates deeply with me. Way too many of my high school friends died young from heart and lung diseases easily traceable to the crud in the air we all breathed for years.
Excerpt from this story from the Chicago Tribune:
The “Dirty Steel, Dangerous Air” report details the national and local health and economic costs of steel industry pollution. Industrious Labs released the report on Monday.
Industrious Labs is an environmental organization focused on cleaning up industries through network and capacity building, research and analysis, and data-driven campaigns, according to its website.
The 44-page report found that coal-based steelmaking contributes to an estimated $13.2 billion in health costs, 892 premature deaths and almost 100,000 lost school and work days annually, according to a news release from the organization.
“Steel communities have been sounding the alarm on harmful air pollution for years, and this report quantifies just how devastating and far-reaching the consequences are,” Hilary Lewis, steel director at Industrious Labs, said in the news release. “The EPA has consistently failed to safeguard the health of these communities from the dangers of coal-based steelmaking. It’s time for stronger regulations that recognize the opportunity of cleaner steelmaking technologies and tougher enforcement of penalties on polluters to truly protect public health.”
The report focuses on 17 facilities nationwide, including four plants in Northwest Indiana, each of which are owned by U.S. Steel or Cleveland-Cliffs.
In addition to steelmaking, the report looks at the harmful effects of coke, a processed form of coal used in steelmaking.
The steel industry accounts for more than 90% of the market demand for coke, according to the report, which called coke a “very dirty fossil fuel.”
The product is made by mixing coal with oil or water and heating it at 2,000 degrees for many hours. Coke requires dozens of large ovens to be made as well, according to the report.
Industrious Labs’ report also found that most residents in Gary are in the top 10% of U.S. residents most at risk for developing asthma and at risk of low life expectancy.
The city is home to U.S. Steel’s Gary Works facility, which could potentially receive $300 million for its blast furnace if a deal between the company and Nippon Steel is approved.
The $300 million investment will allow for higher steel production and reduced emissions, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said in a statement. The furnace should have its life extended by up to 20 years.
Some residents, including those who are members of Gary Advocates for Responsible Development, have concerns about the investment.
Carolyn McCrady, member of GARD, said the only way for the steel industry to grow in “a healthy way” is to get rid of blast furnaces. McCrady believes in the use of direct reduction furnaces, which she calls more environmentally and economically friendly.
Direct reduction furnaces could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by half and produce about 20% of steel nationwide, McCrady said.

Been a while since I uploaded story shots, and I loved playing this household so much, even more than in my original Naruto themed save where I wasn't happy with the build. I love the Cyberpunk AU version of them! And my build (Evergreen Harbour) So I haven't played Growing Together a lot, I found that Roxanne (their baby) just cries the whole time no matter what even if nothing is wrong, especially when sleeping which was a bit annoying. But once she is a toddler she is ok. So the story is that Konan and Pain (not Nagato or Yahiko, in my AU version) are like living in a abandoned factory building. Pain likes to (or had to) do illegal stuff like selling substances but he does it so that Konan can live doing her passions. She loves to do handcrafts including flower arranging (there was no origami so I chose to make her arrange white flowers), juice brewing, canning (Icemunmun's mod is soo cool) candle making etc. It is very profitable and sells at the market, but they wouldn't have got this far if Pain didn't do what he does. He wants to expand without getting into dangerous territory in Night City with all the gangs and crime out there so keeps it low scale, but is thinking of forming a gang called Akatsuki ;) (the question is should I make some other members lol, I would love to make a cyberpunk Itachi <;3)
The reason there is so much Froggy stuff is because of this:

Ghost In The Machine
Leave it to human ingenuity. Or perhaps I should say corporate genius. It seems that for every process, law, or method, there is a hack to work around it. Never mind that things were probably good enough the way they were. It’s just that, in our zeal to have an edge over others, we look for the loopholes.
Like all of the ghost kitchens and virtual brands we have discussed earlier this term. While I lauded them early—and correctly so—for leveraging their physical locations so they could test out new concepts and menu items on Uber Eats, DoorDash, and others, it has now become apparent that some of these players have simply duplicated their menus and slapped on a different brand name just so it could grab another line on the list of restaurants we see on our phones.
And now Uber Eats is fighting back, saying that in order to get those multiple listings, the virtual brand must have at least a 60% different menu. Who would have thought it would all come down to this?
But it is a good response from Uber Eats, because they have been taken advantage of in all this by those restaurants and ghost kitchens—which we define as an establishment with no indoor seating, and often located in an industrial park or even parking lot—who are trying to simply boost their odds of making online sales.
Whoa. That may very well qualify as the longest sentence I have written this semester. But I digress.
Tumblr media
It is fair conclusion jumping to agree that the kitchens being accused of such chicanery are just being smart. They can try different price points, names, and a slew of other marketing variables, without having to actually create new products. And they are betting that most consumers will never notice. Just imagine, though, a Little Caesars—for example—also selling Bigga Pizza Pies, but they all come out of the same oven with the same crust, sauce, mozzarella, and toppings. Could you tell? And would you even care?

Uber Eats, et al., all want to make money, to be fair, but they do not want their service to be scammed like this. Getting two listings is little different form somehow managing to wrangle two display ads in a newspaper when you bought one, or any number of other of duplicative examples.
But wait, there’s more! Uber is also raising the bar on those it does list, requiring each establishment to have at least a 4.3 out of 5 rating on their app, have fewer than five-percent of orders canceled, and have fewer than five-percent delivery and order errors.
Thus far, Uber has removed more than 5000 entities it attests are simply clones of their parent, finding, in one instance, that a New York deli had 14 such clones under its umbrella. Can you imagine submitting 14 resumes for a job, each with a different name, but the person were the same? Shakespeare said a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but that doesn’t work so well in job hunting or restaurant listings.
Uber says, though, it counts 40,000 virtual listings. Its internal police department is going to have its hands full enforcing its latest policy decision.
I know. You’ve probably already started thinking of a new hack in the wake of Uber clamping down. Why not simply give different names and/or plating variations so that the items are still pretty much the same, but look different on your screen? That would likely be easy. Imagine a meal of the Monster Burger and French Fries also being listed under a different brand as the Hamburger Monstre and pomme frites. Pretty much the same thing, but one sounds so cosmopolitan and worldly.
I’m pretty sure the ghost kitchens are already preparing their workarounds, because that’s the way we all roll. The spoils go to those who can hack the best. Meanwhile, just be careful placing your food orders. You might just be a victim as well. I can see that international burger fetching a higher price tag if only because it uses French words.
And I can imagine you looking like a ghost when you find out you’ve been duped, too.

My Writing About Musk Isn't About Musk
It seems like I've been writing a lot about Musk. Objectively I, and most other writers have been. I cannot speak for others, but for me Musk is just an object lesson in the bad part of startup land.
I've been around startups since I was a teenager. I've seen so many gallons of toxic startup BS. Musk embodies all of it, in a neatly name-recognizable package. But he's just a repeating story of the same old nonsense.
My digipal @naynerz shared a draft of something she'd written about a particularly absurd requirement in many companies hiring processes. It's an excellent article and I'll let her publish at the time of her choosing. Reading her draft caused me to rerun an article from October with my takeaways from a bad startupish job listing.
https://masonpelt.substack.com/p/a-business-lesson-from-a-bad-job
To sum the article up in bullet points:
Founder/CEOs often scale way past their capacity to manage but stay super protective of the company.
The skills and approach that allow founder's to build, often complemented by delusional confidence and dumb luck, rarely scale with the organization.
When someone doesn’t know what they don’t know, the human tendency is to develop irrational proxies to evaluate.
Last month I had a job interview with a startup that was so bad I've written three articles about how not to conduct a job interview. The articles will likely end up published on my own channels because startup media has basically vanished. It seems like most startup coverage now begins with $100 million and 200 employees.
https://twitter.com/masonpelt/status/1598915778174033922 In August I wrote that Musk's flippant disregard for his contracts to acquire Twitter showed that smart contracts aren't really possible.  I didn't have to search for an example of a startup that owed money to my company. I just used the example where A Twitter cofounder was an investor.
https://hackernoon.com/elon-musk-shows-the-limits-of-smart-contracts I have many other stories. I'm still pissed off about being stiffed on petty amounts of money from  startups back when I was 17. My friend @cullen has his own stories of nonpayment as a teenager working with startups. We are not alone, Musk embodies the startup world.
In the context of a long and personal essay about how the behavior of those in entrepreneurship often mirror those with substance use disorders Musk's name didn't come up once. And yet, I shared this article with people because it explains much of Musk's behavior.
https://pushroi.com/examining-entrepreneurial-addicting-to-the-ghost-of-a-friend/
The startup space overlaps with the fake guru space heavily. The personalities are often hard to differentiate. But small scale is uninteresting to readers, or worse institutional support is extended to pay the bills.
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/fake-gurus-welcome-online-business-guru-grifter-industrial-mason-pelt/
In that article from 2020, I talked about the Forbes 30 under 30 lists and Forbes Councils as shams. "In 2017, the aforementioned Sam Ovens made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia: Industry, Manufacturing & Energy list. What does a man from New Zealand, selling the secrets to earning six figures, with offices in Dublin and New York City, have to do with manufacturing or Asia?
I’m not saying Ovens bought his way onto the list. But Forbes props up fake guru types with credibility. In fact, undeserved endowment of their trusted brand is built into the business model. Even now, Forbes takes money from people to become members of one of the Forbes Councils. With that nearly $2,000 membership, someone can write for the Forbes site and use the trusted logo on marketing material in perpetuity."
My attack on Forbes was part of why that article ran in the independent Arc Digital, and not mainstream or quasi mainstream tech press. At the moment I have three articles being pitched to editors about the startup world. All mention Elon Musk. Heck, I got a very polite rejection from one editor, because they had too many Musk stories. Fair, Musk, Holmes, and SBF all generate a lot of think pieces, because mainstream news will cover them. The articles are often just a repeating story of the same old nonsense. Only this way, people will care.

The Role of Vacuum Ovens in Advanced Materials Processing: Enhancing Quality & Durability
In the field of advanced materials processing, ensuring precision, quality, and durability is essential. One of the key tools in achieving these goals is the Vacuum Oven, a highly specialized piece of equipment used in a variety of industrial and research applications. These ovens play a crucial role in processes where controlling the environment is critical, such as drying, curing, and degassing materials. By removing air and moisture, Vacuum Ovens help to maintain the integrity of sensitive materials and enhance their performance.
Vacuum Ovens are commonly employed in industries that work with electronics, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, and automotive components, where the highest standards of quality are demanded. The controlled environment inside a Vacuum Oven allows for precise manipulation of temperature and pressure, which is particularly important when working with delicate materials like polymers, metals, and ceramics. The vacuum environment prevents oxidation, contamination, and moisture absorption, ensuring that the processed materials retain their optimal properties.
Tumblr media
One of the key benefits of Vacuum Ovens is their ability to accelerate processes like drying and curing. In traditional Industrial Ovens and Furnaces, drying processes can take a considerable amount of time due to the constant exposure to air. However, in a vacuum, the boiling point of water is lowered, which enables faster removal of moisture from the materials being processed. This speed and efficiency are critical in industries where time-to-market is essential.
Moreover, Vacuum Ovens enhance the durability of materials. By preventing the absorption of moisture and contaminants, these ovens ensure that the final products are not only of high quality but also resistant to degradation over time. This is particularly important in sectors such as aerospace, where components must endure extreme conditions and maintain their performance for long periods.
As part of its commitment to advancing the materials processing industry, HHV Thermal Technologies manufactures state-of-the-art Vacuum Ovens designed to meet the rigorous demands of various applications. The company’s Vacuum Ovens are engineered with precision, offering reliable temperature control and uniform heating, essential for producing high-quality materials. HHV Thermal Technologies also manufactures Industrial Ovens and Furnaces that integrate seamlessly with the broader industrial ecosystem, providing comprehensive solutions for a range of thermal processing needs.
In addition to Vacuum Ovens, HHV Thermal Technologies offers innovative products like their Total Gas Analyzer systems. These systems are critical for the precise evaluation of gas compositions in fuel samples, ensuring that processes involving gases are controlled with the utmost accuracy. Such technological advancements contribute to the overall success of materials processing and demonstrate HHV Thermal Technologies’ dedication to quality and precision.
In conclusion, Vacuum Ovens are indispensable tools in the field of advanced materials processing, ensuring the highest quality and durability of products. By providing a controlled environment that enhances the performance of materials, these ovens are crucial in industries that demand precision and reliability. Companies like HHV Thermal Technologies continue to push the boundaries of innovation with their state-of-the-art products, setting new standards for excellence in industrial processing.

The Role of Online Auctions in the Restaurant Equipment Market
In today’s fast-paced and competitive restaurant industry, efficient procurement of equipment is vital for businesses to thrive. From commercial ovens and refrigerators to specialty prep tables and espresso machines, restaurant owners need high-quality tools at competitive prices. One avenue that has gained significant traction in recent years is the use of online auctions. These digital platforms have revolutionized how restaurant owners and operators source their equipment, offering affordability, convenience, and a wide variety of products. In this blog, we will explore the growing role of online auctions in the restaurant equipment market and why they have become an essential resource for many.
Accessibility and Convenience
One of the major benefits of online auctions is the convenience they offer to buyers. Traditional auctions require participants to be physically present, limiting their ability to bid on items if they are not in the same geographical area. However, with the advent of online auctions, restaurant owners can now participate from anywhere in the world, at any time. This level of accessibility is particularly beneficial for small or independent restaurants that may not have the time or resources to attend in-person auctions.
With just a few clicks, restaurant operators can search for the specific equipment they need, compare prices, and place bids in real time. This ease of access opens the door for businesses of all sizes to acquire high-quality, affordable restaurant equipment.
Cost Savings
For restaurateurs, the cost of purchasing new equipment can be a significant financial burden. Restaurant auction sites offer a cost-effective solution by providing used or surplus equipment at a fraction of the price of new items. Many items on auction platforms come from restaurants that have closed, upgraded, or overstocked their inventory, allowing savvy bidders to find deals that fit their budget.
While buying used equipment might sound risky, many online auctions provide detailed descriptions, photos, and even video tours of the items, allowing buyers to make informed decisions. Additionally, some auction platforms offer warranties or return policies, providing buyers with peace of mind when purchasing pre-owned equipment. These savings are particularly beneficial for startups or expanding restaurants looking to stretch their budget while still investing in reliable, high-quality equipment.
Wide Selection of Equipment
Online restaurant auctions offer a diverse range of equipment, which is one of the key attractions for buyers. Whether you're looking for common kitchen staples like ovens, fryers, and refrigeration units or niche tools like pizza ovens or sushi prep stations, there is an abundance of options available. Because auction platforms often cater to both large chains and smaller, independent sellers, the variety of equipment is vast, covering new, used, and refurbished items from a range of manufacturers.
Furthermore, online auctions often feature specialized equipment that may be difficult to find elsewhere. Restaurant owners looking to implement new concepts or upgrade their kitchen setup can explore auctions for unique or hard-to-find items, offering flexibility in expanding their culinary offerings.
Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices
Another important aspect of online auctions in the restaurant equipment market is their contribution to sustainability. By purchasing second-hand or surplus equipment through a restaurant auction, businesses are actively reducing waste and promoting the reuse of valuable resources. Instead of perfectly functional equipment being discarded, it gets a second life in another kitchen.
For many businesses, especially those focused on sustainability and eco-friendly practices, this form of procurement aligns with their mission. The environmental impact of manufacturing new equipment is significant, and by opting for auction purchases, restaurant owners can reduce their carbon footprint while also saving money.
Challenges to Consider
Despite the advantages, there are some challenges that buyers should keep in mind when participating in restaurant auctions. Firstly, buyers must carefully research the condition of the equipment they intend to purchase. Unlike purchasing from a retailer, items bought at auction are typically sold "as-is," meaning there may be wear and tear, or parts that need replacing.
Shipping and logistics can also present challenges, especially for larger pieces of equipment. Some auction platforms may require buyers to arrange their shipping or pick-up, which can add additional costs to the overall purchase. However, many platforms are beginning to offer integrated shipping solutions, making the process smoother for buyers.
Conclusion
Online auctions have emerged as a game-changer in the restaurant equipment market, offering affordability, convenience, and a broad selection of items that cater to the diverse needs of restaurateurs. As the industry continues to evolve, more and more restaurant owners are turning to online auctions as a viable option for sourcing the equipment they need to stay competitive.
By participating in a restaurant auction, businesses can benefit from significant cost savings, access to unique items, and the opportunity to contribute to sustainability. As this trend continues to grow, it’s clear that online auctions are here to stay, helping restaurants of all sizes acquire the tools they need to succeed.

Introduction:
The aroma of fresh bread, pastries, and cakes fills the air and immediately brings a sense of warmth and comfort. 1. High Demand for Fresh Products
One of the top benefits of bakery business is the steady demand for fresh products. People love freshly baked goods, whether it's breakfast bread, afternoon pastries, or celebratory cakes. The increasing trend of people turning to local, artisanal bakeries for quality products means there’s always a market for your products. Plus, you can target specific niches—such as gluten-free, vegan, or keto baked goods—to cater to health-conscious consumers.
2. Relatively Low Startup Costs
Compared to many other businesses, benefits of bakery business are often have lower startup costs. If you’re starting small, you can focus on basic equipment like ovens, mixers, and display counters. You can easily adapt your offerings based on market trends or customer feedback, allowing you to stay relevant in the market.
Moreover, seasonal changes can bring opportunities for creative new products. Think of custom cakes for holidays, special breads for fall, or pies for Thanksgiving.
6. Scalability and Expansion Opportunities
If you start with a small bakery, you have the opportunity to expand as the business grows. Once your bakery has built a loyal customer base, you can consider opening additional locations, offering delivery services, or expanding into wholesale markets (selling to coffee shops, restaurants, and grocery stores). There's also potential to franchise your business model if your bakery becomes a popular brand.
7. Satisfaction of Creating Something People Love
There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating food that brings joy to people. From birthdays to weddings to simple moments of indulgence, bakery goods are often part of special occasions. Knowing that your product makes people happy can be a strong motivator and a great source of job satisfaction.

Whether you want to operate a small, local bakery or dream of building a larger bakery empire, the opportunities in this industry are plentiful. If you have a passion for baking and a strong sense of business, opening a bakery could be a sweet venture that brings both personal satisfaction and professional rewards.

Let’s hear it for New York, New York! The city that never sleeps, where the streets will make you feel brand new and big lights will inspire you. You won’t go hungry in New York either, as taking a bite out of the Big Apple has always been easy. The city has long been celebrated as one of the great culinary capitals of the world and is well-known for its diversity of iconic foods. But you don’t have to head into the heart of Manhattan to indulge in classic New York treats when you can easily source them at your local Down to Earth farmers market this weekend.
Your Best B.E.C. The B.E.C., which stands for bacon, egg and cheese, is a favorite New York way to start the day. This salty, savory breakfast combo can be ordered at every deli, corner store and bodega throughout the big city and its boroughs. The belly-filling sammy is most often served on a plain or poppy seed roll or bagel and comes wrapped in foil.
The B.E.C.’s origins can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s, when British street vendors sold egg and meat sandwiches on soft rolls to factory workers who needed a quick and hearty meal before their long work shifts. As factories began to appear in the United States, the breakfast sandwich crossed the Atlantic and quickly became a much-cherished New York ritual.
Skip the line at the deli counter this weekend and elevate your B.E.C. recipe with top-of-the-line, locally produced ingredients from the farmers market:
2 rashers Goode and Local By Don Rodrigo Mangalitsa Hickory Smoked Bacon
2 Great Joy Family Farm, SOVA Farms or Stone & Thistle Farm pastured eggs
1 Badass Bagels plain or poppy seed bagel
3 tablespoons Maplebrook Farm or SOVA Farms butter
Plain McGrath Cheese Company cheese curds
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Optional: Simple Fine Foods Spicy Chipotle Squeeze
Coffee…Regular Any self-respecting New Yorker washes down their B.E.C. sandwich with a piping cup of “regular coffee” as an essential part of breakfast. A regular coffee in New York means a short coffee with milk and two sugars. It’s the default coffee of the city because it’s easy to make and quick to order, which best suits the fast pace of life in the concrete metropolis.
Pick up a hot cup of regular coffee from Cano Coffee Company to sip as you stroll through the market. Cano Coffee Company is a New York-based roaster that imports beans from their family coffee estate in Colombia. Their range includes ground and whole bean bold, medium and mild roasts, kcups, and growlers of cold brew.
Slice, Slice Baby Iconic New York-style pizza began when Gennaro Lombardi, an Italian immigrant from Naples, opened the country’s first pizzeria in Manhattan’s Little Italy neighborhood in 1905 serving large, wide pies. The quintessential New York pizza has a thin crust that is foldable yet crispy and is traditionally topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, with any extra toppings placed on top of the cheese.
Enjoy a slice of New York with Wave Hill Breads’ artisanal pizzas that are parbaked for easy prep. Simply remove the plastic wrap and pop them in the oven at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes and enjoy:
Margherita: Italian tomatoes, mozzarella, grana podano, basil
Quattro Formaggi: Mozzarella, gorgonzola, asiago, pecorino romano
Zucca e Limone: Zucchini, mozzarella, grana adano, basil pistou, lemon zest
Salsicia: Italian sweet sausage, sweet onions, roasted peppers
Veggie: Yukon gold potatoes, rosemary, garlic, mozzarella, green onions
In a Pickle? New York City was destined to become the “pickle capital” of the United States after Dutch farmers began growing cucumbers in Brooklyn in 1659. These settlers pickled the cucumbers and sold them from barrels on the street. Without modern refrigeration, pickles provided the early colonists a way to eat veggies during the barren winter months when there wasn’t much else available. When a heavy influx of Eastern European Jews arrived during the late 1800s and early 1900s, they introduced their pickling traditions, along with kosher dill pickles, to New York City.
Get into the New York spirit with a pickle-on-a-stick or a whole container of tangy, briny pickles from Dr. Pickle. The Nadel brothers of Dr. Pickle grew up doing every step of the pickle business while working for their father. Now a third-generation company, they’ve always created their products as naturally as possible, often sourcing from local farms in New York and New Jersey. And while the generations may change, the time-soaked recipes do not.
The Big Oyster When Henry Hudson sailed into New York Harbor, there were miles of oyster reefs stretching in every direction that supported up to half of the world’s oyster population. Huge, plump oysters growing up to 10 inches long could be easily plucked out of the water and eaten fresh like fruit off the vine.
For an entire century, the port of New York was known as the oyster capital of the world, with millions of discarded shells used to pave its roads and make mortar and lime to fuel the city’s building boom. Unfortunately, unsustainable consumption, habitat destruction and sewage pollution decimated wild oyster populations, with the last New York City oyster bed closed for harvesting in 1927. Today, oysters harvested from the coast of Long Island Sound are considered some of the best in the world. Blue Point Oysters are the most famous local variety and have been a fixture on New York City restaurant menus since the early 1800s.
Get your shucking knife sharpened and ready for action and stop by American Pride Seafood to scoop up some freshly harvested Blue Points. The world may be your oyster, but there’s nothing quite like a full-blown, over-the-top New York-style shellfish extravaganza!
Who Let the Dogs Out? Hot dogs are one of the most famous street foods in New York City, with New Yorkers consuming more hot dogs than any other demographic in the country. The classic New York dog is served inside a soft bun with steamed onions and a pale yellow, deli-style mustard.
You don’t have to settle for a ho-hum hot dog when Goode and Local By Don Rodrigo is cooking up their delicious Smoked Bacon Cheddar Sausages onsite at the market! These mouth-watering Mangalitsa pork bratwursts are served on a potato roll with generous toppings of tangy Hungarian sauerkraut and Goode and Local’s very own chili.
Think you need to schlep somewhere for real NYC food? Fuhgeddaboudit! Just head directly to your Down to Earth farmers market this weekend for the freshest, locally sourced and tastiest iconic New York treats. We look forward to seeing you there!

How to Spot Hidden Gems at Restaurant Auctions?
Tumblr media
Restaurant auctions can be treasure troves for savvy buyers, offering an opportunity to score high-quality equipment, décor, and supplies at a fraction of their retail cost. However, the key to making the most out of these events lies in identifying hidden gems—items that are valuable yet often overlooked. Here’s a guide to help you master the art of uncovering such treasures at restaurant auctions.
1. Understand the Auction Process
Before attending an auction, familiarize yourself with how it works. Auctions can be live, online, or a hybrid of both. Research the auction house's rules, preview schedules, and bidding requirements. Most restaurant auctions provide a catalog or list of items beforehand, which can help you plan your strategy and identify potential deals.
2. Research the Items in Advance
Once you have the auction catalog, do your homework. Look up the retail prices and market demand for the items you’re interested in. For instance, a lightly used commercial oven or walk-in refrigerator can save you thousands compared to buying a new one. Hidden gems often include specialty equipment like sous-vide machines or artisanal bread proofers, which are valuable to niche restaurateurs.
3. Inspect During Preview Days
Preview days are your chance to examine items closely. Bring a checklist and inspect the condition, model, and age of the equipment. Check for signs of wear and tear, such as rust, dents, or frayed cords. Some items may look worn but still have a lot of life left, making them excellent hidden gems.
Don’t forget smaller items. Utensils, baking molds, and specialty glassware are often overlooked but can add tremendous value to your business or personal kitchen.
4. Spot Rare or Vintage Items
Restaurant auctions often feature unique or vintage items, such as antique bar stools, rustic wooden tables, or decorative light fixtures. These pieces can add character to your restaurant or home. Look for items that stand out or have craftsmanship that is hard to replicate.
Vintage signs, branded memorabilia, and even unusual kitchen gadgets can be goldmines for collectors or those aiming for a distinctive aesthetic.
5. Assess Resale Potential
Hidden gems aren’t just about what you can use; they’re also about what you can resell. Some items at restaurant auctions are highly sought after in secondary markets. For example, rare kitchen equipment, high-quality knives, or premium espresso machines can fetch a tidy profit if you’re willing to resell them.
6. Focus on Multipurpose Equipment
Items that can serve multiple functions are often undervalued at restaurant auctions. A commercial mixer, for example, might be labeled for baking but can also be used for mixing sauces or grinding meat with the right attachments. Multipurpose equipment offers flexibility and better returns on your investment.
7. Stay Updated on Trends
Certain types of equipment or décor may be in high demand due to current restaurant trends. For example, open-kitchen concepts often require aesthetically pleasing cookware, while the rise in farm-to-table dining has increased demand for rustic or eco-friendly furniture. Being aware of such trends can help you identify which items might become hidden gems.
8. Set a Budget and Stick to It
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of an auction and overbid. Hidden gems lose their value if you pay too much for them. Set a clear budget for each item and be disciplined about sticking to it.
9. Network with Industry Experts
Networking with chefs, restaurateurs, and equipment specialists can provide insights into what’s truly valuable at restaurant auctions. They might point out items you didn’t consider or help you evaluate whether an item is a gem or a dud.
10. Be Patient and Strategic
Finally, patience is key. Some of the best deals are made toward the end of the auction when competition dwindles. Keep an eye on items that initially didn’t attract much attention; you might scoop them up at a bargain.
Conclusion
Spotting hidden gems at restaurant auctions requires a mix of preparation, knowledge, and a keen eye for value. Whether you’re looking to outfit a new restaurant, enhance your current setup, or score unique items for personal use, these tips will help you identify treasures that others might overlook. Happy bidding!
