G20 Summit: India’s Global Assertion
A galaxy of global top leaders are expected to ratify important strategic discussions at the G20 Summit in New Delhi.

India will be hosting the 2-day G20 Summit in New Delhi over this weekend (September 9-10) for which leaders from some of the world's top economies will gather in the city on Friday. After all, the G20 consists of 19 countries and the European Union, contributing about 85% of the global GDP and two-thirds of the world's population. The 19 countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.
The capital city is all decked up to welcome the delegates, especially at the Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan which will be the main venue of this gala event. India has created the slogan "One Earth, One Family, One Future" for this G20 Summit. This slogan perfectly captures India’s underlying philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (the world is one family), which has for the last few months guided India's G20 leadership.
The G20 presidency India assumed on December 1, 2022 has provided the country the appropriate platform to reinforce itself as the harbinger of strategic autonomy in an increasingly geopolitically polarized world. The G20 leadership offered the country the opportunity to showcase the “India story” to the world countering multiple contingencies including global warming, food and energy shortage, terrorism, geopolitical conflict, and bridging the digital divide. This is finally sort of culminating in the G20 Summit this weekend.
The G20 Summit Roll Call: Who’s Coming, Who’s Not
India might have performed laudably during its G20 Presidency throughout the year, but the successes of such diplomatic summits are often measured by the world leaders who are participating and who are not. Often the presence or absence of these leaders leads to strategic diplomatic initiatives either undertaken or shelved.
This weekend too while quite a few top leaders will grace the occasion, a few key absentees has led to speculations about the ultimate efficacy of the Summit. First on the positive side, the Delhi G20 summit will be attended by US President Joe Biden, Britain premier Rishi Sunak, Canada premier Justin Trudeau, Japan premier Fumio Kishida Italy premier Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, South Africa's Presidnet Cyril Ramaphosa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
Not only these leaders control the majority of the global diplomatic permutations and combinations today, they are also vital to India's strategic geopolitical positioning in the world order. No wonder therefore, that on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, many of these leaders have planned one on strategic discussions with the Indian PM Narendra Modi and other Indian leaders.
However, the two key absences of Chinese supremo Xin Ping and the Russian President Vladimir Putin has created more air waves and newsprints at the possible future repercussions globally.Though Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chinese Premier Li Qiang will be attending, many observers feel that the possibility of a top level Sino US discussion has gone and this could even subsequently impact India's position vis-a-vis China and US in this sensitive geography.
Putin's absence (probably to dodge an International Criminal Court warrant) as well as the absence of Ukraine premier Zelensky implies there will be no scope for some sort of reconciliatory meeting between Russia and Ukraine for the first time since the Russian aggression into Ukraine territory. The Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is also likely to skip the G20 Summit.
India is putting up a brave face notwithstanding the absence of Putin and Xinping. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar rebutted, "I think, at different points of time in G20 there have been some Presidents or PMs who, for whatever reason, have chosen not to come themselves. But that country and its position is reflected by whoever is the representative on that occasion...I think everybody is coming with a great deal of seriousness...".
The US also concurs, especially on the Chinese front. “What I think the Chair, India, will encourage them to do what we, the United States and every other member, virtually every other member of the G20 will do, is encourage them to come in, in a constructive way and really focus on problem-solving and delivering for the developing countries," US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan reiterated.
G20 Deliberations and Declaration: India on Top
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend as an observer, along with the heads of the IMF and the World Bank also in attendance. Perhaps this best signifies how today India is expected to give direction to the world to counter terrorism, geo-political conflicts, geo-economical disparities and lead towards creating and nurturing a post-pandemic resilient society. As the global advocate for peace, security and prosperity, India is expected to steer and prepare the world for the future by formulating solutions and initiating dialogues for both ge-political and geo-economical issues.
In an exclusive interview with PTI, PM Modi had already reiterated, “India's G20 Presidency also sowed seeds of confidence in countries of the so-called third world. Africa is a top priority for us in G20; no future plan of earth can succeed without all voices being heard."
India has been leading from the front on the issue of the African Union's membership of the G20. In June, PM Modi wrote to the G20 leaders pitching for according to the African Union the full membership of the grouping at its New Delhi summit. A final decision on the proposal would be taken over the weekend. The African Union is an influential organization comprising 55 member states that make up the countries of the African continent.
At the end of the summit, a declaration will be adopted stating all the leaders’ commitments towards the priorities discussed and agreed upon during the respective ministerial and working group meetings. Under India's year-long presidency, the G20 groups have centred discussions around providing more loans to developing nations from multilateral institutions, reforming international debt architecture, regulations on cryptocurrency and the impact of geopolitical uncertainties on food and energy security.
The G20 ministerial decisions taken across all domains throughout the year are likely to prove to be pivotal for the world's future. “We will continue with constructive contributions well past our G20 Presidency. Inflation is a key issue faced by the world, our G20 Presidency led to the recognition that anti-inflation policies in one country do not harm others," PM Modi further informed.
The thorn on the side has been the Russia-Ukraine conflict. So far this year, the G20 bloc has failed to issue any joint statements as it is deeply divided over language referring to the war in Ukraine. While Russia and China are against blaming Moscow for the war in Ukraine, Western countries including the United States, France and Canada have sought a strong condemnation as a necessary condition for a joint statement. The situation looks unlikely to be resolved this weekend too and this will be an uncomfortable legacy India will hand over to Brazil as it assumes the next G20 presidency.
G20 Summit Impact: Delhi Stalled over Weekend
While the G20 Summit organization in Delhi would definitely add a feather to India's cap globally, it would definitely create disturbances with normal life in the national capital over this weekend. The Delhi government has issued a gazette notification on September 5 detailing traffic restrictions in the national capital ahead of the weekend.
According to the notification, vehicles including goods vehicles, commercial vehicles, interstate buses, and local city buses, will not be allowed to operate on Mathura Road (beyond Ashram Chowk), Bhairon Road, Purana Quila Road, and inside Pragati Maidan Tunnel from midnight on September 7 until 11:59 PM on September 10. However, goods vehicles transporting essential commodities such as milk, vegetables, fruits, medical supplies, and others with valid 'No Entry Permissions' will be permitted to enter Delhi. Whatever justifications might be outlined, there is little doubt that this will seriously affect citizen movements in the capital for 3-4 days.
In addition, the entire area of New Delhi District will be designated as "Controlled Zone-I" from 5 AM on September 8 until 11:59 PM on September 10. The area inside Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg) will be considered a "Regulated Zone" during the same period. This means that only authorized residents, emergency vehicles, and vehicles traveling to the Airport, Old Delhi, and New Delhi Railway Stations, as well as other authorized vehicles, will be allowed to use the road network in the New Delhi District during these hours.
During the summit on September 9 and 10, establishments in the New Delhi area, including Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, will remain closed for the public. Dhaula Kuan, Khan Market, Janpath, and Bhikaji Cama Place have been designated as "sensitive areas," but no markets will be shut; movement will be regulated instead. Moreover, Cloud kitchens and delivery services will notbe allowed in the New Delhi area during the summit. However, essential services like grocery stores, ATMs, and medical stores will remain open in the regulated zone.
No TSR (three-wheeled shared taxi) and taxi services will be permitted to enter or operate within the New Delhi District from 5 AM on September 9 until 11:59 PM on September 10. However, all types of commercial vehicles, including buses already present in Delhi, will be permitted to travel on Ring Road and the road network beyond Ring Road towards the borders of Delhi.
Delhi Police has also outlined a series of restrictions on online delivery services in Delhi during the upcoming Summit. These restrictions will be in effect from September 8 to 10, with exceptions made for essential services, such as postal and medical deliveries. During the summit, the delivery of essential medical items, including lab reports and sample collections, will be permitted throughout the city and ambulance services as well will remain operational.
While no commercial activities will be allowed in New Delhi district during the G20 Summit, the restrictions will not affect the regular operation of metro services in the city, except for the Supreme Court metro station, which will be temporarily closed from September 8 to 10.
Delhi Metro is incidentally selling ‘Tourists Smart Cards’ to visitors at 36 stations from 4-13 September. Anticipating the footfall of passengers, the card is available in two categories. Either with one-day validity or three-day validity cards with both offering “unlimited rides” in the metro network.
The one-day validity Tourist Smart Card costs ₹200, whereas, the three-day validity card comes for ₹500. This amount also includes a refundable security deposit of ₹50. The 36 stations where these cards are being sold through dedicated counters include Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Lok Kalyan Marg and Supreme Court metro stations among others.

Fascinating Story of Idli, The Healthiest breakfast
Idli is the healthiest breakfast in India. This blog is about the fascinating history of Idli.
Idli is derived from the word “iddalige,” claims famous culinary historian and scientist KT Achaya. It was originally stated in a piece of Kannada literature by Sivakotyacharya titled Vaddaradhane in the year AD 920. Idli first appeared as “iddarika” in a Sanskrit encyclopedia called Manasollasa in the year 1130. According to the text, it is “made of fine urad flour formed into little balls and then flavored with pepper powder, cumin powder, and asafoetida.”
Achaya also refers to the fermented dish known as “kedli” from Indonesia, which is a close relative of the idli, the healthiest breakfast. He said that several fermentation techniques were transmitted to South India by the South Indian chefs of Indonesian rulers who had returned home to look for wives.
Subsequently, there was debate among scholars and food historians as to how idli came to be. Elizabeth Collingham, for instance, attributes idli to Arab traders who settled along the coast of South India.
She claims that because they were unsure where they would get halal food, they opted for steamed rice cakes with coconut chutney. It appears that blending rice and urad came considerably later. It might not have been an imported practice at all but rather something that developed in one of the southern states.
Idli is very typical and the healthiest breakfast item for Indians everywhere, regardless of where it originated. So, it is not surprising that six years ago, a passionate Chennai-based idli caterer by the name of Eniyavan made the decision to designate a day for the common breakfast served in South Indian homes.
He decided to prepare and supply 1328 different types of idlis on March 30 in honor of International Idli Day. Government staff cut a 44-kg idli on the same day to declare March 30th to be International Idli Day.
Idlis has developed into a local specialty in South Indian states nowadays. a favored, highly desired healthy breakfast!
Comfort food
It has evolved into comfort food for many throughout time. Idli is a go-to whether you’re feeling under the weather or just want something light. It is also quite easy to make. You’ll need fenugreek, salt, thick beaten rice, par-boiled rice, and urad dal. You are ready to produce soft and fluffy idlis following a few hours of soaking and fermentation.
The regular idli has undergone various changes, leading to numerous variations, including Gujarat’s “dhokla.” Idli is now also available in ready-to-mix varieties with flavors including beetroot, carrot, and even chocolate.
They are typically made with perforated molds because they enable even the cooking of the idlis. Before pouring the batter, some chefs line the container with a thin, moist towel. The fabric makes it possible to remove the idli from the mold right away after steaming rather than having to wait a few minutes for it to cool in the mold.

Although it has been a staple of our diet for a while, the food is a wonderful discovery for westerners because it is vegan and gluten-free. In fact, so much of south Indian food is already vegan that we don’t really notice the trend.
However, Idli offers a variety of nutritional advantages that make it the healthiest breakfast. A study examined several breakfast foods nationwide. The study examined the nutrient profiles of four major cities, including Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Idli, one of the most popular breakfast items, was found to have the best profile in Chennai.
According to a survey by Uber Eats, it is the most often requested breakfast item.
It gives you lots of carbohydrates, fiber, and protein. In fact, one idli has eight grams of carbohydrates, two grams of protein, and one gram of fiber. It also contains a lot of iron.

Vegan Recipes for 2023
Veganism has become increasingly popular in India in recent years. A vegan diet excludes all animal products and byproducts, in addition to any foods that involve exploitation or cruelty to animals. In principle, a vegan diet is a pure plant-based lifestyle that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, seeds, grains, and nuts. Sarita Bazaz, Founder of The Food Affairs, of the top 5 catering companies in Delhi offering luxury food services in India uses the start of the year as an opportunity to unveil the idea of how veganism is an emerging movement that is gripping the globe by sharing some of the most delectable vegan recipes to try out!
1. Chia Pudding
A chia pudding would be an attractive option to the conventional breakfast of toast or oats. Chia seeds are grains that are rich in nutrition and energy. Thus, a small portion of it could offer you a strong, stimulated start to the day.
Ingredients : 3-4 tablespoons chia seeds, 1 cup milk, and honey. Recipe: Inside a large bowl, mix the chia seeds, milk, and honey. Allow it to settle for 10 minutes before giving it another gentle stir. Allow the pudding to thicken and cool. Let the pudding settle for at least a few hours (or overnight) in the refrigerator. Jaggery Granola is a natural source of proteins, dietary fiber, and critical nutrients, and it is packed with a richness of healthy seeds, jaggery, and cinnamon flavouring to make the meal hearty, delectable, and crunchy.
Ingredients: Oats, coconut powder, pistachio, a few sliced almonds, jaggery, maple syrup, blackcurrant, glazed cherry, and salt. Recipe: Set aside the oats after roasting them in a large pan until they turn golden brown. Then, separately, roast the nuts and seeds in the same skillet with a tablespoon of oil until lightly browned and set it apart as well. Heat the jaggery in a wide, deep-bottomed pan over low heat until fully melted. Mix the roasted oats into the jaggery in the pan till thoroughly blended. To avoid burning, keep stirring the mixture consistently. Add the nuts, blackcurrant, and seeds and continue roasting on low heat until the jaggery caramelizes and the granola turns a dark golden brown. Now add the remaining ingredients to the mixture and mix well. Take it off the stove and stir all of the ingredients together for another minute. Lastly, let the Granola cool completely before transferring it to a sealed container.
3. Apple Cake
Apple cake is a light, soft, spongy recipe made with whole wheat flour that keeps the taste buds delectably intact and leaves the body feeling light after consumption.
Ingredients: A touch of salt, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg powder, and 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder. Recipe: Mix together all the dry ingredients. Then, to the dry ingredient combination, add half a teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of baking powder. Set aside the dry ingredients after sifting them twice. In a blender container, combine 2 cups sliced apples and 3/4th cup raw sugar to make an apple puree. Add 1/4th cup oil to the puree, followed by 1/2 cup water and either almond, cashew, or coconut milk. Finally, add a tablespoon of lemon juice and stir until all of the ingredients are evenly mixed. Now add the sifted dry ingredients with the wet ingredients and pour the mixture into the baking pan. Keep in the microwave for 10- 15 mins and the fresh delight is out and ready to eat!
4. Roti Jala
Roti Jala, which translates to “net bread,” is inspired by a fisherman’s net. This is a healthy and light evening snack when served with the traditional stew, Moong Bean Salad, Spicy Sambhal, and Pachadi. The roti was revived in an Indonesian cultural context to complement and be used with other traditional food dips.
Ingredients: 2 cups flour, 1 cup water, 1 cup coconut milk, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon turmeric, and vegetable oil as needed. Recipe: Whisk together the flour, water, coconut milk, eggs, salt, and turmeric in a medium mixing bowl until well blended. Poke three holes in the cap of a plastic water bottle using a paring knife or fork. Fill the bottle halfway with pancake batter. Over medium heat, gently oil a saute pan. Invert the water bottle swiftly and spray the batter in quick circular motions to make a netlike design. Allow one to two minutes for the pancake to cook. Don’t flip it and keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t burn. Take off the pan, fold in the sides, and roll up. Serve with gravy and enjoy.

California ponders slow growth future (AP) In 1962, when California’s population of more than 17 million surpassed New York’s, Gov. Pat Brown celebrated by declaring a state holiday. In the coming days, when the U.S. Census Bureau is expected to release the state’s latest head count, there probably will be no celebrations. Over the past decade, California’s average annual population growth rate slipped to 0.06%—lower than at any time since at least 1900. The state is facing the prospect of losing a U.S. House seat for the first time in its history, while political rivals Texas and Florida add more residents and political clout. The reality behind the slowed growth isn’t complicated. Experts point to three major factors: declining birth rates; a long-standing trend of fewer people moving in from other states than leaving; and a drop in international immigration, particularly from Asia, which has made up for people moving to other states. California is in the throes of a yearslong housing crisis as building fails to keep up with demand, forcing more people onto the streets and making home ownership unattainable for many. The state has the nation’s highest poverty rate when housing is taken into account. Its water resources are consistently taxed, and the state has spent more than half of the past decade in drought. Freeways are jammed as more people move to the suburbs, and worsening wildfires are destroying homes and communities.
Armenians Celebrate Biden’s Genocide Declaration as Furious Turkey Summons US Ambassador (Newsweek) Armenia celebrated President Joe Biden’s recognition of the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during World War I as genocide on Saturday, as Turkey summoned the U.S. ambassador and strongly condemned the move. In acknowledging of the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians as genocide, Biden went further than his predecessors in the White House after years of careful language on the issue. The move risks fracturing America’s relationship with Turkey, a longtime U.S. ally and NATO partner. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan sent Biden a letter praising his statement. Meanwhile, officials in Turkey quickly denounced Biden’s remarks and summoned the US Ambassador to Ankara. In a statement, Turkey said its foreign minister, Sedat Onal, has told ambassador David Satterfield that Biden’s remarks caused “wounds in ties that will be hard to repair.” Onal also reportedly told Satterfield that Turkey “rejected it, found it unacceptable and condemned in the strongest terms.”
Ahead of Geneva talks, Cypriots march for peace (Reuters) Thousands of Cypriots from both sides of a dividing line splitting their island marched for peace on Saturday, ahead of informal talks in Geneva next week on the future of negotiations. With some holding olive branches, people walked in the bright spring sunshine around the medieval walls circling the capital, Nicosia. The United Nations has called for informal talks of parties in the Cyprus dispute in Geneva on April 27-29, in an attempt to look for a way forward in resuming peace talks that collapsed in mid-2017. Prospects for progress appear slim, with each side sticking to their respective positions. Greek Cypriots say Cyprus should be reunited under a federal umbrella, citing relevant United Nations resolutions. The newly-elected Turkish Cypriot leader has called for a two-state resolution. Cyprus was split in a Turkish invasion in 1974 triggered by a brief Greek-inspired coup, though the seeds of separation were sown earlier, when a power-sharing administration crumbled in violence in 1963, just three years after independence from Britain.
World’s Biggest Covid Crisis Threatens Modi’s Grip on India (Bloomberg) As India recorded more than 234,000 new Covid-19 infections last Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an election rally in the West Bengal town of Asansol and tweeted: “I’ve never seen such huge crowds.” The second wave of the coronavirus has since grown into a tsunami. India is now the global coronavirus hotspot, setting records for the world’s highest number of daily cases. Images of hospitals overflowing with the sick and dying are flooding social media, as medical staff and the public alike make desperate appeals for oxygen supplies. The political and financial capitals of New Delhi and Mumbai are in lockdown, with only the sound of ambulance sirens punctuating the quiet, but there’s a growing chorus of blame directed at Modi over his government’s handling of the pandemic. “At this crucial time he is fighting for votes and not against Covid,” said Panchanan Maharana, a community activist from the state of Odisha, who previously supported Modi’s policies but will now look for alternative parties to back. “He is failing to deliver—he should stop talking and focus on saving people’s lives and livelihoods.” Modi is seen by many as a polarizing leader whose brand of nationalism that promotes the dominance of Hindus has appalled and enraptured the nation. Whether the pandemic will dent his appeal remains unclear.
ASEAN leaders tell Myanmar coup general to end killings (AP) Southeast Asian leaders demanded an immediate end to killings and the release of political detainees in Myanmar in an emergency summit Saturday with its top general and coup leader who, according to Malaysia’s prime minister, did not reject them outright. The leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations also told Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing during the two-hour talks in Jakarta that a dialogue between contending parties in Myanmar should immediately start, with the help of ASEAN envoys. Daily shootings by police and soldiers since the Feb. 1 coup have killed more than 700 mostly peaceful protesters and bystanders, according to several independent tallies. The messages conveyed to Min Aung Hlaing were unusually blunt and could be seen as a breach of the conservative 10-nation bloc’s bedrock principle forbidding member states from interfering in each other’s affairs. But Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that policy should not lead to inaction if a domestic situation “jeopardizes the peace, security, and stability of ASEAN and the wider region” and there is international clamor for resolute action.
Sunken missing Indonesian submarine found broken into pieces (Reuters) A missing Indonesian submarine has been found, broken into at least three parts, at the bottom of the Bali Sea, army and navy officials said on Sunday, as the president sent condolences to relatives of the 53 crew. Navy chief of staff Yudo Margono said the crew were not to blame for the accident and that the submarine did not experience a blackout, blaming “forces of nature”. A sonar scan on Saturday detected the submarine at 850 metres (2,790 feet), far beyond the Nanggala’s diving range.
At least 82 die in Baghdad COVID hospital fire (Reuters) A fire sparked by an oxygen tank explosion killed at least 82 people and injured 110 at a hospital in Baghdad that had been equipped to house COVID-19 patients, an Interior Ministry spokesman said on Sunday. “We urgently need to review safety measures at all hospitals to prevent such a painful incident from happening in future,” spokesman Khalid al-Muhanna told state television, announcing the toll.
Struggling to stay afloat during the pandemic, people turn to strangers online for help (Washington Post) The pandemic has been disastrous for millions of families across the United States. Roughly 8.5 million jobs have not returned since February 2020. Meanwhile, more than 564,000 people have died of the coronavirus, and 100,000 small businesses closed permanently in just the first three months of the crisis. The government has provided help, including through multiple relief packages that sent out three rounds of stimulus checks and extended unemployment benefits. But for many people it hasn’t been enough—or come quickly enough—to avoid eviction, put food on the table and cover a growing pile of monthly bills. Enter crowdfunding, which has taken off more than ever in the past year as a way to supplement income. Sites like GoFundMe, Kickstarter or even Facebook allow people and businesses to establish a cause—or set up a page laying out why they (or someone they are raising the money for) need money, and what the cash will go toward. After demand spiked last year, GoFundMe in October formalized a new category specifically for rent, food and bills. More than $100 million had been raised at that time year-to-date for basic living expenses in tens of thousands of campaigns during 2020—a 150 percent increase over 2019. But a year into the pandemic, some individual crowdfunding campaigns are reporting little success raising donations to cover basic expenses. As pandemic fatigue worsens, it’s getting hard to raise cash for basic expenses this way. Daryl Hatton, CEO and founder of FundRazr said when he browsed through the campaigns for basic expenses, most were getting little or no donations. “I saw a whole bunch of zeros,” he said. Crowdfunding still tends to work best when people have a compelling story to tell.
Older people are the one group egalitarians discriminate against (Quartz) Young people have always been critical of their elders. What’s noteworthy about the way millennials and Zoomers talk about Baby Boomers today isn’t their disdain but its particulars: They resent the older generation because they feel shortchanged, deprived of promising futures. Gen Z, for example, famously channeled their frustration with the generation they hold responsible for issues like climate change and wealth inequality into the simple, sarcastic meme “OK boomer.” Vaccines aside, these economic frustrations are grounded in reality. At the same time, younger people’s systemic objections to the distribution of wealth and power in the US can wind up curdling into ageism. A new paper, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, highlights the importance of guarding against this bias. Over 80% of Americans between the ages of 50 and 80 say they experience ageism in their everyday lives, according to a 2020 poll from the University of Michigan. “I think many people overlook ageism as a form of prejudice in American society,” says Ashley Martin, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at Stanford University, who co-authored the paper with Michael North, an assistant professor at New York University. “It is often overlooked as an “ism” altogether, not only being condoned but often even promoted.” The paper identifies a surprising link between ageism and egalitarianism. The more participants in the study supported the principle of equality for all, the more likely they were to be biased against older people.

You’ve stocked your pantry with some basics, but now you can’t stop thinking about vegetable dum biryani, chorizo tacos, or nasi lemak. Maybe you can’t bring yourself to do anything but refresh Twitter, and snacks count as meals now, and you’re dreaming about salami and cornichons but you can’t really justify stepping out for such luxuries. (I’m not speaking from experience. Not at all.)
There is a wide world of pantry items from global regional food cultures that you can use to add acidic brightness (think sumac), heat (a dab of yuzu kosho), and umami (a dash of fish sauce) to your dishes — just like your favorite restaurants do. Sometimes it just takes adding a couple of items to your pantry.
It’s always worth starting with your local specialty markets, bakeries, butchers, wine shops, restaurants, and coffee shops that you’d normally frequent, who may be doing local delivery or contactless pick-up. Check their social media feeds — you may find that they’re getting creative. In certain locations, wholesalers and CSAs that normally serve restaurants have opened business to home cooks and can deliver locally. Don’t forget to tip extra.

You’ve stocked your pantry with some basics, but now you can’t stop thinking about vegetable dum biryani, chorizo tacos, or nasi lemak. Maybe you can’t bring yourself to do anything but refresh Twitter, and snacks count as meals now, and you’re dreaming about salami and cornichons but you can’t really justify stepping out for such luxuries. (I’m not speaking from experience. Not at all.)
There is a wide world of pantry items from global regional food cultures that you can use to add acidic brightness (think sumac), heat (a dab of yuzu kosho), and umami (a dash of fish sauce) to your dishes — just like your favorite restaurants do. Sometimes it just takes adding a couple of items to your pantry.
It’s always worth starting with your local specialty markets, bakeries, butchers, wine shops, restaurants, and coffee shops that you’d normally frequent, who may be doing local delivery or contactless pick-up. Check their social media feeds — you may find that they’re getting creative. In certain locations, wholesalers and CSAs that normally serve restaurants have opened business to home cooks and can deliver locally. Don’t forget to tip extra.

“Food comforts a need that connects us across borders,” writes Ghosh in this well-turned collection of essays combining cuisine with social and personal politics. As a child, the author moved with her family from eastern India to Delhi, and the cultural shock—bigger crowds, different flavors than her Bengali upbringing—prompts her fond recall of food-shopping trips with her father and her lifelong efforts to access the foods she loved most growing up. (The book contains a handful of recipes.) But food, she recognizes, is also often a source of rifts, even violence. In one essay, Ghosh pairs a recollection of her favorite Sikh-owned restaurant in her current home, San Diego, with anti-Sikh attacks in America and India. In another, she examines her strained relationship with her ex-husband’s family while reporting on the rivalry between a pair of Indonesian prata restaurants. Throughout, the book is structured to insist that food is inextricable from larger cultural forces. Each essay shifts across experiences (sometimes abruptly), but Ghosh writes especially well through her memories, from tender (as a child shopping for goat with her father in a bustling Delhi market) to terrifying (desperately escaping a hotel room she was accidentally locked in before a job presentation). Breaking through hotel drywall serves as a metaphor for escaping a husband who’s verbally abusive when he’s not neglectful, a story that in turn is interwoven with another about an Indian chef in San Diego who was murdered by her partner. Ghosh clearly sees the downsides of food culture—indentured servitude, racism, oversugared and watered-down variations of her favorite dishes—but her mood is also often celebratory. She concludes by writing about hosting a Diwali party and reconnecting with food during the pandemic: “Roots, if strong, survive many a pause.”
