ANGST TIME! Ro reaction to the mc getting all dressed up for a date but it’s with someone else?
Oooooof, Poor ROs. I'm gonna assume this is in the crush stage. And as I write this. I'm starting to realize that some of these romance options have more red flags than I knew.
Lady B: She hides her feelings well, going out of her way to use the opportunity to help the MC get ready. Be that doing their makeup, picking out their clothes, smothering the mc with words of advice. Anything to have that extra bit of time. And when the MC leaves, she tasks one of the Masked Mercers into watching your every move.
Bernie: They can't quite hide the fact that they're disappointed. Pouting slightly as they appraise the MCs outfit. Sticking closer than they should, never straying as the MC gets ready. Hell, bernie would even take the time out of their day to chat with the MC's intended date. Threatening them in such a way that it would go over most people's heads. But, if you look closely, there is an EDGE to their gaze. As if the only thing on their mind is to rip that rat bastard to shreds.
You never do go on that second date... hmm.
Laz: If Laz has an interest in the MC, I can see them downright blackmails your date into bailing. And it will work, trust me. As the hours would tick by, Laz would go out of their way to ensure that you end up despising that jerk by the end of the night. And then, like a good friend, they'll curl up unreasonably close with some shitty romance novels and sweets.
To help with the heartache of course.
Amyntas: He outright BITCHES the entire time. Finding anything and everything wrong with your date. All the way down to the way they breathe. (Its just so fucking annoying, ya know). By the time that douchebag decides to show their face. He's puffed up worse than a cat. Pacing up and down the halls, half ready to go feral.
And he will go feral if let loose.
Bishop: He does nothing that night, maybe wish you luck. Stays up late to make sure you get home safe. But when you've come back? Safely tucked in bed? He forces Indie to go find your date for details. Every last one. He has to know.
That his ideas of seducing you are better than theirs.
Indigo: She's pulling out the wine and fancy oud. Serenading the MC as they get ready. Fluttering about with all her bits and bobs. Letting her magic slip in here and there until the MC is practically vibrating with excitement. And then she sends them off to have their fun. Like any sane, rational woman whose secretly madly in love with their friend would do. She isn't jealous, she swears.
Okay maybe a little.
Peri: Bold of you to assume that Peri isn't already your date.
here's the secondary romances.
Asha: She laughs and asks if you'd like her to spare your date a plate. What? You're obviously not going out THIS late at night. Besides, Flin wants to bake cookies with you. And how could anyone refuse that lil dragon pout?
Lace: Spends the entire time that the MC is getting ready, getting progressively more annoyed at the fact that your date didn't think to invite your beloved sugar baby along. He's the prettiest boy in the whole of Ibereli gods damn it. He should ALSO be wined and dined!
Somehow your date ends up as their own third wheel, trapped in a crippling amount of debt as Lace drags you about the bazaar. Happy to be spoilt like the prince they truly aren't
Ribbon: She straight up asks if she could possess your date so that you two could ruin the fool financially. If that doesn't work she'll give a lecture about knowing your worth and to keep an extra blade on you, just in case.
The stranger: Wishes you luck, but otherwise ignores you for the rest of the night.

Color Guide for matching Festival Genes + Primal Eyes
Now i want to say this is not meant to be some definitive guide. These are just my attempts at matching colors as closely as i could find with what's available on the color wheel currently. Some of which were quite tricky to find a good match for (or is maybe not even the best use for the gene, looking at you Crystalline...). Will list the colors used for the scries above, but I'll also have some notes for some other similar matches or other color ideas. Overall, this was just a fun little project to work on as the genes released, and maybe some will find some use from it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Light: Sanddollar (Flaxen is a very close 2nd, if you want a very slight warmer color. Banana could also pass, but i find it a little too dark compared to the eyes)
Lightning: Robin (This one's tricky since the color IS the lightning rather than the outline, but Robin is bright enough to give the illusion of being white with a matching blue outline. Aqua is a close 2nd, but again is a little to dark in comparison)
Fire: Sunshine (Saffron if you want darker, more orange fire. Marigold if you want a lighter, more yellow fire. Sunshine is the middle ground of these two. All 3 of these match very closely, so up to your personal preference here)
Arcane: Bubblegum (Matching to the little runes. If you want to match to the eyes themselves, Orchid is the closest match without being too dark in color)
Plague: Vermilion (Berry if you want something less egregiously bright. But i do think Vermilion is technically a closer color match, tho both are very close. If you want a color flipped match, Chartreuse matches the colors pretty well, or Crocodile is you want a similar pallet but less bright (and also has a slight bit more red to it's accents). Bonus color: while it doesn't really match the eyes, Red has a very good Plague-y vibe, if you're a fan of the red+green aesthetic)
Earth: Pumpkin (This one has been the most difficult one to match with all the colors going on with both the eyes and genes. But it leads to a bunch of potential options that just kinda almost match. Ultimately tho there's not really a perfect match for these, just go by your own preference. Ginger matches close for a solid color match. For multi-toned picks, some other good options are Caramel, Peach, Ivory, Seafoam, and Cream. Sadly there's not really any colors that adds more pink secondary tones. (also as an added bonus for these: if you want to match with the geode currency used for the festival: teal, ultramarine, and splash are some good picks)
Ice: Eggplant (Indigo if you want just a very slight more saturation, but ultimately the two are nearly indistinguishable from each other. if you want some really dark blue ice in the same hue, Sapphire works well. If you want a lighter ice color: Sky, Periwinkle, Twilight, and Storm are the closest without going just full on white)
Shadow: Grape (Royal or Violet for a more subdued color, tho i find them a little too bright. The strong highlights on this gene make it tricky to match perfectly, especially when we don't have many darker purples as is. But at the same time, you really can't go too wrong with most of the purple range with this gene, it's just a matter of preference)
Wind: Peridot (Not much to say about this one. This color is incredibly spot on. I guess, if you want something a little darker, Pear matches the darker tips of the eyes)
Water: Cornflower (The whole Lapis-to-Sky range works here, for varying degrees of saturation and brightness, but i think overall Cornflower has the best balance out of all of them? (it looks the closest on adult dragons at least). Idk, this one's really tricky too xP And i am once again painfully reminded that we don't really have any good super vibrant colors in the sky blue range T___T All the closest colors are either too green or too faded. Also as a bonus option: If you want a foamy look, Ice and Pistachio work really well for this)
Nature: Orca (I initially thought Peridot would win this one, but then Orca came out of nowhere. Peridot's still another good option tho, the flowers are just a little more on the green side than the ones on the eyes (but they do match with the actual 'eye' part of the eyes). Also for a bonus color, Pearl also looks really nice paired with nature eyes, even tho it does have a lot of purple in the vines. the leaves and flowers still match really well. And as far as i can find, there's not really a good way to match the vines to the vines of the eyes, since that parts seems to stick to darker colors and browns)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
———————
i had been meaning to scry/post the dungeon meshi main cast for a while. i figured in honor of the manga's final chapter would be a good occasion
design notes:
𝟣. laios touden:
outfit inspired by fr user Rafale's laios fandragon
ravenskull broadsword bc it has wings like his sword
tundra + antique secondary/tert, like falin (siblings)
2. marcille donato:
ruby runes to represent: her magic, her red hair bow, bloody hands when she was resurrecting falin
will o' the ember for her explosion spells
iridescent primary for her elven heritage + penchant of fancy things
3. chilchuck tims:
veined tert to represent his greying hairs
i debated between the gambeson (closer texture) VS tanned rogue vest (overall closer colors) for him, but ended up going for the gambeson as it feels more distinct
camo secondary for a "camo = stealthy" joke
[edit: 1 feb 2024] i think my screen had the Flux settings too high before and i thought his shirt was beige. its actually white, so i changed his shirt from a shabby to classy dress shirt.
4. senshi of izganda:
bamboo dried tea to represent his cooking supplies
unfortunately none of the helm apparel had the right colors for his helmet, so i opted for tan okapi to represent his helm's horn colors
i wanted to include the iron shield apparel for his adamantine shield/pot, but it wouldve covered up his kilt, so i left it out
[edit: 1 feb 2024] changed primary from ribbon to chrysocolla, an earthy gene to match his past as a miner. changed tert color slightly to match better. also gave him carrots
5. izutsumi:
initially i tried nocturne and spiral, but the armour pieces looked too short on them, so i ended up going for mirror instead
i also tried the tanned rogue apparels, but they covered up too much of the torso
wooly antennae for her ears
6. falin touden:
marshlurker's drape to represent her coat, bc there wasnt a lot of suitable coats, and the more purple-y hue (and hat) also references her debut outfit
sparkle tert to represent her magic
tundra + antique secondary/tert, like laios (siblings)
[edit: 1 feb 2024] edited her primary to be more purplish, since the animes confirmed her coat is supposed to be more indigo colored, and gave her browner boots. also edited her reference photo coat color to match it too
7. falin (chimera):
i chose to make the touden siblings both tundras, so that chimera falin could be a gaoler (based on the joke gaolers are just tundra 2.0)
spirit secondary bc she haunts the narrative
if youve made it to here, feel free to comment which fandragon scry is your fav! :)

way back in february, i drew my first killjoys picture. i had only just started listening to mcr and kept getting kobra and fun ghoul mixed up (unsure how that happened), but even then i knew my brain was downloading something big. i am no longer the same person, and i thank the teletubby sun god for that each and every day.
(image description in alt and under the cut)
image description: this image shows a very saturated, brightly colored drawing of the teletubbies as the killjoys from my chemical romance's album titled "danger days: the true lives of the fabulous killjoys." from left to right there is laa-laa, the yellow one, as jet-star, then dipsy, the green one, as the kobra kid, tinky winky, the purple or blue one, as party poison, and finally po, the red one as fun ghoul. block text at the top of the page reads "the future is bulletproof," and text at the bottom in gold paint marker reads "the aftermath is secondary." the background is a rich blue at the top of the page and bleeds down into gray. all of the teletubby killjoys are wearing bomber jackets in various styles, but no other clothes. jet star's jacket is black with a red patch on the sleeve, kobra's is red with blue and white stripes going down the sleeves, party's is a dark indigo blue with a couple of red and white details, and fun ghoul's is actually a black and yellow striped shirt with a khaki and black vest over the top. jet-star has laa-laa's curly yellow antenna poking from curly shoulder-length hair that starts yellow at the roots and then turns brown, and is also wearing reflective aviator sunglasses. kobra has dipsy's straight green antennae coming out of short lime green hair that's been combed back and is wearing large black sunglasses. his teletubby chest television is also visible and displaying a blue eyeball. party's purple triangular antennae comes out of red hair and he is also wearing brown leather gloves. ghoul has stringy black hair with dark red roots a d a circular red antennae coming out the top, and the little chest tv shows a blank white emoji smile in the style of the better living industries logo. ghoul is also wearing a belt, despite not having pants, and is reaching for a brown holster, though we can't see anything inside it. end id.

Do we know what blue symbolizes? Yellow is the banditos' colour/the bishops can't see it, so it's like. Hope, presumably, then red is blurryface's colour, which I guess is just negativity in general, but blue has been prevalent since RAB, the secondary colour of vessel, absent on BF, then returned in the form of chlorine on Trench, the third colour of S&I, and now it's appeared again on Clancy with Midwest Indigo. "It's a different blue, it's deeper than it's been"
Has it been confirmed to be symbolic of like...pressure? Pressure from fans, the industry, etc etc??
Edit: Updated w/ a pt 2 ✨

The Color Language of Phantomarine
At just a cursory glance at this webcomic, it is very obvious that there are strong colors and that they will be tied to themes of the story. And the impulse to discuss and dissect them is.... far too great.
So! Let's start with something general, yes?
Saturation
There are two types of color schemes in the webcomic so far. Schemes with brighter colors and additional accents, and more muted colors with much more limited value differences. Practically speaking, more saturated colors and visual interest helps to draw the eye to what is important; like black thick lines around animated characters to distinguish them from the background. But.... we have a group of characters who has changed from a background scheme to a main character scheme. Such as....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Our Favorite Princess.
Three different color schemes for three different Phaedras. The first muted yellows and browns, almost boring against the intense lighting of the Candlelight Sea and its foreshadowing hues. The second an intense yellow and terracotta red that hold up against the maroons and deep reds of the Red Tide. The third, blues and white like the very sea she was looking down at but saturated and darkened with indigo and purple unlike any of the other sea ghosts we have seen before.
The transition from background color scheme to VIP color scheme coincide with the very critical moment of the Princess meeting Cheth, demonstrating that her death is a critical moment plot-wise. Her transition to a completely different but still VIP scheme is when she realizes exactly what has happened... and we see that it changes her outlook down to its core, all the warm colors replaced with cool tones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, a characters' color scheme tells us both how important they are and can clue us in to their mental states and affiliations. Nothing new. Let's see those groups!
Cheth
Tumblr media
As the Red Tide King, it isn't surprising that his color scheme is dominated by a bright red, mixing into warmer purples with highly contrasting white and black. This color scheme overtakes the muted blues of the sea ghost, as well as marking them with his tattoos. White is the secondary color closely associated with Cheth in-story, representing bones featured both in skeletons and his original divine body the Bonefish. This sort of color pallet usually infers more sinister intentions, with red commonly being associated with aggression, but I believe in this case it implies passion. Not necessarily romantic passion, mind, but a deep level of involvement and care.
The Plume Church
Tumblr media
Black and bright turquoise and blue with touches of white and green, Cheline and the institution worshiping her are perfect foils to Cheth in color scheme; the cool colors of the Goddess of Life oppose the warm tones of the God of Death while still being unique against The Candlelight Sea. I imagine the black represents the ashes left in the wake of her fire and the greens and blue new life growing from it, though the predominantly black robes are not the usual choice for a Life Diety. The very liberal use of black also paints a more sinister color scheme, with it's traditional use to imply 'evil' in villains. As of writing this, I do actually think that is the intention.
The Mantaluna Crew
Tumblr media
Being Seaghosts, the group's scheme is focused around a cool blue, but with more saturation and variation than other seaghosts to represent how they still have some life in them yet. Their cooler colors also allows them to contrast starkly with Cheth, but the purple gives it just a bit more warmth than the Plume Church, showing that while the crew may follow their Church's teachings.... they are fundamentally different on some level than those who have tied themselves closer to the Church.
Pavel, Vanna, and the Lodestars
Tumblr media
Characterized by yellow with accents of white, red, and black, the Lodestars stand out. Being the third primary color, they easily stand apart from both Cheth and The Plume Church, showing they are not tied to either. Yellow appears to be the 'neutral' side in this diefic-level conflict, with Best Boy Pavel trying to be a mediator and Phaedra from Chapter 1 treating Cheth with more empathy than in the current chapters when her color scheme was strikingly similar. They do not have a side: they simply want what they think is best and try to stand as a beacon against the dark.
The Fata Morgana
Tumblr media
Monochromatic with only lighting and their pale pink eyes for color, these enigmas stand apart as blank voids against the rich vibrancy of the rest of the Candlelight sea. The dominant white with bone-like designs implies a closer relation with Cheth than Cheline, though the exact nature is still up for debate.
Seaghosts
Tumblr media
Another monochromatic and muted color scheme, the seaghosts of the Candlelight sea are a pale blue with some white to outline and to fill the eyes. A traditional scheme for spirits, hostile or otherwise, and it blends nicely with their home in the ocean, truly making them feel a part of it. Their cooler color scheme also allows the Red Tide to stand out beside them.
I have a few special mentions that are not fully flung schemes of their own, yet, but that I feel need mentioning.
Silas, though we have yet to see him in different lighting, has the Plume Church's signature blues and greens catching in his hair, with the rest of his pallet being a background tone with little detail. Almost like a certain bird's words have wormed right into the head of 'some nobody' and he all too eagerly listens for the boons she promises.
Tumblr media
Daphnie and Euphamina also share a muted color scheme, tending towards the golds with purple to show their high status. Though this is their funeral dress, Daphnie having the black on top covering her own warm and regal colors while her mother instead covers the black with yellow and dons spectacles of a familiar red seem to hint at how the Plume Church interacts with them. Daphine is being covered and almost smothered, though her pure intentions still peek through; Euphamina cannot get away from the influences, but has found ways to assert her will.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the funeral, we have a mystery bean with their very own VIP color scheme with cool, deep blues that we have yet to see used elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Finally, we have Amos Ellery. We also do not know much of his color scheme sans funeral, but I believe his color scheme hits at his own motivations, similar to Silas. Whereas Silas's colors were seemingly very average for persons in Saperport, save the little highlighting of his hair, Amos is all black, white, and grey. His course is chosen not because of promises, nor because he agrees with the Church... they are driven by the Church being the only thing 'correct' to follow.
Tumblr media
I hope you have enjoyed my ramblings, the pretty colors, and any snippets of a story you saw. Do please go read and give the author all the support!

WHAT IS PAL AU- HOW MANY AUS DO YOU HAVE CURRENTLY
PAL AU is a drafted universe that Ive created, I have never yet to complete the whole summary or the descriptions/infos about the stories since I'm on art doins.
PAL is a short name for the title of "Pour and Lit"
As expected there will be angst, fluff, romance, slowburn, betrayal, drama, wholesomeness, actually- lets also count fruitiness here :)
I only have three and four's design with this art I made
Basically it's a plot how Three works on with bad guys and deals with alot of stuff. Especially stealing (his role as a secret criminal highlights this)
He is a main character (tritagonist) and known as the famous Criminal around the whole state (with a mask on his face) (DO NOT. MAKE THIS A DREAM MEME DEAR GOD...)
Age: 28
He has a son named Elliot. (He'd been called with nicknames such as "egg" "chump" "eggy boi" "buddegg" "dora-pup") since three plays also the role being a good father to his son. Elliot is adopted.
(Its eggdog but in human- I get that it would be weird for you guys but I think I'm still on track matching his personality trait to the EGGDOG here.)
Elliot is about 9-10 years old in this universe, he's a soft and loving for animals and loves to hold guns. (Toy guns, SMG3 keeps him out of reach for the guns he used since he's not that prepared yet and plus he's too young)
He's pretty much interested with video games, daily activities such as playing outside, watching people use guns, wanting to be like his dad (three), dogs.
For SMG4 he plays the role as an Undercover Cop
He is a main character on a secondary pov who runs as a Protagonist
Age: 29
SMG4 is a nice and kind person once you get to know him, he does the opposite when he covers his identity as a cop. Optimism shows to his side whenever its playing a role as a civillain/single dad. Quite foolish for three from never buying the act.
Because he knows... that SMG4 is a cop behind that disguise he's giving out. SMG4 is tasked to work on daily night shifts around the place. While the place, also is where SMG3 lives is an apartment he could only afford. With SMG4 not knowing that three is actually the criminal they've been looking for.
He also plays of the role as a father to his adopted son named Bennet (who is also Beeg SMG4 who also matches with the personality of temper) he was an orphan when SMG4 met him during an investigation from the orphanage, seeing Bennet's hobbies of how SMG4 used to do back when he was the same age as Ben's made him want to give bennet a future-
Bennet is around 11-12 years old
----
If you're wondering where the other side characters like Mario or Meggy or OTHERS- they'll show up sooner...
-----
By the way- AUs :))
Theres
"Indigo Secret" AU
Brewing Romance AU
Pour and Lit AU
The Frog Prince AU
Gone AU
Blind!SMG4 BR AU
Ehhh seems about right :))

YA CANT BLAME ME- I HAVE SO MANY IDEAS ON MY HEAD AND I'M BURSTING IT ALL OUT ON A PIECE OF PAPER TO PUT THE WORK N ART-

Steampunk Orange | Poll Dress
Here's a master post for the poll dress! I'll update this as we go!
Last updated: 07/01/2024
Progress Links
The PlanTM Materials To-Do
Links to the polls
Make a dress? Side to draw influence from? Colors? Primary, secondary, tertiary. Skirt length and style? Sleeves? Tie-breaker. Neckline? Waistline? Vibes?
Design elements decided so far!
This dress will be for the unknown Orange side. Our color scheme will be mainly orange and black, with a bit of indigo and white for accents. The skirt will be midi-length (fall at or just below the knees) and have an asymmetrical style. The gown will have a Basque waistline and a high neck with bishop sleeves. There will be steampunk vibes through the garment.
Polls round two (accessory questions)
Hat! Charms! Shoes! Glasses! Am I forgetting something super important?
Accessory elements decided!
It's tiny hat time, people! Rather than charms, I'll be stringing some jewelry chain along the garment (and maybe a little bit of charms, too, as a treat). This is going to make great noise whenever I move. Thrifting shoes means that I can't guarantee exactly what kind and style I get, but my order of priorities is: heeled boots, stripper heels (nice), boots, flats. I'll update y'all when I get to go out and what I find in my size! For glasses, we're going to go with some cool sunglasses I found online a while back.
Some brain-storming dumps:
Started looking into some skirt and sleeve reference photos I liked Fabric Scavenging (This one's no longer relevant, rip) Some fun dress reference images!

Color Harmony
This is inspired by a post I wrote answering an ask about the triadic color scheme. So, let's dive into color harmonies.
There are a couple of ways to create color harmony, and some of the most common are:
Analogous color scheme (which I usually refer to as "related colors")
Monochromatic color scheme
Complementary/contrasting color scheme
Split complementary color scheme
Triadic color scheme
There are also other color harmonies like the tetradic color scheme (which forms a rectangle across the color wheel and includes 4 colors) and the square color scheme (which forms a square across the color wheel and also includes 4 colors) to name a few. But I'm keeping it (somewhat) basic in this post.
Value (dark/light) and intensity (saturated/muted) also play a role in color harmonies, but I'm keeping it simple in this post by just focusing on color combinations.
As always when explaining these things, I need this visual aid to help me:
Tumblr media
(This is a photo I took of a color-wheel illustration in Betty Edwards' book "Color".)
This is a traditional color wheel with 3 primary colors, 3 secondary colors, and 6 tertiary colors.
(I'm putting their numbers in the list below so you'll know which color I'm referring to on the color wheel.)
The colors are:
12: Yellow (primary)
1: Yellow-Orange (tertiary)
2: Orange (secondary)
3: Red-Orange (tertiary)
4: Red (primary)
5: Red-Purple (tertiary)
6: Purple (secondary)
7: Blue-Purple (tertiary)
8: Blue (primary)
9: Blue-Green (tertiary)
10: Green (secondary)
11: Yellow-Green (tertiary)
(Not that this will matter to the post, but if you're interested: The primary colors can't be created by mixing other colors/pigments. These are the basic colors you need to create the other colors on the color wheel. The secondary colors are those you get by mixing two of the primaries together. The tertiary colors are those you get by mixing the primary color with the secondary color that's on either side of it.)
(Also, the tertiary colors usually have different names in everyday language (like magenta, indigo, or turquoise). But I'm coming from a painter's perspective when naming the tertiary colors because this was how I learned how to identify hues and mix them properly.)
With that sorted, let's dive into the different color harmonies.
Analogous Color Scheme
These colors are inherently harmonious because they share the same space on the color wheel and reflect similar light waves.
Usually, they include 3 colors, but a 4th and 5th could potentially work as well.
If you think of the color wheel as a cake, the analogous colors are all included in a small/mid slice of it. They are all next to each other.
An example could be purple, blue-purple, and blue since these 3 colors are right next to each other on the color wheel.
The analogous color scheme is often used with characters that are color-coded with a secondary (or tertiary) color. Secondary (and tertiary) colors are more difficult to distinguish than primary colors since they're produced by mixing at least two other colors. So, there is always more than one color at play in the secondary (and tertiary) ones.
This is why we often see, for example, orange color-coded characters in QLs use a spectrum of orange where they sometimes verge towards yellow and/or red.
But, this color scheme can be used in the set design as well, as it was in the background in this scene from House of Stars:
Tumblr media
There's yellow, orange, and red (which incorporates a spectrum of 5 colors on the color wheel), and makes an analogous color scheme. There's some pink in there as well, which, if we want to be basic, is pretty much just a light red (red mixed with white). (There's also some green, which is a complementary color to red, but I'll get to that below.)
Monochromatic Color Scheme
This color scheme is basically several values (dark/light) of the same color.
A simple way to think about it is to think about a black-and-white photo. There's everything in there from black to the gray midtones to white.
Or this frame from Bed Friend:
Tumblr media
If we just focus on the white-to-black color spectrum, there's the white of the lampshade and Uea's shirt, the gray on the wall, the gray of Uea's pants, the darker gray/black on the headboard and King's shirt, and the black of the nightstand.
If another color was used, the black would still be black and the white would be white, but the midtones in between would be different values of the color of choice (for example purple, blue, or green).
Obviously, it doesn't have to go all the way to the ends of the spectrum (to the black and the white) to create color harmony. Using the midtones also works well, like these harmonious blues in Ji's bedroom in To Be Continued:
Tumblr media
(I know this might look gray to a lot of people. But, trust me, there's blue in there.)
Complementary/Contrasting Color Scheme
I've already written about complementary/contrasting colors before, so I won't explain it in detail in this post. However, the core principle is that the complementary colors sit on the opposite sides of the color wheel.
The basic (primary + secondary) examples are:
Yellow + purple
Red + green
Blue + orange
And we also have black/white (or dark/light).
I would say that this is the most commonly used color harmony in the QLs I've watched. It's an easy way to make the colors stand out, it's a great way to show contrasts in characters, but it's also very easily and universally used with the black and white, dark and light contrasts in particular.
There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to the black and white contrasts, but I'm choosing Lee Hyun and Kim An in Love Class Season 2 because their lives and personalities contrast just as much as their black and white colors.
Tumblr media
I also want to add Chen Yi and Ai Di from Kiseki: Dear to Me who are matching each other:
Tumblr media
It's a bonus that they're matching on all three colors (black, white, and red).
If I were to choose two of the colors from the color wheel and a QL that used them well, I would choose red and green and I Told Sunset About You:
Tumblr media
They used these contrasting/complementary colors everywhere and it was so well done that everything from the set design to the characters was unforgettable. It was divine.
Split Complementary Color Scheme
This is also a way to use color on the opposite side of the color wheel. But, instead of the complete opposite, you select the two colors adjacent to the complement.
Instead of yellow being used with purple, yellow is used with red-purple and blue-purple, or purple is used with yellow-green and yellow-orange.
This is where we get into complicated territory, especially when trying to find examples of this in QLs. I don't think this is used very much (I can't remember having seen a representation of this) because sticking to the primary and secondary colors is easier.
Tertiary colors are used (I would say they're used more as a hue of a secondary or primary color, like I mentioned with orange in the part about the analogous color scheme above, rather than a color on its own) but are difficult to distinguish from the primary and secondary colors that produce them.
Every split complementary combination includes at least one tertiary color, so this might be why this color harmony isn't used as often in QLs.
If you have any examples, feel free to share them.
Triadic Color Scheme
I've already written about the triadic color scheme before, so I won't explain it in detail here. However, the core principle is that this color scheme is depicted with a triangle (there are two examples in the image of the color wheel above). Each point of the triangle points to a color that harmonizes with the other two.
The basic examples are:
The 3 primary colors together (yellow, red, and blue)
The 3 secondary colors together (orange, purple, and green)
An example of this can be Ji's bedroom in To Be Continued (the image I showed above), where there are yellow candles on the nightstands, a red balloon dog to the left (I can't really see if this is a Jeff Koons' figurine, but I doubt it), and the blue surrounding them (as well as their clothes).
There's also the living room in Knock Knock, Boys!, which includes the yellow, red, and blue (I love how all three of those colors pop):
Tumblr media
But there are also the secondary colors in combination:
Tumblr media
The orange pillow and posters, the purple light in the background to the right, and the green beer bottles. This is just another reason for me to absolutely love this series.
And then there's Secret Crush on You who wants to have all the primary and secondary colors in one frame at the same time (considering this is a colorful show, I'm not surprised):
Tumblr media
The yellow, red-ish, and blue straws, the red backpack, the blue on Toh's shirt and the pillow behind Nuea, the orange on Nuea's clothes, the purple on Toh's shirt, and the green on Toh's shirt as well as the plants behind them.
And in this frame:
Tumblr media
Where all three primary and all three secondary colors exist on those condom packages. Iconic!
And what a way to finish off this post, lol.
So, there you have it. 5 different ways to create color harmony with some examples from a couple of QLs.

IBO reference notes on . . . the battle at the low-orbit station
So. According to Gundam Wiki (citing an official Twitter message that's cited in turn without a link on an English-language message board), the shoulder-mounted bazooka that Akihiro uses in his second deployment in the Graze Custom was acquired during the battle in Mars orbit that forms the bulk episode 5, 'Beyond the Red Sky', when Tekkadan manage to run rings around Colonel Coral Conrad and shady trader Orcus (remember Orcus?). This struck me as rather curious, since I couldn't remember a point in that fight where it would have made sense for anybody to mug a Graze for its weaponry, much less a bazooka-equipped Graze actually appearing among the Gjallarhorn forces.
Being a diligent sort of obsessive, I decided to go back and watch the episode in full, to check my memory. This led to noting a number of (to me) interesting things and since nobody can stop me, I'm going to jot them down here.
First up, the Graze contingent for this episode mostly consists of the rather nice blue models labelled alternatively in secondary material as the 'Ares type' or 'space type'. The latter seems the most useful term since we see this livery repeat at various other locations later on, most significantly as part of the Dort Colony garrison and Gaelio's intercept squadron in Earth orbit. We can assume this is the general-purpose colours for Gjallarhorn 'suits operating in space, outside of elite units like the Arianrhod Fleet or those under the Seven Stars direct control (e.g. the yellow/gold versions the Issues use in Urdr Hunt).
Like a lot of the Graze's design, this seems to be a callback to the Leos from Gundam Wing, which featured a similar green/indigo distinction for ground/space (although space Leos are much more purple).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This episode is the series' first major space battle and it showcases some brilliant shot composition. There's so much to love about how this fight is story-boarded, from the mobile suits flying at weird angles to one another, to the way in-cockpit views are used.
The right-hand image here is from the perspective of Ein Dalton's Graze, and his appearance demonstrates a small detail that's easy to miss if you haven't poured over the the concept art. While this is still the green Graze that Ein was piloting in the opening episodes (its arm having been replaced in the meantime), the waist-mounted boosters have been swapped for blue shoulder-mounted units, like the rest of the squadron deployed from the Ares space station.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is because the space boosters are slightly different from the ground-use ones, featuring extra vernier jets. However, I'm not sure the gaps for those ought to have been drawn in the left screenshot here, since they're supposed to be at right angles to the main thrusters. You can see the correct rendering on the left, below. In a great bit of continuity, Ein is later shown assisting this particular Graze after it's lost one of its boosters. Good boy! (For all that he turned out to be a mite unbalanced, Ein begins as a very diligent soldier.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oddly enough given its ubiquity in the merchandising, the shot on the right will be the last time the green Mars-branch Graze is seen in action in the show. After this, Ein switches to using Gaelio's Schwalbe Graze, and opposition to Tekkadan comes from different Gjallarhorn units using other colour schemes. The Arianrhod Grazes that will become the mandated 'green enemy type' for Season 2 are a notably different shade and colour layout (left), and the next and final time the 'Mars green' Graze appears, it will be in the rather ignoble aftermath of Hashmal's rampage across the Chryse Planatia (right).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[EDIT: I belatedly realised the above is not quite true: Mars-green Grazes do in fact participate in the final battle of the show against Mikazuki and Akihiro, and the machine Iok commandeers after McGillis wrecks his custom model is painted in these colours. So that's actually a nice bookending. I was misremembering because most of the action is handled by the Graze Schild variants.]
Anyway, that's enough Graze appreciation.
Time for some blatant Eugene Sevenstark propaganda.
Tumblr media
Up to this point in the show, Eugene has been positioned as something between a joke character and the obligatory Doubting Thomas. He's clearly got an ego, clearly has a chip on his shoulder regarding Orga's leadership, and his main contribution to a battle previously has been to run away (very effectively, saving Orga's life in the process, but still).
Then, with Gjallarhorn and Orcus bearing down on Tekkadan's spacehsip, Orga comes up with a plan to use a nearby mining asteroid to perform an insanely sharp handbrake turn in order to gain altitude over their pursuers. This involves launching an anchor into the asteroid and sling-shotting the Isaribi through a tight orbit before using an explosive charge to blow the anchor and release them. Given the speed with which this must be enacted, the charge has to be placed manually, using a mobile worker. Orga originally intends to do this himself but Eugene brashly volunteers in his place, saying that as leader, he shouldn't be doing everything himself and grumbling that the others let Orga have his way far too easily.
Both these will be important charaterisation for later.
What I want to talk about, however, is how this manoeuvre goes off. It starts reasonably enough, with the anchor being fired into the rock and Eugene racing down the cable to, uh, shoulder-barge the bomb into position.
Tumblr media
He shoots the charge and it detonates, but the anchor struck deeper than expected and doesn't come free. Now, based on past expectations, one might expect Eugene to panic over this. He's certainly not seemed especially level-headed up to now, and perhaps even a bit of a paper-tiger.
Instead, he backflips the mobile worker to launch his fuel tank at the recalcitrant anchor.
Tumblr media
I just -- this is the first time we have seen any of these boys operating in space and he just . . . does that. Split second decision-making, zero-g environment, no problem. And it works! The extra blast from the tank frees the anchor.
Tumblr media
It's brilliantly rendered too, with Eugene's shots going wide for a long few seconds before he finally gets the range and blows the tank.
If that wasn't enough, we then get a moment of 'oh shit, what happened to Eugene?' as the screen whites out, the cable snaking in silhouette, before coming around again to show that he's managed to latch on to the anchor to ride it back to the Isaribi.
Tumblr media
Not only is this a fantastic action sequence, showcasing the weight and physical interaction that IBO excels at, and not only does it cement Eugene's position as 'the guy you really want flying your spaceship', it also serves as excellent set-up for where his griping about Orga's leadership is eventually going to go. Because yes, Eugene complains about Orga charging ahead and raises some legitimate objections. But at the same time, he is fully prepared to take incredibly risky actions on Orga's say-so, both recognising the strategy is sound and trusting Orga enough to follow his lead regardless of personal friction.
This will pay off later in perhaps the worst way it could, when Eugene proves incapable of properly pulling Orga up on his 'I must do everything' tendencies until it's much too late, precisely because of this trust. For now, it's just a wonderful piece of showing-against-telling, highlighting that Eugene is a true part of the team -- whatever he says -- and a damn skilled one at that.
Also, and this is me stretching for interesting reads, but the fact he is *this* good in a mobile worker and in zero-g in general despite being canonically not great during ground battles or when using mobile suits is something I place in the 'neurodivergent Eugene' column. I mean, if that's the right term when we're talking about fighting ability using a human/machine interface. Basically I think there's the basis to argue Eugene just copes better in space, where he can move any way he wants, rather than being stuck under gravity and following a human template. Partly this is inspired by how he gallops his mobile worker during the battle at the CGS base, as if he's trying to jump into the air to escape Orlis Stenja's attempt to kill him and Orga. Mostly, it's this scene, and what it shows us about Eugene's skill level once the gang gets off the ground.
What was I supposed to be talking about?
Oh right, Tekkadan swiping Gjallarhorn components. Well, this episode does give us the Saga of the Schwalbe Cables, as McGillis and Gaelio use their souped-up Grazes against Barbatos and its newly painted shoulders (those are bits of Orlis' Graze. RIP).
McGillis manages to snag Mikazuki's forearm quite soundly, forcing Mika to eject the armour from the frame to make his escape. Bye-bye weirdly out-of-place buckler.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This tussle between the two pilots prompts the beginning of their mutual respect in combat, as they each recognise the other's skill (with some lovely framing to boot).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Gaelio shouts a lot and generally makes a right nit of himself, also latching on to Barbatos and even making a good try at dragging it on to a lower orbit, before getting maced for his efforts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His grappling cable remains latched to Barbatos' leg afterwards and Mika will later use this self-same claw weapon during the fight with the Turbines in a couple of episodes' time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a slight animation snafu here, in that while the gauntlet from which the cable is launched is clearly still attached in the shot where we see Mika's mace hit Gaelio's Schwalbe Graze, it's missing from subsequent frames showing Barbatos on the Isaribi's tail. However, the intention is obviously supposed to be that the gauntlet remains connected, since it will replace the ejected forearm armour and be used to allow Mika to keep pace with Lafter's Hyakuri. This glitch aside, the connecting logic is extremely clear, as Tekkadan once more incorporate battlefield debris in place of missing parts of Barbatos' outer shell.
Speaking of continuity, this episode also establishes the unique nature of Ahab reactor signatures, not only by having Ein recognise the signal from Tekkadan's new Graze Custom as belonging to Crank Zent's Graze (see the second screenshot in this post) but also by showing one of McGillis' subordinates pattern-match Barbatos to an official database.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entries here are fairly meaningless in terms of wider canon details but for posterity, here's a breakdown.
Barbatos aside, each frame number takes the form of a letter followed by a three, four or five digit number. Examples include 'E-978', 'R-3908' and 'C-09067'. These are shown to be equivalent to 'ASW-G-08', so presumably identify the specific frame/'suit. The second term appears to indicate the kind of mobile suit listed, since Barbatos' is 'GUNDAM TYPE'. Outside that, however, they don't accord with the more commonly used terms like Rodi, Graze or Geirail. We've instead got things like:
NORMAL WR-09
NORMAL PR
NORMAL 26 WW
NORMAL GERA
AUTO MUG
AUTO MUG 2
ANTI 809
And so on, with variations of these general formats. As I said, this isn't especially meaningful, though it does give us a code for Barbato's database entry (186.390.20) and, together with Ein's POV, establishes that Ahab signals take the form of bar graphs -- although, here at least, there is little in the graphics to indicate much difference between Crank's single-reactor Graze and the dual-reactor Gundam frame, a distinction described by the dialogue.
While we're on the subject of screens, we may as well take a look at the following two as well, which provide a little bit of additional world-building.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First we have the display from Orcus' ship, showing an overview of the battlefield. Interesting, it indicates Barbatos' frame code in full, suggesting this is broadcast as an IFF signal, which is rather funny given the extended search sequence that follows on Gjallarhorn's side.
We also see the Grazes in play identified using codes such as 'EB101', 'EB102', 'EB103' and so on. Now the Graze frame's model code is 'EB-06', indicating it is the sixth mobile suit Gjallarhorn have developed since the Calamity War (predecessor Geirail is EB-04). We can infer therefore that 'EB' is a standard designator for a Gjallarhorn 'suit, making it likely these are just generic IDs assigned from Orcus' perspective.
More interestingly, this screen picks out one of the structures in the vicinity of the battles as an 'orbital mass driver'. This is presumably the large satellite the shuttle skims past as it tries to evade the first three Grazes to come after Tekkadan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Together with the mining asteroid, this is gives us a brief indication of industry going on in Mars orbit. What exactly the mass driver is being used to launch and where is never made clear, although we are told that Mars' main export is the 'half metal' used to dampen Ahab reactor emissions, so it's plausible this forms some part in that. It's a pretty nice design at least, using the same spherical core as Gjallarhorn's space stations and the larger space dock, but with an unusual asymmetric rotating boom and a stationary rectangular module on the end.
The second screen shown above is the attitude control program running aboard the Schwalbe Grazes, shown as McGillis commentates about Gaelio's inability to hit Barbatos. I love how this highlights that standard mobile suits are doing a lot of computing in order to enact what their pilots want. This is something that's been made explicit in Gundam shows right from the very start, but it's rarely more than a passing detail. In Iron-Blooded Orphans, by contrast, it's part of the central conceit that the Alaya-Vijnana allows people to operate machinery much more effectively, by making it a direct extension of their bodies. Gaelio can't hit Mikazuki explicitly because his Schwalbe's software struggles to predict Barbatos' more instinctive movements. We see the program cycling through different patterns as it attempts to lock on, and might infer this must go both ways, with the program analysing an enemy and deploying a corresponding attack or defence response.
We've seen before that Barbatos moves far more fluidly than the Grazes; this nicely underlines the point and provides a bit of technobabble to quantify the advantage that will carry Tekkadan so far. Gjallarhorn's mobile suits appear more robotic because they are -- something with interesting implications given we eventually learn that an excessive degree of weaponry automation caused the Calamity War, and that will provide a moment of sharp dissonance when the Graze Ein appears during the season finale, fully emoting with human-like gestures.
Alas, in all this, we never do get any hint this is where Tekkadan acquire the bazooka, if that was indeed the intention all along. To be fair, we don't see what Akihiro is doing after a certain point in the fight, so there's plenty of room to posit a missing scene. But I have to say, from a continuity management perspective, I would personally have had them recover it after the ground battle in the opening two episodes. For one thing, the alternative shoulder armour is painted dark green, in line with the land-based Grazes rather than the detachment from Ares. For another, that initial battle is one Gjallarhorn soundly lose, as opposed to 'merely' failing to stop the Isaribi escaping. Wouldn't it have made slightly more sense for the boys to happen upon an abandoned equipment module once Gjallarhorn's mobile workers had cleared out?
It's a very minor detail; the bazooka isn't even especially plot-relevant (more 'let's sell more toys!' relevant; yes I am writing this while building the Graze Custom kit, why do you ask?). There's a much more obvious continuity problem in 'Beyond the Red Sky' that you might already be aware, where after being visibly winged by one of McGillis' shots, the sub and dub script have Mika say "that would've hit me," as if the bullet had missed (not quite sure if that's confusion caused by the original Japanese in some way?). But this is just a case of the script or versions of the script not keeping pace with the animation, or simply being ambiguous -- and anyway, it can be rescued as part of the point being made by assuming that since Mika hasn't yet adjusted to treating Barbatos' thrusters as an extension of his body, he's treating this hit as a near miss.
The bazooka thing stands out far more in an episode that otherwise effectively sets various things up or builds on already-established details. It's a case of something going unjustified in the text, which is quite unusual for materiel in this show. Usually, we can trace exactly where each of piece of military hardware the boys use has come from, highlighting the persistent through-line about how important logistics are in the fight for survival.
I'm not surprised there were queries about it at the time, and while the answer listed on Gundam Wiki is serviceable enough, it does still rely on finding a convenient void in the action, rather than being textually established.
