One Dress a Day Challenge
June: Weddings
Jodhaa Akbar / Aishwarya Rai as Princess Jodhaa and Hrithik Roshan as Emperor Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar
Time for some gorgeous costumes from two of my "comfort characters"!
As far as I can tell, they go through both a Hindu wedding ceremony and a Muslim one. I assume the mask of flowers and beads that the emperor wears is a traditional thing, although I wasn't able to find much information about it--partly because I don't know what it's called. Can anyone tell me more? (ETA: Thank you, @celestesinsight, for letting me know that it's called a shehra!)
It's hard to say which outfit is more lavish, although Jodhaa clearly wins in the jewelry department. She even has ankle bracelets and toe rings! Her fingers and feet are dyed with a red substance called alta.
P.S. The movie is back on Netflix, yay!

People say -with reason- that Bride & Prejudice's Darcy is very undarcy-like, and it's one of the reasons why I think it is a shame that the song Arrogance, Pride, and Vanity didn't make it into the movie, because it's like
*Lalita vents a grievance or prejudice she has against Darcy*
*Darcy repeats in different ways that the "screw the light bulb, pet the dog" line was A JOKE and that several days later he's still hung up on how she missed the point*
And that's so very "my good opinion once lost is lost forever" of him.

Vivah: The Pisces-Cancer Energy is High
Follow me on Instagram: @thatguyanesejournalist
Let’s talk about Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivah.
Tumblr media
Poonam is a traditional young woman set to marry Prem, a groom chosen by her uncle. Poonam and Prem's faith and love are tested however, when an accident occurs that alters Poonam’s life.
Tumblr media
I’ll be honest. This may be the first movie in the new blog format that has a short and mainly positive review. I grew up watching this movie, and it has remained one of my favorites as I have gotten older.
The pacing of the film’s plot is consistent. It doesn’t feel too fast or too slow; all the scenes are in the movie for a purpose.
The plot is also very family-focused, its message laced with the importance of tradition and responsibility. These ideas are to be expected from Barjatya’s film as it’s not the first time he’s presented them to an audience (see Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, and Hum Saath Saath Hain for reference).
Tumblr media
If I had to be nitpicky (just to play devil’s advocate), I would say the film at times gets a tad preachy with its dialogue about family values between in-laws. I think it reached a peak for me when Prem’s father comes to the hospital to support Poonam’s family and says something along the lines of, “We are family now. We need to stick together.” That line, and many others, come across as speaking more towards the audience than to the characters themselves. But I digress, mainly because the film does its best to not be boring (especially with the twist at the end). Some of my absolute favorite moments in the film are:
When Prem starts imagining that everyone on the plane is some iteration of Poonam
The sindoor scene between Prem and Poonam in the hospital
Tumblr media
The soundtrack, composed by Ravindra Jain, is memorable but a tad monotonous. I loved the pairing of Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal’s voices, but I wished there were more upbeat songs between them (I guess we got Milan Abhi Adha Adhura Hai, but it’s still a bit slow at times). My favorite songs from this movie are:
Hamari Shaadi Mein
Tere Dware Pe Aai Baraat
Do Anjaane Ajnabi
Tumblr media
The movie is 167 minutes long (2 hours and 47 minutes). Stream it with subtitles here, grab a snack, and enjoy!

this is my first smau! i'm still learning to do these, so I'm sorry if this was bad! the dupatta getting caught on lando's watch idea was a request by @justadesirebel and I'm so sorry it took me so much time to make this! but, anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed this! also, the title "aakhon mein teri" translated means "in your eyes" and I chose that because the scene in the movie when the actress' dupatta gets caught in the actor's watch, that's the song playing in the background! i've also got a link for my taglist that you can find here!

Things I Like About Being A Guy That Got Fat On Purpose.
I think after my last text post I should post something more positive in relation to weight gain. I have been gaining or at least trying to for several years but it wasn't until the pandemic that I really started to grow.
I am now about 210 ish, it fluctuates but it doesn't go lower than that. I'm also like 5'7 so i look 230+.I wear a size 38 x 32 in pants... but I might actually be at 40. I was wearing XL's in shirts but over the past 3 months I've been wearing XXL's. I do go for looser clothes otherwise L-XL would be fine. I think looser just works for me cuz I have generalized anxiety disorder and I need to feel like I can breathe so the looser the better. It's kind of funny how huge that sounds because the fit on my clothes is very regular despite my description of it being loose. I also feel like the way looser shirts drape over my body my boobs look a lot bigger, I mean they are but it's not so obvious when I’m shirtless but it's very noticeable when I’m clothed. I'm kinda self conscious but i've also gotten to the point where I don't really care. I also like that i'm wearing the last size that a lot of stores carry (which is probably going to be really annoying soon). I bought from a plus size store twice this year (it's still 2024 as of writing this) Once when buying a suit for a friends wedding and then I bought some random sweater. both fit and looked really good on me.
I feel more confident the bigger I get. I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe I just feel more sure of myself. Maybe when you're bigger you *have* to be more sure of yourself. I also think that after making content for so long I just dgaf about a lot of things. There really isn't anything that someone can say to me thats gonna make me not like myself or getting bigger. It's just kinda who I am now.
This is a somewhat recent observation and maybe it's a healthy one but, A lot of times as a gainer you are comparing yourself to other gainers. So you may be thinking things like "oh he eats so much more than me", or "I wish I was that big", or "I wish my capacity was bigger." however, if you compare yourself to someone who isn't a gainer you'll feel a lot bigger and you'll realize how you're eating like 5x more than a regular person, and doing so very easily. Regular people aren't eating whole pizzas, half a dozen burgers, liters of soda regularly. Regular people are likely trying to fit within a 2500 calorie diet range. A lot of gainers eat that before lunch lol. The first time I noticed this (I don't get out much) is when I was out with my friends a few months ago, we went to the movies, then dinner after. We went to an indian restaurant which obviously meant there was a lot of food. I really enjoyed it and I ate a lotttt but everyone else got full very quickly and had to get a to go box. I was the only one that didn't lol. (I need fat friends, or gainer friends irl, ik that's not possible for me rn tho).
Another thing is that people will want to cuddle you. You're just automatically considered to be more cuddly or huggable. People also seem to wanna squish me lol. one of my friends has rubbed my belly while cuddling in the movie theatre several times he's also grabbed my boobs so many times. so that's fun.
there's probably more things. lmk if I should write more. I’m gonna end this here. cuz i'm writing this on 0 sleep lol.

Fire (1996): A Mostly Spoiler Free Pitch Because You Should Watch It Immediately
It's time for "An Indian QL bulldozed past my expectations and I am reeling in awe", Part Two!
Tumblr media
A few days ago, @neuroticbookworm told me about Fire, an old lesbian Indian movie she'd been wanting to watch. Me being me, I promptly tracked it down and settled in to watch it.
Very loosely based on the 1942 short story Lihaaf, the movie follows Sita, a newly wed bride who is settling in with her in-laws, which is how she meets Radha, who is married to her husband's brother. Both in unhappy marriages, they find solace and company with each other, quickly falling in love. Length: 1 Hour 40 Minutes TWs: Homophobia, C-word mentioned once, some depictions of domestic violence Release: 1996
The is almost entirely in English, and while one generally expects Bollywood movies to be in Hinglish, it's definitely a conscious choice here, which does make me wonder if the movie was supposed to be promoted to a greater international audience. You can find it here on Youtube, most of the (very few) Hindi dialogues have hard subtitles. I think it's also available on Prime? It wasn't available in India though, which is odd, but I didn't bother investigating. Let me know if anyone can figure anything out about this!
Going into this movie, I expected a melodramatic, emotional movie with a bittersweet tone. I did not expect a biting, incredibly engaging movie with excellent satire, symbolism, discussions of chastity culture, and an incredibly sweet, beautifully written romance. And I was certainly not prepared for how incredibly horny this movie is??? Both in subtle tension and overt sex scenes. There's also partial nudity, which again, completely unexpected. If you're going taboo, go taboo all the way I suppose. It's also very well directed, and while I'm not nearly as good at identifying details like that as some of the people on here, I did pick up on some colour coding and interesting framing. It's just overall packed with little details that I think a lot of us would have a field day analysing.
Honestly, I could talk about the cultural nuances in this movie for hours. Contrary to my assumption about the reasoning behind making the movie fully in English, the movie seems to rely on the viewer's understanding of North Indian customs to deliver a lot of it's messages, particularly with its satire, more on that below. While I don't think it's necessary to enjoy the movie, it definitely does add some meat to the story. Then again, I'm a biased party, so it'll be hard to determine just how many messages may be lost to someone from outside of India without someone to compare notes with (this is me shamelessly trying to get you to watch the movie). Honestly, I'd be 100% down to write a more detailed, spoiler-including post that goes into the implicit nuances if people are interested.
There's two main selling points for the movie; the incredible way it shuts down purity and chastity ideology and the absolutely adorable relationship between Radha and Sita. The movie is set on ruthlessly tearing down and emphasizing the ridiculousness of purity culture. A lot of the messaging is indirect and uses metaphors, but there's also several explicit scenes addressing the issue. It's one of the main themes of the movie and I'm almost convinced the real reason it's titled 'Fire' is the sheer number of burns it dishes out on this subject. The romance portion of this movie is one of the thing's that completely defied my expectations. It wasn't sad and dramatic, it was heartfelt and silly and adorable. There's several scenes of the two subtly flirting, laughing together and just being lowkey in love. But that's not to say there's no emotional depth—they're also there for each other and are quite vulnerable with each other.
The movie used a lot of metaphors, but my favourites were the almost satirical representation of mythological stories. In a religion as diverse as Hinduism, every holiday has two dozen stories behind it and each story has two dozen versions, so it's to be expected that you'll find a number of problematic or otherwise kind of ridiculous stories in the mix. The stories were told completely seriously, but the context of the movie highlights their absurd facets in a truly brilliant way. I'm not going to give too much away, but I will say, it was a delight to watch the juxtaposition of the myths and the storyline of the movie, particularly it's ties to the purity culture discussion. You'll understand when you watch it. I'm not turning this into a Hindu mythology lesson (yet) but one interesting tidbit is that Radha and Sita are both names of mythological figures; namely the partners of two of the most worshipped avatars of the god Vishnu: Krishna and Rama respectively. And I was overjoyed to find that their names do have relevance to the metaphors in the story, particularly Sita's.
When the movie was first released, there were massive protests against it, I'm talking hundreds of people storming into theatres to destroy them and drive away audiences. I don't know what to say here beyond this, but what I will say is that I think Fire is an amazing movie that absolutely does not deserve to be lost to the sands of time. I hope you give it a shot, and if you do, tag me in any posts you make about it!
Tagging people who seemed interested in recs from my last post, let me know if you'd rather I not tag you!

The other arena where they truly excel is getting everyone and their whole extended family together in one place in the 3rd act for an elaborate unraveling of a comedy of errors. And that’s my shit!
If there’s one thing bollywood knows how to make it’s a road-trip movie 🚂 ❤️
