Diverse Stardew Valley 4.0 is officially here!
DSV 4.0 is a pretty different beast than 3.0+, and it’s bigger & better than ever 😆 The biggest difference is that we’re back on NexusMods and we’ve returned to an all-in-one download: the changes we made for 3.0 was the best move for the DSV team at the time, but things have changed in the last couple of years and we’ve updated accordingly.
DSV 4.0 also overhauls the interior of the mod with a shiny new C# engine, DSV Core, coded by the amazing KediDili. This should improve performance and make it much easier to configure DSV to your liking!
It’d take too long to list everything that 4.0 adds or changes, but here’s a quick summary:
Added over 250+ lines of variant-based dialogue
Added new additional variants which can be used alongside other variants:
Nonbinary Abigail, Sebastian, and Emily
Aro-Ace Gus
Jewish Mullners and Elliott
Hard-of-Hearing Haley
Added new small cultural map edits for modded variants
Re-added Marigold, Linus's service dog (this option requires Sprites in Detail, Custom NPC Exclusions, & Anti-Social NPCs) with improved higher-resolution sprites
Added new minor config options:
Mermaid Pendants - Rival Hearts & Canon Couples
Flower Queen's Crown Immersion Mode
Vanilla Beach Style
Enable Variant-Based Dialogue and individual dialogue toggles for each character
Abigail Goth Makeup
Elliott Helix Piercing & Ear Piercing
Penny & Pam Dynamic Outfits
Penny Freckles
Shane Punk Accessories
Marnie Dynamic Outfits
Clint Beard
Reworked character art for modded Pam, Black Haley & Emily, and modded Sikh and non-Sikh Harvey so that they have brighter, more accurate skintones
Clarified cultural backgrounds on the DSV website for several characters:
Romani Haley and Emily are of the Lovari vitsa
Black Haley and Emily have Ghanaian heritage
Indian Sandy is Deccani
Native Leah is of the Haida nation
Black Elliott has Jamaican heritage
Updated many outfits
Added compatibility with many mods
We also have a non-seasonal version for anyone who just wants the diversity edits (although it also contains some small tidbits for vanilla players such as improved beach art) and an add-on pack so that Always Raining in the Valley NPCs Sterling, Mia, and Henry can become Flower Queens through DSV’s Flower Queen’s Crown feature.
The DSV website has also been updated with visual guides to all of the new options, so please check it out! For any translators or mod authors interested in adding compatibility, there's also a new page with detailed instructions to help you out.
Thank you all for supporting DSV! 💖

The Jacket (Alexia Putellas x Reader)
Warnings: None
A/n: based off requests from a few people.
Prompt: in which you love to ride motorbikes, and Alexia always steals your leather jacket. One day, after a game, she comes onto the field wearing it proudly.
Alexia was incredibly proud of you, proud of what you were accomplishing as a striker, proud of what kind of person you were. So the reason you kept your relationship private from the public eye wasn’t because she was embarrassed- she had had to reassure you about that once- it was because of how rapidly you were both growing, and how adding the painful, but expected homophobia to that list of things that came with fame, wasn’t a good idea. You had been together for nine months now, and both the spain and the canadian squad knew, as well as the barca squad. Alexia’s family knew too, and proved to be parent figures to you. You had never been close with your parents, them being conservative and homophobic. But the Putellas’ had taken you in, and that was how you liked it.
There were five things in life that you loved to no end. In no specific order, although you told Alexia she was first- you loved your beautiful ballon d’or winning girlfriend, football, indian food, stupid looking dogs and your motorcycle. Your vehicle was your pride and joy, along with a leather jacket that you wore a bit too much. The specific jacket Alexia had decided would go perfectly with todays outfit. Barcelona was playing against Real Madrid, and you left to go meet the team and the bus at 2:00, the game was set to starts at 6:15, meaning a number of things, but mostly that the bus left at 3:00 to be at the stadium at 4:00. You quickly kissed Alexia goodbye, who was still in bed due to her having gone out with childhood friends and only coming back at 1:00 in the morning.
"Im going now baby." You said to her, gently pressing a kiss on her temple. Her eyes fluttered a bit, and you knew not to say anything important to her right now because she was barely awake. "Mhm… will I see you before the game?" She asked, mumbling the words. "Probably not love," you said, brushing her hair out of her face. "Good luck then. I love you." She said gently. "I have an alarm for you for 3:30. Don’t sleep too late." You told her. She nodded sleepily and you pressed your lips to her half open ones gently. She smiled slightly, and then drifted back to sleep.
You arrived at the training ground at 2:30, parking your car and walking towards the group of players waiting outside. Barcelona was perfect weather right now, you loved it, it reminded you of home. You headed towards Lucy and Keira, two of the only other players who were native english speakers. You loved your team, but sometimes miss communication got the best of you. But they all knew that when you stated cursing and yelling in french, a language almost no one else on the team spoke, to either stay away from you or come save whoever you were mad at because shit was about to hit the fence.
You did a handshake with Lucy and the same one with Keira, the three of you having gotten very close over your year and a half at barcelona. You smiled at the rest of the girls who waved and smiled back. "Alexia coming today?" Lucy asked. "Yeah. She’s sleeping though. Long night." You answered. Lucy and Keira shared a look, then looked back at you with a teasing smile. "Wha- No! No not like that! Not like-" You looked around, blushing furiously. "Not like sex…" You whispered to them. "So you guys haven’t had sex?" Keira said rather loudly. You basically pounced on her, covering her mouth with your hand. "Shush!" You squealed.
You had always been a private person, and the girls all liked to embarrass you any way they could. "So you have or you haven’t?" Lucy asked, earning giggles from the other group of girls beside you guys, including Alexia’s close friend, Mapi. "We- of course we’ve done it. We’ve been together for months!" You said to them, earning claps and cheers from the group beside you. "I hate you all!" You yelled at them, a smile on your face betraying your words. Mapi translated to some of the girls who laughed. You threw your hood over your head, your cheeks still bright red. "Ahh, we’re just teasing! We love you." Mapi said, coming over close to you and throwing her arm over your shoulder, looking at you and laughing.
You arrived at Johan Cruyff stadium on time, the entirety of the team pooling out of the bus and into the grounds. You examined the pitch, talked with the group and then went inside to go over the game plan. You changed into your training jersey and shorts, put on your socks and cleats, tied your hair and did your pre game routine which consisted of listening to your hype playlist and walking through the stands before the fans got there. You did a full circle of the stadium in the top row by yourself and then came back down. Only 15 minutes later, music started playing loudly, and 15 minutes after that, fans started arriving.
The team walked out onto the field, Lucy upholding her tradition of going out last, and when you ran out because you were a bit slow, you ran out with Lucy, her grabbing your hand. You walked towards the right side of the field where two groups were doing a rondo to warm up. But as always, since Alexia got injured, you found her in the crowd and nodded at her. She nodded back and you smiled at her softly. It was your thing. You wished you could blow her a kiss instead, but you weren’t public.
Then, sooner than you knew it, the game had started.
1-0 win, goal by you. A crazy headed that you had dived to get, ending up in the back of the net. It was perfect, the crowd went wild, your team was ecstatic, and Alexia was looking at you with so much pride you thought your heart would burst.
"That was quite the goal," Alexia said to you, walking up to you, and hugging you in the least 'I’m in love with you' way possible. You smiled at her as you pulled away, but you were quickly distracted by her outfit. Blue jeans, a white top, and your leather jacket. "Ale…" you started saying, smirking at her. "That’s my jacket." You said. "Yes it is. I thought it looked good." She said, smirking back. "It looks very good. But I wear that jacket all the time. And there are people taking pictures of us… right now." You said, finding a camera and pointing at it. " Everyone’s gonna know. The fans- they’re…" You started saying. "Stalkers?" She joked and you barked of laughter. "No! Well… yes. But they’re intuition is good. They’ll just know." You said. "Does it matter? I mean I know it’s not what we wanted by I want to be with you and have everyone know you’re mine. The whole world. Fuck what they say, mi amor." Alexia said. "Really?" You said. "Yeah. But let them figure it out first. For… what’s the expression you always say?" She asked. "For shits and giggles." You smiled. "Yes. I dont underhand it. But for that."
You were scrolling on your phone, it was a day after the game and your head head was on Alexia’s lap as she looked through her own phone. You were scrolling through your for you page on tik tok when you saw a video. It was a video of you that Ingrid had taken as you walked down the street wearing black jeans, a white cropped tank top and the leather jacket. Following that came a few pictures of you wearing the jacket. Then, was a video a fan had taken of you and Alexia talking on the field, followed by pictures from Barca’s instagram of Alexia on the pitch. The caption read: sharing clothes are they now? I think they’re dating.
All the comments were agreeing, and just to be a little cocky, you liked the video. "Hey, Ale. Look at this." You said.
She watched the video and when she was done, she smiled down at you and pressed a kiss to your forehead. "They know." She said.
"They know."

Oh Hai, I am going to Svalbard and thence on a ship into the ice - can you talk to me about whaling on the ice? I remember there were whaling stations in Greenland and possibly Iceland as well, where whales were brought be smaller ships for rendering, but that was never a big New England practice?
Oh, sounds chilly! I hope the excursion is all you wish for. Sorry for the incredibly long post--it got away from me! This is how I spent my evening! Sorry for any typos; it’s near 1 am.
Shore whaling isn't my forte so I can't speak much to that. There were whaling settlements set up on places like Herschel Island to support the industry as it stretched into the Arctic, though that's not quite the same as shore whaling stations. There were some 20th century ones up in the Arctic too, but again, not my forte.
I can talk about whaling on the ice, though. After 1848 when the commercial whaling fleet learned of bowheads, it pushed northwards in pursuit of them as the old whaling grounds were increasingly overfished.
A struck bowhead whale drawn by Captain Benjamin Boodry.
An anonymous letter published in the Quaker newspaper The Friend in 1850, written from the perspective of a Bowhead whale, offered up a rare perspective in opposition to the industry at this time:
“Although our situation, and that of our neighbors in the Arctic is remote from our enemy’s country, yet we have been knowing to the progress of affairs in the Japan and Ochotsk seas, the Atlantic and Indian oceans, and all the other “whaling grounds”. We have imagined that we were safe in these cold regions; but no; within these last two years a furious attack has been made upon us, an attack more deadly and bloody than any of our race ever experienced in any part of the world. I scorn to speak of the cruelty that has been practiced by our blood-thirsty enemies, armed with harpoon and lance; no age or sex has been spared.”
The expansion was both a detriment to the whales and a detriment to the men who hunted them. Many whalers were ill-prepared for the colder conditions, with often inadequate outfits purchased from the ship’s slop chest. Cases of scurvy (and death from such) increased significantly as months were spent in regions where the resupply of fresh produce wasn’t possible as it was in the South Pacific. The US Consul in Honolulu frequently commented on the condition of the men filling their hospital from a season up North, describing whalers who “died after reaching port and before they could be landed, while others were carried to the hospital on litters, being too feeble to walk.”
The whaling Bark Samboul, 1886. Via New Bedford Whaling Museum.
It also could be a psychologically bleak time as well. Allen Newman, captain of the Covington (1852-55, and 56-59) wrote:
“All this day a strong gale from the East with thick rainy weather, this is hard if I was alone I think I should be tempted to some rash act, such as Murder or Suicide, but I am surrounded with A plenty as poor as myself, misery loves company.”
Later he wished for all the things he couldn't have access to while bound up in fog and ice.
“hard gale from the North with cold Weather & A Bad Sea such is life on the Ocean. I Wish myself at Home with my Wife & Children, seated by A good fire & eating apples or I would willingly go Without the apples to be there O Lord watch over us keep us in health & give us Prosperity as the years rool round.. I hope to find myself with my family on some May morning & enjoying all the Blessings of A Happy Home.”
Benjamin Boodry, 2nd mate of the Arnolda (1852-55) also missed home after a failed attempt to catch Bowheads.
“Saw B[ow]Heads lowered without success chased all day came on board hungry and I am unhappy as a dog and homesick discontented wish I was at home I’d give all that I have got in the ship and run the risk of going naked or starving to death”
It wasn’t all misery, however. William Stetson, cabin-boy-to-foremast-hand on the Arab (1853-57) talked about some of the fun they had, too.
“We saw several bowheads but could get no where near them, and then all three boats penetrated farther into the ice, our boats crew all got out on a large cake of ice which was covered with snow, and enjoyed a little game of snow ball. To set foot anywhere out of the ship or boat soon on an ice cake in the Kamtschatka sea is very agreeable for a change; we enjoy ourselves among the ice, chasing seals and birds, snow balling, &c.”
Bowheads, with their battering ram heads designed to break through thick ice, knew their world far better than the new predators that just entered into it. In all instances, when pursued, they would make their escape attempt by running under the ice.
“Our officers were not very anxious to tackle them in the ice, as it needs an expert whaleman to handle them there,” wrote Albert Peck, greenhand on the Covington, the same voyage in which his captain was privately contemplating Murder And/Or Suicide and dreaming about home and hearths and apples. “As soon as one is struck he instantly makes for the compact ice and if he runs under, they are obliged to give him line til they can get the boat clear, and it often happens that before the boat can be cleared the line is gone, it being useless to try to hold it. Sometimes when he is running and they are holding on to the line [...] it will strike with its full force against a cake of ice, and if not very large and struck fairly with her stern, it will split and the boat will go between the pieces, but if not struck fairly then wo[e] to the boat. Often times the line will be cut or chaffed off against the ice, and then farewell Mr. Whale.”
Whaling wife Mary Lawrence on board the Addison (1856-60) described such a hunt, and the improvising whalers did when a whale ran under the ice.
“Our boats had not been down more than ten minutes before the whale came up between our bow boat and a boat from another ship. They both started for him, but our boat, having the best chance, struck. He ran under the ice soon after they fastened, but our brave crew were not going to give him up so, so two boats went around the other side of the ice to lance him and send him back, which they finally did after having quite an exciting time. Mr. Nickerson got out of his boat and went on to the ice to try to shoot him, while another boats crew from another ship landed and snowballed the whale, probably wounding him severely.”
The whale was ultimately killed by all this and brought alongside.
Bark Jacob A. Howland, trying out blubber among the ice. 1887. NBWM.
Benjamin Boodry, for all his misery as a 2nd mate on the Arnolda, would find himself up in the ice again as captain on his next voyage aboard the Fanny (1856-60). In icy regions he often described whaling happening in a ‘pond hole’, meaning a section of open water amidst all the ice floes. From the safety of said pond hole, he saw the peril that came with whaling in the Arctic.
“Comes in with light gales from East ship in a pond hole boiling with the Roman [another whaleship] thick and plenty of snow and verry heavy swell at ½ past 7 came to the N side of the pond hole it lighted some saw the wreck of a vessel about 2 miles in the Ice dismasted and the ship Brutus lying by her the swell being to heavy dare not venture through the Ice as the Brutus was there to render all assistence in saveng life poor fellows I pitty them God only knows whose turn it will be next this is a dangerous way of getting an honest living at 8 saw a large light set supposed to be on board of the wreck I wonder what poor fellow it is Middle and latter part blowing spoke Capt Henry of the Brutus haveing Capt Sherman and crew of Bark Newton on board there vessel being stove in the Ice he belongs in Rochester town and has lost his wife since he sailed and now has lost his vessel take my vessel but save me my Little Mary”
Getting wrecked by ice was the greatest risk in the region. At one point the Addison found itself almost entirely bound up in ice, and Mary described the anxiety of the scene.
"The first flow of ice that came to us was not bad, quite thick but considerably broken up. After that it came on pretty bad. We were obliged to have men out on the ice cutting our way along, until we came to a field that was impossible to get through. Just then there came on a slight breeze, so that we slipped out anchor, and turning around a little, we cleared all of that except the point. Then we put down our large anchor and drifted through the remainder, some of which was very heavy, solid field ice two miles in length. After cutting, spading, sawing, and pulling with ropes, we finally worked through the last of it about four o’clock in the morning. It was a night of hard work and anxiety. We were afraid mostly of staving our ship again. There was also danger of dragging our anchor and going ashore."
Thomas Howes Norton, captain of the whaleship the Citizen (1852), found his ship less fortunate in navigating the ice.
“Ice was all around us, which would have passed us on the larboard bow, and thus we should have escaped a concussion; but instead of doing this he put the wheel down, which brought the ship into the wind and the consequence was a large hole was stoven in her larboard bow; the ship began to leak badly. Casks were immediately filled with water, and placed on the starboard side of the ship, and thus in a measure heeled the ship, which brought the leak to a considerable extent out of the water; otherwise she must have sunk in a very little time.”
While the crew of the Citizen would patch the damage made on that instance, it wouldn’t help them for long. Their ship would be utterly destroyed in a gale in the Arctic Ocean in September 1852, with five lives lost and thirty-three men stranded ashore with little to protect them.
Wreck of the Citizen, via Library of Congress.
While stranded, those thirty-three men were assisted by the local Yupik people and lived with them for nine months before eventually being brought home by two New England whalers.
It was the Arctic that played a huge role in finishing the American whale fishery, too. In 1871, thirty-three American whaling vessels were unexpectedly bound up in pack ice off Alaska. Their collective crews (and families aboard) reflected 1219 lives suddenly plunged into mortal peril. All the captains came together and signed a statement of what they all agreed to do:
"We, the undersigned, masters of whaleships now lying at Point Belcher, after holding a meeting concerning our dreadful situation, have all come to the conclusion that our ships cannot be got out this year, and there being no harbor that we can get our vessels into, and not having provisions enough to feed our crews to exceed three months, and being in a barren country, where there is neither food nor fuel to be obtained, we feel ourselves under the painful necessity of abandoning our vessels, and trying to work our way south with our boats, and, if possible, get on board of ships that south of the ice."
They set their ensigns upside-down, took to their whaleboats, and abandoned the whole endeavor to the Arctic.
Image from Harpers Weekly 1871, of some of the whaleships bound up in ice and the crews evacuating.
Through heavy swells and ice they rowed, hoping to make it to open water where other ships from the fleet might be there to save them. It took them near 90 miles to reach the rest of the fleet, who readily brought them all aboard and returned everyone home at the expense of their own voyages. Remarkably, not a single life was lost in this event. But all but one of the trapped whaleships were crushed by the ice. With the industry already staggered by the discovery of petroleum and by losses during the Civil War when Confederate raiders made a point to target the whaling fleet, this massive loss was the final nail in the coffin for American whaling. Beyond that event, wrecking in the ice became a fate for many a whaleship in the last couple decades of the 19th century.

🐾🍕🥝🎃🧸♥️ 🥀🎉🥑🍐🍑🎲
For Anitha + Ria + Mila
🐾Do they have a pet? What are they, and what's their name?
Anitha:
Her magickal familiar (its not a pet, its a partner) is a Lumian she named Candy. In my HC, after she and Griffin get married, they have a golden retriever named Apollo and a grey tabby cat named Artemis
Ria:
She has a pet hamster named Kiki, but after she and Maria move in together, they would have a cat named Luna
Mila:
She has a pet dog named Snowy, but in future she and Skye would adopt a black cat (haven't decided on the name yet)
🍕What's their guilty pleasure food?
Anitha:
For magickal food, it would be prophecy O's with warm milk. Tuneless food would be indian food, but her favourite is Chole Bature.
Ria:
She enjoys her dad's fried chicken, and sometimes can't resist taking more. Another added favorite would be the mint coffee that Maria makes, for a rigourous study session
Mila:
Mila enjoys spicy food more than sweets, especially ramen noodles, with egg in it. Classic comfort food after a long day in theatre.
🥝Do they have a food allergy or food they hate?
Anitha:
In high school, Anitha started loading up on protein shakes and bars to increase her strength for the soccer season, but she ended up overloading on them and it resulted in a very bad stomach pain. Since then she had steered away from protein supplements and would not touch them
Ria:
Ria does not like oatmeal. It reminds her of hospital food and chemotherapy and that makes it enough for her to throw up
Mila:
Mila has a certain cringe towards ice cream after 'accidentally' witnessing the Cedar Cove challenge, and the experience has permanently ruined ice cream for her.
🎃What would their Halloween outfit be?
(I would be to work on edits for Halloween costumes for the 3 of them, keep an eye out for the posts yet to come)
Anitha:
Every year, Anitha likes to dress up as a witch for Halloween. She was made fun of that by a neighbour kid that she did not realize that she made a branch drop on top of him. She thought that she really had witch powers (but little did she know she actually had them, but that's after many years)
Ria:
Ria always loved colorful things as a kid, so Scott used to bring her different kinds of wigs and she would dress up as a different princess each year. Her favorite, however was Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
Mila:
Mila's favorite Halloween costume would be a vampire, considering she starts reading a lot of vampire novels, plus Skye liked vampire fictions, it was a perfect fit.
🧸Do they have a stuffed animal or item they've kept from when they were a kid?
Anitha, Ria and Mila are all suckers for stuffed animals. Knowing them, they must have kept an entire collection in their closets as kids.
♥️Favorite color?
Anitha:
She loves sun based/bright colors like Red, yellow or orange
Ria:
Ria likes all the colors. But she feels that green and blue suits her the most.
Mila:
She has always liked shades of pink, but got obsessed with black and red over a period of time.
Check below for NSFW
🥀Do they have a favorite position?
Anitha: Being on the top
Ria: Being the bottom
Mila: Fisting
🎉Say it's their love interests' birthday, how would they celebrate it~?
Anitha:
She and Griffin would go on a nature hike, find a waterfall or a river to camp out, go for a swim (where things get really heated up), make a bonfire, have dinner and stargaze.
Ria:
Ria would book a honeymoon resort for the two of them, and after the celebrations, they would go and have a kinky time.
Mila:
The way to appease Skye's heart would be going to different haunted places or a rock concert and getting drunk and making out.
🥑What are some of their random kinks/fetishes?
Anitha: Being the dom
Ria: Bondage
Mila: Tits
🍐Say they wanted to look sexy for their partner, what sort of outfit would they wear?
Anitha:
Easy, Griffin thinks that Anitha looks sexy in her thief uniform. Especially after a game or a practice session when she is high on adrenaline and is sweating. (Sorry I don't have the screenshot reference, I had to delete a bunch of photos cause my phone couldn't handle it)
Ria:
Ria would either wear shorts or low cut dresses, if she is in the mood for looking sexy. I think a good reference would be the beach outfit in bk 3
Mila:
Mila would be wearing this, cause Skye thinks she is damn sexy as a goth
🍑How did they react to having their "first time?" And was their partner understanding if they were nervous?
Anitha:
Anitha was pretty confident when she and Griffin had sex for the first time. Both were experienced with hookups so it wasn't exactly new to them. They knew what they were doing and no nervousness was involved.
Ria:
I guess Ria would be pretty nervous for their first time, and be more hesitant. Maria is a pretty understanding person, and would not take things too far until Ria was ready for that kind of thing.
Mila:
After they graduate college, Mila and Skye celebrate by going to a concert, and they get really drunk and almost end up hooking up in a secluded alley, when Skye hesitated for a bit and stopped with the kissing. Mila took the hint, and both backed out before anything else would happen.
🎲Random Question chosen by the poster~♡
🥧Have they ever had a one-night stand when they were drunk?
Anitha:
Anitha rarely drinks, and even if she drank she is going to be sober enough to not have a one-night stand while drunk.
Ria:
Ria and Maria both have a decent control of how much they drink, and even if they did get heavily drunk, it never led to a one night stand
Mila:
After the almost fiasco of their first time, Mila and Skye make sure that they don't drink too much to lose all sense of control.

Throwback Thursday, Fandom Edition: "It's Slinkster Cool"
I wrote a fan letter to Francesca Lia Block when I was 13.
I also enclosed a hand-drawn "family tree" depicting the interconnected relationships in her Weetzie Bat series, the omnibus edition of which I would eventually read and reread so many times that it literally cracked in half. I mentioned two family members in my letter, but at some point, I shared the series with Younger Sister as well. A couple of months ago, she went on a work trip to Los Angeles, and told us after returning that she'd looked around for landmarks from Weetzie Bat.
As a young reader, I was enthralled, not only by the lush descriptions of food and outfits and city streets that filled those books, but by their inherent sense of wonder and appreciation for creativity and chosen families, and by the version of adulthood that they seemed to offer. Maybe I didn't want to go to clubs or star in movies or learn to surf when I grew up, but I was very attached to the idea of sharing a beautiful house with all my friends, and maybe some adorable dogs, where we'd create the art that we loved and – to quote Missing Angel Juan, my favorite book in the series – live like "kids playing in the street before they have to go in for dinner." The life I eventually built hasn't always been like that, but I'm lucky to have experienced moments that feel similarly satisfying.
As with many childhood favorites, I can find a lot to criticize about Block's writing when I look back on it now, and so can other people. In 2013, Debbie Reese wrote about the questionable Native American representation in the Weetzie Bat books on her incredible American Indians in Children's Literature blog. James Frankie Thomas*, in an installment of his 2019 "YA of Yore" column, discussed the uncomfortable body issues that recurred across Block's canon (there's your content warning for eating disorders), as well as some of the limitations of the remarkable-for-its-time queerness in her books. But he also talks about why her work was genuinely appealing to so many readers, and I found myself nodding along with his observation that "Block’s style flattens magic into the everyday and imbues the everyday with magic... by the grace of luck, Block made it seem cool to be swooningly, squealingly excited about everything." I did include the phrase "sappy as that may sound" in my letter, but I like to think that Francesca Lia Block, of all authors, wouldn't be put off by sincerity.
She eventually wrote back to me, on a postcard that is now barely legible: "Thank you for the cool project and your note. I really appreciate it."
*Since writing the column, Thomas has come out as trans, and his byline and author bio reflect this, but the "YA of Yore" tagline still uses his old name and the pronoun "her." If you want to read his related essays, I recommend them, particularly the one about Animorphs, anoher beloved series that I talked about a couple of weeks ago.

Once, years ago, Milltown was a fishing village and a lumber town. There was a tribe of Natives just outside the city limits. Years went by and the place changed and grew. It never lost that western waterfront feeling though. Salt water and trees and a college. That’s what I have heard. I wasn’t born until 2010. Lou emerged into the kitchen in her current fave outfit. She looked a little like a scarecrow. Extremely distressed jeans, no hem just shreds. One of dad’s hoodies with some kind of hoohah printed on it about a tractor company, over a plaid man’s shirt and all covered in one of Mom’s weird fleece jackets. Shoes were Keds. OK. She had jammed her curls into a scrunchie hair thing, had on some vintage shades and was ready to go. I don’t scare easily so I was fine with it. I had on my battle dress uniform. Jeans, no holes. A big grey sweatshirt and over that a pea coat, old white trainers. Hair up in a ponytail. I stuffed four of those pink boiled eggs in my pockets. Ready to roll. I locked the back door, pulled the kitchen curtains closed. I glanced around. Home. Hm. Home is where the heart was. My sister and I passed out the front door. I turned and locked the door. I felt like something was changing. I was not sure why. Just shutting the door felt almost final. It was still early in the day, like ten AM. Grey clouds covered the sky. It had been raining during the night. No surprises there. Our lawn was a shaggy mess. No one bothered with lawns anymore. Down the walk. Past the mailbox. We almost never get any mail, but I looked just to make sure. Nothing. Just as we walked out onto the narrow two lane asphalt the sun broke through the clouds, brilliantly, like it does when you are used to the dim light of morning around here. The whole road shone golden. Surely a good sign. Down the golden road we must travel. “Turn your face to the sun.” Two miles is not very far to walk. We passed by our old neighbor’s houses. I recited each name as we came across their places. Erickson’s white house. No one lives there now. Steele’s red house. One old lady is still living there with her dog. She stays home. People bring her supplies. A few more places where we didn’t remember who had lived there. Overgrown lawns. Huge bushes near the houses and unpruned roses surrounded the houses where once people had lived and worked. We passed the Gustafsons two story brick house. The fruit trees had not been tended to for several years. Did I know that it was a gloomy scene? Maybe not really. It was the new normal. Lou piped up, “Jen, there is a dog following us.” Glancing back, I saw that she was correct! There was quite a big dog on the road behind us. He was not familiar to me. He stopped about twenty feet away when we stopped. He appeared to be a German Shepherd mix, mixed with some other really big kind of dog. He had a black muzzle and tan body and one ear up and one ear down. We used to call those Indian dogs because you would see them around the Reservation. The dog sat on the pavement watching me. They sense who is the boss, right? I squatted down on one knee and called to him. “Hey, Buddy, come here…” I noticed that his sides were thin, and his fur looked a bit messy. “Want an egg, Buddy?” I coaxed. I pulled one out of my pocket and started to peel it for him. That got his attention in a big way. He stood and approached
slowly, tail waving. This was a big dog. He was taller than a regular German Shepherd. The pink eggshell bits lay scattered on the wet asphalt. The bright light of the sun was shining into his
very aware looking brown eyes. I was not fearful of this big dog at all. He came to me then and took the egg. He didn’t mind the shell that I hadn’t peeled off yet. He put it on the road surface, looked up at me, then carefully ate it. I peeled him another egg then. I guessed that his name was Buddy now. I guessed we had a friend for now. Lou walked over and stood with us and patted his head. I did too. He seemed to like the attention. “OK, Buddy”, I said. “We have to keep going.” Lou smiled then, like I had not seen her smile in quite a long time.
Hi This Is LouJen was strutting along up there like she was on a mission from God. She had these long spidery legs like a boy. Her ponytail was almost swinging in complete circles! That’s how crazy she was. The sun was in my eyes, and I was hungry. She always said I was fat. She treated me like I was retarded. I was not fat, I had a waist and looked more like a woman than she did. Ha. You can’t believe everything she tells you!
Someone had trained Buddy. I wished I knew his real name. I bet it wasn’t Buddy. Hopefully not King or Rex. He stayed right at my left side. Sometimes he would stuff his big black muzzle in my hand, reassuringly. Sometimes he would glance back to make sure that Lou was still back there. He would stop and I would stop, and we would wait for her to catch up. I knew she didn’t like walking very much. She was a tired looking small figure in funny clothes. I loved her so much. Except for Buddy, she was it, all I had. We had to cross a bridge over the river, and it was pretty steep. Our trip into Milltown was because we had to pick up our funny money. The State gives unemployed people a little money. It doesn’t look real. It comes in little books. To use a bill, you tear it out of the book. If there is change due, we get it in old coins. They were still in circulation. There isn’t any record keeping really. We weren’t important enough to keep track of much. They hand these out at the Post Office. Our names were on a list. We could buy a few things to carry home then. The river is cleaner than it used to be. There was no industry left making it dirty. It was about thirty feet down to the water. Looking over, we could see one guy fishing a little upstream. I was not sure that I would want to eat whatever he was catching. I waved; Lou smiled. We didn’t see many young guys. Now the sidewalk began. Power poles and streetlights. Stapled onto one of the power poles was large sheet of red paper with the word “NO” spray painted on it, in white. We looked at each other and laughed. NO, what? Might have had something to do with the news yesterday. Next, we noticed stenciled words on the sidewalks. Somebody had been making a trail of these stencils. They said “Follow Me” in more white spray paint. We started to look for them all the way to the Post Office. On every block, there were two or three of these stenciled messages. Things were starting to get interesting. Who did this? The Post Office was one street over from Main. I went in and gave our names, leaving Lou outside leaning on the window, watching the street, hanging out with Buddy. Walking back out, I carefully put our little books of funny money in the inside pocket of my pea coat. Some Kind of Shopping Lou was tired, I could see that. She was crouched down, resting, and leaning on Buddy who braced, sitting under the load. “Come on you two, we have to go to the so called store”

Panic of 1907
STOCK MARKET CRASHES. EXCHANGE IN FREEFALL. ECONOMY ON EDGE.
Traders and economists are reeling after the stock market continued to collapse this week. Those in banking circles say we are witnessing the largest evaporation in wealth ever recorded. Cries of anguish were heard on the streets of lower Manhattan as the stock exchange continued to erupt into a frenzy and bankers rushed to find some way to subdue the panic.
Some speculate the panic on Wall Street was made to order by big capitalists in order to depress values and allow them to reap a rich harvest when the rise returns. However, some have claimed it foolishness that a banker would will a panic, likening it to a farmer wishing for a drought or a sailor praying for a typhoon. The banker, despite being opulent in wealth, thrives from stability.
Bankruptcy claims are being filed by the dozens of large institutions, however, as New York banks are protecting the situation by holding money out of circulation. Congress has already promised to investigate these national banks and review their conduct, though no charges are expected.
Pump Jacks Sit Silent
NO OIL FOUND AT WAPITI. INVESTORS ALLEGE FRAUD.
The oil reserves discovered on land near the Wapiti Indian Reservation in 1899 have turned up dry, and all drilling operations have ceased and packed up. There were high hopes for the location following a detailed explanation by the Leland Oil Development Company on behalf of Cornwall Kerosene & Tar, and a number of petroleum outfits have sought to develop it into a well-paying field.
Workers flocked to the area in anticipation of jobs that would pay as much as 22 cents an hour. Companies sank well after well, coming up empty with only a miniscule amount of oil being found, not enough to keep operations running. The tribe at the reservation went on the run after a series of attacks on the army, culminating in a bloody battle at the Cornwall Kerosene & Tar factory around the time news of the oil discovery became known.
Many members of the tribe were gunned down in Wyoming, but a few members are believed to have escaped into Canada. It is unknown what will happen to the Indian Reservation land moving forward as there are no Indians in the area to relocate there currently.
Small Farms Disappearing
SWALLOWED BY LARGE CATTLE INTERESTS. LARAMIE CORP OFFERING BUYOUTS.
A sense of unease and uncertainty has arisen among landowners as a wave of real estate speculation is sweeping through cow country and large cattle outfits are offering large sums for small ranches. Headed by Abel Atherton, the Cattle Association seems intent on remaking the West, having recently acquired Hanging Dog Ranch and a considerable number of acres around Strawberry.
Property agents from The Laramie Corporation are visiting small farm owners offering large sums under their new economic model. While opponents say a way of life is perishing, others argue that America is a country of progress and those clinging to the homesteader ideal are firmly stuck in the past. Scale, they say, will always win out.
President Waxman Hails Progress, Discusses Canal
IMMIGRANTS FLOODING ELLIS ISLAND. 1.1 MILLION EXPECTED THIS YEAR. ALSO DISCUSSES BUILDING PANAMA CANAL.
Speaking to a packed crowd in New York, President Thaddeus Waxman announced that this year is set to see the largest number of immigrants ever recorded passing through Ellis Island. The promise of this great land is known far and wide, he said, and over a million immigrants are expected to arrive in New York in 1907, greatly eclipsing previous years. The President also announced that Col. William Thomas Kirchner would be the chief engineer of the Panama Canal project, one of the largest construction projects in memory.
The project was taken over by the United States from France three years ago amongst high worker mortality rates. It is thought that the American tradition of hard work and architecture superior to that of the French will allow the grand project to be completed on time and below budget.
It has been one of the President's main initiatives since he took office after President Macalister's assassination. When asked about the large number of people coming to America, Waxman said all immigrants should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.
Romance Novel Proves Best Seller
OVERNIGHT SUCCESS. AUTHOR LESLIE DUPONT'S FOURTH TOME PROVING VERY SUCCESSFUL.
The thrilling romance novel "Lady of the Manor", published under the pen name Leslie Dupont, is difficult to find in bookshops, owing to its massive popularity, especially among young girls and the elderly. Her novels have arguably been read by more people than anything that has been produced by any contemporary writer, although critics dislike her work enormously.
Miss Dupont's books are lurid and steamy and weave tales of licentiousness and thievery, love and deceit, murder and mayhem, lust and despair. It is claimed many of her tales are from the author's torrid past, although Miss Dupont has never herself commented. It has been alleged that she once consorted with outlaws and gunslingers on the frontier. She has always been unwilling to corroborate these rumors.
Bounties Beware
LANGTON IS HOT ON THE TRAIL.
From the words of those he's chased down, James Langton is relentless, cunning and fearless. Known for his sizeable frame and ten gallon hat, the bounty hunter from New Austin is the best in the country, running down outlaws and flushing out bandits. With a small army now working for him, law enforcement are happy to hand over their dirty work to Langton and his crew.
He captured the Dillard Brothers with the help of a pair of twin prostitutes. He killed Cecile Montgomery while he sat trapped on the commode. Sheriffs say, "Crooks beware, Langton is coming after you."
Man's Tropical Enemy
GERMS OF LAZINESS. HOOKWORM PLAGUES WARMER CLIMES.
For many years, the lethargy of residents in the South was thought to be due to the "germ of laziness." It is now known that the anemia that plagues warmer climes of the United States is the direct result of a parasite that lives in the gut known as hookworm. A major outbreak occurred in 1902 in Cornish mines, and in the coal mines of France, Germany, and Belgium the affliction is quite common. The worm is half an inch long and its mouth armed with teeth.
They attach by the thousands to the inside of the intestines, sucking blood, moving from place to place and leaving bleeding wounds subject to infection. As to how the affliction takes place, there is by no means unanimity of opinion by medical men. Some think it to occur by penetration of the skin on dirt floors or fouled drinking water. The malady is especially a scourge to residents of the Philippines and Puerto Rico whose residents' health and welfare we are now responsible for.
Radio Miracle
MUSIC TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE AIR. SHIPS RECEIVE BROADCAST.
Written dispatches from the coast of Massachusetts report a novel experiment transpired recently. Using an experimental alternator-transmitter at Brant Rock, technicians broadcast radio signals carrying the music from a phonograph record of Handel.
The transmission was intended for shipboard radio operators at sea, especially the Navy, who have taken to the new technology for daily transmissions of time signals and weather reports via Morse Code. The scientists working on the radio experiment hail it as a new dawn in entertainment and foresee a day where bible devotionals and hymns are transmitted into the home for families to enjoy.
A Rotting Jewel
FORGOTTEN, FORLORN LAKAY
Lakay was a bustling settlement teeming with fish, wildlife, and people who came to make a life there. Today it sits abandoned since the massive shootout between outlaws and Pinkertons in 1899. Located in the swamps of Bayou Nwa, North of Saint Denis, the site was used as a gang hideout in the past. Locals are said to avoid Lakay entirely, saying that it is under some voodoo curse and that any who enter are plagued with bad luck and disease.
Voodoo dances were said to occur there, a heathenish mode of worship where fanatics wail and perform rituals often involving blood and animals.
New Railroad Completed
A GRAND PROJECT OUR MANIFEST DESTINY
The final ties were laid and spikes driven through to complete the Central Union rail line stretching through New Hanover. Passengers will be able to bypass the Grizzlies, Rhodes, and Scarlett Meadows, drastically reducing travel time. Now with a direct line connecting Cornwall Kerosene and Tar and Saint Denis, freight and commuters will flow fast and freely.
The project came with complications, including controversy over missing workers' wages and a land dispute. Representatives from towns such as Van Horn Trading Post and Annesburg say the new line will result in the decline of their towns. Civic planners hail the railroad as a new dawning day in American progress and history.
The Art of Angling by Jeremy Gill
REDFIN PICKEREL.
When not entertaining heads of state with the joyful pastime of fishing, 1 traipse into backwoods "cricks" and “hollers” where I meet the most delightful, simple folk who imbibe strong local spirits and gush about Redfin Pickerel. These uncouth semi-savages claim it to be the best eating fish you can find, and for that matter, the easiest to catch. They are feisty little predators that will attack a piece of cheese, and as one old-timer showed me, a piece of red cloth.
He'd dip it into the crick, the fish would bite and he'd sling it up onto the bank with a toothless laugh. Happy fishing, for those of you with and without a full complement of teeth.

I had long weird dream but I write this part only:
I was cleaning empty small block apartment, hearing how neighbor got some visitors. I then heard some surprised screams, calling someone to come back. Soon small dog ran to me in my apartment (since I had left the front door open). I smiled at it, continuing to wash the floors on my knees until I noticed the dog became restless. I said: “You won’t do your business here. We go out.”
I took the dog out, 2 women coming with me. Older woman was worried if the dog would shit on this small garden area but I assured her I won’t let that happen so I took the dog further away - coming on the little hill, made of sand and rust red rocks.
Beneath was small open space between red canyon walls and on the open space stood half naked Native American Indian male. He kept watching me with super kind smile on his face. My heart instantly jumped with so strong joy! I started to approach him with the dog, noticing his lovely milk chocolate colored skin, black long hair, his native outfit with feathers, jewels and other items. But what also caught my attention was the fact he had this glowing pure white katana with scabbard on his waist. All his clothes were pure white as well, glowing too.
When I stopped in front of him, we spent small moment just smiling and staring at each other. He then, telepathically, told me:
“New doors are opening for you. He is near you.” (meant my future spouse)
He also mentioned it how I am growing. All this made me so happy and relieved that I started to cry. He kept smiling as he lifted the dog up in his arms, the dog transforming into something else (didn’t see it but felt it). He walked past me, I spinning around after him since I wanted to ask him is there something I need or should do to grow better, faster etc. But he was gone already.
I heard his voice in my head after I noticed black small number on the red rocky wall. It was either 73, 75 or 76 (can’t remember anymore) but above it was small 3. He told me I should use my all instead of using just a little bit of myself. Like if I’m using 100%, he encouraged me to use my 300%.
He also said something weird about that 300% and how I should use division (calculation) on that with the number I found on the wall. The answer can’t be 100 but it has to be 75 for example. After the calculation I should know the % number I’m using but it won’t be 100%. I’m using under 100% aka I’m going at sub-round (not overdrive what I probably should be going on / at). It’s hard to explain.
Then I woke up.
