SAMबहादुर (2023) 👌🇮🇳
This provided a refreshing departure from the mass cinema. Vicky Kaushal's portrayal of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was the standout element, delivering an exceptional performance.
Meghna Gulzar's direction stood out, utilizing natural light and scenery with a simple yet elegant style. The script and dialogues were commendable.
As the biopic was centered on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, the movie excelled in showing his story. And kudos to Vicky Kaushal, he excelled in embodying the character through his appearance, style, and dialogue delivery. He truly nailed his character.
In the realm of patriotic films, it was gratifying that the movie kept song numbers to a minimum, featuring only 2, with noteworthy references to Indian Army regiments in the song "Badhte Chalo".
While the film lacked some thrilling moments and the aging portrayal of Sam in the second half fell short, requiring more effective makeup, overall, it made for a compelling watch.

ok. rrr is the first and only indian movie i have seen in my life. do you have any recs for movies like it? or just movies you like? i trust your taste and my summer is long.
Ofc! Here's a list of some of my favorites:
Telugu
Magadheera (2009)
One of SS Rajamouli's older works and Ram Charan and Kajal absolutely stole my heart in this one. The music is still the loml and it actually also had MM Keeravani directing music
Harsha is falsely implicated for killing Indu's father and she too is kidnapped. But Harsha and Indu share a bond from a previous life, and when he realises this, he sets out to set things straight.
Jai Lava Kusa (2017)
This is one of my all time favorite NTR Jr. movies and he actually plays a triple role (identical triplets)
Identical triplets, Jai, Lava and Kusa, get separated at a young age and follow different paths in life. Jai becomes an evil criminal, Kusa becomes a small-time crook and Lava becomes a bank manager.
Dear Comrade (2019)
TW: sexual assault
This is a movie I hold rly rly close to my heart A) cuz Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika are love and B) the plot was so important especially near the climax.
A hot-headed student union leader falls in love with a state-level cricketer; but soon, his anger issues become a roadblock on his way to unite with her.
Shyam Singha Roy (2021)
If I were ever to marry anyone, Shyam is my template for that person. I absolutely loved Nani's depiction of Shyam and Sai Pallavi's Rosie. Also reincarnation but there's a twist
Vasu is a director who left his former job to make films. His girlfriend is set to play the lead role, but when she is molested and Vasu is accused of committing plagiarism, the young couple's fortunes take a turn for the worse.
EDIT: I'm dumb. I forgot to add Baahubali 1 and 2 (2015 and 2017) which is a must watch and one of the first major modern Pan-India movies
Hindi
The Kashmir Files (2022)
If you're going to watch a Hindi movie, make it this one. This tells the unheard story of the genocide of millions of Kashmiri Pandits by Islamic Terrorists and this genocide has taken place time and time again with absolutely zero media attention.
Shush Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan (2020)
I couldn't have left a list of Indian movies I made in Pride Month without mentioning this movie could I? Ayushmann Khurrana is one of my favorite Hindi actors and the representation in this movie was solid imo. Tbh I live for the song Mere Liye Tum Kaafi Ho in this movie
When two men, Kartik and Aman, fall in love with each other, they face opposition from Aman's family but they attempt to win them over.
3 Idiots (2009)
This one is a classic and works to reverse the mindset a lot of Indian students have to deal with where life = studying and parents' expectations without real time for themselves. As a student it was relatable to me and again, it was fucking hilarious.
In college, Farhan and Raju form a great bond with Rancho due to his positive and refreshing outlook to life. Years later, a bet gives them a chance to look for their long-lost friend whose existence seems rather elusive.
Shershaah (2021)
A biopic of the real life Vikram Batra, I absolutely fell in love with this movie and rediscovered my love for Siddharth Malhotra (the main actor). The music for this movie >>>>
The life of Indian army captain Vikram Batra, awarded with the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest award for valour for his actions during the 1999 Kargil War.
Tamil
Heads up: I don't actually speak Tamil (not well anyways) so I'm just listing movies I saw and liked but I haven't actually seen as many as w telugu/hindi
3 (2012)
I think this intensified my love for Dhanush by about 10000. The music is why Anirudh Ravichander is one of my absolute favorite Indian singers
Ram and Janani are high school sweethearts who eventually get married; however, Janani is mystified when Ram commits suicide all of a sudden and she tries to find out the truth behind his death.
Theri (2016)
And the other love of my life, Vijay Thalapathy. I think this is the first movie of his that I saw with my friend and I honestly got pissed at her for gatekeeping him for so long so that should tell you a lot
When his daughter's life is endangered by a local gang, a man will do whatever it takes to stop them; however, at the same time, his dangerous past slowly resurfaces.
Wow ok this is a lot longer than I intended and I was just getting started lmao but hopefully you find something interesting. If anyone else wants to add other movies feel free to rb, comment and obv feel free to add more languages.

Gunjan Saxena — a Refresher on Women’s Place in the Military
The following is a piece by editor Radha Raheja
Content Warning: Misogyny, Sexual Assault
The Janhvi Kapoor-starrer “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl” hit our Netflix screens this August. Succinct but erudite, this biopic is based on the life of one of the first female officers in the Indian Air Force, portraying Saxena’s struggles with sexism during her early days in the Force, leading up to the 1999 Kargil War.
Though she is (spoiler alert) successful in gaining the respect of her fellow colleagues by the end of the film, Saxena’s experience raises some important questions about women in defence positions. In February this year, the Supreme Court passed a landmark judgement allowing women officers to occupy commanding roles in the army, also extending other benefits previously reserved for men. Twenty years after the Kargil War, this is a welcome move, especially in light of the Central Government’s remarks opposing it. I count it as one of the few high points in the news cycle this year.
The movie shows both Gunjan and her brother being treated equally by their father — both receive his support in pursuing their dreams. But I am still struck by the words her brother says to her before she leaves for her first posting — “The world Papa has shown you is very different from the real world… the world sees officers [separate from] girls”.
And this world-view is evident as the movie progresses. The organisational structure of her IAF base doesn’t accommodate a second gender, and in turn allows existing male officers to exercise discriminatory control over Gunjan’s work and position. This ordeal is portrayed as curtly as possible, with the necessary highs and lows for dramatic purposes. It’s enough to make you root for the heroine but the movie leaves out any mention of something just as rampant but more harrowing — sexual assault in the defence forces.
A 2015 study involving 450 employees of the Indian Army reported that the behaviour of higher-ranking officers perpetuated crimes against female officers — among these were sexual harassment, assault, and rape. Twelve women reported such crimes between 2015-2017. However, taking into consideration the national average of unreported assault cases shown in government-released data, it is more than likely that the actual number may have been higher.
In the rare event that justice is served in due course, the conditions of said justice are arbitrary. As in the case of ex-Major General MS Jaswal, it is the Army whom General Court Martial officers must answer to, and receive final orders from. In this case, the orders amounted to a dismissal from duty and as per our research, no other judicial action was taken.
It is worth noting that the scope of this article is only around the condition of female officers in the Force, officers who are slowly walking shoulder-to -shoulder with their male colleagues. I leave speculation regarding similar crimes perpetuated outside the Forces up to the sensibilities of the reader.
Critics are lauding Gunjan Saxena as a war film unlike any other, for it rarely delves into the realms of hardcore nationalism or jingoism. It is, instead, a story of dreams, struggles, and realities like any other. It narrates without glorifying, and doesn’t expect idolization from its audience.
The three Armed Forces are often considered the pride of India. I remember, as a young child, I was encouraged by my parents to salute army personnel on the road if we passed them in our car. They are deserving of such respect — after all, they are the ones who step into work every single day ready to lay down their lives for our country.
However, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl does the meaningful work of reminding us that all things considered, armed personnel are also people like me and you. Their workplaces are imperfect, their institutions are biased. We deal with the same problems in civilian society, highlighted in movements like the #MeToo campaign. Therefore, while we might place them on a pedestal, the Armed Forces should not be exempt from implementing necessary change and creating a culture of accountability.
No matter how sensitive, the conversation on women’s rights in the Forces should not just be relegated to a movie review.

गुंजन सक्सेना Hindi Me Review By krishna
One of the most debated and talked about films for all the reasons except the content of the movie and the story it was going to tell was the biopic based on indian air force officer gunjan saxena the first woman in the indian air force to go to war i despite the noise surrounding the film wanted to genuinely explore the quality and execution of the storyline the film gunjan saxena the kargil girl is directed by sharon sharma and chronicles the life of the braveheart from 1984 to 1999 from a dreamy eyed little girl that dreams to touch the skies to the moment where she created history and made india proud in the kargil war in 1999. here's me telling you the good and bad aspects of the film so that you guys can ultimately decide whether this film is worth your time on netflix on 12th of august or not the underwhelming aspects dialogue delivery janu kapoor was definitely provided the short end of the stick pertaining to the trailer of the film there are too many beautiful moments expressed by january in this one rn 52 minute film but i have to confess that when the actor has to do the heavy lifting of scenes pertaining to deep emotion and grief it is in the delivery of dialogues that she falters it is both a combination of a high pitch as well as the tone of voice where in some moments the speech suffers from monotony in others it falters because of the enunciation of all letters of the hindi language lending it a very formal end product rather than coming across as a natural reaction from a character janvi has these big expressive eyes and to denounce her as expressionless is absolutely unfair because there are several moments between the dialogues especially where she shines precisely through her expressions it is in the heavy hard-hitting scenes though where she needs to improve and being just three firms old i'm sure she will the good the performances the cast of the film is stellar in every way the supporting actors who portray the indian air force officers both manavedge and vineeth are saying are spectacular the film represents them as no-nonsense regimental officers who expect no room for excuses they are restricted in their ways especially due to the new entry of a female officer but represent the discipline required for a serving officer and at a human level also represent individuals that are receptive to change if people prove it through their actions where it is the moment shared between janvi and vinith that represent this constant struggle and frustration of a disciplined officer to prove her senior that she is just as capable as other officers it is with manav where she gets a glimmer of hope and an avenue to lead by example both manav and vineeth portray the body language and etiquette of officers with utmost conviction angadmedhi is a restrictive army officer sibling and aisha raza mishra as the constantly anxious and close-minded mother fit perfectly in the film it is however the daughter and father relationship that stands out as the heartbeat of this film jaanvi especially in the moments of

★ EXCLUSIVE: Salman Khan's next is a biopic on a BSF jawaan; read details inside!
Salman Khan has donned the army uniform in several films in the past and he's currently liked a script which has a nationalist sentiment running through it. Find out more...
May 27, 2019
Salman Khan is definitely in an interesting phase in his career. While many might claim that he sticks to the usual song and dance routine, the superstar has changed course when it comes to his choices in films. For every Dabangg, there's a Bajrangi Bhaijaan and a Bharat. Now, right after Dabangg 3, he has Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Inshallah lined up.
But we hear that he has liked another project and is keen on doing it. A source, close to the actor, reveals, "Salman has always been extremely driven by stories that centre around India. Recently, a big banner approached him for a biopic they wish to produce. It will revolve around the life of a BSF jawaan and will be set in Kashmir."
Salman has donned the army uniform quite a few times on screen, whether it's in Heroes or Kabir Khan's Tubelight. But this story is different. Our informer adds, "It's an extremely brave and inspirational story of this one man - an Indian soldier - who single handedly ended the entire camp of Mujahideen militants around 12-14 years ago. Salman loved the entire idea and felt it was an untold real life story that needed to be told. He has given a verbal nod to the film already but his dates need to be figured out." Interestingly, after this BSF jawaan fought valiantly against all the terrorists in the early 2000s, there wasn't any threat to India from the Mujahideen, till the recent Pulwama attack. "That's why the story is even more relevant today. People would want to know the back story and what happened, years before the Pulwama attacks happened." The film can only go on floors sometime around mid next year, after SLB's project that also stars Alia Bhatt.
