A Gift from Someone who Wishes to Cry but Hardly Ever Does (a note (2/2) for invigilators at the Living House @ Van Gogh House London 2023)

-Soap shapes: Travelling has been an important element for my work. I started with a few shapes and added more as I travel and encounter new things. As the soaps are used to wash hands, their shapes change. So the shapes are only ephemeral.

Fish swim bladder: Fish have swim bladders inside their body so that they can control themselves to float and sink in water. Swim bladders can be swim floats when a stem of straw can be. People grab swim-bladder-shaped soap in their hands, washing their hands instead of drowning and catching a straw. After a while, the soap disappears, like the air in swim bladders disappears, but is anything left behind?

Cigarette filter: Smoking is not recommended from a medical point of view, but still people do that and that’s fine. The filters support people to smoke, by preventing them from inhaling harmful smokes too much. So cigarette filters have contradictory nature, and I like that. The tiny filters can also float in water, although they are as useless as straws when you are drowning. 

Soap berry: I firstly found them in an Indian grocery shop in Berlin, and got excited. They are natural soap on their own, they get soapy when they are soaked in water producing saponin. Other soaps disappear completely when they are used up, but those with soap berry seeds (not included in the exhibition) leave the seeds in your hands, maybe for the next generation of soap berries. The seeds are called 無患子(mukuroji), meaning “sick-less child”.

Stethoscope earplug: I guess, frankly speaking, I wanted to be fair to other senses too. The soap work is mainly experienced through sights and touches (and slight smells). Here, by introducing earplugs, I think I wanted to listen to the silence (and maybe some sound and noise) of the work, listening is an important attitude when it comes to caring. The earplugs touch your ears when you carefully listen to something that can’t be heard easily. 

Smartphone camera: They represent one of non-human senses, and they are other things you use everyday whether or not they cause you some harm and/or joy. When you wash your hands with them, do they resolve for good or what? I sympathise with them a bit, for not being treated as living creatures, but they are actually cute like micro-creatures and parasites. 

Betel nuts: They take the taste part, also they are different versions of cigarettes/smoking, offering you pastime, relaxation and possible harm. I’ve never tried them, but getting to know exotic habits might smooth out the differences among people after a while. In a way, living entails illness inevitably and we live by growing some kind of sickness in our bodies in the long run. Accepting that, and even enjoying that might help you relax when you worry too much about your health.

Tea seed: At my solo show at GAO gallery, 2018, I brewed various teas to add the extract to the soaps. The waiting room’s walls were painted with tea, and tea drawings and tea plants were part of the elements of the show. I added tea seeds to the soap variations. As I’d never seen tea seeds before the exhibition, so I perhaps wanted to talk about them, how to germinate them etc., although they are useless as seeds when they are mere soaps.

Sea cucumber: I visited dried food markets in Shanghai. I was initially searching for other kinds of swim-bladders, but I found sea cucumbers instead, which are also my favourite food and are cute creatures in the sea. When they are alive they are a bit slimy on the surface, and when they are soap and used to wash hands they also get slimy and get smoother as it goes. Dried sea cucumbers were so valuable that they were once used as a replacement for money, I heard. 

Water chestnut: I found them in Shanghai too, they grow floating in fresh water in Eurasia. The intriguing shape of the nut resembles many things, like bulls heads, flying bats and Indian samosas. By that time of the show in Shanghai, I was like, well, I shouldn’t be too picky with too strict criteria for choosing soap shapes, they are anyway temporary shapes, somehow they emerge in front of you and wash hands and disappear, how they look can vary, as far as they are soap and offer you some calm time and space to wonder about ourselves and surrounding realities. Anyway they are cute and have strange shapes. 

Found stones: I liked the way a Lao guy once told me how he spends his pastime; “...well.., eat, sleep, eat, sleep, and maybe throw stones...” Stones are everywhere, no one has never seen a stone, I believe. But how many of us spend our spare time throwing stones? Luxury. The stones and a piece of broken pot are found in my terrace garden, they are probably to be put in the bottom of plant pots, or if they are lucky some of them are kept for throwing. I would also like to see how they get smoother when they are used as soap, that might give you a sense of time passing a little faster while stones are also getting smoother at a much slower pace.

-Soap Ingredients: As for the ingredients, I started with hay which is used to clean garden ponds preventing algae from flourishing and spreading. I extracted hay essence and added it to soaps I made in Pittenweem. I guess I wanted to somehow commit to the environment, not only washing human hands. I was also interested in the old saying mentioned above. I then brewed various teas to sample extracts. Teas, for me, are great pastimes and offerings, they cure and relax you, with numerous variations. Now I take care of some kinds of plants in my terrace garden, which are traditionally used for medicinal purposes, such as Saffron, Safflower, Indigo plant, Lemongrass, and other herbs. I brewed them and other spices and herbs I usually consume in the kitchen. The latest work is made from my daily life in the garden and kitchen.

So much yummy food at home + in Berlin

Since I'm traveling on the weekends, I've been starting the week by catching up on all my homework and miscellaneous errands. My Tuesdays are half days, so I'll typically head to the library and grind out my assignments. Last week, I also decided to get groceries because I've been spending wayyy too much money on my trips and eating out...

There's all different types of grocery stores in Prague, ranging from supermarkets to little corner stores. My favorites have been Tesco and Albert primarily because of their location and selection (+ both have rewards cards). Shopping was really overwhelming at first; most of the products don't have English on them and packaged goods look a bit different as well. But the camera feature on Google Translate has definitely come in handy! I probably took like 50 pictures to translate when I was there. The first time I went shopping I was looking for sweet potatoes (sladká brambora) and fully though I had bought a normal potato (brambor) lol. Oooh also as a little tip, the baked goods section is super cheap and makes a great snack or meal (Lidl definitely has the upper hand to both Tesco and Albert and it's close to where we have classes).

Over the weekend, a group of us headed to Berlin. I've never been to Germany before and wasn't really sure what to expect. All I knew was Berlin has wild nightlife and a ton of history due to World War II. I'd have to say both were true :)

We took a free walking tour on Saturday of some of Berlin's top attractions. It was fascinating to learn more in depth about locations like the Holocaust Memorial, Reichstag, and Berlin Wall (pictured below). For example, the preliminary fence that would later become the wall was basically built overnight. The government forced young men to construct it and by the time they realized what they were doing, it was too late. I'll definitely be doing more of these tours in other cities I visit, and if you ever go on one make sure you remember to tip! (about 10 euros, for reference)

The rest of the weekend was more exploration of the West and East sides. We managed to hop on every form of transportation (S-bahn, U-bahn, tram, bus), yet we still walked so much that my feet ACHED every day. The weather made it that much harder haha; it was cloudy, snowy, and freezing cold most of the time. I still had such a good time though!! The people made the experience for sure <3

Out and about, day vs night (ft the Berlin TV Tower)

Also, cannot rave enough about the food. Currywurst, brautwurst, döner kebap, and pork knuckles are a few of the iconic Berlin foods were had. Kebap is DELICIOUS, and we had it twice. All you could hear on our bus back was us munching on our kebap hehe. There was also so many other cuisines! We tried Indian, Taiwanese, and Japanese, and they were equally as delicious 😋

It's actually so nice to be back in Prague and kinda crazy that hearing Czech again came with a comforting feeling. I get to see some friends from home next weekend, so look forward to what I'm up to in London with them!

This is such a good question, and the only reason I’ve taken so long to answer it is because tumblr has deleted my original response, and I got annoyed. (It doesn’t keep this from being an excellent question.)

Illinois I am always going to love the sky. I don’t....really have to miss it, I bring it with me, wherever I go.

Michigan Somewhere, carved deep inside me, is Sleeping Bear Dunes. You have to understand, we lived in Michigan when I was at my most unbearable---unbearable for me and everyone I lived with. I was so, so angry and didn’t understand why (I’m still not sure I understand why) and the only solace I had was:

(1) lying in the cold grass of the hill in our backyard, staring up at the brilliant-cold starlight and thinking that yes, I was like that sky, because there was a hidden vastness inside me too; and

(2) standing at the top of the dunes at Sleeping Bear, watching the small, black figures of my family run towards the water as the wind played with the folds of my clothing. How briefly, I felt like I was free.

I don’t want that feeling back again. But I miss the hill, and I miss the dunes, and I miss how bright the stars were in Michigan.

Kentucky Of all the places I have lived, Kentucky is the most magical. I’m not sure if it’s the green hills---still a revelation after Illinois’ overabundance of sky---or how much of it feels steeped in small town, or just how slowly it moves into the modern day. (Mark Twain allegedly said that when the world ended, he wanted to be in either Cincinnati or Kentucky---accounts differ---because they would be at least 10 years behind the times.) It feels like a gift, to have known it, to have seen it and respected it. I can talk a good game about NKY’s foibles and shortcomings (Skyline Chili is an abomination) but I learned respect for the kind of fervid, insular love born of those communities. How it can be a blessing and monstrosity.

I miss the long drives to visit my sister, or winding through rural communities where people wave as you go by. As a border state, it’s a liminal place---and I always liked that feeling.

Chicago I moved to Chicago for college. During frosh week, we went to an Indian restaurant, and I talked about AI and the ethics of robotics with the boy I’d have a monstrous crush on for the next 3 years. (This probably contributed to the monstrous crush.) 

I didn’t know it, but I was already in love.

Not with the boy, of course, but with that feeling. After a lifetime of suburbs and rural towns, Chicago was a goddamn revelation. When Judy Garland went over the rainbow---that was what it felt like. The world was abruptly oversaturated technicolor, and I couldn’t get enough of it. I had classmates who weren’t white, and classmates who weren’t cis, and classmates who were white and cis and annoyingly wrong, there were boys I liked and boys I didn’t, and new kinds of foods to eat (Ethiopian, Thai, sushi that didn’t come from a grocery store). It turned out I liked opera! I was dragged to Berlin one evening and got very very drunk on something electric blue that might have been Monster with vodka, and it was lethal, but I had such a good time watching a friend perform in drag to Lady Gaga.

Chicago was the first place that really opened to me, that I opened to. There was---is---always more to it. I don’t think I can ever fully recover that initial feeling of surprised joy, but that. That is what Chicago taught me I wish I could drag to present day.

Boston I was only in Boston for a summer, but I count it, because in Boston I learned to be unafraid of doing things alone. I was technically there with a bunch of other interns, but---well, they apparently weren’t into walking the Freedom Trail, or going to Braintree (yes, to see the Adams National Park) or seeing whales, or watching the dragon boat festival. So I did those things by myself: rented bikes, reserved one (1) ticket, and talked to helpful/bored tour guides in period costume, letting myself enjoy the experience without self-consciousness.

Of everything I saw and did in Boston, I think the whales really had the biggest impact on me. It was the first (the only) time where I understood how young humanity’s dominion is, how very new Homo sapiens is to the stage. When a humpback whale breaches not even 40 yards in front of you, it’s like catching a glimpse into a much older and stranger world, where you are a small, skittering frightened thing whose warm blood can run very, very cold.

Humpback whales would never survive in Lake Michigan, but if it were somehow biologically possible, that would be really cool.

Philadelphia I loved Philly. It was hot and my job was terrible, but the city itself...the city was a gift. Just now, sitting in my apartment in Chicago, I caught the whiff of someone grilling (it’s the kind of beautiful summer evening that’s perfect for grilling) and I was suddenly back there. Philly was always full of smells like that, human smells---restaurants and sweat, trash on hot mornings and rain on the concrete in the evenings. I miss that sense of being crowded together with the mass of humanity. Chicago is bigger and more populous, but it’s not so close. Chicago doesn’t press you up against your neighbor the way Philly does; it’s harder to detach, when you can smell the burgers and shawarma on South Street or there’s someone in a welder’s mask outside your window. So if there was anything I could uproot and pull the seven hundred-some miles from there to here, it would be that. That inescapable contact.

Hotline Miami is one of those games where there’s little-to-no story, the controls are fairly basic, and the graphics aren’t realistic – but it manages to be more fun that perhaps most games that feature even just one of those mechanics.

Hotline Miami is a very violent game. Not violent as in ‘a bit of blood here and there’, violent as in you’ll be punching people’s heads off, shooting people, choking people, and even drilling holes in people. This game, while not realistic in many ways, is not for the faint of heart.

Hotline Miami is a top-down beat-em-up type game that progresses through a set of linear missions, which must be unlocked in order.

One day, the unnamed playable character wakes up in a basement, where after a quick tutorial in how to kill people through a variety of methods, the character walks upstairs to a room with three masked men who promptly launch into a cryptic set of messages, before the actual game begins. Each mission plays out with the character receiving a phone call, driving to a location, and killing a whole bunch of henchmen. Each level takes place in a building with many floors, so the character will make their way up each floor until they eventually kill every man in the building. After the character accomplishes this, they walk all the way through the floors of the building, past all the piles of bodies of the men he’s killed, reaches the entrance, hops in his car, and then goes an completes a mundane task, like buying groceries, renting a movie, or going to the local disco to get his groove on – this is (presumably) the 80s after all. These tasks help reiterate how strange the whole set of events is, and even allows some sort of story progression (which is very minimal and I never really followed what was happening – or even why it was happening).

Gameplay is very simple – there is one ‘action’ button that will make you use whatever you’re holding: fists will punch, baseball bats will swing, and guns will fire, all with the press of this one button – it’s very easy to use, especially since the only other controls are moving and controlling the cursor. Whenever you kill or knock out an enemy, they drop their weapon. This is useful for many reasons, namely because the character can only carry one weapon at a time – so if you run out of ammo and need a melee weapon, or you have a melee weapon and want a gun, you’ll need to find whatever enemy has the weapon you’re after. Additionally, the AI in this game will react in many ways to different weapons: if they hear gunshots, they’ll come running. If they see you through a window holding a knife, they’ll shoot you/run at you. This can be used to an advantage to quickly exterminate all the enemies on a floor – a tactic of mine was a gunshot followed by picking up the knife and holding down the ‘action’ button to melee very fast, and then moving close to the door and killing all the enemies very quickly.

It’s little additions like these that make the game that much more stylised and interesting to play through. The other addition that makes the game unique on every playthrough (I played the campaign twice) is the feature of one hit kills for not just you, but your enemies as well (save for the few bosses). Once you die, you start from the start of the floor you were killed on – so sometimes I’d get through almost the entire floor of enemies and then die at the hands of the last one. There are little moments like these in Hotline Miami that just make the game that much more intense, and if you survive, rewarding.

The game also has several collectables; which are masks and puzzle pieces. Masks are masks that your character wears to do their job, all of which save for the starting mask add a perk to the game – one allows you to start with a knife, one gives you another life (but only if you get hit by a gunshot) and another allows for even more gore. There’s a mix of cosmetic masks (like the gore one) and gameplay ones (such as the knife one), which is good. Most masks are unlocked simply through progressing the story, but there are others that must be specifically found in a particular level. The other collectable, puzzle pieces, are found throughout all the levels, and are represented by a small purple square. Collecting these will give a letter, which is used to spell out a sentence. This is used in one of Hotline Miami’s two endings: either the standard one with little info (but still finishing the story) or the ‘complete’ ending, which gives a lot more information (but still doesn’t really make the story any clearer).

I only really have two gripes with this game, and funnily enough they’re almost contradictory: one regards how easy the game is, and the other how hard it is. My first issue is how overpowered some of the weapons are: the knife especially. I found that I was able to pretty much use just knife to kill everyone on a floor, and once I got the mask that let me start with a knife, that was the only mask I used. My other issue is that some parts of the game are incredibly difficult – the difficulty scaling in this game is crazy, it’ll be flowing at one point and then be incredibly difficult the next – I had to use a walkthrough to figure out how to do some parts, and at other parts I only survived thanks to a fluke. Fortunately, there’s only really three parts in the whole game that I remember as being incredibly difficult, and once you realise how to complete them they become so much easier.

Length-wise, there’s about 20 story missions here, and none of them take that long to complete – it’d be possible to finish the game in one sitting of about 3 hours I reckon, but otherwise it doesn’t take that long to complete. There is replay value in the masks and the puzzle pieces/complete ending though.

While there are a few issues regarding the difficult of the game, that doesn’t change how much pure, simple fun Hotline Miami is. It’s simple, intense, and just absolute brilliant.
