Climate change-driven heatwaves threaten millions
Tumblr media
Extreme record-breaking heat leads to severe crises across the world.
Already in 2024, from Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria in the West; to Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines in the East; large regions of Asia are experiencing temperatures well above 40°C (104°F) for days on end.
The heatwave has been particularly difficult for people living in refugee camps and informal housing, as well as for unhoused people and outdoor workers.
Using the Heat Index Calculator, at that temperature and a relative humidity of 50%, residents see a heat index of 55°C (131°F) - a temperature level humans cannot long survive:
Tumblr media
In February, the southern coastal zone of West Africa also experienced abnormal early-season heat. A combination of high temperatures and humid air resulted in average heat index values of about 50°C (122°F) - the danger level, associated with a high risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
Locally, temperatures entered the extreme danger level associated with high risk of heat stroke, with values up to 60°C (140°F):
Tumblr media
Even here at Ad Astra's HQ in Kansas, last summer we saw several days with high temperatures of 102°F (39°C) at 57% humidity, resulting in a heat index of 133°F (56°C):
Tumblr media
Of course, the major difference in survivability in Kansas versus some of the places suffering extreme heat right now is that air-conditioning abounds here. Those who live somewhere that faces extreme heat but can escape it indoors are a lot more likely to survive, but a person who lives somewhere without such life-saving gear faces not just discomfort, but heat stroke and even death.
This includes unhoused and poor people here in the wealthier parts of the world, who often do not have access to indoor refuge from the heat.
About 15% of US residents live below the poverty line. Many low-wage earners work outside in construction or landscaping, exposed to the ravages of heat. Many do not own an air conditioner, and those who do might need to budget their body's recovery from heat against cost to purchase and run cooling equipment. Because heat stress is cumulative, when they go to work the next day, they’re more likely to suffer from heat illness.
Bad as that is, for those living on the street, heatwaves are merciless killers. Around the country, heat contributes to some 1,500 deaths annually, and advocates estimate about half of those people are homeless. In general, unhoused people are 200 times more likely to die from heat-related causes than sheltered individuals.
For example, in 2022, a record 425 people died from heat in the greater Phoenix metro area. Of the 320 deaths for which the victim’s living situation is known, more than half (178) were homeless. In 2023, Texans experienced the hottest summer since 2011, with an average temperature of 85.3°F (30°C) degrees between June and the end of August. Some cities in Texas experienced more than 40 days of 100°F (38°C) or higher weather. This extreme heat led to 334 heat-related deaths, the highest number in Texas history and twice as many as in 2011.
The Pacific Northwest of Canada and the USA suffered an extreme heat event in June, 2021, during which 619 people died. Many locations broke all-time temperature records by more than 5°C, with a new record-high temperature of 49.6°C (121°F). This is a region ill-suited to such weather, and despite having relatively high wealth compared to much of the world, many homes and businesses there do not have air-conditioning due to a history of much lower temperatures.
Heatwaves are arguably the deadliest type of extreme weather event because of their wide impact. While heatwave death tolls are often underreported, hundreds of deaths from the February heatwave were reported in the affected countries, including Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Philippines.
Extreme heat also has a powerful impact on agriculture, causing crop damage and reduced yields. It also impacts education, with holidays having to be extended and schools closing, affecting millions of students - in Delhi, India, schools shut early this week for summer when temperatures soared to 47°C (117°F) at dangerous humidity levels:
Tumblr media
At 70°C (157°F !), humans simply cannot function and face imminent death, especially when humidity is high. This is the notion of "heat index," a derivative of "wet-bulb temperature."
Though now mostly calculated using heat and humidity readings, wet-bulb temperature was originally measured by putting a wet cloth over a thermometer and exposing it to the air.
This allowed it to measure how quickly the water evaporated off the cloth, representing sweat evaporating off skin.
The theorized human survival limit has long been 35°C (95°F) wet-bulb temperature, based on 35°C dry heat at 100% humidity - or 46°C (115°F) at 50% humidity. To test this limit, researchers at Pennsylvania State University measured the core temperatures of young, healthy people inside a heat chamber.
They found that participants reached their "critical environmental limit" - when their body could not stop the core temperature from continuing to rise – at 30.6°C wet bulb temperature, well below what was previously theorized. That web-bulb temperature parallels a 47°C (117°F) heat index.
The team estimates that it takes between 5-7 hours before such conditions reach "really, really dangerous core temperatures."
youtube
On March 5, 2024, Hong Kong saw temperatures of 27°C (80°F) with 100% humidity, which results in a heat index of 32.2°C (90°F) - seemingly not so bad until considering it's higher than the critical wet-bulb temperature. Also, if you watch the video, imagine the long-term effects of water accumulating in residences, such as dangerous mold.
We are witnessing the effects of climate change right now, all around the world, and rising temperatures are just the most-obvious (what we used to call "global warming"). Many, many other side-effects of climate change are beginning to plague us or headed our way soon, and will affect us all.
Unfortunately, those most affected - and those being hit the hardest right now - are people most vulnerable to heatwaves. With climate crises increasing in both intensity and frequency, and poverty at dangerous levels, we face a rapidly rising, worldwide crisis.
We must recognize the climate crisis as an international emergency and treat it as such. So much time, creative energy, resources, and life is wasted in war and the pursuit of profit or power - consider how much good could come from re-allocating those resources to ensuring a future for Earthlings, instead.
(Expect to see a "Science into Fiction" workshop on climate change coming soon - SF writers have a particular responsibility to address such important topics of change and global consequence.)

Remembering #JuthikaRoy on her 10th death anniversary (05/02/14), the iconic bhajan vocalist celebrated as the modern-day #Meera during the pre-independence era. Renowned for her soul-stirring Meerabai bhajans such as "Ghunghat ke pat khol" and "Pag Ghunghru Baandh Meera Naachi Re," Juthika Roy carved a niche for herself in the hearts of many.
Her melodious renditions won the hearts of Hindi and Bengali cinema audiences alike, making her a celebrated figure in her time. Her voice captivated notable personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, who were avid admirers of her work.
On the historic day of August 15, 1947, as Nehru journeyed from Teen Murti Bhavan to the Red Fort to mark India's independence, Roy's bhajans filled the air, broadcast live by All India Radio. After her performance, at Nehru's request, she continued to sing until the national flag was hoisted, adding a memorable soundtrack to a pivotal moment in India's history.
In her reflections, Roy shared an anecdote about Sarojini Naidu revealing how Gandhi found solace in her bhajans during his incarceration in Pune, making her music an integral part of his daily prayer meetings. She even had the honor of performing privately for Gandhi at his residence.
Embarking on her musical journey at just 12 years old with her first album, Roy was mentored by the renowned rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Her collaborations with the esteemed Bengali music director Kamal Dasgupta, especially the revered Narayan stuti "Narayan Shriman Narayan," continue to resonate with listeners.
Roy's versatile talent extended beyond Hindi and Bengali, as she lent her voice to songs in various languages, including Urdu and Tamil.
On February 5, 2014, the music world lost this luminary in Kolkata after a long illness. As we commemorate her legacy, we hope for her soul to find everlasting peace.

1500 BCE - 500 BCE: Vedic Period
The Vedic period is named after the Vedas, a collection of hymns and religious texts that were composed during this time. It is also known as the early Hindu period and is characterized by the development of Hinduism, the caste system, and the emergence of the Mahajanapadas.
322 BCE - 185 BCE: Mauryan Empire
The Mauryan Empire was the first dynasty to unify most of India under a single ruler, Chandragupta Maurya. Under the rule of the Mauryan dynasty, India saw significant economic, cultural, and religious growth.
320 CE - 550 CE: Gupta Empire
The Gupta Empire was a golden age of Indian civilization. It is known for its advancements in science, mathematics, art, and literature. During this period, the decimal system, the concept of zero, and the Hindu-Arabic numeral system were developed.
711 CE - 1206 CE: Islamic InvasionsIslamic invasions began in the early 8th century, when Arab armies conquered the Sindh region in present-day Pakistan. Over the next few centuries, Muslim rulers established several dynasties in India, including the Delhi Sultanate.

During this time, India underwent significant economic, social, and political changes, including the establishment of railways, telegraphs, and a modern legal system. The Indian independence movement gained momentum during this period, eventually leading to India's independence in 1947.
1947 CE - present: Independent India
India gained independence from Britishrule on August 15, 1947, and became a democratic republic on January 26, 1950. Jawaharlal Nehru became India's first Prime Minister and led the country through a period of modernization and economic growth. India faced several challenges, including partition, communal violence, and poverty. The country also adopted a non-aligned foreign policy and played a prominent role in the Non-Aligned Movement. India also conducted several nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998, which brought the country into the global spotlight.
In recent years, India has emerged as a major economic power, with a rapidly growing economy and a burgeoning tech sector. The country has also faced several challenges, including political and social unrest, environmental degradation, and growing inequality. India's relations with its neighbors, particularly Pakistan and China, have been a source of tension, and the country has also faced security threats from terrorism and insurgency. The country is also grappling with issues of caste discrimination, gender inequality, and religious intolerance.

Lockheed Martin announces European F-16 Training Center in Romania 🇷🇴
Center will have the participation of the Dutch.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 08/31/2023 - 18:31 in Military, War Zones
Lockheed Martin and the governments of Romania and the Netherlands have announced a Letter of Intentions to establish the European F-16 Fighter Training Center in Romania.
For the center, the Dutch Ministry of Defense should lend F-16 fighters to help in the training of Ukrainian pilots in Romania.
Putting the pen on paper in Madrid, on August 30, the Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, Kajsa Ollongren, along with her Romanian counterpart, Angel Tîlv? r, and Filippo Marchetti, from Lockheed Martin, signed this decision.
Tumblr media
“The F-16 continues to play a crucial role in 21st century security missions to the United States, Europe, NATO and allies around the world,” said OJ Sanchez, vice president and general manager of the Integrated Fighter Group. "LockedLock Martin is proud to partner with the Netherlands and Romania in this European F-16 Training Center in Romania, which will increase mission readiness through a comprehensive F-16 training solution for Romanian pilots."
The center will focus on ensuring the effectiveness and safety of Romanians flying and operating F-16 fighters and may eventually expand to include training for other nations.
“As soon as the details are finalized, we are confident that the training center will benefit Romania and other regional F-16 operators, potentially including Ukraine,” Sanchez added.
Tumblr media
F-16 training for Ukrainian pilots will be held in Denmark and Romania, with the expectation that the initial group of Ukrainian F-16 pilots will complete their training in early 2024.
The United States gave the green light to the plan, fully in accordance with the supply of the F-16s, granting authorization to transfer third parties to the Romanian training center.
Tumblr media
With the Dutch flight training of the F-16 previously taking place in the United States, the current capacity restrictions and the transition to the F-35 led to the interruption of this training last summer. Now, as the Netherlands prepares for the complete transition to the F-35 by 2024, Lockheed Martin will be in charge of operating and maintaining the aircraft in conjunction with Romania, all in line with Dutch military aviation standards and European regulations, while providing the necessary training.

Travel Sketches (Nov 2023 - March 2024)
Nov 2023.
Bishnumaya just turned 100 this October. She comes from Pokhari, about 15 kilometers from Mirik town. As we spoke, she recalled old memories, her expressions shifting as if reliving those moments. She seemed elsewhere, gazing past me into the distance, and then, as if continuing a conversation with herself, she said, “Nowadays people ask about caste when they meet someone, and how is that of any use?”
She described how, when she was small, there were no proper schools in her village. She learned to read and write, however little, by arranging corn kernels on the ground to form shapes that resembled letters and numbers. Reflecting on her long life, she added that everyone around her—friends her age and younger siblings—is dead, and she feels like a monster who swallowed them all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sun is out, but it’s only warm where the light falls. The history of Mirik is reflected in its lake, which used to be a marshland. According to Wikipedia, the name Mirik comes from the Lepcha words Mir-Yok, meaning "place burnt by fire." It's very green now for a place that was once burnt.
A town fair is underway, offering a range of attractions: a Ferris wheel, flower park visits, fast food stalls, ice cream carts, horse and boat rides, live pop music, card game betting, balloon shooting, local bingo-type card games, and hoopla with prizes up for grabs. Some prizes are cash with notes of 20, 50, and 100 rupees.

For the past ten years, I haven't had a permanent home. When I wanted to sidestep the weight of planning and longed for comfort and familiarity, I returned to places I liked a little more than others: Auroville, Dharamshala, Shillong, Aizawl, Nagaland.
I like meeting new people and have formed what feels like extended families in some of these places. Since I have mostly felt free to move around, sometimes nostalgia of people or a time or a curiosity to see how things may have changed would draw me back to a place.
Earlier in August, while I was temporarily living in Auroville, I got a call about a six-month project called The Great Himalayan Exploration, a collaboration between UNESCO and Royal Enfield. The project aims to document the intangible cultural heritage of local communities in the Himalayan region of Northeast India.
My work on this trip specifically involved photographing the people behind various cultural practices and examining the ecosystems they exist in. To build context, I engaged in various methods, such as scanning old photos from people’s personal albums, taking photos of their living spaces, landscapes, and exploring archival resources. From November to April, we were in West Bengal, Sikkim, Tripura, Mizoram, Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.

On our way back to Siliguri from Mirik, we made a lengthy stop near a tea estate. Lalita, from Tingling village, shared that she had spent two decades working on the estate, much like many other women from the village. Their collective hope was to earn a minimum of 500 rupees per day for their labor. Currently, they are receiving 250 rupees per day for an eight-hour shift.

Sanchamaya, 74, sits with her friend Bodhimaya in the front yard of her house in Darap, both lifelong farmers of the area and belonging to the Limbu community. They're nice and welcoming. It's our second day in Pelling, West Sikkim, and I've ended up at the wrong house. Today, we're supposed to see a drum dance(chyabrung) performance by local Limbu boys, which I'll catch later.
They talk in basic broken Hindi, with Shusan translating most of it. Sanchamaya leads me to the back of their house, where she proudly shows me trays of dried large cardamoms. Later, we'll visit her cardamom field. They also cultivate Mosambi, oranges, guavas, maize, peas, ginger, and onions. Sanchamaya spends her days with her friend, grandchildren, working in the fields, and cooking in the kitchen.

I visited Chuba village, 3 hours away from Gangtok, with Semeon from Haflong, Assam, a textile design graduate from NID and working at Sonam’s design studio called EchoStream based in Gangtok. Semeon was familiar with the village and the community I was there to meet. Arun Gurung and his wife, founders of Chubako, are endeavoring to revive an old tradition of sourcing wool from indigenous banpala sheep to make clothes. They operate a small cooperative called Chubako. In this village of 43 families, one person from each household now works for Chubako. (photo above: Arun Gurung, founder of Chubako)
(photo below: Designed by Sanskruti Shukla, co-created with the craft community of Chubako for Echostream, Gangtok)
Local stories of the craftspeople of Chuba are showcased and incorporated into wool through interactive workshops focused on storytelling and design development. The felted art rugs depict the flora and fauna of Sikkim.

Gangamaya Gurung, 83, Arun Gurung's mother, lit up like a child when she saw Semeon. They shared a bond akin to best friends. Despite her age, Gangamaya remains active, tending to sheep, cutting grass, farming, and weaving. When asked about her leisure activties, she said, "eat, watch TV - eat, watch TV."

Jan, 2024.
We have been out on this trip for 3 months. My thoughts scattered in a kind of bardo between the world I know and the world I am coming into contact with. I picture house fronts with flowers in Darjeeling, roads winding, the long cold rivers snaking toward mountains that seem no bigger than my thumb, the snow capped peaks shifting colours, the prayer flags in high altitudes and on house doors. Gangtok’s Lal Bazaar skateboarders flash by, a school in Tripura where a student lives on 700rs a month, nini bung tamo and 4 other sentences I learned in Kokborok nag me like a tune. Sidangcherra to Pecharthal to Panisagar to Damchara checkpoint we make our way from Tripura into Mizoram by road. I think about where I will be later in the summer and see a white fluffed cloud taking the shape of a growing tree far on the horizon.

Krismas Ruaitheh(Christmas feast) at Khatla Presbyterian Church, Aizawl. This is my 3rd time in Aizawl. I used to go for dinners, sometime evening tea to my friend’s family house further up the road from the Khatla church. We are here to document the traditional community feast of the Mizos.
Tumblr media
Priscilla is currently pursuing her BA in Political Science in Delhi, and she's home for the holidays. She was volunteering at Khatla Presbyterian Church where she and her friends were tasked with serving lemonade, a customary drink after the meal. For Priscilla, the most remarkable aspect of the feast is its longstanding tradition — dating back to pre-Christian times — where the entire community comes together to share its moments of joy and sorrow + they still use Changel Hnah (plantain leaves) — the traditional way to serve meals.

On an idle walk one evening in Khatla, I find myself in a local thrift store and get invited to meet James Lalhmingliana. He is 80, one of the founding members of Aizawl's first bike club, Aizawl Thunders. He went to school at Sts. Edmund’s in Shillong.
In 1966, he joined the Mizo National Front uprising, fighting for freedom. He went underground for seven years, first in Arakan, Burma, then in 1969 to East Pakistan for shelter. "It was useless," he says. "We wasted our good years. When I came back, I was put in jail, but not for long."
He has been housebound for years due to his health.

At 8 am on a cold January morning, we arrive at Joonbeel Mela. (Joon and beel are Assamese terms for moon and wetland. The Tiwa community first organized this in the 15th century to exchange goods between indigenous tribal communities in Assam and the surrounding areas.)
It is known as the only fair in India where people still practice barter, exchanging goods like fish, sweet potatoes, yam, homegrown vegetables, turmeric, chili, kali miri, and rongalau.
Over a few hours, I have brief interactions with people from Jagiroad, Pamlatar, Deosal, Sira, Changsari, Potia Pathar, Bengenabari, Palahguri, ulukunchi, morigaon, Nagaon, Saru Amli, Belguri, Damal, and places as far as Langpih, mawlynnong in Meghalaya.  No one refuses a photo.
Tumblr media
This is my fifth time in Nagaland. I first came here ten years ago and stayed at Kevesho's home. He is the father of the Tetseo Sisters, a well-known folk group of four sisters from Nagaland.
Kevesho Tetseo, son of Nülhüprü Tetseo was born in 1950s in Thüvopisümi village, Phek District, Nagaland. Initially schooled in the village, he finished his HSLC at Government High School in Kohima and graduated from Kohima College in Arts. He worked in the Education Dept. for sometime and now retired. Active in cultural music, Chokri language preservation, and in church choir since his youth.
(Tati - - a single string musical instrument which is used as an accompaniment with singing of li- indigenous songs by the Chakhesang Nagas.)
Kevesho learned how to make Tati from observing elders in his village when he was young and has done Tati making work since 1990s and a good number of it has been produced till date by him including improvising it for longer life by using steel wires as strings.
He tells me, the woven shawl he is wearing in the picture is "thipiqhü". It is the most prestigious shawl (indigenous cloth) among many traditional clothes of the Chakhesang tribe. It is a shawl they wear with humility and honour.

Daisy Yaden was born in Zotlang, Mizoram. She studied at the Welsh Mission School in Mission Veng, Aizawl. She will turn 98 this June. She learned to weave shawls on a backstrap loom, stitching, and baking from her mother, often baking cakes in the fireplace. She taught in the interiors of Nagaland, in places like Noklak and Changtongya. She started her career by teaching people self-sufficiency—how to cook, make jams and pickles—skills she picked up from a British magazine called Woman’s Own. She used to compose little tunes for children at Sunday school. She loves flower gardening and her favourite film is "Gone with the Wind."

like okay last post about the situations that have been created but like why are we doing india pakistan geopolitics in my inbox anyways. when i specifically asked for not that. all this over the most benign of posts every single time, with no compassion for me at all. sorry you think im annoying however this is not my problem. also losing my mind at pakistan got its independence from india. yeah you know it's not like partition was heavily planned out by the british and the social forces that led to it were part of their divide and conquer policy. yeah no. they got independence from the state of india (established 15 august 1947) in 1947 on the 14th of august. yeah i don't know how that works either but hey that's history.

Sebastian Vettel's Unbeatable Record
Sebastian Vettel has hung up his F1 racing gloves at the end of 2022. And for a man who began his career with an-off appearance at the 2007 US grand prix ended with 53 wins in 290 starts four World Titles he is a modern f1 legend.

So how did it happen…?
It all began on the 25thof August 2013, and the drivers were heading in to Round 11. It was the first race after the summer break at Spa and Sebastian Vettel was already leading the championship. At the time he already had 4 wins out of 10 races and a 38-point lead over Kimi Raikkonen in the drivers’ standings. As for the race Vettel made a clean getaway at the beginning but overtook Lewis Hamilton on the straight to gain 1stplace, finishing there at the end of the race.
Next up, was Monza, and Vettel started the race on pole, followed closely by his teammate Mark Webber and Felipe Massa, however, he held them off with ease and gained his second win in a row.
Tumblr media
We headed now to Korea, and although Vettel had Lewis Hamilton close behind, he was able to secure another comfortable victory despite the craziness going on behind him. He secured his 4thconsecutive win.
Now it was Round 15, just one week later and it was the Japanese Grand Prix. Vettel did not take pole in qualifying, which had him fall to P3 at the start. However, this didn’t stop Vettel and he ended up winning the race adding his 5thwin to his now growing record.
India 2013, came next, and I mentioned this earlier in my must watch races posts. Vettel started the race on brand new softs and therefore had to pit early, which resulted in him coming out of the pits in P17 but quickly made his way up to P2. He subsequently won the race and not only did Vettel secure his 6thconsecutive win but his 4thconsecutive world championship.
Round 17 took F1 to Abu Dhabi, and even though he had won the championship, Vettel did not give up on wanting those race wins. He took absolutely no prisoners this race and finished 30 seconds above his teammate Mark Webber in P2. He now had his 7thconsecutive win.
Getting closer to the win record, Formula 1 raced in the United States for Round 18. Vettel started the race from pole, and well, the rest was history. He had an easy win and secured his 8thwin in a row, this race broke Ascari and Schumacher’s previous record of 7 consecutive wins.
Tumblr media
True F1 brilliance came for Sebastian Vettel that season and is one of the reasons I am such a huge fan. It’s sad to see him retire but his memory will live on through all the amazing records he made and the statistics he has.
Let me know, what is your favourite Sebastian Vettel Moment?

Comper CLA.7 Swift 'G-ACTF' by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: c/n S.32/9. Built 1932 Owned and operated by the Shuttleworth Collection and seen on the flightline during the collection’s 2022 Season Premiere Air Show. Old Warden, Bedfordshire, UK. 1st May 2022 The following history for G-ACTF came from the Shuttleworth Collection Website a few years ago. Sadly, the current website does not include such fascinating information: - “The Comper CLA.7 Swift was designed by Flt Lt Nicholas Comper in 1929. It was a small monoplane of wooden construction with plywood and fabric covering. The folding wing was mounted on top of the fuselage to give the pilot a good downward view. The prototype Swift was powered by a 35hp ABC Scorpion engine, but the first seven production aircraft were modified to be fitted with the 50hp British Salmson AD9 radial engine. To improve the aircraft's performance for air racing, Comper then fitted Pobjoy radial engines as standard, although three Swifts were fitted with de Havilland Gipsy engines. Richard Shuttleworth was a director of Comper Aircraft and owned two Comper Swifts. 41 Comper Swifts were produced and today there are six complete Comper Swifts in existence, some replica Swifts have been built. The Collection’s Comper Swift was the ninth Swift to be built in 1932 and a 15 minute test flight was made on August 24 1932 by Nick Comper. It was originally registered to Alban Ali as VT-ADO 'The Scarlet Angel' and spent the first part of its life in India. It was a competitor in the 1933 Viceroy's Challenge Cup Air Race in Delhi. Also competing in this race was Richard Shuttleworth and his flying instructor George Stead, racing in two more Comper Swifts. Alban Ali came sixth with the second fastest time at 124mph. Richard Shuttleworth retired from the race. After the race Ali left Delhi to fly the Swift back to England escorted by George Stead. During this flight Ali had to make a forced landing near Gaza and VT-ADU was badly damaged. After repairs Ali continued his flight, but the engine was not working properly and Ali crated VT-ADO and shipped it to Heston. 'The Scarlet Angel' was then sold to George Errington who rebuilt it and re-registered the aircraft as G-ACTF on May 24 1934, with the aircraft then flying soon after. Errington then flew the Swift all over the country and abroad and listed all of the places that the aircraft had visited on the rudder. The aircraft was sold in 1937 to Francis K. Luxmore who kept the Swift at Portsmouth where it remained during the war. In 1948 it was bought by test pilot Ron Clear. Clear groomed the aircraft for air racing and cleaned up the airframe, in the 1950 Daily Express race, the now silver G-ACTF finished in fifth place with an average speed of 141mph. G-ACTF was sold in 1951 and went through several owners until being sold to BOAC pilot Alan Chalkley who flew it extensively. In 1990 it was put into storage until being purchased by the Collection on August 16 1996. It had not flown for six years, but made its first display appearance in 1997. Over the years G-ACTF had been extensively modified with an enlarged cockpit, wheel spats, brakes and other parts. During 1998 it was overhauled and restored to its original factory condition and paint scheme.”
