Gotta confess something about Veilguard.

I think I can firmly, unambiguously say, with my whole chest, from the bottom of my heart, the writing in Veilguard is great. Not okay, not suitable, not “fine for what it is.”

Great. Fantastic. Beautiful. Amazing Dragon Age game.

I’ve heard it’s everything from hollow to bad to “oh yeah sure the plot is okay but everything else is weak” or “the companions were better in x.” No.

The fact that every part of the story and the companions ties into the major themes of healing and regret, and what leadership really means, makes it the most cohesive of about any BioWare game I can think of. Full stop. The choices actually matter to the story you’re playing. I’m so happy they shed some of the dead weight of old choices and focused on the story they were telling. Rook is a phenomenal protagonist pitted against the Evanuris. The companions are as fleshed out as they’ve ever been while each has an important role in the story for the first time. It’s tightly written while giving a lot of room for the emotions to breathe. It’s lore accurate and gave us so much to chew on. Not here to say it’s perfect cause nothing ever is. I’m looking forward to the more critical meta as the dust settles. But damn if it isn’t well-done. The fact we got it at all and what EA put the team through makes it even more impressive.

You don’t have to like it, you don’t have to play it, frankly if you can’t recognize the beauty in front of you that’s a you problem, but you can’t convince me this isn’t some of the best writing the studio has ever done. There is simply too much in the meta I’ve seen and done lately(hi mutuals you’re amazing) to convince me otherwise.

So yeah. Here’s your aggressively positive Veilguard post for today. Also thanks to the people who hated it cause I might not have doubled down on the critical analysis so hard otherwise. Strongly encourage you to read the analyses we’ve all been doing it’s really fun.

Law's artist side isn't talked about enough, so here's a smooth brain ramble.

He prefers abstract arts over realism. Unlike Kid who forms animal or skull figures with metals, Law creates strange 'sculptures' with his victim's bodies/belongings:

And, of course, the tattoos.

I like how all of his tattoos accentuate the shapes of his torso and arms, especially the joints and muscles. Combined they look like a single stylized drawing of human upper torso.

Seen theories that the tribal style could be a lost trend from Flevance (as seen on the arm of a miner in his flashback), but it could just be his personal style. That said, his upper arm's heart tattoos look similar.

(Something that artists probably noticed long ago but I'm only noticing recently: Law's upper arm's tattoos have been simplified over time. There used to be two spiral-like protrusions, but Oda has been omitting them in later arts)

The "DEATH" tattoos have a straightforward message. According to the Law novel, these were his first tattoos.

Speaking of death, ghosts and spirituality have been implicitly a theme for Law, especially during Dressrosa. Doflamingo referred to Law as Cora's 'vengeful ghost'. Law's (cursed) sword Kikoku's name means 'wailings of a restless ghost". Ironically, Law having a hidden name was also a tradition that related to dead people.

The orange jolly roger (red in the sail) could be many things, I think it's a stylized way of drawing the sun.

Sun symbols are everywhere in the One Piece world. Law's lower arm tattoos are different types of 'suns'. Law might've subconsciously carried those symbols from his hometown for their aesthetic appeal.

The tattoos on the back of his hands reminded me of the church lady's cross, which is slightly different from the cross seen at Kuma's church. It's possible that various faiths in One Piece world are interconnected, leading to a prophecy about the sun god and Dawn. Law, at the very least, believes in the will of D and his own fate being tied to a purpose.

The chest tattoo, clearly a tribute to Corazon, could have some elements of catholicism. Kikoku also has crosses all over its sheath. Originally this wasn't my observation, but Law seeing Cora as a sacred being makes a lot of sense.

Carving a heart at the dead center of his chest by creating small wounds - the process itself reminds of Cora doesn't it

The custom-made Dressrosa coat is another tribute to Corazon, but IMHO he designed it specifically for Doflamingo, as a mockery.

A cross and circle like dangling a pistol target for Doflamingo's shooting practice, with a grinning face copied from Doflamingo's own jolly roger, but it's Corazon. Like his brother has returned to face his pistol again. A vengeful ghost indeed

And boy did it work...

Doflamingo shot it until the mark was completely drenched and unrecognizable.

Assuming he draws for all of his clothes himself, here's this masterpiece:

Since he's a surgeon (and a comic nerd), he should be skilled at drawing human anatomy. How does he draw realistic arts? Does he doodle while taking notes?

We've seen his handwriting in punk hazard arc and it wasn't particularly stylized. Regardless, it'd be nice to take a proper peek at his notebook.

Law has lived such a violent life of seeing people that care for him dying and being used for others personal gain that having his most trusted man be a person that hates to hurt others, is a bleeding heart of care, that seems to really respect Law's choices and orders is perfect for Law. The others in his crew are like this, but not to the level of Bepo which we need to realise is why Law wants around him

Eddie Diaz is a federal prosecutor for the DA's office in LA, and he's damn good at it. He's calm, collected, and works best under pressure. That is, until he faces off against the new guy on the LA scene, defence attorney Evan Buckley. He's cocky, sneaky, and manages to get his way in the courtroom more often than not. The worst part? He knows it.

The thing about Evan Buckley, is that he didn’t look like he belonged in a courtroom. Eddie sat on his side of the room, leaning back in his chair as he flipped through the materials again. The doors opened loudly, and he came bustling through, adjusting his collar as he pushed through the gate and slipped into his seat. Eddie looked up out of the corner of his eye and over to where he was pulling his own files out of his satchel. He wore a tight grey suit with a navy button up beneath it, no tie, tight enough that Eddie wondered how the buttons weren’t holding on for dear life. He was tall and broad with blonde curls cut short and gelled back, a crimson birthmark over his eyebrow, clashing brilliantly with striking blue eyes and white teeth that pulled up in a smile which just took over his face and lit him up like he was made of radiant sunshine. Eddie thought he looked more like a golden retriever than a cold and calculating lawyer. Buckley turned towards him and gave him a smile, nodding once in recognition before Eddie was clearing his throat and turning away, not wanting to give the man the satisfaction of knowing his eyes had been tracing his features for longer than they probably should have. Eddie had three consecutive cases with Buckley as his opposing chair, so he could finally see what Lena was talking about. They stood and stared ahead as the judge walked in and took his seat at the bench before the proceedings began. Buckley didn’t much look like he belonged in the courtroom, at least not until he opened his mouth.
