The moment the clock hit 10pm April knew something was wrong.

It was Friday night, the rain pattering gently against the glass of her window. April watched the trickles of water slowly make their way down, collecting at the bottom. Jupiter Jim: Back to the Moon?! Again?! Sitting in her DVD player, the 18-year-old curled under a blanket as she stared down at her phone.

No texts.

No calls.

No word.

Absolutely nothing from her little brothers.

Sure, they were only supposed to be there thirty minutes ago. Yeah, it certainly wasn’t the first time they were late— the four of them once Busted through her window two hours late, sporting a few pizza boxes and a story about some pigeon holding pizza in its beak— apparently the second time that had happened to them, so it was a big deal.

But they knew better. They knew better, after what had happened to all of them six months ago. After the invasion, after she almost lost all of her little brothers in one fell swoop.

They had been planning this all week. For them to not arrive…

“Damn it.” April muttered, throwing her phone to the side and watching it bounce right off of her couch, her youngest brother’s voicemail still playing out. She stood up abruptly, not even bothering to change out of her pajamas as she grabbed a coat and her baseball bat. “You boys better be okay so I can kick your ass, I swear…”

Her door slammed shut behind her, and the moment it clicked shut she took off running. Booting up the tracker app she had on her phone, quickly locking onto Donnie’s tracker with fumbling fingers. All four of them were together, in some alley. About four blocks away.

‘If these idiots stopped over another goddamn pizza pigeon just to give me a heart attack I’m going to kill them.’

She barely remembered her race to get there. As she turned the corner, she had a maelstrom of thoughts going through her head— violent images of the Krang being back, finding them standing over her brothers’ lifeless bodies— or her turning the corner to find them all safe, alive, okay—

…

But…

Neither option was correct.

April felt the bat slide out of her hand, barely hearing it impact the wet asphalt as her ears began to ring. As she felt the ground be ripped out from under her.

A metallic smell filled the air. April could barely breathe as she beheld the massacre in front of her.

A dozen men in government uniforms, bloodied and ripped apart. Blood coated the walls, dripped and puddled in the rainwater. Streamed from their black coats like rivers. Her gaze wobbled as it rose past them, what was standing in the middle of them.

Donnie.

Her little brother was clutching his bo staff tight, breath heaving and shaking as he silently stared at the scene around him. The look on his face was terrifying.

“Donnie…? Did you—?” April couldn’t finish her choked out words.

Donnie didn’t even react. But the blood on the end of his bo spoke for itself. Going up his arms to his elbows, covering his plastron.

“Okay.” April’s voice wobbled as she slowly walked towards him. “Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do— fuck.” The air was punched from her as she finally beheld what was at the end of the alley. The clear reason why Donnie had done this.

Their brothers.

Her baby brothers.

Raph, Leo, and Mikey. All laying there, crumpled forms and limbs twisted in ways that they shouldn’t be. Crimson soaking them, the rain barely making a dent in the bloodstains.

“No!” April rushed forward, darting right past Donnie to their sides. She collapsed to her knees, reaching out to grab Raph’s shoulder with a violently trembling hand. “Please be okay. Please be okay, please be okay—” Her voice rose multiple octaves in her hysteria. 

Raph’s eyes opened, bringing her momentary relief. Her heart broke as he let out a tiny whine, reaching his hand out for her. She immediately took it, forcing a shaky smile onto her face as she mustered up as much determination as she could. “You’re gonna be fine, big guy.” She murmured, rubbing his arm. ‘Where is he hurt how bad is it how bad is it how bad is it—’ “Everything’s okay, your big sister is here now, okay? I’ve got you. I’ll keep you safe, okay?”

Raph’s only answer was another short, soft whimper.

And then his eyes went dull. His weak grip went slack, his head hitting the pavement with a sickening, soft thump.

April couldn’t breathe.

Her little brother, her baby brother, gone. Just like that. In an instant, torn away from her and the rest of their family. Their protector, the foundation of their family, the rock that kept them all afloat through the storms—

Gone.

April’s gaze slowly lifted to the brothers curled under his arm. The ones he shielded, even in death. She could immediately tell that Leo was gone already. She had no idea for how long, but necks should not bend like that. His eyes were blank, lifeless. Blood slowly seeping a trail from his mouth down his jaw, dripping.

And then Mikey. Her poor, sweet baby brother. She let out a choked sob as she saw him weakly holding onto his brothers, the agony in his eyes all she could see for a moment…until he went limp. Dead, just like the other two.

Dead.

Dead.

Dead.

Her brothers were gone.

April clenched her teeth as she let out an agonized scream, clenching her fists and banging them into the pavement— ignoring the sickening crack, the sharp pain that suddenly flooded her— it was nothing compared to the grief she felt. April shakily reached a hand out, closing Leo’s eyes and then Raph’s. 

“What are you doing?” 

Donnie’s hoarse, angry voice came from behind her. Immediately catching her attention.

April looked up over her shoulder slowly, staring up at him. She couldn’t say a word, her throat closed up.

“You just watched them die.” Donnie sounded breathless, his eyes filled with pure malice as he stared down at her. Bo trembling in his hand. “You didn’t— why didn’t you DO SOMETHING?!”

April swallowed back the flood of agony that wrought her at being blamed. “I— there was nothing I could’ve done, Dee.”

“You didn’t even TRY!” Donnie exploded, gripping his staff in both hands as an explosion of purple energy flew out of him, slamming into the walls around them— and right into April.

She cried out as she was flung back, slamming into Raph’s motionless shell. Her back hitting the side of his spikes winded her, sending the human crashing to her knees and gasping for breath.

When she finally looked up again, Donnie was staring down at her with wide eyes. His entire body was shaking, a newfound clarity and horror gleaming in his gaze. He opened his mouth, but the only sound that came out was a weak chirp. A call.

She recognized the sound. She knew it well, from years of growing up alongside those turtles. Her boys, her brothers.

He was calling for his brothers.

Donnie shook his head violently, the chirp escaping much more desperately, as if it was torn from his throat. April lunged to her feet as he crashed to his knees, the bo staff rolling away through the bloodied carnage Donnie had caused. 

April dropped down in front of him, hauling her little brother into a hug right as those desperate chirps turned to piercing wails. Unable to do anything more than hold the only brother she had left.

The highly anticipated Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will come into evening view for Northern Hemisphere observers starting October 11th.

For the first time in years, we're about to see an easily visible comet. Friday should bring the first evening glimpse of the comet, low in the west during twilight. The comet will appear higher in the sky and become easier to spot through the weekend. By early next week, it will be at its best for viewing.

For tens of thousands of years Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (pronounced choo-cheen-SHAHN), also known as C/2023 A3, has been falling in toward the Sun. Astronomers discovered it in early 2023 as a tiny, distant speck in large telescopes. Having just swung around the Sun on September 27th, it's now passing its closest by Earth, coming within 44 million miles of us on October 12th. For the next days, it will be showing off during its brief time of glory in the Sun's warmth and light.

How to See the Comet

"As soon as October 11th, ambitious comet spotters may pick up the comet during twilight just above the western horizon," says Sky & Telescope Contributing Editor Bob King. "Binoculars will help you see the comet throughout its appearance."

About 40 minutes after sunset on Friday, find a spot with a good view down to the western horizon. The first thing that will catch your eye will be the bright planet Venus, the Evening Star — that's your starting point. Hold your fist out at arm's length; the comet is about 2½ fists to Venus's right. The comet will still look tiny in Friday's twilight — like a hazy star with a small tail — and will set while twilight is still in progress.

But that's just the warm-up.

The next evening, on Saturday, October 12th, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will be a little higher and easier to find, and it will remain in view until a little later in twilight. Every evening thereafter, the comet will appear higher and more obvious. As twilight fades on Monday, October 14th, it will be two fists to the upper right of Venus (if seen from the northern U.S.) or to the right of Venus (if seen from the southern U.S.). As twilight turns to night, the comet will remain in view, its long, straight tail pointing up from the horizon.

The following few days should provide the best views as the comet gains height in our skies — despite light from the waxing gibbous Moon.

Around October 20th, a window of true darkness begins to open up between twilight and moonrise if you're far from the skyglow of city lights. But by then the comet, now high in the sky, will have started to fade and shrink. It will diminish into the distance in the following days, becoming invisible to the unaided eye later in the month even under ideal, dark-sky conditions.

Comet Origins & Fate

The comet came by its name from its discovery at both China's Purple Mountain Observatory (tsuchinshan means "purple mountain") and South Africa's Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). The two teams picked up the comet independently in early 2023, when it was still beyond Jupiter's orbit and some 50,000 times fainter than the faintest stars visible to the unaided eye.

The comet's solid nucleus, the source of the whole show, is a dirty space iceberg, probably just a few miles wide. It fell in toward the Sun from the cold and dark outer solar system, originating in a region referred to as the Oort Cloud. As the comet nears the Sun's warmth, some of the ices in its nucleus (water, frozen carbon dioxide, and other volatiles) evaporate. The ensuing haze of sunlit dust and fluorescing gas forms the comet's visible head and streaming tail, which can be many millions of miles long.

In September, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was visible to the unaided eye before dawn in the Southern Hemisphere, then before dawn in the northern parts of the world, brightening all the while. It swung around the Sun on September 27th and, fortunately for us, enters the Northern Hemisphere's evening sky while still glowing brightly. But as it recedes from both Earth and the Sun, it will dwindle relatively quickly — there's no hope of seeing it with the unaided eye on Halloween evening. It will probably remain visible through binoculars through early November. Its orbit is only weakly gravitationally bound to the Sun, so it will spend future ages coasting ever farther out of the solar system, probably never to return.

Best Jupidad Moments #1 Nevermoor - Ch 3 - The First Meeting

Figured I’d start to collate some of these in an attempt to analyse what it is that makes this the most beautiful father/daughter dynamic in fiction.

Herewith my ramblings (you have been warned…)

He stood with his feet wide apart and hands stuffed into trouser pockets, leaning casually against the doorframe as if he had spent half his life standing in that spot and couldn’t think of a place he felt more at home. As if he himself owned Crow Manor and the Crows were merely his dinner guests.

His eyes locked on to Morrigan’s. He grinned. ‘Hello, you.’

There’s something about how he says “you” here, rather than saying her name. It’s so familiar, so personal and it straightaway elevates her to the most important person in the room - he doesn’t NEED to say her name, it is obvious she is why he is there. It’s all about her now (whereas 5 mins ago even her ‘last meal’ was painfully NOT about her at all).

And he grins, probably nobody has ever looked at her and seemed happy before and I get the impression that people usually avoid looking at her at all (ref the fact she isn’t allowed to make eye contact). I feel this must be part of why she so quickly trusts him because he’s the first person ever to give her the impression her existence is a positive thing.

‘Mourn the death of your daughter?’ echoed Jupiter. He took two deliberate steps towards Corvus and paused, his eyes glittering. The hairs on Morrigan’s arms stood up. Jupiter’s voice dropped an entire octave, and he spoke with a cold, quiet anger that was terrible to behold. ‘Can you possibly mean the daughter standing right in front of you? The one who is demonstrably, superbly, brilliantly alive?’

Immediate shift to the other heart melting facet to our Jupidad - the protectiveness. We find out later he’s been watching her for a while and I really get a sense at this point that he is SO APPALLED with how callously she’s been treated her whole life.

Whereas Corvus appears unbothered by how his words impact his daughter, Jupiter is the opposite - despite the fact he isn’t speaking to her directly he picks his words for her benefit - “superbly” “brilliantly”. Bet she’s never heard them said about her before. He’s also underlining how superb and brilliant life itself is, hopefully giving her the courage to answer the next question…

Morrigan,’ said Jupiter, in a voice very different from the one he’d just used with her father. ‘Don’t you want to live?’ 

Morrigan flinched. What sort of a question was that? ‘It doesn’t matter what I want.’

‘It does,’ he insisted. ‘It matters so very, very much. Right now it’s the only thing that matters.’

He absolutely shifts tone when speaking to her - this isn’t a guy who loses the plot or can’t control his temper when he gets angry. He puts the very justifiable anger away and immediately replaces it with compassion.

He also doesn’t dismiss her feelings - he understands why she thinks the way she does but he doesn’t let her stay in that mindset. He doesn’t just tell her what to do, he doesn’t say “don’t be daft, we’ve got to run” but instead takes the time to help her realise she has the right to decide her own fate, because despite what she’s been told for 11 years what she thinks DOES matter.

And then he waits to hear the words from her, despite the Hunt closing in outside (who he knows will likely kill him too if he opposes them, he must be at least a little scared for himself as well as her).

I think that Jupiter is already chipping away at the abuse and lies that have defined Morrigan’s life and he’s only been in the room 10 mins.

The windows began to rattle. There was a faint smell of burning. ‘What’s that?’ She squeezed his hand automatically. ‘What’s happening?’ Jupiter leaned down to whisper in her ear. ‘Do you trust me?’ She answered without thinking. ‘Yes.’ ‘You sure?’ ‘Positive.’ ‘All right.’ He looked her in the eye.

And so she trusts him implicitly. She squeezes his hand like a little girl might her Daddy’s when she needs reassurance. If he hadn’t already demonstrated that he has her best interests firmly at heart it would have been weird that she does this so soon, but it isn’t because he has.

Again, he looks her in the eye.

Removed Render Distance setting, as it would break immersion for little to no performance impact.

Added Render Scale slider, which should actually help with performance!

Separate settings for texture quality and lighting quality in Graphics Settings.

Added Earth Terrain Detail Distance setting in Graphics Settings. Good for detailed landscapes, but the higher the detail distance, the more bandwidth and RAM it will consume.

New settings panel to choose between touch controls and keyboard and mouse controls.

New Features:

Character models on the top of the Cardiff building can now be pushed into the inside of the TARDIS! Yes, materializing around them gets them inside too!

The lighting status of interior windows is now synchronized with exterior windows.

What's next?

As of today, I'll start work on version 0.10: The Space Update, a groundbreaking update that will convert this game in no longer just a solar system simulator, but a universe simulator, thanks to the power of the Space Graphics Toolkit asset that I bought which will allow full scale planet terrains, more realistic stars, nebulae, black holes, galaxies, etc.

Let me also mention that developing each small patch can take long days of programming, and although I am juggling this work with other ways to make a living, my income is still well below minimum wage.
