But was that really growth? When all of Aoi’s opponents are lecturing her on how hopeless she is, when she makes her brother’s life constantly worse by endangering herself, is her being stubborn really growth? Or is the growth when she acknowledges her weakness, admits she did nothing, and is the only duelist not to log into Link Vrains for the rest of the show? You don’t have to like it, but it’s wrong to say the signs weren’t there, because they were being broadcasted in her every duel.

My position is I think there was a general conflict between the writing and RL circumstances.

They sure seem to keep setting her up to climb out of that hopelessness as an intended growth arc, but circumstances kept killing her growth arc from going anywhere.

But Yoshida was regularly away for most of the first half of Season 2 due to prior engagements with a Beer & Pretzel Bar Isekai anime, and Ms. Nakashima basically had her first talent agency collapse around the time I think of rouuuuughly when Specter fought Aoi so they had to write her out.

And then Ms. Nakashima got picked up by Bushiroad to voice and sing as the character Imai Lisa in the band Roselia of the BanG Dream!! franchise, so their ability to have her on tap was likely severely limited.

You're referring to the end result, that she was never intended to have a character arc.

I'm arguing the intent was Aoi was supposed to have a character arc that resulted in her growth as a person, but real life circumstances with:

A) Mr. Yoshida being unable to fully focus on the show due to prior commitments with Isekai Izakaya (that led to the infamous Despair from the Dark subplot with Soulburner & Flame)

B) The severe turnaround schedule with VRAINS where it basically had to shit out the first plausible idea possible rather than the best ideas feasible.

C) The complexity addiction of game design in Yu-Gi-Oh! itself leading to Duels in VRAINS having to always be two parters.

D) Ms. Nakashima's availability was hampered by the collapse of her first talent agency, and then constrained later by her being hired to work as a member of Roselia under Bushiroad, severely curtailed her accessibility, as she used Imai Lisa role to catapult herself into a wider career.

This is basically the same problems Izayoi Aki had in 5D's.

Aki was intended as the third pillar of the Signers.

But public backlash to the darker story (and Yu-Gi-Oh!'s reputation as a franchise that encourages violent delinquency) meant the Arcadia movement got shelved.

Yoshida was out to lunch for a good chunk of 5D's having to deal with planning for the Bonds Beyond Time movie (if we want to talk about a show impacted by a movie, Bonds Beyond Time clearly was a resource drain that Dark Side of Dimensions wasn't)

But most importantly, Ms. Kinoshita Ayumi was basically throwing herself at basically any live action drama that would have her to try and bolster her career and not get stuck in the anime ghetto, and was generally not as available as she was for the first 60 episodes, so Aki does not do much in the WRGP arc.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is used by actresses as a launch pad that typically guarantees 3 years of work and voice training and refinement to then launch themselves into a wider and bigger career.

You're concerned with the end result. They have her say that at the end because that ended up being the story that was written over 2.5 years, and they decided on a motif that heroism is not actually a healthy goal.

I'm inferring the intent was the producers hired Ms. Nakashima to play the third major character who was intended to be a staunch ally and friend of Playmaker, but that's not the story that ended up getting written, because anime is not planned out over three years.

And I think what happened is they set up Blue Maiden as a growth arc for her, but then real life circumstances (likely unexpected popularity) undercut Aoi's arc, leading to Ms. Nakashima being asked to be written out of the show a second time.

P.S. I wish they revealed more. Like Ichimura’s face. Also, it was never explained how Wadagaki teamed up with Tanaka in episode 5. That’s my only frustration, to be honest. ^^;
